Trade is at the heart of Middle Eastern culture, so it is easy to see why Dubai has become a world-famous shopping destination for travellers with a passion for fashion. Incredible malls provide a comprehensive selection of luxury brands and among them are some of the most lavish labels in the world. The jewellery industry makes up a big part of the emirate’s retail sector and diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds are just a few of the precious stones that feature in this season’s collections. For the low-down on the most opulent pieces available in Dubai’s plush boutiques, turn to page 38. TASTE

Ask the concierge

Afternoon tea

Felix Trueb, assistant concierge manager at the Hyatt Regency Dubai shares his tips for a st ylish stay

Dubai is an amazing city with great diversity. From tall skyscrapers to sand dunes and blue sea, there is so much to enjoy. If you want to take it all in, I would encourage guests to book a private helicopter and hover over the city. It’s a great way to see the sights. Many visitors come to the emirate for retail therapy and I always suggest BurJuman as their first port of call. The mall is home to a lot of exclusive brands and provides a great shopping experience that isn’t too crowded. Adrenaline junkies should try skydiving over Palm Jumeirah. They could also try off-road exploring. There are many tour operators in the city and tours can be booked through their hotel’s front desk. When it comes to nightlife, Dubai is unsurpassed. There are so many chic bars and nightclubs to try. My particular favourites are Cavalli Club at The Fairmont Dubai, People by Crystal at Raffles Dubai and Armani Privé at Armani Hotel Dubai. Of course, some guests might like to spend the evening in a romantic setting so I would suggest Miyako, which is a Japanese restaurant at Hyatt Regency Dubai. It’s very intimate and has a cosy ambience. Dubai has become famous for its modern architectural developments, but there is also an old side to the city. I suggest that guests take the time to visit Bastakiya, which is Dubai’s old quarter. From here you can explore the famous textile, Gold and Spice souks and admire authentic windtowers, which provided the original airconditioning system before the city’s modernisation. This is a great place to take pictures so be sure to have your camera with you. Another place for photo opportunities is The Yacht Club at Dubai Creek. This is a very picturesque spot with stunning views of the city skyline.

Afternoon tea is a Dubai institution with many of the city’s top restaurants putting on lavish spreads. Expect anything from cucumber sandwiches to caviar on blinis, alongside a staggering range of teas and gourmet pastries. Our top recommendations include Nineteen at The Address Montgomerie and At.mosphere (pictured) which is located on the 122nd floor of the Burj Khalifa.

DISCOVER Mosque tour

Hidden away in the suburb of Umm Suqeim near Jumeira, you’ll find Al Farooq Omar Bin Al Khattab Mosque – one of only a few mosques in the UAE open to non-Muslims. Known for its decorative mihrabs (ornamentally embellished indoor prayer areas), the organisers run tours six days a week. For bookings call 04 3944448.

Discover Hatta

For travellers with a keen sense of adventure take a trip to Hatta, which is an hour’s drive from Dubai down the Hatta Road. The last stop in the UAE before reaching the border with Oman, Hatta is known for its beautiful mountainous terrain and the Hatta Pools, which are natural water ponds (pictured).

Island fever A symbol of glamour, wealth and five-star luxury, Palm Jumeirah has become a global icon, helping to put Dubai firmly on the international map. Visible from space, this iconic island is often referred to as the eighth wonder of the world and was a whopping eight years in the making. Construction began in 2001 after Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Moha m med bi n R ash id A l M a k tou m, decided that a palm-shaped island should be built to increase the emirate’s coastline, which was in huge demand to accommodate eager residents, new hotels and attractions. Measuring 5km by 5km and covering an area bigger than 800 football pitches, Palm Jumeirah is the largest manmade island in the world and engineers used 94 million cubic metres of sand and seven million tonnes of rock to create the AED44 billion (US$12.3 billion) island. 20

Action Time Be a good sport and arm yourself with one of these activity-inspired timepieces

Q It’s something of a truism to say that men are competitive creatures. Whether they’re hitting hole in ones on a golf course or putting pedal to the metal on the racetrack, most males will do their testosterone-fuelled best to take the first place in the sport they love. As a celebration of sporting excellence, nothing says ‘winner’ like an activity-inspired timepiece. But with an abundance of sports watches on the market, from the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra, which is a golfer’s dream watch, to the Oris ProDiver Diver (pictured) – the perfect chronograph for diving devotees – watch shopping can be a time-consuming business. The good news is that at any time of year Dubai is a destination for shoppers and highend watch retailers, such as Rivoli, Levant and Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons can be found around almost every corner. So even if the holiday itinerary is action-packed there’s always an opportunity to shop for the perfect timepiece.

jewels of distinction Whether it’s earrings, rings, bracelets or a brilliant diamond necklace you are after, Dubai is home to dazzling collection of high jewellery

