WELCOME Once known as the Gulf’s “hidden gem”, Oman has well and truly shaken off its low-key image and is a major contender for meetings and incentives. Already home to stunning natural assets that include rugged mountains and pristine beaches, we now have all of the infrastructure in place to welcome visitors from around the world. A prime example is the modern Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre which boasts 22,000 square-metres of exhibition space and 55 meeting rooms. This striking complex has hosted a number of large international conventions already this year and has won several bids that will bring huge numbers to the sultanate in the years to come. The Oman Convention Bureau is working hard to promote our world-class offering and we expect to see significant growth when it comes to attracting corporate visitors. There are also a host of new hotels and resorts in the pipeline that will further strengthen Oman’s hospitality portfolio, making it a top choice among planners. Additionally, it is now even easier to visit Oman thanks to an online visa system and the major expansion works that were recently completed at Muscat International Airport. Oman Air is also growing rapidly and is expected to operate up to 70 aircraft and fly to 60 destinations by 2022. And it is not just the capital that is drawing in visitors, Salalah now has an excellent selection of hotels and a modern airport that is receiving an increasing number of direct flights. With so much to offer, it is no surprise that tourist numbers are continuing to rise and we are confident that the sultanate will achieve its target of attracting 11.7 million international and domestic visitors by 2040. With plans to further diversify the tourism sector and significantly expand our offering, the sultanate is set to thrive in the years ahead. We look forward to welcoming you to our country so you can enjoy an authentic Arabian experience. Khalid Al Zadjali Director, Oman Convention Bureau

Need to know

OMAN

All the essentials for a successful trip to the sultanate Location Oman sits at the east of the Arabian Peninsula, sharing borders with Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Its sprawling coastline edges the Arabian Sea, offering miles of pristine beaches to explore.

Getting there Thanks to an expansion at Muscat International Airport, it’s now even easier to travel to the sultanate. The slick hub can operate 40 flights an hour, with 86 check-in counters, 40 gates and 29 aircraft stands. Visitors can also fly into the southern gateway, Salalah International Airport, while new regional airports have opened in Sohar, in the north of the country, and Duqm towards the central east coast of the sultanate.

• Some residents of Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and UAE do not need a visa if flying direct from their home country. • Tourist visas are valid for use within six months from the date of issuance, allowing a stay in the country for 30 days from the date of entry on a one trip basis. To find out more, visit rop.gov.om

Oman’s calendar There are a host of special celebrations and occasions marked throughout the year with Eid Al Fitr one of the biggest. Coming at the end of Ramadan, the four-day holiday is filled with special gatherings and entertainment, and this year is due to begin on June 5. Other key dates include Eid Al Adha, expected on August 12, and Oman’s National Day celebrations on November 18.

Local culture The basics Arabic is the official language throughout the sultanate, although English is widely spoken, while the religion is Islam. • Oman sits on a timezone which is four hours ahead of GMT and the international country code to dial is +968. • The currency is the Omani Rial (OMR) which is pegged to the US dollar at US$1 = OMR0.39. There are 1,000 Baisas in an Omani Rial. • ATMs are widely available and major credit cards are accepted in larger hotels, restaurants and shops. • A good mobile network is available and you can avoid roaming charges by buying a local SIM, while free Wi-Fi is available at various locations.

Weather Oman is pleasantly warm for eight months of the year. From October to April, temperatures rarely dip below 20°C or exceed 30°C. The hottest months are from May to September. In June and July, the temperature often rises to 40°C. The most popular months to visit are November to March, though even in the height of summer Dhofar remains popular thanks to its more temperate climate.

Arranging a visa It’s best to check before travelling as most international visitors will require a visa to enter Oman. • Single-entry visas, valid for tourism or business, can be obtained prior to arrival by visiting evisa.rop.gov.om.

As a Muslim country, it’s important to respect local customs while visiting. Omanis are not obliged to cover up fully in public, but most wear long, loose, modest clothing and visitors are advised to do the same. Women should cover their head with a light shawl when visiting Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque or traditional rural communities. Things are generally more relaxed in tourist resorts, but visitors are advised to change out of beachwear when leaving the beach or pool.

