ENGINEERED FOR MEN WHO HEAR A CALL FROM THE WILD.
Aquatimer Deep Three. Ref. 3557: There are times when all it takes to hear the call of the wild is a glance at your wrist. With the water-resistant Deep Three in its titanium case, it’s immediately clear that your next job will be in another latitude and, more significantly, somewhere below the surface of the ocean. The mechanical depth gauge, which shows current dive depth to a maximum of 50 metres, and the newly developed IWC SafeDive system are your companions as you push your limits downward. And for
your ascent, you can calculate the necessary decompression stops using three parameters: actual dive time, maximum depth attained and the seconds hand. At the same time, you have a complete backup system for your dive computer. In short: this watch puts you in control of any subaquatic adventure you might undertake. But even without a wet suit, the Deep Three and its elaborate diving helmet relief engraving on the case back make it eloquently clear what your I WC . The new Montblanc Extreme Collection of leather accessories is a reflection of true craftsmanship. Boasting sleek and functional designs, the Extreme collection blends signature Montblanc leather manufacturing processes that have been in use since 1926 with new techniques that have resulted in creating high-performance leather which is resistant to water, heat and small abrasions. In contrast to this strong outer leather, the insides of the passport holder, business card holder and wallet are lined with soft black Italian natural cow-hide. Larger leather products from the Extreme collection including briefcases, messenger and clutch bags are all detailed with the same soft leather, while larger compartments are lined with synthetic rubber to provide electronic devices such as laptops with extra cushioning. Abu Dhabi has a special flair about it. It’s a beautiful city with a lot of hidden gems and all the visitors who come to the capital for the first time fall in love with it. The vast greenery and cleanliness of the city is admired and the well-organised and affordable transportation network makes it easy to get around. Also, the wide selection of restaurants, entertainment facilities and shopping malls offers visitors plenty of choice. The concierge team is in contact with our guests from the minute they make their booking. I advise them on what clothing to bring to suit the weather and offer cultural tips that they need to know to respect our culture here in the UAE. I also give them tips on sightseeing tours and places they can visit. The first attraction I recommend is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. I also advise them to visit Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi’s Heritage Village and check out events that take place in the city. During the cooler months, I recommend guests spend the day on the beach or visit the desert for dune driving. If they are interested in shopping, I suggest visiting The Souk at Central Market where they can pick up some nice souvenirs. In the evening, visitors can enjoy the sea breeze at the InterContinental Marina where they have a choice of dining options. The Yacht Club presents delicious cocktails and Asian tapas, Chamas Churrascaria & Bar offers 15 different cuts of meat served Churrascaria-style, while Belgian Café serves excellent pots of mussels and chunky fries. Fishmarket is also worth a visit to experience all kinds of seafood in a wonderful marketplace setting.

A tale of two cities Exciting developments in Abu Dhabi and Dubai usher in a new chapter in the UAE’s success story WORDS BY
CATHERINE LANGLEY
For over two thousand years, the Gulf coast has been known as a gateway to the rest of the world. From the fifth century when the Persian Royal Road served as a crossroads of communication, to the trading posts of the 19 th century, people have always converged here. However, despite its central location, the United Arab Emirates, as it became known following independence from the British in 1971, was considered a relative backwater as recently as 20 years ago. Today, following extensive reinvention plans in the two main cities, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the UAE is now a hub of breathtaking development. The former pearling and fishing villages are popular international destinations but, despite their shared history and simultaneous expansion programmes, these two buzzing metropolises have taken very different paths. Abu Dhabi has adopted a more cultural approach, establishing itself as an international centre for the arts as well as an emerging centre for business and leisure, while Dubai is one of the world’s most popular visitor destinations and has become an ultra-modern melting pot of jaw-dropping manmade attractions and world-class events. Here, Concierge looks at this tale of two very different UAE cities.

Capital plans Change is afoot in Abu Dhabi. Having long been overshadowed by its glitzier neighbour, Dubai, the UAE’s capital is coming into its own, emerging as the Middle Eastern hub for the arts. With year-round exhibitions and major international art venues planned, Abu Dhabi is determined to make itself a world-class cultural destination, channelling the likes of London, New York and Paris as inspiration. “The Government of Abu Dhabi is going forward with big, art-related projects,” says Ahmed Saleh Al Yafei, founder of Abu Dhabi Art Hub, a live-work space for artists that hosts art programmes and provides studio space for art-related companies to occupy. “In the coming years, this will put Abu Dhabi on the map in the art world,” he adds. Al Yafei is, of course, referring to ambitious plans announced in 2007 to build a museum complex, Saadiyat Cultural District, on Saadiyat Island off the coast of the city. This surge of interest in art is nothing new in the UAE, as Dubai has boasted an art fair, Art Dubai, for several years now and global auction house Christie’s opened its own office in the city in 2005. However, the difference is that Abu Dhabi has managed
SHARJAH: CITY OF HISTORY

While Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the two best-known emirates, Sharjah, the third largest city in the UAE and a historical hot spot, boasts a multitude of attractions for the more intrepid of visitors. A range of museums are on offer, including the Sharjah Science Museum, the Sharjah Archaeology Museum and the Sharjah Natural History Museum. Sharjah Heritage Area near the city’s main corniche is also a must for culture aficionados. Here you’ll find Al Hisn Fort, the former residence of Sharjah’s ruling family and a masterpiece of old Arabic architecture, as well as the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation. Meanwhile, for retail therapy, head to The Blue Souk, which houses more than 600 shops that sell everything from electrical goods to traditional jewellery and antique artefacts.

to attract world-famous galleries and the city’s iconic Saadiyat Cultural District will host branches of The Louvre, scheduled to open in 2015 and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, due to open its doors in 2017. It will also be the base for the highly anticipated Zayed National Museum in 2016. Louvre Abu Dhabi is already accumulating its own permanent collection with other exhibits on loan from French museums including the Musée du Louvre, Musée d’Orsay and Centre Pompidou, while Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is set to display a varied selection of global art, as well as
playing host to educational programmes with a particular focus on Middle Eastern contemporary art. The Zayed National Museum has a local theme with seven permanent gallery displays inspired by the long history, heritage and culture of the UAE. The Saadiyat Cultural District has quickly become the epicentre of Abu Dhabi’s expanding art and culture. Once finished, the high-profile museum projects will be an important boost to the city’s name, creating a cultural attraction unmatched in the region and with few rivals anywhere else in the world. 4

Dare to dream Anyone who has ever so much as searched for Dubai online will be aware of the city’s record-breaking developments from Burj Khalifa – the world’s tallest building – to The Dubai Mall, the largest shopping mall on the planet. Lively, diverse and filled with record-breaking achievements, it certainly is the flashiest of the seven cities that make up the UAE and, unless you’re a hardened sceptic, it’s hard not to be impressed. In a little over four decades, Dubai has become
5
one of the world’s most modern, innovative and technological cities, attracting investors and workers from over 200 countries. This rapid rise has been reflected in the city’s recent successful bid to host the Dubai Expo 2020. While news of the successful bid was announced with typical Dubai fanfare – fireworks erupting from the side of Burj Khalifa and public holidays declared for all – what the expo actually means for the city is a little bit more difficult to define. Most analysts believe it will boost the city’s already thriving tourism industry, which currently boasts a handsome 11 million visitors a year, as well as reinvigorating other areas of the economy, such as real estate. “The impact on travel and tourism will be significant,” says Kinda Chebib, research analyst for Euromonitor in London. “Dubai Expo 2020 is expected to attract more than 25 million visitors, 70 percent of whom will be travelling to the city to attend; the largest number of international visitors ever reached through an expo.”

