Montblanc 1858 Geosphere

This year sees Montblanc’s Minerva manufacture mark more than 160 years of fine watchmaking history. Paying tribute to this rich legacy, the Swiss maison raised the curtain on four new editions of the Montblanc 1858 collection earlier this year – two Montblanc 1858 Automatic models, a Montblanc 1858 Automatic Chronograph and Montblanc 1858 Geosphere. The historic Minerva pocket watches and chronographs from the 1920s and 1930s, which were conceived for military use and exploration, serve as the inspiration for this new line-up. And Montblanc reaffirms its passion for the great outdoors with an elegant pairing of green and bronze highlighted in three pieces of the collection. Precise, legible and robust for use in extreme conditions, these horological masterpieces make the ideal companions for fearless adventurers and explorers looking to reconnect with nature and conquer new heights. The two new Montblanc 1858 Automatic models come in a choice of colour pairings. The first features a full bronze 40mm case (previous versions had a steel case and a bronze bezel) with a khaki-green dial, while the second packs in a striking combination of a steel case with a black dial. The new 1858 Montblanc 1858 Automatic Chronograph comes in a 42mm

full bronze case with a khaki-green dial, providing the ideal backdrop for the bi-compax counters. The fourth model is a reimagination of the Montblanc 1858 Geosphere which was introduced in 2018. Dedicated to the Seven Summits Challenge – the world-famous mountaineering feat that sees climbers scaling the highest mountain on each of the seven continents – this year’s edition features a new colour palette, once again highlighting the new green-bronze theme. The dial complications of the Montblanc 1858 Geosphere are meant to be as visually striking as they are useful to an enthusiast out and about on his next hike. Two rotating globes on the dial (that also move with the dial) display the northern and southern hemispheres, allowing the wearer to tell the time in other parts of the world as well as whether it’s day or night there. All in all, when style is as important as utility, the new Montblanc 1858 collection checks all the boxes.

In the spotlight ——

Louvre Abu Dhabi shines a light on the Dutch Golden Age with a showcase of more than 90 works from the 17th century including 16 remarkable paintings by renowned artist Rembrandt van Rijn

In the early 17th century, a young Dutch artist from Leiden took his first steps in the world of art, mastering the fundamentals of painting, drawing and etching under the mentorship of a skilled Italian painter. Little did he know he was crafting a legacy that would resonate across the creative realm decades and centuries later. Carving his path from portraits of wealthy members of society, Rembrandt van Rijn gradually began to explore landscapes, animal studies, self-portraits, as well as allegorical, mythological and biblical themes through his works. And among his many remarkable pieces, one oil sketch, in particular, depicting a young Jesus Christ in prayer, stands out. This rare 17th-century painting – Head of a young man, with clasped hands: Study of the figure of Christ – now takes pride of place at Louvre Abu Dhabi. Displayed alongside 16 other remarkable paintings by the master himself, as well as 90 other works from the Dutch Golden Age, the acclaimed piece is part of the museum’s ongoing exhibition Rembrandt, Vermeer & the Dutch Golden Age: Masterpieces from The Leiden Collection and the Musée du Louvre running until May 18.

The 17th-century was a period of great wealth in Leiden and the wider Netherlands. Trade with the rest of the world blossomed and this played a great role in the nation’s prosperity. It was against this backdrop of cultural exchange, exploration and discovery that the Dutch Republic entered its Golden Age. Art and science also began receiving its fair share of attention, evident in the works produced by other Dutch artists from Rembrandt’s circle including Johannes Vermeer, Jan Lievens, Ferdinand Bol, Carel Fabritius, Gerrit Dou, Frans van Mieris and Frans Hals. Such was the success of these rare talents that their legacy continues to be celebrated even today and there couldn’t be a more fitting theme for Louvre Abu Dhabi’s first international exhibition for 2019. Among the highlights are a series of paintings and drawings from Rembrandt’s career and workshop. It’s almost as though you’re being invited to embark on an inspiring journey

