We in the UAE capital believe our homeland is something of a welcome contradiction for travellers. It is a place where deep-rooted Arabian heritage is deftly woven into a rich destination tapestry complete with luxury accommodation and world-class leisure attractions. I hope during your stay you are able to experience as much of this variety as possible. In many ways, this emirate is several destinations in one, from the rustic charm of Al Ain, the birthplace of the country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and the breathtaking vastness of the Liwa Desert in Al Gharbia with its mountainous dunes, to the energising pace and brightness of our capital city. We all share a desire to make you feel as welcome as possible and hope you leave with a positive, lasting impression of our homeland, traditions and people. In the pages of this magazine, you will find an overview of the emirate’s widespread appeal and I’m sure you will find much to inspire and entertain you. I wish you a relaxing, enjoyable and memorable stay in Abu Dhabi.

—— An exciting roster of leisure attractions has been changing the face of tourism in the UAE, offering a range of fantastic fun-filled activities. And over the next few years visitors will have an even greater selection of offerings to explore. From the recent addition of two major theme parks to Dubai Safari, Dubai Ferris Wheel on Bluewaters Island and the AED2 billion Warner Bros. theme park planned for Yas Island in 2018, the UAE’s fun factor is set for a major boost. First up is colossal indoor theme park IMG Worlds of Adventure which, since opening in August, has been wowing visitors with its impressive 1.5 million square foot venue. Divided into four zones – Marvel, Cartoon Network, Lost Valley – Dinosaur Adventure and IMG Boulevard, discover an exciting array of adrenaline-pumping rollercoasters and rides based on popular Cartoon Network characters, Marvel superheroes and dinosaurs. The mega park is also home to 25 stores, 28 food and beverage outlets, a haunted hotel experience and a 12-screen Novo cinema. Speaking at the time of the opening, Ilyas Galadari and Mustafa Galadari, executive co-chairmen and owners of the venue said: “This landmark launch has turned our aspirations of creating the world’s largest indoor theme park into a reality. As the first international mega-themed park to open in the region, IMG Worlds of Adventure will set a new universal standard for a fully immersive theme park experience, further driving tourism whilst enabling the United Arab Emirates to achieve its vision of becoming the leading global leisure and entertainment destination.” The billion-dirham project is fully indoors and offers more than 20 signature rides and attractions, including live shows and a 5D cinema experience. THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT ——— Coupling its traditional sensibility with a penchant for on-trend collaborations, Swarovski’s history is as innovative as it is intriguing. Concierge talks exclusively with brand CEO Robert Buchbauer
From couture gowns and designer accessories bedecked in brightly coloured crystal stones to decorative crystal lighting and multi-faceted figurines, Swarovski has infiltrated every creative avenue from fashion to jewellery and beyond. “Our material can be put into so many different contexts, each time becoming an integral part of the design so we actually have growth possibilities into many directions when it comes to product categories,” says Swarovski’s enigmatic CEO Robert Buchbauer. It’s an all-encompassing that statement that not many brands can, so successfully, lay claim to. Yet, with over 120 years experience in mastering crystal cutting, it’s a fact that rings true for the Austrian house. The company was founded on Daniel Swarovski’s vision to create ‘a diamond for everyone’. “He invented a mechanical machine that could cut crystal stones in never seen before quality and quantity,” explains Buchbauer. “This was the ideal combination as he was able to bring down the price of sought-after stones while at the same time increase their quality. This premium condition has always been important to the manufacturers that use our stones, because they in turn need to use a standardised and consistent quality for their products to then be considered high quality as well.” Staying true to the brand’s fundamental values has been instrumental to the company’s triumph. “The whole history of the company is about reinventing itself without abandoning its original principles.
22
And at the core of Swarovski is cut crystal.” Buchbauer reveals it was the expansion into jewellery that really helped the business grow to today’s global level. “The jewellery required a lot of experimenting and there was internal resistance when we first launched finished jewellery products because some members felt this would be in direct competition with our customers’ businesses and the products they used to create with our stones. “However the demand of the market proved to be too strong and we first launched our own collections through third party distribution, which became very successful. This in turn helped create a new jewellery market which our customers also benefitted from. Fashion jewellery became a category in its own right with proprietary designs that were far beyond just imitation of real jewellery. This encouraged a huge growth in the jewellery industry overall and the result made everybody happy.” As the great great grandchild of Daniel Swarovski, and the fifth generation to helm company, Buchbauer reveals that, as with many family businesses, this sort of ownership is not without its challenges. At a time when many premium brands underestimated the world of digitalisation, Swarovski, through Buchbauer, took an early lead in e-commerce opening their digital operations in 2001. “At the time I had a lot of internal advisors telling me this is going to fail, but this new venture brought out a lot of ambition with our