Where to stay Oman boasts a fantastic choice of world-class hotels with everything from sleek city properties to stunning mountain retreats. Key areas to stay include Muscat and the plush properties dotted along its coastline, while a drive to the northern Musandam Peninsula reveals stunning accommodation options in the heart of the dramatic scenery here. Elsewhere, the pretty oasis of Salalah is home to a fantastic selection of top hotels and is set to welcome a host of international brands in the coming years.

What to see and do One of Oman’s major draws is the wide variety of activities and sights. Visitors can enjoy everything from diving in the crystal clear waters of Musandam and hiking in the soaring Hajar Mountains to haggling at the lively souqs or taking in a performance at Royal Opera House Muscat. With so much to see and do, you’ll want to visit Oman again and again.

Old Muscat & Ruwi Two districts with vastly differing characteristics, one is steeped in history while the other is a thriving commercial hub Separated by just a few kilometres, the neighbourhoods of Old Muscat and Ruwi could not be more different, yet both have much to offer. The former is filled with historic attractions and relics that help tell the story of the country, while the latter is a thriving metropolis abound with shops and restaurants. Protected by a wall that still stands today, Old Muscat comprised the entire capital city of Oman until the 1970s when new developments began to spread outwards at a rapid rate. Now visitors descending on the area will discover a pocket of Old Arabia, complete with traditional architecture, colourful mosques and bustling bazaars. Much of the activity is centred around the lively waterfront. At one time it supported a thriving maritime industry, while today it is a place for visitors to participate in a range of aquatic activities, from scuba diving and dolphin watching to sailing and an array of watersports.

A striking property, it is surrounded by a pair of imposing 16th-century forts, Fort Al Mirani and Al Jalali Fort, which sit atop the cliffs overlooking the Gulf of Oman. From the waterfront corniche that winds through Old Muscat, the neighbouring port district of Muttrah can be explored. Known for its colourful bazaar, Muttrah Souq offers a fascinating insight into Omani markets of a bygone age. It is here that vendors sell wares from across the Arab world. Visitors

Reaching new heights With ambitious plans in place to attract more tourists, Oman’s national airline and state-of-the-art airport will play a crucial role in achieving these lofty goals

Oman Air

For centuries Oman has been an important transcontinental crossroad, a trading hub between east and west and a popular stopover point between Asia, Europe and Africa. However, in more recent times, increased competition from its Gulf neighbours has forced the sultanate to implement new tourism strategies as it bids to once again welcome visitors from all over the world. With a clear goal to attract 11 million visitors annually by 2040, the country is being positioned as a leading destination for highvalue business and leisure visitors. Oman is also sharpening its focus on niche tourism segments, from adventure travellers to group business and, of course, the meetings industry. In order to achieve this target, both the country’s national airline and its most prominent airport are set to play an important role.

The sultanate’s flag carrier, Oman Air has enjoyed plenty of success in recent years and plans are in place for the airline to significantly grow in the coming years. As well as adding to its fleet, it expects to be operating up to 70 aircaft and flying to 60 destinations by 2022. “During 2018 alone, Oman Air added eight state-of-the-art Boeing aircraft, including three Dreamliners, two of which feature the award-winning First Class offering. The current fleet stands at 54 but we are aiming to add 16 more aircraft over the next three to four years,” said Abdulaziz Al Raisi, Oman Air’s Chief Executive Officer. “We have also recently moved crew operations to a new facility in Muscat. We are extremely proud to open this spectacular facility, which has been designed and

built to provide our operating crew with the latest technological advances and the utmost convenience. “Providing Oman Air with a muchneeded facility, it caters to the increasing demand for air travel in the region and will allow us to pursue further opportunities for growth. The Crew Reporting Centre will allow us to meet the challenges of an evertransforming business and to meet the phenomenal growth of both Oman Air and Oman well into the future.” The airline also identified the UK as a key market, appointing two new account managers in the country and creating a host of tailor-made packages to suit the particular requirements of business delegates travelling from Britain to Oman. “With our award-winning first class and business class offering, I

