—— Charismatic and engaging, much like his inimitable designs, Italian jeweller Roberto Coin is known for making an instant impression. Visiting the emirate to launch the Falcon collection, Coin enthused that his love for the region and his eagerness to cement relationships with his growing clientele in the Middle East was the inspiration behind this current collection. “I wanted to do something for our customers in the region. Of course many have honoured the falcon before, but this is jewellery and it does not naturally lend itself to the falcon’s shape,” says Coin. “Everything about it, the form, the colour, is done in a different manner. And with the falcon, like many of my other animalier designs, it was very important to get the proportions right. The eyes must come alive.”

The limited-edition collection, which first launched exclusively in Dubai, features a stunning statement ring, bracelet and cuff links – all crafted from rose and black gold, sprinkled with white, brown and black diamonds, as well as onyx. “To create the likeness of the falcon we studied many different photos and images. We studied the birds in different positions, different proportions and colours,” Coin explains. In addition to the Falcon collection, jewellery aficionados are spoilt for choice. Undoubtedly one of the biggest fascinations with Roberto Coin collections, aside from the creativity and quality craftsmanship, are the dazzling array of designs. Coin adds: “We create 600 new models every year and unlike many other brands we want to dress you differently. That is our mentality. We want to give you the opportunity to have something unique, something you want to buy. For me, innovation is the future, if you don’t innovate you don’t become efficient.” View Roberto Coin collections at the Damas Les Exclusives boutique at The Dubai Mall, 04 3398535

CART I E R CARTIER D’ART BALLON BLEU DE CARTIER

—— A beloved house emblem, the regal panther receives a new lease of life with the Cartier d’Art Ballon Bleu de Cartier. Craftsmen at the maison have used a complex Etruscan enamelling technique to create miniscule beads of gold that are then meticulously placed on the dial to give depth and emotion to the panther’s expressive appearance. The design takes pride of place within the yellow gold, diamond-set case. Another striking feature of the Ballon Bleu de Cartier timepiece is its crown, boasting a bold sapphire cabochon. An artistic labour of love, with each delicate timepiece taking over a month to create, this rare series features just 30 numbered pieces.

—— The butterfly has long been a symbol of delicate beauty and quiet strength, charming characteristics that Harry Winston seeks to encapsulate in the stunning Premier Precious Butterfly Automatic collection. Using intricate feather art to create the dial façade, craftsmen then use a shimmering powder that’s found on the butterfly’s wing to lift its colours. The skill required to harvest the powder and then painstakingly place it onto the dial is one that the house has taken over three years to perfect. One of three variations, this model features a delicate 18-carat rose gold case dotted with 57 brilliant-cut diamonds and a stylish Champagne-toned satin strap.

Among the standout designs, this timepiece proudly recreates the image of a falcon through the delicate practice of eggshell marquetry. The process involves the maître d’art carefully cutting and inlaying eggshell fragments into the falcon design before enriching the pieces with colour, giving the features of this magnificent creature added complexity and texture. THE GREAT BRITISH RENAISSANCE ——— A love for aviation and traditional values makes Bremont one of the most inspiring manufactures of our time

Centuries ago Britain was renowned the world over as a principal base for watch manufacturing but today only a handful of mechanical manufactures exist in the country. The tides are changing however, and the rise of Bremont represents a welcome resurgence of fine British craftsmanship in the world of watchmaking. Founded in 2002 and headquartered at Henley-on-Thames in England, Bremont produces beautiful pilot’s watches of exceptional quality both in terms of aesthetics and engineering. All Bremont watches are designed, manufactured and assembled in England – a fact that is a matter of pride for the co-founders and brothers Nick and Giles English who share a passion for flying historic aircraft as well as for fine timepieces. “We have always been inspired by a love of engineering, aviation and adventure. As pilots ourselves, aviation is always at the heart of all our designs and inherent in every watch. When we started we had a very clear view of what we wanted to achieve – beautiful and classic-styled watches that looked great in the boardroom but were also robust enough to be used in any situation. “Being British is a big point of reference and we pride ourselves on creating exclusive watches of the highest quality but also representing the best value within our price point given the engineering and craftsmanship,” says Giles English, co-founder of Bremont. Rather ironically, the name Bremont is French in origin, but it does hold deep meaning for the founders. The story behind the name relates to an incident in the late 1990s, when Nick and Giles were

