Trade is at the heart of Middle-Eastern culture, so it is easy to understand how Dubai has become world-famous for its eclectic shopping scene. From independent boutiques to sprawling malls, there’s little you can’t find in the city’s shopping destinations. For a truly authentic retail experience we suggest you direct your attention to the iconic souks which line the Dubai Creek. From silks to spices, the possibilities of this quaint district are endless, but the pièce de résistance is the Gold Souk. Bursting with old-world charm and offering a unique retail experience, shoppers can browse a veritable treasure trove of riches. For more information about this historically rich area, turn to page 46. In addition to the emirate’s vibrant shopping scene, the city is also bracing itself for The Bride Show Dubai, which is the largest bridal and fashion exhibition in the Middle East. Gearing up to celebrate its 15th anniversary, more than 350 exhibitors and over 16,000 visitors will be making their way to the Dubai World Trade Centre from April 4 to 7 to view what’s on offer. Of course, not everyone comes to these shores to shop, which is why we invite you to view our upfront Essentials section, detailing the premier events this month and vital visitor experiences. Additionally, you’ll find an array of informative features within our Shop, Discover, Experience and Taste sections, which offer an invaluable insight into the Middle East’s most cosmopolitan destination. For listings on everything from gourmet restaurants to high-octane activities to try, turn to The Guide. With all the latest up-to-date information at your fingertips you’ll have everything you need to create the perfect fun-filled itinerary for your stay. Further information can also be found at www.conciergedubai.com or by consulting your hotel concierge. Enjoy your Dubai experience fully with Concierge.

Patrick wears: Shirt Marc by Marc Jacobs; trousers Kenzo; blazer Hackett; watch Montblanc Surrounded by undulating dunes, Dubai is a truly exotic desert destination. But while the emirate originally sprang from the sandbanks of the Arabian Desert, it is a city of contrasting landscapes. From the urban enchantment of skyscrapers to the city’s verdant parklands, no one area is alike. For our fashion shoot (page 30) we visited the gardens of Desert Palm Dubai and found a tranquil world of palatial landscapes and colourful countryside.

Unlike the calm culinary experience it is elsewhere around the world, brunch in Dubai is legendary. With buffet tables laden with gourmet goods and an unending supply of drinks, you won’t be left wanting. Our favourites spots include Farriers at The Meydan, which overlooks the world-famous Meydan Racecourse, and Imperium at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray (pictured). Dubai is a shopping city and many visitors come for the retail experience. Fashion Avenue in The Dubai Mall is a favourite with guests. The Fashion Dome at Mall of the Emirates is also a great place to shop and BurJuman is a one-stop shop for designer labels. Guests often ask where they should head for fantastic views and there are a few places I always recommend. For views of ‘new Dubai’ I suggest At.Mosphere which is located on the 122nd floor of the Burj Khalifa in Downtown Dubai. As well as being a stylish bar and restaurant, its views are sensational. For views of the older part of the city, you can’t beat Al-Dawaar restaurant at the Hyatt Regency Dubai. Dubai comes alive at night and we have recently seen a surge in international nightclubs opening on our shores. From Movida to Mahiki and Embassy, we have it all. While Dubai is known for its modern marvels, there is also the old side of the city, which is definitely worth a look. I recommend that guests take the time to visit the Bastakiya, which is Dubai’s old quarter and home to a variety of historical landmarks, such as Dubai Museum, which is open from 8.30am to 8.30pm Saturday to Thursday and 2.30 to 8.30pm on Fridays. The Jumeirah Mosque tour is also a must for those who would like to learn about Islam. Tours are available on Saturdays, Sundays, Tuesday and Thursdays for one hour from 10am.

EXPERIENCE Stable tour

If you missed the opportunity to see the prize thoroughbreds racing in the Dubai World Cup, there is still an opportunity to indulge in some equestrian action. Enjoy a delicious trackside breakfast at The Meydan Racecourse before embarking on a tour which includes a visit to the saddling paddock as well as a look inside the Jockeys’ Lounge and the Horse Connection Lounge. Held every Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday, this tour allows you to retrace the steps of racing champions, as well as giving you a sneaky peak at the trainers as they put the horses through their paces. Contact: stabletours@meydanhotels.com

Discover Bastakiya

Bastakiya is a cultural melting pot and your chance to see a more traditional side of the city. Abundant with galleries, souks and with views of the Creek, this bustling area is the city’s oldest and most charming quarter. To learn more about the amazing past of this historical spot turn to page 62.

EXPERIENCE A day of spa pampering

Travelling often leaves you feeling washed out and weary, so recharge your batteries at one of Dubai’s worldclass spas. Whether you’re keen on massages, facials, scrubs or wraps, with an array of five-star retreats you can take your pick . Our top recommendations include Assawan Spa & Health Club at the Burj Al Arab (pictured), Mandara Spa at The Monarch Dubai and Talise Ottoman Spa at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray. Turn to page 110 for a list of hotels, most with in-house spas.

Old spice As the saying goes, ‘variety is the spice of life’, so if the ultra-modern side of Dubai is all you know, step back in time and taste the old side of the city at the Spice Souk. Located in Deira, next to Dubai Museum and within walking distance of the abra station on Dubai Creek, the marketplace is overflowing with herbs, perfumed oils, rugs and souvenirs. The narrow lanes are predominantly lined with colourful and aromatic spices including frankincense, cumin, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon and aniseed. Valuable saffron is also available and anyone prepared to barter hard can walk away with a real bargain. Operating seven days a week, the souk is at its liveliest during the evenings when an abundance of locals and visitors descend on the area to browse this fascinating and traditional bazaar. 26

the time travellers Last month watch aficionados from around the world united for the annual Baselworld event in Switzerland. Concierge shines a light on the hottest new watches making their way to Dubai

Q The scenic city of Basel was brought to life last month as the world’s most prestigious watch and jewellery fair, Baselworld, got under way. A vibrant centre of knowledge and exchange for watch enthusiasts and industry experts, the trade show was attended by the crème de la crème of the horology community along with 1,815 exhibitors showcasing all the latest developments from the world of watch making. Baselworld is always a roaring success and this year was no exception with over 100,000 people from 100 countries descending on the Swiss metropolis for the exhibition. The attraction? Simply put, no other event offers such a comprehensive overview of watch trends and innovations. During the eight-day extravaganza, eminent watch brands from 41 countries united to showcase their exceptional products and an international buzz was felt throughout the six halls of Baselworld Palace exhibition centre. Concierge jetted to Basel to report on some of the best new launches.

