July is date-harvest month in the UAE. In the palm groves of Al Ain, clusters of fat, sticky dates weigh down branches, ready to be gathered by hand. Aside from their moreish, toffee-like flavour and high nutritional qualities, dates hold a symbolic value for Muslims as they were often used by the Prophet Mohammed to break his fast during the holy month of Ramadan. As a result, iftar feasts will always include dates so that those who wish to adhere to tradition can follow in the footsteps of the Prophet.

Prayer is one of the five pillars of Islam and must be performed five times a day by practising Muslims. During the holy month of Ramadan the schedule remains the same although the evening prayer is longer as additional passages of the Qur’an are recited. Muslims are required to be clean when handling the Qur’an so before each prayer they must perform a bathing process known as ablution or Wudu. All mosques are equipped with facilities for this procedure such as this beautiful ablution area at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. Visit: szgmc.ae

Iftar and sohour One way in which visitors can immerse themselves in the spirit of Ramadan is to attend one of the iftars or sohours taking place every night at hotels and restaurants across the city. Iftar is the meal taken after sunset when Muslims break the day’s fast, while sohour takes place later on, from around 9pm onwards and is typically a more leisurely affair with shisha and snacks enjoyed over a period of time. For a gourmet iftar experience, head to Emirates Palace hotel, where fivestar Arabian cuisine from Mezlai, the hotel’s Emirati restaurant, in addition to a vast selection of other Arabian delicacies, is served in a palatial Ramadan pavilion. With so much to do and see Novotel Abu Dhabi Al Bustan wanted to provide visitors with a means of quickly and efficiently identifying the attractions that would appeal to them most so we have set up the Middle East’s first virtual concierge system. This allows guests to navigate the city from the hotel and make an informed decision about what they want to explore and experience during their stay. Of course, our concierge team still offers good old-fashioned advice over the desk for those who want it. We’re always happy to guide guests towards the best dining options in the city, such as Argentinian restaurant Chamas at the InterContinental Abu Dhabi – a great option for meat lovers, or Hoi An at the Shangri-la Hotel Qaryat al Beri, which serves delicious Vietnamese fare. Choice Cut, the steakhouse at Novotel Abu Dhabi Al Bustan is another great spot for premium meat while Belgian Bar Café at Novotel Abu Dhabi Gate is the place to go for good French food. Those looking to sample some of the best local cuisine, meanwhile, can book a table at Abdel El Wahab, the excellent Lebanese eaterie at The Collection, located within The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort. When it comes to choosing an itinerary for the day, I would advise all visitors to begin with a tour of the highlights, including the magnificent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the fascinating Heritage Village and the public exhibition at Qasr Al Hosn – the oldest building in the capital and the former seat of power. It’s also well worth paying a visit to Saadiyat Island, home to one of Abu Dhabi’s most beautiful beaches. Later on in the evening, head to Ray’s Bar at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers to enjoy sweeping views of the city in a chic and sophisticated setting.
Once a vital source of goods and income for local towns, the old Arabian souk formed the heart of local communities. Typically, these open-air market places would be held outside cities where travelling caravans and merchants could stop and set up shop, supplying local residents with food, fabric and other products from far afield. Today, contemporary souks around the capital recall these historic markets with traditionalstyle retail environments, such as the Souk at Qaryat al Beri and the Souk at World Trade Centre. Here, visitors can soak up the atmosphere of old Arabia while browsing a mix of boutique fashion and jewellery houses, hole-in-the-wall art galleries and handicraft shops in addition to a number of cafés and restaurants.

D I S C OV E R Qasr al Hosn
Once the ruler’s residence and a former seat of government, Qasr al Hosn is the oldest stone structure in the capital. For a long time, this majestic palace was the only building of any note in Abu Dhabi, with nothing but sand and a straggle of makeshift barasti huts visible nearby. Today, it is tucked back from the busy Corniche, surrounded on all sides by the high-rise office towers, hotels and busy roads of modern Abu Dhabi. A trip here offers visitors an opportunity to delve into the rich history that underpins this rapidly modernising city and a chance to explore one of its most important landmarks. A permanent exhibition, open seven days a week, relays the story of Abu Dhabi and its people through historic photographs that depict a very different way of life to the one UAE residents enjoy today. Discover A good catch
Fishing was one of the oldest means of survival for Abu Dhabi inhabitants who have relied on the fruits of the ocean for centuries. The practice lives on here today as fishermen head out on traditional dhows to cast their nets and haul in the day’s catch. For visitors, a trip to the dhow port by Mina Zayed in the early morning is a great way to tap into local culture and capture some atmospheric shots of the traditional fishing boats as they head out to sea with the modern city skyline in the background.

Symbols of faith Complex patterns and exquisite Arabesque designs paint a beautiful picture of Muslim beliefs in works by Islamic artists across the centuries
The star is a common motif in this part of the world. The familiar symbol features prominently in the art and architecture of the region, visible on the walls, floors and ceilings of Middle Eastern buildings, woven into the carpets, etched into the ornaments and celebrated in paintings. It is one of many shapes that recur in works by Muslim artists who, for centuries, have captured the tenets of their faith in patterns and symbols that represent different threads of Islamic belief. During Ramadan, the religious significance of these shapes becomes more apparent as people dedicate additional time to prayer, pausing to reflect and strengthen their commitment to the core values that underpin their faith.

“Throughout the holy month, visual forms of expression, such as calligraphy or geometric patterning, convey the universal message of peace and harmony that is at the heart of the faith” says HE Hoda Al Khamis-Kanoo, founder of the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation (ADMAF). The eight-point star, known to Muslims as the khatem, encapsulates many of the underlying principles that inform the Islamic understanding of the universe, representing, in its symmetrical design, the order and harmony of creation. As such, the star reappears often, woven into the decorative fabric of the country, visible everywhere once you start to look for it.