flying across France in a 1930s biplane and had to make an emergency landing because of poor weather. Keen to avoid the French authorities at the time, the brothers accepted the help of the farmer – also a gifted engineer – whose field they had landed in, staying in his home while the aircraft remained safe in his barn. Honouring the farmer’s hospitality, the brothers named the company after Antoine Bremont. With Nick and Giles English’s background in aviation, it’s no surprise that this passion is also reflected in their creations. “Watches have always historically played a pivotal role in pilot navigation and aircraft operations. Up until as recently as 20 years ago, you would literally navigate in the air using a map, compass and your trusty mechanical watch. “A watch company is a very complicated business to run. We are an engineering business, making something that is very complicated but one that also has to run a retail business, be a marketing company and be global. As a result, each day I wake up, I have another challenge and have to focus on many different areas. One thing Nick and I enjoy the most is the design side and that takes up a lot of time, but no single day is the same,” explains Giles. At Baselworld 2016, Bremont introduced a series of refined Regatta timepieces to its America’s Cup collection, as well as additions to the SOLO line of elegant automatic chronometers and a brand new Bremont SOLO-32 Collection of ladies mechanical chronometers. One of this year’s showstoppers was undoubtedly the limited-edition Boeing 100 chronograph crafted to celebrate Boeing’s

100th anniversary. A horological tribute to the commercial aircraft manufacturer, this timepiece is an aviation enthusiast’s dream. Here carbon fibre composite from the historic Boeing Dreamliner ZA004 – being used to test key green technological innovations for a more sustainable future in aviation – is cleverly integrated into the crown of each timepiece. It is also manufactured from Boeing aviation-grade Ti 6-4 titanium, said to be significantly stronger than commercial titanium, and sports a distinctive ‘Boeing brown’ colour, inspired by the same shade often used in the cockpits of older aircraft. “The British love their history and we use it to inspire our designs. We also recently unveiled our new Wright Flyer limited edition that incorporates an important part of history. In historical terms, what could be more remarkable than using some of the original fabric from the first ever powered aircraft? The 1903 Wright Flyer was built and designed by the Wright Brothers themselves in Dayton, Ohio, USA. It is the invention and aircraft that changed the way we live today and it has inspired our latest, and perhaps most unique, limited-edition timepiece,” explains Giles. Bremont is available exclusively through Rivoli in the UAE, a market that the company is keen to have a strong presence in. “We see a wonderful enthusiasm for mechanical watches in the region. The depth of knowledge and thirst for information makes it a lovely market to come into. I always appreciate coming to the Middle East and seeing the enthusiasm of collectors,” says Giles, who adds that it is an exciting time for the British watch trade.

“People forget that there is a huge history behind British watchmaking. Our goal has always been to help reinvigorate and restart the industry in Britain and we are ambitious. By having our own apprentice schemes and investing in equipment for our new parts manufacturing facility in Silverstone we are definitely building on that. It is the first time parts of this kind, on this scale, have been made in the UK for many decades. This, combined with the watch assembly workshop in Henley-on-Thames which we have had for years, is producing a secure foundation. “We are incredibly lucky that we have been able to build on the wonderful history of British watchmaking and tell a story that many people are not aware of. As long as there are people who continue to appreciate beautifully made chronometer timepieces we have a very bright future ahead.”

Among the most ancient of the world’s art forms, Arabic styles of calligraphy date as far back as 2,000BCE. Beautiful examples of this special script can be seen throughout the UAE, particularly on mosque ceilings, around souks and on important documentation. These beautiful calligraphic scripts make for a wonderfully personalised gift or a uniquely expressive piece of art.

THE ROYAL TREATMENT ——— A glorious blend of ancient traditions and ultra luxe surroundings, discover Dubai’s most noteworthy hammams

The beauty of a great hammam lies in its ability to make you feel utterly refreshed. From the warm marble slab that immediately begins to soothe weary muscles to the gently scented sudsy foam that envelopes your body, it’s impossible not to feel your worries ease away with each rejuvenating step. Originally inspired by Turkish and Moroccan elements, hammams have long been considered an important cultural and social tradition throughout the region. Visitors are welcomed to these specially heated sanctuaries where they recline on marble as a trained specialist begins to thoroughly cleanse and scrub skin in rhythmic strokes, akin to a regular massage. Dubai’s luxury spas have elevated the experience with superior service and five-star facilities, but the essence of this time-honoured ritual remains.