Best of Basel Perpetual calendar watches, which automatically track and display the day, date and month are currently among the most popular complications on the market. As you might expect, right at the forefront of that development is Patek Philippe. Reinforcing its reputation as one of the most prestigious brands in the world, the Swiss manufacturer unveiled the Reference 5204, which is a newly designed split-second chronograph. The innovative new watch is based on the company’s previous chronograph, with the only difference being that this impressive new model has a mechanism for split-seconds and works with the aid of an innovative split-seconds isolator. Despite the minimal modification, the new edition was rumoured to be one to watch at this year’s event. On that note, Rolex fans will be pleased to hear that the ‘Big R’ proved it is still at the top of its game with an assortment of innovative pieces, including the Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller. Built with an annual calendar that operates in two time zones the Sky-Dweller is the timekeeper of choice for international travellers. Having caved to the

3

big-watch zeitgeist, this model measures in at 42mm but packs quite a punch stylewise as it is available in white, yellow and everose gold. Other showstoppers included a legendary model that has enjoyed unequalled recognition since its launch in 1963 – the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona. Offering even more of the enchantment for which it is renowned, this 18-carat yellowgold bracelet is decorated with an array of sapphires in rainbow colours.

Another highlight came in the form of the L-evolution Chronograph Flyback à Rattrapante from Blancpain. This new addition to the collection has a power reserve of 40 hours and combines carbon-fibre and cutting-edge technology which ref lects Blancpain’s strong commitment to GT racing. It is also equipped with a column wheel that guarantees precise pusher control, as well as a vertical coupling-clutch that avoids any unwanted jerking of the hand when the chronograph is activated. Nostalgia was the name of the game for Omega which showcased signature pieces like the Seamaster Planet Ocean. A new addition to the Seamaster Planet Ocean collection was the Ceragold, which is distinguished by a ceramic bezel and 18-carat red gold hands. Another bright star of Baselworld 2012 was the Omega Spacemaster Z-33. Inspired by space travel, this quartz-movement marvel is manufactured from grade-five titanium and features brushed, polished and sandblasted highlights. Omega wasn’t the only leading light because French fashion brand Hermès also dazzled with a selection of creative masterpieces. Famed for unveiling unique pieces (who could forget the ingenious Time

Suspended watch, which won the coveted ‘Best Men’s Watch Prize’ at the Geneva Watch Grand Prix in 2011?) the latest triumph to spring from the house of Hermès is the Calibre H1837. The timepiece has a unique movement crafted by Vaucher Movement Manufacture exclusively for Hermès, which features an oscillating weight adorned with the Hermès H logo decoration. Beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, the calibre offers 50 hours of power reserve. Another French manufacturer to win plaudits at Baselworld was Breguet, which maintained its 211-year commitment to craftsmanship when it offered the Classique Chronometrie 7727. Crafted from soft rose gold, the timepiece comprises the manufacturer’s latest innovations and like its predecessor, the Type XXII chronograph, it oscillates at a frequency of 10Hz. This is the first time that such a high frequency has been applied in a non-chronograph and the purpose is to improve the watch’s precision. Historic Russian brand Fabergé, which is new to the region, stole the show with the Agathon Regulateur Rose Gold and Hazel Enamel. One of a limited edition of 25, this intricately designed timepiece is perfect for collectors. Showcasing traditional watchmaking skills through a skeletonised guilloché engraved movement, which is visible under sapphire glass, the silver guilloché dial is inserted with a white gold motion work plate, embellished with guilloché and white enamel. With a 38-hour power reserve, this exquisite watch is finished off with a stylish alligator strap.

to the emirate. “Dubai is well known for being a business and leisure tourism platform,” says Luc Perramond, CEO of La Montre Hermés. “As far as watch retail is concerned, the potential in the UAE is significant and from 2009 to 2011 there was a substantial increase, with a growth of 56 percent Swiss watch exports to the UAE.” Added to this, the emirate attracted more than 9.3 million visitors in 2011 and approximately three quarters of those stated shopping as one of their main activities. With Dubai’s standing as a prime market for luxury watches, and a wide variety of landmark shopping malls peppering the city, connoisseurs need only look to the shelves of Dubai’s finest boutiques to discover the new innovations in timekeeping. The latest and greatest designs are currently hitting the stores making it the perfect time to update your timepiece.

Trail of gold From the mystical charms of the Gold Souk to hi-tech vending machines which dispense gold bullion, when you visit Dubai, the precious metal is literally at your fingertips

Q Dubai has long been synonymous with gold. The largest gold trading centre in the Middle East, the story began over a century ago when the emirate opened a modest marketplace by Dubai Creek. At the water’s edge a small cluster of retailers, keen to capitalise on the city’s tax-free trade, gathered to sell an array of wares and due to the emirate’s close proximity to India, the bazaar boomed as travellers on their way to the land of spice stopped to purchase treasures. Following these humble beginnings, the souk grew to become one of the largest in the world. The first expansion took place in the 1940s when wooden coverings, which are still present today, were installed to provide shelter to the vendors from the summer sun and winter rain. In the 1960s the watercourse was widened to allow for the increase in international trade and in the 1970s, when the discovery of oil prompted an economic boom in the emirate, the souk saw another swift increase in commercial activity as visitors from around the world began to turn their attentions towards the burgeoning city. Well known as a destination for tourists with a fancy for finery (at a snip of the price), it was around this time that Dubai picked up the moniker, the ‘City of Gold’ and it has borne the name ever since. Today, the souk has been modernised. But despite the expansion, it is still a tantalising introduction to the Arabian world. While the haphazard shacks and oil lamps of yesteryear have been replaced by shiny shop faces and neon lights, the narrow alleys and traditional wooden archways are still bursting with a quaint charm, lending a cultural touch to the gold shopping experience.

A trip to Dubai’s Gold Souk is a rite of passage for all visitors and tourists come from around the world to shop for tax-free trinkets. But while most travellers share an interest in gold shopping – after all, no holiday to this city is complete without a precious purchase – different nationalities search for different styles of jewellery. They also have different standards for the carat value of gold. According to figures set by the World Gold Council, 24 carats is pure gold and must be at least 99 percent gold to be defined as such. On the Indian subcontinent, 22 carats is the standard caratage. In Arab countries it is 21, in the US it is 14 and in the UK, nine. The international standard is 18. In terms of tastes, western preferences tend to be fashion orientated and influenced heavily by current trends. For example, if Angelina Jolie is sporting a name necklace or a charm bracelet, it’s likely that Dubai’s bespoke jewellers will be inundated with requests from western travellers

seeking the same. Similarly, westerners lean towards simpler pieces. “Western customers usually wear 18-carat gold jewellery,” explains Raj Sahai, director of retail for Damas. “They also seem to like the jewellery to be small to medium sized and not too ostentatious.” Conversely, Indian shoppers are more inclined to snap up flamboyant styles, which are decorated with intricate designs, says Sahai. “Customers from India often purchase jewellery for cultural and religious occasions and this is why there is more of a traditional influence in the designs. They often opt for red and green stones and prefer the jewellery to be set in 22-carat yellow gold.” Similarly Arabic shoppers also err on the side of glitz, seeking out bright colours and elaborate designs when they are shopping for new pieces. “During weddings, Arab brides like to wear heavy bridal jewellery sets, which feature white gold offset by pearls and diamonds with a variety of coloured stones.”