Q w o r d s b y c at h e r i n e l a n g l e y

The vaults at every major jewellery boutique in France are due to be raided this month as Hollywood’s finest prepare to dazzle at the Cannes Film Festival. Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Angelina Jolie are just a few of the Hollywood starlets who are expected to attend the high-profile event and it goes without sayng that they will literally look a million dollars as they sashay up and down the red carpet. But while the lucky ladies of Tinseltown do the rounds at the world’s most famous jewellery boutiques, Dubai visitors can also look forward to a plethora of dazzling pieces, because the emirate is home to a wide variety of high-jewellery collections. Ranked just behind London as the second most-targeted retail destination in the world, Dubai eclipses established markets such as New York, Paris and Hong Kong. With this in mind, it’s not surprising that the city has become a hotbed for well-regarded jewellery brands such as Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels and Piaget. Similarly, a variety of new key players are also emerging and making their mark within the region. Leviev (pictured), which is known for its colourful collection of diamonds, and Russian-owned jewellery house Maximilian London, are just two of the new additions to the jewellery scene. Mention the words Tiffany & Co. and the first thing that springs to mind is ‘the ring of rings’, but while Tiffany & Co. is famed for producing the ultimate statement in romance, the American powerhouse has a trove of treasures to offer. “Tiffany & Co. has always been a leader in introducing customers to the hidden allure of lesser-known gemstones,” explains Ghada El-Kari, merchandising director at Tiffany & Co. “Tanzanite, kunzite, tsavorite and morganite stones will feature prominently in our 2012 collections.” This season Tiffany & Co. has taken inspiration from nature and these Peacock earrings and bracelet, crafted from platinum with pear-shaped tanzanites and diamonds (pictured above), are a perfect example of how trends are moving towards bold colours and flamboyant designs. Tiffany & Co. is available at Atlantis The Palm, Dubai, Mall of the Emirates and The Dubai Mall

The Winter Palace Ball in Saint Petersburg, the Century Ball in Venice, the Black & White Ball in New York and the Oriental Ball and the Proust Ball in Paris are the inspiration behind Van Cleef & Arpels’ latest collection, Bals de Legend. “The balls of the 20 th century were an expression of sumptuous living,” explains Alban Belloir, Middle East and India director for Van Cleef & Arpels. “They brought guests such as Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor and Salvador Dali together in prestigious locations.” With this in mind the collection was conceived with a variety of opulent stones and unique designs. “It took more than 18 months to design these pieces,” says Belloir. “And precious stones such as emeralds, sapphires, black opals and rose-cut diamonds play a big part in the assortment.” Van Cleef & Arpels is available at BurJuman and The Dubai Mall

Garrard

Leviev opened its first store in London in 2006 and since then the prestigious jeweller has added to its international presence with stores in New York, Moscow and Dubai. Sold through Levant in the UAE, Leviev showcases extraordinary stones in a variety of colours, including extremely rare red diamonds. “Over the last few years we’ve seen the emergence of coloured diamonds and recent trends have veered towards the more unusual colours,” says Mumaij Moidu, marketing manager at Leviev. “Blue, green, yellow and red diamonds are among the rarest and customers are now much more selective.” The high-end label last year unveiled its collection of 13 red diamonds. Ranging in size from 0.46 to 1.16 carats, the entire set is just over 10 carats and was accumulated over eight years. With a superlative supply of rare diamonds, the company claims that one diamond in every three on the planet is touched by Leviev, from ownership of mines, to cutting and polishing, to the creation of jewellery. Leviev is available at Levant stores throughout Dubai

With a rich heritage that dates back to the 18th century, Garrard is one of the world’s oldest jewellery houses. “Women around the world appreciate Garrard’s history,” says CEO, Eric Deardoff. “When you buy one of our pieces you know that we have over 275 years of experience.” Having served as the crown jeweller to the British Royal family, Garrard has received its fair share of complex commissions, but one of the most delicate has been to provide regalia, insignia, medals and prestigious awards to the most honourable members of society. In honour of its strong military heritage Garrard has created Star & Garter. Conceived under the direction of creative director Stephen Webster, the new collection features more than 40 pieces and the signature design is the famous three-star ring, which spans three fingers. “I think craftsmanship plays a huge part in deciding whether to invest in a piece of jewellery,” explains Deardoff. “Our hard-earned reputation is dependent on this and we guarantee exquisite jewellery that is beautifully crafted.” Garrard is available at The Dubai Mall

Mightier than the sword Rediscover the joy of the written word by investing in a beautiful pen that can be treasured for ever

Q w o r d s b y c h a r l o t t e va n d e n b r o u q u e

The pen has played an important role in some of the most monumental moments in history. Simple signatures using a quill and ink sealed the destiny of nations on meticulously handwritten documents such as the Magna Carta and the Declaration of Independence, while literary works of art like Romeo and Juliet, Wuthering Heights and Pride and Prejudice, which transformed the genre of romantic fiction, began life as handwritten words. Even contemporary masterpieces such as On the Road by Jack Kerouac and J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter were likely first conceived as hurried notes on paper, and for that reason it’s important to remember the power of the pen. Rediscover the romance of putting pen to paper with Concierge’s pick of the best writing implements on the market.

