Dubai has risen from the desert to become one of the world’s foremost destinations for luxury. The sweeping sands of the dunes once dominated a landscape which is now defined by towering skyscrapers and iconic structures. Dubai owes much to its desert heritage where Bedouin tribes forged the beginnings of the thriving metropolis that is Dubai today. Explore the emirate’s fascinating desert roots in our photo essay on page 36.

A well-conceived exhibition offers a wonderful opportunity to showcase incredible ideas. Many months of hard work, attention to detail and passion are embodied in the innovative products and exclusive pieces presented. Baselworld - the World Watch and Jewellery Show is one of the finest examples of a modern luxury-goods exhibition boasting collections from the world’s most renowned jewellers. A key date in the international watch and jewellery industry calendar, the influential show sets the pace for the market for the rest of the year. It’s where many of the high-end watch and jewellery brands debut their most prized new collections before they are launched around the world. Baselworld dates back to 1917 with the opening of the first Schweizer Mustermesse Basel (MUBA) retail fair which initially incorporated a watch and jewellery section. Over the years this element grew until a Swiss watch show was held in a dedicated pavilion in 1931. Subsequent incarnations of the exhibition led to the birth of Basel in 1983. It was renamed Baselworld Watch and Jewellery Show in 2003 and the following year a new hall complex was introduced capable of accommodating more than 89,000 visitors who flock to this esteemed event.

Boucheron Khépri à Secret French luxury jeweller Boucheron unveiled a beautifully intricate timepiece which takes influences from some of the most sophisticated techniques used in traditional watch design. The concept of automated art is revisited with this extraordinary piece. Founder Frédéric Boucheron famously entertained

customers at his first boutique in Paris by opening a little box to reveal a small decorative bird hidden inside. Bringing the concept back to life in the new timepiece, a glittering scarab houses this stunning watch which is only revealed upon opening its gilded wings. The smooth movement occurs with a little pressure on the head of the ornate creature fashioned from a blue cabochon sapphire. Two diamond-trimmed upper wings sweep back to show the smaller wings underneath set with shimmering diamonds and blue sapphires. The fine timepiece within is an incredible feat of invention from the Maison’s craftsmen who have ensured 40 components fit into a miniature body without hampering function or the overall aesthetic.

This impressive timepiece features a flying tourbillon at 12 o’clock, flying carrousel at 6 o’clock and a date display at 3 o’clock. A simpler time Despite the harsh conditions, small populations have been making the UAE desert their home for thousands of years Words by

Charlot t e Van de n Broucq ue

With scorching summer temperatures of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit and sand dunes stretching in every direction as far as the eye could see, it’s hard to believe that people have lived in UAE desert since the third millennium BCE. Before the now-cosmopolitan cities of the seven emirates emerged in the middle of the last century, the wild landscape offered few resources to its inhabitants. The adjacent Arabian Gulf with its fish supplies, small herds of gazelle indigenous to this region, the freshwater springs of Jebel Hafeet – the UAE’s tallest mountain – and a number of small oases scattered throughout the desert were all they had to go on. It was evidently enough, though, to sustain a resilient nomadic population who managed to farm dates and vegetables as well as raise animals on the arid land.

1

34

2

For hundreds of years the native Bani Yas tribe navigated its way through this harsh environment and created an organised and successful population with over 20 subsections. Known as Bedouin, meaning ‘desert dwellers’, the tribe was originally based at Liwa Oasis 150 kilometres from the city of Abu Dhabi. Matar Al-Mansoori’s ancestors have been living as Bedouin in this area for centuries and he too grew up in this fascinating culture. Now the CEO of Al Badeyah Tourism, his aim is to keep the UAE’s heritage, culture and traditions alive and invite others to experience them at an authentic desert safari camp in Abu Dhabi emirate. “I grew up in a typical Bedouin community that remains close to traditional ways of life where people cannot live without their heritage” he reveals. While Al-Mansoori spent term time attending school away from the community he spent the weekends and holidays back in the camp. “I used to spend my summer vacation in Liwa Oasis driving my parents to visit our farm in the desert to collect daily camel milk for our house. In the morning I used to drive to my parents’ oasis to clean and water the palm trees and to gather dates in the summer.”

