A MAN INSPIRED BY HORSE RACING CHANGED WATCHMAKING FOREVER. In 1821, at a horse race in Paris, Nicolas Rieussec successfully tested his revolutionary invention that allowed time to be recorded to an accuracy of a fifth of a second. The chronograph was born. A tribute to a visionary man, the Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Automatic is centred on the essence of his invention, the rotating disc technique. Monopusher chronograph,
self-winding manufacture movement, second

Abu Dhabi is a multicultural society that embraces heritage and tradition, giving the city a nice steady pace, and there is a variety of attractions that cater for all visitors, young and old. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a must see. It encapsulates the very culture and spirit of the Emirates. Travel back in time and experience what Bedouin life was all about, from food to belly dancing. From horse riding to shooting, go karting, dune buggies, archery, paintballing (indoor and out) and a manmade lake where you can experience wakeboarding by a cable system. It’s a great day out for families, groups or just a few people who want to do something more energetic with their day. 16
The Arabian Wildlife Park on Sir Bani Yas Island is home to the world’s largest population of Arabian oryx. The species has been extinct in the wild since the 1960s, but thanks to a breeding programme put in place by the late Sheikh Zayed it has been successfully reintroduced to areas of the Arabian Peninsula and even Jordan. Journey of discovery If there’s one place every visitor must see it’s Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. An impressive structure, it’s one of Abu Dhabi’s most recognisable icons and a proud monument to the country’s late leader
Q The ‘attraction’ most recommended by the city’s concierges and one of the finest structures you’re likely to see, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a defining feature of Abu Dhabi. It’s a proud monument that makes an impressive statement about the city. Sometimes simply known as the Grand Mosque, it gives the title a whole new meaning with a design and attention to detail that can only be described as breathtaking. While Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is simply stunning from the outside, it needs to be seen from the inside to fully appreciate its beauty and to understand its importance to the people of Abu Dhabi. Fortunately, it is one of the few mosques in the UAE open to visitors – part of a plan by the late president, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, to encourage a greater cultural understanding for all nationalities. Best of all, guided tours are given daily by the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the largest in the world. One need only glance at this imposing place of worship to realise that. But while it holds several world records, one category it is a serious contender for is that of the most beautiful mosque in the world. Concierge photographer Adham Sneeh has compiled a collection of his favourite images of this stunning Abu Dhabi icon.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque features 82 white marble domes of Moroccan design. The main dome is almost 32 metres in diameter and stands 85 metres high, making it the largest of its kind. Roughly the size of five football fields, the Grand Mosque can accommodate almost 41,000 worshippers, including more than 7,000 in the main prayer hall and almost 23,000 in the courtyard.
Visitors will find the world’s largest chandelier under the main dome. It is 10 metres in diameter, 15 metres high and weighs more than nine tonnes. It is one of seven gold-plated chandeliers. All were made in Germany and feature thousands of Swarovski crystals from Austria and glasswork from Italy.
Stunningly beautiful with intricate and elaborate designs covering every inch, the main prayer hall features the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet. It was designed by Iranian artist Ali Khaliqi and hand crafted by 1,300 artisans in villages near Mashhad, an area renowned for its carpets.

There are a further 96 columns in the main prayer hall, each inlaid with mother of pearl.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was designed and constructed using artisans and materials from around the world, including China, Germany, Greece, India, Iran, Italy, Morocco, New Zealand, Turkey, the UAE and the UK. It involved more than 3,000 workers and 38 contracting companies.
The mosque’s internal areas are just as impressive as its exterior, with Italian white marble and floral designs featuring mother of pearl, gold glass mosaic and other semi-precious materials.

The main glass door, which leads from the courtyard to the prayer halls, is 12.2 metres high, seven metres wide and weighs approximately 2.2 tonnes. It features a floral design.
Gold glass mosaic lines the mihrab, the semi-circular niche which identifies the qibla wall and the direction of the Holy City of Mecca. Muslims face this wall when praying. The qibla is subtly decorated to avoid distracting worshippers during a prayer. It is 23 metres high and 50 metres wide.

