Dubai Creek is the beating heart of the city and a wonderful reminder of times past. Once an important fishing and trading port, it buzzed with boats ferrying goods and people across its waters. A similar scene unfolds still as traditional vessels transport visitors between the banks and dhows are loaded with wares for neighbouring countries and beyond. Here, in the old quarter, distinctive wind tower architecture leads on to historic buildings that house a thriving art scene where artists capture lasting portraits of this special space.

Of all the activities I recommend to guests, a visit to At the Top, the viewing platform in the world's tallest tower Burj Khalifa is without doubt one of the best. Located on level 124, the observation deck provides a stunning panoramic view of the entire city and beyond. Visitors looking to take advantage of the incredible shopping oportunities should not miss The Dubai Mall. As the world's largest shoping space, it has everything you could wish for under one roof. As well as a variety of shopping options, there is also plenty of entertainment with an ice rink, cinema and myriad restaurants serving every type of cuisine imaginable. An exhilirating experience is offered at Skydive Dubai where a team of expert instructors is on hand to guide guests through an adrenaline-filled sky dive. The activity also affords incredible views over Palm Jumeirah in an encounter to remember. Dubai is home to a fantastic array of historical and cultural attractions. I recommend a walk around Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood which is the city's oldest quarter. Here, visitors can stop for a cultural breakfast or lunch at Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding and pay a visit to Dubai Museum where exhibits chart Dubai's development from fishing village to thriving modern metropolis. After a busy day sightseeing, a superb evening meal can be enjoyed at Al Muntaha restaurant at Burj Al Arab, where a selection of fine international fare awaits. Studio du Chef at Sofitel The Palm, Dubai, is also worth a visit for its authentic French cuisine. There are plenty of places to capture amazing photographs and one of the best is atmospheric Dubai Creek with its beautiful vistas.

A pleasant way to while away the afternoon, the tradition of afternoon tea is taken to another level in Dubai where five-star hotels add the luxurious touch. At Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah the offering exceeds expectations and, at Peacock Alley, a selection of fine teas, beverages and small plates is offered. The choice includes London Afternoon Tea with finger sandwiches and fresh scones, and a Parisian Afternoon Tea of sandwiches, pastries and ĂŠclairs. When: Daily, 2.30 to 6pm. Price: From AED150. Dubai Creek occupies a special place in the history of the emirate. The impressive city that stands today grew from its bustling banks, evolving in tandem with a stretch of water that facilitated trade while the fishing and pearl diving industries flourished. For the people of Dubai, the creek was and still is, the focal point of daily life. Abras are traditional wooden boats used to ferry passengers across the water and are a wonderful way to take in the creek. The journey across the water connects the gold and spice souks with the Bur Dubai souk on the opposite side and is also an excellent starting point for exploring the city’s oldest quarter, Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood with its traditional buildings and distinctive wind tower architecture. Today, Dubai Creek is an attraction in its own right as visitors flock to the historic area. Buzzing with activity, the quayside’s cargo is loaded onto boats bound for neighbouring countries and beyond as visitors make trips back and forth, taking in the views of both the old town and modern city. As the sun sets, the scene is transformed once more and the bright lights of Downtown Dubai shimmer in the distance as a sense of both the city’s past and present is felt.

In the movement Concierge visits the home of Glashütte Original to observe as the watchmaker both creates its timepieces and preserves a lasting legacy

Nestled in the Müglitz valley of Eastern Germany is the serene town of Glashütte. Here, at the birthplace of German watchmaking, the population is made up predominantly of skilled artisans who create beautiful timepieces for the country’s greatest watch houses. While competition and brand rivalry outside the Saxon town may be fierce, manufacturers in the watchmaking hamlet sit side by side in peaceful alliance. In the workshops of Glashütte Original, generations of families work alongside each other. Experienced artisans and fresh-faced graduates from Glashütte Original’s school for aspiring watchmakers work in unison, drawing on their strengths to craft some of the finest quality timepieces available. Walking through the workshops of Glashütte Original, the passion of the team here is evident and is reflected in an attention to detail that defines the final products. CEO Yann Gamard explains that watchmakers are committed to, and find great joy in, the quest for perfection. “They love to produce beautiful movements. Their attention and care in the finishing of each individual component is really what makes each piece special.”

The path for watchmakers and companies in Glashütte hasn’t been easy. The town has found itself in the middle of three wars and a number of political regimes; many of which threatened the survival of the watchmaking trade. After World War II, when a large area of nearby Dresden was destroyed, the watchmakers of Glashütte came together under one company umbrella, GUB (Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe). When the Berlin Wall, separating East from West Germany fell in 1989, the company was temporarily closed. However, the pride and love for the unique art of German watchmaking endured and, in time, GUB restarted, minus a few brands that separated from the mother company, such as A. Lange & Söhne and Moritz Grossman. Glashütte Original set about rebuilding business and bringing back its craftspeople, rapidly growing the number of workers from 72 to today’s 550. Far from condemning past events, Gamard attributes much of the company’s success to its difficult early days. “We’ve had a very

intense history. We’ve been through monarchy, fascism, communism and democracy. This place has been told to believe in different things every time, so the watchmakers came to the understanding that the only real thing they could believe in was their art. They have consolidated their rules and ensured their survival through their art,” he says. Glashütte Original produces up to 95 percent of each timepiece’s components; essentially everything except leather straps. Within the valley, the brand has two manufactories. It also runs a dial manufactory in Pforzheim in West Germany which creates intricate dials; each one often going through up to 90 stages before reaching completion.

Glashütte Original customers are invited to visit the main manufactory in Glashütte where all the movements are made and assembled. Here visitors can peer through glass windows to a number of departments and watch artisans at work inside casting prototypes using high-tech laser equipment, handcrafting components that are almost invisible to the human eye as well as polishing, bevelling and engraving. A fascinating stop on the tour is the assembly atelier where 10 of the most highly skilled watchmakers craft technical complications such as the grande cosmo and the flying tourbillon; a complex mechanism to improve timekeeping accuracy that is supported

from one side rather than by a bridge. It was first developed by German designer Alfred Helwig; a graduate of Glashütte’s school of watchmaking back in 1905. The many stages of the process to witness during a visit is almost overwhelming and the dedicated care and attention given to each step is second to none. Many stages are so intricate they require the use of microscopes or a special eyeglass loupe worn on one eye. It’s a place of intense concentration. Only the lucky visitors are allowed to enter workshop spaces and speak with the employees during a tour.