Bust of a Bearded Old Man, Rembrandt van Rijn Courtesy The Leiden Collection, New York

There couldn’t be a more fitting theme for Louvre Abu Dhabi’s first international exhibition for 2019 through his exceptional creations, right from his early allegorical paintings of the senses, which demonstrate his youthful ingenuity and his experimentation with expressions, composition and colour during his Leiden days, to later works created in Amsterdam, including sensitively-rendered portraits, which include the Self-Portrait with Shaded Eyes and Minerva in Her Study, his monumental rendition of the goddess Minerva. In yet another milestone moment for Louvre Abu Dhabi, this exhibition will see two paintings produced by artist Johannes Vermeer hung beside one another for the first time in 300 years. Created on canvas and cut from the same bolt, the duo features The Lacemaker loaned from Musée du Louvre and Young Woman Seated at a Virginal from The Leiden Collection. Completing the presentation of 95 exceptional artworks, including paintings, drawings and objects, are loans from the Rijksmuseum and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Visitors to the museum have until May 18 to witness this stunning collection of masterpieces from the finest Dutch storytellers. Rembrandt’s iconic oil sketch depicting Christ, however, will call Louvre Abu Dhabi its new home, joining the museum’s permanent collection of more than 650 pieces.  louvreabudhabi.ae  600 565566

Built to last ——— As the spotlight turns to the Al Gaffal Dhow Race this month and Emirati sailors gear up to compete, Concierge takes a closer look at this humble vessel to discover its enduring appeal and cultural significance in a world of megayachts and imposing cruise liners

As a symbol of Arabic culture and industry, the dhow takes some beating. A unique engineering nexus of grace, strength and seafaring innovation, these are vessels that have endured for centuries and, to this day, loom large in the region for both sheer presence and function. Down at Dubai Creek you can vividly connect with the craft and its utility – from its latter day use as recreational vessels for tours and dining to its more traditional form as robust transporters of cargo. Thrillingly, you can also witness a historic tradition of construction that can only be passed down from generation to generation. Here, the craftsmen in action resort to the most basic of tools – hammer, saw, adze, bow-drill, chisel, plane and caulking iron – to bring these magnificent vessels to life.

Unlike the Western construction model, Arab dhow building begins with the stem and stern posts, followed by the rough unfinished hull planks, usually made from teak, that are held in place with supporting ribs or templates. The internal reinforcing framework is introduced once the hull nears completion. Hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of holes are hand-drilled to avoid splitting the wood, and long thin nails swathed in oiled fibre secure the planks to the frames. Remarkably, the whole process remains credibly intuitive and organic. Plans and drawings are eschewed in favour of the eye and gut feel, and measurements are entirely experience-led. At all times, overall accuracy is orchestrated and overseen by a master craftsman, who guides the vessel into error-free, seaworthy shape.

Dhows are safeguarded against wear and tear below the water line with a mixture of animal fat and sand, which prevents aerodynamically disruptive barnacles from taking root. Usually, dhows are removed from the water once a year for a thorough cleanse, as well as a new coat of oil inside and out. Although mostly powered by petrol engines these days, a traditional dhow usually has a minimum of two triangular sails. Some dhows have a single large sail known as lateens. Different types of sails are sewn according to individual requirements. For more thrust, a less flat sail with fuller luff tends to be used. The most stunning of dhows are always equipped with ornate, filigreed decorations. The whole production can take up to ten months, although smaller versions of the dhow can be finished between one and four months, depending on intensity of work and the size and ability of the team.

