Editor’s note The short months of winter in the UAE are popular among visitors and adventure-seeking residents who love to explore the great outdoors, be it camping on the dunes or enjoying a wonderful meal in an al fresco setting by the sea. But summer in the region brings its own set of experiences that highlight just how diverse life in the region can be. Ushering in the hot spell is one of the most beautiful times in the region. The holy month of Ramadan, which is expected to begin on May 5, will see Muslims across the UAE, and the world, pause and reflect on their faith. And while the devout turn their gaze inwards, this wonderful season offers visitors and residents of other faiths the chance to witness the nation’s diversity come to life as they partake in the rituals practised during Ramadan, which you can learn more about in our photo essay on page 24. Keeping our focus on the region’s rich cultural heritage, we give you a glimpse into the fascinating world of Islamic art on page 20, from the ancient practice of calligraphy to modern-day examples found in the region’s prominent architecture. While on page 36, we take a look at traditional sporting pursuits as locals strive to keep the nation’s love of heritage sports alive. Take a break from exploring the city to browse the latest collections in designer fashion and accessories. Our style guides from page 52 onwards offer plenty of inspiration for the season’s best buys. Delving into the world of horology on page 48, we discover why Bovet remains popular among watch collectors across the globe, almost 200 years since the Swiss maison’s humble beginnings. And since Arabic fare is the taste of the season with iftars being served all across the city after sunset, concluding with suhoor in the early hours of the morning, we present some of the must-try Ramadan dining experiences on page 68. If the magazine leaves you feeling inspired, book your next experience with us by visiting myconcierge.com.

—— Ramadan, expected to begin on May 5 this year, is a special time for Muslims where the devout turn their gaze inwards to enhance their spirituality. During the holy month, the faithful fast from sunrise to sunset, in keeping with one of the five pillars of Islam. Visitors to the country at this time can benefit from several events designed to help them understand Ramadan better such as the educational programmes and activities held at the Sheikh Mohammed Cultural Centre for Understanding in Dubai. While daylight hours move more slowly, the region comes to life after the sun goes down and the fast is broken with iftar, with friends and family gathering from sunset and coming back together late into the night to socialise before suhoor.  cultures.ae

The 2018 edition of Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) saw Montblanc raise the curtain on a reimagined Montblanc 1858 collection inspired by the adventure traveller. From innovative chronographs to a beautifully crafted pocket watch, this collection got horology buffs talking. This year was more about technical and aesthetic updates with the Montblanc 1858 models rendered in an elegant pairing of green and bronze in a nod to the outdoors. With the historic Minerva pocket watches and chronographs from the 1920s and 1930s – conceived for military use and exploration – serving as the inspiration, four new timepieces were introduced in 2019. And there’s one name already making waves among watch collectors across the globe – the all-new 1858 Split Second Chronograph. Limited to just 100 pieces, the model looks every bit like a sports watch, but it’s the high-end chronograph movement beneath the dial that’s a technical marvel. The watch is a monopusher split second chronograph – something of an evolution – boasting a completely new MB M16.31

manufacture movement. For the wearer, this means there’s a single pusher for starting, stopping and resetting the chronograph as well as a button set into the crown to control the split function. Although simple and easy to use, it takes 262 components (of which 25 are jewels) to power this high-end movement with a balance that beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour or 2.5Hz. Also, the calibre is hand-wound and carries a power reserve of 50 hours. On the wrist, the 1858 Split Second Chronograph looks like every watch collector’s dream. Red-gold elements stand out against the black lacquered dial enclosed in a 44mm bronze case that gives it a vintage touch – yet another distinguished colour pairing from the Swiss maison. Another standout feature, a telemeter scale runs around the dial, which makes it possible to measure the distance of a phenomenon which is both visible and audible, like lightning and thunder in a storm. The watch also features a tachymeter (base 1000) at the centre of the dial in a snail-like shape, allowing the wearer to measure a length of time up to three minutes instead of one minute in a traditional chronograph scale around the dial. Discover the collection at Montblanc boutiques at The Dubai Mall  04 4340300 and The Galleria on Al Maryah Island  02 6764776.

Artistic heritage ——

Complex calligraphy patterns, exquisite Arabesque designs and significant symbols of faith paint a beautiful picture of the diverse world of Islamic art

