LONDON CALLING ——— Concierge meets Jeremy Hackett, the dapper designer behind the eponymous British label
Classic never goes out of style. Just ask Jeremy Hackett, co-founder and chairman of a fashion brand that’s often regarded as the de facto standard in quintessential British style. This is impressive considering the brand was born out of weekend work. “When I was still at school, I had a Saturday job in the local tailor’s shop in Bristol where I was brought up. When my father read yet another of my bad school reports he said, ‘if you don’t pull your socks up you will end up working in a shop’. Fortunately that is exactly what happened,” Jeremy tells Concierge. At the age of 19, the budding designer moved to London and worked at King’s Road, one of the city’s most fashionable districts. It wasn’t long before he was offered a position on Savile Row, a place where he really began to learn more about the art of tailoring. As a hobby, Hackett stopped by flea markets and bought second-hand clothes with vintage appeal that he then sold on to friends. The pastime became so profitable he gave up his post in Savile Row and focused on transforming his hobby into a business along with friend Ashley Lloyd-Jennings. “With no business plan, no marketing plan and very little money I opened the first shop in the New Kings Road, which my bank manager at the time very encouragingly declared to be a retailer’s graveyard. I was happy to prove him wrong. It was six months before I felt confident to put my name above the door. Within three years it

moved from second hand clothes to making new clothes, following the principles of the vintage pieces that had proved to be so successful. It was at that moment that I thought perhaps this could be the beginning of the Hackett brand. Thank goodness I never pulled my socks up,” says Jeremy. Using extensive knowledge of British men’s style, Hackett began to produce its own line of fashion and accessories in 1985 with a collection that featured classic cuts but with bold use of patterns and colours that presented a refreshing take on menswear at the time. Decades later, despite many more stores opening – both regionally and internationally – little has changed on the style front. “I think our approach to classical dressing appeals to men who wish to look stylish and who like to invest in their wardrobe, but who do not wish to necessarily be at the forefront of fashion. I like to think that we look at fashion and take from it only what we think works for Hackett. It is important to have and maintain a point of view and to understand that you can’t be all things to all men,” says Jeremy. While a lot has changed in the world over the years, demand for classic elegance has never wavered, and it’s an exciting time to be in menswear fashion. “I have noticed in recent years that men are much more likely to look at fashion; they seem to be more adventurous and prepared to mix things up such as combining classic tailoring with a touch of

sportswear. There are many more men’s magazines offering advice on how to coordinate your clothes and of course the internet has generally made men more confident and willing to make an effort. In the past men, on the whole, bought clothes because they needed them. Today they buy clothes because they like them,” he explains. There’s a lot to like in Hackett’s Autumn/Winter 2015 collection, where Jeremy draws on his time at Savile Row taking inspiration from British tailor Tommy Nutter who had an unusual method of putting clothes together by pairing different sized checks. In the Hackett collection, three piece suits feature varying checks and pinstripes and the traditional flannel suit presents contrasting pockets and elbow patches. Wool gets its time in the spotlight as well this season. “In January we held a fashion show titled ‘Sheep Shape & London Fashion’ that featured a capsule range to celebrate all that is wool. We worked with the illustrious British Fox Brothers & Co and I particularly like the way we mixed up plaids on suits and the army style greatcoat with the sheepskin collar is a favourite of mine,” says Jeremy. Every collection is a breath of fresh air, reinventing the classics that British men have grown to know and love. Jeremy explains that inspiration strikes at any time and can be drawn from movies, books, conversations and travelling. Fans are given a sneak peek into his life through his successful Mr. Classic blog. “I do enjoy writing, although, until I was approached by the editor of The Independent On Sunday magazine to write a piece for them, I had barely written more than a thank you note. After I had submitted a trial piece they were so pleased that they gave me a column called Mr. Classic, which ran for about three years. I also like to take photographs and have started to use Instagram which has become quite addictive,” explains Jeremy. While Hackett has a global presence with stores as far afield as China and Peru, as well as regionally in the United Arab Emirates, the brand’s enigmatic founder reveals that they are now keen on introducing British style to the American market. Just don’t expect Hackett dresses or skirts to ever be unveiled by the brand. “As far as womenswear is concerned we have no immediate plans – in fact we have no plans at all,” says Jeremy with a smile. “I think our customers quite enjoy the fact that we are a menswear brand only.” Hackett collections are available at The Dubai Mall. A global community with His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales as a patron, The Campaign for Wool aims to build awareness about the benefits and versatility of wool in fashion, furnishings as well as everyday life. For Wool Week this year, which took place last month from October 5 to 11, the campaign roped in key figures in the wool industry, including British menswear icon Jeremy Hackett, for a promotional series entitled, The Incrediwools.

