In focus Image: Bedouin jewellery Photography: NPI archive Jewellery has been an important part of life in Arabia from the times of the nomadic tribes, who used it to barter for goods, through to the present day when it helps define a woman’s style and individuality. At first glance, traditional Bedouin-style jewellery may appear clunky, weighty and lacking in some of the delicacy found in other jewellery designs. This is because it is usually made from heavy silver. Look closer, however, and you will see fine craftsmanship and details such as bells, coins, beads and stones as well as Arabic calligraphy. Bedouin-style jewellery can be found in Abu Dhabi's malls as well as modern souks at Qaryat Al Beri and Central Market.

MY LIFE IN ABU DHABI

Name: Andy Dixon Nationality: British Position: Head coach at Manchester United Soccer Schools, Abu Dhabi I came to Abu Dhabi from Dubai 10 months ago to manage the Manchester United Soccer Schools programme. Abu Dhabi is truly multicultural. Living here, you gain an insight into many different cultures. It is a place which is developing rapidly and always changing. Since we have been based in Abu Dhabi, we have had a great response in terms of the number of children on our course, from both boys and girls. Speaking to parents, players and the community, it is evident that there is a huge football culture and passion for the game here. The support shown for the teams during the recent FIFA Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi reinforces the popularity and enthusiasm for the game. Abu Dhabi’s ownership of Manchester City has helped generate a lot of football interest and as a result, more clubs from around the world are looking to set up bases here. For Abu Dhabi’s youth, this can only be positive, in terms of keeping children physically active, as well as improving their football knowledge and ability. In my spare time I enjoy trying different foods and eating at the many restaurants that Abu Dhabi has to offer. I also enjoy going to concerts and over the last 10 months, I have seen some great artists such as Prince and Stevie Wonder perform at the Yas Arena. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a place that visitors must see. The amount of detail that has gone into the building is truly breathtaking. Whatever it is you are looking for in Abu Dhabi, whether it is great food, stunning beaches or five-star hotels, this is the place to visit.

on the high seas For the first time in the event's history, there will be a Middle Eastern host port in the Volvo Ocean Race, a gruelling round-the-world yacht race that begins in Alicante, Spain, on October 29th 2011 and ends in Galway, Ireland, in July 2012. Abu Dhabi will be at the centre of the action for two weeks from January 1st when the yachts sail into port. To complement the racing action, the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority has planned a plethora of world-class entertainment, including headline concerts with international superstars and interactive race villages. What makes this event even more special is that Abu Dhabi has entered a team for the first time. Led by double Olympic medallist, America's Cup skipper and 2008/09 Volvo Ocean Race skipper, Ian Walker, the team includes a core of ocean racing veterans and two UAE nationals – Adil Khalid and Butti Al Muhairi – who will be hoping to make their country proud.

ART | DISCOVER

WHETHER YOU’RE LOOKING FOR AN INVESTMENT PIECE OR TO ADMIRE THE WORK OF LOCAL CREATIVE TALENT, ABU DHABI’S ART GALLERIES ARE THE IDEAL PLACE TO START Abu Dhabi’s art scene is blossoming. The city already has a number of fine galleries displaying local, regional and international works

as well as organisations dedicated to helping the art scene flourish. In the next few years, however, Abu Dhabi will take centre stage when the Louvre and Guggenheim museums open on Saadiyat Island. At the heart of the city’s art scene are a number of dedicated individuals who are determined to put Abu Dhabi on the cultural map. WORDS BY AMANDA TOMLINSON

Sumayyah Al Suwaidi

Artist and curator

I have been an artist for 10 years and a curator since 2007 when I curated my solo exhibition, ‘Beyond the Horizon’. I specialise in Emirati art, but I also curate group exhibitions by artists of different nationalities and I hold open-call exhibitions for artists from around the UAE and abroad. In general, I specialise in contemporary art. Among the 13 exhibitions I have curated is the annual Ramadan Art Bazaar, a group exhibition by artists of different levels from around the world. This year will be its fourth edition. Another is the Emirati Artists Group exhibition ‘4 Decades’ at the new Al Qattara Arts Center in Al Ain. How is the art scene developing in Abu Dhabi? It is developing rapidly and I am proud to be part of this development and change. Abu Dhabi is more appreciative of art and artists than 10 years ago and support for artists and art in the emirate is becoming clearer following the government's 2030 strategy. What are the most popular themes seen here? More commonly seen are the traditional-themed artworks such as calligraphy, deserts, camels, horses, falcons and sheikhs. What advice do you have for people who are looking to invest in a piece of art to take home? Before making a purchase, research the artist and find out how long he or she has been active. Buying art is an investment and the buyer should know that the piece they have bought is worth the money and that with time its value will increase.

