Italian World Food Summit There is so much to take in during a trip to Dubai, but for me, a visit to Burj Khalifa is incredible. Journey to the observation deck on level 148 for sweeping panoramas of the city and beyond. Once the sun sets, join the crowds at the base of the world’s tallest building and watch the dancing waters of The Dubai Fountain. For another breathtaking view, one of the city’s best kept secrets is TOMO on the 17th floor at Raffles Dubai. Here, authentic Japanese cuisine can be enjoyed while gazing over Dubai’s mesmerising skyline. For those in town to shop, The Dubai Mall is the biggest and one of the most visited malls, in the world. It houses high-end brands as well as a range of designer stores. Adventure is also never far away and a trip to Ras Al Khaimah's trekking route Stairway to Heaven, makes an outstanding experience. Measuring an impressive 1,930 metres, the mountain climb is awe inspiring and passes by an ancient tribal trail above a deep wadi. Dubai boasts a rich history and there are plenty of opportunities to gain an insight into times past. I recommend a tour to the city’s oldest quarter, Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood to explore the traditional markets, from the vibrant Spice Souk to the bustling Gold Souk. The area, around Dubai Creek, is also home to traditional courtyard houses and classic wind towers that offer a charming glimpse of how Dubai once looked. One of the most romantic dinner treats in the UAE can be arranged through Platinum Heritage, where a private meal is hosted in a scenic sand dune setting during a trip to the desert. Or end a busy day taking in the city’s sights with a lovely meal at one of the many gourmet restaurants located in the chic setting of Dubai International Financial Centre.

Celebrating the very best in Italian cuisine, the gastronomic showcase returns for a sixth edition this month. Italian master chefs jet into town for the event, which also sees the cream of local cooking talent take part. Giorgio Locatelli (pictured) presides over one of the city’s finest Italian restaurants, Ronda Locatelli at Atlantis The Palm, Dubai, and is among the impressive roster of chefs in attendance. Footprints in the sand Long before Dubai grew into the impressive metropolis it is today, the landscape and its people were very much defined by the great swathes of desert that covered the region. Here, among the dunes of the UAE desert, the emirate’s roots can be found. The wild landscape offered few resources to its inhabitants and, as a result, a way of life emerged that was a product of the environment. Many traditions formed at this time have been passed down the generations and are still preserved today. Camels, falcons and Arabian horses were invaluable companions used for transportation, foraging for food and defending desert territories. Falconry techniques once used for survival are now retained in the form of a much-loved sport that is still a lively part of UAE life. Arabic coffee was first brewed over a campfire to help fend off the evening chill. Now it is enjoyed throughout the region and the world over. As time passed and the riches of the Arabian Gulf were discovered, the desert population moved towards the coastal towns of Dubai and Abu Dhabi and a new chapter began, but visitors keen to learn something of the UAE’s past can embark on a desert safari to visit a Bedouin camp and spend some time following in the footsteps of the first settlers. A visit to The Heritage Village in Dubai offers some fascinating insights into an extraordinary way of life.

Much in store The concept of Galeries Lafayette was born when two French cousins, Théophile Bader and Alphonse Kahn, took over a haberdashery on Rue Lafayette in Paris in 1893. By the turn of the following century, the company was already becoming successful and in 1920 opened its first international store in London; setting in motion a gradual global takeover that would later encompass Berlin, Casablanca, Jakarta, Dubai and Beijing. When World War II broke out in 1939, disaster struck, not just for the country but for the business. The founding family was removed from the company’s management during the Nazi German occupation where it remained in the hands of the Vichy government until liberation in 1944. When the company returned to the family’s control, Bader’s sonin-law Raoul Meyer became chairman. It was during Meyer’s reign that the firm became more fashion-focused and began expanding its portfolio. In 1970, Meyer was succeeded by another of Bader’s son-in-laws, Max Heilbronn after which control was passed from family member to family member as it shifted between the Meyers and the family of Heilbronn’s son-in-law Etienne Moulin.

In the decades that followed, Galeries Lafayette went on to make its mark on the fashion industry in a number of ways. As well as launching department stores, the group acquired key brands such as Nouvelles Galeries, BHV, Uniprix, Prisunic, Louis Pion-Royal Quartz, Didier Guérin and watch brands such as Louis Pion and Royal Quartz. In 1953, the group inaugurated a series of events including international exhibition La

A decade later, Galeries Lafayette unveiled a commitment to emerging designers by unveiling the Laura Corner; a section of the Paris store which stocked young designers and is credited with launching leading labels such as Sonia Rykiel. This concept is applied to its outlets around the world. Since 2009, the company has remained in the sole control of the Moulin family and despite many management changes, has upheld the founders’ original intentions. “Today, the aims and values of Galeries Lafayette reflect the core values on which the expertise of the brand is founded: customer-centricity, generosity, audaciousness, glamour and optimism,” Pascal Abchee, general manager, Galeries Lafayette Dubai, explains. “Theophile Bader’s unique vision stated that our aim is ‘making the good and the beautiful accessible to all’. Today, this remains the core of our vision.”

Established names such as Karen Millen, Diesel, Pinko and Reiss shine in the womenswear section, while male shoppers can revel in household names such as Fred Perry, Lacoste, Paul Smith and Tommy Hilfiger. Diffusion lines from luxury brands are also widespread including Sonia by Sonia Rykiel, Red Valentino, Lauren by Ralph Lauren, Love Moschino and Karl Lagerfeld Accessories. Creating further excitement, a number of celebrities have graced the store for special launch events such as Blake Lively for the unveiling of the Gucci Premiere fragrance. Knowing that UAE shoppers often favour unique buys, the store collaborates exclusively with boutique companies such as chic Parisian fashion house Weill and fresh young Polish label Poca & Poca. Galeries Lafayette also supports up-and-coming designers from around the world, offering a platform to UAE-based designers such as Ingie Chalhoub and her label Ingie Paris, as well as emerging brands from further afield such as Canella Hostal Couture, created by French designer

Displayed within a special abaya section of Galeries Lafayette Dubai, offerings such as this reaffirm the company’s commitment to accessibility. Abchee says: “We cater to the UAE and GCC customer in general by offering dedicated product lines and styles suited to this market. We also collaborate with local designers and hold events targeted to these customers. In this case, the exclusivity of the products and limited edition pieces are an important element of differentiation.”

