LEADING THE WAY ——— Concierge talks history and heritage with Longines’ president Walter von Känel
With a heritage that dates back to 1832, Longines is no ordinary brand. The Swiss watchmaker has the honour of having the oldest brand name in use and it’s one that tells the story of its illustrious origins. In 1832, Auguste Agassiz joined a trading office established in Saint-Imier in Switzerland, which remains the base of Longines even today. He rose up the ranks and the company was renamed Agassiz & Co., producing timepieces under the établissage system that saw watchmakers work at home and supply their creations to trading offices. Over time his nephew, Ernest Francillo, took over operations, and came up with the idea of bringing all the stages involved with watchmaking under one roof. Francillon bought two adjoining pieces of land in 1866 on the right bank of the River Suze, which was known locally as Les Longines. This name was then adopted by the factory built there in 1867. Decades of innovations, expansion and world acclaim followed. Today, as part of Swatch Group, Longines’ visionary approach continues to shine through as Walter von Känel, president of Longines, explains: “Our brand has respected three values in its history: elegance, tradition and performance. Since the beginning, those elements are mirrored in our collections and present in all our activities; they are part of Longines’ DNA.
30
“I like to describe watches as emotional branded consumer goods and Longines has always respected its DNA in the aesthetics and philosophy of its products. Longines’ signature consists of a truly timeless elegance based on a rich heritage that keeps up-to-date with a blend of refinement and classicism.” At the helm of Longines since 1988, Walter von Känel is considered an icon in the international watchmaking industry and remains refreshingly frank in his approach. “My role consists of waking up very early to be able to take care of the paperwork and be available for my teams. I go in the field and travel very often, talking to the local people. I do not stay behind a computer writing never-ending e-mails. Actually, I do not use a computer at all,” says von Känel. “At the beginning of my career, the manufacturing managers were dictating the offer of watches. Nowadays the consumers’ desires are translated into the collections a brand presents. “There have been a lot of changes in the whole watchmaking industry, in particular with the creation of the Swatch Group that transformed the watchmaking industry deeply. Before this, the technical developments used to command the markets, and afterwards, technical development had to adapt itself to market needs. Longines is proud to be an important member of the Swatch Group.”

“FOR ME, THERE ARE THREE KEY WORDS: CONTINUIT Y, CONSISTENCY AND FOCUS”
Famous personalities and celebrities that span the worlds of sports, arts and entertainment, including Kate Winslet, are honoured as Ambassadors of Excellence for Longines. They are each carefully chosen to reflect the inherent values of the brand. “Kate Winslet joined the Longines family in 2010. Like all our Ambassadors of Elegance, she embodies our identity and our image around the world. Over the last six years, Kate has personified the Longines motto ‘Elegance is an attitude’. Kate has also demonstrated the elegance of the heart through her work with the Golden Hat Foundation, a non-profit organisation that she co-founded in 2010 which is dedicated to changing public perception of people with autism,” explains von Känel. A pioneering collection that blends past and present, Longines’ Heritage collection – which saw the addition of standouts such as Heritage 1969, Railroad and Heritage 1918 this year – remains one of the watchmaker’s key pillars, as von Känel explains. “We started our Heritage collection in 1987 almost 30 years ago. At the time, we were among the first watch brands to go with this trend. Today, the Heritage segment is one of the five pillars of our collection, the others being Elegance, Watchmaking Tradition, Sport and Equestrian. These five pillars reflect our values and we are lucky to have such a long history of watchmaking to rely on. For the Heritage models, we draw our inspiration from historical pieces to reissue models using modern technologies.
34
“Longines has been committed to equestrian sports since 1878. It is thus natural that the brand decided to launch a collection dedicated to this long-lasting passion: The Longines Equestrian Collection. The Longines Equestrian Pocket Watch Jockey 1878 is also part of this collection and perfectly illustrates the brand’s strong devotion to tradition.” Longines’ connection to the world of equestrian sports has also helped endear the watchmaker to the United Arab Emirates, a nation that shares a similar passion. Walter von Känel reveals that he is proud the brand is “growing substantially” in this part of the world. With its unwavering commitment to excellence, centuries of tradition and exceptionally crafted timepieces, Longines has a bright future ahead, which the company continues to steer towards. “For me, there are three keywords: continuity, consistency and focus. Longines is the leader in its price segment – 1,000 to 3,000 Swiss Francs – and maintaining this position is our main objective.” —— Discover the latest Longines timepiece collections at the Rivoli boutique in Mall of the Emirates. IWC Schaffhausen, Official ‘Festival-Time’ Partner of the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF), returns with one of the festival’s most prestigious awards – the IWC Filmmaker Award. The winner of the annual award will receive a grant of US$100,000 to help bring their ideas to fruition on the big screen. At last year’s DIFF, the IWC Filmmaker Award recognised aspiring Emirati director Layla Kaylif for her film The Letter Writer.