Expert recommendations

GOLDEN NUGGETS

When buying an item of gold in Dubai it is important to remember, even in larger retailers that the price of gold f luctuates and is dependent on the day-to-day gold price set by the Dubai Municipality. Dubai’s price generally follows London’s fixed gold price, which provides a benchmark for the industry worldwide. However, according to Shamlal Ahammed, managing director of international operations for Malabar Gold, “People buy gold as part of their passion for the precious metal. Consequently customers are generally not too concerned about gold rate fluctuation. Added to this is the fact that the gold rate has consistently increased over the last few years and will continue to rise, so buying gold is an investment.”

• T he tomb of Tutankhamun, the ancient Egyptian pharaoh, contained 112kg of gold • Coloured gold is made by mixing gold with different metals – gold alloys with copper have a red tint; those with iron, a blue tint; aluminum, a purple tint; silver a greenish-yellow tint. Nickel and palladium are used to make white gold • Because of its high value, much of the gold mined throughout history is still in circulation in one form or another, so your jewellery could contain gold that was originally mined in prehistoric times • At least 15 percent of annual gold consumption is recycled each year • Gold is measured in carats – the word comes from the carob seed which was used to balance scales in oriental bazaars 5 & 6 Pure Gold 7 & 8 Damas

7

8

Of course, as the saying goes, all that glitters is not gold, so it’s important not to be duped into paying over the odds for belowpar bling. The good news is that the chance of being conned is relatively low thanks to the tight control the government exercises over the gold industry. A spokesperson at Rivoli breaks it down. “It is very important that you know what you want and where to go before you start. There are many reputable jewellers in town, in the Gold Souk and otherwise. I would recommend going to one of them because it’s difficult to be conned into buying something fake or of a lesser quality than advertised. This is largely to do with Dubai Municipality, which carries out random checks on retailers, verifying quality, so there is little chance of being taken advantage of.”

So now that you’re armed with these golden nuggets of information it’s time to be well and truly sold on gold. However, while all visitors to Dubai should experience the frenetic charm of the famous Gold Souk, consumers may benefit from a more sedate shopping expedition in the city’s shopping malls and hotel lobbies. For a novel approach, gold bar vending machines provide customers with the opportunity to buy bullion in a variety of sizes ranging from 2.5g, 5g, 10g and 1 ounce. Located on the 124th floor of the Burj Khalifa, as well at The Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates, the GOLD to go vending machines have up-to-the-minute rates, based on the actual gold spot prices, which means they provide real-time pricing and relinquish mark-ups. But if withdrawing nuggets is a bit too surreal for your tastes, opt for a conventional shopping experience. Damas, Rivoli, Pure Gold and Malabar Gold are just a few of the high-end retailers and you can find their plush stores in Dubai’s shopping malls and five-star hotels. Alternatively, for a one-stop shop for quality purchases, the Gold & Diamond Park, which is located on Sheikh Zayed Road near Mall of the Emirates, has a wide selection of products as well as an army of skilled artisans who are readily available to create bespoke pieces. Dubai’s stores generally stock individual designs as well as a selection of high-end brand names, so while you may have a preference for Carrera Y Carrera, a prized Pasquale Bruni piece on the next shelf may ultimately steal your heart. But whatever you choose, you can be sure it will be the ideal addition to your jewellery collection.

Explore the emirates Visit Abu Dhabi for Formula One. Get back to nature in Umm Al Quwain. Rugged mountain ranges? Head to Al Ain. All in all, the UAE is an exciting place just waiting to be explored

Q With its multicultural population, tower-lined roads and vibrant atmosphere, Dubai is probably the most famous of the seven emirates that form the UAE. But don’t let that stop you from exploring the area because there are all sorts of exciting spots to discover. Depending on your preference for city life or countryside calm, there is something to suit every taste.

ABU DHABI: Capital attraction Abu Dhabi city is the capital of the UAE and the largest emirate in terms of land mass. It is 90 minutes’ drive from Dubai. The city is also home to the Federal National Council and is known for its abundance of embassies and oil companies. A more sedate pace of life makes navigating the city a pleasure and it is home to modern malls, green parks and first-class restaurants and hotels. The city’s seafront Corniche is one of the most popular attractions for visitors and residents, and the multi-million dollar Emirates Palace hotel is a world-renowned luxury destination, dominating the skyline at the far end of the Corniche. Other top attractions include the stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which is open to nonMuslims, and Yas Island, home to Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, a links golf course and the Yas Marina Circuit, which annually hosts the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Grand Prix. The emirate is undergoing rapid development, especially on its profusion of offshore islands that will house cultural attractions such as the Louvre and the Guggenheim museums over the coming years.

AL AIN: The oasis city

2

The birthplace of the late Sheikh Zayed, the first president of the UAE, Al Ain is the second major city in the emirate of Abu Dhabi and touches the border with Oman at the enclave of Buraimi. Boasting the region’s largest oasis, Al Ain is the greenest city in the UAE with shrub-filled parks, palm-lined highways and colourful flowers in the cooler months. The city is also home to one of the UAE’s highest mountains, Jebel Hafeet, which is easily accessible via a 14-kilometre highway. The summit offers 360-degree panoramic views over the low-lying city and surrounding desert, and there’s a hotel just below, which is the ideal location for a mountain-top lunch. Al Ain also boasts a profusion of old forts – some restored and some picture-perfect in their ruinous state – as well as a camel market, central souk, very popular zoo and hot springs. Many of the city’s historical sites have been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List to preserve them for generations to come. 3

FUJAIRAH: East coast adventure 5

Fujairah is renowned for its golden sandy beaches washed by the waters of the Gulf of Oman. An emirate on the verge of development, Fujairah is still a peaceful retreat from hectic city life, fronted by the expanse of ocean with the impressive Hajar mountain range as the backdrop. Fujairah town is a low-rise destination with a mixture of casual restaurants and cosy hotels. Further along the coast are five-star beach resorts, making it a popular weekend spot for city escapees and visiting tourists. The emirate is also a major magnet for scuba diving fans thanks to its numerous coral reefs, which are a haven for marine life on the east coast, including sharks, turtles and rays. There are several historical sites to see, including a 300-year-old fort, the oldest mosque in the UAE at Al Bidayah, and there are still the remains of ancient watchtowers dotted around, which are easily reached by car, bike or on foot. Hot springs and waterfalls are hidden in the mountain scenery and visitors are advised to explore the area only with a licensed tour company or an experienced and well-equipped local contact. The unusual sport of bull butting (where two bulls pit their strength against each other) can still be seen every Friday close to the city centre. And on the trip back be sure to stop off at the Friday Market (open every day) near Masafi for fruit, vegetables and even carpets.

