—— The city’s most anticipated fashion event is back.

Returning for its eighth edition from October 20 to 23, Fashion Forward Dubai (FFWD) will take centrestage at Hai d3 at Dubai Design District (d3).

The latest installment of this popular twice-annual event will showcase a total of 31 designers, with five labels making their FFWD debut this season.

Also new this season, thanks to its continued success in providing a forum for the region’s rising talent, is the launch of EPIC (Empowerment Programme through Industry Collaboration) that provides valuable business development opportunities to regional fashion talent through a series of exciting initiatives. THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT ——— Coupling its traditional sensibility with a penchant for on-trend collaborations, Swarovski’s history is as innovative as it is intriguing. Concierge talks exclusively with brand CEO Robert Buchbauer

From couture gowns and designer accessories bedecked in brightly coloured crystal stones to decorative crystal lighting and multi-faceted figurines, Swarovski has infiltrated every creative avenue from fashion to jewellery and beyond. “Our material can be put into so many different contexts, each time becoming an integral part of the design so we actually have growth possibilities into many directions when it comes to product categories,” says Swarovski’s enigmatic CEO Robert Buchbauer. It’s an all-encompassing that statement that not many brands can, so successfully, lay claim to. Yet, with over 120 years experience in mastering crystal cutting, it’s a fact that rings true for the Austrian house.

The company was founded on Daniel Swarovski’s vision to create ‘a diamond for everyone’. “He invented a mechanical machine that could cut crystal stones in never seen before quality and quantity,” explains Buchbauer. “This was the ideal combination as he was able to bring down the price of sought-after stones while at the same time increase their quality. This premium condition has always been important to the manufacturers that use our stones, because they in turn need to use a standardised and consistent quality for their products to then be considered high quality as well.”

Staying true to the brand’s fundamental values has been instrumental to the company’s triumph. “The whole history of the company is about reinventing itself without abandoning its original principles.

And at the core of Swarovski is cut crystal.” Buchbauer reveals it was the expansion into jewellery that really helped the business grow to today’s global level. “The jewellery required a lot of experimenting and there was internal resistance when we first launched finished jewellery products because some members felt this would be in direct competition with our customers’ businesses and the products they used to create with our stones.

“However the demand of the market proved to be too strong and we first launched our own collections through third party distribution, which became very successful. This in turn helped create a new jewellery market which our customers also benefitted from. Fashion jewellery became a category in its own right with proprietary designs that were far beyond just imitation of real jewellery. This encouraged a huge growth in the jewellery industry overall and the result made everybody happy.”

As the great great grandchild of Daniel Swarovski, and the fifth generation to helm company, Buchbauer reveals that, as with many family businesses, this sort of ownership is not without its challenges.

At a time when many premium brands underestimated the world of digitalisation, Swarovski, through Buchbauer, took an early lead in e-commerce opening their digital operations in 2001.

“At the time I had a lot of internal advisors telling me this is going to fail, but this new venture brought out a lot of ambition with our

partners. Today we have both our online business, which happens to be a very profitable, and we have a growing base of independent retailers running our mono-brand stores.” This base impressively now includes nearly 2,700 boutiques around the world and 8,000 multibrand retailers.

Delving further into the complexities of a family-run business, Buchbauer says: “The older the company gets the more you have to professionalise its organisation as it passes from one generation to the next. I would say from the first generation to the second, it was an organic progression. We had a founder and three adult sons, who grew naturally into the company actively participating in growing the business from, more or less, day one. And then from the third generation to the fourth and now the fifth, each stage has been a different story.”

Having progressed over time to a business-to-consumer model, generational change is not the only evolution Buchbauer is projecting for the future. “There are a few developments that will again change and shape the way we’re doing business, specifically in consumer goods. The industry is gravitating towards megacities. It’s been said there’s going to be about 450 really big cities in the world that represent a ‘make it or break it’ potential and this trend is probably 9

going to change our distribution model to a large extent as we hone our focus more on the wealth and potential of these megacities.”