Majid Al Yousef thoughtfully contemplates his next stroke before the pen glides down the piece of paper one final time to complete his masterpiece. He carefully takes one last look and as he studies his own art, he says: “Calligraphy has always been a form of meditation and exploration to me. Back in the day, it was the only medium for preserving sacred texts and communication and so it was nurtured and developed through the centuries. Today, the art form holds immense value. It possesses this mystical quality that makes it so appealing.” Unlike in Western civilisation, where paintings and sculptures are often considered the two most important art forms, Islamic art has always followed a different form of hierarchy. The most revered of them all is the art of the written word, as this can be attributed to its use in the pages of the Qur’an as well as other important religious texts. During its prime in the Middle Ages, calligraphers were hailed as the most important artists and rewarded handsomely for their craft, which included everything from penning fine manuscripts to creating artistic inscriptions on the walls of mosques. Local calligraphy artist Ibraheem Khamayseh tells us: “In the days of the Ottoman Empire, A rabic calligraphy enjoyed a golden era and the art form could be found everywhere you looked. You could see it gracing mosques, libraries and cultural clubs. Also, as one of the main forms of selfexpression, the style played a significant role in Arabic poetry. In fact, poems that were presented using calligraphy had more weight, were more appealing and easier for the common people to connect with than those simply written.” But Khamayseh believes that the art is currently enjoying a revival in the Middle East with nations like the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia reinforcing calligraphy as part of the local culture. This treasured form can today be found masterfully inscribed on coins, paintings, sacred sites, architectural monuments and artistic works that have been preserved for centuries. “Sometimes, all you have to do is walk down the street to find a piece of art inspired by calligraphy,” he says. Venturing beyond the realm of calligraphy, Islamic art also encompasses other expressions of creativity, which weave a fascinating tale of human civilisation through the ages.

This treasured form can today be found masterfully inscribed on coins, paintings, sacred sites, architectural monuments and artistic works

Miniature painting at Miraj Islamic Art Centre, Dubai

Al Yousef says: “Floral patterns, geometric designs and miniature works take pride of place in Islamic art with Arabic architecture being one of the most significant pillars.” In fact, in this part of the world, there is no shortage of enchanting examples of Arabic architecture. From classic representations found in Dubai’s historic neighbourhoods, such as the prominent wind towers, to more contemporary examples found on modern buildings and five-star resorts, almost every structure pays tribute to Arabic design in some form. Khamayseh adds: “Figurative paintings depicting religious themes, poetry books, the covers of Qur’ans, glass lamps as well as mosque fittings such as tiles and woodwork all have a special place in local culture.” Among other significant Islamic symbols, the star is a common motif in the region. It is one of the many shapes that recur in various works by Muslim artists, featuring prominently in art and architecture. The eight-point star, known as the khatem, encapsulates many of the underlying principles that form the Islamic understanding of the universe. The symmetrical design represents the order and harmony of creation. Examples can be found on the walls, f loors and ceilings of buildings, etched into traditional ornaments, intertwined through carpet designs and celebrated in paintings. As such, the star reappears often, woven into the very fabric of the country, visible everywhere once you start to look for it. Various other motifs such as the pentagon, octagon and circle crop up time and time again in Islamic designs, piled into complex patterns that pay tribute to the infinite nature of Allah. But the representation of Allah in figurative form, depictions of Prophet Mohammed and his family and the portrayal of all living beings are frowned upon as per Islamic teachings. Because of this, animals and people feature a lot less prominently in comparison to Western art.

In this part of the world, there is no shortage of enchanting examples of Arabic architecture Instead, Islamic artists have focused on celebrating the gracious nature of Allah and his creations through Arabesque shapes and geometric patterns. Many works combine the two styles to create beautiful and complex designs that are very distinctive to Islamic art and hence instantly recognisable. Patterns like these are acceptable because they honour, rather than imitate, the Almighty. This does not, however, extend to the portrayal of plant life. In fact, f loral forms are widely represented in Islamic art. Arabesque, a style associated with the art of the Islamic world, is characterised by f lowing depictions of leaves and f lowers. And one of the most beautiful modern-day examples is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, where the outstanding décor is characterised by f lamboyant f lowers covering the central courtyard and columns surrounding it. The theme is continued inside the building, on the walls of the prayer halls and the beautiful stained-glass doors and windows. The mosque is also home to the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet featuring an intricate Islamic medallion design. Offering insight into some of the finest artistic creations by Muslim artists through the centuries, several galleries across the UAE present an array of ancient and modern works. Some collections include engraved pots, handcrafted chess sets, astrolabes, woodcarvings, ceramics, tea sets, glass lamps, carpets and rugs. For more information  04 3363313 or  tashkeel.org

From faith to fasting ——— Expected to begin on May 5 this year, discover what makes Ramadan a truly special time for the faithful

For many, Ramadan is primarily characterised by fasting – the practice of abstaining from all food and drink between the hours of sunrise and sunset. While this is certainly an important part of the Ramadan experience, it is just one of the many elements that come together during the holy month as Muslims turn their gaze inwards and reflect on their faith. This special time of year is also a unique opportunity for visitors to learn more about local culture and customs while joining in some cherished traditions.

Known as the holy month, Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and always starts two weeks earlier than the previous year. The exact date of the beginning of Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the new moon or ‘hilal’. When the slight crescent makes its appearance in the evening sky, the start of the holy month is announced. The following morning, at the first light of dawn, fasting commences. This year, Ramadan is due to fall between May 5 and June 4 or as soon as the official Moon Sighting Committee spots the hilal. At the end of the month, when the hilal is once again observed, the three-day Eid Al Fitr festival to break the fast begins. The occasion marks a special time for families and friends to come together and enjoy the spirit of the season.