In 1990, the company inaugurated Lafayette Gourmet, an international dining and food hall concept that it also brought to Dubai. The high-end cafeteria offers cuisine from 11 countries around the world and regularly hosts activities such as cooking classes, brunch, afternoon tea and themed dinner nights. Visitors can purchase culinary delights from the grocery selection that’s stocked full with gourmet oils, pasta, cheeses and much more, sourced from across the globe.

Power of design

10

Galeries Lafayette has long shared a history with architecture and design plays an important part in the company’s persona. The link began with the opening of the company’s first premises in Paris. Architect Georges Chedanne was commissioned to design the outlet, which was reworked when it was extended in 1912 by artists Louis Majorelle and Jacques Gruber. Inspired by modern art, the pair turned the new-look store into a theatre for fashion, creating a neo-Byzantine dome which became a famous symbol of the company. This relationship with design continued through the decades and boutiques are constantly upgraded by creative architects. The Dubai Mall store, for example, is undergoing a renovation plan that will not only further elevate the store’s image, but enable new brands and concepts to be introduced. Abchee says: “We have worked with top architects worldwide on the project, which will be revealed in 2015. We cannot yet disclose any details, but I can tell you that the store will look absolutely amazing.”

RACHEL INGRAM

With its rich variety and fascinating narratives Islamic art, in all of its forms, tells the story of times and peoples past. In the UAE, fine examples of the art form can be found in important buildings such as mosques and preserved in museums for art aficionados, history enthusiasts and those simply looking to gain a deeper understanding of the region. At Miraj Islamic Art Centre, artworks from the genre have been painstakingly preserved and are available to buy. Its gallery in the Jumeirah area of the city presents pieces in an array of styles as it aims to educate visitors about traditional and modern Islamic arts. Offering a unique take on a shopping experience, almost every piece on display is available to purchase. Whether looking for an investment or reminder of the city, a visit to the centre is an enlightening experience.

A rich tradition The principles which underpin Islamic art are sewn into the very fabric of societies in this region and far beyond. As Islam expanded from around the seventh century, the art form which accompanied it crossed a host of borders from Spain to China. Spanning a time frame of around 1,300 years, countries most often represented are the central Asian republics, the Middle East, Turkey, Syria, Iran, the Indian sub-continent, China,

Malaysia, Indonesia, Egypt and Africa. The incredibly varied art produced during this time was created for a Muslim population, although it wasn’t necessarily defined by religious themes. While calligraphy was used to illustrate the Qur’an and decorative glasswork adorned mosque lamps, a huge number of examples of the Arabesque style can be found in everyday objects such as pottery, carpets, textiles and tiling.

Local initiative Miraj Islamic Art Centre was opened by CIE Group around 10 years ago. The idea was to reintroduce the world to Islamic art and, as such, revive a dying industry. “Miraj Islamic Art Centre is an embodiment of our efforts to popularise Islamic art forms,” founder A. Rashid Mir says. “In the last decade, the centre has enlightened millions of visitors who come to Dubai with the exposition of culture, arts and crafts of the world of Islam.”

“We wanted to show people, with everything that’s been happening in the world, that Muslims still have God-gifted fingers to create art. Everything here is handmade, unique and has been collected through thorough research. We believe that art is a form of worship so we sent experts to Iran, Iraq and India to collect the finest pieces,” adds sales director Manzoor Kachroo. Dubai was chosen as the centre’s first location in the Middle East because of its thriving visitor industry that has attracted nationalities from across the globe. The company also has a centre in Abu Dhabi and is set to expand in the coming years. “Islamic art is special to the whole world. When people come, they come for half an hour or just 10 minutes, but I have seen them leaving after 10 hours. If people understand what handwork is, what art is, there’s not a better place for further education than this place,” Kachroo says.

The gallery A veritable treasure trove of collectables, the variety of pieces on display is extensive and a world of artefacts of all shapes and sizes lies waiting to be explored. From handcrafted Indian chess sets to eight-foottall engraved pots, all manner of objects are accounted for across the many rooms of the two-level gallery. Some of the most impressive pieces include ancient astronomical indicators such as astrolabes. These items are particularly important to Islam as astronomy remains a key part of

8

the religion and the placement of the moon on its orbit continues to determine the dates of the holy month of Ramadan each year. Many items on display are examples of ancient craft techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation. Woodcarvings and pots made from semiprecious metals are covered in hand-carved calligraphy; often verses from the Qur’an. This text can also be seen across basins, cups and vases from the far corners of the region. Look a little closer at white marble tables and ceramic china and discover delicate patterns of flowers and vines put in place using the centuries’ old Florentine technique of marble inlay adopted by craftsmen in the Mughal era. includes smelted swords, inscribed shields and sturdy armour and tells tales of war dating back to 12th century Persia. A variety of pottery from civilisations past is also positioned throughout the gallery. Iznik dishes and Ottoman silver pitchers stand as a reminder of ancient Turkey while enamelled glass lamps from Egypt and colourful tea sets represent everyday Arabic life. Decorating the walls, paintings and tapestries provide fascinating insights into the region’s history, with each piece telling a different story. A highlight of the museum is its collection of carpets. Handwoven Persian rugs are adorned with precious jewels and finished with fine gold silk.