Montegrappa Frank Sinatra

For more than a century Bulgari has embodied the Italian spirit and style through its beautifully designed accessories. The Bulgaris descend from an ancient Greek family of silversmiths, who crafted exquisite trinkets from the precious material, selling first in their native Greece and then moving to Rome to open their first shop in 1884. The sterling-silver Bulgari Scripta Volant is more than just a pen, as it represents over 100 years of craftsmanship handed down from generation to generation. Similarly, this handsome pen can be enjoyed, treasured and passed to the next generation as a reminder of the power of the written word. Bulgari is available at Mall of the Emirates, The Boulevard – Emirates Towers and The Dubai Mall

Luxury brand Montgrappa pays homage to some of the biggest stars of the 20 th century in its ‘Icons’ series. Frank Sinatra follows Mohammed Ali and Bruce Lee in being the inspiration behind a stunning set of writing instruments. The legendary maestro once said, “Orange is the happiest colour”, and this ballpoint pen is decorated in his favourite hue. The pin-stripe motif takes its inspiration from the dapper suits that Sinatra often donned and the magnificent cap is emblazoned with his signature fedora hat with the pocket clip carved into the shape of an old-style microphone. If Sinatra’s music isn’t enough of a reminder of his talent, then this is sure to delight a devoted enthusiast. Montegrappa is available at Rivoli stores across the UAE

The legend that is Karl Lagerfeld, shows once again that his genius for design knows no bounds. After joining forces with the likes of CocaCola to project his vision on to a Diet Coke bottle and with Steiff to produce a limited-edition teddy bear in his own likeness, he has now joined the ranks of luxury brand S.T. Dupont to design this stunning Prestige fountain pen. Inspired by the signature fan he is often pictured with, a top view of the pen reveals that this shape is carried throughout the length. Lagerfeld hand-picked the lotus red-coloured lacquer for its regal elegance and matched the shade with the gold finishes and the precious gem mounted on the clip. Exemplifying style and sophistication, the pen has also been designed for the comfort of the writer to ensure that in moments of inspiration words flow without interruption. S.T. Culture club While Dubai is an ultra-modern metropolis, it is filled with cultural experiences that showcase the rich history of this fascinating city

Q Words by Emilie Goldstein

Shopping? Check. Desert driving? Check. Five-star pampering? Check, check check. From swiping your card in a designer boutique, to strapping on a parachute and hurling yourself from a plane, Dubai has a lot to offer when it comes to entertainment. But while these are all excellent reasons to visit, the rich history of the emirate, which is deeply rooted in the Islamic traditions of Arabia, also provides a fascinating experience for visitors. We’ve selected, tried and tested the best activities to bring you closer to the local culture and its people.

Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum Al Maktoum House Did you know that the first post office opened in Dubai in 1909? This is one of the historical facts you’ll take away from a visit to the Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum Al Maktoum House. Dating back to 1896, this traditional Arabian home is one of the oldest houses in Dubai and a must-see for lovers of photography, history and architecture. With its intricately carved wooden doors, central courtyard, windtowers and window frames – not to mention commanding views over the Creek – this national monument is a perfect example of Islamic architecture. Once the official residence of Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum Al Maktoum – the grandfather of present-day ruler, Sheikh Mohammed – the house was turned into a museum in 1986 and is open to the public. Throughout its four wings you will find artefacts and historical photographs which date back to the 19 th century and visitors can take a one-hour tour which provides great insight into the development of Dubai from the 1950s to the ’60s. Paintings and a collection of old photographs capture intimate moments with the royal family, as well as historical milestones, such as the opening of the first healthcare centre and school. Heritage site advisor Abdullah Al Mutairi says: “The history of Dubai is in this house; so many sheikhs were born here. Visitors will be able to see the Dubai of the ’50s and how different it is today.” Location: Bur Dubai / Open: Daily 8am to 8.30pm Price: AED2 / Contact: 04 3937139

Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding This non-profit organisation is dedicated to offering unique activities, such as cultural breakfasts and historic tours. The 90-minute breakfast, which runs on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10am, is priced at AED60, while the lunch, which is held on Sundays and Tuesdays from 1pm, is priced at AED70. Both take place in a traditional windtower in the historic neighbourhood of the Bastakiya. Guests enjoy a traditional homemade Emirati meal of Arabic coffee and local delicacies, such as lugamat (round sweet dough balls covered in date syrup), hummous and fresh dates, while learning about the local culture and heritage of the city. General manager of the Shiekh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU), Nasif Kayed explains: “During these breakfasts and lunches, visitors sit in the courtyard and chat about customs, religion and culture. The idea is to break down barriers. And as we only take up to 40 people per sitting, the sessions are very interactive and informative.”