No doubt Swarovski’s knack for forming relationships with creatives from the industry’s upper echelons, not to mention its ever-expanding portfolio of arresting collaborations, will continue to see the brand march forwards towards further global domination. Currently it’s the fall brand campaign, a striking series of eight portraits shot by talented snapper Tim Walker, that has jewellery aficionados doing a double-take. A collective of fashion heavyweights, lead by catwalk darling Karlie Kloss, Swarovski’s newest ambassador, Brilliant Inspiration sees top influencers such as designers Jason Wu, Mary Katrantzou and Charlotte Olympia Dellal lend their artistic charms to Swarovski’s latest season of sparkle.

Commenting at the time of Kloss’ appointment, Buchbauer said: “We wanted to bring our brand to the next level but also the next generation — we thought that Karlie would be a perfect match.

She represents a certain openness and a new philosophy. She is very fashionable and very beautiful, which is key when you talk about the next generation of consumer — specifically, powerful women who should become our long-term customers.”

The latest jewellery Autumn/Winter 2016 collection, entitled Crystal Galaxy, takes its inspiration from vivid cosmic nights and iridescent space icicles. Creative Director Nathalie Colin explains: “It’s the perfect theme to play with light and shadow and to create some pieces exuding this mysterious appeal of the galaxy, either in a figurative or in a more abstract way. TOOLS OF THE TRADE ——— MadeByNative founder Lewis Adams reveals the art behind the brand’s bespoke leather goods

Watching leather craftsman Lewis Adams at work is oddly mesmerising. He handles soft, supple leather with deft ease and takes his time to visualise every fold and crease before measuring and cutting the fabric. With each stroke, a new shape is born and the finishing saddle stitching, a signature touch, adds a wonderful burst of colour. Adams, founder of the homegrown leather goods company MadebyNative, is hard at work in his new atelier at The Courtyard in Al Quoz. Since launching the brand two years ago, MadebyNative has caught the attention of discerning clientele in the UAE as well as international luxury brands for its refreshingly honest approach to design that champions a backto-basics creative ethos.

MadebyNative’s product range includes functional wallets, premium bags and travel totes as well as elegant lifestyle accessories. Signatures such as the Rowan watch roll that houses treasured timepieces, the Jay folding card case wallet and the Branwen tote bag all stand out for their versatile yet functional aesthetics. Every product from the growing range is handmade to order and takes about three weeks, on average, to produce, adding to its bespoke charm.

“I’ve always had a love for well-made products and heritage eccentricities. Growing up in a small, rural farming village in Yorkshire Dales in England, I quickly became used to working with my hands on farms as well as with horse saddles and equestrian tacks. The heritage of crafting leather equestrian items has always been with me but this

later progressed to me training with horse saddlemakers and discovering more about the techniques behind handcrafted products. This, combined with my enthusiasm for minimal and in some cases zero environmental impact, helped form my vision for MadeByNative.

“All the leather we use are by-products of the meat packing industry meaning that animals are not harmed for their hides. In addition to this, we use an ancient vegetable tanning process that is native to Tuscany in Italy. My idea was to create a brand of quality leather goods that last,” explains Adams.

After studying art and design at university, Adams tested and honed his creative skills over the years by designing and sewing his own fashion items, studying typography and developing photographic film before finding his true calling as a leather goods craftsman.

“I travelled to England and Europe several times over a period of a few years to seek out the best makers and learn from them, seeing how they managed to build a brand and retail store using just a small craft workshop. Europe has fantastic craftsmen who are specialised in a range of mediums including pottery, clay, leather and metal. These people have been my inspiration and the ones I consider my mentors.

“While working in my previous job in Dubai as a brand consultant, I began to make different leather items in my spare time. I would experiment with various products and then gift them to

friends and family. The feedback and support was so encouraging that I decided to eventually change career paths to pursue my passion as a craftsman and develop my own unique brand,” says Adams.

Luxury car manufacturer Maserati recently chose Adams as one of 100 exceptional craftsmen and artists around the world for its premium hardcover book, One of 100: Maserati and Zegna. Custom products for Maserati are also in the works, while other recent collaborations with Microsoft and Design Days Dubai have put Adams in the spotlight as a craftsman of note in the country. While the accolades and applause roll in, Lewis Adams remains focused on producing quality leather goods that stand the test of time.

“I always put a lot of attention and effort into designing new products and client orders so that every MadebyNative piece is special.

“As a craftsman I tend to focus a lot on the small details and often notice all the tiny things most people miss in a product. My fascination with traditional techniques has enabled me to create a brand that ref lects classic heritage but with a modern twist. For me, it really is a form of art and a labour of love.”