Jalal Luqman

Artist and gallery owner

I have been an artist for 21 years. Although I introduced digital art to the UAE, my work began to shift to mixed media when I started to integrate metal and wood into my art. In 2006, I co-opened Ghaf Art Gallery. How has Abu Dhabi’s art scene evolved over the past 20 years? There was close to no art scene in Abu Dhabi 20 years ago and there was little activity in Dubai and Sharjah. Abu Dhabi did not have anything significant, but after the announcement in 2007 that the Cultural District would be built on Saadiyat Island, art and culture rose quite a few notches on the priority list. People from all over the world started to come here to see what will happen once the Cultural District opens. How can visitors experience local art while they are in Abu Dhabi? Come to Ghaf Art Gallery, of course. These days the art agenda for Emirati art or art produced by artists living in the UAE is full. There are events happening in Abu Dhabi's Emirates Palace, at Manarat Al Saadiyat and in Sharjah, Dubai and all over the country. Auctions, openings and sneak peeks are happening on a daily basis. When we opened Ghaf Art Gallery in 2006, we were the only contemporary art gallery in Abu Dhabi. Now there are five or six, each with an active agenda.

Photography: Adham Sneeh and courtesy of the ABU DHABI MUSIC & ARTS FOUNDATION

Who are some of the local and regional artists to look out for and why? Sumayyah Al Suwaidi is probably the most dynamic artist in the UAE. I believe her talent has no beginning and no end, from an artist to a fashion designer. Mohamed Kanoo, who is my partner at Ghaf Art Gallery, works in total isolation to shock us every year with works of art that are the work of a visual genius. Also look out for Abdulrahim Salem and Mattar bin Lahej.

Salwa Zeidan

Gallery owner, artist and curator

I am originally from Lebanon, but started my art career in 1988 in Abu Dhabi with a group show for 17 of the top artists in Lebanon at the time. I am a selftaught artist and pursued my passion through extensive research, visits to hundreds of museums, galleries, art fairs and artists studios around the world and have exhibited my paintings in galleries, art fairs, biennales and private collections around the world. What influences artists in this region? The Middle East has for decades experienced dramatic turmoil, controversy and change and this, in my view, is fuelling a very profound form of art: selfexpression. When a soul has been challenged, tormented and exposed to so much, it naturally has more to say. I strongly believe that what defines us today and what will continue to earn us a unique position on the global art scene is our continuous need for expression.

How can visitors experience local art? There are numerous galleries that exhibit local artworks. It is my personal mission to find and nurture local talent and it is amazing to see how much fresh, raw talent there is. Visitors have a great chance to see local art in such galleries and also in the two major art fairs in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. What advice do you have for visitors who want to invest in art? I advise collectors to buy works that move them since enjoying a piece is a huge part of the collecting process. It is equally important to purchase works by artists who are actively progressing and growing their careers, which turns any artwork into a lucrative investment in the long run. When in doubt, purchase art from a reputed gallery and the investment is as good as the reputation of the gallery itself. Which artists should visitors look out for? Local artists such as Fatima El Mazrouei, Laila Jumaa, Mohamed Mazrouei, Mohamed Kazem, Sumayya Al Suwaidi, Fatima Lootah, the great Hassan Sharif and Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim.

Hoda Ibrahim Al Khamis Kanoo The Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation was established by Hoda Ibrahim Al Khamis Kanoo in 1996. It aims to encourage, nurture and promote music and arts in Abu Dhabi. What makes art in this region unique? It is not so much about art being unique, more that it is original, innovative and bold. We recently partnered with Abu Dhabi developer Mubadala on an exciting exhibition showcasing the work of 10 Emirati artists, all of whom are pushing their own boundaries. Emirati artists in particular are strongly influenced by their own rich cultural heritage and I believe that this may lend a unique aspect to their art. How can visitors to Abu Dhabi experience local art and culture? Abu Dhabi is a city rich in art and culture. During the Abu Dhabi Festival, held each year between March and April, we have back-to-back events over two weeks ranging from ballet to opera, contemporary dance to modern Arabic music. Alongside this we run dozens of workshops across all seven emirates fostering and encouraging people to become involved with the arts. Abu Dhabi has quickly positioned itself as a global hub for creativity, tolerance and a place where great ideas can be incubated and encouraged. Alongside the festival, there are year-round exhibitions, workshops and lectures from some of the world’s leading cultural thinkers. These are very exciting times for Abu Dhabi as the sense of innovation is palpable.

