Abu Dhabi has something for everyone, making it an incredible destination to visit. The Dusit Lounge on the 35th floor of Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi offers amazing views of the city, as does the Observation Deck at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, which presents 360-degree perspectives. In fact, the Observation Deck is the highest viewing point in Abu Dhabi with amazing views of the city as well as the Arabian Gulf and Corniche. Take the time to explore Heritage Village by the Corniche Breakwater to gain a glimpse of the UAE lifestyle before the discovery of oil. Another place to visit is the Al Hosn Fort. It is one of the oldest forts in Abu Dhabi and where the first passport was issued to a local citizen. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is another outstanding monument where visitors can discover more about Islam and the mosque with a complimentary tour. Al Ain is also a popular stop as the city boasts historic forts such as the Al Jahili Fort and the Al Ain Palace Museum, where the late UAE president HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was born. For action and adventure, I recommend visiting Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. The indoor theme park has the fastest roller coaster in the world – Formula Rossa – that reaches speeds of 240 kilometres per hour. To keep cool over summer, Yas Waterworld has plenty of rides and slides to keep everyone entertained. Stratos at Le Royal Meridien Abu Dhabi is a wonderful dinner destination. Located on the 31st floor of the hotel, it is the only revolving restaurant in the city. For the finest wine selection, head to La Cava at Rosewood Abu Dhabi that features over 1,000 labels. This month marks the start of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month. The exact start date will be determined by the position of the moon but is expected to be around June 18. During this period, Muslims fast during the hours of daylight, abstaining from all food and drink until the sun sets. At this point, the call to prayer sounds and iftar – the traditional fast-breaking feast – begins. Visitors can experience this meal at restaurants around the city where large buffets will be laid on every evening. For more information on iftars at hotels, refer to the guide section on page 66.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It always begins two weeks earlier than the previous year and the exact start date is determined by the sighting of the new moon, which is called the hilal. The holy month off icially begins once this slight crescent has appeared in the sky. The following morning, at the first light of dawn, fasting will commence. This year Ramadan is due to fall between June 18 and July 17. There is a special Moon Sighting Committee tasked with the responsibility of spotting the hilal and announcing the start of the holy month in the UAE. One of the most important rituals of Ramadan involves fasting during daylight hours. Between sunrise and sunset, Muslims must abstain from all food and drink as well as avoid smoking. Nasif Kayed, general manager of the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) in Dubai, explains that fasting offers several benefits: “The idea of fasting during Ramadan is to help teach

discipline, perseverance and patience. It also makes you watch yourself very closely. The whole community does it together. “The first three days are very difficult for almost everyone. But as the month goes on, it gets better and better, and by the time you’re used to it, it ends. You feel so purified that you could continue to live that way past the end of the month.” Once the sun has set and the main prayer is completed, the daily fast is traditionally broken by eating dates, a rich source of fibre that also quickly restores blood sugar in the body. It’s believed that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) broke his own fast in this manner. The iftar meal then begins.
Family members and friends join in this long and leisurely feast that often features a host of traditional dishes such as harees, which consists of coarsely ground wheat mixed with meat, and local refreshments including jallab, a delicious rose water drink. “Iftars are a special time for everyone. It’s not often that you enjoy a regular meal surrounded by your closest family and friends, but during Ramadan you make sure to spend every evening together,” adds Kayed. Iftar events are held across the city for both visitors and residents. Within five-star hotels, elegant Ramadan lanterns adorn passageways and grand iftar spaces have been created especially for the season. From majestic tents to private majlis-style spaces, each venue brings something different to the table, hosting luxurious iftar buffets that present authentic Middle Eastern cuisine like mezze, pickles, olives, roasted meats, tagines and juices. Later in the evening, a second round of food is served in a meal called sohour. This is also the name for the last meal before

sunrise, and some eat it as an early breakfast before the first prayer. Between feasts, friends enjoy time with one another, playing board games and engaging in the cultural pastime of smoking shisha. Praying is not exclusive to Ramadan as Muslims pray five times a day. However the prayers just before sunrise and just after sunset take on extra significance during the holy month as fasting begins or ends. Many will read the Qur’an more frequently and intently during this time, memorising parts of the text and reciting the Muslim profession of faith, or shahada, more often. Another major aspect of the holy month is zakat, one of the five pillars of Islam that require Muslims to give back to the community and be more charitable towards the poor and needy. Feeling hunger from fasting also promotes empathy with those less fortunate. “In Ramadan, charity counts in every way. You can feed, clothe, or give money,” says Kayed.