HATTA: Heritage in the hills

6

Hatta is renowned for its landscape and solitude, offering a peaceful alternative to the city. An hour’s drive from Dubai, it’s a great day trip and has many more attractions than first meets the eye. The last stop in the UAE before reaching the border with Oman, a mere 10 kilometres away, Hatta is a point of entry and exit for residents and visitors alike. The town is set in a dramatic location at the foot of the looming Hajar mountain range with a picturepostcard opportunity at every turn. One of the major points of interest is the old fort, which dates back to 1790, and the heritage village, which provides an authentic insight into local life before the discovery of oil.

RAS AL KHAIMAH: Mountain and sea

8

A rugged landscape bordered by lofty mountains and sand-swept desert, Ras Al Khaimah is an action-adventure emirate with an exciting range of activities from the sedentary to the adrenaline fuelled. The emirate has a rich heritage showcased in its historical sites, forts and abandoned villages. Excavations have revealed a history dating back to 5000 BC. A popular place for sun-seekers and weekend getaways, Ras Al Khaimah is home to a number of five-star resorts including The Cove Rotana and the indulgent desert resort Banyan Tree Al Wadi, which also has 32 beachside villas for those who prefer a seaside stay. A relatively new attraction is Iceland Water Park with 20 thrilling Arctic-themed rides and attractions.

UMM AL QUWAIN: Tiny treasure Escape to the tiny emirate of Umm Al Quwain and discover the perfect place to cool off. Located less than 30 minutes from Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain is a tranquil destination as yet unaffected by the hurried pace of its city neighbours. The major draw of the area is Dreamland Aqua Park, a family friendly waterpark with more than 30 rides spread over 250,000 square metres of landscaped gardens. If you’re attracted to high altitudes, you can also try paragliding or skydiving at the local flying club.

Dedicated shoppers must pencil in a visit to the famous Blue Souk, which houses around 600 shops in two wings. Its distinctive architectural style with Islamic influence is a major city landmark SHARJAH: City of culture The emirate of Sharjah is a 20-minute drive from the centre of Dubai – traffic permitting. A word of warning though – avoid the Dubai-Sharjah highway 9 during rush hour or you could find yourself on the road for an hour or more. Dedicated shoppers must pencil in a visit to the famous Blue Souk (Central Market), which houses around 600 shops in two wings. Its distinctive architectural style with Islamic influence is a major city landmark. Traditional purchases from the souk include brass coffee pots, oriental carpets, hand-carved furniture and a wealth of trinkets and treasures from the near east to the subcontinent. Another retail attraction is the wonderful Souk Al Arsah in the heart of the restored museum district. One of the emirate’s oldest souks, it was renovated in traditional style incorporating shells, coral, wood and palm leaves. Items on sale include silver jewellery, coffee pots, wooden chests, spices and perfume. The city’s cultural arts and entertainment hub is Al Qasba. Its waterfront setting is reminiscent of Venetian waterways and there is an excellent choice of local stores selling everything from gifts to clothes, restaurants, theatre shows and its pièce de résistance, the Eye of the Emirates big wheel. In 1998, UNESCO named Sharjah – whose name means ‘rising sun’ – the cultural capital of the Arab world in recognition of its commitment to art, culture and heritage preservation. There are a number of fascinating museums, including archaeology, coins, natural history, science, Islam and heritage.

journey through time Before the sky-high architecture and multi-billion-dollar modernisation, Dubai was a simple fishing port. Concierge discovers the charm of the city in times gone by

Q Words by Emilie Goldstein

Mention Dubai and the first images that spring to mind are sun-soaked beaches, towering skyscrapers and luxurious hotels and resorts. But peel away the shiny new layers and beneath the modern sophistication of the sheikhdom lies an authentic Arabian city that’s full of old-world charm. Before it boasted the tallest tower, the most expensive horse race and the largest artificial island in the world, Dubai was a simple fishing port surrounded by date palms and sand dunes. The commercial heart and lifeblood of the city was concentrated at the Creek, a natural seawater inlet where pearl divers, fishermen, traders and merchants from lands afar would dock their dhows and ply their trade. In the late ’50s, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum put Dubai firmly on the trading map by dredging the creek until it was wide and deep enough for ships to sail. Now, the Creek runs along 14km and divides the city into the Bur Dubai and Deira districts.

portion of the neighbourhood was destroyed to make way for government buildings.” Today Bastakiya has been largely renovated and is lined with boutiques, cafés and art galleries, including Alison’s Majlis Gallery, Dubai’s oldest commercial art gallery. “I’ve always had a passion for art and back in the old days, I used to hold informal soirees as there wasn’t much going on culturally. I’d hang nice paintings on the wall, such as Julian Merrow’s, who did the most fabulous paintings of the Creek. We used to put them in the Majlis, or sitting room, and that’s where the name of the gallery came from,” Alison recalls.

3

Located on the Bur Dubai side of the Creek, Bastakiya takes its name from the affluent textile and pearl traders from Bastak, Iran, who settled here in the 19th century

In its quest to always be bigger and better Dubai emerged 50 years later with an entirely different face – that of an ultra-modern westernised city. But a wander around the Creek tells a different story. The place that started it all is still a vibrant hub for business and a testament to Dubai’s rich cultural and historic heritage. Majlis Gallery owner and longtime Dubai resident Alison Collins says: “When I moved here in 1975 there were random herds of goats and camels just wandering in the city and everything was date palms and sand dunes.” She adds: “The Creek was the centre of Dubai. To go to work I would walk from what is today the Ramada Hotel down to the Bastakiya district, through the souk. Then I’d hop on an abra (water taxi) to get to the other side of the Creek. The Majlis Gallery grew out of walking down this area. I met Iranian merchants in the souk, stopped for some tea and through them got the lease on the house in Bastakiya.”