Culture vultures Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island will soon be home to cultural giants the Louvre and Guggenheim museums, in addition to a performing arts centre and a national museum. Each has been designed by world-renowned architects including Frank Gehry, Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid and Jean Nouvel and will begin to open from 2013. Cultural District developer TDIC is committed to developing the art scene in Abu Dhabi and regularly brings international exhibitions and art shows to the capital. Many of these can be seen at Manarat Al Saadiyat, a gallery, exhibition space and information centre on Saadiyat Island. While at Manarat Al Saadiyat, visitors can learn about the Cultural District project and enjoy a meal at Fanr restaurant. For more information, see www.artsabudhabi.ae

GIVENCHY With sharp details and a boxy construction, the timeless Antigona (above left) combines the femininity of a classic Boston bag with masculine features. It also incorporates military details such as a large industrial zipper and a triangle padded leather patch. Inspired by Antigone, a strong female figure in Greek mythology whose name means ‘unbending’, the Antigona has metal hooks and loops and a leather shoulder strap to allow the Givenchy woman to carry the piece in different ways. The bag comes in black, brown, beige, cream and leopard print. Buy: Rodeo Drive in Sheikh Khalifa Street and Paris Gallery in Abu Dhabi Mall and Khalidiya Centre

VALENTINO Made in malleable, traditional calf leather, the Rockstud bag (above) retains Valentino’s craftsmanship and heritage with its dual bellows’ structure adding functionality to grace. Discover Abu Dhabi’s heritage, culture and festivals in the traditional heart of the emirate Words by AMANDA TOMLINSON

In Abu Dhabi’s Western Region, the sand dunes are among the highest

in the world. Some reach more than 100 metres and one even tops 300 metres. It is in the Western Region, known locally as Al Gharbia, where visitors will find Liwa, a string of oasis villages stretching for 100 kilometres along the northern border of the Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter). Liwa is the home of the Bani Yas tribe, from which Abu Dhabi’s ruling Al Nahyan family descended, and was historically a popular resting place for caravans and tribes seeking shelter from the heat of the desert. Tens of thousands of dates are grown along this oasis strip and there are many camel farms, making it a great destination for those looking to escape the pace of the city and witness a more traditional side of the emirate. This month, the region hosts the seventh annual Liwa Date Festival from July 12th to 21st. The popular event highlights Emirati culture and heritage that is still very much a part of life in Al Gharbia, while showcasing the variety and quality of local dates.

Festival fever In 2010, the Liwa Date Festival attracted more than 75,000 people from around the world and across the UAE. It offered the chance to see traditional performances and learn about the heritage and culture of Abu Dhabi, while discovering one of the emirate’s unique destinations. Visitors walked away with free boxes of dates, 7000 in total, which were supplied by local farmers, and shopped at the traditional market where 159 stalls displayed authentic handicrafts lovingly made by Emirati women. In fact, sales at the market topped AED4 million (US$1.1 million). Children were given the opportunity to try traditional games and entertainment, while in the performance tent, visitors saw old-style Emirati houses and listened to traditional music. This year’s date festival will offer the same, if not more, attractions for visitors. For information, see www.adach.ae

Ships of the desert While dates are the main focus this month, another of Al Gharbia’s much publicised events is the Al Dhafra Festival. Held in December, it is a tribute to the iconic camel. Gharib A ly Hassan Moussa Mohsen, chief concierge at the Tilal Liwa Hotel, says the Al Dhafra Festival is a “beauty pageant beyond compare”. “This festival is one of the world’s finest gatherings of long-legged beauties. Camels from all over the region gather at Madinat Zayed every year for trading and the beauty contest.” The festival is held in the desert near Tilal Liwa Hotel and while it may be a once-a-year event, visitors can experience traditional camel activities year round. Just a few kilometres from Tilal Liwa Hotel is a race track where owners train their camels. Mohsen says visitors will usually see camels from the nearby farms being put through their paces between 6 and 8am and again from 6 to 8pm.

Towering dunes Undoubtedly, one of Liwa’s biggest draws is the desert. With dunes varying in colour from pale to rich red, Liwa sits on the fringe of the Rub Al Khali, the largest stretch of sand in the world, which covers an area the size of Belgium, France and Germany combined. While it is virtually uninhabitable, it is possible to visit on an organised desert safari or to simply marvel at one of the world’s highest sand dunes. Meaning 'scary mountain’, Tel Moreeb is one of the highest sand dunes in the world. It is almost 300 metres tall, 1,600 metres wide and has an incline of 50 degrees. There is a sealed road that winds through the desert and leads to the scary mountain. It is a picturesque 20-kilometre drive from Liwa and visitors will spot camels and camps along the way. Mohsen says Tel Moreeb has become well known since the introduction of a number of festivals and events. One of these is the Al Gharbia International Festival in December, which attracts an army of determined competitors who attempt to drive four-wheel drives, buggies, quad bikes and motorcycles up its steepest face. Organised tours of Tel Moreeb can be arranged, but for those who choose to go it alone, Mohsen has this advice: “Make sure you have enough water for each person accompanying you. It’s advisable to take at least one to two litres of liquid per person. It’s a perfect asphalt road to Tel Moreeb, therefore it’s not necessary to have a 4x4.” Another way to experience the Rub Al Khali is with a desert safari. “Dune bashing in the Rub Al Khali is an experience you will never forget,” says Mohsen. “One of the most spectacular areas on the planet, it is an off-road playground beyond compare.”