—— As managing director of the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF), Shivani Pandya has been with the Festival since its inception, playing an instrumental role in the launch of key strategic initiatives including Dubai Film Market and bringing charitable organisations such as amfAR Cinema against AIDS and Oxfam to Dubai. “With each edition of Dubai International Film Festival, we’ve been adding new elements like Dubai Film Market and The Beach screenings. This year we’ve added on Virtual Reality films that will be presented at the festival and we’re also looking at Virtual and Augmented Reality experiences. We’ve got a fantastic, eclectic programme this year, including several Emirati feature films. Sometimes people assume that DIFF is strictly ‘invitation-only’ but it really is for everyone, with red carpet gala screenings taking place at Madinat Jumeirah Arena as well as screenings at Madinat Theatre in the Souk Madinat Jumeirah, Vox Cinemas at Mall of the Emirates and The Beach, adjacent Jumeirah Beach Residence. When we started 13 years ago, there were fewer cinema theatres so it was a very different curation of programmes and very few Arab and Emirati
52
films were being made. We now see anywhere between four to seven feature films produced every year and the UAE has seen some of the biggest box office admissions in the Middle East region. We’re extremely proud of our impact on the local filmmaking scene. There are now greater opportunities for funding and packaging films, so DIFF is not just about visibility. Apart from curating and presenting different films, we’re also focused internationally. For example, we showcased Arab cinema at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles and Lincoln Centre in New York. We’ve also become an Academy-qualifying festival, which opens the door for films from the Arab world to be eligible to be nominated for the Oscars. I love film, there’s no doubt about that, but the other aspects that really drive and motivate me personally are the results we’re seeing in terms of the investments made – and I’m not talking about just financial. We’ve seen huge results. We’ve been able to develop and shape the festival the way we want it to be. Aside from just presenting films, it’s developing cinema by working with filmmakers and educational institutions. We’ve championed lots of different areas and done everything from
getting involved at the script stage to showcasing local projects to the international market to help films get made. This is the fifth edition that we’re working with IWC Schaffhausen for the IWC Filmmaker Award and it’s one that’s working really brilliantly. The award has helped highlight a lot of filmmakers from the Gulf region. We are really proud of our association with them. IWC Schaffhausen started the award at DIFF and because of its success, they have since introduced it to other international festivals. I get asked quite often about the future of Arab cinema. I think, for me, the key element is getting audiences to now come out and watch more films. At the festival we have full houses for a lot of movies that are not necessarily commercial launches, so I’d encourage everyone to try something new. To keep this momentum it will take a combined, strategic effort to make filmmaking a profession. After starting at an education level, they need to be absorbed into the industry and get a job. We need to get everyone involved. Of course, we can come up with ideas and try to start new things, but we would also like strategic institutions and the wider community to support the movement.”