ART OF FASHION ——— UAE-based designer Rami Al Ali presents a new couture collection to covet
The fashion capitals of France, Italy and America have long been regarded as destinations of inspiration, creativity and style, but the Middle East region is rapidly gaining a reputation for design talent thanks to the rise of couture designers such as Elie Saab, Georges Chakra and Zuhair Murad. They have each crafted a special presence on the world stage and among them is man of the moment, Rami Al Ali, with his show-stealing ethereal style. Born in Deir ez-Zor, a city in east Syria, Rami Al Ali has always been interested in the arts and, as the only son of five children, was introduced to fashion at a young age. While studying visual communications at Damascus’ College of Fine Arts, he made the bold decision to design and present a fashion show as his graduation project, offering a unique take on fine arts through fashion. “I always knew my career would take a creative route. It wasn’t until I prepared for my graduation project, where I decided to conduct a fashion show, that I realised fashion would form a big part of my future. My plan B was to move to the States to continue my studies, however fate decided differently,” says Al Ali.

“MY INSPIR ATION COMES FROM EVERY WHERE AND ANY THING. IT COULD BE A RECENT HOLIDAY DESTINATION OR EVEN A SONG”
In 1995 the fledgling designer moved to the UAE and quickly found himself in the spotlight. He gained a loyal client base through his atelier in Dubai, contributing to the vibrant status the city’s style scene currently enjoys. Over the last decade, Dubai has emerged as something of a regional fashion hub with high-profile events such as Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience and Fashion Forward attracting international talent, while also acting as a showcase for emerging Middle Eastern designers. This provided the perfect environment for Al Ali. “The fashion scene here is definitely growing and becoming stronger. This wasn’t the case a few years ago. We see the investment and initiatives in Dubai, such as d3 (Dubai Design District). Of course, the market is new and not as mature as Paris or New York, but it’s being built and that creates a lot of opportunities,” explains Al Ali. Drawing on a host of sources for inspiration, Al Ali still regards his college professor’s words as the best advice he’s been given, ‘to create something new,

you must get rid of something old’. For the enigmatic designer, the words have rang true and he has strived to innovate wherever possible. “My inspiration comes from everywhere and anything. It could be a recent holiday destination or even a song. Once I’m inspired, more ideas start coming to mind that I then research and keep exploring, moulding into something new. That’s how it all starts and you can see the final result at my shows,” he says. Al Ali is now one of Dubai’s hottest fashion exports. He made his European debut in 2009 when he presented his Spring/Summer couture line at Rome’s AltaRoma Couture Week, and then in Paris at the 2012 Couture Fashion Week. With celebrated couture, bridal and prêt-à-porter collections for women, global attention has seen a number of his pieces coveted by celebrities and socialites. “I’m lucky to have dressed a number of A-list celebrities in recent years including Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland and Jennifer Lopez to name a few, and I’m looking forward to seeing who will wear my dresses this year. I think Sarah Jessica Parker wears couture

very well and it would be great to see her in one of my designs,” says Al Ali. His Autumn/Winter 2015 couture collection was recently showcased in the Empire Room at La Maison Champs Elysées in Paris, his eighth consecutive presentation in the French capital. “Every season, the excitement and procedure never changes. I still get very anxious and thrilled from the moment the models appear on stage and only feel relieved once it’s over. It’s the end and the beginning in the same moment. The collection showcased has been very well received and I’m very happy with the feedback,” says Al Ali. The lavish collection was inspired by the 1950s, when Hollywood’s golden era was at its most glamorous. The designer uses luxurious fabrics, pastel colours, geometric beadwork and volume to present a wistful vintage feel. It’s all about celebrating femininity, which is why demand for Rami Al Ali’s couture shows no sign of slowing down. Priced on request, every dress is tailored to specification and crafted by hand. A dedicated team handles couture orders, which typically involves a couple of appointments and fittings. From the initial brief that takes into account desired fabrics and looks, sketches are then drawn up and fabric swatches produced when the client meets with Al Ali. Details and measurements can be honed further before the dress is crafted and