The Bastakiya district, a National Heritage site, is a good starting point to get acquainted with Dubai’s history. Located on the Bur Dubai side of the Creek, Bastakiya takes its name from the affluent textile and pearl traders from Bastak, Iran, who settled here in the 19 th century. Part of Bastakiya’s endearing charm is its striking architecture, large concentration of courtyard houses and the unique barjeel wind towers that dominate the rooflines. Introduced by Persians before electricity was available, this clever cooling system kept the temperatures pleasant even in the height of summer and was a sign of wealth – the more barjeels a house owner had, the wealthier he was. Alison says: “Bastakiya was a thriving working community when I first arrived. People were going in and out of each other’s houses. They were playing cards on benches in the middle of the roundabout and kids were playing out on the streets. But much of that changed in the ’80s when a large

A short walk from Bastakiya lies the Dubai Museum, a treasure trove of Dubai’s days before oil wealth changed everything. Located in the historic Al Fahidi Fort, which dates back to 1799 and is considered the oldest structure in Dubai, the state-of-the-art museum houses various exhibits that showcase early Arab life. From replicas of authentic weapons, musical instruments and mosques to traditional wooden boats, the museum is worth a visit. Despite it being surrounded by the chaos of the city – shops, hotels and restaurants – it is still possible to be transported back in time to Dubai’s tranquil shores, even if just for a moment. The Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House, which was the official residence of the grandfather of the actual ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is also a must to delve deeper into Dubai’s ancient days. Built in 1896, the national monument boasts intricately carved wooden doors, mosaics, and window frames typical of the traditional Arabian home. Today, it serves as a museum and houses a rare collection of old family photographs, paintings, manuscripts and art pieces. The exterior, with its well-manicured garden, large courtyard and beautiful views, makes for a good photo opportunity.

Leaving behind the courtyards and museums, the souks successfully capture the essence of the city’s beauty and culture. Stroll through the textile souk – teeming with merchants haggling over the price of bright fabrics, this market is noisy, bright and fascinating. Or why not take an abra across to the Deira side of the Creek and have a peek at the gold and spice souks? With shopkeepers bustling about, Iranian merchants discussing business over tea and traditionally clad ladies bargaining hard for products, this is a unique chance to soak up the local culture. As the day draws to a close and the sun sets in over the Dubai skyline, take a moment to stop by Bayt al Wakeel, an Arabic restaurant

housed in the oldest office building in Dubai. Take a seat on the deck and simply watch life go by. From the smells, which are a stark contrast between old and new, to the effervescence of the trading dhows that still rush in and out transporting cargo, the heart and soul of the Creek saturates the senses. For all its extravagance and opulence, Dubai is a wonderful mix of past and present. And as Alison points out, old Dubai is never far away: “I can’t think of many other places in the world where water is so important. The Creek is the lifeblood of the city and while technology has seeped in, I expect things will still look the same a hundred years from now.”

VANTAGE POINT The world’s tallest tower, biggest shopping mall and largest dancing fountain. Ladies and gentlemen, we give you Downtown Dubai

It doesn’t matter where you are in Dubai, the Burj Khalifa is never too far out of sight. Like a symbolic compass rising from the vast landscape, the shimmering silver needle of the Burj Khalifa is a visitor’s guide back to one of the central parts of the city – Downtown Dubai. Like so many areas in the emirate, Downtown Dubai is a visual spectacle. From the colossal 828-metrehigh Burj Khalifa, which thanks to the turbo-charged elevators get you to the top of in less than 60 seconds, to the awe-inspiring Dubai Fountain, everything is designed to make you gape. But while we concede that this neighbourhood boasts many visual attractions – this is after all where Hollywood heavyweight Tom Cruise famously filmed Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol – there’s more to Downtown Dubai than jaw-dropping sights. Home to a manmade 30-acre lake, vast grass land and walkways that encircle the entire development, this is one of the few places in Dubai where pedestrians roam freely, without the encumbrance of heavy traffic. From exercise classes which run on the greens to families who can often be seen cycling on the picturesque pathways, there is never a dull moment. The area is even more animated after dark when spectators gather to watch the remarkable displays of The Dubai Fountain. Synchronised to music, this fountain has danced to the likes of Celine Dion and Lionel Richie and is accompanied by dazzling lightshows. Foodies are also in luck because with every type of cuisine from sushi to shawarmas on offer, the Downtown promenade provides the ideal stop for al fresco diners to gather. Big favourites include Italian eatery, Carluccio’s, which has front-row views of The Dubai Fountain, and homegrown culinary brand More. Photo opportunities are also round every corner, from the obligatory Burj Khalifa ground-upwards composition to snaps of the fountain in full spray. Art buffs should direct their attention to Fernando Botero’s famous Horse 2007 sculpture. Commissioned as part of the Art Programme for Downtown Dubai, Horse 2007 is located near The Dubai Mall entrance and offers the chance to snap to your heart’s content.

If you’ve seen the sights of the city, swiped your credit card in designer boutiques and photographed the sunset over the Arabian Gulf, you may be wondering what to do next. You could zoom to the top of the world’s tallest tower or step back in time during an afternoon at Dubai Museum, but if you’re looking for a fresh experience why not take a seaplane flight from Dubai Creek to Yas Island and enjoy a bird’s-eye view of some of the UAE’s most spectacular sights? The newly launched flight with Seawings takes around 40 minutes and provides spectacular views of iconic landmarks such as The World islands, Palm Jumeirah, Burj Khalifa, Yas Marina Circuit and Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. It also offers some of the best photographic opportunities in the UAE and, best of all, there is no traffic or queuing up involved.

Flying at 2,000 feet (609 metres), the plane soars over the Port Rashid area, giving way to views of the iconic QE2. As ‘Old Dubai’ fades into the distance the horizon is overtaken by modern marvels and the imposing structure of the Burj Khalifa comes into sight. Standing 828 metres (2,716 feet) tall with more than 160 storeys, it holds world records for the tallest free-standing structure, highest number of storeys, highest occupied floor, highest outdoor observation deck, elevator

with the longest travel distance and the tallest service elevator. From the sky Downtown Dubai is even more impressive than at ground level. The magnitude of The Dubai Mall – the world’s largest shopping mall is awe-inspiring and the aquamarine waters of the Burj Lake add a vibrant dash of colour. From there the seaplane heads south down the coast and circles another well-known Dubai landmark, the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab hotel, which is built on an artificial island 280 metres off shore. This exclusive, luxury hotel hosts the ‘ultimate afternoon tea’ which is particularly popular with visitors. A little further on, the world-famous Palm Jumeirah dominates the view. Built in the shape of a palm tree, it is the world’s largest artificial island and its trunk, fronds and surrounding crescent are home to luxury villas, apartments, hotels and beach clubs. Sitting proudly at the top of the crescent is the magnificent pink Atlantis The Palm, Dubai, a popular hotel and leisure destination which is home to Aquaventure water park and Dolphin Bay, as well as some of the city’s best restaurants, such as the renowned Nobu and Ronda Locatelli. Heading slightly inland, the architectural wonders of Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Lakes Towers emerge through the clouds. These ultra-modern developments contain residential and business towers, retail outlets, restaurants, cafés and hotels. They centre