Some of the timepieces produced at the manufactory are the new models launched at this year’s Baselworld. Arguably the most exciting is Glashütte Original’s new chronograph movement. The Calibre 37-01 column wheel chronograph was designed and handcrafted entirely in Glashütte workshops and was debuted this year within the Senator Chronograph Panorama Date. The movement has also been fitted inside the new steel Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date. Gamard says: “A chronograph is a fundamental function of the watch industry. We decided to rethink it completely under

the motto ‘less is more’ to try and produce as few components as possible; to make the best functioning chronograph possible. It has 438 components, so when you say less is more, it’s still a very intricate piece.” He adds: “We’ve also added a number of other functions: power reserve; power reserve indicator; big date; and hour indicator, to make it an integrated, yet beautiful, movement.” Glashütte Original also this year launched the PanoMaticInverse, a timepiece featuring a duplex swan-neck fine adjustment, visible from the dial, that follows the mechanic PanoInverse. Gamard explains that the teams revel in the opportunity to create more and more functions and build increasingly enduring and beautiful timepieces. “There’s a sort of race for what can be done the best and who can do it,” he says. Drawing the comparison between watchmakers and musicians, Gamard explains: “It’s about aesthetics and emotion. Who needs music? Everybody and nobody. A watch is the same.” At Glashütte Original, watchmakers play an extremely important, if not the most important, role. Gamard reveals that it takes 3,000 hours to first become a watchmaker and between 10 and 15 years to attain the skills needed to create a complicated piece such as a minute repeater. Training is ongoing and the brand is committed to finding new talent by offering free courses to promising applicants at its watchmaking school in Glashütte.

Gaining an insight into Glashütte Original from the eyes of the watchmakers, the final results are testament to the many hours involved in crafting each piece. This knowledge, in turn, makes the timepiece even more special to the wearer. “A watch is historical. It tells a story about you,” says Gamard. “It’s a very intimate relationship directly on your skin and is certainly not just to tell time. To tell time nowadays people have smart phones. You use a watch to ref lect what you want to say, who you want to talk to and ultimately, who you are.”

In vogue Exploring the different faces of Dubai’s flourishing fashion scene

From designing to dressing, fashion for many of Dubai’s inhabitants, is the centre of their world. Each year countless style-savvy shoppers, up-and-coming designers and fashion followers flock to the emirate to immerse in a growing industry with plenty of potential. Internationally, the city’s credentials as one of the world’s foremost destinations for fashion and retail are on the rise. Top-tier brands are setting up shop in the heart of the city’s super-malls and filling shelves with the latest on-trend pieces. Industry buyers are increasingly including a stop in Dubai as part of world tours to scout for innovative new designers. Fashion royalty descend upon the emirate’s sandy shores to attend the latest VIP fashion events such as Chanel’s high-profile Cruise 2014 show. Even the city’s modelling industry has seen a boost with scores of international faces choosing to spend several weeks working in the emirate each year. Events are at the heart of this movement for many fashion devotees and the city’s calendar is packed with boutique openings, seasonal fashion shows, new collection launches, trunk shows and in-mall events. This month sees the return of locally founded seasonal showcase Fashion Forward (October 4 to 6) and the second edition of the Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience (October 30 to November 1) in collaboration with Vogue Italia. Ahead of these key events, four experts from different sides of the industry discuss Dubai as a fashion capital and explore why the emirate is increasingly attracting international interest.

The model booker Managing director of MMG Models, Gosia Golda, has her finger on the pulse of Dubai’s fashion scene. As a model booker and events manager, she’s up to date with what’s happening right now in the city and as a former model who has worked around the world she has an eye for global style trends. Golda explains that the local fashion scene has seen a dramatic turn in recent years. “There are multiple investments happening, such as Dubai Design District, which shows the government’s readiness to support the industry and nurture young designers from

1

the region,” she says. “Fashion brands are now realising the need to come into this market because of its wealthy consumers. This move has seen the industry commanding higher standards from the models we represent, while as a company, we are seeing larger and more sophisticated requests. The potential of Dubai and the region is only just being discovered; it is the tip of the iceberg.” For Golda, compared to the modelling scene in international fashion capitals, the industry in the UAE is quite different. In highly competitive Europe, there are

2

thousands of models who are generally required to be a certain height, weight and measurement. In Dubai, there is less pressure to be of a certain look and, as there is a smaller number of models, the industry has traditionally been less cut-throat. However, it is changing, Golda explains: “We have been seeing a greater demand to refresh the models’ faces in town and to offer international standards to keep brands confident in producing their work locally without any need to outsource. The modelling industry has, as such, become more competitive and has challenged us to invest more into our business model to remain a top player.” The modelling and fashion industries are inextricably linked and events are a key part of business for both. Attracting huge international attention and setting the bar for future events was Chanel’s Cruise 2014 runway show, which took place on an island off the coast of Dubai in May. The event, for which MMG Models booked the models, attracted fashion followers and celebrities from across the globe, upping the city’s style stakes. Golda adds: “These shows are necessary to showcase the diversity of the city and increase confidence in the local fashion industry.”

The fashion event founder A key date on Dubai’s event calendar is Fashion Forward. The brainchild of CEO Bong Guerrero, Fashion Forward is a biannual showcase of regional fashion and accessories designers. Essentially Dubai’s version of Fashion Week, the glittering event gives the best upcoming designers throughout the region a space to showcase their collections twice a year. It also serves as an opportunity to nurture the Middle East fashion industry. Guerrero first recognised the fashion potential of Dubai in the early 2000s, he explains; “We researched the regional landscape for a long time before finally launching Fashion Forward in April 2013. While it is not for me to comment on previous events, we made sure that it was representative of the region and mindful of its capabilities. We are promoting the best of designers that are from the Middle East, or have their business based here, giving them a platform upon which to achieve regional and international visibility and also to raise the profile of the Middle East and Dubai as a viable and relevant destination for buyers to come to on their international schedule.”

As well as hosting catwalk presentations and accessories displays, the event’s team organises Fashion Talks led by industry experts in a bid to foster debate and offer attendees a chance to learn from the masters. Guerrero adds: “We have been lucky enough to attract some of the leading experts and influencers in the global industry such as Fern Mallis, Creator of New York Fashion Week, Steven Kolb, CEO of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), international designers such as Reem Acra, Rabih Kayrouz and Ennio Capasa and social influencers such as fashion blogger BryanBoy. We hope to continue to build on this success season after season.”

Long before events such as Fashion Forward were launched, momentum in Dubai’s fashion industry was building steadily in the wake of several mall openings. From BurJuman in 1991 to Mall of The Emirates in 2005 and then the world’s largest mall, The Dubai Mall, in 2008, each opening gave the industry a much-needed boost. As these malls have dedicated luxury fashion areas, strong attention was drawn from international brands that, in turn, revolutionised Dubai as a city where labels reign supreme. “Dubai’s march into the global fashion scene has been energised with the opening of The Dubai Mall in November 2008. The mall’s soft opening was the largest of its kind in the history of global retail, with most of these store’s debuts or Middle East flagship outlets of global brands,” says a spokesperson for The Dubai Mall. With more than 1,200 retail stores under one roof, shoppers can find almost every brand they are looking for in the mall, all while exploring new names that they perhaps weren’t previously aware of. What’s more, in order to make space for even greater numbers of fashion brands, The Dubai Mall is in the midst of a onemillion-square-foot expansion.