All shopping malls feature charity stands during the holy month where donations can be made. Visitors are also invited to join in the spirit of generosity, not just by donating to worthy causes but also by being more aware of those in need. A useful phrase to use is ‘Ramadan kareem’ which means ‘happy Ramadan’ to those who are celebrating the holy month. It’s also important that visitors refrain from eating, drinking, smoking or even chewing gum in public, including in cars, during the day. A more conservative dress sense – outfits that cover the knees and shoulders – is also encouraged in order to show respect. The holy month of Ramadan comes to a close with a joyous three-day celebration called Eid Al Fitr, also known as ‘festival of breaking the fast’. Kayed says: “After
breakfast and prayers, everyone dresses in new clothes and visits each other – starting with the eldest in the family and then visiting other extended family members. All three days are about spending time with one another and having fun together.” Visitors in Abu Dhabi can enjoy a host of celebratory activities held across the emirate during Eid Al Fitr, where special feasts are prepared and family-friendly events focus on UAE traditions and customs. The annual Abu Dhabi Summer Season, which begins on June 11, also features special concerts by famous Arabic musicians Mohamed Abdo and Habib Elyasi as part of the Eid festivities. The holy month of Ramadan presents the perfect opportunity to take a moment to reflect on what’s imporant – it is a season of joy, wonder and acceptance.

Around the world, and here in the UAE, Ramadan is a special time of year. For followers of Islam, it is a peaceful time for reflection and meditation as the community comes together in prayer. As the pace of daily life slows, and fasting begins during daylight hours, it's an opportunity for the faithful to look inwards. Time is taken to read the Qur'an and recite its verses, while preparation for prayer involves cleansing the hands, face and feet in ablution chambers

During Ramadan, followers of the faith spend time studying the Qur'an and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). When it's time to break the fast each day, dates are eaten first as a source of sustenance, but also in tribute to the Prophet who broke his own fast with the fruit

When the call to prayer sounds during the holy month, the faithful visit the mosque where prayers are recited five times a day. Of all the UAE's mosques, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is the jewel in the crown. The stunning structure makes a distinctive mark on the capital's skyline and boasts some of the most striking interiors of any mosque in the world. In Dubai, Jumeirah Mosque is an impressive example of the Fatimid style of Islamic architecture and is attended by hundreds each day to pray in its peaceful surroundings

First and foremost places of worship, the UAE's mosques are serene spaces where followers gather to meditate on their faith. For visitors to the Emirates during Ramadan, there is the opportunity to visit mosques for a deeper insight into Islam. At Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, regular tours offer the chance to step inside and gain a better understanding of local customs, traditions and the Emirati way of life

A legendary tale The House of Fabergé is returning to its roots, reviving the historic tradition of crafting magnificent objets d’art
There are some brands that are so iconic that mere whispers of reinvention are immediately met with disbelief. The luxury jewellery House of Fabergé is one of them, and yet, that’s exactly what President Robert Benvenuto has set into motion this year by unveiling exclusive objets d’art. The story of Fabergé began in 1842 in St Petersburg in Russia when Peter Carl Fabergé, born in 1846, was apprenticed as a boy to his goldsmith father Gustav Fabergé. The revered name survived the fall of the Russian dynasty and was revived in 2009 with the launch of stunning high-jewellery lines. Now, Benvenuto wants the world to know Fabergé is writing a brand new chapter in its remarkable history. After a hiatus of nearly 100 years, the House is honouring its heritage by once again crafting the precious Imperial Class eggs that made Fabergé legendary.