partners. Today we have both our online business, which happens to be a very profitable, and we have a growing base of independent retailers running our mono-brand stores.” This base impressively now includes nearly 2,700 boutiques around the world and 8,000 multibrand retailers. Delving further into the complexities of a family-run business, Buchbauer says: “The older the company gets the more you have to professionalise its organisation as it passes from one generation to the next. I would say from the first generation to the second, it was an organic progression. We had a founder and three adult sons, who grew naturally into the company actively participating in growing the business from, more or less, day one. And then from the third generation to the fourth and now the fifth, each stage has been a different story.” Having progressed over time to a business-to-consumer model, generational change is not the only evolution Buchbauer is projecting for the future. “There are a few developments that will again change and shape the way we’re doing business, specifically in consumer goods. The industry is gravitating towards megacities. It’s been said there’s going to be about 450 really big cities in the world that represent a ‘make it or break it’ potential and this trend is probably 9
10
going to change our distribution model to a large extent as we hone our focus more on the wealth and potential of these megacities.” No doubt Swarovski’s knack for forming relationships with creatives from the industry’s upper echelons, not to mention its ever-expanding portfolio of arresting collaborations, will continue to see the brand march forwards towards further global domination. Currently it’s the fall brand campaign, a striking series of eight portraits shot by talented snapper Tim Walker, that has jewellery aficionados doing a double-take. A collective of fashion heavyweights, lead by catwalk darling Karlie Kloss, Swarovski’s newest ambassador, Brilliant Inspiration sees top influencers such as designers Jason Wu, Mary Katrantzou and Charlotte Olympia Dellal lend their artistic charms to Swarovski’s latest season of sparkle. Commenting at the time of Kloss’ appointment, Buchbauer said: “We wanted to bring our brand to the next level but also the next generation — we thought that Karlie would be a perfect match. She represents a certain openness and a new philosophy. She is very fashionable and very beautiful, which is key when you talk about the next generation of consumer — specifically, powerful women who should become our long-term customers.” The latest jewellery Autumn/Winter 2016 collection, entitled Crystal Galaxy, takes its inspiration from vivid cosmic nights and iridescent space icicles. Creative Director Nathalie Colin explains: “It’s the perfect theme to play with light and shadow and to create some pieces exuding this mysterious appeal of the galaxy, either in a figurative or in a more abstract way. We worked on round and 3D volumes, new shapes, versatile silhouettes in a gradation of shades evoking eclipses, stars and constellations.” Much like the brand itself, this latest collection reflects an inimitable creative attitude that signals there’s plenty more to come from the Austrian house. —— Swarovski collections are available at The Galleria on Al Maryah Island. LEGACY TIMEPIECE
HARRY WINSTON —— Nothing quite compares to the ingenuity of the Histoire de Tourbillon collection by Harry Winston and the new edition reflects this legacy. The dramatic aesthetics, technical brilliance and attention to detail of the new Histoire de Tourbillon 7 timepiece really does break conventionality with its two biaxial tourbillons that dance with time, each on its own axis. This is all visible through a pyramid-cut on the dial that also houses the minute and hour hands, while the power reserve indicator is presented in a unique roll form. Limited to 20 pieces.

HUBLOT —— Hublot has won us over with the new MP-05 ‘LaFerrari’ Sapphire that takes the original marvelous design of the MP-05 ‘LaFerrari’ and presents it in a case carved out of sapphire, which results in a movement that appears to be suspended in mid-air. Designed in collaboration with Ferrari’s design director, Flavio Manzoni, this timepiece effortlessly fuses art and technique. Its tourbillon boasts a 50-day power reserve and the movement boasts the highest number of components for a Hublot movement to date – 637 in total. Limited to 20 pieces.

