Of the many distinctive features that set Dubai apart as a destination, its coastal location is undoubtedly one of the most alluring. Aside from presenting a beautiful landscape for visitors to enjoy, Dubai’s links to the sea are also a connection to the past. From its origins as a fishing and pearl diving port, the emirate has grown into a prosperous location flocked to by millions each year. Capitalising on marine ties, scuba diving is a popular activity during a visit to Dubai. For a novel take on the experience, the city’s impressive aquariums offer the opportunity to join a teeming array of creatures in a once-in-a-lifetime underwater encounter. For an insight into this fascinating activity, turn to page 62. Dubai’s shopping credentials are know the world over and from traditional souks to the world’s largest mall, visitors can revel in an incredible choice of spaces to shop. Within this, the city’s burgeoning boutique scene offers a wonderful alternative and a veritable treasure trove of unique finds. Explore Dubai’s best boutiques on page 28. Of increasing importance is the drive to preserve arts and crafts that were once nurtured in this region. Among these, Islamic pottery offers a stunning legacy of beautifully designed pieces, many of which are nowadays honed from clays native to the UAE. Learn all about this important tradition, and the efforts to keep it alive, on page 42. Afternoon tea takes on a very different meaning when hosted at one of the city’s spectacular five-star hotels. Perfect for a special celebration or simply a welldeserved treat. Concierge presents the city’s best afternoon tea offerings on page 72. CONCIERGE: A JOURNEY From the launch issue in September 2004, Concierge has told the story of Dubai in crafted words and striking imagery. Over the past decade, the city and emirate have gone through an incredible transformation and Concierge has reflected that change, undergoing its own metamorphosis. As Dubai has grown, so too has Concierge, into a portfolio that boasts an Abu Dhabi edition and magazines in Chinese, Arabic and Russian. As Concierge’s 10 th anniversary approaches, celebratory events and exciting content commemorate a very special journey.

The dress codes of the different Gulf states vary subtly. In the UAE, men opt for a crisp white kandoura teamed with a white ghutra or head dress while the preference in some neighbouring countries, including Saudi Arabia and Oman, is towards checked or coloured fabric. The ghutra is worn over a tight crochet skullcap known as a gahfiyya and held in place by the coiled agal. For women, the customary dress is the abaya. Previously this was a loose garment made of plain black fabric but these days it’s common to see Emirati women, particularly the younger generation, sporting fitted abayas with lavishly bejewelled or vividly embroidered sleeves.

When planning a Dubai itinerary, one of the activities I think guests should put at the top of their list is a visit to Burj Khalifa. Its viewing platform, At the Top, and gourmet restaurant At.mosphere both offer incredible views of the city from within the world's tallest tower. When dining at At.mosphere, be sure to reserve a window table as there’s no better view of Dubai. An alternative, also in Downtown Dubai, is Mango Tree which is a Thai restaurant at Souk Al Bahar with great views of The Dubai Fountain and Burj Khalifa. For those who love to shop, The Dubai Mall is the world's biggest and has more than 1,200 stores and plenty of luxury brands making it a shopper’s dream. In the evenings, a wonderful spot to unwind is No. 5 Lounge & Bar at The Ritz-Carlton, DIFC. The terrace is a great spot for a drink and our talented DJ plays until late. Dubai’s historical sights provide a great contrast to the skyscrapers and the new aspects of the city. I would recommend the Heritage Tour, which is an educational and cultural walk through Al Fahidi Historical District, one of the city’s oldest traditional areas. The tour is a great way to get acquainted with the old part of the city where narrow winding lanes are filled with culturally significant sights. Also here, Dubai Museum is a fascinating attraction housed in the city’s oldest building Al Fahidi Fort. A walk along Dubai Creek allows visitors to take a step back in time on a journey in a traditional boat known as an abra to cross this historic stretch of water. For photographic opportunities, Dubai Marina is ideal. Also be sure to take plenty of photos in the desert if there for a safari. The deep orange color of the sand makes the perfect backdrop for a photograph.

Montblanc

An air of understated and effortless style characterises the new Montblanc Meisterstück Soft Grain line. Available in black or beige, the collection is made up of briefcases, messenger and tote bags, wallets, business card and passport holders as well as a selection of iPhone cases. Each of the products is elegantly lined with a traditional Jacquard pattern based on Montblanc’s 1924 logo that captures the historic tone of this iconic collection. The holiest month in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is a time for Muslims to turn their gaze inwards and focus on their spiritual health. During this 29-to 30-day period, Muslims around the world fast during daylight hours with a view to cleansing the soul and enhancing powers of self-restraint, sacrifice and empathy for those less fortunate. This annual observance is one of the five pillars of Islam and, for visitors to the UAE during this period, offers the opportunity to gain a fascinating insight into the religious culture that underpins this society.

Iftar and suhoor One way visitors can discover the spirit of Ramdan is to attend one of the iftars or suhoors taking place each night at hotels and restaurants across the city. Iftar is the meal taken after sunset when Muslims break the day’s fast. Traditionally, this is done with fresh dates as a good way to gently prepare the body for the feast ahead as iftar can often be a large-scale affair featuring buffet tables laden with food. Suhoor takes place later on, from around 9pm and is typically a more leisurely occasion with shisha and snacks enjoyed over a longer period of time. Dubai's five-star hotels offer an incredible choice of iftar and suhoor options. One of the most luxurious iftars is held at Atlantis The Palm, Dubai at Asateer (pictured).