Explore the emirates From rugged mountain ranges and sweeping desert landscapes, to modern cities with towering skyscrapers and mega malls, the UAE is an exciting country with a surprise waiting around every corner
Q Abu Dhabi is the largest of the seven emirates that form the UAE. Dubai, Ajman, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah are the other six. Each has its own unique appeal and, depending on your preference for city life or countryside calm, all are worth a visit. From craggy mountain ranges to archaeological sites, no city, town or village is more than a few hours’ drive from Abu Dhabi.
AL AIN: The oasis city The birthplace of the late Sheikh Zayed, the first president of the UAE, Al Ain is the second major city in the emirate of Abu Dhabi and touches the border with Oman at the enclave of Buraimi. Boasting the region’s largest oasis, Al Ain is the greenest city in the UAE with shrub-filled parks, palmlined highways and colourful flowers in the cooler months. The city is also home to one of the UAE’s highest mountains, Jebel Hafeet (pictured), which is easily accessible via a 14-kilometre highway. The summit offers 360-degree panoramic views over the low-lying city and surrounding desert, and there’s a hotel just below, which is the ideal location for a mountain-top lunch. Al Ain also boasts a profusion of old forts – some restored and some picture-perfect in their ruinous state – as well as a camel market, central souk, very popular zoo and hot springs. Many of the city’s historical sites have been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List to preserve them for generations to come.

DUBAI: City of contrasts

2
With its multicultural population, tower-lined roads and vibrant atmosphere, Dubai has the look and feel of a major metropolis. But peek beneath the glitz and glamour and discover the origins of this Creek-side city. From the historical Bastakiya area on the banks of the Creek, to the popular Heritage & Diving Village with its waterside promenade, there’s more to the city than meets the eye. Visitors will make a beeline for the numerous malls and famed Gold Souk, while intriguing additions to the leisure scene, like the Ski Dubai snow park, The Dubai Mall with its large indoor aquarium and At the Top (the viewing platform on the 124th floor of the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa) attract all ages and nationalities. Dining opportunities abound and cover every imaginable cuisine, and it’s always a pleasure to simply sit and watch the world go by at any one of the local cafés that line the city streets and mall avenues.

FUJAIRAH: East coast adventure 4
Fujairah is renowned for its golden sandy beaches washed by the waters of the Gulf of Oman. An emirate on the verge of development, Fujairah is still a peaceful retreat from hectic city life, fronted by the expanse of ocean with the impressive Hajar mountain range as the backdrop. Fujairah town is a low-rise destination with a mixture of casual restaurants and cosy hotels. Further along the coast are five-star beach resorts, making it a popular weekend spot for city escapees and visiting tourists. The emirate is also a major magnet for scuba diving fans thanks to its numerous coral reefs, which are a haven for marine life on the east coast, including sharks, turtles and rays. There are several historical sites to see, including a 300-year-old fort, the oldest mosque in the UAE at Al Bidayah, and there are still the remains of ancient watchtowers dotted around, which are easily reached by car, bike or on foot. Hot springs and waterfalls are hidden in the mountain scenery and visitors are advised to explore the area only with a licensed tour company or an experienced and well-equipped local contact. The unusual sport of bull butting (where two bulls pit their strength against each other) can still be seen every Friday close to the city centre. And on the trip back be sure to stop off at the Friday Market (open every day) near Masafi for fruit, vegetables and even carpets.

HATTA: Heritage in the hills
5
Hatta is renowned for its landscape and solitude, offering a peaceful alternative to the city. A couple of hours’ drive from Abu Dhabi, it’s a great day trip and has more attractions than first meets the eye. The last stop in the UAE before reaching the border with Oman, a mere 10 kilometres away, Hatta is a point of entry and exit for residents and visitors alike. The town is set in a dramatic location at the foot of the looming Hajar mountain range with a picture postcard opportunity at every turn. One of the major points of interest is the old fort, which dates back to 1790, and the heritage village, which provides an authentic insight into local life before the discovery of oil.

