The UAE celebrates its 43rd National Day on December 2 and Abu Dhabi will host a range of activities to reflect on the immense progress of our nation and spur our optimism for the future. Many of these events will reflect our culture and heritage and I hope you have the chance to join in and experience it for yourselves. This month the recently re-introduced Abu Dhabi Classics – a highly popular international concert series that will run until May across venues in the capital and our oasis city of Al Ain – welcomes the UAE debut of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra for performances on December 15 and 16. Another calendar highlight is the arrival, around December 12, of the toughest endurance sailing fleet on the planet – the stunning yachts and hardy crews of the Volvo Ocean Race. We are hosting a race stopover until January 3 when the entire capital will come alive with a celebration of all things nautical, including our very own rich maritime past. Activities will centre around our purpose-built Destination Village on Abu Dhabi Corniche – it’s free to enter so please come along. There will be concerts, competitions and opportunities to get out onto our clear, warm water and meet our very own race competitor – Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing – including celebrity Emirati sailor Adil Khalid. This team, in its striking yacht Azzam, which is Arabic for determination, is carrying our hopes around the world in this nine-month epic competition. Certainly December promises something for everyone and it is fitting that we draw what has been a progressive year for us to a close in celebratory fashion. Let me take this opportunity to wish you all a very healthy, productive and progressive New Year. Abu Dhabi has a host of major events planned for 2015 and I hope you will return to experience them.

December is an important month in the UAE calendar as it’s when National Day celebrations are held across the country to mark the formation of the emirates in 1971. In the time since, the region has undergone an incredible transformation and the UAE is now an exciting visitor destination that boasts a host of modern marvels and attractions. Yet the traditions of the past, such as the ancient art of Arabic calligraphy, have not been forgotten and are very much still a part of everyday life

Fishing is one of the oldest means of survival for Abu Dhabi inhabitants who have relied on riches from the Arabian Gulf for centuries. For visitors to the capital, a trip to the fish market early in the morning is a great way to tap into local culture, not to mention an opportunity to purchase some fresh fish, which can then be cooked al fresco on one of the open grills in the city’s parks.

With so many attractions, sporting events and entertainment shows taking place in the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi is an international hot spot for visitors. Within a short space of time the emirate has positioned itself as a modern, world-class city that’s always looking to the future, but with its soul firmly rooted in its culture and heritage. To get a sense of the country’s past, head to Heritage Village by the Corniche. A trip to the Al Wathba Camel Race Track is also great for a cultural experience as visitors can watch camel races starting from 6:30am on Fridays and Saturdays. The most amazing view of Abu Dhabi is from Observation Deck at 300 at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers. The venue is Abu Dhabi’s tallest public space with 360-degree panoramic views and the best way to appreciate the setting is with the Tea at the Towers afternoon tea service. The most exciting place to shop is at the premier luxury shopping destination, Avenue at Etihad Towers. Located on Podium Levels 1 and 2 of Etihad Towers, it features a host of luxury brand stores including Hermès, Cartier, Montblanc, Bulgari and Rolex. For a more adventurous experience, a drive around Yas Marina Circuit won’t fail to impress. Yachting excursions and private seaplane tours operated by Seawings are also popular. For a memorable evening, a sunset dinner at Scott’s Restaurant at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers is a top choice. With legendary seafood dishes and striking architecture, the restaurant features a terrace that affords great views of the Arabian Gulf while providing a romantic setting for fine dining. Afterwards, head over to Ray’s Bar, which is known for its superb cocktails and also has great views. The city has developed its modern infrastructure without losing its cultural identity. Indeed, Abu Dhabi exudes a quiet confidence while warmly welcoming the world.