4/24/19 4:34 PM

Nasif Kayed, general manager of the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU), explains the different elements of practising Islam, especially during the holy month. “Part of the faith involves fasting during Ramadan. The idea is to teach discipline, perseverance and patience. It also makes you watch yourself very closely. “During daylight hours, between sunrise and sunset, Muslims must abstain from all food, drink, smoking, gossiping and cursing. While outsiders might think this a daunting prospect, many followers look forward to the holy month each year. “The whole community does it together. It would be more difficult if you were the only one,” he adds.

“Of course, there are some Muslims who don’t anticipate the arrival of Ramadan as eagerly, but those who dive into it are rewarded by enhanced spirituality. Many of us really look forward to it because it makes us feel great to practise being good.” The early part of the holy month is often the most challenging. “The first three days are very difficult for almost everyone, but as the month goes on, it gets better. By the time you’re used to it, it ends. You feel so purified that you could continue to live like it past the end of the month,” Kayed explains. When the sun sets, the fast ends for the day and followers can enjoy the iftar meal. It marks an opportunity for friends and family to come together over a delicious feast each night during Ramadan. As well as gatherings at home, hotels across the region serve luxurious iftar buffets incorporating authentic Middle Eastern specialities like dates, hot and cold mezze, pickles, olives, roasted meats, tagines and juices. Later in the evening, a second round of food is served in a meal called ‘suhoor’, which is the last meal before sunrise. Some eat it as an early breakfast before the first prayer.

All through the year, Muslims pray five times a day, but the prayers just before sunrise and just after sunset during the holy month take on extra significance as daylight fasting begins or ends. Performing ritual prayers five times a day is another pillar of Islam and is called ‘salat’. Many read the Qur’an more frequently and intently during this time, memorising parts of the text and reciting the Muslim profession of faith, called ‘shahada’, more often. Ahead of prayer time, worshippers perform ‘wudu’ or ablution to cleanse the face, hands and feet before presenting themselves to God. “Ablution is the physical and mental preparation before you step into conversation with your lord,” explains Kayed. “The prayer is identical every time. All over the world, Muslims say the same words reflecting the same principle: to be good and recognise blessings.” Another major part of the holy month is ‘zakat’, one of the five pillars of Islam that requires Muslims to give to the poor and needy during Ramadan. Feeling hunger from fasting is also a fitting reminder of the suffering of others and the need to be charitable towards those in need.

“During Ramadan, charity counts in every way. You can feed, clothe or give money. You give from what God has given you,” says Kayed. Delving into the significance of the joyous three-day Eid Al Fitr celebration, Kayed says: “After breakfast and prayers, everyone dresses in new clothes to meet each other, starting with the oldest in the family and then visiting extended family. All three days are about spending time with loved ones and having fun together. “It’s also common, though not obligatory, for families to give gifts especially to children during this special time as Muslims around the world come together to mark the end of Ramadan for another year.”

In perfect harmony ———

Giving music fans a more intimate experience, Dubai Opera’s on-going season of Music in the Studio continues until June, bringing a collective of independent artists to perform at the venue’s state-of-the-art studio

Dubai Opera

Curated by internationally renowned pianist Amira Fouad, Music in the Studio, now in its second year, aims to take concert-goers away from the theatre to create a more atmospheric and cosy experience between the musicians and their audiences. Dubai Opera’s chief executive Jasper Hope says, the series, which began in January, has been bringing “some very talented internationally-renowned musicians” to the emirate. So far, the line-up this season included The Ayoub Sisters, Jaume Torrent, Anna Fedorova and the London Mozart Players Quintet. Hope says that keeping the variety of shows, their formats and the performing artists diverse is vital to the philosophy of what Dubai Opera has always aimed to offer and taking shows into the studio is part of that. Dubai Opera’s stage regularly hosts a wide array of world-class talent with opera, ballet and classical music concerts at the core. The venue also stages musical theatre, fashion shows, jazz nights, comedy acts, family shows and a full range of live entertainment. “Dubai Opera was always intended to be a multi-purpose venue, offering the best from a wide variety of genres,” he says. “We vary our programme frequently so as to appeal to as many different interests as possible. It doesn’t mean we don’t have opera, ballet and classical music as a key part of our programme each year – we do – it’s just that we can think broader than that.”