From warm Asian hospitality to the elegant setting and first-class facilities, much like the hotel itself, Anantara Spa at Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort is an all-encompassing experience. Having recently enjoyed a premium renovation the plush space now offers an even greater choice of pampering, not least of which is an exclusive hammam floor. In addition to a separate area for men and women, it also houses one of the city’s only dedicated couples’ hammams which is ideal for a spot of shared downtime. Drawing on ancient practices, visitors can opt for a traditional Turkish bath complete with a gentle steam, kese mitt exfoliation and soothing foam massage using handmade olive oil soap. Or, relish a two-hour session of relaxation with the Hammam Ceremony by Anantara. Offering a little twist of modernity, the treatment looks to Charme D’Orient fragrant oils for added indulgence, leaving your skin silky soft and subtly scented.

With its gorgeous oceanfront location and sprawling grounds, One&Only Royal Mirage radiates luxury and five-star living – a sentiment that certainly transcends to the hotel spa. Unwind, restore and elevate are the three core elements that make up the spa’s philosophy, and the venue’s traditional Oriental Hammam easily ticks all these boxes. There are several equally tempting treatments available including the 50-minute Moorish ritual comprised of a full body rose or mint scented natural clay wrap, as well as The Royal Hammam, an 80-minute session complete with a black soap cleanse, scrub and eucalyptus scented ghassoul clay wrap. For those eager to extend their visit, we recommend The Complete Oriental Treatment. Although you’ll find much of the same practices included in traditional treatments, the leisurely 110-minute experience also includes a rich honey mask and draws to a close with a relaxing massage in a private room.

Although it’s located in one of the emirate’s most vibrant quarters, The Spa at The Palace Downtown Dubai is undoubtedly a haven of tranquillity amidst the city’s hustle and bustle. Everything from the rich Arabesque décor to the welcoming service instantly puts visitors at ease. And any tensions you’ve failed to leave at the door are sure to melt away once you step into the spa’s inviting hammam. Borrowing from the customary practices of time-honoured Moroccan baths, the spa offers two hammam treatments. The Oriental Hammam Scrub champions Morocco’s famed black soap to deeply cleanse. This is then followed by a steam bath and intensive exfoliation. If you’re eager to take the experience a step further, opt for the Oriental Hammam Ritual. The 75-minute session, in addition to the soap cleanse, also involves the skin being slathered in a soothing blend of rose water and Rhassoul clay from the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. Following this you’re sure to step out with silky soft skin and a revived sense of wellbeing.

Often touted as one of the city’s most spectacular spas, the palatial venue at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray is certainly a sight to behold. Channelling the grandeur of the Turkish Ottoman Empire, the imperial influence is as apparent as you’d expect from a spa drawing its inspiration from such an era. Here the hammam business is taken very seriously. Taking pride of place at the heart of the spa is a dedicated hammam area bedecked in marble, gilded mosaics and murals. There are six different hammam treatments to choose from, with everything from a traditional bath to a hammam infused with an aromatic Turkish coffee peel. For a contemporary spin on the original, we suggest you try the Sultan’s with Ice Massage. The 60-minute session once again begins with a relaxing steam to prep the skin for the kese mitt body polish followed by a soapy massage. Additionally, a skin-boosting mask then offers an extra layer of nourishment, before an exhilarating hand, foot and scalp ice massage revitalises your circulation.

TIME TO REFLECT ——— The holy month is a season of spirituality and goodwill as over 1.5 billion muslims focus on the pillars of their faith

THIS SPECIAL TIME OF YEAR IS A UNIQUE OPPORTUNIT Y FOR VISITORS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT LOCAL CULTURE AND CUSTOMS, WHILE JOINING IN SOME CHERISHED TR ADITIONS