This month, the mall hosts the second Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience, in collaboration with Emaar Properties and Vogue Italia. Aiming to elevate Dubai’s status as a global fashion hub, the three-day event welcomes VIP guests, celebrities and shoppers from across the globe while providing a platform for emerging designers. The Vogue Italia team works with 20 up-and-coming designers from across the region who also show their designs during the event. As well as fashion shows, there are in-store events and star-studded occasions, which last year welcomed Naomi Campbell and Donatella Versace among others. “The remarkable success of the event has further catalysed Dubai’s fashion retail sector, attracting discerning customers to our city and to The Dubai Mall,” the spokesperson says. “This year, we are expanding its scope to make it one of the world’s foremost luxury fashion and lifestyle events. It will drive creative dialogue, encourage more emerging and talented fashion designers to make their mark internationally by giving them an unbelievable platform to elevate their careers and further establish Dubai and The Dubai Mall’s credentials as the must-visit destination for fashion retail.”

The fashion designer With such high-profile events, budding fashion designers are drawn to Dubai in throngs. One established designer Rami Al Ali, founder of Rami Al Ali Couture, explains that the local fashion industry has completed changed since his arrival in the emirates. “When I first moved here in the late 1990s, it was the beginning of an era in the UAE whereby the fashion scene was starting to change from a Gulf taste to more of an international taste. Most of the clients at that time were shifting from tailoring houses to design houses so it was a good time for me to start my own label,” Al Ali says. “When

I left my home country of Syria in 1997 to travel to Dubai, it was never intended to be a permanent move but as Dubai is the closest international fashion hub to Syria, it seemed the most logical destination. Since then I have never looked back.” Al Ali’s success story is just one of many similar tales to be heard by those who took the leap and uncovered the potential of city. With the first stage of Dubai Design District scheduled for completion in early 2015, these types of triumphs can only increase as the momentum and quality of the city’s fashion industry booms and even greater opportunities follow.

Success story

From the dreams of a young boy, a hugely successful diamond jewellery company arose

As a child, Abdul Karim Mahallati was captivated by gold and diamond jewellery. By the time he was 16 years old, that fascination had turned into a passion. In 1968, dreams of one day owning his own jewellery business came true and Mahallati launched his own company. More than 40 years on, the firm he built has gone on to become one of the region’s most successful diamond jewellery retailers. “Mahallati Jewellery is renowned globally for the f lawless craftsmanship and the impeccable beauty of its

creations. My father took his infatuation with rare gems and translated it into collections of magnificent and unique pieces,” says Mehran Mahallati, owner, Mahallati Jewellery Group and son of founder Abdul Karim Mahallati. In the years that followed, the fledgling company soon expanded and a retail branch opened in Kuwait in 1981. A little over a decade later and the first Dubai boutique opened its doors in the Gold Souk in 1994. The same year, Mahallati Jewellery became the first to open diamond wholesale offices in the souk while another retail branch followed in 1995. Expansion in Dubai’s malls came in 2001 with a boutique in Wafi Mall. Since then, the family-run company

has gone from strength to strength with 10 outlets across the city, including stores in The Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates. “With over 40 years’ experience in the diamond jewellery industry, Mahallati Jewellery boasts indepth knowledge on styles and manufacturing techniques which have allowed us to become one of the foremost jewellery brands to appear from the Middle East,” says Mehran. “Coming from a region rich in jewellery heritage and a culture that has a true passion for jewellery, we at Mahallati live and breathe the lost art of jewellery-making. All of our jewellery is handmade, designed in-house and produced at our workshop in Thailand,” he adds. A range of collections are designed using diamonds, coloured stones and pearls while the stunning Mahallati Exclusive line caters to a discerning clientele. Pieces range from lavish designs with stunning diamonds and other precious stones to stylish jewellery for everyday wear. Among the remarkable examples to choose from are cocktail rings, pendants, statement cuffs and glittering earrings, each presented with sensational stones in a rainbow of colours.

Mehran explains: “Our clients are very exclusive and concerned with quality. Among them you will find members of royal families, international business people, diplomats from around the world and rare jewellery collectors. “Buying jewellery is an extremely personal experience and each item bought offers a different representation of the wearer. As a result, we do not compromise when it comes to our jewellery and we maintain the utmost level of quality in our manufacturing and purchase of stones. We do not cut corners and so ensure the highest quality.” Creating each piece, the firm uses the skills of artisans with more 20 years’ experience in making jewellery. This means intricate items can be made according to innovative in-house designs. Each stone is then hand-selected to ensure a perfect fit with the piece. This ability to focus on attention to detail means the company can offer the option of tailor-making items to suit individual preferences. “Our ability to customise our jewellery swiftly and with ease allows us a competitive advantage over some of the bigger jewellery houses, without compromising on

design and quality. We can work directly with customers to bring their dreams to life, ensuring a true connection with the wearer and their jewellery. Our in-house designers are able to meet with clients to discuss design ideas, allowing them to be a part of the creation of their investment,” says Mehran. Looking to the company’s future, Mehran believes family values and a lasting commitment to quality are central to preserving the legacy his father left. “Crafting excellence is our company dictum and this is expressed in every aspect of the creation process. We are proud to have been able to maintain our level of integrity and consistency in the level of quality. “That is something we want to continue into the future and also to become the most trusted and reliable luxury jewellery brand in the Middle East. Our vision is to turn a local name into an international brand.”

It’s chilledout, beachfront shopping at its best with a select grouping of fashionable boutiques and internationally recognised stores set alongside the pristine coastline. A host of retail outlets are open at The Beach, with many more on the way throughout the rest of the year. The roster includes Dubaibased boutique Sauce-On Sea, beauty giant Sephora and world-famous lingerie store Victoria’s Secret. New additions include Italian designer Patrizia Pepe and luxury evening wear outlet Designers’ Club. All shops are open from 9am to midnight, daily.

Dining While five-star restaurants are a Dubai staple, The Beach caters to more relaxed tastes, with a selection of casual cafés and boutique-style eateries. There are a few sophisticated dining concepts such as House of Curry and La Cure Gourmand, but all maintain a relaxed, low-key feel that works

perfectly with this laid-back location. Don’t let the lack of Michelin stars put you off because this area offers a multitude of enticing culinary choices. Almost 30 restaurants are currently open and depending on the time of day, there are certain top draws that should be on everyone’s list. Canadian franchise Eggspectation has become renowned for its delectable breakfast menu. True to its name, egg dishes are the pièce de résistance of this trendy eatery, with the famous eggspectation omelette winning plaudits. It’s not all about the eggs, though, as the menu is extremely varied, with steak, pasta, salads, chicken, lobster and sandwich options on offer. For a delicious lunchtime snack, look no further than The Counter. Hailing from Los Angeles, and with bona fide celebrity credentials, (fans include Leonardo Di Caprio, Robert Downey Jr and Justin Timberlake), this premium burger restaurant invites guests to create their own burgers, choosing from an extensive menu with one “million possible combinations”, according to the staff.