Capital attraction As the journey closes in on Abu Dhabi a disc-shaped building stands out. Aldar HQ, home of Yas Island developer Aldar, is one of Abu Dhabi’s more unique structures and with Capital Gate (the tower with the world’s steepest incline) and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, it is giving the city’s skyline international acclaim. Looping around, Yas Marina Circuit comes into view. This is where the Abu Dhabi Formula One Grand Prix is staged each November in front of a crowd of 50,000 spectators and an international television audience of up to 600 million. The 5.55-kilometre track winds around

the picturesque Yas Marina and through the futuristic Yas Viceroy hotel. From here, the scale of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is evident. In fact, among its many accolades, it holds the record for the world’s largest roof at 200,000 square metres and also the world’s largest Ferrari logo, which is 65 metres long and covers 3,000 square metres. What else would you expect from the world’s largest indoor theme park? The world’s fastest rollercoaster and you may even see it speeding along its tracks at 240kmh.

The 40-minute aerial sightseeing is over but there is time to expeience the world’s only Ferrari theme park before making the journey back by car. Transport back to Dubai is included in the price. Cream of the green Swing by one of Dubai’s premier golfing greens

Q Much like the rest of this extraordinary city, the Dubai golfing scene is growing at a rate of knots. Now boasting a stunning portfolio of first-class courses Dubai’s tourist scene is populated with passionate players, keen to perfect their backswings. And who could blame them? The scenery is beautiful, the clubhouses are five star and the city is home to an array of famous golfing events. Tiger Woods, Seve Ballesteros and Ernie Els are just a few of the big-name golfers to have played on these greens and in February the city was kept enthralled during a toe-to-toe encounter between Stephen Gallacher and Rafael Cabrera Bello as they battled it out on the fairways of Emirates Golf Club during the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. But other than celebrity contenders and palm-lined booby traps, which promise to thrill and kill your spirit all at the same time, what else can visitors expect from Dubai’s golfing greens? Concierge takes a look at what’s on the cards.

Emirates Golf Club The greens of the Emirates Golf Club are still aglow from the starry line up of last month’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic. Alvaro Quiros, Lee Westwood and Thomas Bjorn all tried their luck on the smooth fairways, but ultimately it was Rafael Cabrera Bello who took home the cup. As well as being a hotbed of celebrity players, the Emirates Golf Club holds historical significance in Dubai. Styled in the fashion of traditional Bedouin tents, it is home to the Majlis and The Faldo courses and the former was the first grass course in the Middle East. Known for its tricky holes, this is a place where grown men weep. “The third shot into the par-5, 18th on the Majlis course is extremely difficult,” says Stephen Deane, head academy professional. “The player is faced with water and a narrow green, with the added pressure of peering eyes from the clubhouse.” The Faldo was designed by the legendary Nick Faldo and is also a popular spot with veteran players. Faldo’s trademark tees create an exciting experience and the course is also fully floodlit, making it suitable for night games. Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club Voted one of the world’s ‘Top 100 Must-Play Golf Courses’, Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club first opened in 1993. The dhow-inspired clubhouse once stood solitary on Dubai’s fabled landscape. These days it’s just one of the city’s many architectural wonders, but the fusion of heritage and modernity has made it one of the most photographed landmarks in the emirate. With undulating fairways, lakes and mounds, the par-71 course measures 6,967 yards and promises a challenging journey from the first tee to the 18th green. “The course always promises an enjoyable round,” says George Kasparis, senior golf professional. “Because it is located next to the iconic Dubai Creek, water is a feature throughout, which presents a true challenge.” However, you don’t need to be a visor-wearing pro to play on these greens because the Dubai Creek Golf Academy boasts excellent all-round amenities. “We always offer golfers a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere,” says Kasparis. “Marshals are on hand to assist and we have six PGA-qualified teaching professionals available to help you with any part of your game.”

Al Badia Golf Club by InterContinental Dubai Festival City Designed by distinguished golf course architect Robert Trent Jones II, Al Badia Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-72 championship golf course, which joins a world-class green with hi-tech training facilities. The club’s services include the region’s only TaylorMade Performance Lab, featuring the MATT (Motion Analysis Technology of TaylorMade) swing analysis and club fitting system, as well as an indoor Science and Motion (SAM) PuttLab to improve putting skills. But if technology fails you, you can always do things the old-fashioned way at the club’s golf academy. “Our experienced team knows how important the first impression is, so we try to build a supportive atmosphere for players,” says club professional Matthew Parker. “Some of the finest professionals in the country are on hand to help golfers develop their skills, regardless of ability or experience.” And for those who like to take it easy, swing by Blades. Well known for its panoramic views of the course, dreamy smoked salmon bagels and meltin-the-mouth apple crumble, it’s a great location to chill before or after a game. Jebel Ali Golf Resort & Spa Admittedly, with only nine holes (3,299 yards par 36) it’s a little on the small side, but as the saying goes, ‘good things come in small packages’. A firm favourite with casual golfers, this resort course was the brainchild of golf course architect Peter Harradine. With his master craftsmanship each hole has been uniquely landscaped with exotic trees, shrubs and the original desert flora. It also features a few tricky spots which are designed to test even the most seasoned golfers. “The 5th hole is a course manager’s dream,” explains James Williams, director of golf at Jebel Ali Golf Resort & Spa. “The element of risk and reward on this par-4 hole, which measures only 311 yards from the back tee, provides the perfect opportunity for brave golfers to throw caution to the wind.” Added to the charm are the peacocks, which nonchalantly wander the fairways, and the views of the sparkling Arabian Gulf. “The combination of the sea views, a picturesque course with wandering peacocks, guinea fowl and partridge creates a very different playing atmosphere,” says Williams. The Address Montgomerie Dubai Designed by Ryder Cup star Colin Montgomerie, you can expect big things from this spectacular links-style course. Spread across 7,396 yards and combining the great traditions of Scottish golf with an Arabian environment, The Address Montgomerie Dubai is consistently ranked as one of the Middle East’s top courses. It’s a testing game for all levels of golfer, but don’t be intimidated. With no handicap restriction, beginners as well as seasoned players are at ease on these perfectly manicured lawns. “The best feature of this course is that it challenges all levels of golfer,” explains Rhys Beecher, senior golf instruction manager. “We have a selection of tee boxes, which allows the course to play the appropriate length for the standard of golfer.”