Alongside the khatem are various other shapes that recur in Islamic designs. The pentagon, octagon and circle crop up time and time again, piled into complex patterns that, in their repetition, celebrate the infinite nature of Allah and his creation. Islamic teaching emphasises the inimitable perfection of his work. As a result, any effort on the part of man to attempt to enshrine this in a form of his own making is considered, 4

at the very least, futile. This idea of a flawless creator who can’t be mirrored is at the heart of all Islamic belief, reiterated through the rejection of all idolatrous practices. As such, the representation of Allah in figurative form is strictly prohibited, as are depictions of the Prophet Mohammed and his family. Traditionally, the Islamic aversion towards iconography extends to the depiction of all living beings. The artistic rendition of animal form could be seen as an attempt to imitate the creator and, because of this, animals and people feature a lot less prominently than might be expected in works by Muslim artists across the centuries, though different branches of Islam have exhibited varying degrees of compliance towards this principle over time. Instead, Islamic artists have focused on conveying Allah through Arabesque shapes and geometric patterns, often combining the two styles to create beautiful and complex designs. These patterns are acceptable because they honour rather than imitate and there’s no attempt at direct representation. “Islamic art generally comprises stylised lines and designs in highly disciplined forms. It is often woven or inlaid on precious materials that are

decorative as well as useful, though the emphasis is always on celebrating creation,” says Manzoor Kachroo, sales director at Miraj Islamic Art Centre. This does not, however, extend to the portrayal of plant life, which is widely represented in Islamic art. Arabesque, a style widely associated with art of the Islamic world, is characterised by flowing depictions of leafy plants and flowers, though typically there has been little attempt at realism and designs have historically tended towards loose representations of general foliage rather than one flower in particular. Though frowned upon by some schools, most Muslims today find the use of floral motifs in art perfectly acceptable and plantinspired designs have adorned buildings and art works since the earliest days of Islam. One of the most beautiful modernday examples is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, where the distinctive décor is characterised by flamboyant
flowers covering the vast central courtyard and columns surrounding it. The theme is continued inside the building on the walls and carpets of the prayer halls and in the beautiful stained-glass doors and windows. Here the flowers openly depict particular species found around the world. This, in fact, is a key feature of the design, which feeds into the larger ethos behind the mosque – a desire on the part of its founder, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the late President of the UAE, to promote cross-cultural harmony and understanding. As such, flowers from the southern hemisphere are found over the South entrance to the building and Northern-hemisphere botanicals adorn the North face, gesturing towards the cosmopolitan spirit the mosque celebrates. “In many ways, Islamic expression is the embodiment of multi-culturalism as it was built on a foundation made from many civilisations and cultures united in a creative cultural dialogue based on tolerance,”

says Ms K hamis-Kanoo. This universal approach has its roots in the Islamic Golden Age, a time when the proliferation of learning in the east was drawing people from all over the world to the enormous empire being amassed by Muslim leaders. Many of the artistic traditions and techniques that have characterised Middle Eastern art across the centuries hail from this Golden Age of Islam, which fell from the mid-seventh century to the mid-13th century. Drawing on the knowledge of the countries they invaded, the Arab conquerors sought to absorb the learning of their new lands into their own font of knowledge. People came from far afield to participate in the culture of

education that was establishing the Muslim world as the intellectual centre of science, mathematics, philosophy, medicine and other schools of study. Alongside academic spheres, creative pursuits also witnessed a renaissance and Islamic art began to emerge as a field in its own right, characterised by the huge diversity of influences feeding it. This, in part, accounts for the breadth of styles and subjects that fall under the banner of Islamic art today. Calligraphy, painting, glasswork, ceramics and textiles are some, but by no means all, of the mediums that came to the fore during this period and have become areas of focus for Middle

Considered the most superior of the Islamic art forms, calligraphy is visible everywhere across the Muslim world, on buildings, ornaments, clothing and every other surface imaginable. It is as old as Islam itself and revered as the medium through which the Qur’an was set down and given visual form. Over the centuries variations of the inital calligraphic script have emerged and today there are many different styles, some of which resemble intricate patterns more than writing and can only be read by the trained eye 8 8 Arabic calligraphy, ADMAF 9 Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Abu Dhabi 10 Arabic calligraphy 11 Calligraphy workshop with Hassan Massoudy, ADMAF

Eastern artists over the centuries. Today, this multicultural inf luence is evident in works by Muslim artists as they draw on their cultural past to create modern designs. “The techniques and styles of those who lived centuries before us continue to provide a rich source of inspiration for artists living and working today. Both ancient and contemporary expressions of Islamic art must be preserved, nurtured and upheld as we move forward into the future,” Ms Khamis-Kanoo says. This is the role ADMAF performs, acting as both “a guardian of the past and an incubator for contemporary expression.” Ms Khamis-Kanoo cites numerous exhibitions the foundation has hosted over the years that have offered visitors and residents an opportunity to engage with Islamic culture
through the medium of art. Most recently, the foundation has established a partnership with the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts, an organisation run under the patronage of HRH The Prince of Wales, that specialises in teaching, researching and promoting the practice and theory of the world’s great artistic traditions. “Together we have introduced hundreds of young people in the schools and universities of the UAE capital to Islamic art so that they may continue to understand, cherish and safeguard its artistic heritage,” she adds. In Dubai, Mirage Islamic Art Centre is one of several institutions that carries out this role. “Besides being a museum and gallery, Miraj is also an educational institution where people from all over the world learn about the art, culture and heritage of Islam. The centre was set up primarily to showcase art from Islamic-influenced cultures and countries but it also works to support present-day artists and craftsmen who need patronage to sustain their artistic endeavours,” says Kachroo. Support networks like these are at the heart of the UAE’s mission to create a global platform for local and regional artistic talent. As the country develops its reputation on the international art scene, bolstered by the success of home-grown annual art fairs such as Art Dubai and Abu Dhabi Art, the presence of high-profile auction houses, Christie’s and Sotheby’s and the evergrowing number of local galleries opening their doors, interest is growing in the artistic culture and traditions that underpin it all.