A rugged landscape bordered by lofty mountains and sand-swept desert, Ras Al Khaimah is an action-adventure emirate with an exciting range of activities from the sedentary to the adrenaline fuelled. The emirate has a rich heritage showcased in its historical sites, forts and abandoned villages. Excavations have revealed a history dating back to 5000 BC. A popular place for sun-seekers and weekend getaways, Ras Al Khaimah is home to a number of five-star resorts including the waterfront The Cove Rotana and the indulgent desert resort Banyan Tree Al Wadi, which also has 32 beachside villas for those who prefer a seaside stay. A relatively new attraction is Iceland Water Park with 20 thrilling Arctic-themed rides and attractions.

SHARJAH: City of culture The emirate of Sharjah is a 20-minute drive from the centre of Dubai – traffic permitting. A word of warning though – avoid the Dubai-Sharjah highway during rush hour or you could find yourself on the road for an hour or more. Dedicated shoppers must pencil in a visit to the famous Blue Souk (Central Market), which houses around 600 shops in two wings. Its distinctive architectural style with Islamic influence is a major city landmark. Traditional purchases from the souk include brass coffee pots, oriental carpets, hand-carved furniture and a wealth of trinkets and treasures from the near east to the subcontinent. Another retail attraction is the wonderful Souk Al Arsah in the heart of the restored museum district. One of the emirate’s oldest souks, it was renovated in traditional style incorporating shells, coral, wood and palm leaves. Items on sale include silver jewellery, coffee pots, wooden chests, spices and perfume. The city’s cultural arts and entertainment hub is Al Qasba. Its waterfront setting is reminiscent of Venetian waterways and there is an excellent choice of local stores selling everything from gifts to clothes, restaurants, theatre shows and its pièce de résistance, the Eye of the Emirates big wheel. In 1998, UNESCO named Sharjah – whose name means ‘rising sun’ – the cultural capital of the Arab world in recognition of its commitment to art, culture and heritage preservation. There are a number of fascinating museums, including archaeology, coins, natural history, science, Islam and heritage.

Visit an oasis filled with palm trees on the edge of the Empty Quarter to gain a real appreciation of the natural beauty of the Middle East. The famed Liwa Oasis is located in the south of Abu Dhabi emirate and can be reached by car. The verdant oases are in stark contrast to the Empty Quarter or the Rub Al Khali – the subject of explorers’ memoirs and coffee table books – which is the biggest sand desert in the world with towering dunes, some up to 300 metres high. While in the region, stop for a bite to eat, or the night, at the Arabianthemed Tilal Liwa Hotel in Madinat Zayed or the luxurious Al Qasr Desert Resort by Anantara nestled among the towering desert dunes.

UMM AL QUWAIN: Tiny treasure
10
Escape to the tiny emirate of Umm Al Quwain and discover the perfect place to cool off. Located less than 30 minutes from Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain is a tranquil destination as yet unaffected by the hurried pace of its city neighbours. The major draw of the area is Dreamland Aqua Park, a family friendly waterpark with more than 30 rides spread over 250,000 square metres of landscaped gardens. If you’re attracted to high altitudes, you can also try paragliding or skydiving at the local flying club. And for history buffs, the Umm Al Quwain Museum in the old ruler’s fort is worth a visit.

Abu Dhabi after dark As Abu Dhabi continues to gain momentum as one of the world’s hottest business and leisure hubs, Concierge highlights what there is to do once the sun goes down…