PUCCI / S HOP

Power print Concierge explores the enduring allure of luxury fashion house Pucci, a name that has long been synonymous with luxury and glamour WORDS BY

CAROLINE SCOTT

Colours, patterns and silhouettes go in and out of style, which means there’s always an era – or perhaps even a whole decade – when a brand or designer just doesn’t feel right for the times. The history of fashion is littered with luxury labels that were so ‘of the moment’ that when they fell from favour there was no way back. Pucci, despite being very much aligned with the ’60s and ’70s, has somehow sailed through the decades remarkably unscathed. Emilio Pucci, who was from an influential Florentine family, established his eponymous brand in 1947 and opened his first boutique on the island of Capri. His colourful and easy-to-wear clothes filled a gap in the market and Pucci quickly became the go-to brand of the jet set. Although his daughter, Laudomia Pucci now declares the jet set over, the Pucci print still speaks of languid days by azure seas and a rarefied life spent in the world’s most glamorous hot spots.

SHO P/ PUCCI

A clue to Pucci’s enduring appeal can, perhaps, be found in the job title that Laudomia uses to describe her role – the image director. “What I try to do is make sure there is a coherent message for the brand in the medium to long term,” she told Concierge on a recent trip to Dubai where she was presenting Pucci’s spring/summer collection to clients and VIPs. “I have had many careers within the company. I ran both it and the design team for about 10 years and then I moved from being the owner and designer to a top managerial role.” Laudomia took up the reigns on Emilio’s death in 1992 and in 2000 LVMH acquired a controlling share of the business. She remains a partial owner and still “very emotionally attached”. It’s impossible that she wouldn’t be, as the business is still headquartered at the Pucci Palazzo in Florence where she grew up and lives to this day with her own family. Not surprisingly, hers was no ordinary childhood. Before the Italian ready-to-wear shows began each season, her father would host

fashion shows in the family ballroom. His exotic clientele, which included the likes of Sophia Loren, would often drop by. “I’m like a walking archive,” says Laudomia. “When clients or designers ask me questions about Pucci, I always have the answer. When our current creative director Peter Dundas asks ‘do you think this is Pucci enough’, or ‘why is this not Pucci?’ I don’t even have to think about it, I just know.” Laudomia is no longer involved in the “day-to-day nitty gritty” of the business and says her role is to make sure the company is “not only telling a story, but making sure the story-telling continues.”

The tale began when a ski suit that Emilio Pucci had designed was photographed by Harper’s Bazaar and from there he built a clothing line. His pieces were famously worn by Jacqueline Onassis and Marilyn Monroe; the latter was even buried in Pucci. The brand is now worn by today’s ‘it’ girls with Poppy Delevingne, Jennifer Lawrence and Alexa Chung among the many celebrities regularly seen sporting the latest Pucci designs. Does Laudomia believe today’s stars can compete with the style icons of the past? “Six months ago I saw Grace Kelly – who was a friend of my father’s – on the cover of a magazine and I said to my husband: ‘Can you imagine seeing

your grandmother like this?’ What it means is that we haven’t been able to replace these icons and we haven’t been able to replace that lifestyle, their personalities, style and that beautiful dream. They were larger than life. There is a period of history that belongs to those women. Today, the individual is maybe less important.” That said, Laudomia is all too aware that the success of the brand lies in its future, not the past. “We need to learn from younger people and other countries – not just look back at ourselves, but look ahead. That is a challenge for all of us.” Referencing the fact that Marilyn Monroe doesn’t have much resonance for young Chinese women, she says: “You have to be sure that your values

are relevant to today’s girls and that’s why I spend a lot of time talking to young people. My children are helping with this, because our way of life is not the same as theirs.” The ‘way of life’ she refers to is that of jetsetting women who were the earliest proponents of Pucci. “The jet set was a small group of privileged people, successful men with beautiful wives who would travel from America to between two or three places in the summer and in the winter; New York, London, Paris and possibly Rome. For one reason or another, they would all know each other – this is what my mother tells me – but today we are discovering people all around the planet that we have things in common with. This group no longer exists as women have changed. They have taken their lives into their own hands and they don’t have time for all of this now. The world’s got smaller, but we [as a brand] are now talking to people in Russia, Japan, South America and Dubai. Private jets are all over the place and no one stays in the same place more than a few days!” Accessibility, visibility and relevancy are all of paramount importance to Pucci’s Norwegian designer Peter Dundas. “For me, moving the print on was a challenge, but my main aim was to move to other areas of a woman’s wardrobe,” he told Vogue recently. “I saw Pucci as a jet-set label, but when I arrived, I really wanted to work on the red-carpet pieces.” For spring/summer, he focused on what he describes as a new category of “sporty deluxe”. The collection is as appealing to Middle Eastern fashionistas as it is to New York socialites and, while some of Paris and Milan’s grand old fashion houses may have

been slow at allowing people ‘in’ (holding on to a sense of exclusivity for dear life), the Pucci family has always mixed public and private. “My house has always been the office and now I’ve taken the archives to my country house,” says Laudomia. “Yes, I am embracing the outside world,” she adds. As to whether her own children will work within the family business, she’s not sure. “My eldest daughter is an artist in her own right. She’s been with Dior for the last few summers and she’s graduating now. We’ll see. It’s a question of talent. If they want to, they have the opportunity, but if they don’t have the talent, then no!” 9