There’s an inextricable link between Islam and writing. This connection stems from the fact that calligraphy was the primary means of preserving the Qur’an. Found amongst mosques, books, tombs, architecture, paintings – Arabic calligraphy has left a unique visual stamp in every conceivable corner of the Islamic world.

Masterfully inscribed on coins, paintings, mosque interiors and ancient architecture, Arabic calligraphy is a treasured creative form that bridges the gap between religion and the art of writing.

Requiring decades of practice to truly master, there’s a unique sense of serenity attributed to this traditional art as calligraphers thoughtfully contemplate each inky stroke. “For me it is like a form of meditation and inner exploration. It is also a language that represents many concepts in an abstract and verbal way” explains artist Majid Alyousef.

It was an early passion that spurred on his fascination in calligraphy. “I started drawing and painting at the young age of eight, although over the years it was my interest in calligraphy that really flourished. I went on to gain a BA degree in Fine Arts and a MA degree in Interaction Design and during my career I’ve worked with several internationally recognised branding and advertising agencies.”

Now working out of his studio in Dubai, Alyousef says a typical day begins with an assessment of on-going projects and requests. “Usually it starts with a quick review of the work currently under construction, be it paintings or sketches. It’s good to take notes with a fresh eye early in the day. Then I do some warm up lettering and calligraphy exercises before moving on to the tasks for that day.

Although a traditionalist in some respects, in many others Alyousef is no doubt keen to keep his style innovative. “For the classical artworks, though I use contemporary tools, I usually

follow the traditions of the old masters keeping the techniques similar. Then for modern styles I do more intuitive and improvised sketches in the first stages – although the final art piece is far from improvised and would be more of a studied result.”

From calligraphy paintings to typography consultancy and type-face design the Saudi artist offers a variety of interesting services. Among them includes the ‘Arabisation’ of existing foreign brands. Alyousef explains designing an Arabic logotype in this way “involves a visual analysis of the typographic style used in the original brand mark, followed by a design in Arabic that visually matches the logo”.

While he enjoys experimenting with contemporary styles, for those who are just starting to explore the art, he suggests starting with more classical types. “Most calligraphers, especially beginners, like modern styles that look good, but are not extremely difficult to master.Young artists tend to learn these styles to make pieces in a short time with a lot of creative flexibility. Classical calligraphy is difficult, but to be really good, in any modern style, you have to start with the classics to understand the basic rules of aesthetics and then develop your own style.” He also stresses that it’s important to keep evolving as an artist. “I think the artist should also be an intellectual person, so beside continuous practicing, reading and learning, the theory and philosophy of art is important. There is always something new to learn and discover, and that should be the attitude of an artist.”

The word ‘calligraphy’ originates from the Greek meaning ‘beautiful writing’.

Centuries of expertise have been handed down the generations to preserve the ancient art of calligraphy.

Approaching the science behind the art, Alyousef explains that, for him, essentially it comes down to three key elements – geometry, a sense of vision and neuro-aesthetics.

“Geometry is a very critical part of composition and the attractiveness of geometrical shapes is directly related to the way the brain perceives them. The visual process in the brain comes from two main components; the first one defines lines and contours and the other is concerned with colour and tonality. Neuro-aesthetics, on the other hand, is the study of aesthetics from a scientific perspective. I use some of these principles in order to create compositions using paints. When looking at a painting our eyes only take in small segments of the painting and then the brain stitches them together to form the whole experience. In reality we can’t recognise more than five centimetres of any object we look at any given moment. But, as the eye scans the canvas area capturing its many segments, it allows us to put the image together and understand the subject in that particular painting. In my artwork I try to shuffle the stages of that process and rearrange multiple segments in more intricate forms. I also play with the spacing and positioning of objects – the result is very interesting.”

Traditionally, Islamic calligraphy is drawn using a carved reed pen and there are several styles within the genre, each with distinct shapes and characteristics. Mastering this kind of calligraphy means mastering the Arabic alphabet which consists of a script of 28 letters

distinguished by a dot or dots placed above or below the letter.

