MECHANICAL MASTERY ——— Franck Muller talks about record-breaking tourbillons and the future of watchmaking
A brand that’s famed as being the ‘master of complications’ needs little introduction and while every record-breaking Franck Muller timepiece speaks volumes on its own, they also individually tell the tale of the illustrious man behind the name. Watchmaker and founder Franck Muller was always interested in mechanical devices and, after graduating from the Geneva School of Watch Making, he quickly gained a reputation for technical excellence, restoring old timepieces for collectors and auction houses. Devoting time to craft unique watches that would offer the same level of technical achievement presented in pocket watches, the first Franck Muller wristwatches were presented in 1983 and immediately won over critics for its complicated movements that were created entirely by Muller himself. “Franck Muller has always been the Master of Complications. Since the start, it has always claimed its independence in production, strength in creativity and design, and passion for haute horlogerie complications,” says the enigmatic founder. “I love all Franck Muller watches and my mood dictates which collection to wear. But if I had to mention one of my favourites, it would be the Giga Tourbillon – the watch that features the biggest tourbillon in the world.” The Giga Tourbillon is just one of the timepieces that has cemented the brand’s reputation. After all, Franck Muller has succeeded in unveiling a world premiere and never-seen-before creation every single year. “Franck Muller watches are the reflection of my personality and every single model is directly inspired by my everyday living.
28
Each timepiece has its own story. For instance, the Crazy Hours collection came about based on my time at a magnificent resort in Mauritius. There, everything was punctuated by rules – which I really don’t like – so I wanted to create a watch that has none. The Crazy Hours was born. “For the Revolution collection, I got the name from the famous song by The Beatles. In 1968, The Beatles released the White album featuring the track Revolution. This song ignited an era of social change and chronicled a radical shift in the mindset of a new generation. I found it to be a suitable name for my collection because both the song and Franck Muller brand really had the same goal. It was during that time when I aimed to reconnect the values of traditional Swiss watchmaking to a totally transformed contemporary horology. The Franck Muller Revolution timepiece changed the world of watchmaking,” says Muller. Together with co-founder and CEO of the Franck Muller Group Vartan Sirmakes, the brand continues to grow from strength to strength with boutiques welcoming enthusiasts around the world, including the United Arab Emirates. “Customer satisfaction plays an important role within our business. My daily role is to assess all their needs and demands. The goal is not only to make them happy but to keep them coming back. Despite my busy schedule, I still try to reach out to customers on a regular basis by travelling and visiting Franck Muller boutiques worldwide,” explains Muller.

Here in the Middle East, demand for the Curvex and Master Square from the ladies’ collections are “very high” at the moment. The Master Square collection is inspired by Franck Muller’s taste for the Art Deco movement and the geometrical purity and symmetry of the lines give the collection a balanced design. Cintree Curvex, on the other hand, is the iconic shape of Franck Muller and the brand’s most distinctive silhouette. There’s much more in store for 2017, especially since it marks the brand’s 25th anniversary, as Muller explains. “Next year will indeed be a big year for us. We are working on several new models to be launched in 2017. These new collections will be released during our exhibition, the World Presentation of Haute Horlogerie that will be held in January 2017. We are also planning to host events in the Middle East to further make our presence felt and give a taste of Franck Muller luxury to watch aficionados in the region.” Collectors demand nothing but the best and leading maisons such as Franck Muller have to always be at the forefront of innovation, writing new chapters to the textbook of watchmaking. Muller remains unfazed by the challenge. “To make watches, you need three things. First, it is very important to create the most complicated movements. Second, you must master the body of the watch – the case. Lastly, and the most essential,
is to have an in-house mastery over dials because the dial is the first thing that people see. It is fundamental to have all the watchmaking processes in your own hands. This is the only way you can make a fully integrated product. “Watch enthusiasts will always seek the fulfillment that only mechanical watches can give. I may not be able to know what the future will bring but Franck Muller will continue to be the market leader in terms of technical innovation. We’ve had huge success with Thunderbolt, the world’s fastest tourbillon; Giga Tourbillon, the world’s largest tourbillon; Lady Tourbillon, the world’s smallest tourbillon and Aeternitas Mega 4, the world’s most complicated watch with no less than 36 complications, 1,483 components, 99 rubies and 91 movements. These collections started Franck Muller’s victory and we will continue to bring more world premieres in the future.” —— Discover the latest timepieces at the Franck Muller boutique in Marina Mall. Tradition, with a twist
‘The Souk at Qaryat Al Beri’ is a unique venue and the first of its kind in Abu Dhabi. Built on two levels, The Souk is an interesting fusion of Arabian architecture with a Venetian theme, which together reflects traditional Arab hospitality. Water canals meander through The Souk and nearby properties with abra boats ferrying hotel guests from the Shangri-La Hotel to various locations. Several restaurants and coffee shops have alfresco dining terraces that overlook the waters and afford a view of the picturesque landscape.