Fans of fresh seafood and crab in particular, may like to enjoy an evening meal at Aprons and Hammers. As the name suggests, diners are offered aprons to wear, as the shell-cracking can get a bit messy, but it’s all good fun. While crab takes centre stage, there are plenty of clam and shrimp dishes also on offer, all oozing with flavour. Many of the restaurants at The Beach face the sea and the majority offer outdoor terraces where patrons can take in the sights and sounds of the water while they dine.

Open on Fridays and Saturdays from 6pm to 4am, prices start at AED50 for adults, while children under 10 years old go free. For a more traditional approach, Reel Cinemas incorporates a 10-screen indoor theatre with seven standard screens. Three Platinum Suites offer relaxing reclining seats and waiter service making this the Rolls Royce of cinema viewing. To keep children entertained, look no further than Kids’ Splash Pad, a mini waterpark for children below the age of 12. There is a number of public rooms housing showers, washrooms and toilets, which are free to use. However, to take advantage of the facilities, which include sunbeds, umbrellas and lockers, there’s a hire fee, which starts at AED25 a day for umbrellas, AED30 a day for lockers and AED50 a day for sunbeds. Because this spot is so beautifully landscaped, with walkways, seating areas and lawns, it has also become a popular stop for picnickers. In addition to al fresco diners, group fitness classes are held in this area and it’s not unusual to see exercise enthusiasts working out on the green.

Heaven scent Italian luxury brand Bulgari unveils Le Gemme, a new range of fragrances that is every bit as extraordinary as its jewellery WORDS BY

CAROLINE SCOTT

It’s been a time of great excitement and celebration at Bulgari of late. There have been celebrations for the brand’s 130th anniversary and, last year, the appointment of a new Jewellery Creative Director, Lucia Silvestri. While she may be reasonably fresh in the top job, Silvestri began her career with Bulgari aged just 18. “One of the first things I learned is to select and then acquire gems only if I could see a possible use for them, which means that in the very act of purchasing, before the design and realisation phases, I imagined compositions of colour and forms that suggested the pieces of jewellery they might become,” she says of her hands-on approach to gemstones. After years of working with the Bulgari brothers (Nicola and Paolo), Silvestri’s sense of taste is perfectly aligned with their vision – bold, chromatic combinations that surprise and stir – but she also brings a very feminine approach to every single design. That a piece of jewellery feels comfortable and sits elegantly on the skin is of paramount importance to her and it’s this sense of wearability that has characterised the brand’s scents up until now. “Much of the popularity of the existing Bulgari fragrances is that they are discreet and

easy to wear,” explains Valeria Manini, managing director of Bulgari’s fragrance division. The scents and jewellery were equally refined, but the former erred on the quiet and amiable side compared to the more audacious rings, necklaces and bracelets. As Manini explains, it was time for the fragrances to “reconnect with the bold side of Bulgari”. And so Le Gemme was born, an haute parfumerie range of six exquisite fragrances, each a “hymn to the colour, light and emotion of the stone it celebrates”. The line-up is as follows: Amarena (tourmaline), Ashlemah (amethyst), Calaluna (moonstone), Lilaia (peridot), Maravilla (citrine) and Noorah (turquoise). “These new fragrances have much more character and will appeal to the discerning clients who buy our Bulgari jewels, but perhaps couldn’t find a fragrance answer within our previous offering,” says Manini. These are punchy perfumes that will appeal to noses that know their notes. To some eyes, the colour combinations found in Bulgari jewellery are as extraordinary as they are beautiful and, in the same vein, these fragrances may smell unfamiliar to some. It’s this point of difference that makes them all the more magnificent.

T his exquisite range was of f icially launched at the Bulgari Resort in Bali, which sits 150 metres above the Indian Ocean on the Bukit peninsula. This farflung location was fitting for a collection that was inspired by both the historical journeys and meanings of coloured gemstones and also the strong spiritual connection that individuals have with them. As gemologist Pamela Johananoff said at the unveiling: “Gemstones have been an integral part of our lives since the beginning of time.” Described as six “travel notebooks”, they

tell a spellbinding olfactory tale of ancient traditions and beliefs. Noorah, which is based on turquoise, will have particular resonance in the Middle East. An Oriental scent with a ‘cheerful’ character, it boasts galbanum, cardamom, iris, tobacco, oak and vanilla among its notes. The resulting blend suggests gingerbread, crystallised dates and even nargile, the scents of the Silk Road travelled by Marco Polo. The Le Gemme collection has been three years in the making and was a special project from start to finish, explains Manini. “It was very important that we studied each gem. We worked with a therapist and historians to understand and capture the power of the gems and then we delivered these findings to the perfumers.” Bulgari only worked with master perfumers for this project and, in the first instance, approached a group of around eight; an early idea was to have different scents created by different people. Roughly 150 fragrance ideas

came back to them, “but the best were all by one person,” says Manini. The nose who had floored them with her fragrances was Daniela Andrier, a prolific perfumer responsible for the Prada fragrances and also some very unusual olfactory masterpieces, such as Untitled by Maison Martin Margiela and Marni Eau de Parfum. “She was so talented in understanding the depths of what we wanted. She was consistent, but different, focusing on each emotion, for example, amethyst is a gem of spirituality and meditation.” Interestingly, Andrier was the only female among the panel of perfumers who had been asked to work on Le Gemme. “I think her being a woman was the key, because she had an emotional intuition,” says Manini. “Andrier herself isn’t so sure and believes that her contribution

to the project was about more than just her gender. “It’s more about who I am. I am a happy mother and wife and this contributes to my work.” This sense of optimism radiates from each of the fragrances she created. Despite this being one of the most expensive projects she’s ever worked on, in terms of raw materials, she doesn’t believe in ‘good’ or ‘bad’ fragrances. “It’s very personal. Any fragrance is beautiful on a woman as long as she is happy to wear it. Perfume is first and foremost a relationship with oneself. The imaginative world it brings to life is entirely composed of emotions which are unique to every one of us.” Andrier began the creative process by focusing on the colour of each stone and the ancestral beliefs associated with it. She created all six fragrances in the space

of one month and then spent the next year finessing them. “If you feel inspired, then writing the formula comes quickly.” Before becoming a perfumer, Andrier studied philosophy, which she feels informs her choice of notes. It’s difficult to think of a better person to take us on this new olfactory trail. For Manini, the new fragrances mark only the beginning. She says: “These particular gemstones correspond to the creation of Bulgari, but we haven’t reached precious stones such as sapphires and rubies yet. We will continue the journey.”