On May 1, Sony Music’s Australian saxophonist Amy Dickson will perform with Music in the Studio’s curator and concert pianist Amira Fouad. A rising star in the music world, Dickson made history by becoming the first saxophonist to win a Classic Brit Award and the first-ever Australian to win the Mastercard Breakthrough Artist of the Year award. Sure to take the Dubai Opera stage by storm this month, Dickson will perform classical works by Debussy, Ravel, Saint-Saëns, Milhaud and Piazzolla, arranged for saxophone and piano. The spotlight then turns to Welsh harpist Catrin Finch, once royal harpist to the Prince of Wales, who will host a studio session on June 12. She has performed extensively throughout the world as a soloist, made special appearances with the world’s top orchestras and has recorded for major international companies. Her Dubai Opera debut will include music by Bach, Debussy and Fauré as well as Welsh folk tunes. Since its launch in 2016, Dubai Opera has offered more than 200 shows including Georges Bizet’s Carmen, Ghost – The Musical, Swan Lake by the Houston Ballet and The Sleeping Beauty by the National Ballet of Ukraine and hosted in excess of 2,000 artists including the king of opera, Plácido Domingo, himself. The UAE is a country with proud ties to its national heritage. Reminders of tradition are everywhere, from architecture inspired by the courtyards of old to modern markets that nod to authentic souk experiences. Perhaps, it’s partly because the region has evolved and grown so rapidly – from Bedouin settlement to global metropolis in a matter of just a few decades – but the past seems ever present and keenly preserved. A modern love of traditional Emirati sports and pastimes, such as camel racing and falconry, is an integral part of the national identity. So much so that these animals have become symbolic of the region itself. In fact, one of the key events during the country’s National Day celebrations is the National Day Camel Marathon, which sees these beloved ‘ships of the desert’ race across a testing distance of 25 kilometres. The annual event, which is overseen by the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center, an organisation dedicated to safeguarding the cultural heritage of the UAE and the Dubai Camel Racing Club, attracts more than 100 competitors every year. Camel racing is a decades’ old sport but it has changed significantly in recent years. Previously, children played the role of jockeys, thanks to their light weight. But nowadays, for their safety, they have been replaced by robot jockeys operated by competitors who drive alongside the racing camels, usually in an SUV, to spur them on to even greater speeds. It’s a high-stakes race and the winners can claim a purse worth tens of thousands of dirhams. Despite these advances to the sport, one thing that hasn’t changed, however, is how cherished these creatures are. There is even a story in the Qur’an about the camel being a gift from the creator. When Bedouin tribes first roamed the

UAE desert, they were largely dependent on camels for their survival. The animals provided transport across the unforgiving dunes and the tribes consumed their meat and milk while also using their wool to make clothes and tents. Today, no desert safari experience is complete without a camel trek across the dunes, giving guests a taste of this practice. Falconry is another contemporary Middle Eastern activity that has its roots deep in the past. Like camels,

A modern love of traditional Emirati sports, such as camel racing and falconry, is an integral part of the national identity falcons were essential to the survival of the region’s Bedouin tribes, mainly as they were used for hunting food. These days, falconers still take great pride in their ability to work with these wild birds and many UAE adventure tours incorporate falconry into their activities.

For an unforgettable encounter, Platinum Heritage organises hot air balloon trips over the desert with a unique falconry experience. The birds – peregrine falcons – are trained to fly alongside the balloon, offering a world’s first in the sport. Additionally, each year, hundreds of falconry enthusiasts from all over the world visit Abu Dhabi for the International Festival of Falconry. Like camels and falcons, Arabian horses are also highly revered in the region and equestrian sports are very popular. These striking indigenous creatures are famous worldwide for their beauty, temperament and speed. For many years, endurance racing was the equestrian sport of choice in the region, a challenging event that would see horse and rider tested over immense distances across the desert dunes. Over the last decade, the Dubai World Cup has established itself as one of the premium horse racing events in the region and one of the richest in the world. Last year, Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum stated that the total purse prize for the annual event would be increased to US$35 million (around AED128 million). While many of the Bedouin traditions have their origins in the desert, there are inextricable links between the UAE’s history and the sea. Dhow sailing and dhow racing are two national sports inspired by the region’s

Lasting legacy ——

As Swiss maison Bovet prepares to touch the 200-year mark in 2022, owner of the house Pascal Raffy tells us how aesthetics have shaped the brand that collectors know and love today

In the year 1822, a young Édouard Bovet, together with his brothers, set out to tap into the flourishing watchmaking trade in China. Although bold in his vision – considering 19th-century China was not as open to the outside world as it is today – little did he know a legacy was in the making, one that would span years, decades and centuries and would be overseen by four successive generations of Bovets. But decades and several other owning families later, Bovet saw a major turning point when, in 2001, ownership moved solely to the capable hands of a former pharmaceutical industry executive and passionate watch collector. Thanks to his successful anticipation of the changes the watchmaking industry would witness in the years to follow, owner of the house Pascal Raffy adopted a new approach to the business, while still maintaining the brand’s rich heritage. “Respecting the traditions of the house was important to me. Why would anyone go looking elsewhere for something that already exists within, something you can be proud of,” he says. Although two centuries apart, both Édouard Bovet and Pascal Raffy shared a common passion for mechanical excellence, which manifested in the craftsmanship and artistry the brand is known for. Anyone today can instantly identify a Bovet watch with the signature decorative crown and the bow at 12 o’clock. In fact, it was these very timepieces that spurred Raffy’s passion for the world of haute horology. “My grandfather introduced me to the fascinating world of watches when I was 10. He was a big collector of fine watches and Sundays were spent with him reviewing pieces from his collection. He would take us through the history and specific features of each piece to imbue an appreciation not only for watchmaking but for art in general. He always felt that it was impossible to secure education for the next generation if you did not respect art and fine craftsmanship.