10

Art to treasure Carpets and pashminas are a major draw and on the ground floor a large area is given over to displaying rugs. Upstairs guests can browse rail upon rail of beautiful fabrics, saris and pashminas created predominantly by Indian artisans. There is also a room filled with jewellery and elaborate trinkets sourced from across the region.

Preserving heritage While the establishment’s primary aim is to showcase art from Islamic countries, the centre also supports present-day artisans. Kachroo explains: “We have between seven and eight thousand families working

under the CIE group. In Delhi in India, for example, we have eight showrooms, while in Jaipur we have four showrooms and in Agra we have even more. The company has given many opportunities to people to work and create art.” Gesturing to a large pot covered in intricate calligraphy that took years to complete, Kachroo says: “When the artist creates a piece of art with chisel and hammer, his mind and his soul goes into it and it becomes a form of worship.”

Chaumet Chaumet’s range of fine jewellery has stood the test of time since its establishment in 1780. Renowned for the artistic f lair involved in its designs, Chaumet’s new bridal collection Joséphine also works well for red carpet events. In the past, Chaumet crafted fashionable and bejewelled headwear for Empress MarieJosèphe-Rose and the collection is a fitting tribute to her. In the Joséphine collection, the historic tiara has been reinvented as a range of stunning rings, bracelets, pendants and earrings where sleek lines shine in white, pink or yellow gold, set with diamonds or other gemstones. The elegant Joséphine bracelet in white gold that is paved with diamonds is a definite highlight.

One-of-a-kind pieces are inspired by the legend and allure of the Nine Muses from ancient Greek mythology

Founded by Frederic Boucheron in the 18th century, the French jewellery house is famed for its high-jewellery collections that have caught the attention of royalty and celebrities alike. One of the best collections from Boucheron today is the iconic Splendeurs de Russie inspired by the company’s rich history in Russia where the renowned Romanov family were counted as regular clients. The stunning Splendeurs de Russie necklace can be worn as a tiara with a circular choker featuring baguette-cut diamonds that open out like droplets of water but, for a more subtle effect, earrings from the same collection are an excellent choice. Complementing the art of calligraphy from China, the dramatic Calligraphique necklace from the Pinceau de Chine collection blends perfectly with the UAE’s own appreciation for the art. In both the choker and the pendant, the pear-cut designs are reminiscent of a paintbrush tip drawing lines between the halves of rock crystal and diamonds. Where: The Galleria / Contact: 02 6166999

Bulgari Since 1884, Italian house Bulgari has built an unrivalled reputation for its meticulously crafted fine jewellery. The MVSA collection is a worthy addition to the house’s jewellery portfolio, breaking convention with a bold yet refined range of colourful rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings. All 26 of the one-of-a-kind pieces are inspired by the legend and allure of the Nine Muses from ancient Greek mythology who were said to rule over the arts and sciences. In MVSA, the Takhti egg-shaped cut is reminiscent of the grandeur of India’s Mughal empire which has been revived by Bulgari. It remains a key focus of the pieces where precious and semi-precious stones including blue topaz, amethyst, onyx, rubellite, diamonds and mother of pearl combine in striking colour combinations. All gold used in the collection’s pieces are issued with a ‘fairmined’ certificate to guarantee its production in the highest ethical and environmental standards and diamonds are sourced from respected firms. Garrard The world’s oldest jewellery house has draped royalty and celebrities with beautiful ornaments for nearly 300 years. The new Albermarle Collection is another jewel in Garrard’s crown with the range of fine and high jewellery inspired by one of the most famous tiaras in history: the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara. The tiara was originally crafted by Garrard and gifted to Princess Victoria Mary of Teck in 1893. After that, it was gifted to Her Majesty Queen Mary, on the occasion of her marriage to the Duke of York, later

SANDRA TINARI

Since the landmark announcement that Dubai won the right to host the expo in 2020, both the emirate and nation have been enthused by news of exciting developments, across all sectors, from transport to retail, hospitality and infrastructure. As a model of modernity and cultural diversity, Dubai has long been an exhilarating destination. However, with Dubai Expo 2020 on the horizon, the city is abuzz as host preparations gain momentum for the global event. “The win was the result of a collective national effort and consequently continues to be a tremendous source of pride for UAE leadership, government and our people. “It highlighted the strong cohesion and solidarity that exists between all levels of our diverse and multicultural society. People recognise the unique opportunity that hosting a World Expo offers. The fact that Dubai Expo 2020 will coincide with the UAE’s Golden Jubilee celebrations makes this even more significant,” says HE Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State, managing director of Dubai Expo 2020 Higher Committee and director general of Dubai Expo 2020 Office.

Dubai Expo 2020 will be the first world exposition to be held in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia (MENASA) region. With the theme, Connecting Minds, Creating The Future, it aims to be a platform for connectivity to help pioneer new partnerships for growth and sustainability for the future. The bid win, alongside Dubai’s Tourism Vision 2020 plan, has helped to launch a wave of public and private projects across the city, as Dubai races to welcome more than 20 million visitors annually by 2020. A raft of exciting new developments in the pipeline includes the extension of the

Mall of the World has also been announced, a megamall predicted to be four times the size of The Dubai Mall, in the Al Sufouh area of the city and scheduled for completion within 10 years. Another inspirational development is Dubai Design District, known as d3. The sprawling creative hub in Business Bay, is set to bring together artists, designers and some of the world’s most luxurious labels into one vibrant community. Its first phase is due to go live in early 2015. Promising a fun destination for all the family, Dubai Parks and Resorts will comprise three theme parks: motiongate Dubai, Bollywood Parks Dubai and Legoland Dubai scheduled for completion

in 2016. Meanwhile, The Dubai Canal –an AED1.76 billion project – will link Dubai Creek across the city to the Arabian Gulf. “Dubai Expo 2020 is of course a unique opportunity to further showcase the microcosm that we are of the world around us, of what we have to offer and, perhaps more importantly, as the first expo in MENASA, it is also a chance for our region to position itself as a meaningful and substantive thought leader on the global stage,” says HE Al Hashimy. As construction on the expo site is scheduled to begin in 2015, the Dubai Expo 2020 team is focused squarely on the programming of the global showcase, working tirelessly behind the scenes to deliver a world-class