After his apprenticeship, Peter Carl continued his goldsmith studies in Paris, Germany and England before returning to Russia to join the family business. Extraordinary detail and a vibrant colour palette became hallmarks of Peter Carl’s craft and he soon caught the attention of the Russian Imperial Court. The House of Fabergé became known, under Peter Carl’s direction, as an artist-jeweller of some note and by 1885, Tsar Alexander III gave Fabergé the title ‘Goldsmith by Special Appointment to the Imperial Crown’. Peter Carl flourished in the role, creating exquisite jewels and ‘objets’, including the legendary series of lavish Imperial Easter Eggs.

The opulence surrounding the Russian royalty came crashing down in 1917 when the Russian Revolution brought about the end of the Romanov dynasty and with it, the House of Fabergé. Peter Carl Fabergé and his family fled Russia on the last diplomatic train bound for Riga, Latvia, where he lived out his days in Switzerland. In a legal settlement in 1951, the Fabergé family lost the right to produce and market designs under the Fabergé name and it wasn’t until 2007 that the family was reconnected with the iconic title. Tatiana Fabergé and Sarah Fabergé, both great-granddaughters of Peter Carl, became founding members of
the Fabergé Heritage Council, which offers advice to the new company. Fabergé was then finally relaunched in September 2009. “The company was dormant for almost 100 years, yet the name is revered around the world. From a business perspective, the company is almost like a start-up. We have the opportunity to put our fingerprint on the next chapter, understanding the past and not forgetting it, but rather reinterpreting it,” says Fabergé president and chief operating officer Robert Benvenuto. “Fabergé is the artist’s jeweller who paints with precious colour gem stones. Our palette has rubies, sapphires and emeralds from which we’re looking to create these personal pieces of art. The aim is to position Fabergé at the top of the luxury good pyramid in terms of aspiration,” explains Benvenuto. While Peter Carl made over 200,000 items, from pieces of jewellery to intricate stone carvings, it’s the 50 Imperial Eggs he crafted that continue to fuel the legend of Fabergé. In a landmark launch at Baselworld 2015, the first egg created in the Imperial Class after nearly a century was proudly unveiled, cementing Fabergé’s return to tradition. For the design, Fabergé collaborated with the Qatari-based Al Fardan family, renowned pearl collectors, for the new Fabergé Pearl Egg that draws inspiration from the formation of a pearl within an oyster. The egg’s mother-of-pearl exterior

opens to reveal a unique grey pearl of 12.17 carats, sourced from the Arabian Gulf. In total, it boasts 139 fine pearls from the private collection of Hussain Ibrahim Al Fardan as well as 3,305 diamonds, carved rock crystal and mother of pearl set on white and yellow gold. Benvenuto explains: “The last time an Imperial Egg or a general objet was manufactured was in 1916 and was delivered the following year to the Czar in Russia.
7
There’s been a hiatus for 99 years and we’re coming back with it now. These objets are highly, highly limited. “We have the credibility and the history. We want to lead with a product that we can own and can’t be duplicated. Objets are also what we’re getting requests for on a private, bespoke level. Fabergé reflects the art of colour and the art of gifting. Now that art of gifting has turned into the art of collecting and these objets are the crème de la crème.” During Baselworld, the House of Fabergé also showcased high-jewellery collections featuring exceptional coloured gemstones, Secret Garden and Summer in Provence, as well as elegant updates to its Heritage, Treillage, Charms and Rococo lines. “If we look at the precious colour gems marketplace, it’s very fragmented and there is no leader. We feel like this is a market that we want to own. One of the key points for us is that our parent company, Gemfields, is the largest publically traded precious colour gem mining company in the world. They own sapphire, ruby and emerald mines and there’s the opportunity to reach them right from the source,” says Benvenuto.