Why not add a touch of sparkle to festive season celebrations with some diamond jewellery? Chopard has unveiled two new high jewellery creations that have been specially crafted for Christmas, including an 18-carat white gold necklace that features pear-cut diamonds flowing into a decorative curl design. The play on shapes is also reflected in the accompanying bracelet that forms an arabesque pattern made up of pear- and brilliant-cut diamonds. Where: Marina Mall. Contact: 02 6812233

Taking the lead To celebrate UAE National Day, Concierge charts the most influential leaders who have played a key role in transforming the desert emirates into a modern metropolis WORDS BY

GEMMA GREENWOOD

Life in the UAE today bears little resemblance to that of the pre-20th century. Where the modern cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai now stand, envied for their world-class infrastructure and iconic architecture, was little more than vast desert dunes inhabited by proud and resourceful nomadic Bedouin tribes occupying fishing villages and date farms. Abu Dhabi was dotted with hundreds of palm-frond huts, a few coral buildings and the ruler’s fort, while Dubai, situated along the creek, was a trading hub. At the time, Sharjah was the most powerful and populated state, but all this changed with the discovery of oil in 1953. The rulers of both Dubai and Abu Dhabi saw the potential that oil wealth represented in the future transformation of their respective states and the rest, they say, is history. When Abu Dhabi’s late ruler, HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, led the formation of the UAE as its President on December 2, 1971, what followed was the unprecedented rapid development of a desert nation, led by Emirati rulers and key family members whose foresight and vision continue to astound the world.

Respected as the father of the nation, HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan served as UAE President from the day he formed the federation on December 2, 1971 and as Ruler of Abu Dhabi from 1966 until he passed away in 2004. He was instrumental in developing the UAE into the modern nation it is today. His story really begins in 1968 when the British announced their intention to withdraw from the Arabian Gulf. Sheikh Zayed, along with the late Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, called for a federation of the seven emirates that made up the Trucial States. His enthusiasm, drive and special qualities won the support of his fellow rulers who elected him as the first UAE President.

Sheikh Rashid was responsible for major infrastructure developments such as Al Maktoum Hospital – the first hospital in the Trucial States – Al Maktoum Bridge in Deira and Dubai International Airport, recognising the emirate’s potential as a global aviation hub. Sheikh Rashid’s urban vision is clearly visible in the town planning of Dubai today.

Sheikh Rashid was responsible for major infrastructure developments such as Al Maktoum Hospital, Al Maktoum Bridge and Dubai International Airport

As President, Sheikh Zayed became known for his conservation efforts and benevolence to charities but his true legacy is his vision for the UAE, which has been realised by today’s rulers.

HH Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum was the eighth ruler of Dubai from 1958 to 1990 and possessed a clear vision of what was required to transform Dubai into a modern city – a feat many believed was impossible. He was known for his hands-on approach and, twice daily, would tour Dubai to see how projects were progressing and to meet the man on the street.

“Abu Dhabi will continue to work towards its own comprehensive, multifaceted vision. That vision is to continue to create a confident, secure society and to build a sustainable, open and globally competitive economy.” These words, spoken by the current President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, best describe the role he has played since succeeding his late father, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who passed away in November 2004. Leading up to Sheikh Khalifa’s presidency, his list of achievement includes updating legislative regulations that aided social and economic development throughout the country; forming the Abu Dhabi Defence Force; and personally overseeing the construction of public hospitals. He has been the driving force behind Abu Dhabi’s modernisation, having launched the UAE’s first strategic plan and he restructured the Federal Government and Government of Abu Dhabi. Under his tenure, the world’s tallest tower Burj Khalifa was realised.

HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum When HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum was born on July 15, 1949, no one could have predicted the major role he would play in fast-tracking Dubai’s development to meteoric proportions. Since Sheikh Mohammed became Ruler of Dubai and Vice President of the UAE on January 4, 2006, the emirate and its economy has reached new heights of progress. Dubai’s skyline now boasts the tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa, and its landscape has been altered to include a number of manmade offshore projects such as Palm Jumeirah. Sheikh Mohammed has successfully steered Dubai through the good times and the 5

bad, from the economic highs of 2007 to the global recession that followed. Today optimism is at an all-time high with new mega-projects underway and the city is preparing to host the Middle East’s first ever World Expo in 2020. Sheikh Mohammed believes success can only be achieved with forethought. “A leader must set out a clear vision, which he must trust absolutely,” he says. “If he loses that trust, he will begin to hesitate and falter. We don’t get into our cars and set out on the road without knowing our destination. We have to know where we really want to go.”

HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, t he brot her of Dubai’s r uler, Sheik h Mohammed, is president of the Department of Civil Aviation, CEO of The Emirates Group chairman of Dubai World. Over the past 25 years, he has spearheaded the expansion of Dubai’s aviation industry. Under his leadership, Dubai International Airport is now on track to overtake London’s Heathrow Airport as the world’s busiest airport for international passenger traffic. Emirates, which he established in 1985, is the fastest-growing international carrier. “It is hard to imagine Dubai without Emirates and Emirates without Dubai,” he says. “The growth of both demonstrates what can be achieved by a small emirate within a small country.”

The Crown Prince of Dubai and the emirate’s ruler-in-waiting is the son of HH Sheikh Mohammed. Sheikh Hamdan is an accomplished sportsman and writer and has backed programmes that better involve UAE youth in the nation’s infrastructure development with a focus on education, healthcare, social services and sports. A recent initiative is #mydubai, encouraging visitors and residents to create an autobiography of the city through social media. “A city’s story is created by its people and as we look towards a prosperous future, it’s time to join together and show the world how 2.1 million people can create one remarkable story,” he says. Thanks to Sheikh Hamdan and the next generation of UAE leaders, the nation’s future looks brighter than ever.

Charting history As the Volvo Ocean Race sails into Abu Dhabi it evokes memories of a maritime past Words by

Dhow building in the UAE

The UAE boasts a rich maritime heritage that includes pearl diving, dhow building, fishing and sea trading. Historically, the Arabian Gulf played a vital role in everyday life and this is something the country’s leaders are striving to preserve. One of the most significant ways the sea has contributed to the country’s identity is through pearling. Indeed, the warm waters were home to an abundance of gems, which gave rise to a successful pearling industry during the 18th and 19th centuries. The industry took a hit in the 1930s due to the rise of the cultivated pearl. It didn’t matter for long, however, as the discovery of oil in the 1960s provided a generous new revenue stream, allowing the country to diversify its economy and develop into the modern metropolis it is today. Still, the country has not lost touch with its maritime heritage. Traces can be seen in and around the city, from dhow building at Al Bateen Shipyard to abra rides at The Souk at Qaryat Al Beri, which are complemented by a variety of more modern pursuits on the water including F1 powerboat racing. Currently, all eyes are on the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team competing in the 12th edition of the Volvo Ocean Race. Sailors including Emirati Adil Khaled, will spend eight months combating the unpredictable waters of four oceans in a carbonfibre boat. The round-the-world race is as much a test of vigour as it is sailing ability. Highly skilled crews come up against waves as high as 16 metres and cope with scorching days, freezing nights and cramped conditions. When the Volvo Ocean Race sails into Abu Dhabi for a threeweek stopover between December 12 and January 3 it will be a moment of pride with the city celebrating its past and present.

Home-grown talent It’s a scene not uncommon in the childhood memories of many UAE locals: sat in the family home listening to grandfathers speak of their time at sea sailing dhow boats and diving for pearls long before the invention of today’s hi-tech scuba gear. Although the stories are commonplace, relatively few have followed in the footsteps of their ancestors to build careers on the ocean. Emirati sailor Adil Khalid is hoping to encourage nationals to return to the sea. Inspired by his elders, he started sailing at the age of 10 and began competitive training at 13. Some of his greatest successes to date include winning the Arab Games in 2007 and representing the UAE at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. Now, he is the helmsman and sail trimmer for Abu Dhabi

Ocean Racing, responsible for tasks such as steering and maintaining boat speed. He returns to the celebrated race for the second time. “We used to sail and make our living from the sea before the cars and luxuries of today,” he says. “It’s important to me to keep that seafaring history alive and to inspire the kids to remember our history and heritage as a sailing nation.” Khalid is the first Arab to participate in the Volvo Ocean Race and was so determined to take part that he gave up training for the 2012 Olympics to join the previous edition in 2011/12. He hopes to inspire a new generation of Emiratis to take to the water. “One of my dreams has been to represent my nation worldwide as a sailor. I feel very proud to be a role model for the kids in the

country and, I suppose, I feel this more keenly than ever now that I’m a father myself,” he says. “It’s also great to be able to tell people around the world about Abu Dhabi and the UAE because sometimes they have the strangest ideas about it. When they find out about our beautiful waters and the great winter climate, which is ideal for sailing, they’re keen to know more.”