A couture dress can usually take a couple of months to create, from start to finish. “My signature is always classy and elegant; very feminine. I work with many different women. From younger women who want something cutting-edge, to the older woman who is looking for something sophisticated,” explains Al Ali. When the designer isn’t working on new collections in Dubai or presenting in Paris, he enjoys travelling the world: “I’m very much a city person at heart and I love visiting big cities such as NewYork. I enjoy cosmopolitan places where you can sit in a coffee shop and watch the world go by, taking in people’s behaviour, body language and the way they dress. I also love the relaxed environment of the Mediterranean, in particular the west coast of Italy, south of France and Greek islands. “I like visiting the older areas of Dubai such as the creek. There is a lot of culture and heritage, including art galleries, museums and quaint cafés.This is where Dubai started,” says Al Ali of the city that’s helped define his career. Luxury is paramount at this palatial spa. Nestled within the equally lavish Jumeirah Zabeel Saray, Talise Ottoman Spa takes its aesthetic lead from ancient Turkish splendour with vibrantly coloured mosaics, ornate décor and grand marble finishes creating an instant impression of pure opulence. As far as choice of treatments, men are expertly catered for as all therapies are suited to both men and women. Among the most popular are the spa’s signature treatments. For an indulgent session fit for a king, the Sultan Massage is deeply relaxing and healing as it works to manipulate pressure points and carefully stretch strained muscles. Another one for targeted relief is the Muscle Ease. This intensive massage uses heated cloths soaked in herbs and an ‘oussada’ cushion infused with coriander and scented oils to gently relieve tension and send guests into a deep state of tranquillity. If you’re attending the spa with your partner, why not opt for a VIP couples package, such as the side-by-side Thai massage or couples’ Hammam.
One of the first fully dedicated grooming lounges to launch in the region, 1847 at Grosvenor House Dubai, is generally considered the city’s go-to spot for executive style treatments. Offering everything from moustache trims and colouring to traditional shaves and even a shoeshine service, this sophisticated space, brimming with dark wood and plush leather, really does cover all bases. Head to The Barber Shop where lavish shaves boast luxe after-shave balms and deep cleansing masques, and added extras include head massages and hair conditioning treatments. Here, even the manicures come with the option of an exfoliating scrub. There’s a wide range of body treatments too. The Four Hands Massage uses a blend of techniques performed by two skilled therapists for maximum relaxation, while the Deep Essential SPAball Massage treats deep seated tension by manipulating the muscles with a customised golf ball and its SPAball Kaddy. There’s also a boutique stocked with high-end grooming products.

ON TRACK ——— The stage is set for the 2015 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit
65
The largest crowd ever seen at Yas Marina Circuit cheered Lewis Hamilton to victory at last year’s Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, bringing to a close another dramatic season with three days of track action and spectacular off-track activities for enthusiasts
SINCE ITS ADDITION TO THE F1 SEASON IN 2009, THE FOR MUL A 1 ETIHAD AIRWAYS ABU DHABI GR AND PRIX AT YAS M ARINA CIRCUIT HAS BEEN A CROWD FAVOURITE
In a split second, it’s over. There’s a moment of silence as the crowd looks around in disbelief before giving a deafening roar that could give the turbocharged V6 engines a run for their money. Then, the frenzied audience is on its feet, cheering as Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton clinches the F1 drivers’ championship for a second time at the 2014 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. As the jubilation dies down and visitors head out into the night, the team at Yas Marina Circuit already has plans in place for the next edition. The 2015 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has taken months of careful preparation and, from November 27 to 29, is set to be another sellout with thousands of enthusiasts eager to witness the action live in the UAE capital. Venue manager at Abu Dhabi Motorsport Management (ADMM), Hesham Mohammed Al Junaibi led the team responsible for delivering the
66
most successful F1 to date last year, with its largest ever crowd of 60,000. This time around he’s once again spearheading efforts to stage the high-octane show. From the planning and implementation of all transportation, to crowd management, health and safety during the prestigious fixture and coordinating logistical planning - much of the responsibility for the race weekend rests with Al Junaibi. “On event days, I’ll be at the venue usually three hours before the event starts. I spend most of my time with my team, being informed about every angle involved from transportation to safety. I’ll also spend time at the main operations centre where we ensure everything is in order before giving the green light to open the gates to the public,” explains Al Junaibi. An event of this magnitude is logistically complex and involves several governmental bodies, from the Department of Transport to the Abu Dhabi Tourism
& Culture Authority and many other organisations. Yas Marina Circuit is owned by the Executive Affairs Authority of the government of Abu Dhabi and operated by ADMM. With over 150 full-time employees and hundreds of part-time workers and volunteers during the Formula 1 race weekend, the focus is always on delivering the best visitor experience. “Before the races begin, I’m still leading my team and thinking of crowd management and evacuation, but it always comes together and the event is one of the most successful on the calendar,” says Al Junaibi. Since its addition to the F1 season in 2009, the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has been a crowd favourite as it’s the only day-andnight race and has hosted dramatic season finales back to back over the last few years. Faisal Al Sahlawi, head of business development at ADMM, was part of the team that helped deliver the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix edition.