Peter Carl Fabergé also created timepieces and, drawing on his legacy, the House has revealed four watch collections – Lady Fabergé, Lady Compliquée, Summer in Provence and Visionnaire I. Mirroring the same craftsmanship Peter Carl was famed for, there’s a focus on visual richness with enchanting colours and an interplay of various patterns. In the Lady Compliquée Peacock, for example, a peacock made from sculpted and engraved gold fans out its tail on the hour over a subdial of turquoise tourmalines, green tsavorites and sparkling diamonds. It’s an exciting time for the House of Fabergé, says Benvenuto: “I do not know any other hard goods luxury company in the world – and I’ve been in this industry for 30 years – that has the same degree of unexploited global growth potential as Fabergé. It’s an evolution, not a revolution and the book hasn’t even begun to be written on this next chapter.”

Fine fragrances Niche perfume houses are exploring new horizons to create masterpieces WORDS BY
ZEINA EID
The art of perfume-making is deeply rooted in the history of the Middle East. In the past, the use of perfumes was a privilege reserved for royalty, while perfumemaking was an honourable profession practised by the social elite. At the time, Egypt was a main centre for the industry, exporting fine elixirs to the rest of the old world. Egyptian perfumers masterfully crafted fragrant ointments and salves by mixing f lowers, herbs and woods with clarified butter or by soaking them in oil. In modern history, the rise of Islam in the Arab region marked a turning point in the industry as Arab scientists invented the technique of distillation. The rich legacy of making perfumes continues today with niche luxury perfume brands both in Arabia and beyond crafting premium fragrances.

Modern legacy Perfumes still form an integral part of local society today. Aromas of incense and sandalwood f loat in mosques and traditional markets, while an endless selection of perfume stores can be found in modern malls. Amidst the plethora of commercial perfume releases, artisan brands such as Ajmal Perfumes and M. Micallef are carving a niche of their own. Renowned for being one of the oldest and most prestigious perfume houses in the UAE, Ajmal boasts a legacy that spans more than five decades. Having inherited the family business, Abdullah Ajmal, general manager and grandson of its founder Haji Ali Ajmal, is determined to preserve its heritage. “The story of Ajmal started in a small village in the state of Assam, a northeastern region of India, considered the best source of oud in the world. Back then, my grandfather would explore the local jungles in search of the precious material, which was collected and sold to Arab merchants in Mumbai. With a
constantly growing demand in the ’60s, my grandfather visited the UAE where he soon became the official perfume purveyor for the late HH Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan and HH Sheikh Rashid Al Maktoum,” explains Abdullah Ajmal. Ever since, Ajmal became a reference for luxury perfumes. When visitors step inside one of Ajmal’s perfume factories, which were built in Dubai’s Al Quoz district in the early ’90s, they are welcomed by the scent of the precious oud wood that is stacked high in piles. Here, workers examine every piece, selecting the best of it, while impurities are carefully shaved off with a sharp tool.