While Dubai Expo 2020 doesn’t quite have the kudos of the Olympics or the FIFA World Cup, there’s no denying that the sixmonth-long exhibition of trade, innovation and products from around the world will certainly put the global spotlight back on Dubai, further reinforcing its position as the Middle East’s business and tourism hub. Added to this, an impressive citywide expansion project, estimated at more than US$8 billion, is currently underway. The mammoth 120 hectare Safari Park in Al Warqa will open to the public next year and house more than 1,000 animals, while plans are also on track to build the Dubai Wetland Centre that will include a museum and visitor centre in the existing Ras Al Khor Sanctuary. Another remarkable project is the Mini World Park that will include Dubai icons such as the Burj Khalifa and the Burj Al Arab and expected to the be largest park of its kind in the world. Ultimately, the end goal is to create a lasting tourism legacy that the UAE will benefit from for many years to come.

Abu Dhabi presents a rich kaleidoscope of contrasts that blends the country's past with a grand vision for its future. An architectural marvel in the UAE capital, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque stands tall amidst a backdrop of towering skyscrapers, while traditional dhows offer a glimpse of the past as they sail across the pristine blue waters of Abu Dhabi. Built in 1891, the historic Al Jahili Fort in the emirate's second city of Al Ain is a cultural highlight. After carefully restoring the fort, it today houses a permanent exhibition on Sir Wilfred Thesiger's journey across the Rub al Khali (The Empty Quarter) desert, preserving past memories for generations to come

Standing at the crossroads of east and west the UAE occupies a unique position and, as such, is an incredibly diverse destination. From the burnt orange hues of the majestic dunes to the golden arcs of pristine coastline that surround both city and desert, this is a nation of extraordinary contrasts. The story of the emirates' development is one defined by boundless vision and a pioneering spirit that have seen humble fishing villages transformed and futuristic cities rise from the sand

With each passing year, Dubai grows ever more varied and vibrant. From an eclectic selection of innovative architecture to a thriving arts and social scene, the city is steadily growing into one of the world's most exciting destinations. At its heart is Dubai Creek, an enduring symbol of the historic roots which are very much a part of the city's future. Here, fishing and dhow-trading days gone by are recalled as traditional boats ply their trade along the creek's waters. Wind tower architecture of the old quarter, Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, lines the banks and offers visitors a glimpse of Dubai down the decades. Look back across the water and the city's modern skyline provides a stark contrast. The world's tallest building Burj Khalifa towers over a host of modern marvels which have come to define any present notion of the city

A fine weave Steeped in history, the craft of Persian carpet-making has inspired generations of connoisseurs with its artistry.
Persian carpets have long been deemed a status symbol, indicative of their owner’s wealth and sophistication. While their exact origins remain largely unknown, 20th century discoveries have unearthed treasures and with them folklore that is galvanising a new desire for these inspired works of art. Art lovers, from royalty to business leaders, have invested millions in rare Persian carpets, the finest examples of which now adorn museums and palaces the world over. The purpose of the beautiful pieces may vary, from functional as a floor covering, to purely aesthetic as a spectacular wall hanging or piece of art, but the creative process behind them has remained largely unchanged for millennia. Concierge delves into the history of Persian carpet-making and discovers a true art form.

Laying the foundations Research suggests carpet weaving in the Middle East is about 2,500 years old and while different styles have emerged over the years, its methodology has remained the same. Many handmade carpets and rugs use sought-after Kush wool and cotton. Occasionally silk and even camel hair are incorporated, ensuring they’re made to last. They are renowned for their vivid colours because artisans have cultivated and applied years’ old dyeing processes to textiles using organic roots, flora, barks, animal products, insects and plants. However, the actual process of creating the intricate designs is even more elaborate and requires serious dexterity. Using varying knotting techniques such as Sinneh from Persia and Pakistan or Ghiordes from Azerbaijan and Turkey, these finely knotted carpets can vary in complexity from anywhere between 70 to 500 knots per square inch and are usually priced on their density.
Carpets are one of the most fundamental examples of Islamic art and creations from Iran have been highly-prized by connoisseurs for centuries. Renowned for their vibrant colours and artistic patterns, Persian carpets boast the highest standards of quality. Persian wanderers may have perfected the art of the knotted carpet before 500BCE but the practice only gained popularity during the reign of the Safavid dynasty from the 15th century that many consider to be the beginning of modern Persian history. Two of the best examples of carpets from the Safavid period are from the mosque of Ardabil and the larger of the two carpets is today housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, while the other is displayed at the Los Angeles County Museum.

Back to the future Believed to be the world’s oldest recorded knotted rug, The Pazyryk, was discovered in 1949 preserved in the tombs of the High Altai region of Siberia and was carbon-dated

back to the sixth century, opening an intriguing historical window into the little-known nomadic tribes of the era. Now housed at St Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum, this pile rug’s origin is still widely debated but is thought to be rooted in the Middle East. Persians perfected the art of knotted carpets over centuries and today an outstanding example of the hand-woven technique graces the main prayer hall of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. The brainchild of artist Dr Ali Khaliqi, the mosque’s awe-inspiring carpet, believed to be the largest in the world at 5,700 square metres and containing 2.2 billion knots, was custommade from 30 tons of wool. Hand-sown by 1,200 weavers employed by the Iran Carpet Company at three workshops in the province of North Khorasan, the commission took approximately 21 months from concept to completion and cost in the region of AED30 million. It was flown to Abu Dhabi in three aircrafts and hand stitched on site making it one of the most ambitious handmade projects in living memory and a breathtaking focal point of the mosque.
Persian persuasion When choosing a Persian carpet, it’s often a case of man versus machine, making it tricky for a carpet novice to recognise true art. Fortunately, for visitors to Abu Dhabi

looking to purchase an authentic Persian carpet as a reminder of their trip, there are several reputable carpet dealers selling the real deal. They include the Centre of Original Iranian Carpets (COIC), established in the UAE capital by expert Dawood Hosseinzadeh in 1977 and part of a family business that dates back to the early 1900s. “Our Abu Dhabi showroom is spread over three floors and home to more than 5,000 pieces. It boasts one of the largest selections of Persian carpets in the UAE,” says Hosseinzadeh, adding: “All of the carpets are imported from Iran and are made in some of the country’s most famous workshops.” Renowned for its exclusive Persian rugs, COIC has sourced carpets for the royal families of Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, but its most frequent customers include UAE nationals, ex-pats and increasingly, leisure and business tourists visiting Abu Dhabi. “The UAE is the best place to buy a Persian carpet outside of Iran because there is no tax or VAT and Abu Dhabi’s close proximity to Iran makes importing easy,” says Hosseinzadeh. Another reputable carpet dealer is the Persian Carpet House (PCH), established in the UAE in 1979 by the Al Shareif family and, today, one of the Middle East’s largest retailers of handmade carpets. The company, which has three branches in Abu Dhabi, deals directly with elite Persian rug families including: Zabihi and Jamshidi in Qom;

There are three types of Persian rugs – city-, village- and tribal-made, Hosseinzadeh explains. “City-made rugs are the best in terms of perfection. They have a high knot count of more than 490,000 knots per square
4
metre. A near perfect example reaches more than one million knots per square metre.” Other important factors to consider is the fact that Persian carpets not only have the most knots per square metre, they have the smallest knots and are thinner than other carpets available in the market. Real Iranian pieces will also have minor imperfections in the design, which is important, because that is what makes them unique. Patterns on the front of a rug will be mirrored on the back, while each knot is entirely separate. Contrary to popular belief, the knot density is the least pertinent of four main factors that differentiate the quality of a Persian carpet. “The most important factor is the design and the intricacy of the pattern, followed by colour and the durability of the dye, then the grade of the silk or the wool and lastly, the knot density,” confirms Hosseinzadeh. Fine Persian carpets can last a long time and serious buyers and collectors hand them down to future generations. “There is an expression in Farsi which says that three things become more valuable with age: a Persian carpet, good wine and friendship,” says Hosseinzadeh. Persian carpets are likely to become even more valuable in years to come as their production becomes more limited. “Sadly, there is a gloomy future for this craftsmanship and we are gradually losing weavers. It’s a dying art,” Hosseinzadeh explains. “Buy a Persian carpet today and it could be worth a fortune in the future.”