22

believe there is a real opportunity for Oman Air to showcase its offering and attract more business travellers,” said UK country manager Kelpesh Patel. “Growing business travel from the UK is certainly one of our priorities and with an increasing demand of MICE travellers to the sultanate, it is essential that we have dedicated staff at Oman Air to support this.” Having seen passenger growth rise by 17 percent in 2017 and with plans to move into new markets, Al Raisi is confident that the airline will go from strength to strength in the coming years. He added: “Oman Air is constantly looking for ways to enhance its offering with new destinations and direct routes from the hub in Muscat will be announced throughout the coming year. “Our development team is working hard to identify new routes and services that will complement the existing destinations and we have already opened a new route to Athens, while extending our schedule of flights to the Maldives.” To complement the work being done by Oman Air, the country has invested heavily in its airports, with the new Muscat International Airport terminal costing a staggering US$1.8 billion. The expansion, which officially opened in 2018, included a new runway, air traffic control tower and civil aviation building, while the passenger capacity rose from 1.2 million to 12 million. This was far from the only investment however, with Salalah Airport opening in 2017 at a cost of US$950 million, while Duqm Airport cost US$235 million and officially

“Providing Oman Air with a much-needed facility, it caters to the increasing demand for air travel in the region and will allow us to pursue further opportunities for growth”

Muscat International Airport

opened this year. Currently linked only to Muscat, the new facility is capable of handling an A380 – one of the biggest passenger aircrafts available. “The airport is currently linked to Muscat through flights. However, we have built this airport to be an international airport so that we can attract international flights if there is demand from certain countries or airports. It can also serve private jets for investors who want to come directly to Duqm,” said Ahmed Al Futaisi, Minister of Transport and Communications.

While the addition of airports in Salalah and Duqm open up the sultanate to more visitors, it is the substantial expansion of Muscat International Airport that is expected to have the biggest impact. “The new terminal offers a significant boost to Oman’s already flourishing travel sector and means that Oman Air now provides a thoroughly enhanced service from its Muscat hub,” added Al Raisi. “The airport has played a pivotal role in welcoming travellers to the sultanate and as the national carrier to Oman this will certainly increase as the destination garners wider international interest. “With the capacity to facilitate 12 million passengers per year and the world’s largest aircraft, Muscat International Airport is vital to the future to the destination, and Oman Air looks forward to bringing more visitors to the sultanate.”

A healthy outlook With a focus on sustainable growth, Oman is continuing to ramp up its already impressive proposition while at the same time preserving its rich culture and heritage

In recent years Oman has invested heavily in numerous projects to help bolster its tourism sector. A new international airport was built in Salalah, there was a major expansion to Muscat International Airport and a modern convention centre was constructed to help the sultanate compete for major conferences. Yet, these are far from the only ventures the sultanate is undertaking as it looks to attract 11 million international visitors annually by 2040. There are more than 50 hotels set to be constructed in the coming years, a new urban development is set to transform the face of Muscat and a new e-visa system has been introduced in order to make it even easier for tourists to visit the country. Oman’s Ministry of Tourism is also spearheading a new phase of activity that includes promoting the country to both leisure and business tourists around the world. “We are making great strides in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) sector. The selection of Oman as the official partner of ITB Berlin 2020 - the world’s largest travel trade show – is one of the recent achievements in this regard,” said Asma Al Hajry, Assistant Director General of International Tourism Promotions. Mosque of the Great Prophet, Muscat

“We are making great strides in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) sector. The selection of Oman as the official partner of ITB Berlin 2020 - the world’s largest travel trade show – is one of the recent achievements in this regard” “We are confident that this partnership will help us draw major attention to our country as a holiday destination, with so much to offer tourists. We believe that these endeavours will increase Oman’s attractiveness before a wider global audience in 2020. “The launch of an e-visa portal last year and relaxed visa rules are also helping to facilitate ease of entry. New tourist e-visas, introduced this year, allow tourists to stay for up to 10 days, one month or even a year.”

With Oman set to welcome a growing number of visitors, the hospitality sector in the sultanate is set to grow substantially. “In terms of properties, 55 hotels are expected to begin construction or are currently being constructed within this year and next year. This will add another 4,763 hotel rooms to the sector, with the opening of JW Marriott at Madinat Al Irfan at the Oman Conference and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) adding 305 more rooms,” said Al Hajry. “This property will complement our MICE sector growth thanks to 1,200 square metres of function space, two grand ballrooms and six meeting and board rooms. Furthermore, Jumeirah Muscat Bay is another major hotel set to open this year, with its launch expected in the fourth quarter of 2019. “The f ive-star property has been designed as a retreat on the waterfront, with the aim of offering guests luxury amidst nature. There is also the 150-room Mandarin Oriental Muscat and 155 residences at Mandarin Oriental, expected to open in 2021.”