s*uce When it comes to local home-grown concepts, s*uce is one of Dubai’s original innovators. A contemporary multi-brand fashion and lifestyle company that adds a touch of fun for style seekers, s*uce has several stores and concepts offering everything from bespoke dresses to quirky home décor. Inspired by the talent of local designers, founder Zayan Ghandour started s*uce after moving to Dubai from Lebanon and discovering a need in the city for novel brands in intimate stores. “Shopping in a boutique is a much more personal experience because the collections are always exclusive and tightly edited and you can discover new up-and-coming designers that you won’t find anywhere else,” Ghandour says. With the help of her creative buying team, she prides herself on introducing fresh and exclusive talent to the wardrobes of Dubai shoppers and unveiling limited edition collaborations created exclusively for s*uce customers. Part of the company’s success is due to the unique shopping environments it creates. “We work very hard to ensure the shopping experience is as fun as it is exciting. This encompasses everything from the secret scent we use in the stores and the design of the boutiques to the shopping bags and the sales staff,” Ghandour says. A notion that’s clearly working, this year s*uce celebrates its 10th anniversary. Over the past decade the brand has grown from one point of sale to seven, including the more recent addition of casualwear under s*uce In the Hood, beach-themed s*uce On-Sea and s*uce Gifts, a lifestyle boutique that

Much as its name suggests, The Odd Piece steers far from the norm. The home design store exhibits one-of-a-kind furniture, refurbished vintage pieces and eclectic home accessories that have been sourced and hand-selected from across the globe by Saudi Arabian Creative Director Arwa Hafiz. Hafiz says: “I do not restrict myself to any style or era so there is a very varied clientele that’s interested in The Odd Piece. It’s all about design, craftsmanship, uniqueness, character and having that special something that catches my eye.” The boutique presents six highly-varied collections under the tags Traditional, MidCentury Modern, 1970s, Contemporary, Arabesque and Electric. Most are made up of statement pieces meant to transform a room and are designed to give ambience an instant upgrade. Hafiz adds: “My clients come to me once they have bought the basics and want a striking chair, coffee table, chandelier or floor lamp that stands out. I offer pieces that will change a room, give it character and make it more interesting. Sometimes it’s the clean lines of a mid-century modern sofa, or the bold brass and glass of a huge 1970s coffee table, or even a mirror masterpiece that becomes the centrepiece of the room.” However, if you’re not as creatively minded as Hafiz, the boutique is designed in such a way as to allow clients to view each piece in its intended context to help gain an idea of how it might look in a home setting and to experiment with different styles and textures. WEST L.A. WEST L.A. is a contemporary multi-brand store where the tastes and preferences of its customers are as much a part of the company as the clothing. A fashionista’s dream, the boutique specialises in stocking underground brands that have been sourced from around the world and can’t be found anywhere else in the Middle East. Founder Alia Korayem says: “We cater to a market that is willing to take a risk when it comes to fashion and, rather than following trends, creates them. We buy small quantities so that our shoppers have an exclusive experience and know that the chances of anyone else wearing the same item are extremely small.” A key part of Korayem’s business lies in establishing personal relationships with customers, who then return again and again. “We don’t just focus on selling products; we want to sell a lifestyle. It’s all about breaking boundaries, letting loose and having fun with your sense of style,” Korayem says. “I see a change in the Dubai fashion scene – people are willing to be more adventurous with their style. People have realised that you don’t have to be decked in a designer label; why not mix it up with a quirky sweater or awesome ripped up denim? Our shoppers are really incredible, they love experimenting and mixing items you would never think of.” Current summer collections available at the boutique, which is located in Jumeirah, include vibrant printed cut-out dresses, chic maxi skirts, sheer kimonos and edgy swimwear that can be mixed and matched in order to create an effortless beach-to-street transition for a selection of looks.

o’de rose This quirky boutique is a result of a fusion of the skills and passions of three cousins, and is one of Dubai’s most unique stores. Stocking a combination of ready-to-wear fashion, jewellery, interiors and art, the store focuses on handmade bespoke products that represent Arabic heritage with a modern twist. One of the founders, Nadine Kassem Khoury, says: “Shopping at o’de rose is truly an experience that engages all five senses, even down to the little signature touches such as offering

a refreshing glass of rose water to customers while they shop. Each product in o’de rose is hand-picked and handmade. As such each piece possesses so much character and tells a unique story.” The founding cousins, Nadine, Dania and Mimi, came together in the UAE from New York, Beirut and London respectively, collating their eclectic experiences to create truly unique-to-Dubai launches. These include Sarah’s Bag, a collection of vibrant clutches inspired by Mexican culture, and Marie Stalla for o’de rose, an exclusive summer collection by French designer Stalla that was created to represent the bold yet feminine character of the boutique. However there’s more to the family-owned boutique than striking interiors and beautiful products; the company is on a mission to give back to the local community by offering disadvantaged artisans a platform to showcase their products. Kassem Khoury adds: “We encourage local craftspeople, whether from underprivileged societies or women’s organisations, to use their own traditional craft skills as a means of living and of income generation, thereby preserving the survival of traditional crafts and Middle Eastern heritage.” Where: Al Wasl Road and Galeries Lafayette, The Dubai Mall / Contact: 04 3487990

A charmed life From prehistoric amulets worn to ward off danger to modern style statements and sentimental keepsakes, charms have long been more than simple adornments