Al Ain A plethora of cultural and historical sites are waiting to be explored in Abu Dhabi’s second-largest city
MINI BREAK With so much to see, visitors can extend trips with overnight stays at one of Al Ain’s top hotels. In the heart of the city and close to all the key attractions lie five-star properties Al Ain Rotana (03 7545111) and Danat Al Ain Resort (03 7046000). Both boast a wealth of restaurant and spa options between them. Elsewhere, in the business, shopping and entertainment district, Ayla Hotel (03 7610111) offers a luxury stay in stylish settings and has recently opened an excellent rooftop lounge, Sky 5. A short drive up Hafeet Mountain, Mercure Grand Hotel Jebel Hafeet (03 7838888) offers unbeatable views over the city.
Situated an hour’s drive from the capital, the city of Al Ain is steeped in history. Originally home to the Bani Yas tribe who first settled here before moving to the coast in the late 1700s, Al Ain has played an important part in the birth of the country. The city’s key attraction, Al Jahili Fort, was once the summer residence of the UAE’s ruling Al Nahyan family. Now, it stands as a reminder of times past and visitors can enter the restored structure to explore exhibitions about the country’s rich history. In areas surrounding the fort, archaeologists have unearthed a wealth of artefacts from early settlers, offering great insight into the transition of cultures in the region. As such, in 2011, the area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Such findings can be discovered at Hili Archaeological Park, the Hili tombs and Al Ain National Museum. Al Ain is set in the shadow of Jebel Hafeet. At 1,240 metres, the mountain is the second-highest peak in the UAE and the winding road to the summit makes for an excellent drive with even more impressive views once you reach the top. Back down at the foot of the mountain is one of the city’s most popular attractions: Al Ain Zoo, which is home to around 190 species and more than 4,000 animals.

Thomas Pink Thomas Pink is an established heritage brand with an authority on shirting. Created in London in 1984 by three Irish brothers, the brand was named after Mr Pink, the famed 18th century London tailor who designed the scarlet red hunting coat worn by British huntsmen; a look that remains instantly recognisable among fox hunters today. Carrying Mr Pink’s legacy across the globe, the company now boasts more than 100 stores worldwide that stock ready-towear pieces and offer the famed tailormade White Shirt Bar and Personally Pink madeto-order services.

Thomas Pink unveiled its first standalone outlet in Abu Dhabi at The Galleria last year. Its wares – largely comprising luxury shirts and ties – are quintessentially British and the store concept reflects this. The 1,216-square-foot boutique is bold yet sophisticated. Rich limed-oak panelling contrasts with stainless steel fixtures. Wooden shelving displays the brand’s multicoloured ranges of formal and informal shirts, while wooden units tempt customers with deluxe accessories such as pocket squares and cuff links. Underfoot lies a herringbone floor of polished black granite accented with a narrow band of tiling in the signature Thomas Pink colour, bringing out the shades that are then accentuated by the natural light flooding in from a large window overlooking the mall’s waterfront. Look closer and figurines of Thomas Pink’s Cheeky Fox emblem pop up around the boutique and hints of British pride are prominent via cleverly placed books about London, miniature London cabs and Union Jack-print chairs and accessories. Once inside, customers could well feel as though they’re in Thomas Pink’s flagship boutique on London’s Jermyn Street, far from the modern extravagance of The Galleria.

Diane von Furstenberg is known for her collections that combine playful sophistication with remarkably modern femininity. The quirky designer’s store concepts are similar the world over and the 2,152-squarefoot store at The Galleria, the brand’s first in Abu Dhabi, offers a novel update to this model. Setting foot inside, the store’s identity is clear. With an initial colour palette of black, white and pink, Furstenberg’s personality spills out via iconic artwork and dramatic wall coverings that play off the monochrome gallery-like interior. Lip motifs decorate whitewashed walls, reflecting the Salvador Dalí lip sofa which is a highlight of the designer’s work space in New York’s Meatpacking District, while black steel features highly, providing a beautiful contrast with the painted walls. Steel-framed display boxes and shelves exhibit the hottest accessory offerings, while hanging rails present a rainbow of new-season ready-to-wear pieces.

Mannequins in the centre of the store show off the latest styles of the brand’s famous wrap dress, hanging scarves add a flash of colour and a 3D gold wall display breaks the colour code to present sunglasses in a unique manner. In the accessories lounge, a pink carpet provides a comfortable surface on which to try on footwear, while in the ready-to-wear section, sofas in the identical pink shade lie atop a monochrome leopard carpet; a print synonymous with the brand. From the power-woman illustrations on the walls to the luscious pink drapery of the fitting rooms, the Diane von Furstenberg shopping experience is, from start to finish, a celebration of femininity and glamour.

Loud, provocative and highly creative, Moschino founder Franc Moschino was known for injecting a little humour into fashion, but at a high-quality level. The fashion house’s newest UAE boutique at The Galleria is both eclectic and enchanting. Never a brand to play by the rules, chequered flooring is reversed and appears on the ceiling, while mirrors create the illusion of infinite space. The opulent fabrics of new season ready-to-wear collections hang from seemingly endless rows of colour-coordinated railings. Golden fixtures and shelving reflect the Moschino emblem that sparkle from carefully arranged accessories and, in the window, a large gold bird cage encases the display, adding a further touch of magic to the concept. Coach More than 70 years since its launch in a loft in the Big Apple, Coach continues to ooze sophisticated New York style wherever in the world it’s found. Maintaining this classic yet modern tone in its boutiques across the world is so important to the luxury accessories company that it formed its own firm, Coach Architecture Group, to design all its store concepts. In late 2013, the second Abu Dhabi boutique opening unveiled an innovative dual gender design. While the male and female areas sharing the 2,034-squarefoot space have completely different styles, including separate entrances, both sections maintain the brand’s distinctive qualities. In good hands At the Jaeger-LeCoultre Manufacture in the heart of the Swiss mountains, master watchmakers are hard at work crafting extraordinary moments
Inside the Jaeger-LeCoultre Manufacture, an entire wall is dedicated to the amazing accomplishments that have come from its artisans since its doors opened. Each piece on display is more innovative than the last and the wall of calibres, as it is known, is intended to inspire the creative teams within the Manufacture, spurring them on to even greater watchmaking heights. This is a place where innovation is found at every turn and where watchmakers have in some cases dedicated their entire working lives to the intricate craft and to preserving the legacy of a company which was founded by one passionate artisan toiling in his workshop more than 180 years ago. “Inside the Manufacture, people are very proud of the products – that is something you can feel,” says Daniel Riedo, CEO, Jaeger-LeCoultre. “There is no compromise on quality. There are 180 skills present and for that reason we open the doors regularly receiving 3,000 visitors every year. It is important for us to share the passion of all the watchmakers and employees. We are an integrated operation and that means we produce everything. Our artisans stay with us and progress inside the Manufacture, from the very simple movements to the complicated pieces. Our focus is very much on developing our people.”