Madinat Al Irfan

“The project is of extreme importance in the light of Oman’s national economic diversification agenda and reflects Omran’s strategic role as a catalyst for investments that forms robust partnerships with developers” Welcoming the World One of the most important projects currently under development in the sultanate is the construction of Madinat Al Irfan. Set to be built over 20 years at a cost of US$12.9 billion, the project will span across 4.5 million square metres of land adjacent to OCEC and is set to become a new downtown area for Muscat. A joint venture between Oman Tourism Development Company (Omran) and Dubai-based real estate developer Majid Al Futtaim, the mixed-use development will

feature 11,000 residential units, 100,000 square metres of retail space, 700,000 square metres of office space and several cultural and lifestyle offerings. “The project is of extreme importance in the light of Oman’s national economic diversification agenda and reflects Omran’s strategic role as a catalyst for investments that form robust partnerships with developers. Such ventures will lead to the development of sustainable urban destinations and the generation of significant socio-economic benefits for the sultanate. It is also expected to create

Mutrah Corniche

more than 30,000 direct and indirect jobs in the country,” said Al Hajry. Madinat Al Irfan is also expected to help OCEC attract even more conferences and exhibitions in the coming years. The state-ofthe-art centre has already hosted 291 events since it opened two years ago and has significantly contributed to the sultanate’s business sector growth. “OCEC has already secured some large conferences, including SICOT 2019, World Hospital Congress 2019 and World Cancer Congress 2020, among many others. These will bring in more than 40,000 visitors until 2024.” added Al Hajry. Oman’s aviation sector is playing an equally important role in attracting record numbers to the country. The sultanate’s national airline, Oman Air, has invested heavily in its fleet and is carefully identifying new flight paths, while US$1.8 billion was spent constructing a new terminal at Muscat International Airport. This expansion helped the airport post record numbers in 2018 and increased the capacity to 20 million passengers per year. There is also the potential for a further extension that would see the capacity rise to more than 50 million passengers per annum in the next decade.

28

4/18/19 4:29 PM

“The fact that the airport recorded more than 11 million passengers in the period of January through to September 2018, a 9.8 percent increase over the same period last year, is extremely encouraging. We envision the airport’s capacity to be adequate until 2028 as the new terminal is designed to accommodate up to 56 million passengers per annum,” said Al Hajry. “The passenger numbers at the airport have been growing consistently since 2012 at an average rate of 13.3 percent per year, including the first nine months of 2018. If this pace of growth continues, the new terminal will reach its capacity in 2028. “We also expect easy connectivity and ease of travel to cement the airport’s position as a hub, in addition to encouraging more tourists. Oman Air has launched new destinations this year, connecting the sultanate to Moscow, Casablanca and Istanbul, and the Khasab Castle, Musandam

route network has so far been selective, with a special focus on the Middle East, East Africa, Southeast Asia and Western Europe. “Ultimately, all of these developments will play vital roles in attracting more and more holiday-makers to Oman.”

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

A Proud Heritage Alongside the large-scale developments taking place in the country, Oman is ensuring it still places an emphasis on its natural assets and cultural attractions. “The recently developed Oman Tourism Strategy (OTS) has recognised and highlighted the importance of preservation and sustainability of the local environment, as tourism develops at a rapid pace. Two aspects of the environment have been identified: natural and cultural,” revealed Al Hajry. “Firmly rooted in its proud heritage and history of seafaring, trading, and exploration, Oman’s long-standing traditions merge seamlessly with modern times, thus offering visitors a genuine blend of ageless Arabian tradition and modernism. Travellers can even see the latest fashion and electronics brands sold alongside traditional handmade crafts and jewellery at souqs around the country, which reflects the diversity and richness of this culture. “Oman’s architecture is also reflective of this diversity. For instance, the Royal Opera House Muscat, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and well-preserved villages and attractions like the National Museum, old forts and watchtowers like Bahla Fort, and several UNESCO World Heritage Sites – are all icons