The spice is right With the subcontinent just a few hours away, Abu Dhabi is home to a number of fine Indian restaurants Angar This delightful restaurant on Yas Island is known for its traditional Indian cuisine with a modern twist. Sample delights from Punjab, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Goa, deserts from Bengal and Mughlai cuisine from Kashmir. Popular dishes include rogan josh, biryani and butter chicken, while the specialities of the house are favourites too. Try lamb boti, an appetiser prepared in the tandoor and marinated using chef Satish’s personal recipe, then flavoured with star anise and mace. Vegetarians are well catered for with dishes such as karare gobi (crispy cauliflower), while the Bengali desert, rus malie, which is topped with fresh raspberries and gold flake sprinkles, provides a refreshing end to the meal. Angar’s defining feature is the show kitchen, which is decorated with beaten copper, complementing the warm red hues of the restaurant. Guests can watch the chefs as they make traditional Indian bread before cooking it in one of three tandoors. Chef Satish is originally from Mumbai, where he developed his knowledge of the various regional cuisines in India. Rangoli In a sea of vibrant colours and textures, Rangoli, which takes its name from one of India’s most common art forms, is known for its diverse flavours and aromas. The cuisine is traditional and simple yet contemporary at the same time. Importance is placed on fresh seasonal ingredients which are combined with subtle, aromatic and, at times, fiery spices which are the core of Indian cuisine. Rangoli offers home-style cooking from north and south India and serves it in a contemporary form, combining colours and flavours. From the open-plan kitchen, which has two tandoor ovens, chef Nitin Raheja, who is from New Delhi, prepares the restaurant’s favourite dishes. Among them is the Rangoli home-style chicken curry, which chef Nitin says is prepared using the same method employed by families in India. “The chicken is cooked with caramelised onion, tomato, ginger, garlic and a blend of Indian spices. The curry is finished with some yoghurt, flavouring, spices and fresh coriander. It’s one of the fast-moving dishes and has been appreciated a lot.” Where: Yas Island Rotana When: Tuesday to Sunday, 7pm to midnight Contact: 02 6564280 or email rangoli.yasisland@rotana.com

Tanjore For a taste of the Indian subcontinent in Al Ain, visit Tanjore restaurant. The restaurant has a warm and subtle atmosphere with neutral tones and Indian accents. Its authentic décor complements the traditional cuisine, setting the scene for a culinary journey to India. Coming from India, the chef has specialised in his home cuisine since the beginning of his career, so diners know they are in for the real deal. Among the popular dishes are traditional tandoor items, chicken chettinad, bhuna gosht (meaty favourite) and luchnawi gosht ki biriyani (meat and rice). Ideal for families, groups of friends and business travellers, Tanjore has a regular promotion throughout summer in which diners can enjoy unlimited kebabs from the traditional clay oven. Indigo It’s best to visit Indigo with a raging appetite because chef Gauruv Gaur likes to feed his guests well. Chef Gaurav, who is from Delhi, India, has specialised in contemporary modern Indian cuisine for more than eight years, so guests know they are in good hands, especially once they see the team in action in the show kitchen. The inspiration for chef Gaurav’s dishes comes from north India, however the menu contains traces of south, east and west too, allowing guests to taste the best of what the country has to offer. While dishes are carefully selected for the menu, classics such as murgh malai tikka (tandoor-roasted chicken marinated in pepper cheese, cardamom and mace) and the signature dish sikandari raan (pot-roasted leg of lamb marinade with chilies, cardamom and potli masala) remain popular along with the kebab assortment. To complement the beautifully prepared dishes, there is a selection of classic international cocktails and mocktails with an Indian flavour. The restaurant is cosy and stylish with a warm colour palette and bursts of brightness. It is popular during the week when a threecourse express business lunch is offered, while in the evenings the degustation menus are an ideal way to sample more dishes. Shooting

Paintball Practise your aim, let off a bit of steam or take delight in firing a round with friends and family at Al Forsan International Sports Resort’s impressive paintball facility. There are two air-conditioned domes to choose from as well as two outdoor floodlit tournament fields. But to make things a bit more interesting, why not stage a Wild West shootout or practise tactical warfare on a Pacific Island? Al Forsan has different themed play zones equipped with special sound effects, lighting and air-conditioning. There are interactive props, ‘intelligent’ sounds and smoke effects to add to the fun. The paintball centre has an indoor practice range where people can acquaint themselves with the arsenal as well as briefing rooms and changing areas. Coaching is available for all skill levels, making it an entertaining challenge for groups of friends, family and colleagues. In addition, competitors can upgrade their weapons to a Tippman Custom 98 or a TPX pistol for extra oomph or add paint grenades to their arsenal to gain an edge on the opposition.