One of the oldest forms of jewellery, the charm first made its appearance in prehistoric times when clothing was simply a means of protection from the elements and notions of style and adornment were still a long way off. According to historians, folk in the Neolithic age crafted charm-style talismans from bones, shells, stones and leather string and wore them to ward off evil spirits. Charms appear again around 75,000 years ago in Africa and then in Germany, where tiny motifs carved from mammoth tusks dating back around 30,000 years have been found. In ancient Egypt, charms served a variety of purposes and were carried to promote luck, for identification and as religious symbols. Early Egyptians believed in the supernatural qualities of charms and would bury their dead with as many amulets as they could afford in the hope a prosperous afterlife was assured. In recent times, widespread belief in the power of charms has waned and they have taken on a largely style-orientated appeal. In the 1800s, Queen Victoria popularised the charm as a fashion accessory and amassed a large collection of valuable amulets which she wore on bracelets and as pendants – a habit that quickly spread among the noble classes of Europe. In the 1950s, stylish women of the day took to attaching different pendants to bracelets as a way of marking personal milestones, investing charms with a sentimental significance. This, by and large, is the contemporary attitude towards charms, which are now worn as a fashion accessory, keepsake or a combination of the two. Whatever their reason, charm-bracelet enthusiasts will find no shortage of tiny silver keys, model animals and miniature monuments in Dubai’s high-end jewellery stores, where aficionados building their collections can browse beautifully wrought amulets in all shapes and sizes.

Additional charm designs are dedicated to specific moments in time, for example the love letter-inspired typewriter. Another recent launch is the Lockit collection that ref lects the love locks tradition where couples attach padlocks to bridge railings and throw the key into the water to seal their love for eternity. For a romantic touch, the padlock on the necklace can be removed and worn by a loved one.

Pandora One brand that embraces the ethos of using charms to commemorate occasions is Pandora, a Danish jeweller specialising in stylish bracelets with interchangeable charms. There are more than 700 designs for collectors to mix and match, from abstract patterns and animal motifs to event-specific mementos such as birthday cakes. “Pandora’s bracelet model is a modern interpretation of the Egyptian concept. When we launched the charm bracelet in 2000, it was an entirely new idea to the market. No one else had done it and it really resonated with women,” says Stephen Fairchild, Pandora’s chief creative officer. The bracelet chains are kept simple to serve as a blank canvas for the pendants that can be attached to them, many of which are colourfully adorned with pearl, enamel, wood, Murano glass and gemstones. With so many possible combinations, collectors are assured that each Pandora bracelet will be different. “Pandora jewellery has an emotional and modern quality that appeals to many women. We play with elements from nature, colours, patterns and new trends to fashion and interior design, but still maintain our feminine style,” adds Pandora designer, Lone Rønnow Frandsen.

Tiffany & Co. In 1889, Tiffany & Co. entered the charm trade with a simple link bracelet that featured a single heart dangling from a chain. This original design is now one of the brand’s best-selling models and is kept up to date with a growing collection of charms that can be added to or removed from the bracelet as desired. While many of its charm designs play on the theme of love through engraved Tiffany & Co. hearts and locks, other subjects in the form of birthday presents, handbags, angels, animals and cars have also been introduced, bringing a playful edge to the expanding range. Seasonal specials and collaborative collections weave new influences into the designs. Fashion designer Paloma Picasso regularly creates charms, among other jewellery pieces, for the brand. Following in the footsteps of her father, Pablo Picasso, her designs are innovative and colourful. “My jewellery is about a joy for life and a timeless beauty that transcends fashion. Tiffany & Co. has given me access to a marvellous palette of gems such as amethyst, crystal, rubellite and diamonds and the gifted hands of their skilled artisans have given me the freedom to create whatever I dream up,” says Picasso.

The birth and subsequent spread of Islam from the Arabian Peninsula to the shores of the Mediterranean and the eastern reaches of Iran brought with it a rich cultural influence. As a result, between the seventh and 12th centuries in particular, the Islamic civilisation became reputed for its great scientific, philosophic and artistic contributions. One important aspect of this was the development of specific styles of Islamic pottery. Countless academic journals, excavation reports and field surveys have since been dedicated to the subject and what started out as the humble craft of shaping earthenware became the prevalent form of Islamic art from the ninth to the 19th century – both in the form of pottery and ornate tiles for walls. Research on its quality and wide array of techniques has led to the Islamic period being regarded as one of the most important in the development of fine-glazed ceramics. From the technically complex ninth century Mesopotamian miniature lustre bowls, to the elegant blue and white Persian Safavid pottery vessels inspired by porcelain from the Yuan and Ming dynasties of China, each period and region added something new. Depending on the context – either religious or for use at court – floral, geometric, calligraphic and animal decoration was used and often combined to result in rich and luxurious vessels. As depictions of human figures in a religious setting was largely frowned upon, tiles decorating the interior walls of mosques tended to show beautiful f loral, geometric and calligraphic motifs.

DIS C O VER/ PO TTERY

Pottery-making first flourished as an art form in Iraq during the ninth century. As a result, ingenious artisans from all over the Islamic world flocked to the capital of the caliphate, Baghdad. Their earliest works were visibly experimental in nature, but a combination of experience and innovation set the tone for later developments. Foreign invasions and dynastic upheavals meant master potters moved with their secrets to new centres of power. Aesthetic styles and technical knowhow evolved in this way over the years and Islam’s medieval artisans left a rich heritage of cultural treasures behind.