For the team, the event will deliver wide-ranging opportunities and platforms to highlight all that Dubai, and the UAE, has to offer. “To this end, Dubai Expo 2020 is not just an opportunity to invite the world to Dubai; it is an opportunity to capitalise on this incredible convening power to actually make things happen. not just on Dubai and the UAE, but the entire region as a whole.” Recently, event preparations took a significant step forward when the Higher Committee appointed a HOK-Arup architectural and engineering consortium to complete detailed master planning work for the Expo 2020 site, which will be located in the southern end of Dubai at Jebel Ali, equidistant between the city and the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi. “The design layout, environment and content of the master plan will provide all visitors with a totally immersive and educational experience, which will be an unforgettable journey of exploration and discovery,” says HE Helal Saeed Almarri, director general, Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing; CEO, Dubai World Trade Centre and Dubai Expo 2020 Higher Committee member. The site will cover 438 hectares with a gated zone occupying 150 hectares. The overall design inspiration comes from vernacular Arabian architecture, complemented by the latest technologies and sustainability techniques. The site will accommodate up to 300,000 people on the busiest days.

HE Almarri adds: “It is often said that a city is forever changed when it hosts a megaevent and its success is judged by the city’s ability to prolong the impact of this event on its society. From the outset, one of the overriding strategies for Dubai Expo 2020 has been to create a strong and lasting legacy for the UAE, the MENASA region and the global community as a whole.”

Cultural connection Go beyond the traditional exhibition experience and discover a treasure trove of art, photography and literature at one of the city’s bijou bistros

The notion of combining a cultural space with a place where friends, family and like-minded people come together is centuries old. One of the famous examples of an artistic hub can be found in Paris in the late 18th century. As its intellectuals thrived, salons sprung up all over the city where artists, writers and thinkers gathered to share both their work and ideas over food, drinks and convivial company. The concept soon spread throughout Europe and the salon became a vehicle for not only great advancements in the arts but also social change, as communities came together. This combination of the intellectual and the social is an idea that has recently resurfaced in cafés and restaurants where the artistic offering is an essential part of the experience. In Dubai, a quirky collection of venues offers a bridge between the formality of visiting a gallery and the desire to enjoy a more relaxed connection with art and culture. Full of character, the alternative spaces offer not only a relaxing haven far from the bustle of the city, but a chance to spend some time and truly digest the work presented. Whether it’s taking in some iconic photography in the heart of Dubai’s historic creek district or settling down to a good read in an eatery dedicated to literature, there are plenty of places to meet kindred spirits and unwind with culture in mind.

Fresh ideas One of the newest additions to Dubai’s cluster of cultural cafés is Creekside. Located in the heart of the city’s oldest quarter, it has already become something of a focal point for people exploring the atmospheric area. “Dubai Creek was the natural choice when it came to the location for Creekside. This is where Dubai started and this is where its future is. You get that sense, no matter where you are sitting in the space. You can see the water and are continuously captivated and engaged by the environment outside,” says Sarah Malki, programme manager at Creekside Dubai. Just a few moments from Dubai Museum and overlooking Dubai Creek itself, the space is at the centre of old Dubai, where the city’s roots lie in the fishing and trading that took place in and around this iconic stretch of water. Both a café and an exhibition area, Creekside showcases the best of contemporary art and design while keeping a firm focus on representing the region’s rich heritage.

“Creekside focuses on local art, architecture, culture, design and heritage and acts as a platform for talent from the area. Our aim is to encourage people to engage and evolve with the culture here, rather than just observe it. The team at Creekside comprises creative entrepreneurs in the culinary, creative or urban arts environments. We perceive this space as a creative and cultural platform and wish to grow it as such,” says Malki. In an exceptional coup for the space, Creekside has secured a permanent exhibition of the Pitt Rivers Museum Wilfred Thesiger Photographic Collection, in tribute to the travel writer and explorer who photographed the region through his desert adventures during the early 1900s. “The owners have long been fond of Wilfred Thesiger’s photographs and writings. The

collection came from the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford, England and we now hold the right to house a 10-year exhibition at this space. What’s great about these photos is that they really allow you to identify how quickly Dubai and the region has developed. These images allow you to travel through time, gaining a glimpse of the past,” says Malki. With contemporary Emirati cuisine and a host of cultural workshops and programmes, there’s no typical visitor either. “We see all kinds of people at Creekside, which enriches conversation, dialogue and exchange of information on local and global culture. “The creative scene in Dubai is young, but quickly picking up. There is a demand among the community to grow the creative and cultural scene and we can see that through the turn-out at our events. We frequently collaborate with local talent and it’s great to see them use our platform to grow and connect with other creatives. It’s also great to see how much young talent there is in the UAE,” says Malki. The concept at Creekside is all about encouraging and supporting the region’s talent through its variety of programmes, talks and walks. Malki says: “During the cooler months, we are planning to host markets, photography tours and outdoors concerts. We want people to come down and participate in activities that engage them with the surrounding area.”