Discussing the similarities, as well as the differences between traditional Arabic calligraphy and other mainstream forms, Alyousef tells us: “the main similarity is the skill. Arabic, Latin and Chinese calligraphy require a lot of patience and practice. Yet the differences can clearly be seen in the way you acquire that skill. Arabic calligraphy needs a lot of control when moving the slanted cut pen on the paper and a lot of retouching and refining is done to complete an art piece, in Latin a steady hand is required but some areas do need quick and sharp moves to achieve the desired form, and usually they use broad straight cut pens. While in Chinese and Japanese calligraphy the artist uses a delicate brush held almost perpendicularly to create strokes with quick sharp moves.

“Looking at my paintings, the most recognisable characteristic is the strong motion gestures that is suggested by lines. I focus on defining the contour of letters and showing their unique forms with lines, this component works in harmony with the other important component, which is colour and coloured spaces.”

Constantly evolving, while calligraphy has been adopted and embraced in many modern day aspects, from logo creation to graffiti-style paintings, its unbreakable link back to religion and ancient expression remains a significant part of its enduring appeal.

BREAKING BOUNDARIES ——— Eager to further establish the region’s emerging art and design scene, the second edition of Dubai Design Week returns for what’s expected to be another successful year

Over six bustling days, the second season of Dubai Design Week looks set to wow regional and international visitors and exhibitors with a captivating programme packed with over 100 events. Held under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, the event, established by Art Dubai Group, taps into the city’s creative resources as it acts in partnership with Dubai Design District (d3), and with the support of Dubai Design & Fashion Council (DDFC) and Dubai Culture & Arts Authority. The evolution of the emirate’s design scene leading up to this point has certainly been an interesting one, and although its still in its infancy Dubai Design Week has been attracting all the right kind of global attention, shining a spotlight on the region as it boldly joins the community of cities around the world all hosting prestigious design weeks. Although last year’s inaugural event saw 23,000 visitors and over 150 designers descend on the city from across the globe, this edition is being billed as bigger and better. Ahead of the design week, running from October 24 to 29, we highlight some of the show’s most-anticipated exhibitions and chat with several key event personnel as well as local conceptual artist Zeinab Alhashemi.

—— Throughout the week, from October 24 to 29, a lively programme is set to unfold which encompasses culture, education and entertainment. The entire city will be involved, although at the very heart of design week is d3 – an engaging space in Business Bay that’s proved to be a pivotal part of bringing together the city’s creative community. The event itself will champion a distinct multi-disciplinary approach, bringing together graphic and product design as well as architecture and industrial design – to name a few. A series of talks, lectures and workshops will support these activities and exhibitions, while a collection of brand new installations from renowned local and international designers will be placed at landmark locations around the city.

A couple of this year’s essential events include, the Global Grad Show. Drawing from an incredible pool of talent, the show is set to be the largest and most comprehensive gathering of designers, boasting 135 projects from 50 leading universities in 30 counties across six continents. The Abwab initiative then brings together emerging and established graphic designers, product designers, photographers and architects from Algeria, Bahrain, India, Iraq, Palestine and the UAE to highlight this year’s theme ‘The Human Senses’.

Finally, running alongside Dubai Design Week, is the third edition of Downtown Design, from October 25 to 28. Held at d3, the event is the region’s main platform for trade professionals to discover original design from all over the world, bringing together 100 brands from 25 countries. An impressive roster of established and emerging brands will take part, across a range of categories from furniture and lighting, to kitchens and textiles.

—— With borders being drawn tighter around many of the countries in the region, I believe it is vital to have a place like Dubai Design Week to gather and nurture talent. A place to allow access for both designers and audiences to mix, and create a moment in time that is enjoyed, but more importantly, sought after once the event is over.

I’m the creative director of Abwab, which is a regional design exhibition housed in a temporary pavilion within the walkways of d3. This year we have interactive and immersive installations that explore the theme of ‘The Human Senses’ from Algeria, Bahrain, India, Iraq, Palestine and the UAE. The preparation ahead of this big unveil has been the result of months of cross-country idea nurturing. From a jacket that transforms into a sleeping bag and a new architectural plan for the Jerash refugee camp in Jordan to a set of geometric

figures for intravenous poles designed to change how child patients relate to medical treatment, the exhibition promises to be truly fascinating, and I think, uplifting.