LOUIS MOINET —— Independent watchmaker Louis Moinet’s latest creation, the Sideralis inverted double tourbillon, is an ode to the universe. It’s claimed to have the largest assembly of two tourbillons in existence. Look closer and at 12 o’clock, there is a circular opening that depicts the planet Mars, the Moon, and Mercury in succession where each of these micro-paintings features genuine dust from the respective planets. It took a year to develop the delicate painting technique and it’s the first time artwork of this kind has taken shape on the bridges and baseplate of a watch. A special airbrush was developed so the artist could spray colours, one droplet at a time, to avoid jeopardising the calibre’s equilibrium. It takes artisans around 540 hours – from the development of the calibre to the manual finishing of each of its 246 components – to achieve the clever balance between a tourbillon mechanism and the airy openworked aesthetic. The play on shadow and light emphasises the hand-engraved barrel-shaped tourbillon movements in this unique three-dimensional mosaic.

ULYSSE NARDIN —— Celebrating the 20th anniversary of its Marine collection, Ulysse Nardin proudly pays tribute to its roots in the Grand Deck Marine Tourbillon. Designed to resemble the teak deck of a sailboat, the time display pulls a ‘boom’ – the horizontal spar used to angle the mainsail on a boat – across a wooden marquetry dial using high-tech nanowire around a series of winches that emulate the rigging of a ship. The mechanism is linked to the 60-second flying tourbillon in the manual-wound calibre UN-630, which is made up of 469 components. Limited to 18 pieces.

Ancient art ——— Concierge chats to Dubai-based calligraphy artist, Majid Alyousef, about this timeless art form

