Majestic and loyal, the Arabian horse is deeply rooted in the history and culture of the UAE. Accustomed to the harsh desert conditions, the Bedouin tribes relied on these hardy creatures to protect their way of life. One of the oldest horse breeds in the world, Arabians are known for their speed and stamina and are regularly raced in dedicated events in the UAE. They also dominate in the field of endurance racing, which can cover distances of 160 kilometres, and are serious contenders in showjumping and eventing categories. For a true taste of the Middle East, visit one of the city’s many Arabic restaurants and feast on regional dishes. Start with hummous and moutabel with flatbread, fattoush and tabouleh salads and grilled halloumi before filling up on mixed grill. Take home the perfect souvenir in a delicate and beautiful bottle. Oudh, which is the local perfume, can be smelled wafting in many of the city’s malls, shops, offices and hotel lobbies. It comes many forms, including its original form which is similar to bark and burned to create a lingering and memorable aroma. It is also popular as oil, which can be found in perfumeries in malls across the city. Choose your favourite scent, select a bottle and dab away.

Abu Dhabi International Triathlon This gruelling triathlon includes a 3km swim, 200km cycle and 20km run past some of the emirate’s best known landmarks. Make the most of the weather and take in a slice of local culture by visiting one of the emirate’s souks. In Abu Dhabi, visit the Carpet Souk in the Mina Port area or the air-conditioned gold souk at Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre for souvenirs worth treasuring. For a modern take on a traditional shopping experience, visit the The Souk at Qaryat Al Beri or Central Market. Those looking to savour a local experience in Al Ain can practise their bargaining skills at the Old Souk, or visit Souk Al Bawadi and Souk Al Qaws, which are modern markets attached to Bawadi Mall.

A trip to Abu Dhabi would not be complete without a visit to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. One of the most picturesque structures in the capital, it is a proud reminder of the city’s culture and tradition. Experience an adrenaline rush at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the world’s biggest indoor theme park. A visit to Ferrari World will be remembered for Formula Rossa, the world’s fastest rollercoaster. The desert safari is another authentic experience. It includes a six-hour journey to the desert, which showcases the grandeur of the dunes and Arabian hospitality. Visitors will also have a chance to ride a camel. At Al Ain Zoo visitors can engage with nature and endangered species, while the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital educates tourists in the care and handling of the UAE’s majestic bird. Abu Dhabi is also the ideal place to shop for designer brands. Marina Mall, Abu Dhabi Mall and the expansion of Al Wahda Mall offer a great shopping experience. Miraj International located at Marina Office Park overlooking Emirates Palace also sells exclusive handicrafts, carpets, silks, interesting objects of arts and souvenirs. Dining is a hit after a day of shopping and excursions. My recommendation in our hotel is Porto Bello Ristorante, a perfect venue for Italian food lovers. Marco Pierre White Steakhouse & Grill at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr and Fish Market at the InterContinental Abu Dhabi are also good. Ray’s Bar on the 62nd floor of Jumeirah at Etihad Towers and Allure by Cipriani at the Yas Yacht Club are great places to meet people and have fun.

City of culture The emirate’s cultural scene is gaining momentum and events such as this month’s Abu Dhabi Festival help to support and nurture the local community

While headline-grabbing developments such as Saadiyat Island’s Cultural District are setting the tone for the emirate’s cultural future, the arts are already flourishing at grassroots level with community choirs, theatre groups and artists collectives quietly doing their bit to support Abu Dhabi’s bid to become an international cultural capital. The desire at the highest levels of government to introduce a permanent international cultural element to Abu Dhabi is reflective of the mixed bag of nationalities that paint, sing, sculpt, act and create at all levels; but organisations like the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation (ADMAF) and the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority and are also spearheading the race to preserve traditional cultural activity as well as nurture new local talent. This month’s Abu Dhabi Festival, with its banner theme of ‘Connecting Cultures’, brings together some of the world’s best known artistic talent as well as giving a number of homegrown groups the chance to shine as the emirate plots its roadmap towards an arts-focused future.