Art of the Matter ——— Discover a world of creativity and artistic expression at Abu Dhabi Art Words by Catherine Langley
In recent years Abu Dhabi has transformed itself into a respected arts and culture destination. Thanks to the development of Saadiyat Cultural District, an artistic island oasis just off the coast, the city will also soon be home to the Louvre Abu Dhabi, expected to open early 2017, followed by Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Zayed National Museum. Naturally Abu Dhabi’s expanding cultural contribution means it is an essential destination for artists, collectors, galleries and art professionals, which is why in 2009 the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority (TCA) launched the city’s first ever art fair, Abu Dhabi Art. The event, which began at Emirates Palace, but now takes place at Manarat Al Saadiyat, continues to highlight the capital’s growing importance as a leading arts destination.
“There are pieces from Africa, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and america. It is a truly international art fair, and every year we are welcoming new galleries”

Taking place from November 16 to 19, the eighth edition of Abu Dhabi Art features 40 galleries from 20 countries and a vast array of work – approximately 400 pieces by 200 artists – will be exhibited under the fair’s four sections: Modern & Contemporary, Bidaya, Beyond and Gateway. “This year we have a wonderful balance of artists from all over the world,” explains Alanood Al Hammadi, senior exhibitor relations at TCA Abu Dhabi. “There are pieces from Africa, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and America. It is a truly international art fair, and every year we are welcoming new galleries.”
One gallery that is new to Abu Dhabi Art is Sean Kelly, which will be showcasing works by British artist Idris Khan. Khan, who was recently commissioned to design a permanent public monument for the new Memorial Park in Abu Dhabi, will be exhibited in the Modern & Contemporary section that highlights innovative and exceptional artwork from established galleries. Other big-name galleries in this section include Dubai’s Cuadro Fine Art Gallery and Ayyam Gallery, as well as a range of artworks by leading figures such as Pablo Picasso, Lebanese painter Etel Adnan and French mixedmedia artist Jacques Villegle.
Founded in 2006, Ayyam Gallery, is a leading arts organisation in Dubai and Beirut, showcasing established and emerging artists. Among this year’s participating artists is mixed media artist Shurooq Amin and Iranian calligrapher and painter Mohammad Bozorgi.

While Abu Dhabi Art is ticking the international boxes in abundance, there is also a section for emerging galleries. Bidaya, which translates as ‘beginning’ in Arabic, invites one gallery every year to be showcased at the fair. For 2016 it will be Jeddah-based Hafez Gallery, which features artists including Mounirah Mosly and Ibrahim El Dessouki. “The point of Bidaya is to give an up-and-coming gallery the chance to be viewed on the international stage,” says Al Hammadi. “The gallery must be less than three years old and it must stand out in terms of its selection of programmes and artists. This year Hafez Gallery caught our attention, and we are very pleased to be able to support a gallery from the region.” Other highlights come in the form of the Beyond section, which aims to bring art into the public arena. A series of large-scale installations, sculptures and site-specific commissions will be exhibited around the city for six months, giving the public an opportunity to enjoy some of the most ground-breaking pieces at this year’s fair. Longterm Abu Dhabi Art supporters The Third Line are just one of the galleries participating in Beyond, with works by art collective Slavs and Tatars. “We have always enjoyed participating in Beyond,” says Saira Ansari, director of communications at The Third Line. “Our previous sculptures and installations have always received a great response from the public, so we are looking forward being involved again this year.”

The art fair attracts a sophisticated audience of local and international collectors, curators and art enthusiasts, providing a platform for global galleries looking to build a relationship with the region. For many of the galleries attending, its a fantastic networking opportunity and gateway into the Middle Eastern art scene.