Leading the crew Another star of the crew is skipper Ian Walker. The Englishman is one of Britain’s most successful sailors, with two Olympic silver medals and a host of other accomplishments

under his belt. As well as bringing much offshore sailing experience to the team, Walker has proven himself as a manager, leading the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team to victory in a number of in-port races and during legs of the 2011/12 competition, finishing in fifth place overall. This year, the crew’s racing season kicked off to a good start when they won the Round Britain and Ireland Race, beating the previous record for the course. After this warm up, they went on to take the lead in the first leg of the Volvo Ocean Race from Alicante to Cape Town. Now, the focus is on Cape Town to Abu Dhabi. “This time round, we really want to be the first boat into Abu Dhabi,” says Walker “That’s going to be really difficult because the leg here from Cape Town is fraught with difficulty. It really is man against man and team against team. The ocean is the referee.” Fortunately, greeting the teams in Abu Dhabi will be a 23-day festival between December 12 and January 3. Over 200,000 visitors are expected to flock to Abu Dhabi’s shores, where they’ll be treated to top-class entertainment such as concerts by famous musicians, screenings of the BBC’s Blue Planet in Concert, hospitality events, familyfriendly activities in the Destination Village on the Corniche and much more. The highlight of the festival will see the sailing teams compete in an in-port race on

January 2, before setting sail to their next port of call, Sanya in China. “Last race, the stopover was very well received,” Walker says. “This year, the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority [TCA Abu Dhabi] has tripled its efforts. They have very ambitious targets in terms of visitor numbers so they know they have to raise the bar and I’m very confident they’ll do it. I know a lot of the initiatives and I’m looking forward to the stopover. I alone have about 30 or 40 friends and family coming so there’s quite a buzz about it.” With regards to winning the race, the team is optimistic: “I was very confident at the end of our training period because I know we’ve got good people both in the sailing team and the shore team,” says Walker. “We’ve done the race twice before so I think our organisation is very good. We’ve got a very clear plan and strategy. If you’ve not done the race before, you don’t really know what the first leg is going to be

like, how cold the southern ocean is going to be and what the trickiest paths are. Now, I have a very clear picture in my mind of what each obstacle and hurdle is on each of the legs. Of course, I’m also conscious that my understanding of that is based on just two trips around the world, so we have to be ready for all eventualities.” This year’s team is completed by returning crew members Simon Fisher, Justin Slattery and Roberto Bermudez de Castro, plus newcomers Phil Harmer and Luke Parkinson and Daryl Wislang who has competed in the race twice previously but with different teams.

Celebrating Emirati culture

10

A grand celebration of Emirati culture will take place at the Destination Village on Abu Dhabi Corniche’s breakwater on December 26 and 27. Hosted by TCA Abu Dhabi, the weekend festival will showcase everything from authentic cuisine to arts and crafts and musical entertainment including the BBC’s award-winning Blue Planet series brought to life by the National Symphony Orchestra performing on a specially designed floating stage. A large portion of the festival’s programme, however, will be dedicated to the city’s maritime heritage with a dhow