For many, Ramadan is primarily characterised by fasting – the practise of abstaining from all food and drink between the hours of sunrise and sunset. While this is certainly an important part of the Ramadan experience, it is just one of the many elements that come together during the holy month as muslims turn their gaze inwards and reflect on their faith. This special time of year is also a unique opportunity for visitors to learn more about local culture and customs, while joining in some cherished traditions. Known as the holy month, Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and always starts two weeks earlier than the previous year. The exact date of the beginning of Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the new moon, or ‘hilal’. When this slight crescent has appeared in the sky the start of the holy month is announced. The following morning at the first light of dawn fasting will commence. This year Ramadan is due to fall between June 6 and July 5, or as soon as the official Moon Sighting Committee spots the hilal. At the end of the month, when the hilal is once again observed, the three-day Eid

CONC_DXB_JUNE16_EXPERIENCE_PHOTOESSAY_Ramadan_v1_TSJC.indd 40

al-Fitr festival to break the fast begins. It’s also a special time when families and friends come together to enjoy the spirit of the season. Nasif Kayed, general manager of the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU), explains the different elements of practising Islam, especially during the holy month. “Part of the faith involves fasting during Ramadan. The idea is to teach discipline, perseverance and patience. It also makes you watch yourself very closely. During daylight hours between sunrise and sunset muslims must abstain from all food, drink, smoking, gossiping and cursing. While outsiders might think this a daunting prospect, many followers look forward to the holy month each year. The whole community does it together. It would be more difficult if you were the only one,” Kayed explains. “Of course there are some muslims who don’t anticipate the arrival of Ramadan as eagerly, but those who dive into it are rewarded by enhanced spirituality. Many of us really look forward to it because it makes us feel great to practise being good.”

WHEN THE SUN SETS, THE FAST ENDS FOR THE DAY AND FOLLOWERS CAN ENJOY THE IFTAR MEAL . IT M ARKS AN OPPORTUNIT Y TO COME TOGETHER OVER A DELICIOUS FEAST EACH NIGHT DURING R A M ADAN

Aside from the sumptuous iftars held at five-star hotels in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi, iftar is also offered at Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in the capital

The early part of the holy month is often the most challenging as fasting begins. “The first three days are very difficult for almost everyone. As the month goes on it gets better and better and by the time you’re used to it, it ends. You feel so purified that you could continue to live like it past the end of the month,” Kayed explains. When the sun sets, the fast ends for the day and followers can enjoy the iftar meal. It marks an opportunity to come together over a delicious feast each night during Ramadan. As well as gatherings at home, hotels across the region serve luxurious iftar buffets incorporating authentic Middle Eastern cuisine like dates, mezze, pickles, olives, roasted meats, tagines and juices. Later in the evening, a second round of food is served in a meal called ‘sohour’. This is also the name for the last meal before sunrise and some eat it as an early breakfast before the first prayer. All through the year muslims pray five times a day, but the prayers just before sunrise and just after sunset during the holy month take on extra significance as daylight fasting begins or ends. Performing ritual prayers five times a day is another pillar of Islam and is called ‘salat’. Many will read the Qur’an more frequently and intently during this time, memorising parts of the text and reciting the muslim profession of faith, called ‘shahada’, more often. Ahead of prayer time, worshippers perform ‘wudu’ or ablution to cleanse faces, hands and feet before presenting themselves to God.

“Ablution is the physical and mental preparation before you step into the conversation with your lord,” explains Kayed. “The prayer is identical every time. All over the world muslims say the same words reflecting the same principle: to be good and recognise blessings.” Another major part of the holy month is ‘zakat’, one of the five pillars of Islam that requires muslims give to the poor and needy during Ramadan. Feeling hunger from fasting is also a fitting reminder of the suffering of others and the need to be charitable towards those in need at this spiritual time of year. “In Ramadan charity counts in every way. You can feed, clothe, or give money. You give from what God has given you,” says Kayed. Visitors are invited to join in the spirit of generosity by donating or giving larger tips to waiters or taxi drivers. A useful phrase to use at this time is ‘Ramadan kareem’ or ‘happy Ramadan’. Once Ramadan and fasting ends, a joyous three-day celebration called Eid al-Fitr takes place. Kayed says: “After breakfast and prayers everyone dresses in new clothes and meets each other, starting with the oldest in the family, and then visiting extended family. “All three days are about spending time with family and having fun together,” adds Kayed. It’s also common, though not obligatory, for families to give gifts especially to children during this special time as muslims around the world come together to mark the end of Ramadan for another year.”