“Appreciation of art is at the heart of every timepiece collector. It’s an emotional journey” “Pocket timepieces were among his favourites, a fondness I also came to share in later years. It was fascinating to learn how advanced features and mechanics existed in the watchmaking world of the 19th century, while also being incredibly aesthetic with settings of pearls, engravings and miniature paintings. “This Sunday ritual went on for almost six years and while I have to admit, sometimes, it was a little boring, in the end, I started building my own collection. That’s when I began to understand horology better. And when I took over the house of Bovet, I fully understood what it meant to be a collector,” says Raffy. One of the first maisons to blend decorative arts with fine watchmaking, Bovet remains a sought-after name among collectors even today, thanks to its remarkable designs. Precious stone setting, dedicated enamel work and engravings are the very essence of every Bovet piece, all achieved with an unsurpassable level of detail. Such was Édouard Bovet’s expertise that as movements in horology became more subtle, he decided to reveal the magic beneath the dial by incorporating the first transparent caseback in his designs. His early creations are credited with taking watchmaking arts to the pinnacle of refinement, so much so that they caught the attention of the 19th-century Emperor of China, who became one of the brand’s earliest collectors. Some of these pieces now take pride of place in museums all over the world, contributing to the brand’s priceless heritage. Almost 200 years later, decorative arts remain a firm feature in every collection. They are celebrated in every piece and collectors are also able to personalise their timepiece with a specific design. “Appreciation of art is at the heart of every timepiece collector. It’s an emotional journey. The first time you hold a new watch, look at it or open the caseback to take a closer look, it either talks to you or it doesn’t. But you’re aware of the incredible effort behind it – how long it takes to master a calibre, a movement, to develop it and fine tune it – and you appreciate the craftsmanship at work,” he says.

“Only incredible talent can achieve the watchmaking we have and that’s what makes us not just a company but a house with a soul” Explaining why aesthetics is one of the most important pillars of Bovet’s almost-200-year old legacy, Raffy adds: “If I were to ask you to name 10 mechanical features that did not exist 200 years ago, it’s not something you will easily find. Yes, there are advancements and enhancements to those features but a huge majority of what we have today already existed 200 years ago. So where can we make a difference? “Naturally, it’s in the aesthetics. And that’s also why we create a limited number of timepieces with every collection – to keep the designs unique. In fact, by doing so, you offer your collectors more than what they pay for. The majority of Bovet collectors I meet tell me how they appreciate not seeing a Bovet timepiece on everyone’s wrist, which is similar to an art collector’s perspective on acquiring a unique and rare piece of art.” But keeping this tradition alive is no easy task. “It takes at least 60 artisans if you want to do everything in house – we rely on 140. Anything below that and it’s impossible. “There’s so much that goes on behind the scenes when crafting a new collection, right from ideating to prototyping and we do this as a team. The artisans work together as a family and share our philosophy. “Only incredible talent can achieve the watchmaking we have and that’s what makes us not just a company but a house with a soul, with values and a respectable long-term vision. “And I say respectable because you can have money exclusively as a value. Of course, it is a value, but while ensuring your house is wealthy, you also need to make a real contribution to the world, which we do

through our focus on mechanical excellence and aesthetics. And this is also what appeals to our collectors. “Every morning when we wake up, we have something to achieve, something to prove to the world. But a Bovet collector does not adhere to this social code. He doesn’t believe he must own a Bovet timepiece because it’s going to do well. It’s not a trophy for him. “For a true Bovet collector, it’s more refined than this. He is someone who has nothing more to prove in life and has made his choices solely as an appreciation of art,” he adds. Since the brand made its debut in the region, Bovet has only grown, both in popularity and its number of collectors. “The Middle Eastern market is very important to our brand. Thanks to Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons, we’ve managed to build a strong foundation in the region and we are definitely looking into fine tuning our association to better cater to the culture of the Middle East. At least 30 percent of the pieces that are handcrafted every year for local customers are bespoke creations. There is immense appreciation of art here. “But, of course, not every collector might like what he sees. Some might even tell you they don’t like the bow or it’s not their style. But we look at the bigger picture. And it is very rewarding to hear them say that Bovet is indeed the true essence of watchmaking.” Discover more at Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons, The Dubai Mall  04 3398883 or Al Manara International Jewellery, Marina Mall, Abu Dhabi  02 6813232.