Royal Opera House Muscat

“Ultimately, all of these developments will play vital roles in attracting more and more holiday-makers to Oman” that offer glimpses into the heritage and culture of this country. The fact that there is no dearth of attractions and grand cultural symbols help us maintain a keen focus in promoting them in most apt ways.” Promoting the country as a diverse destination which encompasses everything from the beach and luxury to culture and adventure is helping to attract visitors. Oman’s Ministry of Tourism is participating in leading international trade shows and are opening up offices in new markets as they aim to hit the target of 11 million international visitors that was envisioned within the Oman Tourism Strategy 2040. “We remain keen on identifying and participating in trade shows, which we utilise to create awareness of Oman’s varied tourism offering. We also organise familiarisation trips throughout the year, and these target social influencers, media and trade companies that eventually report their trips in their respective platforms and promote Oman in these markets,” said Al Hajry. “This has proved very successful, as has the establishment of eight international representative offices in the GCC, U, Ireland, Italy, France, Switzerland, Holland, India and Germany. We’ve also opened a office in Russia and are gearing up to explore new markets such as China and the United States.”

A catalyst for change Oman’s largest-ever development project is set to become a magnet for business visitors and a must-visit destination for leisure tourists

For a number of years Oman has watched its Gulf neighbours transform vast stretches of barren desert into modern cities complete with towering skyscrapers and futuristic structures. Now, the sultanate has launched its own ambitious project, named Madinat Al Irfan, which is set to become a new urban centre within the capital of Muscat. On first glance it would seem Oman has taken inspiration from the large-scale urban developments that can be found throughout the Middle East. Dubbed Muscat’s ‘city of the future’, the area will be home to five-star hotels, residential properties, restaurants, shops and an entertainment complex. However, in contrasting fashion to a number of modern projects in the region, there will also be a focus on preserving the country’s rich heritage and culture. A point

that Peter Walichnowski, CEO of Oman Tourism Development Company (Omran), believes will be vitally important to the success of the development. He explains: “We are committed to building the country’s growing tourism sector without losing the authenticity of Oman’s values and well-preserved heritage. Though the project’s vision is to create a modern urban destination, there will be elements of traditional architecture and a scale which is not high-rise-high-density but more in keeping with Oman’s low-rise urban fabric. “Once completed, Madinat Al Irfan will be a destination that offers a harmonious fusion of both old and new, which will be complemented by the year-round sunshine and unsurpassed warmth and hospitality the Omanis are very well known for.”

A joint venture between Omran and Dubai-based Majid Al Futtaim, Madinat Al Irfan is an important development as Oman seeks to diversify its economy away from a reliance on the oil and gas sectors. In line with Oman Vision 2040, which underpins the tourism sector as a crucial economic accelerator, the mixed-use metropolis will not only benefit those living in the sultanate, but will also attract visitors from across the globe. “The National Tourism Strategy 2040 is at the core of our operating framework and we work hand in hand with The Ministry of Tourism to achieve its goals,” says Walichnowski. “The strategy primarily aims at achieving four objectives: boosting tourist arrivals into the country; building up the nation’s tourism infrastructure; creating employment for Omanis and generating opportunities for SME’s to participate in the tourism sector. Madinat Al Irfan supports all four of these objectives.” With a Wadi Park at its spine, a host of public spaces and no shortage of hospitality options, the sprawling development is set to become a centre for leisure tourists. It is also expected to attract huge numbers of business visitors thanks to Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre (OCEC) being at the heart of the new city. Recently upgraded, the venue

“OCEC is projected to contribute close to US$390 million to GDP by 2030, 30 percent of which will be from tourism revenues and it is continuously growing its exhibition portfolio to attract regional and international conventions” features five exhibition halls, two auditoriums, 20 meeting rooms, a VIP pavilion and two ballrooms. There will also be two hotels directly connected to the convention centre, providing a host of options for those attending exhibitions and events. The Crowne Plaza Muscat OCEC is already open, while a 305-key JW Marriot Muscat is set to be completed later this year. An Ibis Styles hotel will also open in the larger precinct in the next two years, with all three properties adding 880 keys to Oman’s tourism market. With the developments just a few minutes away from Muscat International Airport, the hope is that both OCEC and Madinat Al Irfan can help Oman compete on a regional level when it comes to attracting large events and representatives from the MICE industry.

