MECHANICAL MASTERY ——— Franck Muller talks about record-breaking tourbillons and the future of watchmaking
A brand that’s famed as being the ‘master of complications’ needs little introduction and while every record-breaking Franck Muller timepiece speaks volumes on its own, they also individually tell the tale of the illustrious man behind the name. Watchmaker and founder Franck Muller was always interested in mechanical devices and, after graduating from the Geneva School of Watch Making, he quickly gained a reputation for technical excellence, restoring old timepieces for collectors and auction houses. Devoting time to craft unique watches that would offer the same level of technical achievement presented in pocket watches, the first Franck Muller wristwatches were presented in 1983 and immediately won over critics for its complicated movements that were created entirely by Muller himself. “Franck Muller has always been the Master of Complications. Since the start, it has always claimed its independence in production, strength in creativity and design, and passion for haute horlogerie complications,” says the enigmatic founder. “I love all Franck Muller watches and my mood dictates which collection to wear. But if I had to mention one of my favourites, it would be the Giga Tourbillon – the watch that features the biggest tourbillon in the world.” The Giga Tourbillon is just one of the timepieces that has cemented the brand’s reputation. After all, Franck Muller has succeeded in unveiling a world premiere and never-seen-before creation every single year. “Franck Muller watches are the reflection of my personality and every single model is directly inspired by my everyday living.
26
Each timepiece has its own story. For instance, the Crazy Hours collection came about based on my time at a magnificent resort in Mauritius. There, everything was punctuated by rules – which I really don’t like – so I wanted to create a watch that has none. The Crazy Hours was born. “For the Revolution collection, I got the name from the famous song by The Beatles. In 1968, The Beatles released the White album featuring the track Revolution. This song ignited an era of social change and chronicled a radical shift in the mindset of a new generation. I found it to be a suitable name for my collection because both the song and Franck Muller brand really had the same goal. It was during that time when I aimed to reconnect the values of traditional Swiss watchmaking to a totally transformed contemporary horology. The Franck Muller Revolution timepiece changed the world of watchmaking,” says Muller. Together with co-founder and CEO of the Franck Muller Group Vartan Sirmakes, the brand continues to grow from strength to strength with boutiques welcoming enthusiasts around the world, including the United Arab Emirates. “Customer satisfaction plays an important role within our business. My daily role is to assess all their needs and demands. The goal is not only to make them happy but to keep them coming back. Despite my busy schedule, I still try to reach out to customers on a regular basis by travelling and visiting Franck Muller boutiques worldwide,” explains Muller.

Here in the Middle East, demand for the Curvex and Master Square from the ladies’ collections are “very high” at the moment. The Master Square collection is inspired by Franck Muller’s taste for the Art Deco movement and the geometrical purity and symmetry of the lines give the collection a balanced design. Cintree Curvex, on the other hand, is the iconic shape of Franck Muller and the brand’s most distinctive silhouette. There’s much more in store for 2017, especially since it marks the brand’s 25th anniversary, as Muller explains. “Next year will indeed be a big year for us. We are working on several new models to be launched in 2017. These new collections will be released during our exhibition, the World Presentation of Haute Horlogerie that will be held in January 2017. We are also planning to host events in the Middle East to further make our presence felt and give a taste of Franck Muller luxury to watch aficionados in the region.” Collectors demand nothing but the best and leading maisons such as Franck Muller have to always be at the forefront of innovation, writing new chapters to the textbook of watchmaking. Muller remains unfazed by the challenge. “To make watches, you need three things. First, it is very important to create the most complicated movements. Second, you must master the body of the watch – the case. Lastly, and the most essential,
is to have an in-house mastery over dials because the dial is the first thing that people see. It is fundamental to have all the watchmaking processes in your own hands. This is the only way you can make a fully integrated product. “Watch enthusiasts will always seek the fulfillment that only mechanical watches can give. I may not be able to know what the future will bring but Franck Muller will continue to be the market leader in terms of technical innovation. We’ve had huge success with Thunderbolt, the world’s fastest tourbillon; Giga Tourbillon, the world’s largest tourbillon; Lady Tourbillon, the world’s smallest tourbillon and Aeternitas Mega 4, the world’s most complicated watch with no less than 36 complications, 1,483 components, 99 rubies and 91 movements. These collections started Franck Muller’s victory and we will continue to bring more world premieres in the future.” —— Discover the latest timepieces at the Franck Muller boutique in The Dubai Mall. —— The Italian designer takes pride in delivering a sense of timeless elegance across his many collections and labels, and it’s this philosophy that carries over into Giorgio Armani’s bespoke garments. The personalised service, available at the brand’s boutique at Mall of the Emirates, allows you to delve into a world of tailor-made options that includes lapel shapes, linings and a selection of fabrics. You can then also complete the look with a made-to-measure shirt. Perfection is paramount and for Giorgio Armani’s bespoke service every suit is handmade in Italy. The brand will fly a tailor over to Dubai to take measurements and provide expert advice to customers on specific designs and styles. These client specifications are then taken the back to the Italian factory, where the suit is crafted from scratch. From the time of the initial appointment and measuring through to delivery, your suit will take up to six weeks to complete. Due to this unique approach, appointments are limited and only available in the UAE a few times per year. You will need to contact the store to find out when the next exclusive service takes place.