From fine dining and the arts, to fun-filled adventure and historic tours, Abu Dhabi is no less impressive a destination as day turns to night. If anything, this is when the city comes to life. The magical sound of the sundown call to prayer draws worshippers to mosques across the emirate while the ever-growing expat white collar workforce leave their desks behind for a night in one of the city’s many five-star restaurants or bars. But eating out isn’t where it ends. There is much more to the evening hours in Abu Dhabi than the inside of the city’s impressive array of hotels. A tour of the emirate’s fabulous Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a must for anyone keen to learn more about Islam and admire the jaw-dropping architecture while for those yearning for history, Heritage Village has it all. Sports fans and families in search of entertainment for lively children should take a trip to Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. The fastest rollercoaster ever created is just the tip of the iceberg. More sedate sports lovers are equally catered for after the sun sets. An evening round of golf is the perfect way to work up an appetite before a traditional dhow dinner cruise along the Corniche. Throw in a spot of shopping at the malls and souks and your trip to Abu Dhabi is complete.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque If a busy day has left you in need of spiritual enlightenment, an evening tour around Abu Dhabi’s magnificent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque will soothe your soul. The mosque is open until 10pm every night and there is no fee for visitors. Guided tours are also available on Friday and Saturday nights at 8pm and are a great way to learn about Islam, the mosque and its importance to the people of Abu Dhabi. The evenings are an ideal time to visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque as the strategic lighting is simply stunning, so don’t forget your camera. If there are a few of you going, it’s wise to book ahead to make sure that one of the guides can accommodate you. Also, be aware that this is a place of worship and you must dress and behave accordingly. Call 02 4416444, email tour@szgmc. ae or see www.szgmc.ae for more information.
A look behind the scenes at the re-created souk and Bedouin encampment, complete with camels and goat-hair tents, provides a fascinating insight into the Abu Dhabi of the past Heritage Village For those in search of history and a story to tell about the origins of Abu Dhabi, an evening visit to Heritage Village is a must. The gardens alone are worth the trip but a look behind the scenes at the re-created souk and Bedouin encampment, complete with camels and goat-hair tents, provides a fascinating insight into the Abu Dhabi of the past. It’s also possible to watch craftsmen at work weaving on traditional looms, blowing glass, beating brass and making pots. It’s a far cry from the slick city Abu Dhabi has become. If you’re lucky, the craftsmen will share their skills and may even offer the chance to try them out. There’s also a little spice shop where you can buy herbs and handmade soap for gifts. Call 02 6814455 for more information. Open every evening from 5 to 9pm.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi If you like your evening entertainment to include a bit of adventure head out of town to Yas Island for a night at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. The world’s largest indoor theme park is open until 8pm from Tuesday to Sunday and includes everything from the 240kmh rollercoaster (the fastest in the world) to children’s favourites like the Junior GT, a driving school which allows them to motor along mini roads of their own. History buffs can also look back in time at the origins of the Ferrari brand or find out more
about its Italian homeland. There are also plenty of shopping options for visitors less interested in car-based pursuits and numerous cafés to stop for dinner or a drink. Ticket prices are based on height. Children under one metre can enter for free on general entry tickets while general tickets for visitors under 1.5 metres are AED165. Those above 1.5 metres will pay AED225. Premium tickets cost AED265 for visitors under 1.5 metres and AED325 for 1.5 metres and above. Dhow dinner cruise If you’re looking for a romantic way to spend an evening, while still soaking up the local culture, the Al Dhafra Dhow cruise is the ideal solution. The traditional dhow cruises along the Corniche between 9 and 11pm while guests enjoy a traditional set menu of mixed seafood, meats and salads as well as drinks and desserts, served with a generous helping of warm Arabian hospitality. Local staff can also help identify historic landmarks along the way. The set menu for the dinner cruise costs AED225 or half price for children. It’s advisable to book before 5pm on the day to secure your table as it’s a popular activity. Call 02 6732266 or 02 6732288 for more information.