“IT IS LIKE A FOR M OF MEDITATION AND INNER EXPLOR ATION. IT IS ALSO A L ANGUAGE THAT REPRESENTS M ANY CONCEPTS IN AN ABSTR ACT AND VERBAL WAY”
There’s an inextricable link between Islam and writing. This connection stems from the fact that calligraphy was the primary means of preserving the Qur’an. Found amongst mosques, books, tombs, architecture, paintings – Arabic calligraphy has left a unique visual stamp in every conceivable corner of the Islamic world.
P H O T O E S S AY / EX P E R I E NC E
Masterfully inscribed on coins, paintings, mosque interiors and ancient architecture, Arabic calligraphy is a treasured creative form that bridges the gap between religion and the art of writing. Requiring decades of practice to truly master, there’s a unique sense of serenity attributed to this traditional art as calligraphers thoughtfully contemplate each inky stroke. “For me it is like a form of meditation and inner exploration. It is also a language that represents many concepts in an abstract and verbal way” explains artist Majid Alyousef. It was an early passion that spurred on his fascination in calligraphy. “I started drawing and painting at the young age of eight, although over the years it was my interest in calligraphy that really flourished. I went on to gain a BA degree in Fine Arts and a MA degree in Interaction Design and during my career I’ve worked with several internationally recognised branding and advertising agencies.” Now working out of his studio in Dubai, Alyousef says a typical day begins with an assessment of on-going projects and requests. “Usually it starts with a quick review of the work currently under construction, be it paintings or sketches. It’s good to take notes with a fresh eye early in the day. Then I do some warm up lettering and calligraphy exercises before moving on to the tasks for that day. Although a traditionalist in some respects, in many others Alyousef is no doubt keen to keep his style innovative. “For the classical artworks, though I use contemporary tools, I usually
follow the traditions of the old masters keeping the techniques similar. Then for modern styles I do more intuitive and improvised sketches in the first stages – although the final art piece is far from improvised and would be more of a studied result.” From calligraphy paintings to typography consultancy and type-face design the Saudi artist offers a variety of interesting services. Among them includes the ‘Arabisation’ of existing foreign brands. Alyousef explains designing an Arabic logotype in this way “involves a visual analysis of the typographic style used in the original brand mark, followed by a design in Arabic that visually matches the logo”. While he enjoys experimenting with contemporary styles, for those who are just starting to explore the art, he suggests starting with more classical types. “Most calligraphers, especially beginners, like modern styles that look good, but are not extremely difficult to master.Young artists tend to learn these styles to make pieces in a short time with a lot of creative flexibility. Classical calligraphy is difficult, but to be really good, in any modern style, you have to start with the classics to understand the basic rules of aesthetics and then develop your own style.” He also stresses that it’s important to keep evolving as an artist. “I think the artist should also be an intellectual person, so beside continuous practicing, reading and learning, the theory and philosophy of art is important. There is always something new to learn and discover, and that should be the attitude of an artist.”
The word ‘calligraphy’ originates from the Greek meaning ‘beautiful writing’. Centuries of expertise have been handed down the generations to preserve the ancient art of calligraphy.
Approaching the science behind the art, Alyousef explains that, for him, essentially it comes down to three key elements – geometry, a sense of vision and neuro-aesthetics. “Geometry is a very critical part of composition and the attractiveness of geometrical shapes is directly related to the way the brain perceives them. The visual process in the brain comes from two main components; the first one defines lines and contours and the other is concerned with colour and tonality. Neuro-aesthetics, on the other hand, is the study of aesthetics from a scientific perspective. I use some of these principles in order to create compositions using paints. When looking at a painting our eyes only take in small segments of the painting and then the brain stitches them together to form the whole experience. In reality we can’t recognise more than five centimetres of any object we look at any given moment. But, as the eye scans the canvas area capturing its many segments, it allows us to put the image together and understand the subject in that particular painting. In my artwork I try to shuffle the stages of that process and rearrange multiple segments in more intricate forms. I also play with the spacing and positioning of objects – the result is very interesting.” Traditionally, Islamic calligraphy is drawn using a carved reed pen and there are several styles within the genre, each with distinct shapes and characteristics. Mastering this kind of calligraphy means mastering the Arabic alphabet which consists of a script of 28 letters
50
distinguished by a dot or dots placed above or below the letter. Discussing the similarities, as well as the differences between traditional Arabic calligraphy and other mainstream forms, Alyousef tells us: “the main similarity is the skill. Arabic, Latin and Chinese calligraphy require a lot of patience and practice. Yet the differences can clearly be seen in the way you acquire that skill. Arabic calligraphy needs a lot of control when moving the slanted cut pen on the paper and a lot of retouching and refining is done to complete an art piece, in Latin a steady hand is required but some areas do need quick and sharp moves to achieve the desired form, and usually they use broad straight cut pens. While in Chinese and Japanese calligraphy the artist uses a delicate brush held almost perpendicularly to create strokes with quick sharp moves. “Looking at my paintings, the most recognisable characteristic is the strong motion gestures that is suggested by lines. I focus on defining the contour of letters and showing their unique forms with lines, this component works in harmony with the other important component, which is colour and coloured spaces.” Constantly evolving, while calligraphy has been adopted and embraced in many modern day aspects, from logo creation to graffiti-style paintings, its unbreakable link back to religion and ancient expression remains a significant part of its enduring appeal. —— For more information about this artist’s work, visit: majidalyousef.com