The centrepiece of the emirate’s cultural vision is the multibilliondollar Saadiyat Island development, which will eventually be home to five world-class museums and centres of artistic excellence. Headlined by the mushroomdomed Louvre Abu Dhabi, the first international cultural outpost for France’s landmark art museum – which is scheduled to open in 2015 – the Cultural District will also have a local focus in the Zayed National Museum (2016) followed by the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi (2017). Two further venues, a Maritime Museum and Performing Arts Center, designed by star architects – Japan’s Tadao Ando and the UK’s Zaha Hadid – will round out the collection by the end of the decade. This cultural quintet is expected to attract around 1.5 million visitors a year once completed and initial construction is already well under way, along with the acquisition of artworks and artefacts to fill the gleaming halls of the Jean Nouvel-designed Louvre and Lord Norman Foster’s Zayed National Museum. Visitors eager for a sneak peek, can view a selection of pieces at the Louvre Abu Dhabi: Talking Art Series exhibition at Manarat Al Saadiyat.

Watch, listen, appreciate The city will echo to the sound of music this month and into April with the line-up of events for the ninth edition of the Abu Dhabi Festival taking place at key venues around the city. Acclaimed UK theatre company Globe Education at Shakespeare’s Globe will present A Midsummer Night’s Dream and a specially adapted production of Richard Sheridan’s The Rivals will feature emerging Emirati acting talent from the Resuscitation Theatre. Visual art showcases include an exhibition of calligraphy by renowned Iraqi artist Hassan Massoudy at the Ghaf Gallery while cultural insight comes in the form of puppetry, with a Sharjah-based traditional Hakawati troupe of actors bringing to life the mythical characters of Arabia. Raga-flamenco sitar star Anoushka Shankar, Russian violin virtuoso Maxim Vengerov and Naseer Shamma – Iraq’s oud master extraordinaire – will take festival visitors on a global musical journey. And jazz lovers will enjoy a night with Natalie Cole, as she makes her Middle East debut. Dance also takes centre stage with a unique set of performances, from Shaolin monks blending kung fu, tai chi and contemporary dance to the UK’s Royal Opera House, which will premiere its production of Beloved Friend by Sir Ronald Harwood, which also features dancers from the Royal Ballet. Outside of the festival frenzy, Abu Dhabi still has plenty to offer visitors. A growing number of art galleries are springing up across the city, from

Lebanese self-taught artist Salwa Zeidan’s international arts showcase to the popular Ghaf Gallery – co-owned by Emirati artists Mohamed Kanoo and Jalal Luqman – which offers wall space to new local talent. The Fanaan art collective, a group of nine mixed-nationality locally based artists, also holds regular exhibitions at locations around town, while out on Saadiyat Island, Manarat

Al Saadiyat offers an insight into the future of art in the emirate and hosts a rotating calendar of exhibitions. Popular culture is the order of the day at Yas Island, which has hosted huge international DJs and chart-topping groups such as Coldplay, Metallica and the Scissor Sisters, while pop icon Madonna is set to brave the summer heat for a June 3 concert .

Julia Ibbini, founder, Fanaan art collective How has the local arts scene in Abu Dhabi evolved over the last few years? Abu Dhabi has an interesting dynamic in that many of the popular (visual) arts events in the city are artist-led rather than institutional or gallery-led. In the last two years particularly, we’ve seen a good number of artist-led projects take place, which play an important role in the city’s cultural scene. Are all the arts here well represented and well supported? Speaking on behalf of the visual arts, it is getting better in terms of representation. What we need are more projects and initiatives that attract artists from further afield to come to the city, either temporarily or permanently. I think that the willingness and support is there from the government perspective, it is just a matter of time. How do major events such as the Abu Dhabi Festival help promote what you do? We’ve staged a number of exhibitions to coincide with major events. Last year we exhibited alongside Abu Dhabi Art and during the Formula One