race on December 27 involving 100 of the traditional sailing vessels, which is set to be a spectacular sight. Visitors can learn more about the natural habitat by attending ocean conservation exhibitions and turtle conservation talks. Later in the evening, there will be a special Oud sea chanting performance followed by an open-air screening of A Grain of Sand – a ‘documovie’ produced by Abu Dhabi-based filmmaker Ray Haddad that tells the story of the music and heritage of pearl divers in Abu Dhabi. The western region of Al Gharbia represents 51 percent of the total area of the UAE. Known for its natural beauty, Al Gharbia is home to the world’s highest sand dunes at Tel Moreeb and has pristine shores that extend along 350 kilometres, making it a meeting point of the desert and the sea. This month marks the start of the annual Al Dhafra Camel Festival which takes place at Madinat Zayed in Al Gharbia in the western region of Abu Dhabi. A celebration of the past, the festival runs from December 20 until January 1 and attracts thousands of visitors looking for a uniquely cultural experience in the capital. The festival is famous for hosting the world’s only camel beauty contest – Mazayana – where tens of thousands of camels compete for a stake in the AED50 million in prizes. Aside from Mazayana, there are competitions for various traditional handicrafts and even the best locally produced dates. The market at Al Dhafra Camel Festival – an initiative by the Cultural Programs and Heritage Festival Committee – is the best place to pick up handmade items and appreciate traditional Bedouin crafts such as pottery, embroidery, jewellery-making and carpentry. Other highlights at the festival include the Falcon Competition organised by the Emirates Falconers’ Club and races with Arabian greyhounds, called salukis. One of the main draws however is the Heritage Camel Race that sees hundreds of talented riders participate. Competition may be fierce on the day but the sportsmanship on display is reflective of true Arabian values.

Talking shop For help deciding which mall to visit first, the city’s best personal shoppers offer a nudge in the right direction WORDS BY

CATHERINE LANGLEY

Shopping is something of a national pastime in the UAE and in recent years Abu Dhabi has expanded its retail scene dramatically, with a varied selection of malls opening in the capital, including the new Yas Mall on Yas Island. From high-street bastions such as Abu Dhabi Marina Mall, which houses more than 400 stores, to family friendly sanctuaries like Dalma Mall, there is something to suit every type of shopper. With the rapid increase in the number of shopping destinations to choose from, however, it can be a challenge to decide which mall to visit and when. With this in mind, Concierge has called on the city’s leading personal shoppers to provide an insider’s guide to the best retail zones so visitors can make the most of the fantastic shopping opportunities.

Dalma Mall With close to 500 stores, Dalma Mall provides a good variety of brands and is known as one of the top family friendly retail retreats in the capital. Kirsty Volpe, an image consultant and personal stylist at House of Colour, says: “One of Dalma Mall’s biggest selling points is that it caters for the whole family. There is a selection of entertainment attractions for children while adults can take advantage

1

of several stores they won’t find anywhere else in the city, such as Hobbs, Wallis and Pottery Barn. If visitors are seeking to buy from locally-based designers, GISELLAblu by the talented Sacha Plumbridge is worth a look for its feminine pieces while Feathers UAE at Dalma Mall specialises in beautiful, one-of-a-kind handbags that provide the finishing touch.” For a quick recharge, Volpe recommends grabbing a table at Gloria Jean’s or, for a more leisurely meal, heading to Petit Café. There’s also plenty of entertainment for children, she says: “The Adventure Zone at Adventure HQ is the most talked about indoor play area in Abu Dhabi right now. It’s an adventure park with a range of activities including a climbing wall. Children won’t be bored. Fun City is a good option for younger children, but there can be queues on weekends. The mall also has a virtual reality cinema with special effects.”

Having opened its doors just over a year ago, World Trade Center (WTC) Mall has already established itself as one of Abu Dhabi’s retail frontrunners. It has more than 110 stores, with many more set to open in 2015. Alena Hrabinova, a personal shopper at House of Fraser department store shares her mall highlights: “WTC Mall is home to the first international House of Fraser flagship store, which is the only premium department store in Abu Dhabi,” she says. “At House of Fraser, Deepa Gurnani offers a range of stunning and unique accessories including belts, bracelets and hair accessories. Limited-edition pieces can also be found from McQ by Alexander McQueen and Love Moschino.” For traditional souvenirs and unique jewellery and accessories, Hrabinova advises a trip to the WTC Souk, which is connected to the mall. Dining at Abu Dhabi’s first P.F. Chang’s is also advised: “The menu offers an array of tasty Asian fusion dishes,” she says. “For a quick coffee however, I

like Brioche Doree, which also has a great selection of teas.” Younger visitors won’t be bored. “Cool Kidz on the lower ground floor has a huge play area that’s ideal for families,” says Hrabinova. “For mothers and daughters, the Hello Kitty Spa is an amazing spot to enjoy beauty treatments together. There’s also a cinema that screens all the latest movies.” Location: First Khalifa Street Contact: 02 5082400 or visit: wtcad.ae A personal shopping session with Alena Hrabinova at House of Fraser Abu Dhabi is complimentary with no obligation to spend. Go back to the future with MB&F ‘time machines’