THE A-TEAM ——— At Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, Oliver Jackson and his chefs are responsible for some of the city’s finest dishes
One of the capital’s most prestigious locations, Jumeirah at Etihad Towers champions an inimitable blend of luxury and five-star hospitality. A soaring landmark amidst the city’s skyline, its gleaming hotel tower is one of five in the complex, which also includes three residential towers and one office tower. Housing an enticing selection of 11 varied dining haunts, the hotel’s executive chef Oliver Jackson is at the helm of its impressive gastronomic offering. “I arrived in Abu Dhabi for the pre-opening of Jumeirah at Etihad Towers five years ago. I spent a long time hiring the correct chefs and I have huge respect for each and every one of them” explains Jackson. The New Zealand chef’s admiration for his team is clear as he goes on to describe some of the hotel’s signature restaurants and its culinary squad. “Chef Jouni Ibrahim, chef de cuisine at Li Beirut takes classic Lebanese cuisine to a new realm of artistry through the utilisation of modern cooking styles and refined arrangements. This is not Lebanese fare as you know it. Guests should prepare for a new gastronomic experience that is rooted in style, technique and above all a balance of texture and flavour. At Brasserie Angélique seasonal cuisine undoubtedly takes centre stage, impeccably prepared by chef Niels van Oers and his team. In a salute to tradition, Niels maintains the integrity of the French dishes served, relying on ingredients and cooking techniques to provide an authentic French gastronomic experience. Finally at Ray’s Grill meat lovers will be taken on a culinary journey through a diversity of world-famous cattle breeds sourced from the finest producers in Australia, Ireland, France and the USA. From Black Angus and Charolais to Wagyu and Brahman, the freshness of quality produce combined with exemplary cooking techniques by chef Jordan Annabi and his team are what make this contemporary steakhouse a place to revisit.” Successfully turning an early passion into a flourishing career, Jackson recounts how he first got into cooking. “My father was an exceptional cook, he was always pickling, preserving, making pâtés, he had a huge love for food.
56
This passion rubbed off on me and I started cooking at a very early age, learning what I could from him. This has now passed on to my daughter.” These days his busy schedule includes everything from briefings with department heads and promoting ideas to overseeing lunch and dinner service and new menu approvals. Expanding on the behind the scenes work involved in new menu tasting and preparation, Jackson adds: “I keep up with the latest trends around the world so I will work with my chef de cuisines and as a team we’ll put ideas together. We then work on taste, texture and presentation until we are happy with it. We use many of the high-end suppliers in the UAE, although 90 percent of the food has to be imported which makes things more difficult but we manage very well to procure what we need.” Opening up about his own personal recommendations, Jackson eagerly talks us through his three top dishes. “A favourite and one of chef Jouni’s specialities is the Lebanese mixed Mahashi from Li Beirut. It has lamb, mint, stuffed vine leaves and stuffed marrow all braised in a light savory and sour broth. At Brasserie Angélique it’s the lapin de garenne en cocotte. Chef Niels cooks this braised rabbit dish with vegetables, prunes and potatoes perfectly. It has bucket loads of flavour and is super tender and juicy. Then at BiCE, the truffle and taleggio frittata is always a triumph. Chef Alessandro cooks a thin egg omelette with fresh truffle, Parmesan, chives and the famous washed rind taleggio cheese to order. It is a great dish to share as a starter as it’s rich but very moreish.” Looking ahead, Jackson reveals there are plenty of culinary highlights still to look forward to. “This October we’re doing a Discover America promotion in conjunction with the American Embassy featuring famous foods from across the States. Then in November, Jumeirah at Etihad Towers will be celebrating its fifth anniversary incorporating a selection of surprises and great offerings throughout the month.” —— For more information and to book a table at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, contact: 02 8115555

—— Located on Abu Dhabi’s prestigiousYas Island, Radisson Blu Hotel, Abu Dhabi Yas Island benefits from a fantastic array of surrounding leisure and entertainment options. That’s not to say though the hotel itself doesn’t offer more than enough to keep visitors enticed. There are several new and re-launched brunches to take your pick from, although, for us, it’s the brand new Brussels Brunch at Belgian Beer Café that has us already planning our next visit. Perfect for those who like to get a jump start on the day, brunch runs from 10am to 2pm. Along with the early start also comes brunch classics in the more conventional sense. Expect to tuck into traditional treats including perfectly poached eggs drizzled with Hollandaise sauce, Belgian waffles generously topped with Chantilly cream, Middle Eastern favourite Shakshouka as well as a gourmet remix of Amsterdam cheese waffles with confit duck, avocado and cherry. There’s also a grills station with sizzling meats and burgers to accompany your breakfast and even a Bloody Mary bar where you can mix up your own cocktails. Packages start from AED120 per person.