Tea time Also located in the heart of Dubai’s historical district, Arabian Tea House is a destination to enjoy a refreshing blend that also offers a true taste of local character. Situated among the traditional wind tower architecture of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, the venue is a treat for visitors who find their way into its colourful courtyard setting. Formerly known as Basta Art Café, it was established more than 12 years ago in this old quarter that was once the original settlement of Dubai. Arabian Tea House can be found in the courtyard of an elegant wind tower building and is a truly picturesque setting in which to relax and unwind, affording the opportunity to take in a sense of the old part of the city. An Arabian tea house was a place where people would come together and, faithful to the original idea, the traditional element of Arabic culture can be enjoyed. There is

An eclectic exploration of Dubai’s cultural side is offered at The Archive. Its location is part of the attraction, nestled among Safa Park’s lush greenery. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the vistas, affording an alternative view of Burj Khalifa. Both a library and café, it holds a selection of books on Islamic art and history complemented by a lively programme of talks and art exhibitions. “In a Middle Eastern city where people of various cultures and backgrounds come together, Dubai provides the perfect backdrop to experience culturally diverse and intellectually stimulating conversations about art and literature. The establishment of a dynamic space where such conversations can be held is, therefore, an important and even natural endeavor,” says Bethany Hooper, content co-ordinator, The Archive. The space is dedicated to Middle Eastern and North African literature and it also provides a platform for a lively cultural community. The Archive is the first specialised

library of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region, sourcing most of its books directly from publishers around the world. Events in and around the space are also an integral part of its offering. “Through our different events, such as book launches, art workshops and vintage markets, we reach out to multiple audiences and people of all ages. People come to The Archive now to experience activities and events that are new to Dubai. Our events are what set us apart from being just a restaurant. We want to stimulate conversation and creativity,” says Hooper. She adds: “Taking advantage of the location in Safa Park, The Archive’s programming includes many outdoor activities and events, such as yoga, pilates, football, outdoor film screenings and musical performances. This beautiful, verdant location means it feels like a retreat from the city. “We hope to build on the audience we are lucky enough to have already gained and to collaborate with more international organisations to bring further stimulating events and activities to Dubai.”

Making tracks As the Dubai Tram picks up its first passengers this month, it opens up a new way to take in the city WORDS BY

CATHERINE LANGLEY

The image of a tram effortlessly spiriting passengers across a busy city is one that conjures an almost romantic association of travel in times past. A simple and effective transportation system that is also viewed as a clean alternative to urban travel, many modern European cities can be easily traversed by hopping on and off tram cars as they criss-cross bustling streets. As Dubai strives to become a metropolis that is both interconnected and environmentally aware, the unveiling of the Dubai Tram this month is viewed by many as a major step forward. Spanning 10.6 kilometres, the tram will run along Al Sufouh Road and Jumeirah Beach Road to Dubai Marina. The first phase includes a fleet of 11 trams that will operate along the route, passing through at least 30 junctions, crossings and intersections, as the trams connect with Dubai Metro and the Palm Jumeirah Monorail. With a planned launch date of November 11, the new network will boast 11 stations and with them, a whole new way to see the city. Concierge presents a guide to exploring all that Dubai has to offer by tram.

Dubai Marina – exit at Station 5

KEEPING IT RAIL

Dubai Marina is undoubtedly one of the city’s most dazzling developments. Exit at station 5 for a veritable hive of activity, the central manmade lagoon is always buzzing with shiny white yachts bobbing on the water and, a busy network of shops, bars and restaurants line the marina’s edge. No other neighbourhood in the city can quite match the lively atmosphere. In the heart of the space is Dubai Marina Mall which can be reached by exiting the tram at Station 4. This waterside shopping mall is home to high-street chains, designer jewellery brands and a boutique cinema with six ‘business-class experience’ screens. If you want to explore outdoors, head along the pleasant waterfront walkways where you’ll find a plethora of shops and cafés. Then, for arts and crafts, check out the Marina Market, which runs from 10am to 10pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays and 10am to 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays at Marina Promenade near the mall. For dining, the choices are endless. Pier 7, the gleaming cylindrical structure next to Dubai Marina Mall is a one-stop-shop for eating and drinking with seven restaurants including international eatery Fumé, Mexican O Cacti and the latest addition The Scene from British celebrity chef Simon Rimmer.

Phase One will see 11 trams run for an expected 20 hours each day, taking 30 minutes to ride the entire route.

6

Trams are 44 metres long with a 408-passenger capacity and a maximum speed of 50 kilometres per hour. The service runs on ground-level power supply with no overhead cables and is the world’s first to use a Supervised Vehicle Operation (SVO) system to assist the driver. The trams will have gold and silver classes, as well as space for women and children. Phase Two is scheduled for completion in November 2015, with Burj Al Arab and Mall of the Emirates as two of the stations planned.

It may be hard to imagine, but just 10 years ago, one of Dubai’s most iconic sights Palm Jumeirah was still to be created. Fast-forward a decade and where once was ocean, there’s a 12-square-mile manmade archipelago that is home to a vast array of attractions. Much like the rest of Dubai’s newer developments, Palm Jumeirah is a sight to behold. A palm-shaped island with fronds reaching out into the Arabian Gulf, everything from the spellbinding drive down the trunk with its views of luxury resort Atlantis The Palm, Dubai, and a host of five-star hotels to the pristine arcs of white sand beach inspire awe. Dubai Tram will connect to Palm Jumeirah via the Palm Monorail, an elevated train that currently runs the length of the island. One of the archipelago’s main draws is Atlantis The Palm, Dubai, where Aquaventure, the Middle East’s largest water park can be found. The resort also features Dolphin Bay, a sophisticated dolphin habitat where visitors can swim with the charismatic creatures, as well as a host of gourmet dining options. At night, Palm Jumeirah comes to life with buzzing bars and restaurants taking centre stage. Baˉ Restaurant & Lounge at Fairmont The Palm is a favourite for Chinese cuisine while those in the mood for Michelin-starred fare can look forward to the expertise of Heinz Beck, who recently set up Social By Heinz Beck at Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah. Whether looking for fine dining, world-class shopping or simply to explore the city’s sights, it’s all now a tram ride away.