4

“The development of the MICE industry in Oman is an integral part of the National Tourism Strategy 2040 and the country’s investment in tourism and hospitality is projected to be around US$50 billion over the next two decades. The OCEC precinct is going to stand out on both a regional and global level as Madinat Al Irfan continues to develop and we are confident that the sultanate will continue to be placed on the global MICE map,” adds Walichnowski. “OCEC is a state-of-the-art complex and will play a major role in competing against global players in the market at bids to host conferences. For example, in 2016, it was announced that Muscat will be the next city

to host the World Cancer Congress in 2020, bringing the conference to the Middle East for the first time. This is testament to the OCEC’s offering, and we are expecting it to have brought together 40,000 visitors from around the world by 2024.” These conference wins will prove vital if Oman is to reach its goal of attracting 11 million visitors by 2040, while the completion of Madinat Al Irfan will also have an important role to play. And Walichnowski firmly believes that Muscat’s new metropolis, combined with Oman’s unique offering, will see the sultanate welcome record numbers of tourists in the coming years. He says: “OCEC is projected to contribute close to US$390 million to GDP by 2030, 30 percent of which will be from tourism revenues and it is continuously growing its exhibition portfolio to attract regional and international conventions. Madinat Al Irfan’s complete development will positively contribute even further to economic development by delivering more hospitality and urban lifestyle offers. “The number of visitors to Oman nearly doubled between 2013 and 2017, and this is testament to the efforts being made by the government and its partners. Our plans are strategically aligned with the National Tourism Strategy 2040 and Madinat Al Irfan will certainly have a positive effect on the number of inbound tourists travelling to the sultanate. “Oman will also continue to capitalise on the unique offering it is known for – its stunning natural landscape, coastline stretches, mountains, fjords, deserts and villages that embrace the authentic hospitality of Oman and its people.”

A warm welcome Destination Management Companies are helping to showcase all Oman has to offer to the rest of the world

Saud Al Junaidy Assistant General Manager, National Travel & Tourism (NTT)

How did NTT Oman get started? National Travel & Tourism (NTT) is one of the oldest travel companies in the sultanate of Oman, starting out in the airline ticketing business in the 1970s. We introduced a destination management division in the early ‘90s and now have close to three decades of experience in this area. We have separate divisions for leisure & adventure tours, group tours, MICE services and the cruise segment, and our qualified team of professionals possess experience in all aspects of travel arrangements. We also have the largest fleet of vehicles in the sultanate through our HERTZ franchise.

What are some of the standout aspects that make Oman unique? It is diverse in nature and offers the true Arabian experience where the heritage and culture is visible through its people, food, architecture and landscape. In terms of

natural diversity, Oman offers more than 3,000 kilometres of pristine beaches, versatile mountain ranges, enchanting deserts and beautiful wadis. It can offer a unique experience to any tourist, whether they are seeking cultural insights, adventure and adrenaline, sea life and much more.

What would you say are some of the country’s hidden gems? The brightest gem within Oman are its people. Any guest in our country will be welcomed with a smile and they will truly understand the concept of Arabian hospitality when they visit Oman.

What does Oman have to offer business guests and incentive travel groups? For incentive travel and business guests, Oman has much to offer. There is a wide range of hotels covering all categories which will offer the required convenience and location to meet all budgetary needs. These hotels also boast state-of-the-art meeting rooms that are ideal for a range of events. For incentive travel, the natural diversity and rich cultural

offering in Oman means there are plenty of unique experiences that cater to all types of corporate guests.

What are some of the changes you predict in Oman’s tourism industry in the years to come? Oman will continue to be a booming tourism destination as the world unravels its potential. The Government of Oman and many foreign investors are spending billions of dollars to contribute towards the tourism infrastructure which includes new hotels, integrated tourism complexes (ITCs), the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre and the revamping of Sultan Qaboos Port for cruise ships. These along with other mega-events within the region like the Expo 2020 will give a big boost to Oman as a tourist destination.