IMAN KAMEL
—— Egyptian filmmaker Iman Kamel has directed five short films since 1995. Jeanne D’Arc is Kamel’s second collaboration with Kuwaiti producer Talal Al-Muhanna and tells the story of a lost diary written by a revolutionary Bedouin girl named Jehanne, which is discovered in the western deserts of Egypt by a filmmaker from Cairo. In her search for the missing activist, the filmmaker traces remarkable stories of revolt by women in her country. “Jeanne D’Arc is a cinematic homage to the female artists from Egypt and to the imaginative power of storytelling. A wonderfully diverse group of contemporary artists associated themselves with this film project. Therefore visual artworks, poems, songs and contemporary dance have become inherent in the web of the film. Their shared stories of daily resilience in the midst of socio-political turmoil and lend a sensitive perspective to the film. I regard DIFF as my home festival, as I participated in many producer and market events in previous editions. DIFF also premiered my debut feature film Nomad’s Home in 2010, where it received a special mention from the jury and travelled the
54
world ever since. They have been following my new project since its inception and finally they were able to get the world premiere of the film. For me, that means we will be premiering Jeanne D’Arc in a warm atmosphere, amongst friends and colleagues. We hope that engaged audiences will relate to the intimate revelations of the female protagonists of the film, and that it will stir a debate about the situation of the Egyptian women today far beyond clichés and prejudices. DIFF is emerging to be one of the most prestigious and most important festivals in the region. I am very honoured and thrilled to participate in the main Muhr competition. Including my film into this core of the festival’s programming is conveying DIFF’s commitment to showcasing courageous and rich cinema from the Arab world. Festivals like Cannes and the Berlinale are becoming more and more conventional in their main programming, while DIFF is actually becoming more daring year after year in showcasing films that are made differently; hybrid films that experiment with diverse forms of cinema language. The quality of the films shown
at their main Muhr award competition is therefore pristine. Today Arab films are staging high on the international arena, and DIFF plays an essential role in this process. I started as a visual artist but was very much interested in other disciplines like contemporary dance as well as working with actors. During my studies at the Art Academy in Berlin I travelled extensively in Africa, China and Russia, producing notebooks filled with writing. During one of my presentations the director of the Film Academy in Berlin approached me and conveyed that everything I create has to do with filmmaking. He invited me to work with a team of his students. During this process of making my first short film, the enthusiastic and dedicated filmmaker in me was born. My passion is cinema. I would love to support the upcoming generation of young Arab talent in every way possible. I am full of ideas and energy. My next project will be a feature fiction. My dream is to create my next indie film attracting international as well as Arab investors. It will be a peculiar mix of a musical road movie with a touch of sci-fi.”

FRESH APPROACH ——— Newly appointed executive chef Chris Curtis looks to make his mark at the InterContinental Abu Dhabi
Hailing from Australia, a country renowned for being a melting pot of cuisines, Chris Curtis, the new executive chef at InterContinental Abu Dhabi, feels at home with the property’s multi-cultural culinary offerings. “InterContinental Abu Dhabi offers a variety of flavours from Italian to Asian and Lebanese. Some of our key restaurants include Chamas, an iconic restaurant launched in 2009 that offers guests a variety of traditional Brazilian food along with a live Latin American band to enhance the dining experience. Circo, which opened in 2015, presents authentic Italian cuisine in a vibrant setting reminiscent of the old-style European circus tents. There’s also Byblos Sur Mer, a Lebanese restaurant that overlooks the marina, Belgian Café and the legendary Fishmarket restaurant, boasting Thai-inspired food and gorgeous beachfront views “One of the reasons I joined InterContinental Abu Dhabi is because it has a reputation for being a leader in the UAE culinary scene with a variety of award-winning restaurants. Similarly I think the city’s dining scene has grown drastically, bringing one of a kind restaurant experiences and high quality dishes to guests. The influx of new restaurants in the capital has increased with time, and I believe that its F&B sector really stands amongst the best in the region.” Despite being new to the Abu Dhabi hotel, Curtis has plenty of experience working within the InterContinental Hotels Group having previously held positions at InterContinental Danang in Vietnam and InterContinental Shenzhen, China. Recounting how the culinary arts first caught his interest, he says: “I have always enjoyed cooking as a child, but what really got me started was experiencing my very first Chinese takeout when I was young. After that, I started to experiment on weekends, trying to replicate Chinese food with no real idea of what I was doing. It’s safe to say, I ended up with some very interesting results. As I continued to try new things, I became hooked and my journey started from there. The best thing about cooking is that you can be creative with your dishes – the ability to combine genuine passion and a career is rare to find.”
Now leading the culinary charge at one of the capital’s top hotels, Curtis reveals his key responsibilities range from overseeing day-to-day operations to managing events and catering. “It is exciting because no one day is similar to another, as we are always doing something different and producing something exceptional for our guests.” When it comes to sourcing products and ingredients, the chef is clear he prefers to go local where possible, supporting the UAE’s communities and farms. Although with such a broad range of fare on offer, the remainder of his produce is generally sourced from all corners of globe, from United States to his homeland Australia. Speaking of his native connections, Curtis reveals: “The main influence Australia has had on my cooking is the attraction towards modern trends and the respect for quality and range of products available back home – even the most basic cafés have a selection of very innovative dishes. “When it comes to creating a new dish, I start by looking at what produce is available in the market during that season and the quality of each ingredient, and then build the dish from there. Then for existing dishes, I look for a ways to improve on the overall flavour by using different ingredients or spices.” It’s clear Curtis has a tough time when asked to whittle down his favourite dishes. He explains: “To be honest it’s very hard to pick – as our outlets have great depth and variety when it comes to food. I love Chamas for its Brazilian barbecue meats, and the Fish Market as Thai is one of my all-time favourite cuisines and they have great selection of seafood in an authentic style. This list goes on!” Excited, although a little tight-lipped on the finer details, he reveals there’s plenty for guests to look forward to in the upcoming year. “We are putting the final touches on a new restaurant opening at InterContinental Abu Dhabi, until then I can’t say much but we look forward to showcasing even more of our fantastic culinary options.” —— To book a table at one of the restaurants at InterContinental Abu Dhabi, contact: 02 6666888