The final section, and perhaps the most eagerly anticipated, is Gateway, which will have three exhibitions, each with a different theme. Running for a total of two months this section brings together some of the most prestigious names in the art world. “We have a large-scale installation by the Beijing artist Gu Dexin, curated by Alexandra Munroe of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation,” says Al Hammadi. “This is one of the highlights of the fair as Dexin, known for his use of organic material, will present an installation made of bananas.” The installation, which is a representation of life and decay, is an interactive piece and audience members will be encouraged to consume the bananas, allowing them to be involved in the process of reshaping the artwork.

Also on the docket is an exhibition on modern Arab art from the second half of the twentieth century. This will be curated by French art historian Catherine David, who comes from the National Museum of Modern Art (Musée National d’Art Moderne) at Paris’ Centre Georges Pompidou. Meanwhile, an exhibition titled (Re) Birth, which blends a selection of works from emerging and established artists, will be curated by longstanding Abu Dhabi Art collaborator Fabrice Bousteau. In addition to the exhibitions, Abu Dhabi Art will present a performing arts programme as well as complimentary talks, performances and workshops with some of the art world’s leading museum directors, critics and thinkers. There are also regular guided tours in Arabic and English offered for the entire duration of the fair.
Abu Dhabi Art will take place from November 16-19 at Manarat Al Saadiyat. For more info visit www.abudhabiart.ae

As one of the biggest sporting events on the calendar – and the popular motorsport’s season finale – the 2016 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix looks set to amaze with another spectacular edition taking place from November 25 to 27. Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island is the final destination of the 2016 World Grand Prix, which runs annually from March until November. The drivers and cars will arrive in the emirate after a staggering 20 countries have played host to the event in preceding months. This year is the eighth time Abu Dhabi has welcomed the season’s grand finale – and to date, over 2.5 million visitors have poured into the capital to attend the weekend’s festivities. Entertainment industry heavyweights, including Rihanna, The Chemical Brothers and the legend of stage and soul, Lionel Richie, will be revving up audiences for Formula 1 finale weekend concerts from Thursday to Sunday. The event is also the penultimate climax of Yasalam – the largest entertainment festival in the region.
“THE PREPAR ATIONS, PL ANNING AND ORGANISATION OF THE ABU DHABI GR AND PRIX IS A 12-MONTH ‘ALWAYS-ON’ PROCESS FOR US. WHEN WE FINISH THE ACTUAL R ACE WEEKEND, WE’RE STR AIGHT INTO A DELIVERY PROGR AMME FOR THE UP-AND-COMING YEAR”
Since its addition to the F1 calendar in 2009, the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit as been a real crowd favourite, making its mark as the only twilight race on the F1 calendar and, more recently, as the sport’s season finale.
Mega-musicians aside, the sheer logistics of managing the Abu Dhabi leg of the world Grand Prix is quite simply awe-inspiring and takes the team at Yas Marina Circuit, hosts of the season’s last race of the 2016 F1 Championship, a full year to plan and prepare for. “The preparations, planning and organisation of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is a 12-month ‘alwayson’ process for us. When we finish the actual race weekend, we’re straight into a delivery programme for the up-and-coming year,” explains Nick McElwee, sales and marketing director of Yas Marina Circuit, who describes the event as ‘electric’. “There’s a huge buzz across the race weekend and whether you’re in one of the corporate boxes or in the grandstand with family and friends, the sense of occasion is very apparent. And an upside of all the rigour in planning is that all of us working at the event can actually enjoy the weekend, watching the hard work come to life.”

Motoring buffs will be well versed in the mechanisms of the F1 World Grand Prix, but for many visitors, the finale, taking place in the last week of November, will be as much about the festivities and fun as it is about the winners. By the time the world’s best racing drivers arrive in the UAE, they will literally have driven all over the world’s best race tracks. Their itinerary will have included Australia, Mexico, Japan, Italy, Belgium, Monaco, China, Russia and Bahrain, to name a few. The two favourites this year are seasoned veterans Nico Rosberg of Germany and English superstar Lewis Hamilton, yet McElwee believes the element of surprise could well rear its head in this year’s Grand Prix final. “So far it’s looking good for an Abu Dhabi showdown in 2016. I won’t name names but as a promoter I like to see personality on the track, drivers who make the racing interesting. For example, there’s a young kid this year who’s bringing the sport alive as he forces his own style and makes the ‘older-guard’ uncomfortable.”