LOOKING TO THE PAST ——— One of Dubai’s oldest quarters, the winding streets of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood offer a captivating glimpse into life in Dubai decades ago

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood is one of those places where the term hidden gem truly applies. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Dubai Creek, this charming district is a world apart from the modern city that emerged from the traditional roots found here. Formerly known as Bastakiya, this district was once home to the pearl merchants and fishermen who carved a living from the waters of the creek.

Carefully preserved to retain much of its original character, the quaint quarter is peppered with some of the region’s finest examples of windtower architecture that defined early Arabic homes. In the warmer months, it’s still a lovely spot to explore with quirky cafés, art galleries and museums dotted along its pathways. Or take in the silhouette of the wind towers from a Dubai Creek cruise as the sun goes down.

A WARM WELCOME ——— Thai hospitality and excellent international fare is a recipe for culinary success at Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort

Located on paradise isle Palm Jumeirah, the distinctive Thai architecture of Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort is the first indication that an eclectic experience awaits. From authentic flavours of the Australian outback to the delicate dishes of Vietnam, Irish chef Maurice Fitzgerald is the at the helm of an impressive gastronomic offering. “I have been in the industry for the last 20 years or so, and have travelled a lot, experiencing different hospitality environments. Based in Dubai for the past 12 years, I joined Anantara Dubai a little over 18 months ago where I am in charge of the culinary department which looks after all the food within the resort,” Fitzgerald says. “My philosophy regarding food is to buy high-quality products and not to complicate the dishes too much. I try to keep things traditional and use seasonal ingredients. The great thing is that the variety of restaurants we have allows me to do that as the food is very different in each one,” he adds. The luxurious resort is home to six dining outlets, each excelling in its own area of expertise. Crescendo is the hotel’s international restaurant where an amazing array of flavours hails from the Middle East, Europe and Asia. Mekong is a charming venue where quirky rickshaw-style seating and stunning exotic interiors are the perfect canvas for the delicious Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese fare. Elsewhere, one of just a few Australian restaurants in the city, Bushman’s Restaurant & Bar has carved out a fantastic reputation for its quality meats, wines and authentic dishes, while The Beach House and Lotus Lounge are both stunning spaces where lighter fare from around the globe is on the menu. With so many different dining concepts under one roof, sourcing quality ingredients and staff is of paramount importance. Fitzgerald says: “The chefs who are in charge of each of the restaurants come from each of the regions of the world we are representing, ensuring that we give an authentic experience. Also, the ingredients that we use come from those regions to ensure you get the real flavours of that particular cuisine. “For example Mekong is an Asian concept so the food items will come from Thailand, China and Vietnam. Our aim is to keep the dishes as original

as possible. As a result, our curries in Mekong are renowned. At Bushman’s, our meats are always complimented as we source the best meats to be found in Australia. We source the majority of our products for the restaurant from Australia, all the way from the bush herbs and spices to the meats.” With such an incredible selection of dishes on offer, it’s no surprise the restaurants are a huge hit on Dubai’s dining scene. Offering his own expert recommendations on menu highlights to try, Fitzgerald says: “I love the beetroot gnocchi at The Beach House Restaurant. It has pumpkin and sage, and is an earthy dish that’s also gluten free, so it fits the bill for many people. “Our Kangaroo dish in Bushman’s is another favourite of mine as it’s such a simple dish, but with many flavours. People love to taste something different with the bush spices and the wok fried bok choy. “The duck curry in Mekong is my favourite from this restaurant as we don’t temper it with spices so it’s as original as you would get anywhere in Thailand.” It’s this commitment to authenticity and quality that sets the restaurants at Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort apart, despite the fact that there is a competitive climate on Dubai’s busy dining scene. “Dubai is always changing and so is its food culture, with over 8,500 restaurants in the city, it’s very much a melting pot as we have so many different nationalities. Having lived here for almost 12 years, I have seen that people follow food trends, which Dubai continues to provide. People still want to have comfort food and the days of eating up to six to nine courses just don’t happen anymore. People are a lot more health conscious and aware of finanical considerations. “At Anantara, we believe in delivering high-quality food at reasonable prices, and ensuring that we create memorable experiences our guests will return for again and again. Looking ahead, there is still a lot more that we would like to develop from a culinary perspective, so stayed tuned and visit this wonderful Thai resort.” —— To book a table at Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort, visit: dubai-palm. anantara.com/dining

SUNSET FEASTS ——— Experience a wonderful blend of cuisine and culture at lavish iftar gatherings across the city

Essentially a period of ref lection, Ramadan is a wonderful time to appreciate the region’s customs, culture and religion. While the days offer peaceful serenity as muslims abstain from eating and drinking, the evening through to the early hours of the morning sees the city come to life as friends and family gather. Taking place at dusk, iftar is the meal during which muslims break their fast, while sohour is the last meal before the fast begins again at sunrise. These long, leisurely feasts of traditional dishes and refreshments are an important part of the holy month and a great way to visit some of Dubai’s best venues and restaurants to experience the renowned Emirati hospitality.