It’s hard to believe that several decades ago cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi were humble fishing and trading villages sustained by the riches of the Arabian Gulf. Today the UAE’s seven emirates, in particular Dubai and Abu Dhabi, have transformed into modern metropolises attracting millions of visitors each year. Progress, which has been incredibly impressive, to say the least, has happened at an almost unbelievably rapid rate. Yet amid the nation’s ever-quickening strides towards the future, its roots have not been forgotten. Through arts, culture and enduring symbols, a rich legacy is preserved. Today, National Day celebrations are a highly anticipated annual opportunity for Emiratis to proudly share their love for their homeland, with the country brought to life by a riot of colour and festivities. Each of the UAE’s vibrant emirates offers a unique world for visitors to explore, where heritage and natural bounty proudly intertwine with cutting-edge modernity. In the emirates culture and custom remain an integral part of everyday life, and falconry is among the many traditions still celebrated today. The national bird of the UAE, falcons have long played a vital role in the lives of the region’s early
8
Bedouin dwellers and today homages to these majestic birds can be seen all over the UAE, on bank notes, official documents, architecture and in the country’s coat of arms. Hospitality is another cornerstone of Arabian culture and nowhere is it more apparent than in the traditions surrounding food in the UAE. Dates have been consumed in this part of the world for thousands of years and were a vital lifeline for Bedouin tribes surviving in the harsh, arid desert environment. Still revered in the region, the fruit remains a regular feature at mealtimes and is considered a much-loved symbol of UAE culture. In Al Ain and Abu Dhabi, large swathes of land are given over to date palm plantations, a number of which, some claim, have been there for several thousand years. These days family and community get-togethers hark back to the tribal gatherings of the past as social pastimes such as smoking flavoured shisha and drinking Arabic coffee are still treasured. There are a variety of venues across the UAE, including Dubai Museum and Heritage Village in Abu Dhabi, that visitors can call on to learn more about these interesting local customs.

With over 100 varieties of dates grown in the country alone, there’s a lot for visitors to discover. The Fruit and Vegetable Market at Abu Dhabi’s Mina Zayed often sells seasonal varieties or, alternatively, visitors can purchase beautifully packaged boxes of luxury dates from specialised boutiques such as Bateel.

The story of the UAE’s evolution, especially the emir ates of Dubai and Abu Dhabi is one of a mbition and ingenuit y Both urban jungles arisen from the desert, Dubai is arguably one of the most innovative and cutting-edge cities in the world, while Abu Dhabi is well on its way to becoming the region’s main hub for arts and culture. And its here, in the UAE capital, that visitors can delve into the nation’s rich heritage as a host of historical sights and buildings are open to the public. Explore the many architectural sights and ancient forts, including Qasr Al Muwaji. This historic building has watched over the emirate’s heritage heartland of Al Ain for nearly a century. Back in Dubai, the picturesque waterways of the Creek occupy a special place in the history of the emirate. Towering skyscrapers and futuristic architecture may now define Dubai’s modern landscape, but the city which stands today grew from these humble creek banks. The emirate evolved in tandem with this stretch of water as it facilitated a bustling trade and the fishing and pearl diving industries flourished. The landscape of the emirate however changed radically following the decline of the local pearl diving industry in the 1970s and the discovery of oil. This change in direction saw the Creek transformed and the city expanded around
62
it. Nowadays, Dubai Creek is still an attraction in its own right with visitors flocking to the historic area and its surrounding sights, Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood and the famed Gold Souk. The story of the UAE’s evolution, especially the emirates of Dubai and Abu Dhabi is one of ambition and ingenuity, of regional and international talents coming together to create a unique urban community that is filled with modern-day marvels. With the pace of change showing no sign of abating, existing and future projects have affirmed the UAE’s reputation as home to some of the world’s most dynamic destinations. Among its many buzz-worthy attractions, the UAE lays claim to Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower, The Dubai Mall, the world’s biggest shopping complex, the ambitious Dubai Water Canal, joining Business Bay to the Arabian Gulf and Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi, the record-breaking inclining hotel, to name a few. Looking ahead, attractions such as The Tower at Dubai Creek Harbour, set to surpass the height of Burj Khalifa, and the opening of Louvre Abu Dhabi, among others, all ensure the UAE’s future will be brighter than ever.