“Perfume-making runs in my blood. I have loved it since I was a child. In the family house, my grandfather would store piles of oud wood and rare spices. Perfumemaking is a true art. It takes years to master and new lessons are learnt every day. My uncle was my teacher and my mentor. Before passing away, he imparted some of his knowledge to me,” says Abdullah.
Local inspirations Ajmal creates rich perfumes that are tied to UAE customs and traditions. A true stand-out scent is Baqaa, which means ‘bouquet’ in Arabic, where jasmine and mandarin blossoms seamlessly blend with musk and saffron, for a rich, fresh scent. In the same floral category, Ahbab is a romantic ode, a poetic mixture of rose, ylang, lily and jasmine, while Ragheeb is a symphony of rose, geranium and strong spices such as nutmeg and saffron. of the selection of ingredients at Ajmal, Abdullah Ajmal explains: “We are always looking for the most precious components like Taef rose from Saudi or a rare French jasmine of which only eight kilogrammes are produced every year. “Oud is regarded as one of the most precious natural ingredients to be used in perfumes. The resinous substance secreted by Agarwood trees in Asia is produced in very limited quantities. Distillation of oud gives a very low yield, with 1.5 millilitres of essential oils produced for every kilogramme, a yield of 0.001 percent. That’s why the price of one kilogramme of oud can reach AED200,000 and its value increases with age.” Ajmal’s collection is also an impressive display of beautiful, intricately decorated bottles. For example, the limited edition Oud Moattaq 2013 includes 2013 crystal bottles, complete with a 24-carat gold cap. Ajmal’s crown jewel, Dahn Oud Al Ittihad, was a celebration of the UAE’s national day, with 10 beautifully handcrafted pieces shaped to resemble a falcon and embellished with colours of the country’s flag. The hood of a single bottle, worth AED750,000, was also bejewelled with 73 carats of real gemstones, featuring diamonds, rubies and emeralds. For even more exclusivity, niche perfume brands such as Ajmal offer VIP clients private services, allowing them to create their own perfume and bottle.
5
6
“We study our clients’ personality and lifestyle and we can then involve them in each step of the creation of the perfumes with our My Inspiration. It becomes an expression of their identity,” admits Abdullah Ajmal.
European scents Ten years after it was set up in the French town of Grasse – considered the world’s capital of perfume – M. Micallef succeeded in emerging as an exclusive brand for luxury perfumes. Its creators Martine Micallef and Geoffrey Nejman also share Abdullah Ajmal’s passion for their profession.

“I have always been fascinated by art and beauty. Since the day we founded M. Micallef, it has been a representation of our union, our love and passion to create scents that are precious and timeless. We want to leave a legacy where scents are not simply accessories, but expressions of our minds and hearts,” says Martine Micallef. A firm believer in taking an artisan’s approach to luxury fragrances, M. Micallef’s co-founder Geoffrey Nejman explains: “On average, we need 60 to 80 ingredients in a good formula but there are some that use as many as 200. As we are not compelled to mass produce our perfumes, we are able to establish the real personality of each scent without having to compromise its quality and exclusivity.” “Perfume creation starts with a mood and a f lash of inspiration, therefore our perfumes are created when an idea strikes and we don’t tend to follow a specific, rigid plan. We are inspired by so many different things; art, culture and even food can spark an idea or inspire us to try blending notes in a different way,” says Martine Micallef.

This inspired approach is embodied by M. Micallef’s exclusive collection, a rich selection of fragrances. For example, Ylang in Gold creates a fresh cocoon of Ylang flowers, coconut and vanilla, that transports its wearers to a tropical island. The best seller, Mon Parfum, is a vivid expression of Martine’s personality, where the strong aroma of orange blossoms and passion fruit is softened by the smell of vanilla and caramel. Long used by traditional attars, oud’s charm has recently captured the imagination of the most prestigious perfume houses in the world. Internationally, M. Micallef was one of the first to introduce the rich aromatic wood in its creations. “The spice souks of Dubai are where we discovered the oil of the agarwood tree. Our fragrances such as Royal Rose Aoud and Emir, which mix oud with more European notes, are now popular in the Middle East,” says Martine Micallef. In addition to a careful selection of the finest ingredients, exquisite bottle design is another crucial factor in luxury perfume making. “Art is in my soul and is my true passion. As the artist of M. Micallef, sometimes my designs are inspired by the fragrance and
12
sometimes it is the fragrance that inspires the design. Each bottle is handmade and then decorated with delicate paintings and Swarovski crystals, making each a unique collector’s item,” says Martine Micallef. Crafting exclusive masterpieces is also a source of pride for M. Micallef, as co-founder Geoffrey Nejman says: “Our clients see our products as more than just perfume – they are treasured memories encased in a bottle.”