The graceful curves and bold architectural design of Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi makes it one of the most recognisable locations in the capital. Perfectly at home at this exceptional venue is Kazu. Presenting an impressive selection of authentic Japanese fare, the restaurant effortlessly blends several key elements of contemporary Japanese dining. Elevating the stylish interiors, the addition of a dedicated sushi and sashimi bar, robata-yaki grill and two teppanyaki bars all add to the overall aesthetics and create an energetic vibe. A wonderful way to experience Kazu’s varied gastronomic delights is with the Omakase menu, or Chef’s Choice, a delightful edit of chef Idfan’s most treasured dishes. Nestled within Venetian Village, adjoining The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal, Inakaya offers authentic Japanese robata-yaki style cooking – robata meaning ‘around a sunken hearth’ and yaki meaning ‘grilling’. Perfect for diners looking for a little joviality with their meal, take prime position at the counter and enjoy the showmanship of the grill 6 masters in action as they expertly prepare skewers of succulent cuts that are enthusiastically served straight to your plate on long wooden paddles. This traditional sense of cooking has gained popularity and with passionate chefs like those at Inakaya it’s easy to see why. Robata ingredients range from the menu’s Kobe beef and free-range chicken to black cod fillet and king crab leg. So there’s certainly more than enough to tempt the palate. While the robatayaki table is great to soak up the restaurant’s festive feel, now is also the perfect time to take advantage of the capital’s cooler climes and enjoy a seat on the terrace. HERITAGE VILLAGE Designed to resemble a traditional oasis village, this quaint attraction provides an interesting glimpse into the emirate’s past. There’s a Bedouin tent, reconstructions of original date-palm houses, an example of the ancient falaj irrigation system and a small spice shop selling dried herbs and other trinkets.

EMIRATES PALACE The iconic palace takes pride of place at the tip of the Abu Dhabi Corniche and embodies the luxury lifestyle the capital has cultivated. Until recently, the most expensive hotel ever to be built, the impressive structure is richly adorned with precious materials. Twelve different shades of marble can be spotted in the cavernous atrium, while the central dome holds dual records as both the largest in the world and the greatest gilded expanse ever created in one building.

ASK THE CONCIERGE
Ali Osman, chief concierge at Armed Forces Officers Club and Hotel, offers his top tourist recommendations around Abu Dhabi
1
With cooler climes now upon us the city’s al fresco offerings have really opened up. The capital is well known for its many cultural venues and those looking to get an insight into the region’s customs, traditions and religion are spoilt for choice. Of course one of Abu Dhabi’s most impressive landmarks is the striking Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Located near Armed Forces Officers Club and Hotel, guests can visit the venue by using our free shuttle service or take advantage of the weather and enjoy a 10-minute stroll, taking in the mosque’s awe-inspiring exteriors as you approach. Other key attractions that should be high on any visitor list include Qasr Al Hosn, a historic watchtower that was once the ancestral home of Abu Dhabi’s ruling Al Nahyan family and The Heritage Village – a recreated village showcasing traditional Bedouin lifestyle, located on the Corniche Breakwater. While in the area, I’d also recommend visiting the Corniche promenade. This eight-kilometre stretch is dotted with cafés, pathways and wonderful places to enjoy the
“BE SURE TO VISIT THE ROTATING RESTAUR ANT, TIAR A, AND TAKE A RIDE ON THE M ALL’S FERRIS WHEEL THE M ARINA EYE FOR SPECTACUL AR VIEWS OF THE CIT Y SKYLINE AND WATERSIDE LOCALE”

sunset. Ideal for families or those who want to unwind in the sunshine, you’ll find the crystal waters of Abu Dhabi a wonderful backdrop. Al Bateen beach and Yas Beach are also great for a fun day in the sun. If you’re looking for a more action-packed way to spend your day, our hotel is home to the Caracal Shooting Club. Designed to international standards, it’s the first commercial shooting club in the city and boasts a 25-metre range and a variety of shooting activities. Afterwards the spa at Armed Forces Officers Club and Hotel, complete with steam bath and Jacuzzi, is perfect to relax after an active afternoon. Abu Dhabi is famous for its many retail offerings and shoppers will find everything from high-end fashion labels to niche boutiques at malls across the city. Not your average shopping destination, The Galleria on Al Maryah Island is my top recommendation for luxury fashion brands as the mall is filled with labels such as Prada and Louis Vuitton. Marina Mall, situated on the Corniche Breakwater, is another stand out complex. The mall is sleek and spacious, offering something for the whole family. Be sure to visit the revolving restaurant, Tiara, and take a ride on the Marina Eye, the mall’s Ferris wheel which offers spectacular views of the city skyline and busy waterside locale. If you’re eager to sample of the city’s popular dining venues I’d suggest a visit to Safina at Saadiyat Beach Club. Overlooking a picturesque private beach, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy sundowners and the venue’s sumptuous Mediterranean food. At our hotel, Kennedy is a signature restaurant and a must for special occasions as it prides itself on providing a total dining experience offering everything from gourmet cuisine to exceptional service.