Alternatively you can join one of the SMCCU’s Bastakiya and Creekside tours. One of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city, a walk through Bastakiya provides an insight into days gone by. Depending on which tour you book, you’ll enjoy sights such as the Bastakiya Mosque, the textile, Gold and Spice Souks and take a ride across the Creek on an abra (water taxi). Tours last from 60 to 120 minutes, cost from AED35 to AED255 and include coffee, tea and dates. “With just 30 people at a time this tour is very interactive,” explains Kayed. “Visitors can find out more about this rich area, such as what the original houses and windtowers of Bastakiya looked like. They will also be able to learn about Islam, such as why women cover up.” Prebooking for all activities is essential and can be done online. For more information visit www.cultures.ae Location: Bastakiya / Open: Daily Sun to Thu 9am to 5pm and Sat 9am to 1pm Price: From AED35 per tour Contact: 04 3536666

Al Shaheen Xtreme Falconry Al Shaheen Xtreme Falconry is not your average falconry show because this one-of-a-kind service offers several unique experiences that make for lasting memories. Held at the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, which is a national park dedicated to preserving the beauty and biodiversity of the Arabian Desert, visitors have the opportunity to learn the basics of bird training, such as body positioning and language, as well as feeding birds and getting hands-on experience of flying a falcon. “We go against the grain of what everyone is currently offering in this field,” says events director Peter Bergh. “We want to provide a more exclusive, boutique-type experience that people can walk away from thinking, that was different, I’ve never done

that before.” This private experience is available throughout the year. Al Shaheen also offers packages in partnership with Banyan Tree Al Wadi resort in Ras Al Khaimah and visitors can look forward to afternoon hawk and eagle walks to private tours of the sanctuary. But if you’re really passionate about falconry and want to expand your knowledge about these extraordinary birds, why not join an intensive twoday, 16-hour course during which you will learn about basic training, history, species, food, hooding and how to care for the birds? The course costs AED4,000 and includes tea, water, coffee and pastries. Location: Al Ain Road Open: Daily from 8am to sunset Price: From AED225 / Contact: 04 4356550

Jumeirah Mosque One of only a few mosques in Dubai which are open to the public, the Jumeirah Mosque affords visitors a rare opportunity to learn about Emirati culture, heritage and religion in a beautiful environment. The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) hosts 75-minute tours every Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday at 10am. Modest dress is required and traditional attire can be borrowed at the mosque if necessary. While no bookings are necessary, you are requested to arrive at least 15 minutes before the beginning of the tour, giving you ample time to appreciate the beauty of this Dubai landmark. The sand-coloured building with its two minarets at the front is a fine example of Islamic architecture and makes for a great photo

Dubai Museum Wind the clock back and see Dubai as it was before the discovery of oil, at the Dubai Museum. Housed within Al Fahidi Fort, a former fortress built in 1799, this building is considered the oldest structure in Dubai and is the historic spot where leaders such as Sheikh Maktoum would have conducted government business. Start with a wander through the main building where the military museum, complete with replicas of weapons, costumes and battle scenes, is located. Continue past exhibits that showcase early Arab life, such as replicas of an authentic souk and school, musical instruments and traditional dhow boats. Don’t miss the multimedia presentation,

opportunity. General manager of the SMCCU Nasif Kayed says: “Visitors will be able to learn more about the architecture of the Fatimi era in the 1500s. They will also gain insight into how a prayer is conducted, the meaning of the word mosque, how women and men line up for prayer and what the faith encompasses.” At the end of the tour, you can take part in a Q&A session and do your bit to promote intercultural exchange and understanding. Kayed explains: “The Jumeirah Mosque visit and Q&A session are part of our ‘Open Door, Open Minds’ philosophy. No question is off limits.”