Healing havens Feel the power of ancient Chinese medicine with a hot stone spa treatment Words by
Rachel Ingram
From hol ist ic ice bat hs to herba l seaweed wraps and gold facials, many unusual treatments are available at Abu Dhabi’s five-star spas. One that is particularly popular is the hot stone massage. Designed around traditional Chinese methods, the ritual involves the use of expert pressure-point massage techniques as well as placement of smooth, heated stones on skin to heal and rejuvenate the body as well as relieve aching muscles. Hot stone massages also help to promote relaxation and the restoration of ‘balance’. CHI, The Spa CHI,The Spa’s popular hot stones treatment is inspired by traditional rituals developed by locals of Lake Kokonar in Tibet. The spa’s 115-minute treatment uses a combination of cold and hot stones heated in a choice of oils and herbs from I plus Q, a leading Thai-based aromatherapy brand. It begins with a full body oil massage, during which smooth stones are rubbed against muscles. This is followed by the placement of basalt stones, bought from the Philippines, on chakra (energy) points. Afrah Hamdy, spa director, explains that the treatment also incorporates ancient Asian philosophies. “As well as placing stones on the chakra points, we follow the energy lines that promote healing according to traditional Chinese medicine,” she says. The technique is said to balance the mind, relieve stress and muscle pain, increase blood circulation and detoxify the body. It also restores the natural flow of chi – a person’s internal flow of energy. Where: Shangri-La Hotel Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi Contact: 02 5098900 / Visit: shangri-la.com

The unique texture of the natural stones – formed when molten lava from the earth’s core solidifies at the surface – means that they hold heat for a long time, yet feel soft and smooth on the skin. Basalt is commonly used by the world’s top spas, including ESPA at Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi. The spa’s Tension Soother treatment begins with skin brushing, exfoliation and a facial cleanse, followed by a relaxing
massage, during which oils are tailored to the client’s requirements, while stones are used to target the body’s energy and help release muscle tension. As the unique volcanic stones are working their magic, the therapist performs a head massage to activate further pressure points. Kathryn Cousins, ESPA operations associate, says: “The Hot Stone treatment at Yas Viceroy was developed to ensure the stones are used to facilitate deep relaxation and ease deep-seated tension thanks to the skillful hands of the therapist. The fullbody treatment helps to achieve complete tranquility for mind, body and soul. Namm Spa Dusit Thani’s Namm Spa offers two stonebased treatments – 90-minute Hot Stone Harmony and 120-minute Thermal Stones Ritual – using hot and cold basalt stones from the Caldera brand. Spa manager,Thanyathorn Khosinthanaphat, says: “The hot stones allow therapists to penetrate deep into your tissues so your blood vessels open, resulting in improved circulation, which delivers more oxygen to the muscles and can help ease aches and pains. We also use cold stones for the face as the cold alleviates swelling and reduces congestion.”
The ritual, which is the perfect treatment for those with aches and strains, involves a series of movements and stone placements. Khosinthanaphat explains: “We place the stones along the back bone. The heat from each stone goes deep into the muscle to release pain. Then we begin a leg massage using effleurage movements. We then turn the guest over and place the stones on the stomach and cover with a towel, before massaging the rest of the body.” Where: Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi Contact: 02 6988888 / Visit: dusit.com
Talise Spa Placing hot stones on the body is known to promote harmony, balance and peace, but there are many physical benefits also. Talise Spa manager, Miroslava Meszarosova, explains: “The most important features are the deep relaxation and pain relief from tense muscles. This deeply penetrating massage allows the therapist to recognise trigger points and, with help of the hot stones, warm them up, which makes the muscles easier to manipulate.” She says the technique can also re-energise the body through placement of the stones on chakras (energy points). Talise Spa offers an excellent hot stone treatment. Here, heated stones are placed on specific chakras on the body while, at the same time, smoother stones and natural oils from the Thai Puri Alchemy brand are used to perform a full-body massage that leaves guests revitalised. Traditional feasts Enjoy the authentic flavours of Ramadan at five-star tents across the capital
While the holy month of Ramadan is a time to reflect, it’s also when the city is at its most vibrant. All through the evening and until the early hours of the morning, Abu Dhabi is bustling with life and a wonderful spirit of joy, compassion and community fills the air. For the capital’s chefs, Ramadan is one of the busiest times of year. Every day restaurants prepare elaborate meals for iftar and sohour. Taking place around dusk, iftar is the meal for Muslims to break their fast, while sohour is the last meal before Muslims restart their fast. At Abu Dhabi’s many fivestar restaurants, both iftar and sohour feasts are complete with all the local favourites, from Arabic mezze and salads, platters of delicious grilled meats, seafood, vegetables, and plenty of Arabic desserts. Ramadan is one of the most enlightening times to visit the UAE capital, when cuisine and culture come together in a vivid tapestry of local life and offer a taste of Emirati values, customs and, of course, food. While there are many restaurants hosting traditional feasts, a wonderful way to experience the best of the season is by visiting grand Ramadan tents that have been specially set up across the city. Concierge recommends some of the best in Abu Dhabi.