So far, this includes the sleek outline of Rosewood Abu Dhabi which is connected by an air-conditioned covered walkway to The Galleria, the capital’s newest shopping destination. The facility boasts 33,000 square metres of retail space, the majority of which is dedicated to designer brands. There are also numerous restaurants, including the capital’s first Zuma, Bentley Bistro & Bar and Magnolia Bakery, among others. These buildings are part of Sowwah Square, the commercial heart of the island. Here, the new Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX building) cuts a distinctive silhouette, a glittering glass edifice raised 30 metres above ground level by four massive stone piers. This is the new nexus of business in the capital and the centre of Abu Dhabi Global Market, the city’s new financial free zone. Connecting all this is a two-tiered road system designed to promote a steady flow of traffic when the central business district accommodates a projected 30,000 people by 2030.
CLEVELAND CLINIC ABU DHABI The multi-speciality hospital will confirm Abu Dhabi’s status as a medical tourism destination for the region. Located next door to Rosewood Abu Dhabi, the vast structure has been set up to provide world-class healthcare for a range of complex and critical requirements, reducing the need for residents to travel abroad for treatment and attracting patients seeking superior care from around the Gulf. One of the best ways for visitors to get under the skin of UAE history and culture is to spend an afternoon at Abu Dhabi Heritage Village. Here, alongside the old-fashioned campfire set-up that offers a fascinating insight into Bedouin ways of life in the desert, is a workshop where local artisans display traditional arts and crafts, including pottery, glass-blowing and weaving
24
CONC_PHOTOESSAY_JUL14.indd 24

Glass-blowing is an ancient art that dates back to the earliest days of the Roman Empire in the first century BCE, though there is evidence that it existed in a crude form even prior to this. The invention of the blowpipe is widely attributed to the Syrians with archaeological evidence that testifies to the creation of glass in this part of the world as far back as 300BCE. Over the centuries, methods have modernised significantly but visitors to Abu Dhabi Heritage Village can still see the historic Middle Eastern practise of glass-blowing performed in a traditional manner by local artisans

Weaving has been practised for generations in the UAE, where once-limited resources meant that local women had to make use of every material available. Palm leaves and fronds, animal skins and rudimentary textiles were woven into all manner of items from roofs for houses to clothing and containers. The Sougha initivative has been set up with a view to preserving these skills and providing women from poorer towns in the UAE with employment
26

Sougha translates into English as a 'traveller's gift' and visitors are invited to explore the beautiful collection of handmade items at the initiative's shop in the Souk at World Trade Centre, Abu Dhabi. The vivid designs and brilliant colours recall those used in the tents and floor cushions of nomadic tribes in the Arabian Peninsula. In this way, each piece gestures towards the stories of the past while helping to pave the way for the future with the bulk of the profit handed over to the artisans and the rest set aside for training each new generation of weavers. THE BEEHIVE WORKSHOP
Tucked away in a pretty villa in the backstreets of Jumeirah, Dubai, this enterprise was founded by Mashghal Al Khaliya with a view to providing an opportunity for local women to develop new skills and put them to use in a social and educational environment. Around 100 women of all ages attend or teach classes in dress-making, weaving, painting and a variety of other artistic and creative pursuits. The fruits of their labour are then put on display in rooms around the house and can be seen by appointment. Another room is filled with intriguing historical artefacts, each of which tells a story about UAE culture and tradition
The idea behind this enterprise was to create a female-only environment where women can come to use their time productively while enjoying the company of friends."Instead of focusing on acquiring material possessions and spending money at the mall, they can gain a sense of fulfilment by learning and later teaching the skills we foster here and embracing the spirit of learning we cultivate," Al Khaliya says. CALLIGRAPHY
The beautiful swirling script that characterises decorative Arabic text is centuries old with early examples found in cave paintings that date back as far as 2,000BCE. Since the dawn of Islam, calligraphy has played an important role, not least because it was used to document the Holy Qur'an
30

18/06/2014 09:31
Today, the ancient art form is visible everywhere across the UAE, from the walls of mosques to the logos of corporate companies and works by modern artists. There are around 20 different types of Islamic calligraphy in total, though not all of these are in regular use. Learning to read these elegant scripts can take years and aspiring calligraphers must dedicate much time and patience before mastering this beautiful art. Majid Alyousef and Amir Hussein Golshani (pictured) are Dubai-based calligraphers who have spent years perfecting their expertise and often produce bespoke pieces incorporating special messages, which make ideal souvenirs or gifts from the UAE

A noble legacy The UAE’s inspirational leaders have helped build a proud history and strong foundations for a bright future WORDS BY
MELISSA SLEIMAN
The world over, the United Arab Emirates is a nation much admired for its innovative spirit and limitless vision. A place where architectural heights are reached and ambitious investments green-lighted as daring projects are realised. Throughout the country’s extraordinary journey, from a collection of desert settlements to dynamic global destination, its leaders have shown the way with sights fixed firmly on the future and a singular determination to succeed. Recent strides further forward, spearheaded by the country’s leadership, are set to propel the UAE to even greater status on the world stage. The capital’s Abu Dhabi 2030: Urban Structure Framework Plan is widely acknowledged as a masterpiece of urban planning. A marriage of the spectacular and practical, the strategy takes into account sustainability issues and historical reverence. By 2030, it will enable Abu Dhabi to triple its population to an incredible three million residents. Stellar success is also anticipated in Dubai as plans progress to stage Dubai Expo 2020. A raft of bold projects for the event, across all facets of life in the UAE, are set to further transform the nation’s landscape. This winning spirit is rooted in the ambition and determination of the UAE’s ruling families. The country’s growth trajectory has been breathtaking since oil started to flow in the early 1960s, but it could easily have gone off the rails without a distinct plan. Fortunately for the UAE, the oil bonanza hit during the time of HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The ruler of Abu Dhabi in 1966, he was integral to the unification of the emirates, which commenced in earnest from 1971 when the British-Trucial Sheikdoms treaty expired on December 1. A union was forged between Abu Dhabi and Dubai and, on December 2, the constitution was written and other emirates entered the fold. The father of the UAE had well and truly arrived, with Sheikh Zayed elected by his fellow rulers as the first President of the UAE – a post to which he was successively re-elected at five-year intervals until his death in 2004.

Born in 1918 in Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zayed held vivid memories of the UAE as an economy built on fishing and pearl diving. Through the late 1920s and 1930s, Sheikh Zayed’s thirst for knowledge took him into the desert with Bedouin tribesmen to learn all he could about their way of life. He later recalled with pleasure his experiences of desert life and his initiation into the sport of falconry, which became a lifelong passion and a formative influence on his philosophy and governing methods. One foundation of his philosophy as a leader and statesman was that the resources of the country should be fully used for the benefit of the people, including the women of the UAE who thrived within his inclusive vision on education, employment and equality.