The UAE’s only Olympic medal was won in double trap shooting by Sheikh Ahmad bin Mohammad bin Hasher Al Maktoum in Greece in 2004, so it’s no surprise that shooting is a popular pastime here. In Abu Dhabi, visitors can make like an Olympic champion and fire a few rounds at Caracal Shooting Club where the arsenal includes semi-automatic pistols, bolt-action rifles, semi-automatic rifles and sport pistols. Most of the action happens at the 25-metre target shooting range and there is a 10-metre open range for training. A gallery overlooks the 25-metre range so those who would rather not participate can still watch. Beginners are given a safety briefing, while for those looking to improve their skills there are training courses for shooters of all levels. Once on the range, officers accompany all shooters throughout the session to ensure the safe use of the firearm. Under UAE law, the minimum age for shooting is 12 and identification such as a passport must be shown. Indoor skydiving There’s nothing quite like free falling from a small plane at 13,000 feet, but for those who don’t have the nerve to jump, or those who would like to work on their free-fall tricks, indoor skydiving is the logical choice. Based at Abu Dhabi Country Club, Spacewalk is a vertical wind tunnel which produces enough power to lift an adult of average weight. In fact, the wind speed can reach 200kmh, but it is adjusted according to a person’s size. To start flying, it’s as simple as leaning forward at the entrance to the wind tunnel. The wind immediately picks up your body suspending you mid-air. Once inside, the way you move your body determines where you fly. The more experienced you become, the more tricks you can try. No experience is necessary as all training is offered by qualified instructors, who will be more than happy to show off their level of experience. Spacewalk is suitable for those aged three and above and there is a 90kg weight limit.

The G-Force experience takes passengers on an adrenaline-pumping ride up 62 metres through the roof and back down again. The view of Yas Island from the top of the tower is worth it for those brave enough to take the ride. For those who like their thrills a little closer to earth, there are state-

ENTERTAINMENT ISLAND Yas Island has become Abu Dhabi’s ultimate entertainment destination. Not only does it have the world’s only Ferrari theme park, the state-of-the-art Yas Marina Circuit and the stunning Yas Links golf course, it also hosts some of the planet’s biggest performers and entertainers. While some of the most recent stars to perform on the island include Snoop Dogg and The Wiggles, the lengthy list of entertainers includes Prince, Aerosmith, Guns N’ Roses, Nelly Furtado, Tiny Tempah, Kanye West, the Jonas Brothers, Shakira, Stevie Wonder, Jamiroquai, Corinne Bailey Rae, David Guetta, Eric Clapton and Tiësto, to name just a few. The Yas Arena is a well-designed outdoor venue beside Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. In November last year, it welcomed a capacity crowd of 45,000 for the Prince concert on the final day of the 2010 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. large screens, ample F&B outlets, plentiful parking and numerous amenity blocks combine to make it arguably the best concert venue in the emirate. Nearby is the Flash Forum, an air-conditioned structure that has hosted events such as the NBA JamFest and SkyBar Abu Dhabi. Both venues host the highly successful Yas Island Show Weekends, a series of international acts designed to appeal to all ages. In launching the series last year, Ossama Khoreibi, chairman of Flash Entertainment, the event organiser,

said the concerts would position Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island as one of the world’s premier entertainment and cultural destinations. “Flash has designed the Yas Island Show Weekends to offer people another reason to keep coming back to this wonderful leisure destination each and every weekend,” Khoreibi said. “Through Aldar, which has seen the development and implementation of a world-class infrastructure, Yas Island is becoming an internationally recognised centre for events and entertainment.”

Yas Links course has rolling hills, seashore green locations and 130,000 new mangrove plants lining the island’s western coast. Specialist golf course architect Kyle Phillips has designed this unique course in keeping with the traditional form of links golf commonly associated with the coastal towns of Scotland and Ireland, while incorporating the landscape of the region. Yas Links has a 7,450-yard par-72 course utilising five teeing grounds per hole with eight holes running along the coastline and all 18 holes offering Arabian Gulf views.