A tale of two cities Exciting developments in Dubai and Abu Dhabi usher in a new chapter in the UAE’s success story Words by

Catherine Langley

For over two thousand years, the Gulf coast has been known as a gateway between east and west. From the fifth century when the Persian Royal Road served as a crossroads of communication, to the trading posts of the 19 th century, people have always converged here. However, despite its central location, the United Arab Emirates, as it became known following independence from the British in 1971, was considered a relative backwater as recently as 20 years ago. Today, following extensive reinvention plans in the two main cities, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the UAE is now a hub of breathtaking development. The former pearling and fishing villages are popular international destinations but, despite their shared history and simultaneous expansion programmes, these two buzzing metropolises have taken very different paths. Dubai is one of the world’s most popular visitor destinations and has become an ultra-modern melting pot of jaw-dropping manmade attractions and world-class events, while Abu Dhabi has adopted a more cultural approach, establishing itself as an international centre for the arts as well as an emerging centre for business and leisure. Here, Concierge looks at this tale of two very different UAE cities.

Dare to dream Anyone who has ever so much as searched for Dubai online will be aware of the city’s record-breaking developments from Burj Khalifa – the world’s tallest building – to The Dubai Mall, the largest shopping mall on the planet. Lively, diverse and filled with record-breaking achievements, it certainly is the f lashiest of the seven cities that make up the UAE and, unless you’re a hardened sceptic, it’s hard not to be impressed. In a little over four decades,

1

Dubai has become one of the world’s most modern, innovative and technological cities, attracting investors and workers from over 200 countries. This rapid rise has been ref lected in the city’s recent successful bid to host Dubai Expo 2020. While news of the successful bid was announced with typical Dubai fanfare – fireworks erupting at Burj Khalifa and public holidays declared for all – what the expo actually means for the city is a little bit more difficult to define. Most analysts believe it will boost the city’s already thriving tourism industry, which currently boasts a handsome 11 million visitors a year, as well as reinvigorating other areas of the economy, such as real estate. “The impact on travel and tourism will be significant,” says Kinda Chebib, research analyst for Euromonitor in London. “Dubai Expo 2020 is expected to attract more than 25 million visitors, 70 percent of whom will be travelling to the city to attend; the largest number of international visitors ever reached through an expo.”

While Dubai Expo 2020 doesn’t quite have the kudos of the Olympics or the FIFA World Cup, there’s no denying that the sixmonth-long exhibition of trade, innovation and products from around the world will certainly put the global spotlight back on Dubai, further reinforcing its position as the Middle East’s business and tourism hub. Added to this, an impressive citywide expansion project, estimated at more than US$8 billion, is currently underway. The mammoth 120 hectare Safari Park in Al Warqa will open to the public next year and house more than 1,000 animals, while plans are also on track to build the Dubai Wetland Centre that will include a museum and visitor centre in the existing Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary. Another remarkable project is the Mini World Park that will include Dubai icons such as Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab and is expected to the be largest park of its kind in the world. Ultimately, the end goal is to create a lasting tourism legacy that the UAE will benefit from for many years to come.

Capital plans Change is afoot in Abu Dhabi. Having long been overshadowed by its glitzier neighbour, Dubai, the UAE’s capital is coming into its own, emerging as the Middle Eastern hub for the arts. With year-round exhibitions and major international art venues planned, Abu Dhabi is determined to make itself a world-class cultural destination, channelling the likes of London, New York and Paris as inspiration. “The Government of Abu Dhabi is going forward with big, art-related projects,” says Ahmed Saleh Al Yafei, founder of Abu Dhabi Art Hub, a live-work space for artists that hosts art programmes and provides studio space for art-related companies to occupy. “In the coming years, this will put Abu Dhabi on the map in the art world,” he adds. Al Yafei is, of course, referring to ambitious plans announced in 2007 to build a museum complex, Saadiyat Cultural District, on Saadiyat Island off the coast of the city. This surge of interest in art is nothing new in the UAE, as Dubai has boasted an art fair, Art Dubai, for several years now and global auction house Christie’s opened its own office in the city in 2005. However, the difference is that Abu Dhabi has managed

SHARJAH: CITY OF HISTORY

4

While Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the two best-known emirates, Sharjah, the third largest city in the UAE and a historical hot spot, boasts a multitude of attractions for the more intrepid of visitors. A range of museums are on offer, including the Sharjah Science Museum, the Sharjah Archaeology Museum and the Sharjah Natural History Museum. Sharjah Heritage Area near the city’s main corniche is also a must for culture aficionados. Here you’ll find Al Hisn Fort, the former residence of Sharjah’s ruling family and a masterpiece of old Arabic architecture, as well as the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation. Meanwhile, for retail therapy, head to The Blue Souk, which houses more than 600 shops that sell everything from electrical goods to traditional jewellery and antique artefacts.

to attract world-famous galleries and the city’s iconic Saadiyat Cultural District will host branches of The Louvre, scheduled to open in 2015 and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, due to open its doors in 2017. It will also be the base for the highly anticipated Zayed National Museum in 2016. Louvre Abu Dhabi is already accumulating its own permanent collection with other exhibits on loan from French museums including the Musée du Louvre, Musée d’Orsay and Centre Pompidou, while Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is set to display a varied selection of global art, as well as

playing host to educational programmes with a particular focus on Middle Eastern contemporary art. The Zayed National Museum has a local theme with seven permanent gallery displays inspired by the long history, heritage and culture of the UAE. The Saadiyat Cultural District has quickly become the epicentre of Abu Dhabi’s expanding art and culture. Once finished, the high-profile museum projects will be an important boost to the city’s name, creating a cultural attraction unmatched in the region and with few rivals anywhere else in the world. 7

Sitting on the banks of Dubai Creek, next to a gate bearing the name ‘Obaid Bin Juma Bin Suloom’, a shipyard buzzes with activity as a small army of workers keeps busy around a magnificent wooden structure. Each artisan is fully absorbed with the task at hand. One toils away, stationed next to a pile of enormous teak wood logs and vigorously saws the gigantic trunks, before another boat-builder takes over to tirelessly plane the planks until they are perfectly smooth and flat. The polished pieces are then carried to the skeleton of an enormous wooden dhow, where they are hammered into the imposing structure using long, thick metal nails. Such a sight is a rare occurrence in modern-day Dubai and offers a glimpse of a distant past, long before the advent of today’s luxurious lifestyle and the rise of the city’s futuristic landscape. It is reminiscent of a time when life took a much slower pace and when local tribes looked to the sea for survival. For centuries, traditional wooden boats known as sanbuk brought back fresh fish to feed the local tribes that gradually settled along the coast. Soon, these early settlements of Dubai and Abu Dhabi became thriving ports and dhows were used to carry a variety of local wares across oceans to India, China and East Africa. In summer, shu’i boats carried courageous divers out to the Gulf’s oyster banks where they searched the sea’s dark floor for precious pearls. To this day, whether ferrying wares around the world or slicing through the ocean in competitions, the dhow is a familiar sight in Dubai.