weekend. We had a tremendous response from visitors, who were excited to see contemporary work from locally based artists and many of the works sold were to international collectors. Is there growing interest in viewing art collections and investing in art from both Emiratis and expatriates? From what I’ve seen, attendance at exhibitions at all levels is very good. In terms of investment in art, I can’t speak for the very high-end work, but at a local level there is tremendous interest in investing in art from a wide cross-section of nationalities, which is important for artists such as myself. Is there ample opportunity in Abu Dhabi for artists of all levels to find a creative outlet for what they do? There are opportunities all over the city; it’s a matter of seeking them out and taking an out-ofthe-box approach to exhibiting work and developing projects. Group projects tend to work better than solo initiatives here, so seeking out fellow artists to work with is vital. As areas such as the Cultural District develop I’m sure we’ll see more and more opportunities for artists at all levels. www.juliaibbini.blogspot.com

Laura Roberts, founder, Blue Fever Jazz Ensemble How do major events help you attract new followers and fans? Community-based choirs have sprung up in the last three years, perhaps reflecting the growing population. There is more information for newcomers, both online and through interest groups. The Abu Dhabi Festival has helped by supporting community choir events for the three groups I am involved in – Blue Fever, Voices of Harmony and the Abu Dhabi Choral Group. What spurred you to set up the Blue Fever Jazz Ensemble? I started the ensemble with a member of the all-women’s barbershop group, Voices of Harmony, which has been around for seven years. I love a cappella music and jazz, so a group that incorporates both was right for me. How is cultural diversity between different nationalities in Abu Dhabi being bridged through music and artistic forms? Many art forms are represented here, but are usually performed or displayed for the culture from which they originate. Our audiences are largely made up of expats and a few Emiratis. ADMAF and the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Tourism have started to bridge this diversity by offering multicultural events. How will projects such as the Cultural District on Saadiyat Island change the face of the local arts and culture movement in the future? Those involved in community-based arts are positive and it is exciting to see it happening before our eyes. Maggie Hannan, founder, Resuscitation Theatre Are the arts thriving in Abu Dhabi right now? There is a great deal of support for homegrown visual or film artists, but other art performance forms such as opera, theatre and dance are still in their infancy. The arts scene in this area mostly relies on artists imported from outside the UAE. Until the arts are liberally reflected in Emirati schools, it will be quite some time before we see a change. That is why I am thrilled that ADMAF has taken an interest in the work we do, and is supporting us at the Abu Dhabi Festival with our production of The Rivals. What does exposure at the Abu Dhabi Festival mean for your theatre company? The support I am getting from ADMAF is absolutely massive. Although we already have a fan base of both Arabs and expats, I think that this will help promote my work to more Emiratis. Are more people interested in going to the theatre these days? I believe so, although theatre can be tricky for Emiratis. Theatre is up close and personal, unlike film where things can be airbrushed out. In Abu Dhabi, Western expats have two amateur dramatic societies, but these groups focus on popular works while we aim to produce more creative and challenging productions.

Hoda Al Khamis Kanoo, founder and artistic director, Abu Dhabi Festival How has Abu Dhabi’s cultural landscape changed over the last few years? The arts scene in Abu Dhabi is fortunate to have the support of the government. This backing and the passion of those involved gives us the ability to engage at a higher level in the arts world, creating strong crosscultural partnerships with renowned international institutions. In less than a decade, Abu Dhabi has become a global hub in the arts world; our arts scene is thriving and will continue to grow at a remarkable pace. What is the focus for this year’s event? International events also provide a valuable forum for cultural exchange and, with over 18 nations represented, the festival is placing renewed emphasis on the role of the arts in building meaningful dialogue across cultures.