All that glitters From something sparkly to complete your ensemble to the ideal gift for Eid, homegrown luxury jewellery brand Mahallati Jewellery has you covered

When the holy month of Ramadan draws to a close, the faithful prepare to celebrate one of the most joyous occasions on the Islamic calendar. Eid Al Fitr sees families get together to ring in the end of the month-long fasting period with much revelry. Naturally, everyone wants to look their best on the occasion and jewellery is the perfect way to elevate any look. Given that presents are also exchanged during the celebrations, there couldn’t be a better time to shop for something sparkly. Homegrown brand Mahallati Jewellery is a local favourite not only when it comes to Eid jewellery but all year round. Mehran Mahallati, vice president of Mahallati Jewellery, tells us: “Our items are very high-end and sometimes people come into the shop just asking for a bag or a box with the Mahallati Jewellery logo on it. For them, it’s like owning a blue Tiffany box. The packaging is iconic. In a way, it’s a status symbol.” Impressive collections of jewellery – from elaborate diamond necklaces to ornate diamond rings – draw crowds of shoppers to Mahallati Jewellery’s boutiques across the city at The Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, Wafi Mall, Dubai Marina Mall and the Gold Souk. The brand also offers some delicate options alongside its more extravagant pieces such as the necklace of floating diamonds. It’s a distinctive design, where the string of precious gems has been meticulously set onto the chain in such a way that they appear to float in place, rather than be held together by prongs or settings. The overall effect is ethereal. Equally stunning is the brand’s Braille Blocks collection, produced in partnership with The Rashid Centre for the Determined Ones, featuring dainty designs with Braille lettering created in glittering diamonds. Mahallati Jewellery is known for meticulously sourcing the rarest and finest gemstones for each piece, making it a popular choice for shoppers in search of bespoke and unique designs. Even the stones used in everyday pieces are rated highly on the GIA scale for their exceptional colour, clarity, cut and carat weight. It is little wonder, then, that their customisation services are highly sought after, not only by everyday consumers but also by luxury shoppers from abroad and even visiting royalty. Rest assured, a visit to Mahallati Jewellery will tick off every item on your Eid wishlist. Discover enticing collections from Mahallati Jewellery this Eid Al Fitr at The Dubai Mall  04 4340585 or Mall of the Emirates  04 3410787.

Osh Dubai

True taste —— La Mer’s newly-opened hotspot Osh Dubai keeps things traditionally Uzbek with an ever-so-subtle modern touch. Chef Sergei Batukov tells us what makes this formula work

When Osh Dubai first opened its doors in La Mer, this beachfront destination was already overflowing with unique dining concepts, offering the very best from the Middle East and beyond. Naturally, it would take something truly spectacular to stand out from the crowd and it seems like Osh Dubai knew just how. We recently met up with executive chef Sergei Batukov, who helms the kitchen not just at Osh Dubai but also Chalet Berezka at The Pointe on Palm Jumeirah. And while bringing Central Asian cuisine to Dubai is at the heart of it all, Batukov tells us what makes Osh a crowd favourite. Read on as he discusses culinary inspirations, dining in Dubai and more... What inspired your interest in the culinary arts? “I’ve always liked food. As a child, I spent a great deal of time with my mother in the kitchen, cooking and learning from her. This inspired me to chase my passion and so I enrolled in culinary school, following which I pursued a diploma as a Food Technology Engineer.” Tell us more about your journey as a chef. “I made my debut in the year 2000 in my hometown of Omsk in Siberia. In 2003, I moved to Moscow to join the team behind the world-renowned Nostalgie restaurant, which is sadly closed now. The kitchens at Nostalgie have seen some amazing chefs at work including Anton Mukhin, Renat Akzamov, Kostya Ivlev and Yura Rashkov. I then spent 10 years working with restaurateur Arkadiy Novikov and his team before finally moving to Dubai.” How was the transition from Moscow to Dubai? “One of my lifelong dreams was to open a restaurant outside Russia to gain international exposure. The opportunity came knocking when Russian developer Anton Viner invited me to head the kitchen for two of his dining concepts in Dubai. Making the shift was a smart decision and I’m proud to head not just one, but two of the most interesting food and beverage projects – Chalet Berezka and Osh Dubai – in a city where every chef wants to make a name .” What was it like stepping out of your comfort zone? “It’s been a great challenge, but I have a brilliant team backing me up. When we began developing the menu, we made it our goal to create classic Uzbek dishes, which are immensely popular in Central Asia, and add our own creative spin to them for a contemporary

When we began developing the menu, we made it our goal to create classic Uzbek dishes touch. We wanted to introduce the cuisine to the world. While the dishes are not too different from what I’m accustomed to, making them adaptable to the Dubai palate has been an interesting task. Also, traditional ingredients are not easily available on this side of the world, making it a bit more challenging. Add to this the fact that around 30 percent of our diners are travellers. An everchanging audience makes feedback slightly difficult.” Give us a glimpse into the kitchens at Osh Dubai. “Contemporary Uzbek dining is the primary focus. It is an attempt to bring Central Asian cuisine to the Middle East and establish a firm footing in Dubai’s dining scene which is brimming with Lebanese, Turkish, Asian and other Middle Eastern specialities which the people love. We also have a selection of international dishes to satiate all tastes, while also offering light and casual fare to guests visiting the beach at La Mer.” What is the primary culinary philosophy followed at the restaurant? “At Osh Dubai, we strongly believe in the pureness and simplicity of every ingredient. With fresh produce flown in exclusively from Uzbekistan on a daily basis, we make sure to treat these with maximum care and minimum interference, allowing the original flavour to shine through.” What can diners look forward to on the menu at Osh Dubai? “You can’t go wrong with our traditional dishes. Try the osh, a classic Uzbek rice preparation – our signature – created using lazar rice. I would also recommend the lamb cheburek, lamb manti and lamb saddle with rosemary jus. Our soup and salad selection is great for those looking to keep things light, while there’s also a spread of grilled meats including shashlik and koftas. Seafood fans will love the ceviches and tempura specialities on offer.”