Speaking of the Bedouin life that his ancestors would have known, he says: “Life was hard in the past as it was difficult to grow crops, but they were able to plant palm trees, grasses and some fruits in specific places. Diet consisted mainly of fresh fish, dry fish, camel, goat and sheep meat, rabbits and birds but they were sometimes able to supplement this with bread, rice and other foods that were brought by sea traders from neighbouring countries.” Accommodation was simple and consisted of palm-frond barasti settlements made of mud, leaves and goat

hair. In the unbearable heat of the summer the community retreated under the shade of palms growing around the oases to keep cool. Legend has it that while on a hunting trip a group of Bedouin from the Bani Yas tribe living at Liwa Oasis in the heart of the desert stalked a deer all the way to the shoreline. What they found here was to change the course of history and create the beginning of life as we know it in the UAE today. The area was made up of many islands with huge mangroves and a plentiful supply of fresh water. In honour of the legend that brought them to this place it

was named Abu Dhabi, which translates as ‘father of the deer’. Slowly but surely, more and more members of the Bani Yas tribe began to move here, including the Al Nahyan family, which still rules Abu Dhabi today. While Bedouin life might not be as difficult in areas as it once was, Al-Mansoori reveals: “Those living in these communities today tend to strike a balance between their traditional way of life and modern conveniences. Generally speaking there has been a big change in the lifestyle of Bedouin over the last 41 years. Most now live a more comfortable life with modern luxuries such as mobile phones, 4x4s and caravan houses in the desert complete with air conditioning and solar energy for lighting.” With easy access to food for animals available at nearby markets the way of life has certainly become less precarious but the old culture still remains. “In the morning Bedouin will check their palm tree farms, which are near to their houses and then spend their time in the afternoon in the desert looking after their camels and goats,” says Al-Mansoori. With modern life beckoning he adds: “Many former Bedouin now live in cities but they still maintain links to their history and heritage. Their children now go to schools, universities and work in the public and private sector, but they’re still proud to keep their traditional life which they inherited from their parents, grandparents and ancestors.”

Take a dip with hundreds of sharks, speed over towering desert dunes or dive from a plane with some of the world’s most iconic sights in view. With a host of natural and manmade treasures lending a stunning setting to the high-octane encounters on offer, Dubai is fast becoming a must-visit destination for thrill seekers. The unique coastal desert location provides extreme sports enthusiasts with endless options to entertain whether at sea, on sand or in the sky. In recent years an appetite for adrenaline-inducing adventures has grown considerably and the diverse selection of activities on offer means there is something to suit all regardless of skill level. Concierge explores the amazing encounters on offer and speaks to local instructors and enthusiasts for the essentials on how visitors can participate.

Scuba diving From wreck diving off the coast of Palm Jumeirah to diving with sharks and stingray in The Dubai Mall, the city is a playground for underwater explorers. “Diving offers a massive variety of options and conditions for people to choose from. This is what makes it so thrilling and endlessly exciting for me. If you want a cool wreck dive, off the coast of Atlantis The Palm, Dubai is the place to be. If you want a coral reef dive, Fujairah is there for you. If you want a guaranteed sighting of sharks, we’ll throw you into The Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo,” says Sam Thomas, instructor at Al Boom Diving. Al Boom Diving offers PADI training courses from beginner all the way through to instructor level as well as pleasure dives for certified openwater divers. The Dubai Aquarium diving experience is its newest and

most popular. “Not many places in the world can 100 percent guarantee scuba diving with 100 sharks on any day of the week they choose. All of Al Boom Diving’s PADI instructors have an incredible amount of experience. Safety is our first priority, fun is our second. If you follow the rules, scuba diving is perfectly safe and will open up a whole new world of experiences,” says Thomas.