1

Referring to the technical side of Islamic ceramics, Kristina Sanne, a London-based art consultant and Islamic Art expert, says: “Potters used minerals that were available to them, such as lapis lazuli and turquoise, continuously developing new techniques to enhance the aesthetic. A striking development was the creation of lustre-ware, which was fired once with an opaque white glaze and a second time in a low-oxygen kiln using glazes containing silver and copper oxides that gave the decoration a shimmery metallic finish.” It was this innovation by the Abbasid artisans of Baghdad that established the legacy of early Islamic potters. The technique was valued by many generations and lustre-ware reached a peak of creativity in Persia during the late 12th

2

and early 13th centuries. According to art historians, potterymaking suffered a blow when the Mongol invasion paralysed Persia’s cultural life and, sadly, it never fully recovered. By the end of the 13th century, the Mongol had largely adopted Islam and supported a revival of its arts. Unfortunately, the new pottery which was created was more subdued in spirit. Islamic artisans did produce some magnificent objects between the 14th and 19th century, but overall, their work at this time lacked the distinctive character of their counterparts from the Middle Ages.

Some of the finest, most authentic, examples of Islamic pottery to have survived the ages are today on display at museums and across the globe. It is important to recognise, however, that the intricately decorated objects showcased at museums were made largely for the wealthy and make up only a small proportion of the total amount of pottery produced. The vast majority was much simpler, unglazed and wheel-thrown vessels meant to perform a wide range of functional tasks. For Abu Dhabi resident Ruth Impey, vessels of the functional variety are her focus. Originally from Scotland, Impey has been working with ceramics since her move to the UAE in 2009. Upon realising the clay she initially began creating pottery with was imported from Europe, she launched the Pottery Research Project and a quest for local clay.

At the forefront of the local pottery tradition in the UAE is Ras Al Khaimah, once known as Julfar. The emirate was famed for its Julfar ware – a type of coarse unglazed pottery – that was produced from the 12th century until around 1950. Commercial pottery production thrived at the foot of the Hajar Mountains with the growth of trade during the 15th and 16th centuries. In fact, the remains of at least 20 stone kilns carved into Wadi Haqeel’s earth here can still be seen in the area – their significance clear, as essentially the last sites of a significant pottery industry in a pre-oil UAE. The Pottery Research Project aims to enrich the country’s cultural narrative. It also endeavours to create an archive of existing research on pottery, retell the forgotten stories of the Julfar potters and analyse clay sources to ascertain minerals that could be used by modern potters. Impey is currently working with academics, museums and Bedouin tribesmen to document traditional techniques, resources and firing methods. She is also reaching out to the government in the hope that historic kiln sites can be preserved for future generations. Impey hopes to make and show a body of work honed from locally sourced clay, formed using traditional and modern

methods. Last year, she travelled to Wadi Haqeel to reconnect with the last remaining links to a bygone era. Here, she met Ahmed Rashed, a potter’s son who spoke of the gruelling conditions in which his father worked. Families would grind mud from stones and collect enough wood to make a fire that could burn at over 700 degrees Celsius for four or five hours in order to shape the clay. “I was able to observe some ancient techniques, such as using a seashell to give a pot’s exterior a smooth finish,” she recalls. Impey received a bag of clay and soil which she brought back to her studio. “The clay becomes a beautifully rich red colour upon firing and produces a strong body, which means it will be possible to make anything from tableware to large jars from it,” she explains. RAK Ceramics, the largest ceramics manufacturer in the world, is also based in Ras Al Khaimah. The company’s geologist is helping Impey experiment with blended local clay and gain access to clay quarries. She hopes to build a replica kiln

from the Julfar period in order to fire pots using traditional techniques. Impey also envisions a visitor centre at Wadi Haqeel, where Emiratis can become apprentice potters and visitors can see traditional pots created before purchasing one. Impey says: “By re-establishing clay sources that can be used by local artists, my dream is to revive the ancient craft.” 8

Early incarnations of the spice souk, traced to around 1850, saw it born from a collection of humble stalls offering herbs, spices and medicinal plants from India and the Orient. As Dubai’s trading port status grew, so did the souk, which saw the number of traders and shops swell during the 1970s. Now, the vibrant space, located behind the gold souk in Deira, makes a unique day out, spent meandering through its labyrinthine lanes. The enchanting space comprises a wonderful patchwork as spices and herbs spill out of sacks, baskets and drawers at every turn. Flavourings from all corners of the globe are represented from the familiar seasonings of cinnamon and cardamom to the more exotic. Visitors will also find handmade incense, tobacco, rice, teas and a wide selection of dried fruit. As in all of Dubai’s souks, bartering with traders is encouraged as part of the experience. Open until 10pm daily, a visit during the cooler evening makes for a memorable outing.

Into the blue An enchanting underwater world is waiting to be discovered at Ambassador Lagoon in Dubai

When Jacques Cousteau co-developed the world’s first aqua lung in 1942, its purpose was to enable cave exploration during marine conservation work. Little did he know that his invention would later give birth to the recreational sport of scuba diving enjoyed by enthusiasts the world over keen to explore the oceans. Taking on another incarnation, a form of the sport gaining popularity has come from the introduction of diving experiences in aquariums amongst hundreds of varieties of sea life. Ambassador Lagoon at Atlantis The Palm, Dubai, is one such facility. The 46-hectare aquarium is the largest open-air marine exhibit in the Middle East and has fascinated visitors for years, thanks to its habitat brimming with sea life and a striking seascape inspired by the mythical lost world of Atlantis. Scuba diving in the tank is a fairly recent addition to the experiences on offer and while some may be sceptical about closed-water dive locations, the unique environment at Ambassador Lagoon offers a number of exciting advantages.