One of Al Sahlawi’s many achievements includes launching Yas Central – an entertainment hub that offers everything from driving experiences and official merchandise to a range of F&B and entertainment options – but he admits it wasn’t easy. “The main challenge was that people used to think that race tracks are very restrictive and that they are only for professional race drivers. The purpose behind Yas Central was to attract people to what we
70
call an entertainment hub. Once all the aspects were up and running, it was a nice feeling of accomplishment. When we launched, an 80 year old lady came in to go for a few laps in a race car and she had a great time,” explains Al Sahlawi. That’s perhaps what stands out the most about Yas Marina Circuit – in the span of a few years, it has grown from being known as the home of the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to so much more. Aside from its popular driver experiences, visitors can also go drifting or steer a kart around the Grand Prix track. Add to that free weekly health and fitness activities on the track and annual sporting events, and it’s easy to see why Yas Marina Circuit has become a true community space in the capital.
At the heart of the hugely entertaining day is of course the sporting spectacle. As the racing season finale, the fixture promises to be electric. There is no doubt that it has been an intense Formula 1 season so far with old rivalries flaring and the tragic demise of Jules Bianchi from team Marussia. All eyes will be on the final showdown between Ferrari and Mercedes as two-time world champion Lewis Hamilton fights to retain his title from not only his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg, but also from four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel who has brought fire to Ferrari since joining the team this season. One thing is for certain, as history is made this race weekend, behind the scenes a dedicated team of unsung heroes proudly looks on – before the work begins again.

Mercedes marvel Lewis Hamilton looks set for another victory but many are also cheering on Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel who ended his remarkable tenure at Red Bull last season but has returned with impressive results this year, including three wins and eight podiums

THE CENTRE OFFERS HERITAGE TOURS AROUND THE AREA, ARABIC LESSONS AND CULTURAL MEALS DURING WHICH VISITORS CAN ENJOY AN AUTHENTIC EMIRATI BREAKFAST OR LUNCH
7 The Majlis Gallery 8 & 9 Arabian Tea House 10 Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood
A compelling contrast to the glitz and glam of ‘new’ Dubai, the serene surroundings of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood make for a journey of unique exploration. Formerly known as Bastakiya, visitors flock to this dynamic quarter that extends into the city from Dubai Creek. Dating back to the 1890s, traditional windtower architecture and winding pathways serve as hallmarks of a time gone by when pearling merchants mainly inhabited the area. Today, you can garner a glimpse into the city’s enchanting past with a visit to Al Fahidi Fort, the oldest building in Dubai, built in the 1780s. A trip to the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding is also a must. The centre offers heritage tours around the area, Arabic lessons and cultural meals during which visitors can enjoy an authentic Emirati breakfast or lunch. The atmospheric district also boasts a thriving arts and culture scene. One such established art space is Majlis Art Gallery. The gallery itself is a beautiful venue spread around a traditional Arabian-style courtyard where plants and flowers are the backdrop to an array of artworks on display. Visitors can experience an exhibition line-up that has, in the past, included handmade carpets from Afghanistan and bronze sculptures as well as expressive paintings and pieces from emerging Emirati artists. Another addition to Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood’s vibrant art scene is XVA Gallery. This cutting-edge exhibition space showcases innovative works from the Middle East and beyond, including a strong contingent of conceptual artists with fresh ideas. Stroll further along the meandering streets and discover the Arabian Tea House. Perfect for a relaxing pit stop, the charming café features a wide range of refreshing teas including its own homegrown brew. Or opt to sip on exotic blends and discover local culture while learning all about the art of making Arabic coffee at the city’s only dedicated coffee museum.