The Paris-based purveyor of luxury items is also one of the oldest designers in the world having begun the manufacture of French high fashion in 1837. Hermès produces some of the most globally sought after goods in leather, apparel, home furnishings and jewellery. Akin to its exclusive nature there are only a few select boutiques in the world that cater to bespoke services, and The Dubai Mall boutique is the only location in the Middle East. Hermès takes pride and pleasure in meeting the challenges of each customer’s demands and provides a high-quality design that will last a lifetime. The service encompasses formal wear, knitwear, ties, leather items and casual separates, along with made-to-measure suits which is among its most popular. Each suit is made up of 144 different pattern pieces and with 5,000 fabrics to choose from and 30 required measurements – not to mention upwards of 80 hours of tailoring to be undertaken at an Hermès workshop in Paris – having a bespoke suit made is a lengthy process, but one that’s well worth the wait. Hermès will even craft a suit without the lining, which is perfect for warmer climates. Complete your look with a custom-made shirt, crafted with your preferred fabric and cuff, collar and button details. The beauty of this service is the manner in which the house of Hermès extends the same meticulous attention to detail to a crocodile skin coat in a unique cut, as it does to a luxurious cashmere jumper.

DUNHILL
—— Luxury men’s retailer Dunhill is committed to providing exceptional craftsmanship for discerning clientele. Dunhill’s Made to Measure service – available at Emirates Towers Boulevard – is designed to meet each individual’s unique specifications. Around 300 of the finest British and Italian fabrics are offered to craft a two or three-piece suit, jacket, trouser, shirt or overcoat. A choice of two signature Dunhill cuts may be chosen for each garment – the St James block, which is a nod to the typical Saville Row shape, or the chic Belgravia fit - a slimmer silhouette with narrower shoulders, a suppressed waist and built up chest. You can plunge deeper into more meticulous details to really put your own signature style on the ensemble. The most luxurious of all these are the Super 170s and Super 200s fabrics that are the most finely spun yarn possible. They really help to define patterns in Charcoal Bird’s Eye and Herringbone colours. But it’s in the suit jacket stakes where Dunhill really comes into its own. Jackets come with a notch or peak lapel, double or single vents and straight or slanted pockets and each variation includes a ‘roped’ shoulder – raising the crown of the sleeve slightly for a clean line and classically English silhouette – as well as a floating canvas within the jacket front allowing it to mold to the body over time. The possibilities are seemingly endless, so you can be sure that Dunhill has the customisations to deliver your perfect suit. 7