GARDEN STATE Take a stroll through the gardens, ride in a cable car or watch dolphins and seals at play

Surrounded by undulating dunes and vast open spaces, Dubai is a truly exotic desert destination. But while the emirate originally sprang from the rolling sandbanks of the Arabian Desert, it is a city of contrasts with an assortment of surroundings. Skyscrapers, manmade islands and plush five-star resorts add urban enchantment, but while the city is famed for its modern architecture, there are a variety of verdant parklands that make up the diverse landscape. Situated on the Bur Dubai-side of Dubai Creek, Creek Park doesn’t boast the most tranquil of locations. But while highways and high-rises encircle the vicinity, when you pass through the gates you’ll be transported to an oasis of calm. As you might expect, Creek Park is abundant with greenery. Like most green areas in the city, a large amount of water is used daily to maintain the vegetation and the result is 280 types of trees and flowers planted over

96 hectares of rolling lawns. In addition, rock gardens, fountains and beach terrain add to the palatial landscape and alfresco diners can often be seen picnicking under the trees or cooking at one of the many barbecue stations. Creek Park also offers a variety of fun activities for families. A cable car provides impressive views of the Dubai Creek and a t icket for t he 15 -m inute r ide can be purchased for A ED25. Meanwhile, an 18-hole mini golf course, an amphitheatre and a playground are amusing attractions for young visitors. Those seeking a more energetic experience can hire bicycles for AED30 per hour. There is also the Dubai Dolph i na r iu m, wh ich houses t ra i ned bottle-nose dolphins and four seals, which perform tricks and dances for an audience capacity of 1,250. wet & wild A water park is the best place to have family fun outdoors during the heat of the day. Concierge guides you through the UAE’s impressive cool pools

Q The month of May brings barometer-bursting temperatures so if you’re keen to cool down, we recommend you take a trip to one of the UAE's water parks. At the top of our list is Aquaventure (pictured). Located at Atlantis The Palm, Dubai, this world-famous water park boasts 42 acres of fun including blasters, speedslides, rivers, rapids, splashers and the granddaddy of water slides, the famous Leap of Faith. While Aquaventure guarantees an intense adrenaline rush, families might decide to give family-friendly water park Wild Wadi a try. In addition to being entirely navigable from the water, thanks to the fast bursts of water which jet you around the slides, this park is light on queues, which is a bonus for those with small children. And for those who don’t mind venturing further afield, an hour and a half down the road, in the east of Abu Dhabi emirate, you'll find the city of Al Ain. In January Wadi Adventure opened here and visitors can look forward to whitewater rafting, surfing and kayaking in a controlled environment. Alternatively, head to the northern emirate of Umm Al Quwain, which is home to Dreamland Aqua Park. An older park, Dreamland doesn’t quite have the same thrill factor as Wild Wadi and Aquaventure, but the journey is definitely made worthwhile by the scenic drive which takes you by the picturesque Hajar Mountains.

Aquaventure What: Dubai’s biggest water park is the sprawling, 42-acre Aquaventure complex at Atlantis, The Palm. As well as the slides, rides and splashes you’d expect from a five-star park, there is also the added bonus of a 700-metre private beach – perfect for building sand castles and escaping the excitement. Small kids: Head for the Splashers play area with climbing frames, slides, water cannons and tipping buckets. The river rides circuit is an impressive 2km of floating and fun. The Torrent River allows you to ride the waves through a lush landscape while The Rapids is a white-knuckle ring-ride for all ages. Big kids: Serious thrills begin at the mysterious Ziggurat, a pyramid-like structure at the heart of Aquaventure. Ring rides take you up and into the Ziggurat, plunging you into darkness

from time to time before you are sent hurtling down into the waters below. The Surge is a water rollercoaster in complete darkness, while Shark Attack will send you riding through a shark-filled lagoon. Note that height restrictions exist on some rides, with a threshold of 1.2 metres. Adults: If swimming with sharks sounds scary, wait until you combine that with a plunge from the top of the Ziggurat in The Leap of Faith. The 27.5-metre drop is followed by a transparent tunnel surrounded by menacing creatures of the deep. Put your faith to the test as you shoot past guitar sharks, bow mouth sharks, white tip, black tip and grey reef sharks. 1 Leap of Faith, Aquaventure 2 Whitewater rafting, Wadi Adventure

Wadi Adventure What: Based at the foot of the spectacular Jebel Hafeet mountain in Al Ain, Wadi Adventure opened in January and has quickly become a popular spot with both residents and visitors alike. It is the only park in the Middle East where visitors can try kayaking, whitewater rafting and surfing in a controlled environment. Small kids: In the surf park, the waves can be created to suit individual skill levels, allowing budding surfers to learn quickly in a safe situation. Big kids: Kayaking lessons with experienced teachers are available for those who are unsure about braving the three manmade channels, which cater to different experience levels. Adults: Whether you fancy kayaking or whitewater rafting, prepare to yell as you're propelled across the choppy waves. Guides are on hand to offer assistance but experienced guests can go it alone. When it’s time to dry off, visitors can make their way to the air park where the adventure course will have them climbing walls, negotiating high ropes, a zip line and the 14-metre falling swing. Dreamland Aqua Park

What: This established, 250,000-squaremetre centre is in Umm Al Quwain, an emirate to the north of Dubai, about an hour and a half drive from the airport. The journey is worthwhile for catching a glimpse of the UAE away from Dubai and also enjoying the extra space Dreamland offers. It may not be as five-star as Wild Wadi and Aquaventure but it has charms of its own. Small kids: Adventurers and animal lovers will enjoy exploring Dreamland’s own volcano, surrounded by hippos, a pirate ship, frog slides and an interactive play feature. There is also a dedicated Aqua Play area which has a play pool with tipping buckets, water blasters and see-saws, as well as swirling slides. There is a Dream Stream (lazy river) with inf latable rings and Family Raft Ride too. Away from the water, meanwhile, there is a small selection of animals in a mini zoo on site.