Skydiving Mention ‘extreme sports’ and one of the first that comes to most minds is skydiving. Created in the 18th century and used first by the military, skydiving was officially recognised as an international sport in 1952 and has since become one of the world’s most admired activities. “What I find thrilling is the rush you get from throwing yourself out of a plane and relying on a parachute to stop you falling at 120 miles per hour towards the ground. After your first few jumps you usually find that on top of that excitement, you have found a new sport with limitless possibilities which includes jumping with friends to competing at a world championship level,” says Max Bruffell, instructor at Skydive Dubai. Skydive Dubai is the UAE’s premier skydive centre with locations in Dubai Marina and the desert close to Dubai. Jumpers leap out of a plane at 5,000 feet and freefall for around one minute before the parachute is opened. Non-experienced guests jump in tandem with an instructor while professionals can explore a range of options including freeflying, formation skydiving, wingsuit flying and canopy piloting. “Skydiving is unbelievably popular with visitors. We work hard to make the whole experience comfortable. Safety-wise we use the latest most up-to-date and wellmaintained equipment. We also have a strict weight limit. In five years of jumping I have only seen two people who wouldn’t do it again,” says. To make the experience even more memorable divers can jump with photographers or videographers. Although slots are often booked up weeks in advance, Skydive Dubai also operates an on-the-day waiting list for spontaneous visitors.

Bungee jumping The latest addition to Dubai’s extreme sports’ portfolio is bungee jumping. The daring sport was invented on Pentecost Island in the South Pacific where young men jumped from platforms with their ankles tied to vines as a test of courage. To this day it’s still a popular challenge for intrepid individuals worldwide. Gravity Zone operates the Middle East’s first permanent bungee. Scott Mathers, jump master at Gravity Zone, says: “Speed, adrenaline and unbelievable feats of human ingenuity are three things that describe both Dubai and bungee jumping. When it comes to heights, Dubai is equalled by none so what better place to experience the ultimate thrill of bungee jumping than here, surrounded by some of the most iconic buildings in the world that flash before your eyes at a terrifying pace?” Jumpers fall from the 160-foot-high platform at 60 miles per hour. After signing a waiver, they are equipped with the latest safety equipment, attached to a rubber cord by the ankles and raised up to the platform in a cage to await the jump master’s countdown. With Burj Khalifa in the background and Burj Al Arab on the horizon, bungee jumping in Dubai is a memorable experience. Bungee jumping really is about facing your fear and our staff are there to help you,” Mathers adds.

Dune driving Dubai’s desert location makes dune driving one of the most popular adrenaline sports for locals and tourists. The sport uses 4x4s and the aim is for the vehicles to surf over sand dunes, providing a real thrill for drivers and passengers as well as a great sense of freedom. “Nothing is as exciting as the desert. The desert imposes no limitation on driving range and difficulty. Dunes can be from five to 150 metres high and from 10 to 80 degrees steep,” says desert sport enthusiast Alexander Vink. There are a number of key places to visit just inland from Dubai

such as ‘Big Red’, a 300-foot-high sand dune which is as steep as a black ski run. “Liwa is the big boys’ playground and is the ultimate spot for dune bashing. It’s about a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Dubai and when you have a free weekend it’s worth it,” Vink recommends. Dune driving is a thrilling yet challenging sport that requires drivers to understand their vehicles and respond to the terrain. Steering correctly, deflating tyres to the appropriate level and keeping an eye on tyre pressure are vital to avoid getting stuck, Vink explains. Several companies such as Desert Safari Dubai run tours for visitors on a daily basis. After taking in key highlights such as Big Red, tours usually find a stopping place with a great view to enjoy the sunset and end the day with a barbecue feast, shisha smoking and entertainment from traditional dancers.

Kite surfing Kite surfing is a unique water sport that enables individuals to harness the power of the wind through the way they balance their bodies. Using only a board, to which feet are bound and a large kite, kite surfers can use the wind to reach speeds of up to 50 knots, travel hundreds of miles and perform jaw-dropping tricks. “Nothing compares to the feeling of speed and flight across the water. Kite surfing is the culmination of several sports: wake boarding, wind surfing, surfing, kiting and para-gliding. The freedom you have is exhilarating,” says Osama Shihab, an instructor at Kitesurf Dubai and kite surfing competitor. Dubai is an optimal location for the sport because it’s almost always warm, the views are unparalleled and most importantly, the wind is low to medium virtually all year round. Recognising the value that the sport adds to the industry, the Dubai Municipality has allotted special kite surfing zones throughout the city. At Kitesurf Dubai, Shihab teaches students to become independent kite surfers through a 12-hour training programme covering everything from setting up equipment and safety procedures to powering up and controlling the kite. “Our team comprises qualified and experienced kite surfing instructors. We have been in the business since 2006 and we use the latest equipment and teaching techniques to get you riding quickly and safely,” he adds.