That said, there are some fiddly spots to look out for. The infamous 18th hole, which is a long par-5 surrounded by water is said to be one of the toughest shots on the course. Likewise, the sixth and ninth holes, which sweep around water hazards are also quite sweat inducing. “These three lakes have accumulated quite a few balls over the years,” says Beecher. For those who want to gain a deeper knowledge and improve their playing skills, the indoor swing rooms have the latest computerised video swing analysis, and short game practice areas are available to help with everything from putting stroke to a major overhaul of your backswing. Afternoon delight Tuck into tea and cake during a traditional afternoon tea at one of Dubai’s five-star locations

Q There are many historical accounts of how afternoon tea came about but the most famous is the tale of Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford. At the time, the customary habit of serving the evening meal as late as 9pm left the Duchess famished and as the story goes she complained of ‘having that sinking feeling’ during the late afternoon. Her cure? A cup of tea and cake. Not only did the daily routine perk her up, it also caught on with her friends and gradually evolved into the ritual we know today as afternoon tea. While the practice of serving afternoon tea and cakes at home has long since died out, the custom lives on in many high-end restaurants across Dubai. From the dizzy heights of At.mosphere, where you can enjoy an elegant assortment of treats while overlooking the city from the 122nd floor of the Burj Khalifa, to The Ritz-Carlton Dubai, which is famed as one of the first hotels in the emirate to introduce the custom, this quintessentially English tradition has become something of an institution on these sunny shores.

87

Lobby Lounge One of Dubai’s most famous afternoon teas is at The Ritz-Carlton Dubai. Nestled away in its palatial grounds, the hotel is an oasis set at the north end of The Walk – Jumeirah Beach Residence. Tastefully understated and eternally welcoming, when you pass through the doors you’re transported from the everyday frenzy of the busy metropolis to a tranquil escape. Find your way to the lobby lounge, which with its high ceiling, grandiose chandeliers and sumptuous velvet sofas, makes the ideal setting for afternoon tea. There are three options available including The Devonshire Tea, The Ritz-Carlton Afternoon Tea and The Royal Tea. As the name suggests, succulent scones served with Devonshire clotted cream form the highlight of The Devonshire Tea. The Ritz-Carlton Afternoon Tea also includes freshly baked scones as well as English tea sandwiches. For something a tad more indulgent, try The Royal Tea, which includes a sparkling Champagne cocktail. Location: The Ritz-Carlton Dubai Price: AED125 per person / Contact: 04 3994000

The Ritz-Carlton Afternoon Tea also includes English tea sandwiches The Lounge Hidden away on the edge of Dubai Creek, Park Hyatt Dubai is one of the emirate’s most inconspicuous hotels. However, once you’ve navigated the winding roads leading to the lavish resort the subtlety stops. In addition to the breathtaking grounds, which are abundant with greenery, fountains and pools, the interior is surprisingly flamboyant with sweeping marble corridors and crystal chandeliers. The Lounge, where guests can indulge in one of the city’s finest afternoon teas, operates the service from 3 to 7pm daily. The elegant meal comprises three courses – the first includes finger sandwiches packed with a tasty selection of fillings such as smoked organic salmon, cucumber and cream cheese, fresh mozzarella and tomatoes. The second course consists of classic English trifle, Scottish shortbread, fresh berry tartlets and delicious chocolate éclairs. For baked goods, guests can look forward to the third course which includes freshly baked raisin and plain scones served with Devonshire clotted cream, homemade lemon curd and a variety of jams and preserves. In addition to the mouthwatering fare, the refreshing assortment of fine teas, including assam breakfast, Earl Grey and Darjeeling, finishes the experience perfectly. Al Bayt After a retail expedition through The Dubai Mall, even the most seasoned of shoppers will be left jelly-kneed. Take the weight off your feet at The Palace – The Old Town and enjoy afternoon tea at Al Bayt lobby lounge. From 2 to 6pm daily, visitors can indulge in a selection of aromatic teas, such as meng ding huang ya – a rare yellow tea which is rolled in ancient yellow papers and left to dry naturally – and delicious finger sandwiches. The flavourful treats are followed by freshly baked scones, accompanied by strawberry jam and clotted cream. There is also a beautifully moist carrot cake to sink your teeth into as well as a blueberry yoghurt tea cake which is filled with flavour. The final course comprises a selection of melt-in-the-mouth pastries such as mixed-berry tartlet and tangy lemon-curd meringue. Chocolate lovers can look forward to a divine chocolate mousse and passion fruit crème brûlée. Location: The Palace – The Old Town Price: AED120 per person / Contact: 04 4287888

At.mosphere Dubai is famous for its ever-changing skyline and there’s no better way to take it in than from the 122nd floor of the Burj Khalifa. A bar with serious altitude, visitors flock to At.mosphere purely for the view, but it would be a mistake to visit for the scenery alone. In addition to its lofty location, At.mosphere has a few tricks up its sleeve, including an elegant afternoon tea, which is served every day from 3 to 6pm daily. Sandwiches crammed with delicious fillings such as marinated tomato, truffle egg and cream cheese with caviar are laid side by side with fluffy soft rolls which overflow with tasty wagyu beef, rocket and cheese. Once you’ve enjoyed the savoury course, it’s time to move on to the delicious fruit skewers and an assortment of warm scones, which are served with clotted cream and lemon curd. The At.mosphere afternoon tea is served with mocktails, but for those who are looking for the ultimate indulgence, opt for a supped-up version, which is served with a glass of bubbly. flavour of arabia With its roots deep in Middle Eastern culture, shisha smoking is a pastime that shouldn’t be missed for those seeking an authentic experience

Q

The sweet smell of shisha smoke wafting through the air of the UAE is a common one, as this sociable pursuit has become part of the rich culture of the Middle East. Groups of men and women or couples will gather to enjoy shisha over a coffee, dinner or just by itself in a relaxing setting. Shisha, derived from the Persian word shishe meaning ‘glass’, is also known as a hookah in East African countries. A shisha pipe consists of a bowl at the top of the pipe, which is packed with flavoured tobacco and covered with a piece of foil. The foil is pierced several times before hot coals are rested on top. The roasted tobacco smoke is drawn through a glass jar of water before being inhaled through a hose. Because of the bubbles created in the water as it is smoked, shisha is also commonly referred to as hubbly bubbly. It costs anywhere between AED35 and AED50 to enjoy shisha with a flavour of your choice. Take your pick from the many traditional and exotic flavours, with favourites such as mint, apple, grape, strawberry and lemon. These tobaccos create a pleasant smell in the air, far removed from the strong smell of cigarettes and cigars. The origins of shisha are disputed, with India, Persia and Turkey all making a claim on the pastime as their own. However, the most ancient traces of shisha smoking have been found in Ethiopia, with the earliest form of shisha equipment being carbon dated to around 1320. The first poem to include reference to shisha smoking originated in Persia and was written in 1535. But it seems shisha smoking started to become prevalent in the mid-1500s court of Mughal Emperor Akbar I in Rajistan,

Fa s t fa cT On a recent trip to the UAE, American celebrity Kim Kardashian tweeted that she had tried shisha for the first time at Abu Dhabi’s Alhan Restaurant in the Grand Millennium Al Wahda.