Big kids: The giant wave pool can get pretty rough, while the Twister ride features a 40-metre slide before falling down what can only be described as a ‘plughole’. The Kamikaze is fast, while not too furious, and Slide 5 promises a secret surprise. Wild Wadi What: Located between the Jumeirah Beach Hotel and Burj Al Arab, Wild Wadi is a themed water park with fun rides and slides for all ages. Looking like a lost island oasis, the park is based on the journeys of a sailor named Juha. The legend goes that Juha’s dhow was hit by a storm and washed up on an enchanted island, where his family and crew created the rides you see at Wild Wadi. Small kids: Breaker’s Bay is one of the largest wave pools in the Middle East and is suitable for strong swimmers as well as youngsters who can enjoy the sensation of the tide. If that sounds too energetic, Juha’s Journey is a long, lazy river which will gently take you on a relaxing ride. Flood River is a variation on the theme, with surges of water that create high waves and rapids. Younger children will also love Juha’s Dhow and Lagoon,

a large play area with more than 100 attractions and plenty of clever ways to get wet and keep cool. Big kids: Older children can ride the Master Blasters – a complex of rubber-ring rides and slides that even go uphill. One of only four such rides in the world, the Wipeout and Riptide flowriders create an artificial breaking wave which is perfect for learning how to bodyboard or kneeboard. Adults: Finally, for the really brave is the famous Jumeirah Sceirah. The highest slide outside North America, riders hurtle down the 33-metre drop at up to 80kmh. You’ll have to be at least 1.1 metres tall and fearless to ride the Sceirah. Q When it comes to holidaying in Dubai, every day brings a new high-octane adventure. From skimming the skyline in a seaplane to scaling the desert dunes in a 4x4, there is never a dull moment in this city. But if you’ve travelled to the top of the world’s tallest tower, navigated the black, blue, red and green runs of Ski Dubai, and plunged down Aquaventure’s Leap of Faith, you might be keen to bring the adrenaline down a notch. Throughout the emirate and in almost every five-star hotel you will find luxury spas which offer everything from traditional massages to hi-tech facials. Better still, the majority of Dubai’s spas have carefully crafted menus which cater to every type of visitor. So whether you’re an on-the-go business traveller who needs to slot 60 minutes of no-holes-barred pampering into a hectic work schedule, or a pair of lazy honeymooners looking for the perfect spa treatment for two, there is something to suit your needs. While it would be impossible to list every one of Dubai’s top spas (simply put, there are too many) we’ve rounded up a few of the best and road tested their top treatments for different types of travellers.

la dolce vita A world of pizza, pasta and panettone awaits you in Dubai’s Italian eateries

Q w o r d s b y c at h e r i n e l a n g l e y

Italy has long been honoured for its rich culture and history. After all, it was the fountainhead of the mighty Roman Empire, Roman Catholic Church, Humanism and Renaissance, and while we’re on the subject, if it wasn’t for famed Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci we’d never have had the Mona Lisa. Bottom line, Italy is famous for everything from fast cars to fashion houses and a lot in between. But for the foodies among us, its crowning glory has to be that it’s the birthplace of all manner of culinary delights. The good news is that you don’t need to trek all the way to ‘the boot’ to experience traditional Italian fare because Dubai’s fivestar hotels are abundant with world-class eateries, which take inspiration from the beautiful country. Armani/Ristorante, one of the Armani Hotel Dubai’s high-end restaurants, takes its lead from gastro hotspots such as Sicily and Rome. Alternatively, Rococo at Sofitel Dubai Jumeirah Beach is the perfect place to head for authentic, yet contemporary combinations which ooze Latino flare. Other top choices include Ossigeno at Le Royal Méridien Beach Resort & Spa and La Veranda at Jumeirah Beach Hotel. Returning visitors will be pleased to see that old favourites such as Splendido at The Ritz-Carlton Dubai are still cooking up a storm. Read on for our top selection of Italian eateries. Buon appetito!