TIME AND TIDE ——— Just as generations did before them, Dubai Creek’s dhow builders are hard at work crafting traditional boats on the banks of the historic waterway
A steady hand and an incredible amount of patience are qualities most dhow builders share. The work is intricate and time-consuming, but also requires an appreciation for traditions of the past. Dhows have played a major role in Dubai’s story, as trading vessels and as boats which carried pearl divers out to sea. Still used in trade today, the boats are also an important symbol of the emirate’s heritage. Builders rarely
work from plans, instead drawing from a combination of skills and knowledge handed down the generations. Months of toil pay off once the dhow is ready to take to the waves, shaped by the hands of artisans who have hammered and honed every rivet and wooden plank into place. As the dhows set sail, the satisfied boat builders look on with a pride that is shared by the generations who have come before them.

WOR LD ON A PLATE ——— Having cooked his way around the globe, executive chef Olivier Chaleil brings a unique international flavour to Sofitel The Palm, Dubai
French chef Olivier Chaleil has worked in some of the world’s most prestigious kitchens. In a career that has seen him traverse the globe, Chaleil has cooked for Presidents, worked in Ottoman palaces and won two Michelin stars. His culinary journey has spanned France, the US, Canada, Taiwan, Indonesia, Bali, Madeira and Istanbul. Here in Dubai, Chaleil is at the helm of an impressive dining portfolio at Polynesian-themed resort, Sofitel The Palm, Dubai. As executive chef in charge of 14 different outlets, Chaleil’s international experience shines through in an impressive culinary offering. “We take food very seriously here. You will without doubt enjoy an authentic taste, no matter which restaurant you are dining in. Here in Dubai, you really have everything you could want. It’s hard as operators sometimes as there is so much choice. It’s important to think of new ways to do things. For me it’s simple, I put myself in the shoes of the guests,” says Chaleil. With the aim of tailoring the dining experience to exactly what Dubai guests are looking for, Chaleil has his sights firmly set on the city’s brunch scene, and is determined to offer something genuinely different. He says: “I believe that brunch is always the same thing, a buffet is a buffet. That is why I came up with two different concepts. The Moana Ocean Brunch is a long leisurely affair where the menu is filled with the most popular food from all over the world. You have ceviche, sashimi, French fruits de mer, as well as the best curries from all over the world, all different kinds of top quality dishes. “I’ve also just launched the Rare brunch at Porterhouse Steaks and Grills which sees the chefs create the dishes at big tables placed throughout the restaurant. The feeling is as though you are at home, you have friends coming and you are just gathered around the table relaxing. It’s very casual, you don’t feel like you are in a hotel – you feel like you are in a living room with your friends. “We are also reopening the Dim Sum brunch at Hong Loong as we have a very experienced dim sum chef in the kitchen, that’s very important. If you’ve ever been inside a Chinese kitchen, you’ll see the discipline and the skill.
78
When I used to visit Shanghai, I saw some of the most incredible restaurants, but I always looked for the small, unknown restaurants where you could eat all sorts of things, it was wonderful.” It’s exactly that passion for, and knowledge of, world cuisines that sets Chaleil apart. His career began in France after he was kicked out of one of the country’s most prestigious schools, setting him on the hospitality path. He recalls: “I didn’t know what to do, I was asked to leave one of France’s best schools because I was quite bad, I was boarding and just too young. One day my father said, okay it’s time to choose. My father found me an apprenticeship where I spent the time in kitchens and in school. I like this business because enjoying yourself, laughing and having fun are very close to what we do. We give pleasure to people and fun – the fun of sitting, eating, drinking and enjoying good conversation.” From there, Chaleil went on to work in kitchens all over the world, earning two Michelin stars with his team at a restaurant in France. Later on, during a stint in Istanbul, he would cook for international dignitaries. He says: “In Istanbul, I worked in a very old Ottoman palace hotel. We used to have presidents there all the time. I met everybody, every leader of the world, I met them and cooked for them, it was a fantastic experience.” Having now been in Dubai for three years, Chaleil is keen to continue making his mark on the local dining scene with a string of new ideas. He says: “We have started outside catering – it’s a combination of everything you see in Dubai, it is very much whatever you want. From a small apartment party to an event for 2,000 people, our chefs can come and cook and make anything you like. Basically you can have what is available in the hotel at your home, or a recipe of your choosing. It’s an interesting idea. “I’m always trying something new, for instance, I have new projects for each restaurant here but I won’t go into details as I don’t want to be copied. I always have to be doing something, it’s important for the restaurants, and I don’t want to stand still.” For reservations, contact: 04 4556677.