India, where his Persian physician prescribed a new way to enjoy smoking. He recommended that smoke be drawn through water to purify it before inhalation. The concept of the hookah was popular and became a matter of prestige and was synonymous with the affluent. Whether this form of smoking was the Persian physician’s own innovation, or merely imported from his home country remains unknown. The trend for shisha smoking has since spread throughout the Middle East and even

recently to the West too, with shisha lounges popping up across the UK (until the smoking ban), Australia and the US. Although smoking shisha for an hour has been equated to smoking 50 regular cigarettes, don’t let the health statistics deter you from sampling this interesting and deep-rooted tradition of the Middle East. If you wish to introduce this pastime to your friends at home, beautifully decorated shisha pipes and tobacco can be purchased from any smoker’s shop.

my dubai

Long-time resident Yousef Tuqan, CEO Flip Media, shares his tips on how to have a fun-filled Dubai holiday

1

I moved to Dubai 16 years ago, but have lived in the Middle East for most of my life. It didn’t take me long to feel settled here. It’s where I built my career, met my wife and I hope to call it home for many years to come. This is a city with endless milestones and celebrations, so it’s difficult to pinpoint one favourite memory, but if I had to pick it would be my first week in the city. I remember looking around at all the opulence – particularly all the sports cars on the roads – and being absolutely awestruck. My favourite time of year is from midNovember to April. The weather is great, the sporting calendar is in full swing with events like the Rugby Sevens and the Dubai World Cup and everyone is in a festive mood. It’s a great time to visit the city. Eating out is a big part of life in Dubai and while the city is abundant with famous restaurants, save a bit of time on your itinerary for a few of the more low-key options such as Bu Qtair, an Indian restaurant in

94

Jumeira. Marvellously juxtaposed against Dubai’s predominantly high-end culinary scene, this charming eatery is little more than a Portakabin with a couple of plastic tables outside. Don’t let that put you off though, because while it’s unfussy, the fried-fish curry and boiled cassava root dishes are not to be missed. For something glamorous Traiteur at Park Hyatt Dubai serves amazing French food. Zuma, which is located at Dubai International Financial Centre, has a great vibe and amazing Japanese cuisine, while Splendido at The RitzCarlton is famous for its fantastic service. When I have guests in town I take them to At the Top, which is located on the 124th floor of the Burj Khalifa. The building itself is incredibly impressive and nothing else on earth rivals it, but the panoramic views of the city really seal the deal. Modern marvels aside, the older side of the city also has its charms and I like to take guests to Dubai Creek where they can cross the water on an abra, which is an old-fashioned water taxi.

Shisha, sometimes referred to as hubbly bubbly, is a water pipe used for smoking flavoured tobacco and can be found at cafés and bars across the city. This is an authentic and traditional souvenir that can be easily bought in Dubai. Tobacco and coals are also readily available. The khanjar is the traditional dagger of Oman, carried by men in a sheath, decorated with silver and worn on a belt similarly decorated. Ornamental and sometimes very elaborate daggers can be found in Dubai’s souks; a great souvenir reflecting the region’s customs. Gold is popular with tourists visiting Dubai. The Gold Souk is a must for those looking to buy jewellery at affordable prices. Dubai’s souks have a huge variety of original and authentic souvenirs such as carpets, calligraphy art, scarves, Arabic oudh (perfume), wooden camels, jewellery boxes and glass perfume bottles.

It was a successful partnership, but in 1968 the United Kingdom ended the treaty. Struggling to find a tee time or looking for an alternative challenge? The UAE has other excellent courses to feed your need. The Abu Dhabi Golf Club (02 5588990) is managed by Troon Golf and located just ten minutes from the airport. This superb, 27-hole championship course has excellent facilities and a distinctive clubhouse shaped like a falcon. The course itself is pleasantly tough with many water hazards to negotiate. Also in the capital is the Saadiyat Beach Golf Club (02 5578000), designed by Gary Player and the Gulf’s only ocean course. Heading north, Tower Links (07 2278555) in Ras Al Khaimah is a tricky 18-hole course that meanders through a mangrove swamp and has the Hajar Mountains as a backdrop. The back nine holes are also floodlit, meaning you can make the most of your journey.

Go local Dubai is abundant with Arabic restaurants but for authentic Emirati cuisine we recommend the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. The centre offers a variety of programmes which can be experienced over a spread of traditional Emirati dishes. Local cuisine is uncomplicated and relies on meat, fish and rice, enhanced by the creative use of spices and other aromatic flavourings. Traditional dishes include ouzi, which is a whole roast lamb stuffed with fragrant rice, and balaleet – a fine egg pasta with onion.

Although the UAE is a Muslim country, alcohol is permitted in several emirates including Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Wine, Champagne and spirits are available from most five-star hotels and as a tourist you are free to enjoy the lively bar scene that Dubai has become famous for. However, be warned, there is zero tolerance to drink driving. One sip is one sip too many. Likewise being drunk in public is a criminal offence. Both crimes are treated seriously and are punishable with a fine and in more extreme cases imprisonment.

ARABIC TASTE Hummus: Well known and loved even beyond the Middle East, this Arabic dip or spread is made from cooked, mashed chickpeas blended with ground sesame seeds, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic. Moutabel: A delicious and spicy smoked aubergine dip that is popular in Syria, Lebanon and Palestine. Fattoush: This Levantine salad is made from toasted or fried pieces of pita bread and mixed with lettuce, cucumber, onion and other vegetables. Sambusek: Small, triangular pastry pies filled with cheese, meat or spinach. Ouzi: This popular baked lamb and spiced rice dish is a favourite during Ramadan, the Islamic holy month. Umm Ali: Similar to bread and butter pudding served in the west, this favourite Arabic dessert contains milk, pastry and nuts, and is a staple dish in many buffets.

SMOKE SIGNALS Smoking shisha (hubbly bubbly) is very popular in Dubai. The Middle Eastern water pipe, which is thought to have originated around 500 years ago, purifies and cools the smoke from flavoured tobacco heated on top of the pipe by coals. The most popular flavours are apple, mint, strawberry, apricot and grape. Although relaxing and sociable, estimates suggest that an hour of shisha smoking equates to inhaling 50 cigarettes. However, if you’re after an authentic experience, smoking shisha is a must. Just remember not to inhale too deeply and to share your shisha among friends. This is a social tradition and to be enjoyed in groups or couples.