Night golf A round of night golf is a great way to enjoy the evening and work up an appetite for dinner. Two courses in Abu Dhabi provide evening tee off. Abu Dhabi Golf Club offers visitors nine-holes on its award-winning 27-hole course, which plays host to the annual Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. For AED275 with a convenient last tee time of 9pm, golfers can play on the same course as greats such as Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood. Bookings can be made up to 12 days in advance. Malls and souks You will have heard about, or maybe experienced, the joys of shopping in Dubai but an evening of retail therapy in Abu Dhabi can be a far more organic experience. The city’s infrastructure makes it possible to walk between shops, in particular the traditional souks on Mina Road, which open in the evening from 7pm until midnight. The same goes for the Gold Souk on 4th Street. More traditional mall lovers in search of well-known designer brands are equally well catered for on a night out in Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi Mall (02 6454858, www.abudhabimall.com) houses over 200 shops and is open until 11pm every night while Marina Mall (02 6818300), the largest in the city, is the perfect place for an evening shopping spree. If you fancy something traditional, with modern amenities and dining options nearby, try The Souk at Qaryat Al Beri (02 5581670, www.soukqaryatalberi.com), Abu Dhabi’s modern take on traditional Arabian shopping. You can even grab a water taxi to whisk you off on a tour if you want to take the weight off your feet.

A world of underwater treasureS Discover colourful fish and coral, interesting wrecks and unusual marine life while scuba diving in the warm waters of the UAE
Q Wo r d s b y Z o e R aw l i n s
Teeming with exotic fish and multi-coloured coral gardens, not to mention over one-third of the world’s species of whales and dolphins, the UAE is a scuba diver’s paradise. Unlike other countries where most dive sites are seasonal, the waters here can be explored all year round thanks to temperatures ranging from a mild 22ºC in winter to a bath-like 30ºC in the height of summer. And as luck would have it, April is one of the prime months to delve into the deep as the fish are breeding, so there’s an abundance of aquatic life to explore. Diving in the UAE is split into two distinct geographical locations: the East Coast, which includes the emirate of Fujairah (a world-renowned diving hub); and the West Coast, comprising Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The East Coast is generally considered to offer the best and most consistent year-round diving with rainbowhued corals, tropical fish, good visibility and thrilling underwater cave rock formations. The West Coast meanwhile is home to some fascinating wreck dives for the more experienced diver, not to mention the chance to see unusual marine life such as Abu Dhabi’s population of highly endangered dugongs. Whether you’re a seasoned diver seeking new adventures or a landlubber who needs some gentle persuasion to dip a toe in, the UAE offers a wealth of underwater marvels. Here, local diving experts reveal their favourite dive sites in and around the region, so get ready to take the plunge and explore a fascinating new world…

Dibba Rock Fujairah, East Coast
2
The waters around Fujairah offer exhilarating diving for all levels. According to Marian Moore, owner of Freestyle Divers, one of the best sites is Dibba Rock. “This is a stunning coral reef covered in hard corals where you can see black-tip reef sharks, turtles, tropical fish (such as angel and parrot fish), seahorses, lobster, barracuda, jack fish, devil rays and even stingrays,” she says. Experience level: Maximum depth is 14 metres so it’s suitable for all levels of divers (and snorkellers – some of the best things can be seen at just five metres’ depth). Distance from Abu Dhabi city: Approximately 3.5 hours by road. What makes the site worth the trip: Clear waters and the incredible variety of marine life. While you’re there, why not dive at: Martini Rock, a nearby popular dive site that’s teeming with coral and reef fish, or Car Cemetery, an underwater gem of sunken cars, trucks and buses.

Jassim Abu Dhabi, West Coast
Jumeira Beach Dubai, West Coast
With approximately 300 kilometres of coastline, the UAE’s capital offers an abundance of diving opportunities. “Abu Dhabi is a hidden gem for diving, as there are plenty of hard corals, fish and wrecks,” reveals Kathleen Russell, PADI course director at Al Mahara Diving Center. One of the emirate’s top dive sites is Jassim. “This is an interesting wreck broken into three sections lying on its side,” she continues. “Expect to see large schools of barracuda as well as stingrays.” Experience level: Advanced and upwards. Distance from Abu Dhabi city: Approximately 1.5 hours by boat. What makes the site worth the trip: The challenge of navigating a wreck, plus it’s a convenient dive if you’re staying in Abu Dhabi. While you’re there, why not dive at: Saadiyat Reef, 45 minutes by boat from the coast of Saadiyat Island. Look out for hard corals, angelfish, nudibranches and hammour.
“Beach dives are good fun due to their simplicity and with the right conditions they can be fantastic for both day and night dives,” explains Tom Crabbe, a divemaster from Al Boom Diving. “Strolling down to the beach wearing your dive gear and then floating during the briefing, followed by a calm and relaxed dive helps those who are starting to learn,” he adds. Experience level: Perfect for beginners. Distance from Abu Dhabi city: Approximately 1.5 hours’ drive. What makes the site worth the trip: The ease of doing a beach dive in calm and shallow waters (as opposed to a traditional boat dive, where you begin by jumping from the boat). While you’re there, why not dive at: The aeroplane. A relatively new site, a large aeroplane was deliberately sunk in waters close to Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah. It’s one for the more experienced and intrepid divers.