Abu Dhabi Classics 2019

Every year, internationally acclaimed artists bring soul-stirring experiences to audiences in the emirate October 12 last year saw the UAE capital usher in a brand new season of classical music. Soulful strains of the violin were met with thunderous applause, a fitting opening to the ninth season of Abu Dhabi Classics, the most popular music festival on the emirate’s cultural calendar. On opening night, violin virtuoso Renaud Capuçon joined the prestigious Camerata Salzburg Orchestra at Emirates Palace Auditorium, inviting audiences to journey through the evolution of music over the years with popular works from the Viennese Classical Period to the New Music Era including Mozart’s Violin Concertos 4 and 5 and Satie’s Gnossiennes. Every year, an ever-expanding roster of internationally acclaimed artists brings soul-stirring experiences to audiences in the emirate. The packed line-up this season featured renowned French harpist Xavier de Maistre and also saw talented ballet dancers from La Scala Academy Rising Stars make waves with their captivating performances. But one performance that made history this season was The Valkyrie. Abu Dhabi Classics played host to the world-renowned Bayreuth Festival troupe earlier this year, marking the famed ensemble’s international opera debut – the first outside of Germany. The artists brought Richard Wagner’s iconic production to the UAE for the first time, led by Wagner’s great-granddaughter Katharina Wagner herself. As the season draws to a close, the spotlight turns to Chinese pianist Ran Jia, who is all set to amaze classical music purists with a solo piano recital on April 19 at Manarat Al Saadiyat. The award-winning musician will make her Middle East debut with a programme of romantic works. For the finale, audiences can look forward to Ran Jia’s modern renditions of Austrian composer Franz Schubert’s works including his Sonata in D major D850 and Sonata in B flat major 960. The artist will also perform Three Preludes for Solo Piano produced by her father Daqun Jia, a leading Chinese contemporary composer. La Scala Academy Rising Stars

With giraffes, gazelles and even cheetahs roaming across its wild, natural landscape, Sir Bani Yas Island feels less like the UAE and more like a slice of Africa. That’s all thanks to the Arabian Wildlife Park, a 1,400-hectare nature reserve that takes up more than half the island and is home to over 13,000 animals. Opportunities to spot gazelles galloping through the sand and cheetahs lingering over a kill are present in plenty. But that’s not all there is to discover on Sir Bani Yas Island. The destination also boasts one of the region’s oldest archaeological sites with the most significant discovery being the ruins of an ancient Christian monastery from the late sixth century AD. The earliest evidence of human activity on the island dates back to around 5,500 BCE while other remains, including pottery items and a large tomb from around 2,000 BCE, confirmed Bronze Age dwellers. Adventure lovers will be thrilled to find an array of activities on offer, with land sailing, falconry, archery, mountain biking, kayaking and horse riding among the popular pursuits. Pearl farm tour

Discover precious pearls

Long before the discovery of oil, pearls were an important source of wealth for the people of the United Arab Emirates. During the 18th and early 19th centuries, pearl divers would sail for four months at a time, working from sunrise to sunset, scouring the depths of the Arabian Gulf waters for this natural treasure. It was a very dangerous practice and pearl diving equipment at the time was rudimentary. Divers had to take to the waters with just a nose clip, fashioned from goat or gazelle horns and hold their breath to search for pearl oysters on the seabed. Their only lifeline back to the boat was a rope that would be used to haul the divers back to the surface. Pearling in the UAE died out in the early 1930s when the introduction of Japanese cultured pearls changed the face of the industry. Fortunately, the UAE’s rich pearling heritage is now undergoing a revival, thanks to the efforts of RAK Pearls Holding that operates a dedicated pearl farm in the emirate. And you can now gain an in-depth look into the fascinating world of pearls by booking a tour of the Suwaidi pearl farm in Al Rams, Ras Al Khaimah. Your guide will regale you with tales of pearl divers, while also showing you how to open oysters. And you can keep any pearls found as a souvenir of this remarkable experience.  07 2211124