Armani/Ristorante Giorgio Armani’s first foray into the world of hospitality has brought with it a new collection of culinary hotspots. At the top of the list is Armani/Ristorante. Italian-born head chef Alessandro Salvatico has done an outstanding job of crafting a menu which combines old-fashioned favourites with contemporary innovations. Begin with the beef carpaccio and tartar. The ingredients are so fresh they almost jump off the plate. Of course, the test of any good Italian restaurant is its pasta and we’re pleased to report that the black squid

ink tagliolini with scallops and mussels gets the thumbs up. For those who don’t want to go down the pasta route, look out for the halibut fillet with cappuccino sauce. Carnivores should direct their attention to the grilled Angus beef fillet. For the ultimate indulgence, traditional classics such as lemon parfait and tiramisu win points for presentation, but we urge you to try The Sphere, which is served with vanilla cream, violette crème brulée and cassis sorbet. Italian-born chef Alessandro Salvatico has done an outstanding job of crafting a menu which combines old-fashioned favourites with contemporary innovations Rococo A taste of the Mediterranean awaits you at Rococo. This chic Italian restaurant, located at the Sofitel Dubai Jumeirah Beach, offers authentic Italian cuisine including homemade pasta, traditional Mediterranean salads and pizza baked in a wood-fired oven. There is also a scrumptious selection of meat dishes, including Angus beef carpaccio with 24-month aged parmesan cheese and slow-cooked New Zealand lamb rack. Nestled away on the first floor opposite The Hub, Rococo is a popular spot for romantic diners seeking an intimiate culinary experience. Atmospheric lighting coupled with live music from a violinist creates a warm ambience that’s hard to beat. With views of The Walk – Jumeirah Beach Residence and further ahead, the Arabian Gulf, diners can take advantage of the picturesque scenery as they enjoy some truly authentic flavours of Italy. Ossigeno It’s obvious from the moment that you enter Ossigeno that this is no ordinary Italian restaurant. From the sleek minimalist setting to the flair and imagination of the cuisine, every aspect of the restaurant radiates a chic European style. Located at Le Royal Méridien Beach Resort & Spa, the mood at Ossigeno is lavish but low key and the friendly staff, who are on hand to guide you through the delectable menu, do an excellent job of creating a warm and welcoming ambience. The menu takes it cue from southern Italy and starters such as peppered mussels with garlic and tomato sauce and marinated baby octopus set the bar high from the start. Fortunately the main menu is just as palatable with pasta creations such as linguine with calamari and spaghetti with Canadian lobster surpassing expectation. While the pasta dishes are the star attraction of this stylish eatery, both the grilled organic salmon fillet and the corn-fed chicken cacciatore are fine choices for those who are not in the mood for carbs.

Those with a sweet tooth are in for a treat because the dessert menu brings its own charm. While everything is delicious, when it comes to the top spot it’s a toss up between the traditional Sicilian cannolo, which is filled with ricotta and candy fruits, and the bitter chocolate flan, which comes with orange sauce. Location: Le Royal Méridien Beach Resort & Spa Open: Sunday to Friday 7pm to midnight Tel: 04 3995555

La Veranda A pleasant trattoria located at Jumeirah Beach Hotel, La Veranda offers Italian cuisine with the option to dine alfresco by the beach. Since it first opened its doors in 2006, this Mediterranean-inspired eatery has been a firm favourite with families due to its laidback atmosphere and friendly vibe. While Dubai’s five-star eateries are usually identified by their complicated culinary creations, La Veranda takes a different approach, serving unfussy cuisine, but doing it with style. Generously topped pizzas, such as the tonno e cipolla, which is a tantalising combination of tomato sauce, mozzarella, tuna, onion and oregano, are served alongside f lavourful lasagnes and perfectly prepared salads. Relaxing views of gentle water lapping the luxury yachts moored in the adjacent marina are an added bonus to this very enjoyable restaurant experience. The upside is that you’ll be pleasantly surprised when you arrive, because this trendy New York-style eatery is a firm favourite on the Dubai fine-dining scene. Regional brand director for Montblanc Joe Nahhas shares his tips for a stylish stay in the city

1

I’m originally from Lebanon but have been living in Dubai for six years. It was the job that brought me here but I was also attracted by the mix of cultures that reflects my upbringing. It didn’t take long before I felt at home and when my family arrived here I instantly felt settled. My favourite time of year in Dubai is autumn. The weather is perfect and I really enjoy going to the beach with my family. I think one of my favourite memories of Dubai is just resting on the beach and watching the sun set over the sea. Dubai is a city which is famed for its amazing restaurants and my favourite places to eat include La Petite Maison, which is at Dubai International Financial Centre, Rivington Grill at Souk Al Bahar and Chinese eatery Hakkasan, which you’ll find at Jumeirah Emirates Towers. Both the service and the food at these places is excellent. That said,

1 At the Top 2 Hakkasan

When it comes to shopping, Dubai is legendary. It has become a regional hub for tourism and shopping and I would say it is the Milan of the Middle East