Nestled within One&Only The Palm, Dubai, the spa features a number of signature treatments using the brand’s most prestigious collections such as Orchidée Impériale, as well as three sensory rituals designed exclusively for the city. Our favourite for the season is Désert d’Orient, a fabulous sensory journey that involves a delicate Silk Indulgence Milk Scrub and a Guerlain wrap to boost skin vitality and eliminate toxins. After a visit to the steam room, settle in for an expert massage, specially tailored to meet your needs and concerns, using one of four Guerlain-scented Massage Elixirs that will leave your skin feeling incredibly soft and with a glorious lingering scent that’s sure to turn heads.

Nestled within the plush surroundings of Sofitel The Palm, the FrenchPolynesian spa is the perfect setting to enjoy a luxury hammam experience. Everything from the lush ‘living wall’ to the intimate candlelights lend itself to a relaxing day out. With its own dedicated hammam menu, therapists will be able to talk you through the ritual, inspired by an ancient bathing tradition that dates back centuries. Once inside these specially heated sanctuaries, guests recline on marble as the therapist thoroughly cleanses and scrubs skin in rhythmic strokes, akin to a regular massage. One of the highlights at So SPA is the So Nourishing Hammam. This 75-minute experience makes use of an almond scrub to exfoliate before a deliciously aromatic honey and almond oil wrap leaves you with a holiday glow worthy of admiration.
Sit back, relax and soak in the unmistakable sense of New York elegance and silver service at Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah. The same can be said for the luxurious hotel’s spa that impresses from the moment you step in thanks to the natural light pouring in and plush finishings that sport a cool nude palette. The menu of treatments is extensive but visitors can best prepare for the busy festive season ahead with the Shimmering Dubai Nights spa journey. This indulgent 140-minute treatment involves a golden scrub to polish and buff dry skin as well as a relaxing massage using aromatic oils enriched with gold particles – the precious metal has long been renowned for its ability to renew and rejuvenate. The experience ends with an expert ‘gold plumpening’ facial so you’ll walk away looking and feeling radiant from head to toe.

BY THE BEACH ——— Chef Alex Antoney from Sofitel Dubai The Palm Resort & Spa welcomes guests to dine beachside at the new Laguna Lounge
From the stunning seaside setting at the luxurious Sofitel Dubai The Palm Resort & Spa to its five fabulous restaurants and lounges that present a world of flavours, there’s so much to fall in love with at this charming property. Despite its many attractions, the hotel’s newly-opened Laguna Lounge has been winning over our affection of late thanks to its menu of fresh seafood and delicious sharing dishes. “Laguna offers fresh and flavourful gastronomic delights, ranging from extensive cold and hot starters to main courses. It’s a relaxed atmosphere where guests can enjoy live music from our resident DJ,” reveals Alex Antoney, sous chef at the hotel. “Some of the dishes on the menu that I am quite proud of includes the chef’s special sushi platter and our signature mixed seafood platter.” It’s immediately evident that Antoney, who joined the hotel back in 2013, has a great deal of passion for his profession. When he was younger, he used to help out at this uncle’s restaurant and the experience gave him an insight into the hospitality industry. It sparked his decision to train further and gain the right culinary qualifications in order to set him on the path to success. “After a couple of years of working in India, I got a chance to work at the iconic hotel Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi – I would say that was a significant turning point in my career. I excelled at Italian cuisine and seafood dishes, working for three years at Mezzaluna and Sayad restaurant. During my time in the UAE capital, I also had the chance to also work with some of the world’s greatest chefs, including Heinz Winkler, Charlie Trotter and Alain Passard during the Gourmet Abu Dhabi event,” explains Antoney, who joined the luxurious Sofitel
70
Dubai The Palm Resort & Spa back in 2013. Now, he’s keen to make his mark in the Dubai, a city he holds high regard for: “Dubai really is a global destination for food – it’s perhaps one of the emirate’s most exciting aspects. You can choose from a glittering array of celebrity restaurants and fine dining or even something a little more casual. The options are endless,” he says. Careful thought has gone into sourcing ingredients for the Laguna Lounge menu, reveals Antoney. From using local suppliers for daily catches to regularly importing the freshest produce, including seafood from the Mediterranean, vegetables from Holland and herbs from France. This attention to detail spills over to every aspect of his job. “I start my day checking my mails and taking notes. This is followed by coordinating with the purchasing and receiving departments, performing quality checks and then calling suppliers for deliveries, especially when it relates to fresh seafood. After heading back to the kitchen, I check reservations and also attend the regular chefs’ meetings, usually held after the busy lunch service, where we discuss core functions of the day, upcoming events and other aspects. Then it’s back to the kitchen for the dinner service and before I leave, I check orders for the next day, review guest feedback and finalise requests.” The menu at Laguna Lounge is designed to be enjoyed and shared with family and friends, which is exactly what food means to Antoney: “To me, food brings people together and represents heart and soul.” —— To book a table at Laguna Lounge in Sofitel Dubai The Palm Resort & Spa, contact: 04 4556677