The stage is set and the world is watching. Thousands of spectators at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi will be counting down to the official start of the final race in the Formula 1 calendar that brings to a close what has been one of the most dramatic seasons in the sport's history. All eyes are now on the 2014 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that takes place from November 21 to 23. It all comes down to the drivers' starting positions on the grid, as they rev their engines and prepare for the first turn on the track. This is a defining moment that could mean either victory or defeat

74

Designed by German racer and engineer Hermann Tilke, Yas Marina Circuit, Yas Island, presents one of the most formidable challenges for talented Formula 1 drivers, where their endurance and skills are put to the test at every harrowing turn. The track features nine right turns and 11 left turns and is one of the few venues to run in an anti-clockwise direction. The challenging 5.55-kilometre, 21-turn circuit configuration currently boasts a record lap time of a mere minute and 40 seconds

The 2014 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is famous for being the only twilight race of the annual Formula 1 season. One of the most dramatic moments is when race cars emerge from dark to light through the strategically positioned pit lane exit – a tunnel running beneath the track – and a striking reflection of the overall race moving from day to night

Now in its sixth year, the highly anticipated 2014 grand prix has earned the reputation and respect of the sporting world for its stellar organisation as well as the specifications of the iconic race track. Not only is the race in Abu Dhabi the sole place where fans can experience the magic of a day-to-night race, but it also boasts top speeds of 320 kilometres per hour and average speeds of 195 kilometres per hour. The longest straight on the F1 calendar, the track encourages awe-inspiring acceleration as well as tight corners for overtaking, making it one of the longest and most demanding in the world

77

The action-packed Formula 1 calendar this year started on March 16 in Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia, with 18 stops in countries around the world including Bahrain, China, Italy, Brazil and others before reaching Abu Dhabi. This year sees the most exciting Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in history. Not only is Abu Dhabi hosting the season finale once again but the race will also offer double points to the drivers, guaranteeing fierce competition till the last second. The thrills are complemented by award-winning entertainment, autograph signings and other top activities, which means there's only one place to be in November – Abu Dhabi

From the world’s richest horse race, the Dubai World Cup to the 2014 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and a whole host of big-ticket events in between, each year brings an exciting calendar of events. With exceptional golf venues peppered throughout the emirate, Dubai has become a major destination for spectators, amateurs and the sport’s stars. This month’s DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, from November 21 to 23, is the highlight of the golfing season and sees an impressive roster of international talent take to the greens at Jumeirah Golf Estates in front of thousands of eager spectators. The Race To Dubai begins with the curtain-raising South African Open Championship in November and is played across all five continents through to the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai. Swedish star Henrik Stenson faces intense rivalry once again during this year’s final tournament. The formidable line-up includes previous winner Rory McIlroy, Finland’s Mikko Ilonen and South Africa’s Ernie Els. The stage is set for an incredible showcase of golfing skill, world-class facilities and above all, a thoroughly entertaining day out. The returning champion Henrik Stenson enjoyed a fantastic victory during last year’s tournament, taking the US$8 million prize purse and coveted trophy. The world number three, who began playing golf as a child and lives in Dubai, was overawed by his sensational win on home turf. “Last year was one of the greatest years of my career, capped off perfectly by winning the DP World Tour Championship and Race to Dubai titles at Jumeirah Golf Estates. I managed to do something very, very special and I was just very, very pleased with the way I played,” says Stenson. Acknowledging the formidable competition from the other marquee players taking part, he says: “I knew it was going to be a tough week as I knew guys like Justin Rose and Ian Poulter would come charging at me and try to catch me. In the end, it was a great summer for me and a dream finish to an incredible season. Nick Taratt has spent most of his life in Dubai and has been at the forefront of managing major global golf events for 25 years. Having previously staged the Dubai Desert Classic in the 1990s, Taratt was responsible for inaugurating the very first DP World Tour Championship, Dubai. “I was always a keen amateur golfer and played in my younger days. I applied through an advertisement in Golf Illustrated for the position as Tournament Controller for the PGA at The Belfry in England and was offered the job. It’s now 30 years later and here we are in Dubai, still in golf administration,” explains Taratt. For Taratt, Dubai’s first-class facilities make it a fantastic destination for premium golf events. He says: “The facilities here are among the best around and that is why I first

4

came here in 1990. The service levels, quality of playing surfaces on the golf courses and quality of facilities are up there with the finest. “For the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, we have the best players on a great golf course in excellent condition. Also the free ticket initiative from year one set the tone for the personality of the tournament attracting both golfers and non-golfers to enjoy the week.

We are also always trying to improve what we do, how we do it and what we deliver,” says Taratt. Looking to the tournament’s future, he adds: “I would love to see it continue to grow. Damian Turner and his team have the mammoth task of making sure every stage of the tournament runs according to plan with responsibility for all spectator structures, grandstands, hospitality areas and the Championship Village. With a wealth of experience setting up and staging golf tournaments in Asia and a stint working on the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2003, Turner says planning is crucial. “Making sure your planning is 100 percent and then keeping to your build schedule to complete the construction on time are absolutely vital factors, as are location, access, weather, time and budget. “We try to add attractions around the course so spectators do not crowd into any one place at the same time. crowd management have to be meticulous to ensure there are no problems during the week. We also put a lot of time into the design and comfort of the Championship Chalet, sponsors’ chalets, official areas and public areas. The chalets in the hospitality pavilion this year are our best yet.” For Turner, the hard work and months of strategising are well worth the effort when the event ends in success. “Seeing the enjoyment that players, sponsors, spectators and hospitality guests experience during their visit is the most satisfying aspect for me,” he says. “If I have done my job well; that should be the end result. “Many people I speak to look forward to the tournament but there are always small improvements that can be made to enhance the experience in the future.I hope the championship continues for years to come and that we can encourage new spectators to attend each year.”