2
In governing the nation, Sheikh Zayed drew from Bedouin traditions of consensus and consultation. At an informal level, that principle has long been practised through the institution of the majlis (council) where a leading member of society holds an ‘openhouse’ discussion forum, at which any individual may put forward views for discussion and consideration. “Sheikh Zayed had a great vision of what he wanted the country to become,” explains Peter Hellyer, a writer, columnist and historian who specialises in the UAE’s past and present and currently serves as the director of research for the UAE Federal Government’s National Media Council.
3
“He understood the deprivation of the years before oil because he grew up in those and he understood that there was a need for revenues from oil to be used for the benefit of the people. That was the focus of his time as ruler and president. At the same time, he was aware of issues such as sustainability. You could see that in his approach to wildlife conservation and environmental conservation. From his own experience he knew if you overfished or overhunted you depleted resources and some resources cannot be replaced – once they are gone they are gone. He had the same attitude to the development of the oil industry. He ensured that production, although rising, was done in accordance with the right techniques and at the right pace. “If you’re going to build for the future, you don’t want to remove the resources that can enable that to happen. “It means you have to protect some things and you have to do some things slower because you have to focus on the long term. It’s a long climb to the plateau, so you need a long steady approach,” adds Hellyer. Such was Sheikh Zayed’s commitment to the UAE’s natural heritage – celebrating and preserving both flora and fauna – that he became the first head of state to receive the World Wildlife Fund’s Gold Panda award. Another defining feature of his leadership was his desire to support international peacekeeping efforts, including supporting efforts in Lebanon and Somalia, as well as being one of the first world leaders to express support for the decision by the North Atlantic Treaty

Organisation (NATO) to launch its aerial campaign to force Serbia to halt its genocidal activities against the people of Kosovo. His focus was also on relief and rehabilitation, with organisations like the Zayed Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, established by Sheikh Zayed before the foundation of the UAE and the Red Crescent Society lending support across the world in times of need. Today, the UAE’s leadership continues along the path forged by Sheikh Zayed, with HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, continuing to take important strides forward. Building on an undoubtedly strong legacy, with subtle, appropriate adaptations to the times, the UAE has continued to flourish along sustainable lines. “Everybody knew Sheikh Khalifa,” says Hellyer. “He had proved himself as Crown Prince and had worked closely with Sheikh Zayed, so it was a smooth transition. The UAE has been lucky to have that. You sometimes see all sorts of uncertainties appearing but that didn’t happen. He has continued the good work, driving an innovative desire to diversify, to use new technology and to work as a partner for development on a global level. Abu Dhabi wants to be a part of that. It has the money to invest to be part of that. It also has people with the vision of where and how Abu Dhabi and the nation will proceed and succeed.” Further seamless leadership transitions seem inevitable. In recent years much of the day-to-day running of state affairs have been assigned to his half-brother, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown 7

Prince of Abu Dhabi. Sheikh Mohammed, who is also Deputy Supreme Commander of the National Armed Forces and Chairman of the Executive Council of Abu Dhabi, is now very much a diplomatic figurehead of Abu Dhabi and the UAE. In February, he received US Secretary of State John Kerry and heir to the British throne Prince Charles on official visits. Acting as a driving force behind Abu Dhabi’s rapid industrialisation and infrastructure growth, there is likely to be a big push to further diversify the emirate’s oil export, enshrined in Abu Dhabi’s Economic Vision 2030 set out more than four years ago. Its core aim is to boost the manufacturing sector’s contribution to the emirate’s GDP to 19 percent by 2020 and 24 percent by 2030. Dubai also benefited from powerful leadership, with HH Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Emir of Dubai, ruling for 32 years until his death in 1990. Though Dubai had oil, he was acutely aware that it was a finite resource. “My grandfather rode a camel, my father rode a camel, I drive a Mercedes, my son drives a Land Rover, his son will drive a Land Rover, but his son will ride a camel,” he famously said and was determined to ensure Dubai had what it took to survive once the oil was gone. To this end, he was the driving force behind such crucial infrastructure projects as Port Rashid, Jebel Ali Port, Dubai World Trade Centre and Dubai Drydocks. “For Abu Dhabi, diversification is a matter of choice,” says Hellyer. “For Dubai, it is a matter of absolute necessity. I remember when Sheikh Rashid announced he was going to build the world’s largest manmade port. It was way out in the

desert, but he’d assessed the situation, knew what he was doing and it was a success. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is building on what his father started.” From manmade marvel Palm Jumeirah and the world’s tallest tower Burj Khalifa to recent success with the Dubai Expo 2020 win, there is much to celebrate and inspire. Looking to the future for Dubai and the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed’s ambition was affirmed in his stirring statement last year after the emirate was confirmed host of World Expo 2020. “We renew our promise to astonish the world in 2020,” he said. “Dubai will bring to life our vision: Connecting Minds, Creating the Future. Our goal is to build a better future for the region’s youth. The UAE will achieve it through collaboration and inspiration at the event. Dubai Expo 2020 will breathe new life into the ancient role of the Middle East as a melting pot for cultures and creativity.”

Moving with the times The tale of timepiece creator Frederique Constant is chronicled in a beautiful coffee-table book that charts a homegrown success story
Seizing every spare moment between busy days in the world of business, a young couple work late into the night to bring a vision to life. The idea is a simple one, to create beautifully detailed Swiss watches for a new era. Self-taught using manuals, the latest software and advice from sources in the watchmaking industry, Peter and Aletta Stas gradually built a company to stand the test of time. Frederique Constant now produces hundreds of thousands of watches each year for a growing customer base in countries all over the world. Live Your Passion – Building a Watch Manufacture is the first book to document the Frederique Constant journey, paying tribute to the many talented people behind the brand.

“My wife and I started the company 25 years ago. We have a passion for watches and the idea was to make them beautiful and accessible. We were, in fact, producing a watch for ourselves,” says Peter Stas, Frederique Constant CEO. “In the beginning, my wife was working for an insurance company and I was with an electronics firm. As a result, we made our first prototypes in the evenings, at weekends and during vacations. It may all sound very nice now, but I still remember well that out of our six original prototypes, only three worked.