A DAY AT THE MALL Visit myconcierge.com to discover the best shopping spaces in the city

—— STILET TO DREA MS

Level Shoe District at The Dubai Mall is our guilty pleasure. The world’s largest luxury shoe store boasts over 300 designers that cover designer, contemporary and men’s footwear. We love Level Shoe District’s Trend department for its fresh new designs, and always stop by Sole Lounge by Margaret Dabbs to pamper our feet. Aside from Level Shoe District, some of the best names in fashion can be found at The Dubai Mall as well as some of the city’s most popular attractions including Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, while record-breaking Burj Khalifa and The Dubai Fountain are just outside. Open from 10am to 10pm Sunday to Wednesday, 10am to midnight Thursday to Saturday. Visit: myco.ae/dubaimall

There aren’t many malls in the world that boast their own ski slope – that honour goes to Mall of the Emirates in Barsha. We’ve already mastered the slopes at Ski Dubai and have now taken up zorbing in the cool space. To thaw out, enjoy some retail therapy at the mall which boasts more than 560 international brands and a host of exceptional dining options. Open from 10am to 10pm Sunday to Wednesday, 10am to midnight Thursday to Saturday. Visit: myco.ae/moe DESIGNER CHARM

If you’re looking for a more exclusive shopping experience in the city, head to BurJuman mall in Bur Dubai. With its bright airy spaces, attentive staff and a laid back vibe, it’s the best place to pick up a few designer pieces to update your wardrobe. BurJuman is also home to the UAE’s only Saks Fifth Avenue department store with its rails of readyto-wear collections and accessories from international designers such as Carolina Herrera, Missoni, Issey Miyake, Prada and John Galliano. Saturday to Wednesday, 10am to 10am, Thursday, Friday 10am to 11pm. Visit: myco.ae/burjuman

RENAISSANCE FL AIR

Walking through Mercato mall in Jumeirah you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’re in an Italian Renaissance-era town. The colourful shopping mall is full of character with a café-filled piazza in the central atrium and cobbled-style streets. The atmospheric setting is home to more than 140 stores. Open 10am to 10pm, daily. Visit: myco.ae/mercato B Y T H E WAT E R F R O N T

Few shopping destinations can boast as distinctive a location as Dubai Marina Mall. Occupying a stretch of the shimmering Marina waterfront, the mall features a wide selection of high-street fashion brands and high-end watch and jewellery boutiques. Dining options include the al fresco cafés lining the water’s edge. Open from 10am to 10pm Sunday to Wednesday, 10am to midnight Thursday to Saturday. Visit: myco.ae/dmm

Driven by his love of Persian poetry, Iranian artist Abbas Saberi crafts storytelling art at his Swan Palace workshop in Souk Khan Murjan. Combining multiple techniques, he painstakingly creates extraordinary scenes that are embossed, engraved and painted on copper and aluminium sheets. They are then embellished with semi-precious gems. Swan Palace is open from 10am to 10pm Sunday to Wednesday, 10am to midnight Thursday to Saturday. Visit: myco.ae/khanmurjan

If you’re hunting for the perfect gift or a souvenir to take back home, an exquisite piece of Arabic calligraphy is the perfect choice and involves script written in decorative handwriting. We recommend visiting master calligrapher Amir Hossein Golshani’s boutique, Golden Pen, which is located in Souk Khan Murjan at Wafi mall. The boutique boasts an array of charming artwork so you can pick up ready-made pieces or, if you have the time, customise a design as a bespoke reminder of your time in the city. Souk Khan Murjan is open from 10am to 10pm Sunday to Wednesday, 10am to midnight Thursday to Saturday. Visit: myco.ae/khanmurjan PA S H M I N A S AT S O U K M A D I N AT J U M E I R A H