Dhows were built to last and their engineering has benefited from centuries of seafaring ingenuity. Materials were originally imported from surrounding countries. Teak used for the keel and masts was brought from India, rope came from Zanzibar while the sail canvas was sourced from Bahrain and Kuwait. Today, the wood used tends to come from Malaysia, India, or Pakistan while iron and pins used to connect the great planks are available in Dubai. The dhow construction process differs from the western model of firstly creating

a framework before combining it with the hull planking. Instead, dhow building in this part of the world begins with the stem and stern posts, followed by the unfinished hull planks, usually made from teak and held in place with supporting ribs or templates. The internal reinforcing framework is then introduced once the hull nears completion. Hundreds, sometimes thousands, of holes are handdrilled into the frame to avoid splitting the wood and long nails in oiled fibre secure the planks to the outer shell.

Local builders spend many years learning the craft, which is handed down the generations. For Mohammed bin Obaid bin Juma bin Suloom, one of the very last dhow-building masters, his profession is a way of life. “It is more than a business, it’s part of our family tradition and our great grandfather’s legacy,” he says as he shows old black-and-white photographs of his family. In one of them, his father, dressed in the traditional kandora, smiles as he stands next to a small fishing boat. As bin Suloom scans historical photographs of the old buildings with wind towers along the creek, he recalls how his family’s business grew alongside the evolution of Dubai itself. “In 1953, my father set up shop in Al Ras where he started building small boats, or abras, which he used to transport passengers across the creek between Deira and Bur Dubai. He then moved to Garhoud where

he went on to construct fishing boats and then large cargo ships with a capacity of 150 tons, which was quite a feat at the time.” In 1972, a chance meeting with UAE royalty saw bin Suloom’s father obtain his official trade licence as a dhow builder. “The ruler of Dubai, HH Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, was out on a regular patrol in the desert when he found my father working in an empty space in the Hamriya area. He was sawing wood with the help of a small power generator. Our then ruler was so affected by the what he saw, that soon after he ordered that my father was given electricity and running water, as well as ownership of the land,” explains bin Suloom. A thriving business followed and just like his father, bin Suloom grew up to love this job. He recalls: “At first, I was reluctant to learn. I just wanted to play football after school, but my father insisted that my brother and I come to the workshop

straight from class. I have loved it ever since and when my father was too busy to take me to the shipyard, I would go by myself.” Building on his father’s legacy, bin Suloom hopes to add a new accomplishment to the family’s proud history. In 1978, his father built Emirate 1, a 300-tonne cargo-ship that is still beautifully preserved to this day. Following on from this, bin Suloom is embarking on an ambitious venture to build the biggest wooden cargo ship in history, with a capacity of 4,500 tonnes. The project will take up to 30 people, working six days a week for over 18 months, to reach completion. For the build, its engineers will resort to traditional boat construction techniques based on experience and intuition. Bin Suloom shrugs off the idea of using any architectural plans and sketches, saying: “I don’t need them. It’s all in my head. Instead, we will build a small prototype and take it out to the water, in order to test its buoyancy and fine-tune its balance, then we can move on to finalising the bigger version.” Bin Suloom’s emotional connection to the craft of dhow building is quite clear, as he adds: “When finished, this will be a gift to HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, so that our family name can live on and our country can be credited with one more achievement.”

Standing at the crossroads of east and west the UAE occupies a unique position and, as such, is an incredibly diverse destination. From the burnt orange hues of the majestic dunes to the golden arcs of pristine coastline that surround both city and desert, this is a nation of extraordinary contrasts. The story of the emirates' development is one defined by boundless vision and a pioneering spirit that have seen humble fishing villages transformed and futuristic cities rise from the sand

With each passing year, Dubai grows ever more varied and vibrant. From an eclectic selection of innovative architecture to a thriving arts and social scene, the city is steadily growing into one of the world's most exciting destinations. At its heart is Dubai Creek, an enduring symbol of the historic roots which are very much a part of the city's future. Here, fishing and dhow-trading days gone by are recalled as traditional boats ply their trade along the creek's waters. Wind tower architecture of the old quarter, Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, lines the banks and offers visitors a glimpse of Dubai down the decades. Look back across the water and the city's modern skyline provides a stark contrast. The world's tallest building Burj Khalifa towers over a host of modern marvels which have come to define any present notion of the city

74

75

Abu Dhabi presents a rich kaleidoscope of contrasts that blends the country's past with a grand vision for its future. An architectural marvel in the UAE capital, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque stands tall amidst a backdrop of towering skyscrapers, while traditional dhows offer a glimpse of the past as they sail across the pristine blue waters of Abu Dhabi. Built in 1891, the historic Al Jahili Fort in the emirate's second city of Al Ain is a cultural highlight. After carefully restoring the fort, it today houses a permanent exhibition on Sir Wilfred Thesiger's journey across the Rub al Khali (The Empty Quarter) desert, preserving past memories for generations to come

On a high note Classical music stars, both international and homegrown, are flocking to the city thanks to the efforts of Dubai Concert Committee

There is a sea change taking place on Dubai’s culture and arts scene, driven by a common desire to foster an engaging artistic offering that can be enjoyed by visitors and the local community alike. Galvanised in part by work taking place to prepare for Dubai Expo 2020, a host of new developments and initiatives such as Dubai Opera District and Dubai Design District are set to provide new homes for the talent already nurtured in the city and beyond. Established events such as Art Dubai, Design Days Dubai and Dubai International Film Festival have in recent years gone from strength to strength as cultural matters come increasingly high on the agenda. It is against this backdrop that Dubai Concert Committee (DCC) has flourished. A not-forprofit organisation, it is made up of committee members who give freely of their time to bring classical musicians to Dubai. Each dedicated volunteer shares a passion for the art form and it is that drive that has seen DCC attract a host of big-name classical music stars to Dubai. The idea for a concert committee first came from its original members and was supported by the then Emirates CEO Sir Maurice Flanagan. Considered a worthwhile enterprise, DCC was launched under the patronage of HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al Maktoum. The first concert, from Dutch pianist Martijn van den Hoek, took place in January 1996. In the time since, DCC has gone on to organise more than 180 concerts for over 100,000 music fans in Dubai. In 2011, the organisation’s efforts were recognised with a Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum Patron of the Arts Award.