Magnificent medley Expect the unexpected from an evening at Dubai’s live entertainment sensation MusicHall

56

MUS I C HA L L / E XP E R IE NCE

The stage is set, the house lights are dimmed and an excited murmur rises from the gathered melÊe as everyone settles into their seats. Performers wait in the wings while final preparations are made. As the first notes from the band sound, the much-anticipated opening act takes to the stage to the delight of a crowd that has no idea what to expect. Each audience member has eagerly snapped up a ticket without any prior knowledge of the acts on the bill. It’s the promise of a thrilling spectacle rather than the reputation of a particular artist that sees guests flock to the show where the element of surprise is in itself one of the star attractions. This is MusicHall in Dubai where anything can happen. As a concept, the origins of music hall can be found in the coffee houses and taverns of 18th century Britain. These meeting places provided the opportunity for men to dine and do business in a convivial atmosphere. Musicians and singers entertained audiences who were given the chance to join in the festivities and sing along. Music halls rapidly grew in popularity and attracted an eclectic assortment of performers from comedians and dancers to impersonators and mime artists.

57

Music halls then moved into theatres capable of accommodating large crowds flocking to see the variety on show. Akin to American Vaudeville, rousing acts entertained in lively venues while audiences enjoyed food, wine and tobacco in the auditorium. Music halls were not defined by one specific style, instead deriving a unique identity from the variety concept that often saw them become an overnight success. The First World War added to the popularity of the music hall style as artists and composers put on patriotic performances to boost morale. The years after the war sadly saw a decline in the art form as developments in radio and cinema provided alternative forms of entertainment. Music hall also struggled to compete with the onset of jazz, swing and big-band dance music. In recent years the music hall style has been enjoying a welcome revival in this region

thanks to the efforts of passionate author, compose and producer Michel Elefteriades. The launch of MusicHall in Dubai earlier this year has further cemented its status as an evening’s entertainment not to be missed. Visitors and residents have embraced the concept, vying for the coolest tickets in town. The bill promises around 15 acts on stage each night, drawn from an incredible selection of genres and locations. Anything goes from reggae to rock and Latino to funk ensuring there’s something to suit all tastes. There is a firm emphasis on fun and the only requirement from audiences is that they are open to entirely new experiences. Summing up the concept’s creative inspiration, Elefteriades says: “There is no specific formula. I am very intuitive and my artistic selection patterns are under perpetual, unpredictable modification. The main difference

between MusicHall and the early styles of the old music hall is that we only present very professional musical acts from different cultures around the world.” MusicHall’s first incarnation came in Beirut in 2003, launched by Elefteriades Productions. The highly entertaining evenings of varied live musical acts were a runaway hit with local audiences and quickly gathered widespread acclaim. “I was looking for a venue in Beirut where the artists who were signed to my music label could perform in good conditions. I decided to acquire my own theatre when I realised that such a venue did not exist in Beirut,” says Elefteriades who is of Greek and Lebanese origin. Since its inception the 800-seater venue has played host to a flurry of international talent such as renowned British violinist Nigel Kennedy, French pop singer Olivia Ruiz and noted Cuban jazz pianist Roberto Fonseca. The venue has also played a central role in fostering talent and provided a springboard for acts such as the Chehade Brothers, hugely successful Arabic musicians who have been honoured with a BBC world music award. A MusicHall Beirut regular over the past decade has been Jordanian music star Nahawand. “Definitely my favourite act!” recalls Elefteriades. “This great diva made her comeback on the MusicHall stage at the age of 80 in 2003. I wrote and composed songs for her and we started touring the world.” Stepping away from his own carefully considered selection of MusicHall artists, if the music mogul could have any act living or dead on his stage he would opt for singing icons Edith Piaf, Elvis Presley or Tom Waits. “They come from very different cultures with very different styles but they have one thing in common: they are all mesmerising artists,” says Elefteriades.