winning Formula ——— With plenty of sporting action and incredible live entertainment, Concierge showcases the many highlights in store at the 2016 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Words by Catherine Langley
43
As one of the biggest sporting events on the calendar – and the popular motorsport’s season finale – the 2016 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix looks set to amaze with another spectacular edition taking place from November 25 to 27. Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island is the final destination of the 2016 World Grand Prix, which runs annually from March until November. The drivers and cars will arrive in the emirate after a staggering 20 countries have played host to the event in preceding months. This year is the eighth time Abu Dhabi has welcomed the season’s grand finale – and to date, over 2.5 million visitors have poured into the capital to attend the weekend’s festivities. Entertainment industry heavyweights, including Rihanna, The Chemical Brothers and the legend of stage and soul, Lionel Richie, will be revving up audiences for Formula 1 finale weekend concerts from Thursday to Sunday. The event is also the penultimate climax of Yasalam – the largest entertainment festival in the region.
“THE PREPAR ATIONS, PL ANNING AND ORGANISATION OF THE ABU DHABI GR AND PRIX IS A 12-MONTH ‘ALWAYS-ON’ PROCESS FOR US. WHEN WE FINISH THE ACTUAL R ACE WEEKEND, WE’RE STR AIGHT INTO A DELIVERY PROGR AMME FOR THE UP-AND-COMING YEAR”
Since its addition to the F1 calendar in 2009, the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit as been a real crowd favourite, making its mark as the only twilight race on the F1 calendar and, more recently, as the sport’s season finale.
Mega-musicians aside, the sheer logistics of managing the Abu Dhabi leg of the world Grand Prix is quite simply awe-inspiring and takes the team at Yas Marina Circuit, hosts of the season’s last race of the 2016 F1 Championship, a full year to plan and prepare for. “The preparations, planning and organisation of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is a 12-month ‘alwayson’ process for us. When we finish the actual race weekend, we’re straight into a delivery programme for the up-and-coming year,” explains Nick McElwee, sales and marketing director of Yas Marina Circuit, who describes the event as ‘electric’. “There’s a huge buzz across the race weekend and whether you’re in one of the corporate boxes or in the grandstand with family and friends, the sense of occasion is very apparent. And an upside of all the rigour in planning is that all of us working at the event can actually enjoy the weekend, watching the hard work come to life.”

Motoring buffs will be well versed in the mechanisms of the F1 World Grand Prix, but for many visitors, the finale, taking place in the last week of November, will be as much about the festivities and fun as it is about the winners. By the time the world’s best racing drivers arrive in the UAE, they will literally have driven all over the world’s best race tracks. Their itinerary will have included Australia, Mexico, Japan, Italy, Belgium, Monaco, China, Russia and Bahrain, to name a few. The two favourites this year are seasoned veterans Nico Rosberg of Germany and English superstar Lewis Hamilton, yet McElwee believes the element of surprise could well rear its head in this year’s Grand Prix final. “So far it’s looking good for an Abu Dhabi showdown in 2016. I won’t name names but as a promoter I like to see personality on the track, drivers who make the racing interesting. For example, there’s a young kid this year who’s bringing the sport alive as he forces his own style and makes the ‘older-guard’ uncomfortable.”

Yas Island is the perfect destination for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix because it’s already been playing host to the famous Yasalam Festival – a 122-day long event that takes place in the lead up to the Formula 1 final. Yasalam – which means ‘wow’ in Arabic – is an annual event that began in 2009. For more information on the festival, visit: yasalam.ae With its state-of-the art facilities ranging from theme parks to hotels, shopping malls, concert stadiums and a marina, Yas Island is the ultimate haven for celebrities, racing enthusiasts and families seeking a weekend of fun. As the climax of four months of festivities, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has also become a huge draw for UAE residents and international visitors alike. McElwee comments, “Yas Island is expecting over 30 million visitors by 2018 and of course this is down to the superb array of entertainment and hospitality options – of which the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is an integral part.”
If you’re seeking a celebrity-filled, glamour-soaked evening of luxury then the host of the official F1 after party, Amber Lounge, is the name to remember. Set on board the Amber Lounge Celebrity Yacht, you will be at the centre of the action on race weekend. Amber Lounge is the official destination all F1 drivers and visiting celebrities make a beeline for during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Pass holders can view all the qualifying races from a breathtaking spot aboard the yacht on November 26, while enjoying international DJ sets and celebrity performances. The showstopper however is the following evening on November 27. That’s where guests can watch the final race in style and party the night away with the F1 drivers and VIPs. Gift bags, official team merchandise and luxury transfer services from any point within the marina to Amber Lounge are all part of the experience. A two-day package costs just over AED18,000 per person. For more information, visit: amber-lounge.com

TALKING TIME ——— Dubai Watch Week returns to showcase exceptional craftsmanship and exciting industry innovations