My role also involves programming for the Dubai Design Week. Working closely with d3 we create temporary exhibitions on site, free and open to all, creating an interplay of indoor and outdoor exhibitions for audiences to wander through. Alongside these exhibitions, d3 will be alive with pop-ups, site-specific installations, a design-dedicated Ripe Market (at the weekend) along with fun, educational workshops for all ages.

This year, there is also a large focus on recording, archiving and creating history. Whether through literature from the region or the celebration of milestone anniversaries such as the 10th year of UAE-based jewellery design brand Bil Arabi by Nadine Kanso.

—— Dubai Design Week is a landmark event that shines a spotlight on Dubai as a leading design hub and it’s closely aligned with DDFC’s objectives of positioning Dubai as a global destination for design. As the governmental entity established to develop Dubai’s design industry, we have supported Dubai Design Week from its inception and worked with them by facilitating collaborations within the design community and sharing key industry insights and knowledge. The event addresses this need by offering a unique platform for our wealth of local and regional design talent to share their work on a global scale. It also offers an opportunity for young designers to be immersed in a curated and inspirational environment, in which they come together to learn, collaborate and innovate – and this is such a crucial step towards creating a world-class design community in Dubai.

This year’s design week will span six days with events scheduled to take place across Dubai in over 70 venues, with significantly more visitors and internationally renowned exhibitors expected to attend.

The programme for 2016 is curated to explore the design narratives of countries within the MENASA region, especially within the Abwab initiative. In addition to Abwab and the Global Grad Show, the exhibition ‘Iconic City: Cairo Now! City Incomplete’ is one that really resonates with me. It is a multidisciplinary exhibition, which will be exploring Cairo’s creative scene by drawing inspiration from the city’s famous red brick buildings in varying stages of completion and is curated by Mohamed Elshahed, editor-in-chief of the Cairobserver.

Dubai’s design, arts, and culture scene is growing rapidly with many exciting campaigns and events on the horizon. The rise of gallery openings around the city, as well as the newly opened Dubai Opera House shows how keen Dubai is to embrace a more culturally diverse environment celebrating the artistic endeavours of multiple disciplines.

—— I’m a visual artist and designer and this is my second year participating in Dubai Design Week with a commissioned piece. Last year I showcased a piece commissioned by Dubai Design Week and Meraas – it was a public art piece displayed at City Walk whereas this year I’ve been working with Swarovski.

The brand actually approached me during last year’s design week and I was really thrilled that they were so keen to work with me. The company is really good at researching and approaching a certain kind of artist and designer and the experience of working with them has been so unique. To put it into perspective, usually the process of creating a piece like this on my own could take up to a year, just to find the right resources, manufacturers and so on.

But in comparison, thanks to the extra support I received from the Swarovski team, I was able to push my vision in a shorter time frame to a new perspective that I’m very pleased and happy with. The idea behind the collaboration is to be inspired by Swarovski crystals and incorporate these elements into your style of work – in my case its an interactive piece. By this I mean taking an object that was previously viewed as art and then placing it into a public space where people can not only just look at it but also use it.

I’m really excited to be involved in Dubai Design Week again, it’s such a great event and a great platform for new and upcoming designers who want to meet, network, converse and be inspired by established designers in their field. One of the things I’ve come to realise from my to travels to various design weeks around the world, and from stints studying abroad in cities like London and Barcelona, is was how advanced the designers are and how much of it is down to team work. You’ve got a designer, an engineer an architect – people with different backgrounds and experience all collaborating to complete one project. It’s factors like this that have made designers from the region push for a better platform to showcase their designs and realise the importance of having their work actually made and manufactured in Dubai. Before some factories and manufacturers didn’t even know what a prototype was, but I think thanks to the influence of so many well-known designers now coming to the region its brought about a lot of collaborations and a lot of opportunities have arise with many companies realising the importance of attending such a event. At Dubai Design Week, they are now approaching us! I think it’s a beautiful and amazing place that we’ve reach in just a few short few years.

Nestled in a vibrant beachside locale, Ramada Plaza Jumeirah Beach is a culinary hotspot for those in the know. The hotel’s five restaurants and bars each offer something unique from the fantastic Brazilian churrascaria at Fogueira Restaurant to the international favourites at Shores and hearty pub fare at American-themed Speakeasy Bar and Restaurant. At the helm is executive sous chef Prashan Perera who joined the property as a sous chef in 2012 and quickly rose up the ranks thanks to his talent and expertise.