YAS ISL AND IS THE ULTIM ATE HAVEN FOR CELEBRITIES, R ACING BUFFS AND FA MILIES SEEKING A WEEKEND OF FUN

Yas Island is the perfect destination for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix because it’s already been playing host to the famous Yasalam Festival – a 122-day long event that takes place in the lead up to the Formula 1 final. Yasalam – which means ‘wow’ in Arabic – is an annual event that began in 2009. For more information on the festival, visit: yasalam.ae With its state-of-the art facilities ranging from theme parks to hotels, shopping malls, concert stadiums and a marina, Yas Island is the ultimate haven for celebrities, racing enthusiasts and families seeking a weekend of fun. As the climax of four months of festivities, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has also become a huge draw for UAE residents and international visitors alike. McElwee comments, “Yas Island is expecting over 30 million visitors by 2018 and of course this is down to the superb array of entertainment and hospitality options – of which the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is an integral part.”
If you’re seeking a celebrity-filled, glamour-soaked evening of luxury then the host of the official F1 after party, Amber Lounge, is the name to remember. Set on board the Amber Lounge Celebrity Yacht, you will be at the centre of the action on race weekend. Amber Lounge is the official destination all F1 drivers and visiting celebrities make a beeline for during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Pass holders can view all the qualifying races from a breathtaking spot aboard the yacht on November 26, while enjoying international DJ sets and celebrity performances. The showstopper however is the following evening on November 27. That’s where guests can watch the final race in style and party the night away with the F1 drivers and VIPs. Gift bags, official team merchandise and luxury transfer services from any point within the marina to Amber Lounge are all part of the experience. A two-day package costs just over AED18,000 per person. For more information, visit: amber-lounge.com

Abu Dhabi Grand Prix ticket holders had better plan for a busy weekend, because for the first time this year, your Formula 1 passes will also allow complimentary access to Yas Waterworld and Ferrari World Abu Dhabi– two world class theme parks on Yas Island. Dubbed the greatest water park in the region, Yas Waterworld is the perfect place to cool off, while also testing adrenaline levels. Visitors will need at least a day to explore with over 45 different water rides and attractions. Meanwhile, the famed Ferrari World Abu Dhabi focuses on speed and velocity of the fourwheeled kind with world-class rollercoasters, go-kart racing, state-of-the-art simulators and so much more. If theme parks aren’t your thing, head to Yas Beach – a stunning stretch of sandy white shore and crystal blue sea, conveniently populated with a raft of fun, outdoor activities. Book a private cabana and while the day away in the sunshine, or join in the beach sports and outdoor gym sessions. Back at Yas Marina Circuit, families can relax off track and explore the Oasis Entertainment areas next to each grandstand. These will feature a host of family activities throughout the Formula 1 weekend.
The entertainment and lifestyle offering at Yas Island is among the most appealing aspects for visitors. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has grown in size this year and, in addition to the race action at Yas Marina Circuit, ticket holders will enjoy complimentary access to the Yas Waterworld and Ferrari World Abu Dhabi parks.

Championing the Cinq Mondes spa philosophy, the stunning spa nestled within Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche, brings together a mix of French cosmetology with time-honoured treatments from across the globe. A wonderful example of this is So Spa’s popular Revitalising Volcanic Stone Therapy. Guests can opt for either a 60- or 90-minute session that boasts both spiritual and physical benefits as the heated stones work to balance the body’s chakras and rebuild its natural energy reserves. For an added lift why not take your pick from the spa’s dessert menu, which includes the pampering Light Feet Energising Treatment. Over 45-minutes, sit back and relax as a skilled therapist provides a targeted foot treatment, complete with exfoliation and nail and cuticle care. This one is sure to have you walking away with a spring in your step. The spa also features first-class facilities including a lavish hammam and dedicated male and female Jacuzzi areas.
Originating in Thailand, the word Anantara is derived from Sanskrit and means ‘without end’ – a phrase that perfectly encapsulates the brand’s all-encompassing philosophy. Located within Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara, for those after a holistic body boost, the spa offers two treatments that are sure to temp. Part of the spa’s Vichy treatment range, the 90-minute Basil and Mint Body Delight offers a twist on traditional hammam treatments. Weary muscles begin to ease thanks to the heated rain shower and refreshing exfoliation, on a warm marble slab, using basil and mint works to uplift the senses. This is followed by a lavish dose of Shiffa energising body oil. Alternatively, Anantara Spa’s Arabian Massage, enhances the body’s energy level by focusing on the body’s pressure points using a variety of techniques and Thai stretching. The session also looks to ease aching muscle and tension, leaving you feeling fully recharged.