The luxury Swiss watch brand’s reputation for innovation means there is a steady supply of watchmakers keen to join the Manufacture. Riedo says: “There are many ways in which we find our artisans. Some come to us because we are very well-known but, we also take people from school and they learn a lot inside the Manufacture. “We have one person whose previous job was as a lumberjack. He cut down trees in the forest and now he sets very small stones. He was interested in working with us so we gave him some tests and employed him. Since then, we have developed his skills and now he works in the artisan field, having come from the forest. I believe, with artistic work, that there is no real school for it. In the end, there is only people.” He adds: “Some have worked with us for a long time. One watchmaker is about to leave after 49 years. He started at the age of 15 and is retiring just before he turns 65. We have another retired watchmaker who is 75 years old and has been with the company since he left school. He still works for the research and development department a few days a week, even though he has been retired for 15 years.” A commitment to artisanal roots is at the heart of the Jaeger-LeCoultre story. Founder Antoine LeCoultre studied metallurgy in his family’s forge with his father where he invented new alloys. A gifted inventor, he created the Millionometer in 1844, which was the first instrument able to measure the

“We have to think about the connection between mentor and protegé and the ways in which we can transmit knowledge from generation to generation” micron – one-millionth of a metre or onethousandth of a millimetre. In 1847, LeCoultre’s pivoting winding device was the first system for winding the watch and setting its time without the use of a key. A succession of firsts followed as did hundreds of global patents. In 1888, seven years after the death of Antoine LeCoultre, records show his son Elie carried on the pioneering work with around 500 watchmakers and technicians. From the 1890s onwards the Manufacture began producing a series of Grandes Complications – incredibly intricate timepieces that were to become a hallmark. In 1903, French watchmaker Edmond Jaeger joined forces with Antoine’s grandson Jacques-David LeCoultre and a world-famous partnership was born. The pair collaborated on one of the first collections of ultra-thin watches that included the thinnest watch in the world. Building on the decades of success that followed, the JaegerLeCoultre brand was formed in 1937. Just as early expertise was handed down from generation to generation within the company, talent is still carefully nurtured within the Manufacture. Based in the Swiss Vallée de Joux, an expert team of 1,800 people works within its walls where more than 1,200 different calibres and over 400 patents have been filed since the brand’s beginning. A host of legendary timepieces have made their mark on the watchmaking industry including the Reverso, Duoplan, Memovox and Atmos clock, while the Calibre 101 in 1929 remains the world’s smallest mechanical watch movement.
3
“It is great for the younger watchmakers coming through and part of their education. We try to transmit from one generation to another. It is more complicated today than it was in the past as we have more people and we have developed the Manufacture dramatically in the past five years. We have to think about the connection between mentor and protegé and the ways in which we can transmit knowledge from generation to generation,” says Riedo. He adds: “We have the wall of calibres which displays only half of what we have produced over the years but is a fantastic place to find inspiration. There are more than 120 people working just on the development of new ideas. Often I am asked about the most difficult part of the creative process and my answer is that the greatest challenge is to reduce the number of ideas as there are so many that it is difficult to select one and not another.”

With each year that passes, the innovations continue and, since 2000, the Manufacture has created 75 new calibres, including grand complications, tourbillons, minute repeaters, chronographs and perpetual calendars. Earlier this year the impressive Master Ultra Thin Minute Repeater Flying Tourbillon watch was launched, the 11th in the Hybris Mechanica collection and the first ultra-thin grand complication model. One of the slimmest minute repeaters in its category, at just 7.9 milimetres, the piece is based on eight separate patents, six of which are entirely new. Hybris Mechanica 11 is equipped with an original tourbillon, high-performance new
6
balance-spring and automatic winding system as well as a new minute repeater. “As the first minute repeater to be ultraslim, it is something really astonishing and is a milestone in the development of high complications. It is very wearable but also has high-end complications because of our capacity to produce ultra-slim components for high-end pieces. This idea is at the heart of the Hybris Mechanica collection,” says Riedo. He continues: “We also have the Hybris Artistica, a unique collection of just 12 models at the high-end in terms of the artistic developments that we are capable of. These two pillars are the pinnacle of mechanical and artistic creativity within our business.” The collections are supported by some of the brand’s most iconic lines, such as the Atmos and Reverso, which are continually updated and reinvented in special editions. First presented in 1928, the prototype of the Atmos clock caused a stir among the world’s media as it appeared to achieve perpetual motion. Drawing its energy from the smallest changes in temperature, a one-degree fluctuation is enough to drive it for two days, while the clock consumes 60 million times less energy than a 15-watt electric light bulb.

Its stunning design means it is as impressive today as it was 85 years ago and a number of special editions in recent years have ensured its continued popularity. Meanwhile, 1931 marked the birth of the Reverso watch. During a trip to India a distributor of Jaeger-LeCoultre was challenged by polo enthusiasts to create a watch capable of withstanding hard knocks sustained during the game. The idea heralded the birth of the Reverso, which in one quick motion sees the case swivel in its carrier to protect the watch glass as the back of the dial is instead turned to face outwards. “The Reverso was developed in 1931 for polo play, to protect the glass itself during the game. Now this idea has evolved into watches for ladies, two time zones, plus an opportunity to personalise the watch with engraving. There is almost no limit to the imagination. That is part of the creativity of what we love to show to customers and, for that reason, Reverso is a very big icon of the brand.” Looking to the future, Riedo says: “This is a great place to expand in the UAE and in the wider Middle East region, but it’s not expansion for expansion sake. It’s a qualitative expansion. For sure, there is potential here. “We hope to continue to grow as a company and to continue to foster the direct connection we have with our customers. That is something we are very focused on. We have so much to offer with the Manufacture and the passion that can be felt there; that is something we want to share with others. We have great movements and watches but it is very important to us that people come to understand something more of the dream of the watch itself.”

Shop around From designer collections and leading luxury jewellery brands to local fashion houses and Emirati handicrafts, Abu Dhabi’s well-stocked retail scene offers a wealth of opportunity to shoppers
When it comes to retail therapy, Abu Dhabi is a shoppers’ dream. International luxury labels abound in the malls, offering access to the latest designer collections from the catwalks in Paris, Milan, London and beyond. Then there are the home-grown fashion boutiques where beautiful garments crafted by talented local designers are artfully displayed alongside jewels and accessories from across the region. Abu Dhabi is also a centre for fine jewellery and, alongside the major international brands, visitors will find countless local suppliers, particularly in the gold souk, where craftsmen design bespoke pieces to order. Other local markets specialise in different wares, such as the Carpet Souk, which sells hundreds of beautiful Persian designs and the Al Mina Fruit and Vegetable Souk, equally worth visiting for the cultural experience as for the fresh produce found there. Some of the modern markets, including the Souk at World Trade Centre Abu Dhabi and the Souk at Qaryat Al Beri are great options for those looking to buy souvenirs and feature stores packed with local handicrafts and trinkets from around the region. There is also a thriving art scene here and a growing network of local and regional artists whose works are on sale in galleries around the city. To help visitors make the most of the capital’s excellent retail offerings, Concierge has compiled a guide to shopping in Abu Dhabi.