MUS I C HA L L / E XP E R IE NCE

In true Dubai style the city’s MusicHall venue is housed in one of the world’s most breathtaking five-star hotels. Jumeirah Zabeel Saray provides a stunning location on Palm Jumeirah for this exciting evening’s entertainment. “It’s a beautiful venue and perfect for our shows. It’s also an amazing space for clients and for the artists,” says Elefteriades who brought his concept to Dubai in January. Capable of accommodating up to 1,000 guests, plush scarlethued interiors perfectly set the scene. In addition to the live music, visitors can enjoy gourmet meals served on relaxing sofas or indulge in refreshing drinks and delicious finger food at the bar. Since opening its doors the venue has brought an incredible range of acts to entertain sell-out crowds. From Cuban rhythms to Greek and Russian folk music there has been an overwhelming selection to sample. contemporary music and international sounds are played. The evenings are laid-back and fun occasions where guests are encouraged to dance and sing the night away. Legendary Cuban band Campo Alegre was a recent Dubai highlight as MusicHall welcomed the famed backing band for leading Cuban singer Serena Gonzalez. Andalusian singer José Gálvez also gave a rousing performance that culminated in an elated audience dancing on the top of couches to the rhythms of flamenco favourites. The very idea that underpins MusicHall suggests there is no such thing as a typical fan of this particular style of evening out. Instead

there is something to suit everyone in an interactive experience where the audience’s overall character feeds into the show as it unfolds. For that reason, Dubai is seen as suited particularly well to the genre. “The more taste and culture a person has, the more layers that person will be able to discover in the MusicHall show. This is what I call cultural entertainment. The very cosmopolitan crowd in Dubai for me is very well suited to MusicHall and its notion of cultural eclectic diversity. I put the train on the rails in Beirut 10 years ago. Its first station was Dubai and I hope that this concept of live entertainment will continue to travel.”

Local largesse

Hospitality is a cornerstone of Arabian culture and nowhere is it more apparent than in the traditions surrounding food in the UAE

The Arab world is renowned for the hospitality of its people who consider it a duty to extend the hand of welcome to strangers. To Arabs, the level of courtesy and generosity shown towards a guest is a direct reflection of a person’s character and it has long been customary to shelter weary travellers and provide them with a night’s rest and food. It’s a tradition that dates back to the days of the Bedouin, when it was not out of the ordinary for people to undertake great journeys across the desert and throw themselves on the mercy of local tribes if their supplies ran dry. Today, the nomadic way of life has largely died out, but many of the customs and traditions that derive from those times still carry weight in modern UAE society. Notable

among these is the tendency for Arabian hosts to serve more food than the average diner could possibly eat. Even at Arabic restaurants, visitors are far more likely to find the portions over-generous than insubstantial. This is nothing to do with a local preference for enormous portions – the reason lies in a general belief that showering a guest with food is an important part of making them welcome and displaying your largesse as a host. As a result, family meals in Arabic households are usually large-scale affairs, particularly lunch, which has traditionally been the most important meal of the day in this region and is generally the preferred meal to invite guests to. On a Friday, the Islamic day of rest, the whole family will usually gather round the table after noon prayers to share a meal of meat, vegetables and salads. This will normally be accompanied by Arabic bread, dips, including hummous and moutabel and other mezze dishes such as sambousek (pastry stuffed with meat and pine kernels) or kalmata olives and halloumi cheese.

Historically, however, people of the Arabian Peninsula were limited to foods they could source and grow in the desert and relied heavily on a diet of dates, wheat, barley, rice and what little meat they could find or raise. Today, of course, the UAE has diversified its culinary traditions and is now known for its rich and varied dining scene, with no end of gourmet restaurants offering cuisines from the far corners of the world. Within the category of Arabic food alone, there is a huge range of national cuisines to choose from, including Moroccan, Persian, Omani and, most popularly, Lebanese. There is also a specific category of food unique to this country, though it’s harder to find restaurants that serve it. In Dubai, visitors can book a table at Awtar restaurant at Grand Hyatt Dubai and try some local Arabic dishes. The authentic ambience and tastefully designed interiors make for a unique experience. Generally speaking, though, most Arabic restaurants here offer a mix of Lebanese and Persian cuisine, the vast majority of which stays true to the age-old tradition of serving incredibly generous portions and making every effort to ensure that their guest feels full and happy.