Tell us more about the overall experience at Osh Dubai. “In terms of cuisine, it is an Oriental journey that might bring to mind the familiar and comforting flavours you find in the kitchen at home. But there are also new combinations to appease even the most discerning diner. When it comes to the ambience, the interiors have a fusion feel with traditional elements in the décor while the views of La Mer in the surrounding area are magnificent. The food and setting come together to create a superior dining experience for each and every guest.” Having spent more than a year in Dubai, what do you have to say about the emirate’s dining scene? “Dubai loves grilled food, whether it’s barbecue by the beach or at a fine-dining venue. There’s a lot of focus on meat, especially those cooked on a charcoal f lame. This past season, I’ve also noticed a growing love for Greek cuisine among Dubai’s foodie crowd with so many establishments opening up. It’s a wonderful global cuisine and it’s finally made its way to Dubai.” So, considering the competition, how do you stay ahead of the game? “By staying true to our Uzbek roots in everything, enhancing traditional practices in our own way and adapting them to the local way of life. We have confidence in our offerings and that helps us gain trust and loyalty.” When you’re not behind the scenes at the restaurant, do you enjoy cooking at home? What’s your go-to dish? “I love it, especially cooking outside, picnic style, where I can grill a variety of meats with interesting sides.” For reservations at Osh Dubai or for more information  04 5260350.

Queen of the Beach

Island soirée —— Dreamy views, tempting bites and creative infusions make Buddha-Bar Beach Abu Dhabi a go-to dining destination in the UAE capital. And during our recent visit to this popular hangout on the shores of Saadiyat Island, we discover what makes it special

The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Abu Dhabi is no ordinary destination, this spectacular retreat goes above and beyond your expectations in every way, leaving you with a fierce urgency to return. During our recent visit to this property in the UAE capital, we discovered what truly sets the resort apart. And when you visit, we’re sure you’ll agree! The sprawling beachfront aside – think powdery white sands and crystal blue waters as far as the eye can see – the hotel is a dining destination in its own right. With a choice of six splendid venues serving up everything from classic Manhattan-style bites to signature Thai fare in a variety of settings, there’s plenty to choose from for every meal. But if something truly exceptional is on your mind, Buddha-Bar Beach Abu Dhabi is not to be missed. In a nutshell, the setting, cuisine and service are all on point. And one visit is all it takes to turn you into a loyal visitor. But from a renowned Parisian brand like Buddha-Bar, can you expect anything less than extraordinary? A name to be reckoned with on the global dining scene, the Abu Dhabi concept is the world’s first permanent Buddha-Bar. While seasonal venues appear every summer in swanky locales from the Maldives to Mykonos, we’re glad this capital hangout is open all year round, serving up the most delicious fare from lunch to supper on the tranquil shores of Saadiyat Island.

Buddha-Bar Beach Abu Dhabi

Buddha-Bar Beach lends itself to a variety of social occasions – whether you’re looking for the ideal lunchtime spot to tuck into some fine fare in between beach dips, ringing in a special celebration with a loved one or simply wanting to wind down your evening with friends while enjoying rounds of cocktails and delectable bites. Add the sights and sounds of the ocean to the mix and you have yourself the ideal setting for a memorable meal. We visited on a Friday evening, after a relaxing afternoon soaking up the sun at the beach and couldn’t have asked for a better ending to our day. You can sense the buzz the moment you walk in with diners eager to try the restaurant’s culinary creations. One of the best ways to begin your meal is by securing a spot at the bar to watch the mixologists in action while they prepare some of the finest cocktails on the island to get you started. And that’s exactly what we did, after a warm welcome from the restaurant’s staff. Seated at the bar counter, we enjoyed every bit of the theatrics behind the scenes, as Alex, our bartender, whipped up two gorgeous-looking drinks after we shared our preferences – sweet for one, stronger for the other – leaving the choice of cocktails to him as the extensive menu is bound to leave you overwhelmed.

The Fifty Shades of Purple – a refreshing blend of sweet nectarine rum, lemon and cranberry juice – is enough to get you through the entire evening. Adding a spin to a classic and giving it a stronger character is the Red Fire Margarita – definitely one for the boys, thanks to the heady Thai-chili-infused tequila which serves as the main spirit. For those looking to keep it going all through the meal, your server will be more than happy to help with pairing suggestions from the extensive wine list. Continuing our evening, we were ushered to a spot on the outdoor deck, overlooking both the beach and the entirety of the venue’s outdoor dining area. Dheeraj, our server, or DJ as he prefers to be known, familiarised us with the menu, highlighting all the signatures we simply had to try. And so we kicked things off with the ever-so-popular BuddhaBar chicken salad, a staple at every Buddha-Bar across the globe. Created using almost 20 different types of ingredients, this classic dish combines tender chicken thighs grilled with five-spice powder, Chinese cabbage and a decadent sesame dressing. We have not been able to stop raving about this one! In fact, with such a generous portion, it is truly one of the most filling salads you can have.