The general manager, Jumeirah Golf Estates Neal Graham is at the helm of Jumeirah Golf Estates where the Fire and Earth courses, created by golfing legend Greg Norman, are home to the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai. Originally from Northern Ireland, Graham fell in love with the game as a child and by the time he was 23, became a qualified PGA Professional. For Graham, Dubai’s facilities are perfect to stage such a major tournament. “Both amateurs and professionals are quite spoilt with the quality of golf facilities on offer in Dubai and the UAE,” he says. “As well our two championship courses, Fire and Earth, we are very proud of our recently opened state-of-the-art European Tour Performance Institute.

“Apart from the ability to attract the very best professional golfers in the world, I believe the success of our event is the atmosphere created for spectators. The tournament has been able to appeal to avid golf fans as well as people who would not normally attend golfing events.” Preparation for the tournament begins at least eight months before it is scheduled to take place as staging areas are agreed, professional and amateur associated events are planned and areas such as car parking, access, hospitality and ticketing are considered. The preparation of the golf course is masterminded and led by Mark Tupling, agronomy manager, who has been involved with the tournament since its inception in 2009. Graham explains: “Mark works with the European Tour team and director of tour operations, David Garland, to ensure that tournament playing conditions are met. “Preparations commence almost one year out. Mark and David look at how the course plays to see what changes can be made with regards to playability. Roughly three months prior to the event the European Tour team returns to assess course conditions. During the event itself, the quality of all playing surfaces are maintained at least once and, in the most part, twice per day, before and after the golfers have played. With this model in place, course conditioning has improved year on year.”

Julie Letherby is responsible for the 500 daily hospitality guests hosted at the tournament. She came to Dubai from Scotland over 10 years ago where she worked at the prestigious Turnberry luxury golf resort. “At Turnberry, I worked on high-profile golf events from a banqueting management perspective and here in Dubai I spent six years with Meydan for the Dubai World Cup from a hospitality sales and ticketing perspective,” she says. “Preparation for the tournament starts straight after the previous DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, with a detailed debrief with each of the caterers where the way forward is established. We are constantly looking at ways to improve it, assessing what was popular and looking at current food trends. “I work closely with three contractors during the tournament when we become much like a family: Jumeirah Hospitality, Jumeirah Golf Estates Catering and CEO Event hostesses. Each are experts in their fields and the co-ordination is crucial to ensuring hospitality guests have a great day with good food and service while watching world-class golf.”

Dubai is fast gaining a reputation as one of the world’s top destinations for major league sporting events and at the heart of the impressive offering is horse racing. Moreover, each year in the emirate, the illustrious Dubai World Cup and its preceding season of events, attracts the horse-racing elite from around the world to compete for huge prizes. One of the biggest events on Dubai’s calendar since the launch of the race in 1996, the Dubai World Cup celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The milestone means more horses, more races and even greater prize money. Yet, the big race on March 28, 2015 isn’t the only attraction. Leading up to it is a season packed with exciting spectacles.

Race days The season kicks off on November 6 with the first of eight ‘Racing at Meydan’ meetings. Hosted at Dubai’s purpose-built Meydan Racecourse which boasts a 1,750-metre allweather tapeta surface track and a 2,400metre turf track, the races showcase the skills of thoroughbreds trained by local stables and trainers. The events are excellent opportunities to witness and support the UAE’s greatest up-and-coming talents as they work their way up to the premier league. The countdown to March begins with the launch of Dubai World Cup Carnival on January 8, consisting of 11 race meetings spread over a three-month season. The series of races carries a total prize value of

around US$38 million (AED140 million) and offers racehorse trainers a comprehensive preparation programme, carried out on Meydan Racecourse’s dirt and turf tracks. As with any great performance, there is a dress rehearsal. Super Saturday on March 7 is the last race before the finale, providing competitors with a final golden opportunity to test their skills against the best of the best. Completing the 2014-2015 UAE race season is a number of additional races hosted at Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club, Al Nakheel Equestrian Club in Al Ain, Jebel Ali Racecourse and Sharjah Racecourse; events which are all within the build-up to the Dubai World Cup.

Prize money While the Dubai World Cup Carnival, from January 9 to March 28, offers a huge prize purse given out over a number of races, the Dubai World Cup race is what attracts the focus of eyes around the world. For several years, the key race of the day has gained the title of the ‘richest horse race in the world’, beating rivals such as The Grand National and the Melbourne Cup by millions of dirhams. The renowned race carries a US$10 million (AED37 million) prize for the winner, while other races on the day such as Dubai Duty Free Stakes and Dubai Sheema Classic, bring the day’s total prize value to US$29 million (AED107 million).

Martin Talty, Dubai Racing Club’s international manager, says: “This 20th Dubai World Cup milestone means we are entering a big season at Dubai Racing Club. The prize purses for the Dubai Sheema Classic and the Dubai Duty Free were both increased to US$6 million (AED22 million) each last season to mark the occasion and we are confident in attracting, if not equal numbers, then even greater numbers of international competitors for the coming season.”

Names to watch Each year, Meydan Racecourse plays host to some of the biggest names in world racing. The 2014 Dubai World Cup race was won by Godolphin’s African Story, trained by Saeed bin Suroor and jockeyed by Silvestre de Sousa. This was a sixth win for the Godolphin stables, founded by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president of the UAE and ruler of Dubai. Other former winners include Japanese superstars Gentildonna and Just A Way, winners of the Dubai Sheema Classic and Dubai Duty Free, respectively. Amber Sky and Sterling City from Hong Kong are also worthy contenders with previous Dubai race wins under their belts.

Meydan Grandstand is one of the largest in the world with a capacity of 60,000. Avoid the crowds and watch this season’s races in style by booking a private box overlooking the stands and the racecourse for a sensational view of all the action. A variety of tailored hospitality packages are available at The Meydan Hotel’s top-class restaurants, lounges and private suites, all of which boast unbeatable views. EXPERIENCE

A place to...

Shop for souvenirs Discover a host of authentic buys and plenty of character at Bur Dubai Souk

GOLD SOUK The pinnacle of the city’s gold offering, the Gold Souk is a one-stop shop for beautiful jewellery and trinkets. Winding corridors meet gleaming halls where boutiques and stalls laden with precious wares nestle beneath carved wooden coverings.