Al Hamra Sailing Club

Al Hamra Sailing Club in Ras Al Khaimah is one of the most exciting additions to the UAE’s sailing scene. Located just a short walk from the Al Hamra Marina and Yacht Club, it has been open for little over two years, yet it is already a hive of activity for the area’s sailing enthusiasts. Instructor Philip Reeves, a British expat who moved to Ras Al Khaimah to manage the club, is on a mission to build a thriving sailing community that not only serves the emirate, but also the wider region. Al Hamra is an idyllic location for a sailing hub, with a serene coastline that nevertheless gets enough of a breeze to power Ras Al Khaimah’s fleet of vessels. The sailing clubhouse is well equipped and provides a warm, welcoming base where the community can meet. Most of the lessons on offer are aimed at children and teens, but the adult sailing lessons are becoming increasingly popular. Over the weekends, residents from all over the emirate flock to the club to sail and to socialise. Some even make the drive from Dubai and Abu Dhabi every weekend to participate in the activities on offer. Even for the absolute beginner who can’t tell their port from their starboard, Ras Al Khaimah is an ideal place to learn to sail. The wind speeds are well suited to both racing and relaxed sailing, while there are plenty of choices for both open and closed water sessions. Al Hamra Marina, for example, has an enclosed lagoon that makes for a very safe learning environment.  alhamramarina.com 49

Wadi Showka is popular among the UAE’s fitness community for hiking, mountain biking and trail running, with miles of four-wheel tracks that are easy to follow. The walls of the valley offer shelter from the elements, while the flat wadi floor makes the perfect base for campers to pitch their tents. It’s a far cry from a five-star hotel, but the tranquil surroundings and starry skies make for an unforgettable experience. It’s a wonderful feeling to trade the bustle of the busy emirates for serenity among the hills. You’ll be surrounded by craggy mountains on all sides with some lonesome palm trees scattered along narrow, pebbly paths. Small ponds and natural springs are present almost all year round and it’s not uncommon to find yourself in the company of local wildlife including mountain goats, camels, donkeys and birds.  dubaihiking.org

For history buffs looking to journey into the emirate’s past, few places offer as much of an in-depth look into the region’s heritage as the National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah. The UAE’s past is brought to life with a series of rare artefacts and interesting finds that paint a picture of life in the ancient towns dating back almost 7,000 years. Housed within a 19th-century fort – the residence of Qawassim rulers until 1964 – the exhibits include archaeological artefacts unearthed from local digs, traditional weapons and ethnographical objects ranging from the Neolithic period up to the Islamic era.  07 2333411

A valuable lesson ——

Montblanc boutique, The Dubai Mall

Montblanc regional president Franck Juhel talks expert craftsmanship, the concept of gifting and how collectors are shaping the future of the maison

For more than 110 years, Montblanc has been synonymous with expert craftsmanship, from the luxurious writing instruments that have been created since 1906 to the exquisite timepieces and impeccable leather goods that are sold around the world today. This reputation for excellence has allowed the brand to establish boutiques in excess of 110 countries and gain a loyal core of collectors from all corners of the globe. Yet Montblanc remains as ambitious as ever, consistently entering new markets and creating distinguished products that stand the test of time. This is in large due to the desire of those tasked with taking the company forward, and few individuals embody this passion more than Franck Juhel. Previously holding senior positions at Cartier and Jaeger-LeCoultre, he is now president of the maison’s operations across the Middle East, Africa and India, a role that sees him tasked with expanding operations in the vast region and ensuring a level of service that is on par with the brand’s flagship stores in London, Hamburg and New York. “In this region, especially the Middle East and India, the concept of gifting is very important. This is crucial for Montblanc as we have established a reputation over time for crafting products that anyone would be happy to receive. That has been a tremendous advantage as we look to expand our presence,” explains Juhel. “Of course, we can always do more and are constantly assessing where to open our next boutique, but our goal today as a brand is to work on the quality of the service we provide to our customers. We want to ensure that the level of service in Dubai, New Delhi or Durban is the same as in our stores on Bond Street in London or on Madison Avenue in New York. We also want to ensure that the same range of products is available in every location.” Since Juhel took on the role 18 months ago, Montblanc has opened eight new stores in India and a small boutique in Dubai’s iconic Atlantis, The Palm. There are also plans in place to significantly up the offering throughout Saudi Arabia, one of the best performing markets for the brand in the region. “To be honest, with Saudi Arabia, we don’t know where the limit will be and when the growth will end,” admits Juhel. “We have eight boutiques in the kingdom but I know that in six months, 12 will not be enough and soon after, even 15 won’t meet the demand. “We have a similar scenario in India as we have clients and friends of the brand who are expecting Montblanc in their city, but the challenge is where to open. We have to find ways to meet the demand while also respecting the DNA of the brand and the environment that we need to open it.”