Some of them were literally glued together. We had only very limited means and some of the prototypes were intended simply to show the client what the watch was going to look like. Others showed the movement and the function but it was really very early days. “This early stage took years because we only had part-time hours available. We visited suppliers in Switzerland and learned a lot from them. They gave us instruction manuals for different components and technical manuals on how a watch should be built. We had long discussions with Swiss friends in the industry who helped us, but we were really self-taught. In the early 1990s, the couple took their six prototype designs to a luxury fair and returned with an order for 300 pieces, giving birth to their first collection. “It took us about a year to produce that first order but, during that time, we learned a lot about production. Two years later, we visited another fair to show our latest prototypes and the number of orders we received jumped to 1,100 pieces. That’s when it started to become more serious and from there, we have steadily grown step by step,” says Stas. A name for the f ledgling company was chosen; an amalgamation of names in tribute

to the couple’s great-grandparents, Frederique Schreiner and Constant Stas. “The business started as a family activity and it’s important to note that my wife and I are still 95 percent shareholders. It’s very much a family company with a family feel. We try as much as possible to maintain that family culture. “That is what the book is all about. It describes the journey from the early days. Just like the company at the start, the book was also a bit of a part-time, evening project.

The journalists working with us helped, of course, but Aletta and I were the ones who actually wrote it. Some of the stories, we had already written over several years. We selected the interviews, choose the photographs together and worked for around a year-anda-half before it was complete,” explains Stas. Published last autumn, the artful volume is available to purchase in Frederique Constant boutiques and online. It is filled with interviews from all areas of the business and from the many craftsmen and women who ensure the company remains a success. Stas says: “The intention was to focus on the whole manufacture and importantly, the people. We included interviews with employees so that they could give their perspectives. Our products are made by hand, by people and the book shows something of the people behind the product. “It’s a very modern manufacture, located in Plan-les-Ouates in Geneva and because we built it ourselves in 2004, it has been set up very logically. There’s a lot of light and it is humming with young watchmakers who we recruit straight out of watchmaking school. We bring in young people and train them because they are fresh, ambitious, passionate and very willing to learn. It is a young culture but also efficient, practical and open.” The watchmaker’s core collection revolves around five key timepiece styles. The sleek Manufacture line boasts its own in-house created calibre while elegant mechanical watches make up the Ladies Automatic series. Classics offers an exceptional selection of some of the finest pieces from across the brand’s

history while Runabout and Vintage Rally pay tribute to gentlemen’s sports boats of the 1920s and major international classic car events, respectively. The firm showcased the best of these collections alongside innovative new pieces at the Baselworld 2014 watch and jewellery show, which took place in Switzerland earlier this year. Stas explains: “At this year’s Baselworld, we featured 35 new watches divided over our core collections. A very important highlight was the 10-year anniversary of the Manufacture, which produced its first watches in 2004. The 10-year Manufacture comes with a high-end

There are only five other brands using silicium assortment parts.” With a view to expansion in the Middle East and Dubai, in particular, the firm plans continued partnership with luxury distributor Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons. Stas says: “Last year our sales grew 20 percent in Dubai and, of course, we are very happy with our collaboration with Seddiqi. With our partners, we want to develop in the region.” Looking to the future, Stas says: “We want to continue to grow, to emphasise our in-house calibres, increase awareness of Frederique Constant around the world and in doing so, build on the legacy we have created so far.” Available from Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons boutiques in the UAE, visit seddiqi.com

Visitors shopping for luxury goods in Abu Dhabi step into a world of bespoke experiences where the customer is king WORDS BY
FAY E BA R T L E
Abu Dhabi’s luxury shopping credentials are growing apace. First there was Avenue at Etihad Towers, Abu Dhabi’s first standalone high-end luxury shopping destination. The mall, which opened in November 2012, presents an impressive selection of luxury brands from A. Lange & Söhne to Van Cleef & Arpels which, at the time, was a revelation for residents and visitors alike. Next came Al Maryah Island’s new boutique shopping mall, The Galleria, which opened in August 2013 bringing 100 high-end brands onto the scene including a number of debuts such as Boucheron, Jimmy Choo, Marc Jacobs and Mulberry. As well as providing fresh access to the latest premium fashion and accessories, both of these malls stay a step ahead of the game by offering bespoke retail experiences that are sure to impress even the most seasoned international shoppers.

One of the latest additions to the luxury shopping landscape, Al Manara International Jewellery’s multi-brand boutique at The Galleria, is a case in point. Claiming over 340 square metres of retail space, the shop showcases more than 17 of the world’s most sought-after Swiss watch brands including Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, SLYDE by HD3 and Ulysse Nardin, to name just a few. What’s special about the space, however, is the shop-in-shop concept that gives customers a chance to immerse themselves in different brand environments, with private seating areas inside each mini boutique, as well as a strategically located VIP seating area to ensure discretion for top spenders. General manager Wajdi Abdel Hadi explains: “The motivation for the project was to be able to offer people a heightened shopping experience that cannot be found elsewhere in the emirate. stages, we looked to examples of best practice around the world and, coupled with anecdotal research carried out with luxury consumers here in Abu Dhabi, we were able to hit upon the perfect formula. It took us three months to design the concept, including everything from the layout to the look and feel. “We know shoppers in this region like their privacy. They like to feel comfortable, not too rushed and to be able to relax in a space where they cannot be overlooked by others,” he continues. “The shop-in-shop concept at The Galleria store is open but sheltered at the same time. The layout gives people freedom to roam, ensuring a stressfree experience, while the VIP room is there for those who require complete privacy.”

The Abu Dhabi-based company’s forwardthinking vision stems from its original objectives when established in 1973 and, later, its acquisition by Ahmed Sediqqi & Sons in 2012 in a joint venture with the Hassan Abdulla Mohammed Group, which revamped its prospects. As Hadi explains, the company spotted a gap in the market where the brands available were falling short of customer expectations. “We wanted to build our distribution network quickly and bring our proposition in line with international standards,” says Hadi. “We now operate 14 stores in six locations in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain – each of which reflects the luxurious image we have been keen to cultivate from the start. When we heard about plans to build The Galleria, we knew the development would be a cornerstone of luxury shopping in Abu Dhabi, which is what led us to opening a flagship store there and we are extremely happy with the result. “Looking at the bigger picture, the Abu Dhabi government has a vision to establish the emirate as a business and tourism hub with global events, cultural attractions and hotel development playing a key part.
“This dynamism creates an ideal environment for growth with increasing numbers of visitors from Europe, China and Russia which, in turn, fuels the retail sector. Coupled with Dubai’s Expo 2020 win, we have no doubt that Abu Dhabi will experience a ‘halo’ effect. When it comes to retail, we cannot afford to blink for fear of missing an opportunity to grow. We are the number one watch and jewellery distributor in the capital and we will do everything in our power to defend that position going forward.” Currently, Al Manara International Jewellery carries more than 25 brands ranging in price from luxury to ultra-high end, including watches, handcrafted jewellery, leather goods and mobile phones. When it comes to acquiring new names, however, Hadi says that his team is always searching for something unique to add to the carefully constructed selection. With future plans to open a boutique in Abu Dhabi’s Yas Mall in the autumn and a second wave of expansion in the pipeline that will keep the brand busy until 2018, all eyes are on what Al Manara International Jewellery will unveil next.