The Andalucía clubhouse has areas for relaxation after playing a round. There’s a sports bar, fine-dining restaurant, men’s and ladies’ locker rooms with steam rooms, a pro shop and an outdoor pool and croquet lawn with coastal views. “Fairways, tees and green elevations range from +1 to +8 metres above sea level. This, coupled with

a rugged finishing and the planting of native, wispy grasses, will allow the golfing enthusiast to drift back in time to how the original links courses were laid out through the redundant sand dunes that separated the open sea from the more valuable arable land,” says Chris White, general manager at Aldar Golf and a former PGA professional.

YAS MARINA One of Yas Island’s defining features is Yas Marina, a 142-berth facility capable of accommodating vessels ranging from 15 to 66 metres, with guest berthing for up to 120 metres. It is one of the most prestigious positions from which to watch the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and berths fill up quickly for this event each November. Yas Marina also hosts the annual Abu Dhabi Yacht Show, an exhibition showcasing luxurious super- and megayachts. This year’s event was held from March 24th to 26th.

Among them are the worldrenowned Cipriani, which includes not just the famous Italian restaurant, but also the brand’s first Japanese offering, Yotto, and the superclub Allure by Cipriani. Both Cipriani and Allure overlook the marina and The Yas Hotel, providing a stunning backdrop to a delicious Italian meal or an evening at the city’s newest night venue. Visitors to the Yas Yacht Club will also find the Monaco institution Stars ‘N’ Bars, an American-style sports bar and diner with a well-executed motor racing theme. Some of the world’s biggest names have dined and partied at Cipriani and Stars ‘N’ Bars, including Sir Richard Branson, Prince Albert of Monaco, King Juan Carlos of Spain, F1 mogul Bernie Ecclestone, singers Prince, Nelly Furtado, Linkin Park and Fabolous as well as DJ Erick Morillo, to name just a few.

Stars ‘N’ Bars

Cuisine: American

This unique restaurant and sports bar offers a fun-filled night out with a touch of Monte-Carlo and a sporting edge. Guests sit in racing seats in the diner-style restaurant and feast on American cuisine with a Tex-Mex flavour. Choose favourites such as buffalo wings, nachos and quesadillas from the starting line-up, chilli con carne, barbecue ribs and steak from the selection of mains or sandwiches, burgers and pizza. No American-style sports bar would be complete without a great selection of international beverages. Choose from sparkling, frozen, classic and virgin cocktails, Champagne, wine and bottled and draught beers. Get a group together and take one of the private dining booths, which fit eight people and have their own screens, making it the ideal place for watching sporting matches. Guests can also buy a keg of beer and have it connected to the table. There is a distinct motorsports theme with a collection of posters and other sporting memorabilia. More than 20 plasma TVs show sport from around the world and there is a dropdown screen for the big games. Cipriani

Cuisine: Italian

Adding to the glamour on Yas Island, Cipriani perfectly blends its marina setting with a delicious Italian menu. There is a distinct nautical theme, with the décor and design resembling the inside of a yacht. Expect portholeshaped glass panels, polished wood, white fabric and touches of navy blue. The menu, which changes daily, stays true to Cipriani’s Italian heritage with classic dishes such as carpaccio, buffalo mozzarella with tomato and basil, pasta and risotto, and a fine selection of mains. Italians are renowned for their decadent desserts and Cipriani is fast earning a name for its selection. Among the most talked-about are the vanilla meringue and the lemon meringue tarte, while the tiramisu is always a favourite. There is also a fine selection of Italian beverages, including wine, cocktails and afterdinner drinks. While the dishes at Cipriani are worth the visit, what makes the restaurant particularly special is the setting. From the first floor of the Yas Yacht Club, Cipriani overlooks The Yas Hotel and the Yas Marina offering stunning views by day or night. Noodle box

Cuisine: South East Asian

Step inside this bright and vibrant restaurant and watch the chefs working their woks to create authentic yet contemporary dishes from South East Asia, while the hanging Peking duck adds to the authenticity. The décor is possibly the most visually interesting in this racing-themed hotel. Amber glass sculpted branches hang from the ceiling and noodle-like chandeliers dangle from the perimeter of the roof. Signature dishes include roasted glazed duck and mae goreng, with other favourites such as laksa, nasi goreng, Thai curries and classic Chinese dim sum also featuring on the menu. To wash it all down, Noodle Box offers a selection of flavoured ice teas, light-bodied wines and refreshing fruit punches. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, however its business lunch promotion is particularly popular. This month, guests are invited to beat the heat with Noodle Box’s ‘Too Hot to Handle’ promotion. Receive a discount equivalent to the temperature shown on the outdoor thermometer when paying the bill. Stills Bar & Brasserie