The name pashmina originates from the Persian word meaning ‘made from wool’ and we love shopping for colourful pashmina scarves at Souk Madinat Jumeirah. If you’re nervous about quality and authenticity, this plush modern souk is one of the best places to visit in Dubai. There are a number of retailers here including Al Jaber Gallery and Pride of Kashmir where the staff are knowledgeable when it comes to the quality and craftsmanship of handwoven pieces. Stores open daily from 10am until 11pm. Visit: myco.ae/madinat

Those in search of a true taste of Arabia need look no further than Café Bateel, a charming boutique offering an array of gourmet dates. Café Bateel allows visitors to immerse in local culture by discovering over 20 varieties of sticky, sweet dates, all grown in Saudi Arabia. Each lavish variety is neatly stacked in impressive pyramids behind a glass counter alongside sumptuous chocolate-covered confectionaries. There are several Café Bateel outlets across the city and we recommend you drop by to try their innovative date-infused drinks and selection of desserts with a twist, such as opera cake made with date cream. Pick up preserves including date jam, date balsamic vinegar and date honey along with a signature sparkling date drink as a unique souvenir for friends and family.

—— AL ZAIN

We love Al Zain for its wonderful blend of traditional and contemporary styles. The Bahraini jeweller’s main collections include Natural Pearls, Bridal, Bronze and High Jewellery, while there are also limited-edition pieces available. Natural Pearls is arguably the most striking of the collections, and each piece contains precious Bahraini pearls. The jeweller is steeped in tradition, and has its roots in the pearl trade of the 1930’s. The family-run business has gone from strength to strength since then with stores across the Middle East, and of course, in Dubai with a presence that includes a boutique at Mall of the Emirates.

We love shopping at Damas where you’ll find collections from some of the most prestigious jewellery houses. Whether you’re in the mood for something that sparkles from Graff Diamonds, a heritage feel with an exquisite piece from Fabergé or a Roberto Coin design straight from the red carpet, there is something to suit all tastes. Established in 1907, from the start Damas was known for exceptional craftsmanship. Twenty years after opening its first store in the Gold Souk in 1959, Damas has become one of the region’s biggest jewellery brands. Its network spans 300 stores throughout the Gulf, across Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and of course throughout Dubai.

AHMED SEDDIQI & SONS

RIVOLI

If you’re in the market for a world-class timepiece then look no further than Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons. The family-run firm has been in operation for decades, and has grown from humble beginnings on the banks of Dubai Creek to become one of the biggest purveyors of premium watch brands. As one of the region’s most established and trusted timepiece purveyors, only the most exclusive names can be found here. With boutiques across the city including at The Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates, each boasts an impressive selection including Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Baume & Mercier, A. Lange & Söhne and Breitling.

This is the place to come for premium accessories, from watches and eye wear to leather goods and writing instruments. There are more than 380 stores in the region, and of course plenty peppered across Dubai, meaning there is ample opportunity to pop in and browse the hundreds of international brands under Rivoli’s umbrella. You’ll be spoiled for choice here with an array of must-have pieces from brands such as Omega, Longines, Rado, Gucci, Tissot and Montblanc. For an even more exclusive experience, The R Lounge at The H Hotel Dubai, caters to Rivoli’s VIP clientele with bespoke collections in a plush space.

It’s home to more than 20 international and local galleries. You’ll find us there on September 14 when Alserkal Avenue hosts its season-opening Galleries Night. Open 11am to 6pm Monday to Thursday and Sunday, noon to 4pm Saturday, closed on Friday. Visit: alserkalavenue.ae

Dubai’s newest creative zone, d3, is a purposebuilt development aimed at Dubai’s creative industry. Located near Downtown Dubai, it takes its inspiration from London’s Shoreditch and New York’s Meatpacking District, and while only in its first phase (it opened in 2015), d3 aims to be the epicenter of Dubai’s counterculture. This impressive art hub is already home to an assortment of funky art galleries, boutique stores, pop-up cafes, studios and offices, and recently played host to the Dubai Photo Exhibition and Mario Testino’s Heat showcase, as well as events such as Downtown Design, Sole dxb and Fashion Forward. The first d3 gallery opening was family-owned Sconci Art Gallery, which houses an impressive collection ranging right from the seventeenth century to the modern day. Visit: dubaidesigndistrict.com