59

CONC_UAE_APR19_SHOP_INSIDE STORY_MONTBLANC.indd 59

As well as expanding Montblanc’s presence throughout the region, Juhel is also tasked with assessing the performance of products and creating strategies to take the maison forward. This means he is regularly in touch with collectors, who, by his own admission, know more about the brand than even those with decades of experience within the company. These meetings are crucial as Juhel is able to better understand the needs of Montblanc’s customers. This information, along with sales data on all of the brand’s products, has led to some surprising discoveries. “We had thought for a very long time that because of new technology, analogue would disappear. And when you are in charge of a region, you need to work on plans and strategies, so you begin to question what will replace that loss,” says Juhel. “But I have found that even the younger generation wants that link back to reality. “In fact, our fastest growing category today is writing instruments and this remains our leading category throughout the world. It is especially true in this region where calligraphy has been passed down through generations. They demand that level of craftsmanship, which is why we brought our master nib maker to the UAE. “Clients can meet this specialist who is then able to create a personalised nib based on the buyer’s loops, angles and writing pressure. This could also be created especially for calligraphy or even specifically for signatures, where the speed you write at is much faster. I have one that I use solely for signatures and it is amazing.” Constructing a customised nib

Of course, Montblanc has not ignored the digital revolution and receiving feedback proved vital when the maison made its first tentative steps in the world of smartwatches. It all began in 2015 with an e-strap that acted as an activity monitor, followed two years later by the launch of the Summit 1. “The case and design represented all the codes of Swiss watchmaking and was made by us in Switzerland in the same way that we produce our mechanical timepieces. And we were amazingly surprised by how it was received by the market and our clients,” says Juhel. “When we first launched, we didn’t have enough stock. But the most interesting lesson is that, it has not just brought new clients to the brand, but also existing customers, who own a Montblanc tourbillon, for example, have bought the smartwatch. “There was a discussion that smartwatches would replace mechanical timepieces, but we have seen that one doesn’t replace the other. There is room for both.” This kind of client feedback is invaluable, not just for Juhel, but the brand as a whole. Each of the regional presidents has strong relationships with collectors, and it is these individuals who truly decide what the future holds for the maison. They are even invited to the meetings that are held each quarter as Montblanc’s board from Hamburg convenes with the regional presidents to discuss the products

that will be launched in the years ahead. “I see collectors all the time. It is a great way to pick their brain and see what Montblanc will be tomorrow,” Juhel says. “We have writing instruments, leather goods and watches that have been developed, thanks to the feedback from our collectors. And at the end of the day, they are part of Montblanc as it is like a family. “For the last few years, we have also invited them to our board meetings that delve into the subject ‘what is Montblanc for you and what is the future?’ “We talk for hours and there is a lot of information shared on both sides. But we are not only talking about the products being launched in a year or two, but also the ones coming as far as seven years in the future. “Ultimately, we know our DNA and we have to respect it and this will never change. Montblanc is more than 110 years old because we have values that we have respected since the beginning. But I don’t see how we would be able to grow or be true to ourselves, today and tomorrow, without talking to our clients.”