Those who want to hone their skills a little before tackling the track alone can enrol at Yas Racing School, which offers a multitude of tutored driving experiences in a variety of vehicles including the Aston Martin GT4, Formula Yas 3000, Chevrolet Camaro and Yas Radical SST models. Driving the Formula Yas 3000 is the dream for most F1 enthusiasts, while fans of movies such as The Fast and The Furious – the seventh edition of which was recently filmed in the capital – will relish activities such as drag racing or drifting in one of Yas Drift School’s custom-made Toyota

GT 86 vehicles. It’s not necessary to possess Vin Diesel’s skill at the wheel to have a go – a full valid driving licence will suffice and instructors are on hand to ensure that the environment remains safe and controlled at all times. Yas Racing School also offers private lessons for those looking to perfect the art of speed-driving on the track or go one step further and take the FIA Assessment Racing Licence Course to become a qualified racing driver in less than one day. Flow boarding Home to the largest sheet wave surfing facility in the world, Bubble’s Barrel, Yas Waterworld is the ideal destination for some al fresco fun this summer. Each second, the ride’s powerful 1,250-horsepower pumps push out 7,000 litres of water to create a continuous three-metre high wave that presents an enticing challenge to flow boarders and surfers. Beginners can work up to the barrel on the smaller Rush Rider – a similar ride that offers an ideal practise environment – and pick up tips by watching the experts as they perform daring stunts and tricks. Flow boarding is relatively new to the region and Yas Waterworld has taken on the role of nurturing the sport here. The UAE now has its own team, trained by flow-boarding champion Clayton Barker at the water park, which represents the country at competitions around the world. The facility has also invited other teams to the UAE while playing host to international events, such as the sixth Annual Oakley Go Pro World Flow Boarding Championships, which took place at Yas Waterworld in October 2013. Visitors who want to try out this exhilarating sport can follow in the wake of pros every day throughout the summer. The bonus of the wave facilities based within the water park is that there are over 40 additional rides at the complex to keep adventure seekers cool and entertained long after their turn is over.

Wake boarding Wake boarders in the UAE have access to some of the region’s best manmade facilities to practise their sport. Al Forsan International Sports Resort Water Sports Centre is home to the Middle East’s first water cable-park system, where up to 13 riders can take part at any one time. Rather than relying on a speed boat, the system tows wake boarders along on purpose-built lakes, affording an ideal environment in which to learn or practise. The resort features both a ‘pro’ and ‘beginner’ lake to suit all skill levels and the cable that transports participants can be adapted to travel between 29 and 38 kilometres per hour to suit the experience and confidence of each boarder. In fact, the park is so successful that the World Wakeboarding Association (WWA) called it “one of the most amazing cable facilities in the world”. Other sports supported by the cable system include wake skating, knee boarding, mono skiing and water skiing. Where: Al Forsan International Sports 4

For the ultimate chill-out sporting experience, hit the ice at the Zayed Sports City Ice Rink. At 30 by 60 metres, the facility is Abu Dhabi’s only Olympic-sized skating surface, making it the premier place in which to strap on some skates and take part in a little ice hockey, ringette, figure skating or just a spin around the ice. Figure skating is a growing sport in the UAE, following the success of Emirati skater Zahra Lari. Lari trains at Zayed Sports City Ice Rink and this year became the first figure skater to officially represent the UAE in competition as a member of the International Skating
Union (ISU). Whether an aspiring Winter Olympian, like Lari, or a beginner, Zayed Sports City Ice Rink offers a range of lessons and coaching programmes to suit all skill levels and ages across a number of ice-based sports, in addition to recreational sessions for those who wish to skate at their own pace. Meanwhile, a busy calendar of ice hockey matches and figure-skating shows provides plenty to keep spectators entertained from the sidelines. Where: Zayed Sports City Ice Rink Contact: 02 4034333

EXPERIENCE
A place to...
Indulge the senses Surrender body and mind to an afternoon of pure pampering in the hands of expert therapists at Anantara Spa
NEW THIS MONTH With summer approaching, the spa has launched two new therapies designed to combat the heat and counteract the effects of humidity: The Freshskin Facial is designed to restore radiance to the complexion, focusing on unblocking congested pores and rebalancing the skin. Skin Clear Facials’ emphasis here is on skin prone to breakouts and excess oil. A deep-cleansing routine tackles the problem at its root to restore a healthy balance and shine-free surface.
The spa is at the heart of the Anantara experience and no trip to one of the brand’s beautiful properties would be complete without one of its signature pampering sessions. This is especially the case at Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara where the therapies have been carefully designed to respond to the needs of both local and international clientele. The Arabian Dynasty package is the perfect way for visitors to let go of their everyday lives and immerse themselves in the local mindset. The experience begins with a hydrating hair masque and a session in the Royal Turkish Hammam, to cleanse and soften the skin before nourishing it with Rose Bliss Balm by local brand Shiffa during a 60-minute massage. The treatment also includes an Elemis facial, allowing visitors to emerge feeling cleansed and pampered from top to toe. Those that want to share the experience with a friend or partner can book one of several treatments designed specifically with couples in mind, including the 90-minute Couple’s Bliss therapy, which includes a massage tailored to suit individual requirements followed by a deeply relaxing Elemis facial conducted by the spa’s knowledgeable therapists. The final touch is a cup of spicy ginger tea that reawakens the body and invigorates the mind leaving a pleasantly refreshed and energised sensation in its wake.