Shopping for souvenirs is a great way to explore Emirati culture and experience a more historical side to the capital. Uncover the country’s heritage by browsing wares such as Arabian coffee pots, a symbol of local hospitality deeply rooted in UAE tradition. Prayer beads, ghutra headscarves and beautifully bound Qur’ans may also appeal to those looking to investigate Middle Eastern culture. There is a number of places that stock such items. The Souk at Central Market is one of Abu Dhabi’s modern markets and offers more than 250 stores offering a span of goods and sevices that includes quaint antique shops, jewellery stalls, tailors and numerous eateries while the Souk at Qaryat Al Beri features a wide range of outlets from crafts and jewellery stores to galleries and fashion boutiques.

Efforts are underway to revive some of the capital’s more traditional retail offerings and preserve the handicrafts that were once vital to its people’s fortunes. Sougha, meaning ‘a traveller’s gift’ in Arabic, is one such initiative. Established to reignite interest in the art of weaving among Emirati women, the organisation sells handmade products, including brightly-coloured bags, tapestries, pillowcases, bracelets and even phone covers through its store in the Souk at World Trade Centre. Looking further afield, Abu Dhabi is ideally placed to provide goods from around the region, including luxury Persian carpets from the Carpet Souk, which offers designs from Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, China and Asia. The most expensive are the handmade silk carpets from Iran. Many outlets will organise international shipping, so visitors concerned about luggage restrictions are free to purchase all they please.
the shopping centre, where skilled craftsmen work within a broad spectrum of designs from delicate pendants to ornate 24-carat-gold collars dripping with diamonds and pearls. Gold here is priced according to the daily rate and the souk is frequented by couples looking to have dream designs realised at market prices, without paying for big-brand names. Those who prefer major brands will find them all in Abu Dhabi’s malls. Cartier, Tiffany & Co. and Chopard are situated alongside the major watch companies, including Breguet and IWC Schaffhausen, among others. Many have also opened standalone boutiques in the capital’s luxury malls, including The Galleria and Avenue at Etihad Towers, while 3

Jewellery is a big part of Arab culture and wealthier families will exchange lavish gem sets to mark milestones such as weddings and anniversaries. In the UAE, many women tend to opt for statement accessories, adorning themselves with elaborate pieces, many of them custom-made for special occasions. A great place in which to tap into this tradition is the Madinat Zayed Gold Centre within

others are available through leading regional jewellers such as Damas, Pure Gold, Rivoli and Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons.
Works of art November brings Abu Dhabi Art back to the capital and with it visiting artists from across the Middle East, who will be exhibiting and selling their work during the four-day event which runs from November 5 to 8 at Saadiyat Cultural District. Outside the art fair, visitors looking to buy works by local or regional artists can explore some of the city’s galleries. Ghaf Art Gallery was the first contemporary independent gallery in Abu Dhabi and is known for hosting impressive exhibitions that uncover emerging artists, while Etihad Gallery is the heart of the antique art scene and features a showroom packed with traditional Arabian
artefacts. There’s a modern art gallery under the same ownership next door. Other galleries well worth visiting include Salwa Zeidan Gallery, Barakat Gallery, Hemisphere Design Studio & Gallery and Gallery One.
Luxury experience Visitors looking to stock their wardrobes with the latest designs will find no end of opportunity in the UAE capital. Valet parking and smart restaurants contribute to the high-end retail experience offered by malls such as The Galleria and Avenue at Etihad Towers, which are dedicated to luxury brands. Stores at these venues will often produce exclusive models designed for the local market that are not available anywhere else. Another shopping centre that has only recently opened its

As the Middle East’s premier shopping destination, it’s not surprising to find that the UAE is home to many up-and-coming fashion designers. One woman making a name for herself across the region is Sumayyah Al Suwaidi, the mastermind behind couture fashion label SEEN, who creates one-off dresses and abayas that win praise for their creative and bold designs. Another Al Suwaidi making waves is Emirati fashion pioneer Abeer Al Suwaidi, best known for her luxurious abayas. Mauzan, created by Rafia Helal bin Drai from Al Ain, is another popular abaya label with a store in Abu Dhabi Corniche Towers. Those looking for Western-style designs should pay a visit to Mirabelle, an LA concept boutique in Khalifa Park offering classic American fashion.

There is no doubt that Abu Dhabi is a pioneer in the UAE’s arts and culture scene with a grand vision that incorporates milestone collaborations for developments such as Louvre Abu Dhabi and The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and big-ticket events including the Abu Dhabi Film Festival that runs from October 23 to November 1. Cementing its reputation worldwide as a champion of fine arts, Abu Dhabi has reinforced its commitment to bringing the best of classical music to the capital with the revival of the Abu Dhabi Classics that opens this month.

Return of the Classics After a three-year hiatus, Abu Dhabi Classics – an international cultural concert season that features some of the best music talent and orchestras – will be hosted in the UAE capital, Saadiyat Island and Al Ain from October 14 to May 28 next year. “This is a very welcome return of a series which found a strong local, regional and international following and we are confident that the powerful line-up of both established and upcoming global talent will resonate with worldwide classical music lovers,” says HE Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman, Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority. Encompassing the theme of The Traveller, Abu Dhabi Classics’ 2014/15 season will highlight the finest classical music from the east and west, opening on October 14 with a concert on Chopin’s travels at Manarat Al Saadiyat by renowned French pianist Lydie Soloman. Acclaimed classical violinist Gidon Kremer and the Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra will follow on October 28 at the Abu Dhabi Theatre. “This is a concert season which will reflect the excellence that this emirate has achieved in the field of culture,” adds Al Nahyan. So far 12 concerts featuring artists from over 20 countries have been confirmed. In addition to the main programme, the new Abu

Dhabi season will also focus on the transfer of music knowledge with several award-winning artists visiting schools and universities in Abu Dhabi to encourage and inspire a new generation of talent in the country.
Rising ambition A passion for nurturing young artists in the capital is shared by Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF), a non-profit organisation that was established in 1996 with the aim of supporting the city’s cultural vision. ADMAF contributes twofold to the music scene: introducing audiences to different

types of music; and encouraging excellence among young people, pre-professional and professional musicians. ADMAF also creates initiatives that show the positive impact music can have on young people. At 2014’s Abu Dhabi Festival, concerts by the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela conducted by Gustavo Dudamel and the European Union Youth Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy, brought icons of youth music to the UAE capital “to inspire the next generation”. The Artists’ Studio that sees ADMAF interview leading music mavens for YouTube audiences was another key success with featured artists including legends such as Quincy Jones, Al Jarreau, Kevin Spacey and Herbie Hancock. In addition to such creative initiatives ADMAF also offers a series of grants to support independent efforts by young and talented individuals. “ADMAF is committed to helping people realise their creative dreams and artistic endeavours,” explains HE Hoda Al Khamis Kanoo, Founder, ADMAF.

Al Khamis Kanoo is also Artistic Director for the annual Abu Dhabi Festival that celebrates art and culture and brings together musicians, performers and artists. The classical arts event is celebrating its 12th edition in March 2015 with performances by jazz legend Sérgio Mendes, violinist Anne-Sophie Muttea and world-renowned conductor Riccardo Muti among others. Now more than ever there is an audience that appreciates such talent in Abu Dhabi. “The music scene is being grown organically by the people and for the people of the capital. From annual events to pop-up platforms, more and more spaces across Abu Dhabi are creating opportunities for a diverse range of music to be performed and experienced,” adds Al Khamis Kanoo.
Sounds of the Gulf Fou nded i n 2011, t he UA E National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) has engaged audiences with classical and contemporary concerts performed by artists that reside in the country. Representing over 20 nationalities, the NSO is presently made up of more than 100 professional musicians skilled in a range of styles from orchestral through to Arabic music and shines a spotlight on Emirati talent such as opera singers Sara Al Qaiwani and Balqees Fathi and pianist Sarah Al Kaabi.
5
The NSO is showly making an impression outside of the UAE after a rousing performance at the Dubai World Cup in March this year that was televised worldwide. They will now perform in Abu Dhabi with composer George Fenton at the BBC’s Blue Planet in Concert that opens the Volvo Ocean Race’s three-week stopover in the capital. The globally-acclaimed show combines stunning footage from BBC documentary series The Blue Planet with a live orchestral score. The performances on December 12 and 13 will be screened on a 10 metre screen atop a floating stage just off the Abu Dhabi Corniche, and will be a true reflection of the musical harmony that exists today between Abu Dhabi and the rest of the world.