How is cultural diversity between different nationalities being bridged through theatre and other forms of artistic expression? My company is very international. In my last play, I had 11 nationalities involved to truly reflect the population of Abu Dhabi. I love bridging cultures because it is so interesting to learn about each other in the trusting and experimental environment of a theatre company. All our shows are shaped by this, in that we work very collaboratively. A stable companion One of the oldest horse breeds in the world, the majestic Arabian is a treasured part of UAE heritage

Noble, distinctive and highly prized, the Arabian horse is an important part of the UAE’s heritage. Famed for their speed and stamina, these horses were a significant part of Bedouin life, living alongside their human masters in much the same way we see the role of camels in desert life. The Arabian is easy to recognise thanks to its distinctive wedgeshaped head, wide forehead and high tail carriage. Arabians also have a small raised area between their eyes (called the jibbah by the Bedouin) which is believed to aid breathing in the arid desert climate. Although many Arabians appear to be white, and are often perceived as such, they are in fact grey. One of the oldest horse breeds in the world – evidence suggests as old as 4,500 years – the Arabian horse naturally originated in this region. The horses lived in close proximity to, and with reliance on, their human owners. But it was not just one-way traffic – the nomadic Bedouin required these horses to protect their way of life.

Myths and legends

Best of breed

Arabian horses have been the subject of many myths and legends down the years. One story from the Bedouin says that Allah created the Arabian from the south wind, with the following words: “I call you Horse; I make you Arabian and I give you the chestnut colour of the ant; I have hung happiness from the forelock which hangs between your eyes; you shall be the Lord of the other animals. Men shall follow you wherever you go; you shall be good for flight as for pursuit; you shall fly without wings; riches shall be on your back and fortune shall come through your meditation.” Another story tells how Muhammad chose his horses through a test of courage and loyalty. After a long journey through the desert, Muhammad let his horses free to race to the oasis. Before they reached the water, Muhammad called them back. Five dutifully responded and became his favourites – Al Khamsa, meaning “the five”.

Arabian horses have spread across the world by trade and warfare to now have their bloodlines in most breeds of horse. Arabians were bred to be war horses and aside from their stamina, their good nature and intelligence were also key factors. Indeed, it is this combination of brains and brawn that has endeared the Arabian to horse owners and breeders around the world. Living and working alongside the Bedouin for centuries in harsh conditions created a resilient breed that was also comfortable with humans. In harsh desert conditions, the horses became accustomed to depending on their human masters for food and water, and sometimes even fed on dates and milk. This ‘domestication’ distilled down generations of Arabians to create a breed that is good natured but that also commands respect.

Enduring appeal Arabian horses have dominated the sport of endurance riding in international events that often cover more than 160 kilometres. Arabians have not just excelled in endurance, but have also competed successfully in showjumping and eventing. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai and UAE Vice President and Prime Minister, is well known in equestrian circles for being the driving force behind the Godolphin stables, which have been successful in horseracing since their formation in 1994. As well as racing horses, Sheikh Mohammed is said to be involved in more than 700 endurance horses. However, Sheikh Mohammed is also an accomplished rider and has excelled in endurance racing around the world, both as an individual and as leader of the UAE national team. Sheikh Mohammedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sons Sheikh Hamdan and Sheikh Rashid have also topped the world ranking in the sport.

Inner-city escape Ride a train, cool off in the splash park or just relax under a tree at Khalifa Park

In a quiet location, fringed by the city, is a park that’s popular with families of all nationalities. It has museums, gardens, an aquarium, a small night carnival, coffee shop and even a splash park for children. Khalifa Park in Al Matar, near Sheikh Khalifa Bridge and the Park Rotana hotel, is a peaceful escape from the city. It is ideal for families or those who just want to stretch their legs. A popular feature within it is Murjan Splash Park, which has small waterslides, tipping buckets, tunnels, a water wheel, water showers and a water umbrella. There is also a 257-metre-long lazy river, which is only 60cm deep, that winds around the park and a station for water balloon battles. The Lily Pad Hop, meanwhile, has four trampolines with harnesses for guests to perfect their jumps and flips.