Cuisine: European

This European-style bar and brasserie is one of the most popular venues on Yas Island. With the longest bar in the city at 26 metres, European cuisine and views over the Arabian Gulf and Abu Dhabi skyline, it is easy to see what draws the crowds. Visit at sunset for an aperitif with dramatic views over the water, before indulging in some fine European specialities. Stills recently introduced a new menu, but favourites such as fish and chips, and steak and ale pie can still be found. Those who love the Belgian favourite, mussels, visit on Monday nights from 7pm to feast on unlimited moules for AED99. From Sunday to Thursday, however, Stills offers a set-menu business lunch, which includes salad, main, dessert and coffee for AED60. DISCOVER Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a must-visit while in the capital. Open daily to the public, open-minded representatives educate visitors about the mosque and share general information about Islam. They also answer any questions at the end of the session. Heritage Village near Marina Mall on the Breakwater displays a model of Bedouin tents. Visitors can see animals such as goats, horses and camels. There is an example of the ancient falaj irrigation system and a traditional market that sells local crafts and souvenirs. Visitors can also taste Arabic food. Spare a day to explore Al Ain National Museum in the ‘garden city’, a one-and-a-half-hour journey from Abu Dhabi. Along the way, you will pass farms growing various types of dates. The museum displays a small stone from the moon, as well as artifacts, pottery, rare coins and

You may also spot birds and sea creatures. This water-based tour is available throughout summer.

EXPERIENCE Take a jeep safari and explore the dunes, visit a camel farm and enjoy a barbecue dinner under the stars. If you fancy an adrenaline rush, ride a dune buggy through the desert with friends. Your concierge can help organise any of these activities. If you are planning group activities, such as team building or corporate events, and want to avoid the heat of summer, visit Al Forsan International Sports Resort which has recently opened in Khalifa City A. Here you can try go-karting, indoor paintball, shooting, horse riding and water skiing. Explore the mangroves with a kayak ride. Paddle through beautiful lagoons and narrow channels under the full canopy of mangroves.

Discover Proud of its culture and history, Abu Dhabi has focused efforts on preserving its identity through galleries and museums

The capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi is also the largest and wealthiest emirate of the seven that form the country. Before the discovery of oil in 1958, Abu Dhabi relied heavily on pearl diving, fishing and date cultivation. In recent years, however, oil wealth has been used to transform the city into a modern, rapidly expanding metropolis that makes headlines around the world, sparking interest from travellers and investors near and far. Despite this rapid transformation, history, heritage and culture are still very important to Abu Dhabi and there are many ways in which visitors can experience this for themselves.

The Heritage Village, for example, is a re-creation of Bedouin life and has displays, a small museum and souk. Al Ain, the ‘garden city’, is the heritage hub of the emirate with its historical forts, date plantations and multiple museums. Al Ain sits at the base of Jebel Hafeet, the emirate’s highest peak, and is also listed for possible inclusion as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Abu Dhabi city is also pushing a cultural agenda of its own. Saadiyat Island’s Cultural District will soon be home to the Louvre and Guggenheim museums in addition to a maritime museum, national museum and performing arts centre.

Experience With a vast desert, spectacular coastline and world-class sporting facilities, Abu Dhabi is made for action and adventure

With the Arabian Desert, more than 200 islands, world-class golf courses and international motorsport facilities, Abu Dhabi is a haven for adventure seekers. One of the most popular experiences is visiting the desert and many people choose to do this on a half-day safari. The afternoon includes a session of desert driving in a 4x4, which is followed by a visit to a camp where guests can ride camels, try sandboarding, wear local dress, smoke shisha and sample local food. In contrast to the giant desert dunes, Abu Dhabi also boasts a lively water culture with more than 200 islands and many active watersports available to try.

One of the latest attractions is Yas Marina Circuit, home to the 2011 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. At this state-of-the-art track, visitors can experience the thrill of being a passenger in a two-seat Formula One car. Next door is Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, an indoor theme park with the world’s fastest rollercoaster, which speeds to 240kmh, F1 simulators and 18 other rides and attractions. At a slightly slower pace, the emirate is also home to world-class golfing facilities, including the Gary Player-designed Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, Kyle Philipsdesigned Yas Links and the Abu Dhabi Golf Club.

64

The Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship is one of the most prestigious international sports events in the capital. It is the first of three European PGA Tour events held in the Gulf in the space of three weeks – the others being the Qatar Masters and Dubai Desert Classic. From January 21st to 23rd, Abu Dhabi Golf Club hosted the world's top golfers, including reigning champion Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood and Paul Casey, who battled for a share of the AED9.9 million (US$2.7 million) prize purse and the coveted Falcon Trophy. Kaymer won the championship for the third time in four years. A new addition to Abu Dhabi’s golfing scene, the Kyle Phillips-designed Yas Links staged The Invitational charity golf tournament on January 17th. South Africa's Retief Goosen won the event ahead of Frenchman Thomas Levet and Sweden's Henrick Stenson. Also in January, golfing legend Gary Player hosted the Saadiyat Beach Classic, a charity event that raised almost AED2 million and attracted some of the world's finest golfers. .