SPICE SOUK The Spice Souk’s numerous stalls are home to myriad influences from all corners of the world. Every sense is engaged during a stroll through this open-air marketplace amid rich colours, bold scents and fresh flavours. Herbs, spices, fragrances and flavoured tobaccos are among the exotic goods on offer.

The souk, a gathering place for trade and socialising, has been an important part of life in the Middle East for thousands of years. Bur Dubai Souk is one of the oldest in the city and is a wonderful place to visit for those looking for an alternative shopping experience. Browsing the stalls lining its meandering corridors provides a fantastic opportunity to uncover authentic wares you wouldn’t usually find in the city’s super-malls. Bur Dubai Souk is one of the best places in the city to find handmade, bespoke items and unique souvenirs. From bejewelled clothing and swathes of colourful fabric to brightly coloured stained-glass lamps and gem-encrusted accessories, the market is a veritable treasure trove of artisanal wares. A visit also provides a wonderful opportunity to soak up some local culture and gain a fascinating insight into the city’s character. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the experience is found in interactions with the market’s vendors who are happy to share their local knowledge. A lively debate over prices is also encouraged as part of the outing. Carved ceilings lend an authentic Arabian feel and add to the atmosphere. Bur Dubai Souk is close to Dubai’s historic quarter, Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, adjacent to Dubai Creek. To continue the experience, hop aboard a traditional boat known as an abra and sail across Dubai Creek to uncover still more vibrant souks.

PERFUME SOUK Enticing scents are arranged in row upon row of handcrafted, coloured glass bottles and a heady mixture of aromas fills the air as you walk around the Perfume Souk. An array of ouds is offered from traditional local blends to unusual modern combinations.

Amongst Dubai’s many world-famous attractions lies a largely unexplored artistic quarter where understated industrial units belie a vibrant cultural scene waiting to be discovered. Al Quoz is brimming with art galleries, museums and studios as the creative space has grown in recent years to become Dubai’s main cultural hub. Artists gather here to present work and exchange ideas at around 20 galleries, which represent an eclectic mix of international styles and genres. A focal point of the artistic activity here is Alserkal Avenue, which occupies a one-block radius and is made up of myriad interconnected streets. Renowned exhibition spaces such as Carbon 12 Dubai, Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde and Green Art Gallery call Alserkal Avenue home while the area also boasts the first private museum in the area, Salsali Private Museum. Elsewhere, The Courtyard is an eclectic space where visitors can expect film screenings, art workshops and a weekly farmers’ and crafts market alongside regular exhibitions.

Dubai is awash with water sports to cool down Kite surfing This sport is so popular in the UAE that the government has allocated a number of special kite-surfing beaches that cater to enthusiasts including Jumeirah's Kite Beach and Jebel Ali Beach. When the wind picks up, kite surfers head to the popular spots to harness the power of the wind and reach speeds of up to 50 knots while performing jaw-dropping tricks. Paddle boarding When Gulf conditions are calm, paddle boarders take to the water. A number of areas prove particularly popular for the sport, such as around the world-famous Burj Al Arab and off the coast of Palm Jumeirah. Scuba Diving The UAE is a haven for underwater explorers and the coastal waters offer a variety of diving opportunities. Divers can uncover deep sea wrecks off the coast of Palm Jumeirah or explore coral reefs inhabited by hundreds of species of sea life in neighbouring emirate Fujairah.

WINE AND DINE IN DUBAI Although the UAE is a Muslim country, alcohol is permitted in several emirates including Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Wine, Champagne and spirits are available in most five-star hotels, but be warned, as there is zero tolerance to drink-driving and being drunk in public is a crime, both punishable with a fine and, in more serious cases, imprisonment.

My Dubai Dubai-based jewellery designer Marwa Kharsa shares her city highlights

}

1

1 The Dubai Fountain 2 Spice Souk

I moved to Dubai about 10 years ago from Atlanta, Georgia, in America. My initial impression was that I would not find much to do besides work, but looking back I realise how wrong I was. The UAE is such a fun place to live and has inspired me to pursue my dream of becoming a jewellery designer. Basing myself in Dubai has been amazing for my career as head designer of MarMar. The constant training that I receive and new techniques I learn for casting and setting jewellery pieces is never ending. There are many craftsman here that are the sixth generation in their specific field and you could not find that anywhere else in the world. Dubai is a diverse city that’s continuously growing. All the pastimes you usually enjoy can be found in the city from shopping and great food, to culture, adventure and nature. I love spending time outdoors. One of my favourite things is to go mountain biking or to hit the bike track at Al Qudra Road; a gorgeous 18-kilometre stretch in the desert where, if you are lucky, you can catch a glimpse of some wildlife. Every other Friday I

usually try out new restaurants with a friend. Toko at Vida Downtown Dubai has the best Japanese food in the city. My favourite dish is tuna tartar and grilled avocado. When I have friends and family to stay I take them on a walking tour of the gold and spice souks in Deira and the fish market. The souks are great places to enjoy the sights and sounds of old Dubai. For a beach day, I go with friends and family to Fujairah or to the mangroves in Abu Dhabi. I also enjoy taking them on a desert safari to the dunes outside of the city. The best company I’ve found to book this through is Platinum Heritage. Old Land Rovers take guests deep into a conservation area for a buffet dinner and entertainment and, if you choose to stay the night, you can wake to a traditional Bedouin breakfast the next morning. My favourite memory of being in the city is sitting at The Dubai Mall by The Dubai Fountain with my entire family. The music was good and the entire crowd around us was really happy. My family live all around the world, so being together doing something really simple was an awesome experience.

I love spending time outdoors. One of my favourite things is to go mountain biking or hit the bike track at Al Qudra Road