A trip to its luxurious spa, only serves to elevate this experience. Refined and elegant, the tasteful décor is perfectly complemented by the fantastic range of high-end spa treatments. Perfect for guests eager to boost the body’s own energy channels, the spa’s Asian Spell Massage uses a combination of eastern techniques such as gentle rocking, free-flow movements and Shiatsu on key pressure points. In addition to amping up your circulation, the treatment, while incredibly relaxing, also stimulates sluggish systems to leave you feeling totally refreshed. A fantastic add-on then, is Iridium Spa’s Sea Salt Revitaliser. The 30-minute treatment offers an express exfoliation to invigorate the body with a blend of sea slats and essential oils for smoother, more supple skin.
Conveniently located on the capital’s prestigious Yas Island, the spa at Radisson Blu Hotel, Abu Dhabi Yas Island is perfectly placed to offer a haven of tranquillity amidst the city’s many thrilling attractions. Harnessing the natural pick-me-up powers of zesty fruits, the Citrus Detox Reviver is ideal for fighting off fatigue. Crafted to boost sluggish bodies, the treatment combines pink grapefruit, fresh rosemary and juniper berries for a targeted detoxing effect. An intense exfoliation of ground olive grains then refines pores before nourishing oils and a foot reflex pressure massage brings the session to a close. Visitors can also follow this up with the spa’s 30-minute Revitalising Eye treatment, which looks to herbal extracts of toning black tea and the antioxidant power of cranberries and strawberries to reduce puffiness, dark undereye circles and fine lines. Great for sun-seekers and outdoorsy types, this treatment also helps protect against environmental damage.

Flying Aces, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi
Neighbouring emirate, and capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi presents an equally exciting destination that begs exploration. Despite growing from a sleepy coastal village to a booming metropolis, the city is still firmly focused on its cultural offerings. As new developments continue to spring up across the capital, transforming it into a global hub for arts, business and leisure, to truly appreciate the remarkable progress of a city, visitors need to fully understand its history. At Heritage Village by the Corniche Breakwater, visitors are given the chance to explore this not-so-distant past and marvel at the extent to which Abu Dhabi has changed since oil revenues transformed the emirate’s fortunes around the 1970s. Here, the life of the Bedu people is proudly showcased while pastimes such as glass-blowing, weaving and pottery are demonstrated by local artisans. Just across the water, Abu Dhabi Corniche stretches along the coast with its backdrop of gleaming towers that gesture towards a city living very much in the future. Of course, no visit to Abu Dhabi would be complete without a trip to the magnificent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Situated between three main bridges – Maqta, Mussafah and Sheikh Zayed – it adds an enchanting touch to the capital’s skyline. An astounding 82 domes form the roofs and ceilings of the structure, each clad with marble on the outside and decorated with works of art and verses from the Holy Qur’an on the inside. Slightly further afield, there are many architectural sights and ancient forts to explore, including Qasr Al Muwaji. This historic building has watched over
the emirate’s heritage heartland of Al Ain for nearly a century. It now houses an exhibition in a modern glass-walled space that tells the story of UAE president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the Al Nahyan dynasty. The emirate boasts a varied topography with a stunning coast and sea, natural islands, glorious sand dunes and abundant mangrove forests. The mangroves, commonly seen around the capital’s islands and sheltered coastal areas, go on for miles and miles and provide essential shelter to local marine life. Fishing was one of the oldest means of survival for Abu Dhabi inhabitants who have relied on the ocean’s bounty for centuries. The practice lives on here today – visitors can take a trip to the dhow port by Mina Zayed early in the morning and watch as these traditional boats prepare to head out to sea. The Abu Dhabi Pearl Journey on-board an authentic jalboot vessel is another great way to experience the city’s treasured past. For those eager to explore the emirate’s more modern additions and luxury leisure options, head to Yas Island. Here motorsports enthusiasts can enjoy the revelry of this month’s Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit with festivities continuing right along Yas Marina. Alternatively, tee off on one of the region’s most outstanding golf courses, the picturesque 18-hole links-style club at Yas Links Abu Dhabi. This prestigious district is also home to a bevy of family-fun activities including Yas Waterworld and the famed indoor theme park, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi.