MB&F watches tell more than just the time. Boasting complex mechanisms and visually imaginative, they’re essentially pieces of mechanical art. Inspired by founder Maximilian Büsser’s childhood, most of the timepieces, dubbed ‘machines’, are built to resemble key symbols of his past. Büsser says: “I used to pretend to be Hans Solo or Captain Kirk when I was a child, so I created a piece of art that looked like a spaceship, which was the Horological Machine No.3, or HM3. Also, as I used to make model aeroplanes as a kid, we built the Thunderbolt, HM4, inspired by the double reactors of the plane.” Timepieces fall into two categories: Horolog ical Machines and L egacy Machines – the latter of which encompasses more classic-looking pieces than the main 1 Limited edition platinum LM2 2 & 6 Starfleet Machine 3 HM5 CarbonMacrolon 4 HM5 Thunderbolt 5 Maximilian Büsser 7 JwlryMachine

line. In each case, Büsser comes up with the concept and then compiles a team to turn his vision into a reality. He admits that many of his ideas are near impossible to achieve, as complex movements are teamed with highly inventive exteriors. Describing the HM4, Büsser says: “The difficulty here was that the movement is flat but the time indicator is vertical. We were the first ones ever to do that.” MB&F timepieces are so unique that the brand has encountered a mixed reaction. When the HM5 was launched two years ago, for instance, some found it hard to understand the piece, which resembles a digital watch from the 1980s but is, in fact, mechanical. “We received a lot of negative comments on the internet,” says Büsser. “People said ‘I don’t understand it, it’s ugly’ and my team were upset. Yet the sell-out of that particular piece was the fastest we’ve ever achieved in our history.”

MB&F / S HOP

Success despite criticism seems to be a recurring theme with MB&F and Büsser is determined to not stray from his dream. “What I do is so radical and different to the usual watchmaking world that many people just don’t get it,” he says. “If everybody liked all our products, however, then I would feel as if we were doing something wrong.” MB&F credits its unique approach to the many artisans that make up the company. Büsser explains: “My parents always told me to treat people the way I want to be treated and I actually made a business model out of that. If I were a supplier who worked for a watchmaker, for example, I would appreciate it if the watch brand credited me, but this isn’t the industry

4

norm. I decided I wanted to credit the people that do the work.” As a result, customers can now go to the company’s website and view pictures and biographies of all the members of the MB&F team, from designers and case constructors to the watchmakers themselves. It’s this personal touch that sets the brand apart. In 2015, MB&F will celebrate its 10-year anniversary with a new watch, the HM6 Space Pirate, which Büsser describes as the “most radical and crazy piece we’ve done to date”. The design, which took three years to perfect, features gentle curves and bulging “eyes” (transparent domes). With only 100 pieces available, fans will need to be quick to get their hands on it.

At its boutique at The Galleria, Fendi customers can personalise the design of select bags to match the wearer’s personal style. Bags are available in a variety of colours in rich materials such as textured Cuoio Romano leather; exotic skins including ostrich and crocodile; and mink, fox and rabbit fur. Depending on the design, shoppers can also choose from a selection of embroidery options where stylish patterns are created using beading or stitching. A nation's pride As the United Arab Emirates celebrates National Day this month, Concierge portrays the country's rich history through its most prized symbols