Where possible, Emirates Palace executive chef Sandro Gamba sources his produce locally. Yasa Caviar, a new brand produced right here in Abu Dhabi, has recently replaced imported caviars in dishes at Emirates Palace restaurants. “From a chef’s perspective, it is always ideal to use local produce because we’re sure of the quality first hand. Also, we can ask Yasa to create bespoke caviar especially for the hotel,” Gamba says. Contact: 02 6907999

Culinary customs With its melting pot of cuisines and international restaurant scene, Abu Dhabi is the ideal place to explore the world’s culinary traditions
Food is never really just food. For many cultures, the rituals of eating have become so far entrenched that most diners are hardly aware of the processes they are carrying out. Cutlery is held one way and soup is consumed another because that’s how it’s always been done. Moreover, to do it any other way would be impolite. However, sit down for dinner on another continent and it’s very possible that these long-established culinary convictions will be swept away in the face of an entirely different set of standards. A European eating out for the first time in China or Japan will likely encounter conventions that directly contradict perceived notions of polite dining in the west, such as the habit of slurping food noisily to demonstrate appreciation and complement the chef. Similarly, Indians might wince at the sight of other diners using their left ‘unclean’ hand to consume food, while in the west it is considered rude to eat with the hands at all. Indeed, formal meals in Europe and America often require diners to navigate their way through several sets of cutlery, each relating to a different course with its own distinct use. Embracing these different dining practices is all part of the fun when it comes to trying foreign foods and, with the spread of many popular cuisines overseas, certain customs have been absorbed into the global culinary consciousness. Chopsticks, for example, are now used in restaurants and households across the western world to consume Asian cuisine while the concept of à la carte fine dining, a time-honoured practice in the west, has recently begun to infiltrate restaurant communities in China.

The Arab world has its own set of dining practices and visitors to Abu Dhabi have ample opportunity to explore these at restaurants around the capital. Here, particularly within Lebanese and Persian cuisines, the sharing concept prevails and the idea is to order a selection of mezze dishes to the table for everyone to dip into. Arabian dining, however, is just one of a great many culinary adventures that await visitors in Abu Dhabi, where the rapidly expanding restaurant scene is transforming the city into an epicurean capital for the region. “Abu Dhabi is undoubtedly a fantastic place to explore culinary traditions from across the world,” says Gavin Gleeson, head chef at Monte-Carlo Beach Club, Saadiyat. “The dining scene is exciting, diverse and multicultural, much like the city itself and boasts a wide variety of cuisines and restaurants. “It’s also full of people from all over the globe, meaning that restaurants aren’t manned by locals recreating recipes they’ve read in cook books but by Indian, Italian, Thai and other chefs who are passionate about their roots and have moved to Abu Dhabi to share their own culinary traditions.” Gleeson, who is himself Irish, presides over the club’s numerous dining outlets, including Le Deck. The restaurant emphasises seasonal produce and serves classic Mediterranean cuisine with a nod to local Arabian fare. “With an increasingly international clientele, we are keen to please all palates and frequently experiment with new flavour combinations as we look to add a modern twist to established
recipes. We maintain guests’ interest by keeping their favourite dishes on the menu while introducing new and interesting creations for them to try if they feel like it,” he explains. The capital’s diverse culinary culture is complemented by the curiosity of its diners who are, according to Sandro Gamba, executive chef at Emirates Palace, very adventurous when it comes to trying new flavours. “This city has a thriving visitor market and attracts people from all over the world. We are all drawn here for different reasons but the love of food is universal. The different culinary styles available in our restaurants offer a taste of home for some and a new epicurean adventure for others,” he

explains, adding that, though much younger than other gastronomic centres around the world such as Paris and New York, he believes Abu Dhabi has the potential to emerge as the region’s culinary capital. Within Emirates Palace alone there are 14 separate dining concepts and Gamba successfully overseas a team of 161 chefs. “From Mezlai, which highlights traditional Emirati food as well as modern adaptations of traditional dishes, to Mezzaluna, which focuses on authentic Italian cuisine, each restaurant represents different culinary customs from around the world, though they share the common theme of excellence. As the ultimate luxury hotel in Abu Dhabi, the overarching concept in all our restaurants is exceptional food with exceptional service.” High standards are something that Abu Dhabi diners have come to expect and new restaurants need to make a strong impression early on if they are to survive in this sink-orswim market. One way of achieving this is by bringing a new concept or cuisine to the community, something that is still possible in the capital, where, though expanding rapidly, the dining scene is still in its infancy. As Gamba says: “Abu Dhabi has some more growing to do in terms of developing its dining options. I would give it another five years before diners can sample every cuisine style from across the world in this city.” While some new restaurants have failed to live up to the demands of Abu Dhabi diners,

and perished quickly as a consequence, others succeed from the start and maintain a regular flow of clients thanks to a strong concept underpinned by excellent service and a distinctive take on dining. One such institution is Chamas Churrascaria and Bar at InterContinental Abu Dhabi. The restaurant was the first to bring the churrascaria concept over from Brazil, introducing it to the capital seven years ago to instant acclaim. “We actually went to Brazil and spent time in kitchens over there, learning all about the tradition of churrascaria, which in Portuguese means ‘the place where meat is cooked’. Then we brought professional passadores (the meat-servers) back with us and they trained our staff on the ground,” explains Danny Kattar, executive chef at InterContinental Abu Dhabi. “Since the beginning, we have stayed true to the tradition of churrascaria, which is to keep it simple and serve the very best cuts of meat available,” he adds. After helping themselves to the salad bar and ordering a selection of sides, diners are presented with an ongoing service of meat, which is brought round on huge skewers and carved into bite-sized morsels at the table by the passadores. There are 15 types of meat to try in total and guests can have as much as they wish before indicating that they are finished by turning the green side of their coloured card over to display the red face.