Madroubat al-dijaj – the national dish of the UAE, this is a rich dip made with boiled chicken, Emirati spices and crushed wheat served with Arabic bread. Harees – a popular local recipe, this hearty dish contains chunks of tender lamb, served in a thick, white stew. Biryani samak – an Emirati variation on the popular Indian rice dish cooked with kingfish and spices. Saloona badawiah – a wholesome stew made from root vegetables, tomatoes and lamb. This dish was traditionally served to guests visiting a Bedouin camp. Rigag – similar to a French crêpe, this wafer-thin bread is often served with meat or white cheese.

Crisp linen tablecloths, polished cutlery and tantalising aromas are some of the wonderful extras which make eating out a welcome change from our everyday dining routines. Increasingly, restaurateurs strive to find ways to add an extra special sense of occasion to the overall experience. With an eye on sophisticated traditions of the early 20 th century such as supper clubs and cabaret lounges, many venues offer a host of entertaining extras to make for a memorable evening. Early incarnations of dining out are to be found in the experiences of weary travellers who would break long journeys by stopping at inns where meals were served. The French later took the concept far beyond these functional attitudes to food. Initially a preserve of the upper classes, dining out became a marker of social standing as members of high society vied to be seen at exclusive establishments. During the 1920s and ’30s an entertainment element was added to proceedings. Diners were treated to an eclectic selection of cabaret-style performances to accompany the fine food. With the onset of hectic daily schedules and faster-paced working lives, the restaurant experience was paired back to focus on the food and satisfy demands of busy diners. However recent trends are turning back the clock to offer guests the chance to combine social activities in one venue. A growing number of Dubai restaurants promise an elaborate evening of music, art, thrilling performances and stunning surroundings as the perfect pairing to delectable dishes. Enjoy a feast for all the senses at one of Dubai’s amazing eateries.

supperclub Dubai Supper clubs first became popular during the 1930s in Britain and the US. The concept is currently enjoying something of a revival marked by its first foray into the Middle East. Launched 20 years ago, Amsterdam’s world-famous supperclub chain is bringing its blend of fine food and entertainment to these shores this month. “There will be two intimate chef’s tables on the first floor. The Salle Neige is the heart of the venue and will play centre stage to the evening’s entertainment. The gold-dappled Salle D’Or is the luxurious dining and bar area,” says Yassin Matbouly, CEO and partner of supperclub MENA. Fine food is paired with a selection of thrilling performances from acrobats, musicians and artists. “It’s a restaurant, lounge and gallery rolled into one. Dubai was an obvious choice for the first supperclub in the region at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray on Palm Jumeirah. It was a perfect fit. A great concept in a spectacular location,” says Matbouly. Some of Dubai’s malls are very big. To save time, pick up a map at the entrance so you can find the stores you want to visit quickly. In most malls similar outlets are grouped together. For a quiet and leisurely shopping experience, visit Dubai’s malls throughout the week to avoid the weekend crowds. When shopping in the traditional souks, be prepared to haggle. Vendors expect it. Before buying gold or visiting the Gold Souk, find out the current market price of gold from your hotel concierge to ensure that you do not pay over the odds. Some malls specialise in particular kinds of shopping, for example, home furnishings, luxury labels or high-street brands. Decide what you want from your shopping trip and pick the right mall for you.

Dubai has long been associated with gold. The largest gold trading centre in the Middle East, the story began over a century ago when the emirate opened a modest marketplace by Dubai Creek. Following these humble beginnings, the souk grew to become one of the largest in the world. Today the souk has been modernised and while the haphazard shacks and oil lamps of yesteryear have been replaced by shiny shop faces and neon lights, this historic spot is still a tantalising introduction to the Arabian world.