GLOBAL FLAVOURS ——— Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi’s executive chef, Mehmet Koyunchu, chats about the hotel’s dynamic culinary offerings and authentic Thai hospitality
Teaming his Turkish heritage with years of experience across the Middle East, including stints in Qatar and three years in Dubai, executive chef Mehmet Koyunchu brings a wide breadth of skills to his role at Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi. Despite only being based at the property for a few months, Koyunchu is already well versed with the capital’s ever-expanding culinary landscape. “Abu Dhabi’s dining scene is quite dynamic. The city, in general, is definitely one of the best for indulging in multiple dining experiences when compared to other destinations. The competition is getting fiercer with each passing day, but I believe it’s a good thing as it means chefs are required to stretch their imagination and constantly innovate and enhance standards at every opportunity,” explains Koyunchu. Recounting his background, Koyunchu reveals: “Growing up in a Mediterranean country has definitely had a big impact on my cooking technique and style. As Turkish cuisine bears a resemblance to Arabic cuisine, I am pretty familiar with Middle Eastern fare. “However, I do believe that we are living in a globalised era now and we all need to be much more open minded than before. Therefore, in order to come up with new concepts and for new tastes to be considered unique, it is important to think outside the box while keeping the pursuits of a global diner in mind.” The enthusiastic chef reveals that although his career path originally saw him pursuing a profession in archaeology, his true passion for food and drive for a vocation that would remain continually innovative led him to further explore the world of culinary arts. “I’m finding my new role at the helm of Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi’s culinary department really exciting. I oversee the entire culinary operations of the hotel so my daily responsibilities can range from taking care of the everyday procedures at the hotel’s restaurants and looking after events, right through to meeting suppliers and attending hotel management meetings.”
72
The hotel group is well respected in the industry for its unique brand of Thai hospitality and the Abu Dhabi branch of Dusit Thani is a clear favourite in the capital, boasting five-star luxury, great gourmet options and a choice location near the emirate’s lush mangroves. The property has even added an open air rooftop cinema to its ever-expanding portfolio of offers. “Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi really endeavours to bring the culinary legacy of Thailand to the region. This is something that is well reflected across the hotel and especially at Benjarong, our signature Thai restaurant. Many of the primary ingredients used in Benjarong’s dishes are sourced directly from Thailand, so we’re able to offer authentic cuisine from different parts of the country. “The restaurant’s papaya salad is one of my favourite dishes. It’s extremely fresh and encompasses a variety of flavours. I would recommend trying the traditional version of this salad with additional chillies, as this will boost your appetite and really bring together the flavours of every ingredient in the salad.” Another big culinary attraction at the hotel is The Capital Grill. Boasting refined décor and impeccable service, this sleek venue is ideal for romantic dinners and special occasions. Full of praise for the Mediterranean eatery, Koyunchu excitedly shared his menu highlights with us, including the Japanese A5-grade Wagyu steak. Succulent and juicy the chef says it pairs particularly well with The Capital Grill’s fine selection of wines. While for seafood fans, the seared scallops is a must. “Served with pumpkin purée, beef chorizo, asparagus and green peas, this dish looks vibrant and is bursting with flavour,” says Koyunchu. The chef also reveals that the restaurant will soon feature a refreshed menu championing brand new varieties of steak as while as the addition of a delectable sushi selection. —— For more information or to book a table at one of Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi’s restaurants, please contact: 02 6988888

Artisan bakery and bistro whEAT is a big hit with the city’s early risers. No surprise really when the bread is homemade, the eggs are free range and the pancakes are deliciously fresh and fluffy. Located within Le Royal Méridien Abu Dhabi, the quaint café offers a menu brimming with all your favourite morning essentials. Think blueberry Bircher muesli, honey roasted granola and warm turkey ham and cheese croissants with apple and mustard chutney. All of which go perfectly with whEAT’s range of tall, frothy coffees and fruity breakfast brews. We’d definitely recommend starting your day out on the café’s terrace and if you’re anything like us, be sure to pass by the dessert counter on the way out to pick up a few afternoon treats.