1 HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum visits Dubai Watch Week 2015 at Dubai International Financial Centre
Laying bare the intricacies of watchmaking and the art behind horological movements, Dubai Watch Week (DWW) is bringing together the world’s foremost brands, independent watchmakers and global enthusiasts for a week of insightful debate, discussions and exclusive presentations. Prominent watch fairs such as Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) and Baselworld in Switzerland have long been recognised as benchmark events in the world of watchmaking but there’s increasing attention on the role of the Middle East thanks to a burgeoning retail presence and wide network of regional collectors. Since its remarkable debut last year, Dubai Watch Week, which takes place from November 15 to 19 this year, has grown in stature and is set to attract the best from both the east and west. “We are so proud of the success of the first edition of Dubai Watch Week and since the launch we have been overwhelmed with positive feedback from industry patrons, experts, collectors and brands. Dubai Watch Week has created a global event where experts, brands and the media can network and exchange ideas through various platforms and we hope that these ideas will help to shape future conversations surrounding not only regional horology interests but also what’s happening within the watch industry on a global scale,” explains Melika Yazdjerdi, director of Dubai Watch Week and head of corporate communications at Seddiqi Holding, the family-owned group behind the high-profile event. Last year, DWW broke convention by hosting a rare exhibition on The Rebels of Horology, championing legendary independent watchmakers including MB&F, Bovet, De Bethune, Hautlence, Laurent Ferrier, H. Moser & Cie and Greubel Forsey among others but there are many more surprises in store this year too, says Yazdjerdi.
“DUBAI WATCH WEEK HAS CREATED A GLOBAL EVENT WHERE EXPERTS, BR ANDS AND THE MEDIA CAN NET WORK AND EXCHANGE IDEAS THROUGH VARIOUS PL ATFOR MS”
4
“For our first edition, we wanted to focus on the rebels of the industry – the independent brands. Historically most of the big brands we know today started as the vision of an individual, and throughout the centuries and decades, they have been established as global brands. We wanted to highlight the importance of the independent brands and their contribution to the watch industry. This year, our focus is on horological movements where we showcase the different categories of movements through timepieces that include both global and independent brands.” Held under the Patronage of HH Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice Chairman of Dubai Culture & Arts Authority and in association with the Fondation de Haute Horlogerie (FHH), Dubai Watch Week will follow the theme ‘Masters of Time’ and will take place in two locations this year: Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and The Dubai Mall.

As part of DWW’s comprehensive programme this year, visitors can explore unique exhibitions and take part in workshops, forums and watchmaking masterclasses. This edition also saw Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons unveil a new initiative entitled Time for Art where two special artwork created by Emirati artist Abdul Qader Al-Rais was auctioned during Christie’s Dubai’s Modern and Contemporary art sale on the October 18 with proceeds donated to the Noor Dubai charity foundation. “We have so many amazing programmes lined up. For example, some of the pieces in the Mastery of Time exhibition date back to the early 1100s and it is the first time that an exhibition of this kind is being curated in the Middle East. We also have world-renowned speakers coming to the Horology Forum and this is an opportunity for visitors to get close to some of the industry’s most celebrated icons. I would also recommend the Horological Movements exhibition at DIFC, where visitors can see exceptional timepieces defined through their movements and where you can personally meet the amazing master craftsmen behind these watches,” explains Yazdjerdi. “The region and the UAE’s dynamic markets are not only finding a deeper rooted interest in timepieces, there is also a growing population of connoisseurs and amateurs interested in learning more about the incredible art of watchmaking,” adds Hind Abdul Hamied Seddiqi, chief marketing officer of Seddiqi Holding. “This event will allow visitors to become more knowledgeable about the craftsmanship, while offering them the opportunity to admire the most innovative and prestigious pieces from up close.”

“A TIMEPIECE IS NOT ONLY AN EXPRESSION OF ART AND BEAUT Y BUT A REFLECTION OF THE M ASTER CR AFTSM AN’S VISION. WHEN YOU ACQUIRE ONE, YOU ARE PRESERVING A PIECE OF SOMEONE’S HISTORY”
Dubai Watch Week also sets itself apart thanks to its partnership with Fondation de Haute Horlogerie and remains committed to raising awareness for the watch industry through educational platforms with a series of scholarship, training and mentorship programmes available to the public. “Such initiatives will support the industry that is faced with many challenges in preserving the craftsmanship and the art of master watchmaking. This year, we are so excited to introduce the first ever HH Certification programme and we are giving 12 lucky attendees the opportunity to be certified in basic watchmaking and knowledge by Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie Academy trainers,” says Yazdjerdi. Education and mentorship remains vital in watchmaking today as the skills and techniques first practiced centuries ago are passed on from generation to generation. As Yazdjerdi explains, it’s one of the main reasons why watches remain so precious even today. “The horological sector is the only industry that has been established since the beginning of time. As brands evolve and new generations come together, a legacy is created that resonates throughout history with each generation. “A timepiece is not only an expression of art and beauty but a reflection of the master craftsman’s vision. When you acquire one, you are preserving a piece of someone’s history. That’s what makes owning a watch timeless.” —— For more information, visit: dubaiwatchweek.com