It is home to an estimated 65,000 marine animals from a multitude of species, many of which would take most eagle-eyed divers years or even decades to spot in the wild, let alone come face to face with. A bonus of the controlled environment in the 11.5-millionlitre tank is that the crystal clear water offers no limit to visibility; for both divers and the sea life. As divers don the pre-prepared equipment and get ready to submerge via a pool at the roof of the tank, instructors offer a piece of advice: “Don’t touch any of the sea life and be warned – some are very friendly.” This truth is realised minutes later when an inquisitive stingray heads straight for the group. With its fins billowing it slows down, skimming just inches overhead while watching inquisitively and then gliding away as though having determined that the divers are not intruders in his subaquatic home. While the pure thrill of spotting a ray within an aquarium may be considered less so than in the wild, glancing upwards and spying a hammerhead shark cutting through the water

only 10 metres away changes that perception. An added plus certainly comes from knowing the hammerhead is very well fed and not searching for a snack. While there is presently only one hammerhead in Ambassador Lagoon, a greater number of Blacktip Reef Sharks circle the upper half of the tank in its trail and, looking down, schools of two-fined Bowhead Guitarfish rest their half-shark, half-ray bodies on the sandy aquarium floor. As the gentle current guides divers in a circuit around the aquarium, close encounters with a variety of rays become a regular occurrence. Highlights include meeting Cownose Rays identified by their indented snouts, Mobula with protruding devil-like horns and

rare Spotted Marble Rays that try to disguise themselves by burying under the sand on the bottom of the tank. Large brightly coloured Golden Trevally swim in schools, surrounding divers and creating a calming veil from the larger sea animals that exist beyond their yellow curtain. Elsewhere, Crescent Angelfish dart around the lost Atlantis-style wreckage, while shy Giant Grouper peek out from their hiding places down below. Through the aquarium’s sweeping windows, onlookers marvel at the scene from the hotel’s viewing areas and a quick wave from divers gets an enthusiastic reaction from excited children pressed up against the glass. Divers are also given a glimpse inside fine-dining seafood restaurant Ossiano with a truly unique perspective on the dining destination, famed for its aquarium backdrop. The allotted time below the surface is just enough to complete a couple of rotations of the tank, although there is the feeling of only having just begun to glimpse a small selection of the incredible variety of underwater life within. Once emerged from the deep and with the salt water washed off, the captivation continues as thoughts remain below the water’s surface, swimming in the memories of the magical close encounters.

EXPERIENCE

A place to...

Explore history Delve into the origins of the emirate and experience the traditions that set the city apart

WALKING TOUR The Dubai Museum is located close to the historic Dubai Creek, making it the perfect place from which to continue your history lesson by walking through the traditional quarter to the water’s edge. Within a few minutes’ walk of the museum, visitors can explore areas they’ve just read about, such as Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood and the city’s numerous souks. Hire an abra and continue the tour on the other side of the creek to find the spice and gold souks, among other cultural treats. A number of outlets offer walking tours, including the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding, which is located close to the museum in the heart of the historical neighbourhood. Contact: 04 3536666

While the UAE may be only four decades old, Dubai has a history that is richer than some may first imagine. The Dubai Museum in the traditional city quarter of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood brings together all aspects of the emirate’s past, present and future under one roof; in one of the oldest existing buildings in the city, Al Fahidi Fort. The museum was created in 1971 with the aim of educating visitors about traditional life in Dubai and has progressively grown in terms of exhibits and numbers passing through its doors each year. Ancient artefacts can be found inside the structure, alongside a number of exhibitions that provide valuable historical insights in entertaining settings for all the family. The experience begins with displays in and around the main courtyard of traditional dhows, houses and antiques such as instruments, tools, clothing and weapons. As guests move through the museum, they’ll discover plaques and videos detailing Dubai’s development over the centuries and up to the present day. In another area, several 3D scenes depict life in the early settlements, offering a valuable glimpse of the region’s culture. An archaeology section displays artefacts from local settlements thought to date as far back as 3,000BCE, recovered from tombs unearthed in the emirate. Whether this is a first or return trip to the UAE, The Dubai Museum is certainly worth exploring.

Over the course of two hours guests will be presented with a carefully arranged assortment of sandwiches, French pastries, freshly baked buns and cakes, accompanied by

It doesn’t get much more luxurious than an afternoon tea menu presided over by a chef whose restaurants have earned three Michelin stars. Gagnaire has developed a decadent high-tea concept especially for the recently opened eatery that offers modern interpretations of French fare peppered with Arabian twists. Start with an array of fine sandwiches such as mozzarella and pesto Croque Monsieur, egg mayonnaise with quail egg and caviar and Balik salmon with Jacob’s Cream, followed by Choix pastries and sultana scones with clotted cream and bitter orange and strawberry jam. The icing on the cake is the Verrine ‘Hommage a Dubai’; a cake created especially for the city that contains camel milk and dates. Raffles Salon As the shopping capital of the Middle East, fashion plays a key part in the modern culture of Dubai. This influence has extended to the kitchen of Raffles Salon where each day chefs prepare a fashion-themed afternoon tea experience for style-savvy guests, complete with miniature stiletto cakes, handbag-shaped cookies and makeup-themed puddings. Situated close to Wafi Mall, the lounge is the ideal destination to take a pause from

Décor to dine for Stunning restaurant settings add a touch of class when eating out in Dubai