A special dedication The Committee’s members have changed over the years. It currently consists of Brigitta Dagostin, chairperson, Mark Hackett, treasurer and Irina Ginns, who looks after communications. Some are professional musicians, such as Dagostin, who has been an opera director and previously staged productions in Germany and Austria. DCC treasurer Hackett explains how he became involved in the classical music scene. “Those of us of a certain age enjoyed music on seven and 12-inch circular pieces of vinyl. I discovered my first classical album by mistake. A well-worn Beethoven’s 5th Symphony accidentally misfiled in my father’s collection of Beatles, Rolling Stones and other cool albums. I loved it. “The same is true of coming to Dubai. I stumbled across Dubai Concert Committee by accident. What amazed me most was the fact that DCC was run by volunteers, by people with a passion for classical music, who want to share that with the Dubai community. I went to my first concert and was so impressed that shortly after I volunteered as treasurer.” He adds: “Being able to see the organisation grow is one of the things that makes

the volunteering experience so special. To be able to contribute to decision making, whether it’s the choice of artists to invite, through to bigger decisions such as changing venues or working with new partners, it is very exciting.” For Ginns, a lifelong passion for classical music began with her talented mother. She explains: “For me, classical music is a very special and personal matter. Raised in a family with a professional musician, I was exposed to live music from birth. My mother, who sadly passed away at a young

age, was a choir master, beautiful soprano and a piano player. She took me to classical concerts when I was little and she organised parties at home. I remember hearing a grand piano being played and people singing from my cot. Another one of my early memories is beautiful silvery sounds of a flute in the open air of our garden at dusk and the way all of nature seemed to quieten and listen to those magical sounds. “Ever since my childhood, classical music has been present in my daily life. I listen to it on the radio all the way through my day, in the office, in my car or at home. None of the recorded music has quite the same effect as a live concert. “Being directly involved in concert organisation means I work closely with musicians. It can all become quite hectic. Once the concert starts, however, and you are listening

5

to live music, it all seems totally worth it. The next day you wake up in the morning and have this overwhelming feeling that the world is perfect.”

Music to our ears For each year’s programme, the committee seeks to cover a wide range of styles and artists. The result is a varied offering of composers, periods of music, selection of instruments and musicians from several countries. Performances range in scale from soloists to chamber orchestras and the period covered can be anything from the 12th to the 21st century.

“Dubai Concert Committee invites outstanding artists or those who are at the beginning of a world career, but we also receive around 500 applications each year from musicians looking to come and perform here. “Often the performers also give master classes to music students here in Dubai, which has been a very beneficial experience both for performers and young musicians,” says Ginns. Some recent highlights over the years include award-winning guitar two-piece Duo Transatlantique and The Scholtes Janssens piano duo from the Netherlands. Another successful two-man show came in the form of Calefax, a popular reed quintet. Last year, renowned recorder player Stefan Temmingh lit up the stage at the DUTAC theatre, Mall of the Emirates.

IN CONCERT There is a series of exciting DCC performances to choose from between now and the end of the year, including: October 17: Hungarian violinist Joseph Lendvay November 20: Dubai-born piano prodigy Arsha Kaviani Venue: One&Only Royal Mirage Price: Visit dcc.ae for ticketing information

“There has always been a vibrant, buzzing environment around the concerts as well as great anticipation and interest from the musical community. Over the years we have enjoyed and appreciated the support of Dubai Culture and the local consulates, embassies and business councils who are always proud to support musicians from their respective countries. It has become a tradition to invite a guest speaker to open our concerts and usually this would be one of our sponsors, or an ambassador or consul general. The opening speeches have given a wider resonance in the local community to our concert series,” says Ginns.

“There has always been a vibrant, buzzing environment around the concerts as well as great anticipation from the musical community”

Recently moved to a new home, One&Only Royal Mirage, new partner MPremiere has also come on board. The collaboration has helped attract an even higher caliber of musicians, such as renowned violinist Maxim Fedotov accompanied by pianist Galina Petrova, opera star Julia Novikova, famed pianist Eduard Kunz and The Alliage Saxophone Quintet who performed last month. Looking to future progression for DCC and classical music in Dubai, Ginns adds: “The absence of a full-scale venue in Dubai and our limited resources makes it currently impossible to bring orchestras or organise a music festival. We have met with Dubai Tourism on the new Opera House project and are looking forward to it opening as it will provide a purpose-built venue, hopefully also for classical music. We are hoping that the new music hall will provide the perfect setting for events on a larger scale and that this will give a boost to the music scene in Dubai.”

EXPERIENCE

A place to...

Explore natural wonders A dream-like landscape awaits visitors to Dubai Miracle Garden where vibrant blooms create a colourful collage

SEEDS OF CHANGE A second phase at the attraction will see the addition of a butterfly garden, aromatic garden with fragrant and medicinal plants from all over the world and an edible plants section where visitors can sample the abundant fruit and vegetables available

Amid the hustle and bustle of the city, hidden away from the towering skyscrapers and mega-malls, lies a charming floral oasis. One of the newest green additions to the local landscape, Dubai Miracle Garden is easily the most innovative. When the space was first conceived, a fresh approach to traditional notions of garden design was adopted and the result is fantastical floral forms in all shapes and sizes. The unexpected greets visitors at every turn, such as flowering pyramids in pink and orange hues and classic cars sprouting an array of buds. Bright blooms are woven around archways and a quirky canopy of rainbow-coloured umbrellas adds a unique touch. Among the tranquil winding paths that dissect great swathes of lush greenery is a host of horticultural gems. The futuristic garden is home to more than 45 million blooms with 45 different varieties of flower on show. An important aspect of the design is an incorporation of influences from the local area. This can be seen in the 18-metre-high floral Burj Khalifa and in a flowering UAE flag. The pièce de rÊsistance is a 13-metre-diameter clock, crafted from plants and flowers, which displays Dubai time.

Chef’s table Dubai’s Michelin-starred restaurant chefs discuss fine fare, standing out in the crowd and the future of the city’s culinary scene

In 1900, two French brothers, André and Edouard Michelin, wrote a manual for their clients detailing where best to take a rest stop and enjoy topquality cuisine when on the road. Fast forward 114 years and the tyre manufacturers’ annual Michelin Red Guide attains a global reach with editions across the world that are famed for setting the gold standard of gastronomic establishments. Year after year the publication awards the finest restaurants with Michelin stars. Just as an Oscar is considered to be the highest honour for actors and filmmakers, the presentation of a Michelin star to a restaurant can have profound effects on the careers and lives of the chefs who earn them. Granting stars is a lengthy and comprehensive process whereby highly qualified inspectors conduct secret reviews of a broad range of establishments. A variety of factors are considered including quality of cuisine, mastery of flavours, cooking technique, value for money and consistency. After deliberation, between one and three stars are awarded to restaurants deemed worthy. However, unlike an Oscar statuette, a star can also be taken away. For dedicated chefs, this translates into a commitment to the highest standards in order to uphold the prestigious award. In Dubai, there is a host of restaurants under the tutelage of chefs who have earned the sought-after accolade for their establishments. Concierge explores these elite dining destinations and gleans a fascinating insight from some of the chefs who have earned the respect of Michelin judges.