—— There’s nothing quite like a leisurely Italian lunch and when it comes to authentic flavours served in a sophisticated setting, BiCE is one of our clear favourites. Located on the podium level of the prestigious Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, whether dining al fresco on the picturesque terrace or nestled within its refined interiors, you’re sure to be impressed by the restaurant’s vibrant array dishes all bursting with robust flavour. While the menu is known for championing seasonally-themed dishes, all year round diners can look forward to a bevy of Italian classics. Appetisers and entrées include much-loved plates of plump burrata cheese with grilled zucchini, baked eggplant with layers of gooey mozzarella as well as rich minestrone soup. For mains, the braised lamb shank with saffron Sardinian fregola pasta is a must and no meal would be complete without the famed Tiramisù della BiCE dessert. 6

With its glittering waterside location and menu of upscale Lebanese cuisine, Byblos Sur Mer has rightly earned its famed reputation across the capital. Its spacious outdoor terrace gives way to the impressive marina views of InterContinental Abu Dhabi, making it an ideal spot for sundowners and pre-dinner drinks. And once the restaurant’s aromatic fragrances prove too tempting to resist, settle into one of the venue’s chic booths and take your pick from an assortment of Middle Eastern favourites. Think a vibrant selection of salads, hot and cold mezzeh and hearty Lebanese grills. Daily catches and fresh seafood also feature heavily on the menu with highlights including Omani lobster, fried barracuda and red snapper. For dessert, we highly recommend the deliciously extravagant chocolate fondant with a local twist complete with fig marmalade, halawa and mouhalabiyah semifreddo.
8
—— In keeping with its name, even those who consider themselves true chocolate gourmands, are sure to be blown away by a visit to The Chocolate Gallery. At this sleek venue set within Fairmont Bab Al Bahar, chocolate making is considered an art form. Here dedicated chocolatiers craft and mould a scrumptious selection of fine confectionary – from decadent truffles to creamy pralines, it’s truly a delectable choice. Served daily from 2pm to 6pm, the café’s signature afternoon tea invites guests to savour its many chocolate creations, accompanied by a selection of fondues, cakes and, of course, hot and chilled chocolate beverages. There’s even the option to add a glass of two of bubbles, for an extra dose of afternoon indulgence.

qa s r al mu waiji
Built in the early 20th century, Qasr Al Muwaiji fort in the ‘garden city’ of Al Ain was the home of generations of the Al Nahyan family including UAE president HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. An offbeat cultural attraction, this quaint harbour by the Mina Zayed port is a hive of activity. We recommend heading there early in the morning to beat the heat and watch the traditional abra boats set sail or later in the evening after sunset as catches are offloaded. The scene presents a striking contrast between the past and present.

AL AIN CAMEL MARKET
Walking into the Antiques Gallery feels like wandering into a scene from the Arabian Nights classic. A treasure trove of historic artworks awaits in each room in this villa, along with magnificently hilted swords and centuries-old stately ornaments. You could be forgiven for rubbing an old-style lamp at the gallery in the hope of being offered three wishes by the resident genie. Contact: 02 6671229
The last souk of its kind in the UAE, visitors to Al Ain Camel Market are in for a treat as it houses hundreds of camels and presents excellent photo opportunities. The market also has several stores selling traditional items. Tour guides are available but it’s easy enough to explore on your own. Situated east of Jebel Hafeet in Al Ain, the market is open from 6am to 7pm. Entry costs AED20 per person.

Elegant pink f lamingos, Indian tigers, African giraffe and Arabian oryx are among the many exotic creatures that call this 400-hectare park their home. Al Ain Zoo’s bird house is a highlight for anyone with an interest in feathered creatures and we also recommend booking a fantastic night tour to witness the nocturnal habits of animals at the zoo. Built in 1937, the historic building was originally the palace of the late UAE president HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Now open to the public as a museum, the palace has been painstakingly restored and houses a large collection of key artefacts that tell the story of the nation. JEBEL HAFEET
A 15-minute drive up a steep winding road leads to the summit of Jebel Hafeet – one of the highest peaks in the country from which the whole of Al Ain is visible. It’s a worthy way to round off a day spent visiting the capital’s second city and a perfect place to catch the sunset. If you’d like to make a day of it Green Mubazzarah at the foot of Jebel Hafeet is a wonderful picnic spot during the cooler months.