“I started out as a simple commis II and am now an executive sous chef, who is responsible for managing and inspiring the entire kitchen staff as well as motivating them to work efficiently, without sacrificing quality. It’s all been career highlights for me. I have also been involved and recognised at a few well-known competitions such as the Emirates Guild Culinary Salon from 2004 to 2015, which was an amazing experience and brought honour to both me and the hotel,” says Perera.

Chef Perera, who was inspired to take up the profession by his mother, believes that there is no substitution for hard work.

“I discovered my passion for cooking because of my mother. At the tender age of 14, I would help her at home in Sri Lanka and was inspired by how she managed to convert a simple dish into something extraordinary. From there, I underwent a lot of training and practice to enhance my culinary skills, earning a diploma and then securing my first job at a Japanese restaurant in Sri Lanka.

“Now in Dubai, I explore and discover various specialities and ingredients from all over the world. The culinary scene in Dubai remains a big aspect of this city. There’s been a rapid evolution in the industry over the last few years and there is an extraordinary choice of restaurants as it’s a cosmopolitan city with a blend of different nationalities.”

At Ramada Plaza Jumeirah Beach, a typical day at work begins early in the morning as the team prepares the daily breakfast buffet for guests and, after

this is complete, Perera reviews and plans for the following day before starting with lunch and dinner preparations. Every day is challenging yet exciting.

“We offer a range of culinary options at the hotel from international, Arabian, American and Brazilian cuisine. One of the most-visited restaurants is our signature Fogueira Restaurant on the 35th floor of the hotel. It is famed for serving unlimited portions of 15 different meat cuts and authentic Brazilian cuisine. Alternatively, Sama Lounge, which is located on the same floor, offers traditional Arabic mezzes and shisha.

“We also have our American-themed bar, Speakeasy Bar and Restaurant that offers excellent snacks, grills, burgers and, last but not the least, for a family friendly place, our all-day dining restaurant Shores serves fine international fare,” explains Perera, who works with global and local suppliers for the highest quality ingredients.

Chef Perera recommends every visitor to the hotel try the delicious J. Wellington Wimpy burger from Speakeasy Bar and Restaurant as well as the succulent barbeque ribs.

“I love to eat and, in our hotel, there really are a lot of dishes for every type of diner. While there’s plenty to choose from, I personally like the Kenny Rogers’ Fire Flaming Burger at Speakeasy. It is absolutely delicious and comes with your choice of tender ground beef or chicken patty in a toasted bun with generous helpings of bacon, fried egg, lettuce, tomato, onions and pickles. It is served with French fries and a delicious coleslaw on the side.

Visitors can even reach parts of old Dubai using the popular Dubai Ferry.

The city’s latest must-visit attraction is Dubai Opera. The architecture of this stunning building is a tribute to Dubai’s maritime past and the venue represents a brand new cultural and entertainment hub. I personally can’t wait to enjoy the Les Misérables musical being staged there in November.

Avenue boasts the best luxury brands and also offers select areas specialising in shoes. For unique art, I like to visit the ProArt Gallery located right across the Jumeirah Mosque. They offer masterpieces by famed artists and a captivating selection of sculptures and paintings. I also like the unique art scene offered by diverse warehouse galleries at the Alserkal Avenue in Al Quoz. From underground art to new local artists in the making, you can find it all there.

No weekend in Dubai would be complete without a desert safari trip. Dubai has a rich past so discovering the old neighbourhoods around the picturesque Creek where traditional wooden abras can still be seen crossing the waters should also be part of any itinerary. Be sure to practice your bargaining skills before heading to the iconic gold and spice souks nearby.

Another remarkable highlight in the emirate is the musical Dubai Fountain shows that take place beside the majestic Burj Khalifa in Downtown Dubai. The evening shows take place every half hour from 6pm until 11pm.

After a day out in the sunshine, enjoy sundowners at Ginter at InterContinental Dubai Marina that boasts the city’s largest selection of gin and a wide range of cocktails that are complemented by a wonderful array of sharing platters. For a dinner to remember, book a table at Marina Social by the Michelin-starred chef Jason Atherton. The venue introduces deformalised fine dining to the city’s gourmands.