Greek chic ———

We talk to chef Izu Ani to discover why the new DIFC hotspot Gaia is making waves on Dubai’s vibrant dining scene

It’s only been a few months since its opening, yet Gaia in Dubai’s DIFC neighbourhood is on track to become the hottest hangout among the emirate’s chic crowd. After all, with a menu that draws on traditional Greek cooking, you can certainly expect to be wowed with the sheer array of classics on offer. One of the many talents behind this success story in the making is concept creator chef Izu Ani, who together with head chef Orestis Kotefas, has crafted a menu that brings the best of the Mediterranean to Dubai. And with the Greek goddess of Mother Earth, Gaia, serving as the inspiration, the venue champions humble and authentic cuisine with fresh ingredients in a contemporary space that oozes plenty of charm. Read on as chef Ani takes us on a journey behind the scenes... Tell us about your journey as a chef. How did it all begin? “Growing up in London, my passion for the kitchen began during home economics classes at school. After graduating, I started to work in a few hotels and joined the Michelin-starred restaurant The Square in Mayfair. I then travelled to France – where I lived for six years – to experience nouvelle cuisine first hand and this greatly influenced my culinary style. I also spent time in Alsace and the South of France where I worked at a number of restaurants including the two-Michelin-starred La Bastide Saint Antoine and the world-renowned three Michelin-starred Auberge de L’Ill. Then, my sights were set on Spain, and it was here that I gained invaluable experience in multiple cuisines and also discovered molecular gastronomy. My first venture after returning to London was relaunching the menu at Vanilla. But soon, the opportunity to relocate to Dubai came my way, which was followed by the successful launch of La Petite Maison. The venue made it to the list of the World’s 100 Best Restaurants less than two years after its opening.” What’s the story behind Gaia? “Gaia was born two years ago while I was having lunch with my partner Evgeny Kuzin who asked me what I thought about opening a Greekinspired concept. We explored different ideas and visions with many others who have since been involved with the project. Gradually, the original concept evolved and was brought to life with a name that defined its design and an ambience that tells its story. The kitchen is the centerpiece of the layout and as I like to think of it, like in theatre, the food is the actor or star of the show.” What inspires Gaia’s culinary philosophy? “Greek cuisine is about generosity, love and family. It’s a culture that enjoys laughter and most likely invented the notion of “less is more”. Greek taverns are an extension of the kitchen at home and this is what I love. You never have a better meal than in the comfort of your own home.”

Fresh oysters

With so many restaurants in the UAE offering the best of the Med, how does Gaia stay ahead of the game? “We never make peace with our comfort zone. It’s an ever-evolving adventure that will never be complete. We always keep our eyes and minds open to draw constant inspiration.” What inspired the creation of the menu at Gaia? “Every dish tells a story. While conceptualising the menu, we delved into Greek traditions with our Greek head chef Orestis Kotefas and Greek sous chefs. Combined with my understanding of the culture, which I obtained through my travels, we worked together to build a menu with classics and put our own creative spin to these dishes. We made sure everyone’s point of view and experiences were respected and this helped us create the perfect environment to develop Gaia’s offering.” Could you tell us more about your signature dishes? “All your typical Greek favourites are our signatures, but not without our creative twist. We’ve dressed these dishes up differently to fit Dubai’s palate. It’s all about putting the right framework into the right environment with the right portion sizes, colours and textures.” When it comes to the overall experience, what can diners expect? “The focus is on the products. All our ingredients are exposed and not hidden. Gaia tells the story of Greek culture through the food.”

“All your typical Greek favourites are our signatures, but not without our creative twist. We’ve dressed these dishes up differently to fit Dubai’s palate” Choriatiki salata

With the dining scene in DIFC being pretty competitive, what do you think is the formula for making a concept work? “Concentrate on what you do and don’t pay attention to what others are doing. Time and energy are precious. You have to stay positive, motivated and disciplined to be the best at what you do.” Tell us more about what goes on behind the scenes at Gaia? “Respecting the ingredients is the root of our philosophy, a mantra of sorts we live by. Once you respect your ingredients, you automatically manifest that same respect to your guests.”