Lima Rock Musandam, East Coast The Musandam peninsula offers thrill-aminute diving thanks to fjords that squeeze water through narrow passages formed by the Hajar Mountains. Coral-encrusted drop-offs plunge to great depths while swift currents attract some of the world’s largest ocean dwellers. “Lima Rock in Musandam is a coral reef with an abundance of fish. The depth varies from 30 to 40 metres, but best of all there’s a good chance of seeing whale sharks,” reveals Moore from Freestyle Divers. Experience level: Advanced and upwards. Distance from Abu Dhabi city: Approximately 3.5 hours’ drive. What makes the site worth the trip: April is one of the best months to spot whale sharks. While you’re there: Discover remote dive sites on a dhow cruise (day trip or overnight) and enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Hajar Mountains. It is perfect for adventurous scuba divers and snorkellers. Don’t forget: The Musandam is part of Oman so you’ll need to bring your passport to show at the border crossing.
Dubai Aquarium Think you’ve got what it takes to swim in a glass tank with some of the world’s most feared underwater predators? Then book a shark dive at the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo in The Dubai Mall, where you’ll get close to over 70 different marine species, including 400 sharks. “It gives visitors the chance to have a perfect-visibility dive at any point in the year and allows them to see a wealth of marine life in one place,” explains Tom Crabbe from Al Boom. For the less intrepid, there’s the tamer option of cage snorkelling in the aquarium’s 10 million-litre tank. You’ll still be in close proximity to 33,000 aquatic creatures including tropical fish, eels, rays (and the sharks), but you only need to wear snorkelling gear rather than donning full scuba equipment. Cage snorkelling at the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo is for those aged seven and above. It costs AED225 per person and runs daily every 30 minutes from 12 to 3.30pm, then 4.30 to 8pm. Shark diving is for those aged 10 and above. The cost for a certified diver is AED625 with

daily timings at 1, 3, 5 and 7pm (bring your diving qualification). The cost for a non-certified diver is AED825 with daily timings at 3, 5 and 7pm. New kids on the block From stunning beachfront locations and sky-high positions to exotic cuisines and innovative menus, Abu Dhabi’s latest restaurant openings are boosting the city’s culinary credentials
Q Words by Amanda Tomlinson
There’s nothing quite like a swathe of new restaurants to whip up a feeding frenzy in Abu Dhabi. Dining out is a popular pastime in the emirate and residents of all nationalities are quick to try the latest and greatest offering on the city’s culinary scene. The past few months have not only introduced new restaurants to the city, they have risen the bar even further with their creative cuisines and unrivalled locations. One of the most prominent new additions has been that of Amador Restaurant & Cellar at the Park Rotana. The menu, which is described as avant-garde cuisine, features unique combinations and interesting techniques and is overseen by Juan Amador, who has three Michelin stars. Spectacular views are the main drawcards for 18° (pictured) at the Hyatt Capital Gate and Quest at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers. Quest is perched high above the city on the 63rd floor and serves excellent pan-Asian cuisine, while 18° has one of the city’s most unique locations in a world record-breaking building. If these restaurants have some of the best views, then the Park Bar & Grill and 55&5th, The Grill definitely have the most exclusive location, the stunningly beautiful Saadiyat Beach. And lastly, Agadir at The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa is one of the city’s only Moroccan restaurants and offers an authentic experience for those looking for a taste of the Maghreb. The city is poised for even more new restaurants in the coming months as hotels by luxury groups such as Sofitel, Anantara and St. Regis get set to launch.