Enjoy an Emirati breakfast or lunch and chat freely with local volunteers about the life and culture in the UAE.

The falcon is not only a national symbol of the UAE but a majestic bird that has played a significant role in the country's development. The impressive predators were crucial to early Bedouin life as they strived to carve out an existence in the harsh desert conditions. Falcons were trained to hunt for food. Teaching the birds was a fascinating process that saw a close bond form between handler and bird. The same is true today although the birds are used purely for sport. Annual falcon championships are hugely popular and sees falcons purchased and trained for the duration of the hunting season before the birds are once again returned to the wild. Today the importance of the falcon to UAE culture and history is seen in many examples as the bird is represented on banknotes, official documents, paintings and architecture.

Museums

History in the making The earliest known habitation in this part of the world dates back as far as 5500 BCE. However, it was in 1971, when Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi's ruler from 1966 to 2004, and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai from 1958 to 1990, set the wheels in motion with their neighbouring sheikhdoms, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ajman (Ras Al Khaimah joined in 1972) to form an alliance. Prior to this, the seven emirates had lived in relative harmony, united through a protectorate treaty with Great Britain, which earned them the name the Trucial States. It was a successful partnership, but in 1968 the United Kingdom ended the treaty. In order to maintain security, Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid reached out to their neighbours and in 1971 they signed an agreement, which signified the creation of the United Arab Emirates.

My Dubai

Artist and founder of Alif Art Gallery Natalya Andakulova shares her Dubai highlights for a wonderful stay in the city

}

1

I’ve lived in Dubai since 2007 although I was born and raised in Uzbekistan. I love this city in spring as the climate is comfortable making it a great time to explore when the weather outdoors is beautiful. This is also a good time of year for me as there are usually a lot of cultural events taking place which I enjoy attending. I often visit Gate Village at Dubai International Financial Centre where many major art galleries are located. Another important cultural stop for me is Madinat Jumeirah Theatre which often has performances from Russian state theatre which I love. I like this type of entertainment because it is spiritually enriching, it lifts my mood and is extra time for me to get close to art and culture. I love spending weekends in Ras Al Khaimah which is full of beautiful places to visit. Otherwise, I go out on boat trips or visit the beach and spa. I enjoy sports and attend Thai boxing and yoga classes as often as I can. At the weekends I also enjoy a delicious breakfast on the terrace of Madinat Jumeirah Hotel - Al Qasr as it’s one of Dubai’s most beautiful hotels.

I am lucky to have had many wonderful memories from my time in Dubai so far. I think my favourite is from last New Year’s Eve when I attended the spectacular fireworks show at Madinat Jumeirah Hotel – Mina A’Salam There are lots of events to take part in throughout the year and my favourites are Art Dubai and Design Days Dubai. I love cultural events like these not just because I am directly involved due to my profession, but also because I meet so many interesting and amazingly creative people. There are many remarkable restaurants to try and I am a particular fan of Pierchic at Madinat Jumeirah Hotel – Al Qasr. The location is breathtaking, perched at the end of a pier overlooking the Gulf and the seafood is delicious. Another wonderful seafood restaurant is Al Mahara Restaurant in Burj Al Arab where you dine in front of a stunning floor-to-ceiling aquarium. I am also a regular visitor to Zheng He in Madinat Jumeirah Hotel – Mina A’Salam for tasty Chinese food in a very chic setting.

When friends and family come to visit I take them to Dubai Miracle Garden which opened earlier this year. It is a beautiful flowering oasis in the city with stunning floral arrangements and designs. I also like to take family for lunch at Burj Al Arab and Madinat Jumeirah Hotel – Al Qasr where we are guaranteed incredible ocean views. Whenever I want to go shopping, the best place for me is The Dubai Mall. For me it’s the best place to shop in the city. I think you can find practically everything in there. I am lucky to have had many wonderful memories from my time in Dubai so far. I think my favourite is from last New Year’s Eve when I attended the spectacular fireworks show at Madinat Jumeirah Hotel – Mina A’Salam. The display there was truly superb and it was a night I won’t forget.