Baked feta

From conceptualising a dish until it reaches your diner’s table, what goes into every new recipe? “Once again, it’s all about the products. You have to understand what you’re working with and speak to it. You need to question how it can be layered with other ingredients and keep trying and testing new combinations until you find the right balance. Before introducing it to the menu, we like to run it as a special to ascertain how our guests received it.” What’s the one dish at Gaia guests simply have to try? “To leave with the complete experience, you have to try our cheese pie, moussaka, grilled fish, prawn saganaki or the choriatiki salata.” For reservations at Gaia or more information  04 2414242.

Little Miss India, Fairmont The Palm

True north —— If spice is the first thing that pops into your mind when you think about Indian food, a visit to Fairmont The Palm’s Little Miss India will prove there’s more to discover, especially with flavours from the country’s northern culinary heartland

Dubai’s diverse Indian dining scene means you can’t go too far without coming across at least one outlet serving up flavours from the subcontinent in every neighbourhood. But there’s a common misconception that all Indian flavours are created alike. In fact, it’s quite unheard of to find two different restaurants with the exact same menu. Every outlet has a different story to tell and you’ll find a vast array of dishes inspired by regional cooking styles and specialities from every corner of the country. Take, for instance, Little Miss India. This quirky eatery at Fairmont The Palm nods to the North Indian way of life with an eclectic menu of traditional dishes that boast a subtle modern touch for a creative spin. We visited on a Friday evening and couldn’t have been more impressed! Everything, from the vibrant décor to the sumptuous cuisine, was on point. For the longest time, my dining partner and I had always believed that the best Indian food could only be found in our mothers’ kitchens, but Little Miss India effortlessly altered that notion with an experience that left us with a fierce urgency to return. The first thing that strikes you about the restaurant is its playful setting. Greeting you at the entrance is a vibrantly painted truck decked in tribal art and trinkets, similar to the ones often found whizzing through narrow lanes in the northern region of the country. During the cooler months, the private courtyard lends itself to a memorable experience. But dining indoors is equally impressive. Step in through the imposing glass doors and you’ll find yourself instantly transported to a royal Indian mansion, home to the hostess Little Miss India herself. When she isn’t busy travelling the world, Ms Mohini Singh will warmly welcome you to her abode and although we missed her on our visit, the restaurant’s staff left no stone unturned to ensure we felt at home.

Chef Mohammad Arif

You first step into the lounge, which houses the bar and serves as the perfect spot for a round of pre or post-dinner drinks. The extensive list of signature cocktails and mocktails will leave you spoilt for choice, but your server will happily reel you off the menu to make sure you pick one best suited to your tastes. We simply couldn’t resist the homemade lassi, a smooth drink made with churned yoghurt, sprinkled simply with chaat masala or infused with fruit. You then make your way to the elegant dining room, complete with cosy tables and chairs, antique wooden doors, beautiful chandeliers, quirky art adorning the walls and an open kitchen, where you can catch the chefs in action. It’s truly entertaining to watch these culinary masters grilling meats on an open flame and baking fresh Indian breads in a tandoor, while irresistible aromas of spices fill the air. Given that almost every Indian dish is our favourite, we based our food choices for the evening on our server’s suggestions, who recommended we try the restaurant’s signatures that are a hit among guests who keep revisiting only to tuck into their favourites time and time again. We started off with the smoked lamb chops, which our server informs us, is one of the most ordered items on the menu. The delectable balance of flavour is achieved by marinating the lamb for up to 48 hours in a heady mix of 12

This quirky eatery nods to the North Indian way of life with an eclectic menu of traditional dishes unique spices. It is then served in an enclosed jar with a piece of charcoal for that distinct tandoor aroma and taste. We also enjoyed the murgh malai kebab, the ideal option for diners with a low spice threshold. Prepared in a mixture of cream, cheese and cumin powder and finished on the grill, it is served with a mint and chilli chutney on the side which dials the heat right back up. Moving on to our mains, the dal makhani is one of those dishes you shouldn’t leave without trying. A true labour of love by the chefs, the process to create this recipe begins 12 hours before it reaches your table in order to soften the black lentils used. Served in a copper vessel, you can dunk a piece of bread in it, the laccha paratha in our case, and savour every bite.