Dubai does not as yet have its own Michelin guide system to rate restaurants but the city has instead adopted a slew of top tier chefs from across the globe. From world-famous celebrity chefs such as Gary Rhodes and Marco Pierre White to gourmet legends like Vineet Bhatia, the first Indian chef to have received a star for his restaurant, the emirate attracts culinary masters from all fields. With so much choice, pushing boundaries is the key to standing out. Bhatia made local history when he opened Indego by Vineet at Grosvenor House in Dubai, the first fine-dining Indian restaurant in a five-star hotel in the UAE. “When we opened it was quite odd because it had never been done before. You could get good Indian food in Karama and Bur Dubai but not in five-star hotels. At first, everybody questioned me and said there’s no demand but it’s been eight and a half years now and it has done extremely well,” says Bhatia. His restaurant has in many ways set the benchmark for top-quality Indian cuisine in the city. The accomplished chef achieves this by experimenting with cutting-edge innovations, such as the 10-spoon taster platter which is currently under trial in Dubai,

1

while maintaining his signature tenacity of flavours, textures and colours. He adds: “I’ve always been very stubborn and have chosen the unbeaten path. You have to remember as a chef that you are feeding people’s egos and palettes and guests have to leave with some memories of your food. If you can give that, it will click with them and they come back.”

Bhatia developed this confidence, in part, after his restaurants in London and Geneva were awarded two Michelin stars. He says: “Once you receive an award, you see a certain kind of acceptance, internationally. You are recognised for creating cuisine of a level which is refined, sophisticated, very well crafted and presented, while keeping the substance intact. It gives you a boost as a chef to push further and put food on a plate that other chefs would be scared to because you’ve already proved yourself.”

Examples he gives include adding chocolate to savoury dishes and serving an olive chicken tikka dish with olive sorbet, rather than traditional chutneys or sauces, to create a juxtaposition between hot and cold tastes. While Bhatia f lies the f lag for Indian cuisine, Pierre Gagnaire is at the forefront of French fare that is, in his own words “facing tomorrow but respectful of yesterday”. Gagnaire has opened two culinary venues in the city at InterContinental Dubai Festival City. Reflets par Pierre Gagnaire is a fine-dining restaurant while newly opened Choix Patisserie & Restaurant Par Pierre Gagnaire is the celebrated chef’s first standalone pastry shop. In the early 1990s, Gagnaire’s St. Etiennebased restaurant was awarded three Michelin stars, the highest prize in the Michelin rating system. “The impact of the Michelin Guide is very important and inevitably creates a healthy competition. To have three stars and to keep them is key to promoting our credibility on the international side,” says Gagnaire. Describing the French restaurant’s spirit as rustic but chic, Gagnaire attributes his success to an uncontrollable curiosity for new ingredients and a zest for exploration,

combined with a carefully selected team of talented and experienced people. Another chef with Gagnaire’s three Michelin-star expertise is fellow French cook Yannick Alléno, who is the creator of gourmet restaurant STAY by Yannick Alléno at One&Only The Palm Dubai. Alléno’s first glimpse into the world of cooking came while watching his grandmother in the kitchen, who created innovative dishes such as ‘chicken in a bottle’, a tricky variation on a galantine whereby the bird is deboned and stuffed inside a bottle. Each of his restaurants features two signature

concepts: a communal table and a sumptuous pastry library with an exceptional dessert selection. “With STAY, I wanted to create a contemporary restaurant in a trendy and cosy environment,” explains Alléno. The introduction of a Dubai Michelin star classification system has long been rumoured but as yet remains unconfirmed. Bhatia says: “I think it will come eventually. You can probably eat in Dubai as well as you could in New York or London. It’s not quite the same level but it’s very high and I think every year will get better and better.”

Amongst Dubai’s many world-famous attractions lies a largely unexplored artistic quarter where understated industrial units belie a vibrant cultural scene waiting to be discovered. Al Quoz is brimming with art galleries, museums and studios as the creative space has grown in recent years to become Dubai’s main cultural hub. Artists gather here to present work and exchange ideas at around 20 galleries, which represent an eclectic mix of international styles and genres. A focal point of the artistic activity here is Alserkal Avenue, which occupies a one-block radius and is made up of myriad interconnected streets. Renowned exhibition spaces such as Carbon 12 Dubai, Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde and Green Art Gallery call Alserkal Avenue home while the area also boasts the first private museum in the area, Salsali Private Museum. Elsewhere, The Courtyard is an eclectic space where visitors can expect film screenings, art workshops and a weekly farmers’ and crafts market alongside regular exhibitions.

Dubai is awash with water sports to cool down Kite surfing This sport is so popular in the UAE that the government has allocated a number of special kite-surfing beaches that cater to enthusiasts including Jumeirah's Kite Beach and Jebel Ali Beach. When the wind picks up, kite surfers head to the popular spots to harness the power of the wind and reach speeds of up to 50 knots while performing jaw-dropping tricks. Paddle boarding When Gulf conditions are calm, paddle boarders take to the water. A number of areas prove particularly popular for the sport, such as around the world-famous Burj Al Arab and off the coast of Palm Jumeirah. Scuba Diving The UAE is a haven for underwater explorers and the coastal waters offer a variety of diving opportunities. Divers can uncover deep sea wrecks off the coast of Palm Jumeirah or explore coral reefs inhabited by hundreds of species of sea life in neighbouring emirate Fujairah.

This championship course was designed by Robert Trent Jones II.

My Dubai

Record-breaking polar explorer and adventurer Adrian Hayes shares his city highlights

}

1

1 UAE desert 2 Emirates Dubai Rugby Sevens

I first came to Dubai in 1995 from the UK and, apart from three years away for work, it has been my home or at least my main base, since then. My favourite time of year is mid-October to mid-April when we can indulge in all the great outdoor activities that the country offers. The sporting facilities in Dubai really are second to none and for someone like myself, for whom fitness is an integral part of their work, I couldn’t be in a better place. At the weekend, unless there is a big sporting event scheduled such as a triathlon, marathon or bike race, I usually ride with the Dubai Roadsters, a group of up to 200 people who join in 80-kilometre or 120-kilometre group rides on Friday mornings. When I’m not travelling for work, most weekends I will be up in the mountains of Musandam, or Hatta, either rock climbing or hiking with a good group of friends. I have fond memories of climbing and camping trips in the mountains and of a large crowd around a fire.

When I have friends and family over here to stay I always take them out to the desert, but it’s when people come out to the mountains that they’re really taken aback. Dubai was a ‘happening’ country back in the 1990s and it still is today. The Emirates Dubai Rugby Sevens is still, in my opinion, the best event in the year. It’s very reasonably priced and has a top-class formula for simply making people feel good. It’s the best party in the world. I admire the ‘can do’ attitude that runs through the society in Dubai; it’s infectious. In early 2007, I set up my company as a professional adventurer, speaker and business coach. I cannot, in all honesty, say I would have ended up doing the same thing had I remained in the UK. I travel constantly worldwide for my work so Dubai’s central location between Europe, Asia and Africa is very handy for someone who’s always on an aircraft. So, all in all, Dubai has been very good to me.

“I admire the ‘can do’ attitude that runs through the society in Dubai; it’s infectious”