DUBAI CREEK, SOUKS AND DUBAI MUSEUM The heart of the city, the Creek is a stunning spot to catch a glimpse of authentic Dubai. See dhows (traditional boats) ply their trade along the waters while early morning visitors will see fishermen at work on the river banks. Also in this part of the city is Dubai Museum, which makes for a fascinating day out with interactive displays and exhibits charting the emirate’s history from its pearl diving days. Stop by the gold, spice and perfume souks for some traditional treasures before leaving this vibrant area.

ASK THE CONCIERGE
Ajith Hettiarachi, concierge at Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Deira Creek, highlights the best attractions and experiences for the festive season
1
Dubai has grown over the years to become one of the world’s most impressive and popular tourist destinations. This ‘must visit’ place is renowned for its superlatives, with attractions including the world’s biggest skyscraper Burj Khalifa and the biggest shopping mall, The Dubai Mall. Yet I believe the city still manages to mix a cosmopolitan lifestyle with local culture. Dubai Creek remains one the emirate’s most charming places and stands out for its traditional ambience. A contrast to Dubai’s many recordbreaking developments, this natural seawater creek reflects the true identity of the city and remains a symbol of the UAE’s established trading tradition and seafaring heritage. There is always something new to experience in the emirate such as the Dubai Water Canal that has changed the Business Bay area by connecting it with other key locations. The multi-million dollar Dubai Creek Harbour project is also set to bring more vibrancy to the emirate’s thriving historic district. At the moment, there’s a lot of excitement surrounding the recent opening of IMG Worlds of Adventure
“If guests are in town only for a weekend, I’d recommend spending an afternoon walking along Dubai Creek, visiting Kite beach in Jumeir ah or taking the fa mily to Wild Wadi waterpark”

theme park and Dubai Parks and Resorts, as well as the new season of Global Village which kicked off in November. This month, visitors can also look forward to UAE National Day celebrations, the opening of pop-up Christmas and festive markets across the city and another highly-anticipated edition of the Dubai Winter Festival, which takes place annually at Dubai Media City Amphitheatre. World-class shopping is another highlight, and this month sees the start of Dubai Shopping Festival on December 26. Considered the largest shopping and entertainment extravaganza in the Middle East, malls and other retail destinations will come alive with a host of family events and activities as well irresistible bargains. If visitors are looking for a serious ‘shop till you drop’ experience, they should head to The Dubai Mall. Meanwhile, away from the city’s big malls, the emirate’s colourful and lively souks are also worth a visit. If guests are in town only for a weekend, I’d recommend spending an afternoon walking along Dubai Creek, visiting Kite beach in Jumeirah or taking the family to Wild Wadi waterpark. For something unique, book a hot air balloon adventure or swim with the dolphins at Dubai Dolphinarium in Creek Park. Also take in magnificent desert landscape with a desert safari during the day followed by dinner at Al Mansour Dhow – Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Deira Creek’s f loating restaurant. The relaxing two-hour cruise offers great food and iconic views. Alternatively, I’d also recommend enjoying a meal at Aseelah, our new Emirati restaurant that presents a menu of authentic fare, representing a true taste of the UAE. You can also enjoy memorable sunset views from its stunning terrace.