18° Boasting some of the best views of Abu Dhabi, 18˚ sits proudly in one of the city’s most unique buildings, Capital Gate. It takes its name from the angle of the tower’s lean – 18 degrees – and is positioned on the floor where the structure starts to tilt. In fact, with this 18-degree slant, Capital Gate leans four times more than Italy’s Leaning Tower of Pisa, giving it a world record. The cuisine served here is described as eastern Mediterranean, covering the best of Italian, Turkish, Syrian, Lebanese and Greek. Italian chef Ivan Musoni says the style of eating is also typically eastern Mediterranean, with guests encouraged to order a few dishes for the table and share. “We want our guests to be able to experience a little bit of everything, especially because our menu focuses on five different regions. We want to take them on a journey across all countries,” chef Musoni says. With delicious meals, friendly service and unrivalled views, a meal at 18° is sure to impress. Park Bar & Grill The warm, welcoming setting of the Park Bar & Grill is enhanced by the friendly and attentive service, not to mention the comforting food. With a focus on seafood and steak, served with an Asian touch, the menu is as extensive as it is enticing. Make a selection from the large seafood display, which features fresh fish and shellfish, and have the chefs prepare it to your liking, or go for something tried and tested such as tender, juicy and flavoursome Australian wagyu beef. For a more exotic f lavour, the slow-cooked Asian-style beef short ribs with choi sum and tamarind sauce is sure to impress. The open kitchen dominates from its central position, giving diners the opportunity to watch the chefs in action preparing the meals. The dining areas, which are positioned around the central kitchen, are intimate with dim lighting, while the red feature light at one end is a stand-out design element. Those who arrive early should enjoy an aperitif on the rooftop of Beach House, which offers stunning views of the white-sand Saadiyat Beach, while the upstairs bar at The Park Bar & Grill is the ideal place to cap off the evening. Quest There is more to this 63rd-floor restaurant than stunning views, although the views of the city, Corniche and Arabian Gulf are definitely a huge draw. The biggest surprise is the food. A quick glance at the menu may lead diners to conclude that the dishes are simple Asian fare, but nothing is as it seems. Whether it’s foie gras with popping candy or a dessert that looks like coconut, but is actually frozen melon with tapioca pearls, every dish comes with a surprise. The raspberry chocolate cake arrives buried under a raspberry foam and is laced with popping candy. A salad is disguised as a plant. Every bite is bursting with flavour. The culinary team, headed by Singaporean chef Benjamin Whatt, are so eager to please that they can be spotted observing diners through the kitchen window to make sure they are enjoying the meal. With excellent food and an unbeatable location, Quest is a must for any visitor looking to sample the best Abu Dhabi has to offer. Amador Restaurant & Cellar February’s opening of Amador Restaurant & Cellar elevated dining in Abu Dhabi to a whole new level. Overseen by three-star Michelin chef Juan Amador, a German of Spanish origins, this new hotspot has attracted a lot of attention, not least because of the unique food combinations and preparation techniques. The restaurant is split into two sections – a tapas cellar for casual dining and drinks, and the main restaurant for a more complete dining experience. In the tapas bar, guests will be surprised by the interesting and unusual food combinations and techniques. Try the incredibly tasty mieral pigeon with purple curry, or the Gin Tonic Nitro, a gin and tonic foam stirred in liquid nitrogen to create a frozen texture on the outside with a soft centre. Amador selected this palate cleanser because Spain is the world’s largest consumer of gin. It is made with his favourite premium brand, Gin Mare. The desserts are equally unique, with combinations of white chocolate and truffle, or a bite-sized wasabi-flavoured white chocolate wrapped in thin beetroot candy. As well as à la carte options, a seven-course degustation menu is served in the main restaurant. It gives diners the chance to really discover the avant-garde cuisine and can be enjoyed with wine pairings. A word of warning though – go with an open mind and willing palate. This isn’t a restaurant for those with bland tastes. As Amador says: “My food should stay in people’s minds.” Where: Park Rotana When: Tapas cellar 4pm to 2.30am, restaurant 7 to 11.30pm Contact: 02 6573333