It's hard to believe that 100 years ago, Dubai and Abu Dhabi were small fishing and trading villages sustained by the riches of the Arabian Gulf. Today both cities are transformed and attract millions of visitors each year. Progress has been rapid yet amid the impressive strides ahead, the nation's roots have not been forgotten and through arts, culture and enduring symbols, a rich legacy is preserved. The falcon is the national bird featured in the country's coat of arms in tribute to its bond with the desert Bedouin while yola dancing is a traditional Emirati dance performed by men at key cultural festivals throughout the country. Another pillar of UAE culture is Arabic calligraphy, an ancient art form that is a fundamental part of the local artistic scene. Elsewhere, culinary traditions extend to smoking flavoured shisha pipes and enjoying dates as a reminder of desert life many years ago

73

The cultural identity of the United Arab Emirates is also reflected in its iconic buildings. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is a stunning example of local architecture and a much-loved national symbol, commissioned by the late HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Another symbolic structure is Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain. Built in the 1890s, it is remarkably well preserved and is one of the country's most historic buildings

The UAE boasts a deep connection to the sea. From dhow building to pearl diving and fishing, in the past, livelihoods depended on the waters of the Arabian Gulf. The rich maritime past is celebrated today in dhow races while the traditional boats continue to be crafted in the capital's Al Bateen area and on the banks of Dubai Creek

76

The majestic desert is undoubtedly the symbol that is associated most with the UAE. Dubai and Abu Dhabi have risen from the sweeping sands to become major visitor destinations and the dunes that once sustained the country's first communities now present a wonderful landscape where visitors can gain an insight into a rich past

Dhow spotting For centuries, traditional wooden boats known as dhows were relied upon to keep the UAE's bustling trading ports and markets afloat. Nowadays, waterways such as Dubai Creek and Abu Dhabi's Mina Zayed Port are key points to spot the remaining ships still in use gliding majestically on the water. They remain great reminders of the past and of the deep-rooted traditions that reaffirm the country's long-lasting connection to the sea.

My life in Abu Dhabi Rohini Gehani, founder of Rivaage boutique, talks about life in the UAE capital

1 Abu Dhabi Corniche 2 Stratos at Le Royal Méridien Abu Dhabi

While originally from India, I have lived in the UAE almost my whole life. Despite being here for so long I have never questioned my decision to stay as there is always something new – a great event or another sensational development – which means I never tire of seeing the expansion and growth within the city. To immerse myself in culture, there’s nothing better than visiting the older districts along the Corniche. A stroll around here offers a real sense of how this city started and is a reminder of how far it has come in such a short space of time. When I was growing up, my brother and I used to visit the Corniche every evening. It always brings back a lot of memories. I have a wonderful family that I love and adore, so my weekends are usually spent with them, whether it’s for a long lunch or a late breakfast at one of the restaurants at Yas Island. When eating out, I also recommend Zuma Abu Dhabi for the delicious miso black cod, Stratos at Le Royal Méridien Abu Dhabi with its revolving lounge bar and Bord Eau at Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi for the chocolate extravaganza dessert. The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort,

Abu Dhabi has a peaceful atmosphere and is ideal for a special dinner or a relaxed evening with friends. The most remarkable place to see in Abu Dhabi is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. I often recommend visiting family and friends to have a guided tour as the story of the mosque is actually very surprising. This country has given me the opportunity to pursue a career that I’ve always wanted – as founder and managing director of Rivaage boutique, I f ind this region can really springboard people in the right direction. I’ve noticed an increase in global fashion brands coming to the Middle East with, for example, the Chanel show and new Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience, which is so exciting and elevates the overall region as an international fashion hub. When it comes to shopping, the World Trade Centre Mall is a favourite and House of Fraser is a definite highlight – not just because Rivaage is available in Abu Dhabi exclusively there, but also due to the overall store experience. This is the best time to be in Abu Dhabi when the weather is beautiful and the buzz of the city is incredible. You’ll never be short of something to do.

Breguet, the innovator. High frequency and high precision

A concentrated blend of horological innovations, the Classique ChronomĂŠtrie 7727 with its balance fitted on magnetic pivots and operating at a frequency of 10 Hz achieves an average rate of -1 to +3 seconds per day. Notably thanks to complete mastery of silicon properties and magnetism, this new milestone in the field of high-precision mechanical watchmaking embodies the spirit of innovation of Abraham-Louis Breguet. History is still being written...