Neighbouring emirate, and capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi presents an equally exciting destination that begs exploration. Despite growing from a sleepy coastal village to a booming metropolis, the city is still firmly focused on its cultural offerings. As new developments continue to spring up across the capital, transforming it into a global hub for arts, business and leisure, to truly appreciate the remarkable progress of a city, visitors need to fully understand its history. At Heritage Village by the Corniche Breakwater, visitors are given the chance to explore this not-so-distant past and marvel at the extent to which Abu Dhabi has changed since oil revenues transformed the emirate’s fortunes around the 1970s. Here, the life of the Bedu people is proudly showcased while pastimes such as glass-blowing, weaving and pottery are demonstrated by local artisans. Just across the water, Abu Dhabi Corniche stretches along the coast with its backdrop of gleaming towers that gesture towards a city living very much in the future. Of course, no visit to Abu Dhabi would be complete without a trip to the magnificent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Situated between three main bridges – Maqta, Mussafah and Sheikh Zayed – it adds an enchanting touch to the capital’s skyline. An astounding 82 domes form the roofs and ceilings of the structure, each clad with marble on the outside and decorated with works of art and verses from the Holy Qur’an on the inside. Slightly further afield, there are many architectural sights and ancient forts to explore, including Qasr Al Muwaji. This historic building has watched over
the emirate’s heritage heartland of Al Ain for nearly a century. It now houses an exhibition in a modern glass-walled space that tells the story of UAE president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the Al Nahyan dynasty. The emirate boasts a varied topography with a stunning coast and sea, natural islands, glorious sand dunes and abundant mangrove forests. The mangroves, commonly seen around the capital’s islands and sheltered coastal areas, go on for miles and miles and provide essential shelter to local marine life. Fishing was one of the oldest means of survival for Abu Dhabi inhabitants who have relied on the ocean’s bounty for centuries. The practice lives on here today – visitors can take a trip to the dhow port by Mina Zayed early in the morning and watch as these traditional boats prepare to head out to sea. The Abu Dhabi Pearl Journey on-board an authentic jalboot vessel is another great way to experience the city’s treasured past. For those eager to explore the emirate’s more modern additions and luxury leisure options, head to Yas Island. Here motorsports enthusiasts can enjoy the revelry of this month’s Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit with festivities continuing right along Yas Marina. Alternatively, tee off on one of the region’s most outstanding golf courses, the picturesque 18-hole links-style club at Yas Links Abu Dhabi. This prestigious district is also home to a bevy of family-fun activities including Yas Waterworld and the famed indoor theme park, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi.