As an emerging global culinary hub, when it comes to eating out in Dubai, visitors are spoilt for choice. In an increasingly competitive restaurant market, the aesthetic and ambience of a venue rates almost as highly as the cuisine. On Dubai’s dining scene, a host of beautifully designed restaurants has marked it out as a destination specialising in the extraordinary. Discerning diners looking for the extra special can choose from grand restaurants with an aquarium as a backdrop or venues where influences from the Ottoman era are incorporated. At its best, restaurant décor has the ability to transport guests around the world or through history, giving a flavour of another time and place in striking effects created by world-renowned architects and designers. In Dubai, just about anything seems possible as the visuals and themes set the tone in a reflection of what to expect from the menu before it is opened. From the grand palace-style atrium at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray’s Imperium to Peruvian supper club The Act at Shangri-La Hotel Dubai where an elaborate theatre setting takes centre stage, Concierge takes a look at the venues that transform a meal into an all-encompassing sensory experience.

As dramatic dining experiences go, The Act takes the experience to another level. Accessed via a private elevator from a side entrance to Shangri-La Hotel Dubai, the first sign that there’s something unusual about the restaurant is an upturned painting taking pride of place at the entrance. Once inside, guests are greeted with a view that wouldn’t be uncommon in 19th century Paris: a small but grand Moulin Rouge-style cabaret theatre with circlular tables on the ground floor and balcony above which faces the focal point – a stage. Beyond its distinct decorative purpose, the stage curtain is raised several times throughout the evening as a show, the theme of which changes every few weeks, begins. Expect everything from acrobats and aerial silk dancers to magicians, actors and moments where the audience is encouraged to participate. While the show concept may be a unique selling point for many visitors, the cuisine deserves as much attention. Peruvian delicacies are made with top-quality ingredients, presented beautifully and served silver servicestyle. Guests have a number of options when dining at The Act. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, diners can enjoy a three-course dinner by selecting any of the dishes from a vast set menu. The price

starts at AED300 per person and increases as the number of starters, mains, sides and desserts are increased. On a Thursday and Sunday, diners can choose from an à la carte menu or opt for a similar set-menu package. This is a restaurant experience designed to be enjoyed over a number of hours as diners linger over dishes and enjoy the show. At The Act, the grand theatre setting essentially defines the dining experience. At other Dubai venues, the décor is used to enhance the ambience and set the scene for

the culinary offerings to come. Imperium at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray is one such venue. The interior of this French brasserie resembles the entrance of the Dolmabachçe Palace in Istanbul Turkey; a building made famous during the Ottoman era. As the name may suggest, Imperium is the very essence of grandeur. Gilded white pillars line the marble-floored hall, crystal chandeliers hang from the hand-painted ceiling and an al fresco terrace offers striking views over the Arabian Gulf. Every detail is meticulously thought out, from silk curtains featuring Turkish embroidery to dark wood furniture covered in fabric bearing Ottoman sari designs. The opulent setting is complemented by a decadent buffet-style menu featuring Gallicinspired delicacies and international dishes to suit a range of palates. The restaurant is open every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner with special brunches on Thursday evening, Friday afternoon and Saturday afternoon, the latter of which also includes entertainment from a live jazz band. To make a lasting impression, décor doesn’t have to be over-dramatic. In fact, it can even be informative as the designers behind LatinAmerican supperclub Izel at Conrad Dubai

prove. Named after the ancient Mayan goddess of the earth and moon and the protector of the sea, the restaurant design offers interesting insights into South American culture. Stories are told of Mayan, Aztec and Olmec civilisations in a series of intricate wall murals while carved figurines placed around the space are based on cultural representations to be found in the Mexican National Museum for Anthropology. European influences representing Spanish colonialism are also present in furniture detailing and mantilla lace that drapes the windows and chandeliers. Dark furniture tones create a sophisticated ambience that’s brought to life with the fiery colour palette in the artwork. Some of the most striking art pieces include a huge carving of the

Aztec calendar – instantly recognisable by its wheel shape – in the main dining room and murals of Latin American women by artist George Yepes in the lounge and bar. The structure of the expansive venue accentuates its purpose as a supper club with a large dining space complete with an open kitchen, private dining room for special occasions, a bar where drinks experts serve up cocktails, terrace lounge spaces to enjoy Cuban cigars and a dance floor area. All this, combined with live music from an authentic Latino band and a menu boasting South American cuisine from across Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Peru and beyond, creates

an authentic fiesta-style atmosphere in the heart of Downtown Dubai. At the other end of the city, on the crescent of Palm Jumeirah, Japanese-Peruvian restaurant Nobu Dubai exhibits the work of famed architects Rockwell Group. Based in the heart of Atlantis The Palm, Dubai, the venue has been designed as if submerged under an ocean wave with sweeping arched wooden ceilings setting the scene. Details such as hand-wrought iron columns of flowers represent both traditional Middle Eastern architectural inf luences and the restaurant’s Japanese heritage. Each finely crafted aspect of the interior comes together to reflect the cuisine of signature dishes such as Miso-marinated Black Cod. Elsewhere in Dubai, stunning decorative details are the undoubted star of the show. Fine-dining seafood restaurant Al Mahara at Burj Al Arab features a huge floor-to-ceiling aquarium within its walls. Here, guests can gaze at the sealife swimming past as they explore the gourmet menu. Elsewhere, German restaurant Der Keller at Jumeirah Beach Hotel transports diners to Germany with a typically European interior of red brick arches and solid oak furniture, adorned with wine barrels for an authentic taste of Germany. Der Keller is in fact one of the oldest restaurants in Dubai, hinting that the trend for presenting aesthetically elaborate décor as a fitting accompaniment to delicious food is far from a recent development and one that’s here to stay.