Perched on the edge of the city’s vibrant creek district, Vivaldi by Alfredo Russo delivers an interesting contrast between Dubai’s rich seafaring past and its present-day penchant for luxury. While the afternoon views provide a captivating look at Dubai Creek’s hustle and bustle, the evening proves just as mesmerising as the scene shifts to a brightly lit skyline reflected in the water below. Created by Michelin-starred chef Alfredo Russo, the eatery, at Sheraton Dubai Creek Hotel & Towers, entices with a menu of simple, classic Italian flavours that have been skillfully presented. Although there’s an excellent choice of robust pasta dishes and flavoursome pizzas to choose from, main courses such as the traditional Milanese veal escalope with potato purée and the tasty cod fillet baked in a brioche crumble with parsley crust, offer an interesting alternative. The dessert menu is equally as tempting, with both the Sicilian pastry rolls, oozing with ricotta, orange, pistachio and bitter chocolate ice cream, and Alfredo’s signature dessert of raspberry with crème brûlée too irresistible to pass up on.

As you’d expect from a restaurant located in the prestigious One&Only Royal Mirage, opulence and sophistication are paramount at Eauzone. Guests begin their elegant evening out by ambling across a short wooden pathway stretched over the hotel’s lagoon-like lake, before taking a seat at one of Eauzone’s intimately lit tables nestled beside the water’s edge. With a strong Asian influence throughout the menu, diners can expect to be tempted by exotic dishes such as Eauzone’s ginger lotus sea bass, the melt-in-your-mouth miso glazed black cod and perfectly pan-seared teriyaki chicken. RIVOLI
We love Al Zain for its wonderful blend of traditional and contemporary styles. The Bahraini jeweller’s main collections include Natural Pearls, Bridal, Bronze and High Jewellery, while there are also limited-edition pieces available. Natural Pearls is arguably the most striking of the collections, and each piece contains precious Bahraini pearls. The jeweller is steeped in tradition, and has its roots in the pearl trade of the 1930’s. The family-run business has gone from strength to strength since then with stores across the Middle East, and of course, in Dubai with a presence that includes a boutique at Mall of the Emirates.
This is the place to come for premium accessories, from watches and eyewear to leather goods and writing instruments. WATER WORLD myconcierge.com rounds up some of the best water sports across the UAE
—— DEFY GRAVITY
Feel like a superhero for the day soaring over the waves with a f lyboarding session. The concept comes from French jet-ski designer Franky Zapata, and has become a huge hit in recent years with high-profile advocates the world over including Dubai’s own Crown Prince, HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum regularly spotted trying it out. Powerful jets propel you above the waters as you take in views of Abu Dhabi’s gorgeous Ghantoot coast. Whether you’re new to the sport, or eager to get in more practice, we recommend booking a session with Sea Adventures. myconcierge has teamed up with them to offer an exclusive package that includes 30-minutes of f lyboarding and 30-minutes of jet skiing for AED500 per person. Visit: myco.ae/flyboard WAVE RIDER
Sitting at the base of Jebel Hafeet Mountain, in Al Ain, Wadi Adventure provides a unique contrast of water-related activities set against an arid desert backdrop. A true water worshiper’s paradise, we love the activities here which range from surfing in the wave-controlled pool and waterskiing at speeds of up to 45km per hour, to braving the rapids along the world’s longest manmade white-water channels. It’s the perfect place for the whole family to indulge in a bit of outdoor adventure and Wadi Adventure’s Ultimate Package for AED320 per person is just the ticket for thrill-seekers looking for an action packed day out. Undoubtedly one of the best ways to garner a better appreciation for the region’s culture is with an expertly guided tour – which is why we consider a visit to Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) an absolute must. As you meander through the quaint streets and winding pathways of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, one of the centre’s knowledgeable guides will offer insight into this fascinating district. The 90-minute tour also includes a Q&A session back at SMCCU, authentic Arabic refreshments and a trip to Diwan Mosque. Book now for just AED65 per person. Visit: myco.ae/smccu
CRUISE THE CREEK
It was along the buzzing banks of Dubai Creek that the city’s enchanting story began. Reminiscent of the region’s rich seafaring past, today, traditional wooden boats, or dhows as they are known, continue to command the waterways as they ply their trade. While a bustle of daytime trade is an experience not to be missed, we also recommend taking in the area’s glorious evening views. Tour Dubai offers a buffet dinner cruise that completes a round trip along the creek’s brightly lit banks and illuminated architecture. Enjoy the sights and fantastic fare for AED250 per person. Visit: myco.ae/dhowcruise
One of the best ways to truly appreciate the contrasts of this dynamic city is from the air, which is we love nothing more than taking to the skies with Helidubai. Hop into one of their luxurious helicopters and take in the sights of Dubai in style and comfort. For a glimpse at the emirate’s rich past, we suggest the Heritage Tour. Taking off from the waterfront of Dubai Festival City, you’ll hover above the city’s oldest and most charming districts, including Dubai Creek and Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Witness the hustle and bustle of this captivating waterside locale before whizzing past some of Dubai’s most recognisable skyscrapers, lush green golf courses and the gently lapping waters of the Arabian Gulf. Available for myconcierge members, this memorable tour is priced at AED595 per person, on a sharing basis. Visit: myco.ae/helitour