Agadir
A l s o t ry Silk & Spice 02 8127777
Opening this month at the Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche, Silk & Spice offers Thai cuisine in traditional setting with views of the Corniche.
Guests who dine at Agadir know they’re in for the real deal as every staff member, including chef Hakim Benadi, is from Morocco. The menu, inspired by the mystery and allure of the Arabian Nights, blends Arabic and Mediterranean cooking styles, creating meals that evoke the flavours and fragrances of the Maghreb. Sample the spectrum of Moroccan cuisine from fresh breads and traditional tagines, to chargrilled meats and couscous. A range of vegetarian dishes is also available. The restaurant embodies the essence of Morocco with flickering lanterns and distinctive décor to give an intimate ambience. In the cooler months, guests can dine on the terrace and enjoy an extensive selection of shisha overlooking the greens and fairways of the Abu Dhabi Golf Club. my LIFE IN ABU DHABI

Dr Margit Muller, director of the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital, reflects on her 11 years in the capital
1 Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital 2 Emirates Palace
1
I moved to Abu Dhabi in 2001 when I was offered the position of director of the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital (ADFH). It was a journey to a great adventure, as I wasn’t sure how the work would turn out. Looking back, I am happy to say that it was the best decision of my life and I am very grateful as my work at the ADFH is something I could not do anywhere else in the world. When I joined the ADFH it was a small hospital, but over the years we have worked tirelessly and with great dedication and passion to make it the leading centre for falcon medicine in the world. I am proud to say that the ADFH is now the largest falcon hospital in existence. Moreover, it has become one of the main tourist attractions in the emirate. What I like about Abu Dhabi is the great friendliness and hospitality of the city and its people. It is such an
interesting and vibrant place that still preserves its traditions despite the modern multicultural lifestyle. With the wide variety of cultures and traditions, it is a wonderful place to grow not only professionally, but also to enhance and widen my own horizon and to become a truly international person. Moreover, it is a very safe place where everybody can feel at ease, while the sunshine, desert and sea make you feel happy every day. For visitors looking to experience Emirati tradition, I highly recommend the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital. Our tours provide a funny, exciting and unique look at the fascinating world of falcons. Another wonderful highlight is the beautiful and impressive Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Emirates Palace is also a must-see as it is simply stunning. A combination of these three places makes the perfect day for visitors in Abu Dhabi.

The UAE: A brief history The United Arab Emirates was formed on December 2, 1971, with the union of six emirates – Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ajman. Ras Al Khaimah joined the following year. The leaders of these emirates joined forces after the British announced they would withdraw from a protectionist treaty, which had been in place since 1892. Under the treaty, the sheikhs of the Trucial States agreed not to enter into any relationship with foreign governments or dispose of any of their territories except to Great Britain. In return, the United Kingdom offered protection in the event of attack by land or sea. The UAE has had a remarkable history in its 40 years. Once a country reliant on fishing, pearling and trade for its livelihood, it has used its considerable oil reserves to become one of the wealthiest countries in the world (based on GDP per capita income). While it is known for its modern buildings, worldclass sporting events and mega malls, the UAE is also a country rich in history and culture, all of which can be discovered during a visit.

Local flavour While Arabic food is prevalent across Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, traditional Emirati food is harder to come by. It relies on meat, fish and rice as basic staples, enhanced by spices and other flavourings. Although Emirati dishes enjoyed by families, such as harees, thareed and regaag, are rarely encountered, visitors can experience authentic Emirati cuisine at Mezlai restaurant at Emirates Palace. The only fivestar Emirati restaurant in Abu Dhabi, it serves family-style dishes as well as those normally only eaten during special celebrations. Try chef Ali Salim Ebdowa’s signature dish lamb medfoun.