Its distinctively bold black and red interiors are a welcome sight for Toshi’s seasoned diners. A signature restaurant of Grand Millennium Al Wahda, the well-established restaurant is popular with residents and tourists alike. The menu is certainly comprehensive, so be prepared to embark on a culinary journey of the east, as Asian classics – think dim sum, pad Thai, nasi goreng and vibrant papaya salads – sit alongside Japanese favourites of crab California rolls, fresh eel maki and tiger prawns prepared teppanyaki style. If it’s the sushi options that take your fancy, be sure to take advantage of Toshi’s Sushi Night package offering unlimited servings from the sushi bar each evening. Dessert fans should definitely save room for a sweet ending; especially the homemade coconut ice cream served in a coconut shell with chocolate fondue and candied macadamia nuts. Contact: 02 4953921

K A ZU
The graceful curves and bold architectural design of Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi makes it one of the most recognisable locations in the capital. Perfectly at home at this exceptional venue is Kazu. Presenting an impressive selection of authentic Japanese fare, the restaurant effortlessly blends several key elements of contemporary Japanese dining. Elevating the stylish interiors, the addition of a dedicated sushi and sashimi bar, robata-yaki grill and two teppanyaki bars all add to the overall aesthetics and create an energetic vibe. A wonderful way to experience Kazu’s varied gastronomic delights is with the Omakase menu, or Chef’s Choice, a delightful edit of chef Idfan’s most treasured dishes. There’s also a sake expert on hand to advise on the perfect drink to complement the chef’s exotic f lavours. Contact: 02 6560600
Nestled within Venetian Village, adjoining The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal, Inakaya offers authentic Japanese robata-yaki style cooking – robata meaning ‘around a sunken hearth’ and yaki meaning ‘grilling’. Perfect for diners looking for a little joviality with their meal, take prime position at the counter and enjoy the showmanship of the grill 6 masters in action as they expertly prepare skewers of succulent cuts that are enthusiastically served straight to your plate on long wooden paddles. This traditional sense of cooking has gained popularity and with passionate chefs like those at Inakaya it’s easy to see why. Robata ingredients range from the menu’s Kobe beef and free-range chicken to black cod fillet and king crab leg. So there’s certainly more than enough to tempt the palate. While the robatayaki table is great to soak up the restaurant’s festive feel, now is also the perfect time to take advantage of the capital’s cooler climes and enjoy a seat on the terrace. Adjacent to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Venetian Village’s al fresco promenade affords glorious waterside views. Contact: 02 4041921

Zakaria El Gendy of Mafraq Hotel Abu Dhabi shares his top tips for exploring the city
1
Abu Dhabi is a fantastic city with so much to offer the whole family. From a great selection of world-class attractions to various adventurous activities, there really is something for everyone. One of my top recommendations when it comes to exploring the city is to hop on a traditional dhow boat. Perfect to enjoy during sunset or on a starry night, visitors can enjoy live entertainment and take in the breathtaking sights of Abu Dhabi while cruising along the emirate’s waters. A desert safari is another must-do activity as it provides visitors with the opportunity to experience the stunning desert landscape of the UAE and learn more about the region’s culture and unique way of life, all while enjoying activities such as camel trekking and dining under the stars. You can even choose to stay in a luxury desert camp overnight. For younger visitors, the Emirates Park Zoo is one of the city’s most loved attractions and is home to a fantastic array of animals including lions, cheetahs and white tigers. The famous indoor theme park Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is bound to be one the most

exciting places you’ll visit. Whether you’re a motorsports fan or not, there are many rides and attractions to keep you entertained. For those looking to remain active while in the capital, I recommend a visit to Zayed Sport City. This giant sports complex features everything from basketball and beach volleyball facilities to tennis courts, a football stadium and a fitness centre, so it’s perfect for sports fans. The city also offers plenty of cultural venues to visit. Saadiyat Island is considered Abu Dhabi’s main cultural hub, with Manarat Al Saadiyat regularly hosting top gallery events and art exhibitions. The island will also soon be home to Louvre Abu Dhabi, which is scheduled to be completed by early next year. This will then be followed by the opening of Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Zayed National Museum. Shopping is also one of the major attractions for people visiting Abu Dhabi. The spacious, air-conditioned malls and wide variety of brands and products make for a great retail experience. Marina Mall, one of the biggest malls in the city, is located near the Corniche Breakwater. It offers an impressive assortment of fashion, entertainment and dining. Families looking for a capital stay will feel right at home at Mafraq Hotel Abu Dhabi. The hotel features dedicated kids’ play areas and hosts a Friday brunch that is popular for guests of all ages. We also have family-friendly restaurants, including Mediterranean favourite The Olive Branch. Then for couples looking to book a romantic night out, I highly recommend Asia de Cuba at Nation Riviera Beach Club. It’s a must-try Chino-Latino restaurant on the Corniche with a lovely outdoor terrace, relaxing cabanas and a menu packed with delicious fusion food.