For those who’d rather stay dry, there is a ‘Time Tunnel’ journey through the museum that documents the history of Abu Dhabi from pearl diving and fishing times to present day, and an aquarium with a number of exotic marine creatures. There is a separate entry fee for the museum and aquarium. There are a few ways to explore Khalifa Park. Take a stroll through the different gardens and explore the hidden corners, or hire a buggy for one, two or four people. The buggies can be hired from as little as AED20 an hour and are a fun way to spend time with family and friends while burning a few calories. There is a kiosk at the entrance where the buggies can be hired. Khalifa Park is home to possibly Abu Dhabi’s only train, which visitors can ride for AED2. The locomotive takes passengers from one end of the park to the other, pointing out areas of interest along the way. The park can be quiet on a weekday, but comes to life in the evenings, especially at weekends, when a small carnival operates with rides, food stalls and markets.

Plane sailing See some of the UAE’s most famous sights on a seaplane flight from Yas Island to Dubai Creek

If you’ve seen the sights of the city, toured Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, swiped your credit card in designer boutiques and photographed sunset in the desert, you may be wondering what to do next. You could ride the world’s fastest rollercoaster at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi or hire a bike and pedal along the Corniche, but why not take a seaplane flight from Yas Island to Dubai for a bird’s-eye view of some of the UAE’s most spectacular sights? The newly launched flight with Seawings takes around 40 minutes and provides spectacular views of iconic landmarks such as Yas Marina Circuit, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the Burj Khalifa, Palm Jumeirah, The World islands and the historic Dubai Creek. It offers some of the best photographic opportunities in the UAE and, best of all, there is no traffic or queuing up.

The Cessna 208 seaplane accommodates eight passengers, or nine if one sits beside the pilot, and each seat is beside the window, offering unobstructed views of the journey. Guests board the plane from a pontoon behind the Yas Yacht Club and once seated the captain gives a short safety briefing. Within minutes the plane is skimming the flat turquoise water behind Yas Marina, speeding towards Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. Once in the air, the view of the island is spectacular and it is clear what a unique destination it is. From here, the scale of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is obvious. In fact, it holds the record for the world’s largest roof at 200,000 square metres and also the world’s largest Ferrari logo, which is 65 metres long and covers 3,000 square metres. What else would you expect from the world’s largest indoor theme park? The world’s fastest rollercoaster, of course, and if you’re lucky you may even see it speeding along its tracks at 240kmh.

Looping around, Yas Marina Circuit comes into view. This is where the Abu Dhabi Formula One Grand Prix is staged each November in front of a crowd of 50,000 spectators and an international television audience of up to 600 million. The 5.55-kilometre track winds around the picturesque Yas Marina and through the futuristic Yas Viceroy hotel. In the distance, a disc-shaped building stands out. Aldar HQ, home of Yas Island developer Aldar, is one of Abu Dhabi’s more unique structures and with Capital Gate (the tower with the world’s steepest incline) and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque it is giving the city’s skyline international acclaim.

From Yas Island, the plane tracks the coastline between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, coursing past Ghantoot and Jebel Ali. Soaring at 2,000 feet (609 metres), the highrise buildings of Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Lakes Towers come into view. They centre around a series of lakes and the world’s largest manmade marina, and border Dubai’s coastline for five kilometres. History on show Dubai is a city of contrasts, something which is quite apparent from above. Flying over villas and lowrise buildings, the plane makes its way to Dubai Creek where dhows (Arabian sailboats) that are docked at the wharfage are being loaded with goods before setting sail for foreign ports. Abras (Arabian water taxis) zigzag the narrow waterway transporting people from Bur Dubai to Deira. The plane descends for a water landing, before docking at the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club. The 40-minute aerial sightseeing is over but there is time to explore the city from the ground before making the journey back by car. For those looking for an exclusive way to see some of the UAE’s most renowned attractions, the Classique Yas Experience is sure to impress.