FRENCH FLAIR ——— Michelin chef Yannick Alléno on inspiration, innovation and the international appeal of Dubai
Taking pride of place on the iconic Palm Jumeirah, One&Only The Palm is a five-star beachfront retreat with spectacular views of the Arabian Gulf. Equally as impressive as the setting are the hotel’s gourmet restaurants and bars, including STAY by Yannick Alléno that is celebrated around the world for its association with the creative three-star Michelin chef. “STAY is our modern vision of a fine-dining restaurant; one that offers a true French and modern culinary treat based on great food, creativity and generosity. Our focus is, as always, the taste and our challenge is to deliver affordable, refined and sharp cuisine through a wide selection of iconic or modern French dishes in order to please a demanding international clientele in a stylish, comfortable environment. “Because pastry was my very first passion, our very unique signature is the ‘pastry libraries’ that open onto all our STAY restaurants, including One&Only The Palm in Dubai. Designed as shop windows, every Pastry Library showcases the pastry chef’s creations to take the dessert experience to a higher level. It is our modern answer to the contemporary trends of open kitchens,” explains Alléno. For the award-winning chef, who started working in the kitchen from the age of 15, being awarded three Michelin stars remains one of his career highlights because it paved the way for so much more. “I have had three major steps in my career: being awarded the three Michelin stars in 2007 was the beginning of a new status, meeting my business partner Florence Cane the following year was the foundation of our group and the starting point of that exciting adventure, and taking over Pavillon Ledoyen two years ago was the first time it felt like home,” says Alléno, who holds French cuisine in the highest regard. “What I love most about French gastronomy is its complexity. For centuries, the French have experimented and made note of their progress. Chefs such as François Pierre La Varenne, Marie-Antoine Carême, Auguste Escoffier have huge heritage. I have travelled a lot these last years, discovering new cultures and new tastes but each time I felt the truth is still in France. French gastronomy is a sum of codifications, analysis, ways to pair things and it is
64
definitely the richest. In addition to that, I am sure there is still so much to unveil if we give it a fresher look. So far, we have worked on two of its major pillars that have been developed in the book collection Reflections of a chef: Sauces (through extractions) and Terroirs (through fermentation) but I plan to dedicate the next 25 years exploring those new fields of expression.” Aside from traditional French fare and signature classics, guests at STAY by Yannick Alléno also have the option of trying the chef’s innovative ‘Food&Extractions’ pairing menu where tailor-made vegetable and fruit beverages are expertly crafted to complement the flavours of each dish. “The starting point of that menu is obviously the work we achieved in 2013 on our modern sauces and the creation of the revolutionary technique of Extraction that reveals the true taste of a product. Then true to our modern cuisine philosophy, we always try to identify ways to improve our offers by understanding our contemporaries’ needs and desires. In STAY by Yannick Alléno at One&Only The Palm, we had to adapt to the fact that part of the population do not often order wine pairing, so the idea of pairing a juice, an Extraction, instead of an alcoholic beverage to a dish started there. And we are very happy as it is a hit,” reveals Alléno, who enjoys the art of experimentation. “I am curious and love to create new dishes. Playing with ingredients is fun; to try new things, incorporate new flavours, taste, transform, shape the product and come up with new recipes is what livens me up,” he adds. Yannick Alléno was recently in Dubai to host a grand one-off degustation for discerning clientele at One&Only The Palm and believes the city’s holds a lot of potential on the global culinary stage. “There are many international chefs in Dubai and they all bring their own touch and art of living to the gastronomic scene. This marvellous, surprising city is really a crossroad between Europe, Asia and the Middle East and therefore one of the best places for chefs to create and be inspired. There are lots of different top restaurants and concepts by celebrity chefs and the city, apart from being a great inspiration, offers us freedom to create.” —— For more information and to book a table at STAY by Yannick Alléno at One&Only The Palm, contact: 04 4401030

ASK THE CONCIERGE
Felix Trueb, chief concierge at Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort, reveals the city’s top visitor highlights
1
Dubai is a city that perfectly combines its historic flair with world-class attractions for travellers seeking a sense of adventure. From its charming old town setting and bustling markets around Dubai Creek to the modern and elegant The Walk at Jumeirah Beach Residence retail and dining boulevard, this city offers something for all tastes. The topic of where Dubai is headed often comes up amongst visitors and I believe the innovations this city has built till date, as well as the ones planned for the future, will certainly keep surprising us for years to come. The area known as new Dubai, which stretches from Burj Khalifa in Downtown until Dubai Marina, is a splendid example of a modern architectural vision and the area features several dining options and shopping attractions, which caters to many different preferences. From the homegrown boutiques at The Beach to the various brands on offer at The Dubai Mall, the options for retail therapy here are endless. For handmade and unique gifts such as colourful carpets and Arabian lamps, the souks around the historic Dubai Creek won’t

disappoint. In fact, spend an afternoon exploring this area as the lively streets and winding alleys are sure to entice and make for excellent photographs. Dubai is always good for surprises and, as a concierge, you have to constantly keep up with the latest developments. At the moment, we are very proud of the opening of Dubai Opera at Downtown Dubai. It has become an iconic landmark representing the highest standards of cultural entertainment. For more actionoriented visitors, the recently-opened IMG Worlds of Adventure entertainment park offers excellent rides and thrills for the whole family. If visitors plan to be in Dubai for only a short weekend, I’d recommend they start their adventure with a yacht cruise along the shorelines of the city. Enjoying the marvelous skyline at night is a must for a romantic evening with your loved one. If you have the time beforehand, watch the sunset from the tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa. I always suggest guests also book a private desert safari experience where they can enjoy a true taste of tradition amidst a magical desert setting. After a day out in the sunshine, one of the favourite places to relax is right here at The Beach House, Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort. You can enjoy delicious signature drinks while lounging on comfortable sofas by the beach. It’s also one of the best places to try the cultural pastime of smoking shisha. For dinner at the hotel, the Bushman’s Restaurant & Bar is the perfect place for fine dining in a relaxed atmosphere. This authentic Australian steakhouse offers a wide range of tender cuts as well as more exotic options such as kangaroo or emu. Enjoy your romantic dinner or have a great family night out in one of the restaurant’s private dining areas.