Maguro wasabi ceviche

Next up, we opted for the deep-fried calamari. But first, you should note that quantity is as much a focus as quality is at Buddha-Bar Beach and while you might be tempted to order everything that tickles your taste buds, taking it easy with your order is the smarter choice. But that’s what makes it great if you’re visiting with a large group, the portions are ideal for sharing. Back to our calamari, Buddha-Bar seemed to have the perfect formula to get the batter to a perfect crisp on the outside, keeping the squid incredibly tender and juicy on the inside. Foodie tip: ask for more of the smoky garlic and lemon yoghurt dip – it goes well with everything! Our mains posed a bit of a challenge as the portions were simply too huge for two diners to devour in one sitting, and it won’t matter how hungry you are or how irresistible the flavours might be to your palate. Standing proudly on our table was the Queen of the Beach seafood platter, an enormous serving of 24 different pieces featuring fresh oysters, ceviche bowls, nigiri and sushi rolls. From spicy and crunchy tuna to salmon and avocado rolls, this will be an instant hit with sushi lovers. And for those who believe more is always better, there’s also the King of the Beach platter with twice the number of pieces including king crab legs and razor clams. Although suitably satiated, we made sure to save room for dessert. And although we wanted to keep things light after all that indulgence, our server felt otherwise, presenting us with a large platter of Buddha-Bar Beach’s signature sweet treats. It was like our very own mini buffet on the table with a variety of delicacies that included a trio of cakes from chocolate to cheese and carrot, two different types of ice creams, a delicious coconut sorbet (which was our favourite) and the classic Japanese mochi. All in all, Buddha-Bar Beach saw us enjoy one of our most memorable nights out on the town and we’re sure you will, too! But do book your spot way in advance because tables fill fast here given that not many would like to miss their chance dining in one of the capital’s hottest hangouts. T H E L A S T W OR D

Abdulrahman Hammad

He might boast countless adventures around the globe, but this super traveller tells us why Dubai always remains home

Five years ago, I moved to Dubai from Sharjah. The neighbouring emirate is where I grew up and acquired my education. Right from my early years, I always admired Dubai and its ever-changing skyline. As a university student, I envied my older classmates who graduated and moved to the city to pursue their careers. When it was time for me to join this diverse community, I landed my dream job. It was then that I discovered, life in Dubai is designed to make you stay. To a young graduate looking to break into the corporate realm, Dubai is the regional headquarters for most international companies. To an ambitious person with big dreams, it is one of the easiest places in the world to do business. And to someone with a penchant for all things extraordinary, it is the capital of luxury life. I have been, at some point or another, all of the above. At every stage of my life, I have had something completely different to love about Dubai. At present, it is connectivity. Not only is the UAE within reasonable proximity to the world’s most prominent tourist destinations, but we also enjoy a great choice of f lights to multiple locations around the globe. During my employment with an airline in Dubai, I spent five years befriending people from countries I never heard of, then going to those countries to actually get to know them. My passport grew thicker and was full of visa stamps. That is when I became a travel addict. In 2013, I visited Romania. It was the first time I saw people dance the salsa and came back determined to learn it. And the wonderful thing about Dubai is, no matter what your hobby may be, you will find a place to practice it here. It wasn’t difficult to find a dance school in Dubai. In fact, we also found a number of venues that hosted salsa nights. Similarly, on my trip to Thailand last year, I learnt the art of eight limbs, which is a form of martial arts called Muay Thai. And with ease, I found places to practice it in the emirate, aside from other hobbies I’ve pursued like wakeboarding, horseback riding and surfing (yes, you can surf here). When in Dubai, I enjoy taking my wife to La Mer to get ice cream and watch the sunset as the skyline turns to gold. We also share a love for cycling and you can often find us on the cycling tracks of Al Qudra, on the mountain trails in Hatta and in our newly-discovered escape – Kalba in Sharjah, where you can cycle on the beach with a fat bike. My favourite restaurant in Dubai is Mama’esh. It’s not only the exquisite Middle Eastern food served here but also the outdoor area that reminds me of my grandmother’s house in Jordan. Every day I see people, who come from humble backgrounds just like myself, pursue their own definition of happiness in Dubai. I have travelled to and made friends in many countries and can say with confidence that this is not something you see everywhere. Most people are happy to settle for a job that does not even fit their skill set or passion. They simply lack inspiration. Meanwhile, I am part of a community filled with ambitious and passionate people who transform their dreams into realities. Interacting with them encourages me to do more to reach my full capacity. Three years ago, I was hovering over the edge of resigning from my dream job to finally work independently, as I always wanted. But a friend of mine shared a little piece of advice with me that I’d like to share with you. He said, “Abdulrahman, if there ever was a place to go after your dreams and succeed, that would be Dubai.”