They are the emblem of the rich and powerful and it is a rare individual who will turn down the chance to own a perfectly polished sparkler. After all, as the nine-times-married Zsa Zsa Gabor once famously said: “I’ve never hated a man enough to give his diamonds back.” Derived from the Greek word ‘adamas’, meaning indestructible, diamonds are formed deep in the earth over millennia and are the hardest and most enduring of all precious stones. The four Cs With so much choice, however, surely one runs the risk of being blinded by the bling? In other words how do you tell a top-quality stone from a dud? Colour, cut, clarity and carat are the internationally recognised criteria by which the value of a diamond is judged. Colour generally refers to the presence (or absence) of colour in white diamonds. A colourless diamond allows more light to pass through than a coloured diamond and therefore emits more sparkle. Only a few rare diamonds can be described as truly colourless. Thus the whiter a diamond’s colour, the more valuable it is. An important exception to this rule is the coloured diamond, which ranges from blue to green to bright yellow, pink or red. These are

some of the rarest and most expensive in the world. “Only one in every 10,000 diamonds possesses natural colour and is referred to as a ‘fancy colour diamond’,” explains Ghada El-Kari, merchandising director at Tiffany & Co. “For this reason, fancy colour diamonds are purchased almost exclusively for the intensity of the diamond’s colour. They are more valuable because of their rarity.” One of the rarest and most precious diamonds in the world is a fancy yellow diamond, which was acquired by Charles Tiffany in 1878. This 12.54-carat, 82-facet yellow diamond is on display in Tiffany & Co.’s flagship store on Fifth Avenue in New York. In neighbouring Dubai there are also some impressive collections. Leading jewellery brand Levant recently unveiled its new breathtaking selection of 13 red diamonds. Ranging in size from 0.46 to 1.16 carats, the entire set is just over 10 carats and was accumulated over an eight-year period.

K N O W YO U R R I G H T S When buying a diamond, always request a certificate from either the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or the American Gem Society (AGS), which are two of the most widely regarded and recognised diamond labs in the world. This official document is proof of the diamond’s exact measurement and weight, as well as the details of its cut and quality. All reputable diamond sellers will have access to the information. If you choose to purchase a diamond without documentation, you are buying the stone based purely on trust, which may not be a good investment.

The cut of a diamond refers to a diamond’s reflective qualities and is what gives the stone its brilliance or reflective sparkle. The angles and finish ultimately determine a diamond’s ability to handle light, which in turn leads to its twinkle. “A well-cut diamond captures the light around it and makes that light perform in breathtaking ways, so it’s important to always pay attention to cut,” says Mumaij Moidu, marketing manager at Levant. “Cut also refers to the overall shape and the way the stone is fashioned – princess, round, marquise, oval and so on.” Clarity is another important factor, as this refers to the unique and identifying flaws, on and within a gem. Most diamonds contain some flaws such as tiny inclusions, or scratches and chips on the surface. “Inclusions are enclosed within the diamond, whereas blemishes are on the surface of a polished diamond,” explains Moidu. “Inclusions normally have more impact on a diamond’s beauty and value than the blemishes and the value of a diamond generally depends on whether these flaws are visible to the naked eye.”

Finally, carat is the unit of measurement used to weigh a diamond: one carat is equal to 200 milligrams (or 0.2 grams). Since large diamonds are rare they have a greater value per carat so the price of a diamond tends to rise with its carat size. “It’s important to note that value is not just numerical,” says Moidu. “While a one-carat diamond weighs the same as four 0.25-carat diamonds the one-carat diamond is worth more because its larger size makes it rarer.”