The capital’s lush fairways, beautifully manicured greens and top-drawer clubhouse facilities have been attracting professional and amateur golfers since 1976 when Abu Dhabi Golf Club became the first facility for the sport in the city. Today, the emirate is home to a wide variety of awardwinning courses and is swiftly gaining a reputation as one of the best golfing destinations in the region. The addition of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship to the European PGA Tour calendar in 2006 further boosted the profile of the emirate as a must-play global destination and added a roster of legendary golfing names to its guest list. Since then, golf tourism has flourished in the capital, growing substantially over the years as more visitors arrive in Abu Dhabi with the express purpose of playing a few rounds on its greens. According to figures released by Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi), the emirate saw a 49 percent leap in the number of overseas rounds – a term attributed to non-UAE residents paying for tee-times – played in 2013 versus 2012 and also accounted for over 30 percent of overseas rounds played in the UAE through the latter part of last year. The more recent unveiling of two new courses, the upgrade of existing facilities and the launch of Golf in Abu Dhabi – the definitive go-to resource for course information, stay-and-play packages and events news – has further reaffirmed the emirate’s status as one of the world’s most desirable golfing destinations.

Golf in Abu Dhabi Launched in late 2011, the Golf in Abu Dhabi (GIAD) initiative brought together major players in the tourism sector and local golf clubs with the aim of increasing the emirate’s market share of a segment valued in excess of US$17 billion annually. TCA Abu Dhabi, Etihad Airways and destination management company Hala Abu Dhabi joined forces with six distinctly different golf courses and nearby luxury hotels to create what is effectively a onestop shop for golf travel. Visitors can play a different course every day of their stay, with night golf also an option. (ADGC) and Yas Links Golf Club – together with both the floodlit nine-hole urban course at Abu Dhabi City Golf Club, a unique 18-hole sand course at Al Ghazal Golf Club and the 18-hole country course at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club, situated in the emirate’s second city. With a global remit, GIAD works with nearly 400 international tour operators to promote its suite of stay-and-play options. These range from an exclusive five-night bed and breakfast championship package available every January with access to the HSBC tournament, city tours, rounds of golf and a clinic with a world top-30 player, to fully customisable mix-and-match options that appeal to golfers of every ability that want to spend time in the capital.

For the people at the helm of the emirate’s golf course operations, the partnership with GIAD is based on competitive collaboration to promote Abu Dhabi as the ultimate 19th hole, both in the Middle East as well as internationally. “We have been successful as a region in providing value for money, but we need to make sure that we are also bettering the offerings of top golf destinations such as Spain and Portugal,” says Chris Card, group general manager for Abu Dhabi Golf Club and Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, part of Troon Golf. The focus remains on presenting Abu Dhabi as a five-star international luxury golf destination that can offer something for everyone. “The key time of the year to come and play golf in the UAE is October through to April, but there are very attractive offerings out there from May to October, which allows us to cater to a different market that wouldn’t come in high season,” notes Chris White, general manager, Yas Links Abu Dhabi. The fact that Abu Dhabi’s courses are maintained in a pristine condition year-round is another positive, as is easy accessibility.

“Abu Dhabi is just seven hours from London and there are very few destinations where you have guaranteed winter sun and beach weather. We also see golf professionals using destinations such as the UAE in the winter, where they will come out here for three to four weeks and welcome a different group of 12 people each week for a clinic,” says White. “We also benefit because we have four top-tier annual professional golf events that are held in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Qatar, so if you are a golf fan, you might see the coverage on television and decide to forgo the Portugal proposition this year and try something different,” adds Card. 6
THUMBS UP ABU DHABI
7
The youngest golfer to win a PGA European Tour event and the face of Golf in Abu Dhabi, Matteo Manassero picked up his fourth and biggest tournament career win in 2013 when he became the BMW PGA Champion and entered the top 30 of the Official World Golf Ranking. “[Abu Dhabi] is, without doubt, one of the world’s finest golf destinations. In every corner of the globe I travel for golf tournaments, I am inundated with people asking me about Abu Dhabi and what experiences are on offer. I tell them that it is where I spend my time practising between events, because of the golf facilities and because of the hotels and relaxation it affords visitors. It is number one for me.”
Traditional source markets include the UK, Germany and Sweden, but GIAD and its partners hit the road on a regular basis to take the golfing proposition to new regions. Card says the number of Asian golfers visiting Abu Dhabi seems to have increased fairly rapidly in the last two to three years, certainly from Etihad Airways’ perspective. Golfers from China are also visiting in growing numbers and those from India could start arriving over the next couple of years, linked to growth in the middle classes. “What’s exciting about China is that there is exponential middle- to upperclass growth and, while the domestic golf scene has expanded, these classes are now at a point where they want to try different destinations, from the perspective of a golfing as well as a cultural and shopping experience,” adds White. A new breed of golfers has also brought with it fresh challenges, as White explains: “Language is a definite barrier and we work closely with Etihad Airways when we welcome Chinese groups, using their native-speaking personnel to ensure we deliver the best experience.” Opportunities from the West are also on the radar. Etihad Airways recently launched its Los Angeles route and, with Dallas opening up later this year, all eyes are on the North American market. “The US market has tremendous growth opportunities despite the distance. We see business travellers coming up first and we need to entice them to tag on an extra day of leisure activities that includes golf,” says Card.
73

Yas Links also recently signed an agreement with Etihad Airways, whereby every passenger who is on the ground in the emirate for six hours or more has the choice of three added-value leisure options, from a quick nine holes to pool time. “We are all looking at every single channel through which people can experience Abu Dhabi,” explains White.
8
Rounded offering Abu Dhabi’s golf marketing success story has meant that the three championship courses are seeing increased bookings. “As we continue to add more four- and five-star resort opportunities, we will need more golf courses if we are going to grow further,” says Card. According to GIAD, with more hotels in the pipeline, increased air travel connectivity and a forecasted growth in stop-over business, the focus is on developing a full destination golfing experience and increasing demand for the other courses under its umbrella.

“Airlines and hotels are the main drivers for tourism into the emirate and golf is just one of a number of attractions that round out the experience”
“Here you see an entirely different golf experience. All courses have the latest buggies equipped with GPS; we go out with water and cold towels; there are refreshment offerings every three holes; we offer hi-tech golf academies; and golfers can rent golf clubs with the option of stiff, regular or graphite. It really is the best of the best,” explains White. “Airlines and hotels are the main drivers for tourism into the emirate and golf is just one of a number of attractions that round out the experience. It is 100 percent necessary to have more courses and, if you look at the growth in golf tourism over the last few years, there’s no reason to think that it won’t continue,” he says. Card agrees, adding: “We want people to say ‘I’ve played there and it’s been some of the best golf I’ve ever played’ and want to come back again and again. I believe we can rank our products up against other top destinations.”