I regularly go to quiet, low-key cafés such as the Lime Tree Café & Kitchen. The or ig inal branch opened on Jumeira Beach Road but they also have locations in Al Quoz and Media City as well as at Ibn Battuta Mall. I highly recommend dropping in for lunch. The best sporting event of the year is the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. It’s such a buzz to sit so close to the world’s most amazing tennis players as they thrash it out on the courts. It’s definitely one to buy tickets for if you’re in Dubai when the tournament is on. When it comes to retail therapy, Dubai is legendary. It has become a regional hub for tourism and shopping and I would say it is the Milan of the

Middle East. My favourite mall is The Dubai Mall which has over 1,000 stores and is where I would recommend visiting if a person is looking for designer shops. I also like Mercato, which is a smaller mall located on Jumeira Beach Road. Despite the arrival of bigger shopping centres throughout the years, it has kept its charm. When I have guests out to visit I like to take them for a stroll around Madinat Jumeirah, followed by afternoon tea at Al Qasr, which is very scenic. I would then take them to At the Top, which is located on the 124th floor of the Burj Khalifa. The views of the city from this observation deck are outstanding and the best in the city.

ARTS & CRAFT SOUK

Located in Times Square shopping mall, this small market sells handcrafted jewellery, accessories and contemporary UAE art.

Shisha, sometimes referred to as hubbly bubbly, is a water pipe used for smoking flavoured tobacco and can be found at cafés and bars across the city. This is an authentic and traditional souvenir that can be easily bought in Dubai. Tobacco and coals are also readily available. The khanjar is the traditional dagger of Oman, carried by men in a sheath, decorated with silver and worn on a belt similarly decorated. Ornamental and sometimes very elaborate daggers can be found in Dubai’s souks; a great souvenir reflecting the region’s customs. Gold is popular with tourists visiting Dubai. The Gold Souk is a must for those looking to buy jewellery at affordable prices. Dubai’s souks have a huge variety of original and authentic souvenirs such as carpets, calligraphy art, scarves, Arabic oudh (perfume), wooden camels, jewellery boxes and glass perfume bottles.

From September to May purpose-built racing dhows take to the water for the annual traditional dhow racing season. Not only is this a keenly observed sporting event, it is also a celebration of the country's culture and heritage. The traditional dhow sailing race season comes to an end this month and the 60-foot sailing race will take place on May 26. For more information visit www.dimc.ae

Struggling to find a tee time or looking for an alternative challenge? The UAE has other excellent courses to feed your need. The Abu Dhabi Golf Club (02 5588990) is managed by Troon Golf and located just ten minutes from the airport. This superb, 27-hole championship course has excellent facilities and a distinctive clubhouse shaped like a falcon. The course itself is pleasantly tough with many water hazards to negotiate. Also in the capital is the Saadiyat Beach Golf Club (02 5578000), designed by Gary Player and the Gulf’s only ocean course. Heading north, Tower Links (07 2278555) in Ras Al Khaimah is a tricky 18-hole course that meanders through a mangrove swamp and has the Hajar Mountains as a backdrop. The back nine holes are also floodlit, meaning you can make the most of your journey.

Go local Dubai is abundant with Arabic restaurants but for authentic Emirati cuisine we recommend the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. The centre offers a variety of programmes which can be experienced over a spread of traditional Emirati dishes. Local cuisine is uncomplicated and relies on meat, fish and rice, enhanced by the creative use of spices and other aromatic flavourings. Traditional dishes include ouzi, which is a whole roast lamb stuffed with fragrant rice, and balaleet – a fine egg pasta with onion.

wining and dining

Although the UAE is a Muslim country, alcohol is permitted in several emirates including Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Wine, Champagne and spirits are available from most five-star hotels and as a tourist you are free to enjoy the lively bar scene that Dubai has become famous for. However, be warned, there is zero tolerance to drink driving. One sip is one sip too many. Likewise being drunk in public is a criminal offence. Both crimes are treated seriously and are punishable with a fine and in more extreme cases imprisonment.

Your five-star concierge is now available online at www.conciergedubai.com Find everything you need to book and plan your next stay.

SMOKE SIGNALS Smoking shisha (hubbly bubbly) is very popular in Dubai. The Middle Eastern water pipe, which is thought to have originated around 500 years ago, purifies and cools the smoke from flavoured tobacco heated on top of the pipe by coals. The most popular flavours are apple, mint, strawberry, apricot and grape. Although relaxing and sociable, estimates suggest that an hour of shisha smoking equates to inhaling 50 cigarettes. However, if you’re after an authentic experience, smoking shisha is a must. Just remember not to inhale too deeply and to share your shisha among friends. This is a social tradition and to be enjoyed in groups or couples.