Murgh tikka and sunehra jhinga

No visit to an Indian restaurant is complete without trying the biryani. And at Little Miss India, your servers will make sure this classic doesn’t go unsampled. The dum biryani is unlike other varieties you may have tried. Saffron-infused basmati rice is cooked with spices in a clay pot sealed with dough to ensure that the flavours and aromas remain intact through the cooking process. The seal is only opened at your table, instantly filling the air around you with its pleasant notes. Those with a sweet tooth will be glad to learn that Little Miss India serves up a splendid selection of traditional desserts, including the famed gulab jamun served with vanilla ice cream and phirnee brûlée, a twist on Italian crème brûlée, cooked with rice, milk, coconut cream and brown sugar. We tried the rasmalai, a classic Bengali dish with cottage cheese dumplings served in condensed milk. All in all, Little Miss India outdoes your expectations in every way. From the vibrant décor that makes the perfect shot for your Instagram feed to the beautiful spread of dishes with flavours you won’t forget for a long time, this elegant Fairmont The Palm venue shouldn’t be missed. THE LA S T W ORD

Julia Smolenkova As the artist prepares to showcase her latest pieces at World Art Dubai 2019, she tells us more about how the vibrant emirate serves as a constant source of inspiration for her work

Dubai is an extremely unique place boasting several modern achievements while still retaining its rich Arabian heritage. The city projects openness, goodwill and there are an unbelievable number of options for those who visit. In fact, one of my favourite aspects of Dubai is the unlimited possibility for professional development as an artist because the city attracts so many creative enthusiasts from all around the world. It’s very encouraging to see art-focussed events on the rise in the region and I am grateful to be able to participate in some of them. Top of the list for me is World Art Dubai, which I am extremely excited to be exhibiting at this month. Events such as these contribute to the affordable art scene; they fill the gap and correct the misconception about art being elite. For me, World Art Dubai is the ideal platform for upcoming and established artists to showcase their talent and for visitors of any background to experience and buy art. No rules apply here, just a love of all things art. My painting Cities features a hero piece based on Dubai. I’ve always been amazed by the city, right from the moment I first arrived. There’s something about its unique colour and light you don’t easily find in other places. In fact, the city looks different with each passing moment and to someone with a creative eye, it provides fresh artistic impulses. It’s truly a place of movement and development in every sense. There is always something to do here, it’s impossible to be bored. There are so many events to attend and art can be found everywhere. I particularly like visiting Dubai Design District, which is a hub for artists from around the region and the world. When I am not working on creating something new, I love to discover brand new places. From hitting up a reserve with flamingos to embarking on a desert safari, my weekends tend to be packed. One of my favourite things to do is visiting Burj Khalifa. In fact, every time I visit a new city, I find the best way to gauge its depth and understand its intricacies is to stand somewhere where the city lies open before you. This is how you really connect with the place. Details disappear, leaving only emotions and feelings as the sights fill you up. Dubai invites different people and cultures with open arms while still maintaining its integrity. This has resulted in a unique and strong identity with unlimited potential. I am grateful to fate for bringing me here. I would advise first-time visitors to be real tourists and visit all the iconic and famous places you have seen or heard about. My top recommendations include Burj Khalifa, The Dubai Fountain, Al Fahidi Historical District, Dubai Creek, Al Seef, Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, Dubai Museum, Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House, Jumeirah Mosque, Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, Dubai Frame and Jumeirah Beach. In subsequent visits, I would recommend exploring the city on a deeper level.