The restaurant is about as far from the hustle and bustle of the city centre as you can get and offers homemade Mediterranean cuisine in a family-friendly setting. Dip your toes in the sand as you enjoy a predinner glass of sangria with beachside seating, before heading to your candlelit table on the al fresco patio area. If the sea breeze gets a bit much, diners have the option to
sit inside next to windows that fully fold out; allowing the benefit of fresh outdoor air while remaining sheltered. If you’re visiting on a Thursday or Friday night, head upstairs to Beach House Rooftop. There, unbeatable views of the Arabian Gulf are coupled with chill-out lounge music and a fresh cocktail menu to explore as you relax. Open from 6pm to 2am, this hot spot is perfect for both pre-dinner sundowners and post-dinner night-caps. Where: Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas Contact: 02 4071138
The Yacht Club Bar & Galley While a number of restaurants based at InterContinental Abu Dhabi offer al fresco seating areas, The Yacht Club Bar & Galley offers arguably the most impressive vistas. Directly overlooking the glistening waters of the marina and the super-yachts berthed at its piers, diners will feel like a million dirhams as they sip on Oriental cocktails and sample Asianinspired tapas such as wagyu tataki, coconut shrimps and sushi. In the evenings, the venue transforms into a trendy bar where DJs entertain welldressed guests and bartenders show off their mixing skills. An ideal spot to watch the sunset in style, the bar also presents weekly promotions such as Glitz and Glam ladies’ night on Wednesdays. In addition, the venue presents a Friday Marina Brunch, where guests can explore waterfront barbecues and live cooking stations displaying everything from fresh mussels to pasta dishes. Sontaya Sontaya, meaning sunset in Thai, has won awards for its Southeast Asian cuisine and romantic atmosphere. Accessed via a walkway over water, the venue stands out as special before you’ve even set entered the space. Once inside, the beachside restaurant boasts a number of seating options, including sofas and al fresco pavilions that appear to be floating on water as they overlook shimmering pools. Sontaya is particularly beautiful at nightfall but, if you’re not enchanted by the picturesque décor and scenic coastal views alone, the culinary offerings are sure to tempt your taste buds. Created by Thai chef de cuisine Peter Peerapong, the flavoursome menu features specialities from across Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam, with key highlights a Vietnamese beef salad with homemade garlic chili sauce, massaman short rib curry and steamed red snapper. The restaurant, which also offers a variety of infused beverages prepared by expert mixologists, is an excellent location for a special occasion. Prego’s Bringing flavours of Italy to Abu Dhabi, Prego’s is a restaurant that’s especially appreciated at this time of year when it’s cool enough to dine outside. Opt for a table on the palm tree-lined wooden terrace and enjoy views over the hotel gardens and waterways surrounding Al Maryah Island. It may not quite be Venice, but the eatery’s authentic Italian menu makes up for it. Nibble on antipasti such as bresaola, burrata and Parma ham with melon, before indulging in spreads of seafood and meats. Chefs also prepare an array of pizza, pasta and risotto options to satisfy those hungering for something more substantial, plus traditional desserts from across Italy such as zuccotto from Florence and Sicilian cannoli. After dinner, continue your Italian journey by taking a seat at Enoteca – the first wine bar in Abu Dhabi – and sample fine vintages from well-known Italian winemakers. If you have a sweet tooth, visit Prego’s delicatessen to pick up treats that have been flown all the way from Italy. Where: Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi / Contact: 02 6979011

Making the cut Step into one of Abu Dhabi’s opulent cigar lounges and savour a unique pleasure for the senses
A marker of sophistication and taste, cigars also embody many years of expertise and passion. Each carefully crafted premium cigar is handmade over many months on a journey from seed to shelf, infused with generations of passion and know-how. As with fine wines, the variety in flavour, taste and aroma across many blends offers a robust selection to explore for occasional smokers and aficionados alike. The history of cigars is rooted in the exploits of globetrotting explorers as lucrative international trade routes were established. The very notion of cigar smoking was first recorded among the ancient Mayans of South America who were shown in early 10th century depictions smoking tobacco leaves bound with string. The term cigar itself comes from the Spanish word cigarro, from the Mayan term for smoking sikar.

Christopher Columbus, credited with the discovery of tobacco, encountered early incarnations of cigars upon his arrival in the Americas in 1492. He found indigenous people throughout the Caribbean islands, particularly Cuba, smoking cylindrical bundles of twisted tobacco leaves wrapped in dried palms. Columbus and subsequent explorers in turn introduced the idea to European shores. Cigars soon became popular in Spain, Portugal, France and Italy where Cuban varieties in particular were most prized. Cuba’s warm, temperate climate lends itself particularly well to cultivating all three types of tobacco leaves used in a cigar; the wrapper, filler and binder. Sailing ships carried much sought after Cuban tobacco from Europe to Asia and once Columbus claimed Cuba for Spain, the Spanish took over its burgeoning cigar industry. Considered a luxury pursuit 2
among the gentleman of the day, cigar smoking in Europe and America of the 18th and 19th centuries not only denoted social class but also marked a moment when men would traditionally retire from gatherings to discuss business. Today, cigar smoking is of course not reserved for just men and is a wonderful digestif and pleasurable way to unwind, offering something to savour for all. Enthusiasts not only relish the enjoyment of quality cigars but also collect and age their own selections. A great deal of time, effort and skill goes into crafting the perfect cigar to satisfy a discerning clientele. The artistry involved is a technique handed down from generation to generation. Much like a vintage wine, the choice of soil, type of seed and timing of the tobacco harvest all leave their mark on the finished product. Once harvested, tobacco leaves are aged in a technique that uses heat and shade to reduce sugar and water content to ensure the best quality f lavour and condition for smoking. This first stage, known as curing, can take 25 to 45 days and is tailored to both the specific type of tobacco used and the desired leaf colour. Leaves are then fermented in carefully controlled temperatures and humidity

levels to ensure the drying process occurs slowly and avoids crumbling. It is at this point that the unique characteristics of each cigar emerge such as flavour and aroma combinations. Fermented tobacco leaves can be aged in bales for anything from two to several years and once matured to satisfaction, are used as either filler or wrapper depending on the quality of the finished product. The best quality cigars are handmade and an experienced cigar-roller is easily able to craft hundreds in a day using the skills passed down from previous generations. Tools of the trade include a crescent-shaped knife, known as a chavetas, which helps form the rounded shape of the filler and wrapper leaves. Once rolled, finished cigars are then stored to dry and aged from a minimum of 21 days to many years in some instances if the optimum temperature of 21°C (70°F) is maintained. After ageing, the cigars are sorted by hand into groups for boxing during which time checks for colour and condition are made before finally