PAST MEETS PRESENT We present some of the most interesting and exciting ways to take in the city sights

AERIAL ADVENTURE

—— HISTORIC DISTRICT

The city’s oldest quarter and perhaps its most intriguing, Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood stretches from the banks of Dubai Creek. We love its winding passageways and striking wind-tower architecture. You’ll find an eclectic selection of shops, museums and art spaces here. DUBAI CREEK

DUBAI MUSEUM

Step back in time at Dubai Creek where the city’s story began. The waterway once bustled with traditional boats plying their trade – a scene which continues today. Water taxis known as abras carry passengers across the creek and it’s a wonderful way to take in the space.

One of the oldest buildings in Dubai is the striking Al Fahidi Fort, built in 1799 to defend against attacks from the sea. Today it is the home of Dubai Museum, where you can go on a journey through the emirate’s rich history with engaging displays and prized artefacts. Visit: dubaiculture.gov.ae

One of the best ways to truly appreciate the contrasts of this dynamic city is from the air, which is why we love nothing more than taking to the skies with Helidubai. Hop into one of their luxurious helicopters and take in the sights in style and comfort. For a glimpse of the emirate’s rich past, we suggest the Heritage Tour. Taking off from the waterfront of Dubai Festival City, you’ll hover above the city’s oldest and most charming districts, including Dubai Creek and Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Witness the hustle and bustle of this captivating waterside locale before whizzing past some of Dubai’s most recognisable skyscrapers, lush green golf courses and the gentle lapping waters of the Arabian Gulf. Available for myconcierge members, this memorable tour is priced at AED565 per person, on a sharing basis. Visit: myco.ae/heliheritage

ASK THE CONCIERGE

Mahesh Brid, chief concierge at Towers Rotana shares his recommendations for enjoying Ramadan in the city

1

Ramadan in Dubai is a wonderful time. The city is quieter, more peaceful and it’s a great opportunity to learn more about Emirati culture and local traditions. I recommend visiting Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) which aims to give authentic insights into Ramadan and the customs of the UAE. The centre is housed in the courtyard of a wind tower in Al Fahidi Historical District where, during cultural meals, Emirati hosts will happily answer Ramadan-related questions. Another good way of learning about local culture at this time of year is through food. There is a multitude of iftar offerings all around the city meaning there really is something for everyone. To combine an iftar experience with views of Downtown Dubai, the charming Lakeside Tents at Ewaan Lounge at The Palace Downtown Dubai overlook the incredible Burj Lake and boast a choice of menus for iftar and sohour. Alternatively, diners can try Flavours on Two at Towers Rotana. It offers a hearty iftar buffet with an oriental ambience and seasonal favourites boasting international,

Arabic, Indian, Pakistani and Asian influences. Outwith iftar of course, there is a lively dining scene to explore. For couples looking for a tried and tested experience I’d recommend booking a table at Teatro. After 15 years, the restaurant remains a consistent favourite in Dubai thanks to its diverse offering of cuisines ranging from Japanese and Chinese to Indian and Italian. Even though the high summer temperatures have arrived, there is still plenty to keep the whole family entertained. Many of the malls offer great shopping and entertainment options. The Dubai Mall is one of the best with over 1,200 stores and more than 200 food and beverage options. Children will have a blast at KidZania which has lots of role-playing activities and setups that even include a mock Rotana hotel. Sega Republic and Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo are also great for kids. The aquarium features thousands of aquatic creatures and an impressive glass walk-through tunnel. Elsewhere, Mall of the Emirates is home to Ski Dubai offering fun on the slopes for all ages and regular shows by the resident snow penguins. A fantastic way to tick off several of Dubai’s main attractions is with a Big Bus Tour. You can beat the heat by taking an air-conditioned trip around the city to see famous sights like Burj Al Arab, Burj Khalifa and Dubai Creek. For something more off the beaten track, the Emirates NBD Pearl Museum in Deira is one of the city’s best-kept secrets. Delve into the region’s rich pearling history and view an impressive collection of natural pearls. Then, if you need a little pick me up after a long day, head to Zen the spa at Al Ghurair Rayhaan by Rotana. Designed to promote a sense of tranquillity, there’s a range of massages and body treatments on offer at this serene urban oasis. 3