They remain great reminders of the past and of the deep-rooted traditions that reaffirm the country's long-lasting connection to the sea.

EMIRATES PALACE The iconic palace takes pride of place at the tip of the Abu Dhabi Corniche and embodies the luxury lifestyle the capital has cultivated. Until recently, the most expensive hotel ever to be built, the impressive structure is richly adorned with precious materials. Twelve different shades of marble can be spotted in the cavernous atrium, while the central dome holds dual records as both the largest in the world and the greatest gilded expanse ever created in one building.

The third-largest mosque in the world, this majestic structure is comprised of over 1,000 columns and 82 domes embellished with semi-precious stones, gold and marble. My life in Abu Dhabi Rashed Al Qubaisi, general manager of Al Forsan International Sports Resort, shares his city highlights
}

1 Liwa desert 2 Yas Mall, Yas Island
When I want to immerse myself in culture and take some time out, I head to Liwa in Abu Dhabi. Friends and family gather to enjoy the desert away from the buzzing city centre, where we race ATV dune buggies and motocross bikes across the sand dunes and have a good time. At weekends, fishing is my favourite activity and visitors keen to get some angling action in during their time in Abu Dhabi should head to Al Dhabiya. I practice different types of fishing including spear fishing and trolling using live bait. I find that the sea gives me a feeling of peace. Fortunately, the weather is still suitable for fishing as well as other different activities. I enjoy all kinds of sports, including go karting and shooting rifles. More recently, though, I’ve found myself getting a lot more interested in clay shooting. At weekends, I prefer to have lunch at home as it’s not often I get to do that during the week because of my work schedule. If I do head out on Fridays, I prefer Al Fanar Restaurant & Café at the Venetian Village at The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi Grand Canal. Abu Dhabi has a number of fine restaurants and a few of
my favourite dishes include the fantastic burrata starter at Cipriani Yas Island and the caesar salad at BOA Steakhouse at the Eastern Mangroves Promenade in Abu Dhabi. Another restaurant I really like is Koi Abu Dhabi at The Collection in The St. Regis Saadiyat Island – the baked scallops on California rolls are a must-try. For shopping, I recommend Yas Mall at Yas Island. Not only does it have a very convenient location but also has everything visitors would want. For those who are looking to be more active, the Train Yas nights at the Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island are popular community events that see runners, walkers and cyclists use the F1 track to get fit and have fun. Al Forsan International Sports Resort is also a great destination try out a variety of sports for all ages from go karting and shooting to paintball, equestrian activities, basketball, volleyball, water sports and so much more. There really is so much to see and explore in Abu Dhabi. One of my best memories so far is successfully launching the first Yas drag-racing festival that went on to sell out and win awards and I look forward to achieving more.
Friends and family gather to enjoy the desert away from the buzzing city centre

Tradition, with a twist
‘The Souk at Qaryat Al Beri’ is a unique venue and the first of its kind in Abu Dhabi. Built on two levels, The Souk is an interesting fusion of Arabian architecture with a Venetian theme, which together reflects traditional Arab hospitality. Water canals meander through The Souk and nearby properties with abra boats ferrying hotel guests from the Shangri-La Hotel to various locations. Several restaurants and coffee shops have alfresco dining terraces that overlook the waters and afford a view of the picturesque landscape.