packing into cardboard or Spanish cedar boxes. After purchase, it is still possible to age cigars and often, aficionados continue the process by storing in a wooden box inside a humidor in a technique known as box ageing. The world’s most established cigar brands hail from renowned families who have been in the business for generations such as Ortega, General Cigar, Matasa, Davidoff and Padron Cigars. Leading brands often use two types of tobacco for the filler and wrapper in the most sought-after cigars. Long-filler cigars are considered the best quality due to the use of long leaves and often the addition of a third layer or binder between the filler and outer layer, which allows for a variety of delicate and attractive leaves to decorate wrappers. Distinctive and rich flavours are achieved by blending different types of tobacco leaves in the filler and some of the best Cuban brands mix tobaccos from different parts of the island for a truly original taste. Taste, texture and aroma are all important elements which factor in the enjoyment of cigars. Following months or even years of careful attention to detail such as temperature and storage, the intended flavour can be impacted at the last moment by the way in which a cigar is cut and lit. As a result, a variety of implements have been developed specifically to aid cutting depending on the size and type of each cigar. The wedge cutter for example, is designed to open up a larger space to channel the smoke while guillotine cutters offer a precise, straight-edged cut. Chemicals in lighters and matches can also
tarnish taste so, for purists, strips of cedar known as spills or long, sulfurless matches offer optimum conditions to enjoy. Setting is also of great importance and a well-considered venue boasting the right ambience and comfort in which to enjoy cigars is the perfect complement to the many months of hard work and dedication channelled into each handmade cigar. In Abu Dhabi, a host of stunning venues provide not only a bespoke space for the cigar smoker but also grand destinations which pay tribute to the pastime’s classic roots while offering an excellent selection of brands to try presented by knowledgeable staff. Cloud Nine at Sheraton Abu Dhabi is a dedicated cigar and champagne bar offering a premium cigar selection in a masculine yet homely setting. Guests recline on cosy dark leather armchairs as they smoke and sample fresh oysters and top quality fizz from the decadent menu. During the evenings, from Monday to Saturday, resident pianist Bruno adds to the relaxed and sophisticated ambience by performing sets of live music. Elsewhere in Abu Dhabi, Havana Club at Emirates Palace is as grand as the hotel that houses it. Cigar connoisseurs will revel in the lounge’s selection of rare cigars, while those who like to pair smoking with a beverage or two can explore a vast selection of fine cognacs from across the globe. Located conveniently on the lobby level, the bar’s cigar leaf laden walls and humidors create a sophisticated atmosphere that’s ideal for winding down at the end of a day.

An alternative destination that’s equally excellent for the discerning smoker is The St. Regis Bar at The St. Regis Abu Dhabi. A lengthy selection of worldy cigars awaits guests who find themselved seated in the intimate ambience of the bar’s Cigar Lounge; a classic yet intimate spot rich in walnut finishings. Quench your thirst with a signature St. Regis Bloody Mary, prepared by one of the bar’s expert mixologists. Another lounge within a bar, Cigar Lounge at Al Hanah Bar, Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, is a popular choice for connoisseurs in the capital who want to indulge in topquality cigars in a tranquil and cosy setting. Head outdoors to the bar’s terrace and enjoy a spectacular view over the canal that’s particularly beautiful at sunset.

Hit the road in search of the emirate's best adventure spots Al Gharbia Al Gharbia is feted for its beautiful beaches – gleaming arcs of white sand that see very few people from one day to the next. Another opportunity for visitors looking to immerse themselves in nature awaits on Sir Bani Yas Island, an animal sanctuary that’s home to an exotic array of beasts. Al Ain, Abu Dhabi Known as the garden city thanks to the abundance of oases and date-palm plantations here, Al Ain has long been the agricultural heart of Abu Dhabi. More recently, the area has been recognised for its historic significance. Liwa, Abu Dhabi The origins of the UAE can be traced back to Liwa Oasis where the Bani Yas tribe lived before moving to the coast and laying the foundations of modern Abu Dhabi. The journey there is coupled with beautiful scenery with sand dunes reaching up to 300 metres.
The Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club offers a riding club and show jumping arena with a stable of 100 horses. Horse races are also held on Sunday evenings during the racing season.

Parks & gardens A LIFE OF LUXURY The UAE's coastal location and year-round sunshine make it a veritable playground for yachting enthusiasts. The luxury lifestyle the destination is famed for is transferred to the waves where taking a luxury cruise on a superyacht is a popular activity for visitors looking for an extra-special experience. Whether for a few hours or several days, visitors have ample opportunity to charter yachts. Two upcoming events this year are particularly popular with such aficionados; the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in November which sees yachts lining the Yas Marina track and the Volvo Ocean Race Abu Dhabi in December, where sailing fanatics from across the region meet in the capital to celebrate the race and the sport of sailing.

WINING AND DINING BILL PLEASE
Although the UAE is a Muslim country, alcohol is permitted in several emirates including Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Wine, Champagne and spirits are available in most five-star hotels, but be warned, there is zero tolerance to drink-driving and being drunk in public is a crime, both punishable with a fine and, in more serious cases, imprisonment.
As a general rule, all hotels will add a 10 percent charge to restaurant bills in addition to the six percent fee levied by the government. Most menus state whether these taxes have already been incorporated or not but check with the waiter if it is unclear.

HERITAGE VILLAGE Designed to resemble a traditional oasis village, this quaint attraction provides an interesting glimpse into the emirate’s past. There’s a Bedouin tent, reconstructions of original date palm houses, an example of the ancient falaj irrigation system and a small spice shop selling dried herbs and other trinkets.

EMIRATES PALACE The iconic palace stands in pride of place at the tip of the Abu Dhabi Corniche and embodies the luxury lifestyle the capital has cultivated. Until recently the most expensive hotel ever to be built, the impressive structure is richly adorned with precious materials. 12 different shades of marble can be spotted in the cavernous atrium, while the central dome holds dual records as both the largest in the world and the greatest gilded expanse ever created in one building.

SHEIKH ZAYED GRAND MOSQUE Built by the late Sheikh Zayed to help build a bridge between faiths and create greater cross-cultural understanding, the Grand Mosque is a must-see for any visitor to Abu Dhabi. The third-largest mosque in the world, this majestic structure is wrought from over 1,000 columns and 82 domes embellished with semi-precious stones, gold and marble. Inside, the spectacle is equally impressive with glittering chandeliers, spectacular floral motifs adorning the walls and a vast hand-woven Persian carpet in the main prayer hall.

My life in Abu Dhabi Fashion entrepreneur Maryam Al Hamly discusses life in the UAE capital
}
1
1 Qasr al Hosn 2 Zuma, The Galleria
The UAE is a cosmopolitan country and a cultural melting pot. I am a UAE national, born in Dubai and working in Abu Dhabi and the capital’s pace and focus on culture has allowed me to cultivate many different interests at a deeper level. The country continues to grow tremendously in the fields of fashion and beauty. As partner of thestylechamber.com, I keep a close eye on emerging design talent. Graduate school fashion shows and pop-ups offer a great insight on who our next industry innovators might be. There is always something new happening in Abu Dhabi. At weekends, I love discovering new places, restaurants and events. The Koi Restaurant & Lounge restaurant at The St. Regis Abu Dhabi offers a great truffle beef carpaccio, but I also enjoy dining at Zuma at The Galleria and Toki at Hilton Abu Dhabi for their sushi and teppanyaki dishes, as well as Brasserie Angelique at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers. I am really fond of activities with a creative edge and keep a look out for events in the arts and fashion sector, such as Art
Abu Dhabi and cultural festivals at Qasr al Hosn. When I have friends visiting, I always recommend the Manarat Al Saadiyat for its unique art events or exhibitions. Also, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is marvellous for bringing together the cultural diversity of the Islamic world, combining historical and modern aesthetics in its architecture. My best memory of Abu Dhabi is the first time I visited Saadiyat Beach as a child. I was stunned by its beauty. Its pristine white beaches and sparkling blue waters continue to rival the greatest in the world. Nothing rivals the outdoors when the weather is at its best. For family time, Yas Waterworld is a great place for everyone to have fun. As for shopping, I prefer visiting the Central Market Souk as it’s highly accessible and has everything I need in one place. It also has a lovely old-world charm to it. I think the best time to be in Abu Dhabi is during the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. It definitely is one of the best events in the capital’s busy social calendar and, for those few days, the whole world has eyes for only one place – Yas Island.
My best memory of Abu Dhabi is the first time I visited Saadiyat Beach as a child. I was stunned by its untouched beauty