Shop From haute couture to traditional souvenirs, Abu Dhabi is a shopping haven with spacious malls and atmospheric souks

Whether you are searching for the latest designer bag, a tailor-made suit or an authentic souvenir to take home, shopping opportunities in Abu Dhabi are endless. From modern malls with many of the world’s best known brands to traditional souks and handicraft stalls, visitors can easily while away a few hours, or even days, filling their suitcases with mementos from their trip. Marina Mall and Abu Dhabi Mall are favourites with residents, mostly for their variety of high-street and designer labels in everything from fashion to footwear and jewellery to luxury lifestyle products. But don’t discount the smaller malls as there are many treasures to be found here as

well. Make time to stop by Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre where you will find the city’s gold souk and don’t forget to haggle. Those looking for a traditional shopping experience can visit the open-air Iranian souk in the Mina Port area, which is a good place for buying coffee sets and hand-painted pottery, or the carpet souk, where they will find pieces from Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, China and Central Asia. A modern approach on the traditional market can be found at the Souk at Qaryat Al Beri or Central Market, which has partially opened. The Arabian-themed Souk at Qaryat Al Beri is home to numerous jewellery and perfume stores as well as waterfront restaurants.

Taste Superb restaurants and glamorous cocktail bars make Abu Dhabi a stylish and sophisticated choice for fine food and drink

With almost every type of cuisine catering for all budgets, eating out is as exciting as it is accessible. International speciality restaurants offer excellent cuisine, from French to Moroccan. From fine-dining restaurants in the city’s most luxurious hotels to tiny stalls selling authentic street food for a couple of coins, Abu Dhabi’s restaurants and eateries serve delicacies from all corners of the globe. Alcohol is freely available in many hotels and clubs, but most independent outlets are not licensed. However, they still offer a unique dining experience.

Middle Eastern dishes are a must-try and many Arabic restaurants will offer nightly entertainment, such as belly dancing or oud playing. Shisha (hubbly bubbly) is readily available and is a popular and traditional way to relax and unwind after a meal. With Abu Dhabi’s prime coastal position, waterfront and al fresco dining is also popular. But for something a little out of the ordinary, why not enjoy a meal while overlooking the action of Yas Marina Circuit, try edible gold in the city’s most luxurious hotel or dine surrounded by nature on a desert island?

DRINKING IN ABU DHABI

Local licensing laws mean that most outlets serving alcohol are limited to the city’s four- and five-star hotels, sports clubs and some governmentowned establishments. There is a zero-tolerance policy on drink driving and anyone involved in a collision found with alcohol in their blood will usually receive a month's jail sentence and a fine. Drinking in public is also illegal and punishable with a hefty fine, and sometimes imprisonment. Alcohol is not sold on religious holidays, nor during daylight hours in the holy month of Ramadan, even to non-Muslims. The legal drinking age in the UAE is 21. Young people should carry identification when visiting a bar as they may not be let in.

Hummus: Well known and loved even beyond the Middle East, this Arabic dip or spread is made from cooked, mashed chickpeas blended with ground sesame seeds, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic. Moutabel: A delicious and spicy smoked aubergine dip that is popular in Syria, Lebanon and Palestine. Fattoush: This Levantine salad is made from toasted or fried pieces of pita bread and mixed with lettuce, cucumber, onion and other vegetables. Sambusek: Small, triangular pastry pies filled with cheese, meat or spinach. Ouzi: This popular baked lamb and spiced rice dish is a favourite during Ramadan, the Islamic holy month.

76

Umm Ali: Similar to bread and butter pudding served in the west, this favourite Arabic dessert contains milk, pastry and nuts, and is a staple dish in many buffets.

SMOKE SIGNALS Smoking shisha (hubbly bubbly) is very popular in Abu Dhabi. The Middle Eastern water pipe, which is thought to have originated around 500 years ago, purifies and cools the smoke from flavoured tobacco heated on top of the pipe by coals. It costs approximately AED35 to 50 to smoke and the most popular flavours are apple, mint, strawberry, apricot and grape. Although relaxing and sociable, estimates suggest that an hour of shisha smoking equates to inhaling as many as 50 cigarettes. If you’re after an authentic taste of Middle Eastern culture, however, smoking shisha is a must. Just remember not to inhale too deeply, blow down the pipe to get rid of smoke build-up in the water and share your shisha among friends. This is a social tradition to be enjoyed in groups or couples.