Miles of styles Armed with this knowledge, a shopping spree in Abu Dhabi’s countless jewellery stores should be much more straightforward, but one thing to notice is the wide variety of styles on offer. Just as with clothes, diamonds have fashionable trends that come and go. In the noughties the tendency was to opt for large white diamonds, while the last few years has seen the emergence of coloured stones, with stars such as Jennifer Lopez and Heidi Klum sporting pink and yellow diamonds respectively. “Customers are now much more selective and exclusivity costs,” explains Moidu. “Recent trends have veered towards the more unusual coloured diamonds. particularly popular, as well as rarer shades, such as blue and red.” There also tends to be a marked difference in the styles of jewellery favoured by different nationalities. For example, diamond jewellery worn by Arabic brides tends to be very ornate whereas European brides tend to opt for more subtle styles. Of course, with all this choice, you may find yourself in a world of indecision, but fear not, because there is a plethora of jewellery experts in the city who are on hand to create individual masterpieces. Hakkasan Cuisine: Chinese One of the first restaurants of high-end international fame to open in the capital, Hakkasan is an ultra-trendy Chinese restaurant from a Michelin-star stable. The restaurant’s design and décor are as much a work of art as the dishes. Dark wood, high ceilings, creative lighting and private dining spaces adequately reflect the modern Chinese cuisine while still capturing the Middle Eastern location. Start the evening at the 20-metre-long bar and enjoy one of the signature cocktails, before moving to the restaurant, which is divided into two sections with private dining areas. Those lucky to be near the kitchen can watch the chefs in action through the atmospheric, aquarium-like blue glass and those sitting on the new terrace will enjoy views of the grounds of Emirates Palace. flavour of arabia With its roots deep in Middle Eastern culture, shisha smoking is a pastime that shouldn’t be missed for those seeking an authentic experience

The sweet smell of shisha smoke wafting through the air of the UAE is a common one, as this sociable pursuit has become part of the rich culture of the Middle East. Groups of men and women or couples will gather to enjoy shisha over a coffee, dinner or just by itself in a relaxing setting. Shisha, derived from the Persian word shishe meaning ‘glass’, is also known as a hookah in East African countries. A shisha pipe consists of a bowl at the top of the pipe, which is packed with flavoured tobacco and covered with a piece of foil. The foil is pierced several times before hot coals are rested on top. The roasted tobacco smoke is drawn through a glass jar of water before being inhaled through a hose. Because of the bubbles created in the water as it is smoked, shisha is also commonly referred to as hubbly bubbly. It costs anywhere between AED35 and AED50 to enjoy shisha with a flavour of your choice. Take your pick from the many traditional and exotic flavours, with favourites such as mint, apple, grape, strawberry and lemon. These tobaccos create a pleasant smell in the air, far removed from the strong smell of cigarettes and cigars. The origins of shisha are disputed, with India, Persia and Turkey all making a claim on the pastime as their own. However, the most ancient traces of shisha smoking have been found in Ethiopia, with the earliest form of shisha equipment being carbon dated to around 1320. The first poem to include reference to shisha smoking originated in Persia and was written in 1535. But it seems shisha smoking started to become prevalent in the mid-1500s court of Mughal Emperor Akbar I in Rajistan,

My family moved to Al Ain many years ago. My dad arrived 36 years ago and my mum came here six years later, so this is where I grew up. Al Ain is a quiet city, which makes it easy to get around. There is no traffic and no humidity, unlike Abu Dhabi and Dubai. In my spare time, I enjoy exercising and practising yoga, but when family and friends come to visit I like to show them what Al Ain has to offer. I recommend visiting Jebel Hafeet to get a great view of Al Ain and the surrounding area. It is one of the highest mountains in the UAE so the view is one of the best. For the young and young at heart, I suggest a day at Hili Fun City. This theme park has been a favourite with families in Al Ain for over 20 years. I was always a fan of the rollercoaster, but there are 28 rides and attractions for people of all ages.

The Al Ain Zoo is also a must for families. There is a range of exhibits for African and Arabian native animals, big cats, birds, nocturnal animals, reptiles and white lions, which is one of the most popular. The zoo is set against a backdrop of Jebel Hafeet and makes a great day out. Those who like a bit of motorsport action should visit Al Ain Raceway where they can try go karting. It is one of the best raceways in the UAE. Visitors can arrive and race each other straight away without having to book. I also suggest a shopping trip to Bawadi Mall, which is one of Al Ain’s biggest malls. It has a good range of shops and all of the top brands. When it comes to nightspots, I like Trader Vic’s at the Al Ain Rotana. It has a good atmosphere, music and food, which makes for an enjoyable evening with friends.

The UAE: A brief history The United Arab Emirates was formed on December 2, 1971, with the union of six emirates – Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ajman.