COMMUNITY ARTS MARKET

800 33232

Some of Dubai’s malls are very large so to save time, pick up a map at the entrance so you can find the stores you want to visit quickly. In most malls similar outlets are grouped together. For a quiet and leisurely shopping experience, visit Dubai’s malls throughout the week to avoid the weekend crowds. When shopping in the traditional souks, be prepared to haggle. Vendors expect it. Before buying gold or visiting the Gold Souk, find out the current market price of gold from your hotel concierge to ensure that you do not pay over the odds. Some malls specialise in particular kinds of shopping, for example, home furnishings, luxury labels or high-street brands. Decide what you want from your shopping trip and pick the right mall for you.

DUBAI COMMUNITY THEATRE & ARTS CENTRE (DUCTAC)

A unique engineering nexus of strength and seafaring innovation, dhows are vessels that have endured for centuries and, to this day, loom large in the region for both sheer presence and function. Down at Dubai Creek visitors can vividly connect with the craft and its utility – from its latter day use as recreational vessels for tours and dining, to its more traditional form as robust transporters of cargo. The unique setting offers a glimpse into the past when these grand boats were the lifeblood of the nation, long before the discovery of oil. Vital to the fishing industry and bustling trade on the creek banks, the dhow’s place in Dubai’s history is assured. During a visit to Dubai Creek, you can also witness a historic tradition of construction that can only be passed down from generation to generation. Here, the craftsmen resort to the most basic tools to bring their dhows to life. From there, visitors can also explore Dubai's souks, which are positioned alongside the river banks.

MUSEUMS

The Dubai Moving Image Museum (DMIM) is a welcome addition to the city’s cultural scene and a space like no other in the region, tracing, as it does, the progression of visual entertainment from its inception to the advent of early cinema. The collection is all about moving the two-dimensional image before the technology to do so was invented – the kind we now take for granted through video games, cartoons and the latest apps. Science geeks will feel just as at home here as history buffs… as will filmmakers, animators, artists and students of all ages. Contact: 04 4216679

CITY DINING

PIPE DREAMS The shisha pipe has been an integral part of Middle Eastern culture for centuries and is a popular ritual for those looking to relax, socialise or simply pass the time of day. Although there is no dispute that shisha came from this part of the world, the exact origins of shisha remain under debate with Turkey, Egypt, Syria and Iran all laying claim to the initiation of this historic practice. Its widespread use in this region has given rise to many different names, depending on the destination. All, however, refer to the same Arabian activity of inhaling flavoured tobacco through a waterpipe. In Dubai, there is a host of first-rate venues to enjoy shisha. Two popular spots include Shades at The Address Dubai Marina (04 4367777) which boasts stunning marina views and Shimmers at Mina A’ Salam (04 3666730).

DUBAI CREEK, SOUKS AND DUBAI MUSEUM The heart of the city, the Creek is a stunning spot to catch a glimpse of authentic Dubai. See dhows (traditional boats) ply their trade along the waters while early morning visitors will see fishermen at work on the river banks. Also in this part of the city is Dubai Museum, which makes for a fascinating day out with interactive displays and exhibits charting the emirate’s history from its pearl diving days. 1 The Dubai Mall 2 Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood

I moved from London to Dubai six years ago. My favourite things about living here are the constant sunshine, the endless shopping malls, the fivestar restaurants and living in spacious accommodation with a swimming pool in my building and beach around the corner. The ease of access to other Middle Eastern countries and Asia, the low cost of fuel and the opportunity for business are other key factors. At weekends, I love to go to Le Serre at Vida Downtown Dubai for a late breakfast with friends. The Farm at Al Barari also has a beautiful setting and a fresh healthy menu; I go there just for the mushroom soup. La Petite Maison at Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) has stunning décor, great service and fantastic French food. Although I’m not usually a dessert person, I always make sure I leave space for the crème brûlée. Japanese restaurant Okku at The H Hotel, Dubai, has a great

interior which creates a very intimate atmosphere. My favourite dish there by far is the spicy tuna on crispy rice. If I’m homesick and need a little taste of home, I go to Reform Social & Grill in The Lakes, close to Emirates Golf Club, the food is great and the venue has an authentic British gastro-pub feel. With regards to shopping, I love The Dubai Mall as it has everything in one place. Although, I must admit, I very rarely make it out of Fashion Avenue unless my husband takes me to Magnolia Bakery in Bloomingdale’s Home. For a taste of culture, I visit Alserkal Avenue arts district and Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. You really get a feel for Dubai’s art scene and culture in these places. I also love the Art Nights events held in DIFC and the annual Design Days Dubai art fair. I have my own business so it’s very easy to become overwhelmed sometimes but I find surrounding myself with

positive people keeps me on the right track. Everybody in Dubai has such an entrepreneurial ‘can do’ attitude and I’m fortunate enough to have built a tight network of friends. Each year I give back by donating a piece of artwork to either the auction or raffle at the annual Oxfam gala dinner. Rooney Mara signed the piece I donated last year and Colin Firth did the same the year before. Winning Emirates Woman magazine’s Woman of the Year award in the artist category last year was amazing and definitely one of my Dubai highlights. To have received recognition for doing something I love was really special.