“Abu Dhabians are often well-travelled with a passion for trying new trends and that’s one of the reasons why Chamas has been so successful,” Kattar continues. A more recent addition to the scene is Zuma, which opened its doors earlier this year. The trendy eaterie, which places a contemporary spin on the traditional Japanese izakaya dining style, has already proved itself in neighbouring Dubai and owners are confident it will be met with the same enthusiasm from diners here. “As the capital, Abu Dhabi plays an important role in hosting people from around the world and catering to the many different culinary demands they bring. In addition to international visitors, the local Arab community is developing a sophisticated understanding and taste for culinary styles from around the world,” a spokesperson from the restaurant says. Asian food is extremely well represented in Abu Dhabi with a wide choice of Oriental-style

concepts and cuisines. Pachaylen at Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa serves what executive sous chef Idin Asmitha describes as “palate-pleasing Thai culture cuisine” while Benjarong at Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi focuses on providing traditional royal Thai cuisine in a classic environment that features modern and antique touches. The emphasis here is on providing diners with an authentic Thai experience, from the customary ‘wai’ (Thai bow) greeting on arrival to the calm ambience created by the interior and, of course, the food. “We have noticed a great interest among Abu Dhabi residents and visitors in Thai food, so we aim to provide them with a taste of the real thing,” explains executive chef Andrea Gerometta. Alluding to the extensive growth that Abu Dhabi’s culinary scene has undergone in recent years, he explains that diners now have very high expectations with regards to “authenticity, originality, consistent quality and sheer culinary finesse”. Part of Abu Dhabi’s power lies in its location at the crossroads between east and west. The city has not only become home to a multicultural resident society but also witnesses a high turnover of visitors from all corners of the world. People come in and out of the capital every day, bringing different culinary inf luences with them and expressing new demands for those products and services that are not yet represented here. The dining scene is quick to respond as competition increases and established local restaurants up their game to vie with international competitors for custom, serving ever more interesting and original dishes to an increasingly cosmopolitan and well-travelled clientele.

Sunset suppers After the sun goes down, diners across Abu Dhabi gather to attend the nightly iftar and sohour feasts
The holy month of Ramadan is the ideal time to become better acquainted with Islamic culture and there are few better ways to do this than by joining iftar or sohour. These lavish feasts take place every evening at hotels across the city and offer an insight into the culinary and cultural traditions that underpin this important religious occasion. Throughout the holy month, Muslims fast during daylight hours and will not eat or drink until sunset, when the iftar bell tolls. This evening repast is an opportunity for friends and families to come together and break their daily fast; traditionally with a fresh date followed by an Arabic buffet. Many restaurants across the capital put together dedicated iftar menus while some hotels erect special Ramadan tents each year. These highly decorated air-conditioned havens are the setting for glorious feasts throughout the holy month and offer a relaxing space in which to enjoy a hearty meal followed by a game of backgammon or a round at cards. Later on in the evening, many establishments will also host sohour. Traditionally the final meal consumed by Muslims before bed, this is the last opportunity to fill up with enough food and water to get through the day. Concierge takes a look at some of the best culinary experiences taking place at hotels across the city this month.

Dhow spotting For centuries, traditional wooden boats known as dhows were relied upon to keep the UAE's bustling trading ports and markets afloat. Nowadays, waterways such as Dubai Creek and Abu Dhabi's Mina Zayed Port are key points to spot the remaining ships still in use gliding majestically on the water. Such spots are great reminders of days gone and of the deep-rooted traditions that reaffirm the country's long-lasting connection to the sea.

Now, the city is preparing to host a second stop-over at the end of 2014 and will once again field its own team, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing. The UAE capital is not new to water-based racing. The country has become a major force in powerboat racing and regularly unveils a top-class team to compete in the UIM Formula 1 World Championship which climaxes in front of thousands of spectators at the Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club by the Breakwater.

IN THE KNOW: RAMADAN There is no eating, drinking or smoking allowed in public places during the fasting hours (daylight) and particular respect must be shown towards all religious rules. Opening hours of many hotels and restaurants across the city change for the duration of Ramadan and a small number of establishments may remain closed for the duration of the holy month, so it is advisable to call ahead.
BILL PLEASE As a general rule, all hotels will add a 10 percent charge to restaurant bills in addition to the six percent fee levied by the government. Most menus state whether these taxes have already been incorporated or not but check with the waiter if it is unclear.

EMIRATES PALACE The iconic palace stands in pride of place at the tip of the Abu Dhabi Corniche and embodies the luxury lifestyle the capital has cultivated. Until recently the most expensive hotel ever to be built, the impressive structure is richly adorned with precious materials. 12 different shades of marble can be spotted in the cavernous atrium, while the central dome holds dual records as both the largest in the world and the greatest gilded expanse ever created in one building.

SHEIKH ZAYED GRAND MOSQUE Built by the late Sheikh Zayed to help build a bridge between faiths and create greater cross-cultural understanding, the Grand Mosque is a must-see for any visitor to Abu Dhabi. The third-largest mosque in the world, this majestic structure is wrought from over 1,000 columns and 82 domes embellished with semi-precious stones, gold and marble. Inside, the spectacle is equally impressive with glittering chandeliers, spectacular floral motifs adorning the walls and a vast hand-woven Persian carpet in the main prayer hall.

My life in Abu Dhabi Zayan Ghandour, co-founder and creative director of s*uce, shares her city highlights

I moved to the UAE when I got married over 10 years ago. When I first came to the Emirates everything was still developing but I could see that it was on the brink of great and wonderful things. It’s so inspiring to be part of the country’s growth and development and to be able to be part of that story. I love the energy in the UAE and, of course, the all-year-round sunshine. My favourite time of year is October to April when the weather is gorgeous and is perfect for spending time outdoors. I love parks, so whether we are spending the weekend in Abu Dhabi or Dubai, devoting time to visiting the park with my daughters is a must. And let’s not forget about ice cream; Baskin Robbins’ Love Potion is our favourite. In the evenings I love to dine out. My favourite restaurants are Eight at Souk Qaryat Al Beri, Shangri-La Hotel, where my dish of choice is the Pain Perdu, Vasco’s at Hilton Abu Dhabi which serves the best curly fries in the world and Café Blanc at Eastern Mangroves Promenade where
chefs offer an exceptionally delicious take on Batata Harra. When it comes to shopping, Abu Dhabi’s Marina Mall remains my favourite because it has the best mix of brands and, of course, the must-visit has to be my boutique s*uce! Abu Dhabi Art, held every November, is one of the important events on the social calendar and everyone f locks to the capital to see what’s in store. When I have friends and family out to stay I always recommend they visit Emirates Palace, the many attractions on Yas Island and the stunning hotels on Saadiyat Island. I also advise visitors to take a trip to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque because it’s a gorgeous feat of architecture and an absolutely beautiful interpretation of the UAE’s cultural heritage. The UAE is a place of endless opportunities, where entrepreneurship is encouraged and new businesses are supported so being here has been tremendous in helping my career. I don’t know if I would have ended up on the same path had I been somewhere else.