DUBAI CREEK
THE WORLD UNDER CONSTRUCTION
DUBAI CREEK, SOUKS AND DUBAI MUSEUM The heart of the city, the Creek is a stunning spot to catch a glimpse of authentic Dubai. See dhows (traditional boats) ply their trade along the waters while early morning visitors will see fishermen at work on the river banks. Also in this part of the city is Dubai Museum, which makes for a fascinating day out with interactive displays and exhibits charting the emirate’s history from its pearl diving days. Stop by the gold, spice and perfume souks for some traditional treasures before leaving this vibrant area.

ASK THE CONCIERGE
Karlo Mendoza, assistant concierge manager at Grand Hyatt Dubai gives his recommendations for the city’s best spots for spectacular views
1
For the best Dubai vistas, there is nowhere better than At the Top, the viewing platform in Burj Khalifa. As you would expect from the world’s tallest building, the panoramas are outstanding. While there, I would also suggest a visit to Burj Khalifa SKY, which is a new observation deck located even higher on Level 148. As well as the amazing views, there is an outdoor terrace, lounge and retail boutique taking the whole experience to another level. Back on the ground, the surrounding area of Downtown Dubai offers much to see with marvellous skyscrapers and the world’s largest shopping space, The Dubai Mall. Elsewhere, Jumeirah Beach Residences affords sweeping views of the Arabian Gulf and looks back towards the futuristic towers of Dubai Marina. The area also offers some of the city’s best restaurants, a public beach, and The Beach for a spot of shopping. For something a bit different, the views at Dubai Creek presents a wonderful insight into the emirate’s rich past. It’s also home to museums, galleries and restaurants, while an

abra cruise along the creek’s waters offers a fascinating view of the traditional wind tower architecture which is typical of this part of town. Grand Hyatt Dubai is ideally located for visits to the creek area. There are plenty of novel ways to take in the sights during a visit to Dubai and I recommend a view from the air. Skydive Dubai is a wonderful way to see Palm Jumeirah from above as you freefall through the air. It’s an unforgettable experience you’ll want to do again and again. A seaplane flight with Seawings is another great way to take it all in. They offer flights across the city, meaning you can experience both its modern and historic sides. Of course, another great way to enjoy the views is by booking a table for a delicious dinner at one of the city’s gourmet restaurants. Traiteur at Park Hyatt Dubai is a French fine-dining venue with exceptional food and beautiful Dubai Creek views. I would also recommend a visit to one of the city’s most romantic restaurants, 101 Dining Lounge and Bar at One&Only The Palm, Dubai. The views out across the Gulf are simply stunning and are the perfect accompaniment to the delicious Mediterranean cuisine. You can also combine sight seeing with an evening out at one of Dubai’s many rooftop bars. Mercury Lounge at Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach is one of the city’s coolest new venues, boasting skyline and Arabian Gulf views. Above at Sofitel Dubai Downtown is a relaxed rooftop bar with fantastic views of Burj Khalifa. Or, for all-round panoramas and the perfect end to a busy day sightseeing, Uptown Bar at Jumeirah Beach Hotel is an excellent choice. It’s a great place to look back towards the bustling city and reflect on a day well spent.