Can you tell us the top three sites, attractions, or experiences a visitor should not miss when in the sultanate? There are so many sites, however, I will mention some places and experiences which I personally love. The Mohammed Al Ameen Mosque in Bausher, Muscat is a must visit and I’d always recommend staying overnight at Wahiba Sands. Jabal Shams Balcony Walk is another great experience, while having a traditional lunch or dinner with an Omani family is not to be missed.

thousand tales. It was the birthplace of the Queen of Sheba, the final resting place of the Prophet Job and the home and port of the famous fictional adventurer, Sinbad the Sailor. Aside from the history, Oman also boasts some spectacular mountain scenery and colourful villages that are great for outdoor explorers. The beaches are also excellent, while the countryside is dotted with forts that are centuries old.

4

Are there any areas off the beaten track that you would recommend visiting? There is an abundance of hidden treasure in Oman, from the grand forts and exquisite palaces to the mystical souks in the capital of Muscat. But I would always recommend tours of both the vast desert and the mountains. The latter offers the chance to explore freshwater wadis and offers breathtaking views.

What do you think makes Oman such a unique destination? To start with, Oman has a rich history that dates all the way back to 3,000 BCE, so the sultanate’s unspoilt land could tell a

The variety of experiences together with our excellence and innovation result in infinite incentive tour and travel possibilities for all budgets and interests.

Do you feel as though the tourism industry will change in the years to come?

With Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre now fully open, Muscat is becoming more and more popular. There are also first-class hotels opening in the capital that are within close proximity of the facility, making it

easily accessible for delegates. Therefore, we foresee tremendous growth in the MICE industry, particularly in 2020 when Dubai hosts Expo 2020 and the whole region is promoted.

What are your favourite places to visit? There are so many to choose from, but I love visiting Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque when I am in Muscat. Also, Nizwa souq is a great place to visit, especially on a Friday when it has a cattle market. Lastly, I like to travel into the mountains as they are absolutely majestic and there are so many areas that I have yet to fully explore.

The sultanate’s landmark venue has already won 22 international and regional congresses, attracting even more business visitors to the heart of Muscat. Developed by Oman Tourism Development Company, the venue’s striking design adds an extra special touch with its spectacular roof designed to resemble the Sultan Qaboos Rose, which was named after Omani royalty. Situated in a picturesque precinct, just four kilometres from Muscat International Airport, the striking venue overlooks a waterway and a lush green nature reserve. W it h i n t he venue , O CEC embraced the latest design techniques, with the interiors offering a seamless blend of contemporary features and traditional Arabian influences. There are 55 meeting rooms and 22,000 square-metres of exhibition space for planners to choose from, while all the infrastructure needed to host large-scale events is closeby. The Crowne Plaza OCEC is located adjacent to the centre and boasts 296 rooms and six dining outlets, while the JW Marquis Muscat, slated to open this year, will also be connected to the venue. For HE Mohsin Bin Khamis Al Balushi, Adviser at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and Chairman of OCEC company, a subsidiary of Omran, the impressive offering and appointment of Said Salim Said Al-Shanfari means OCEC will go from strength to strength. He said: “Oman is now on the world map as one of the top tourist destinations and we are confident in appointing Said Al-Shanfari to lead OCEC towards its vision of introducing Oman as a world-class destination for business events. PLAY | History & Culture

Land of plenty A magical mix of historical gems and a rich cultural offering means Oman’s appeal is going from strength to strength When it comes to business tourism, Oman is fast emerging as one of the region’s major contenders. Able to offer excellent infrastructure, world-class venues and an array of experiences tailor-made for incentive travel, the sultanate presents the full package. Boasting a storied history as a trading centre linking east to west, Oman has long served as a well-connected hub, and this is all the more true today with sophisticated airports, excellent infrastructure and a prosperous national airline. The country lies within

seven hours flight time of around 50 percent of the world’s population, while the newly upgraded Muscat International Airport has won numerous awards following its expansion. For planners, the country offers some outstanding venues, from the impressive Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre to the many meeting spaces peppered throughout a thriving hotel portfolio. As the county continues to transform it is intent on ensuring its historical assets are preserved for generations to come. The

sultanate’s colourful history can be traced back to the Stone Age, and like many Gulf states, it started out as a fishing village inhabited by local tribes before undergoing an astonishing transformation in the decades that followed. Home to five UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Oman also has a number of iconic mosques, forts, museums and ancient settlements that provide an amazing insight into the local culture. For planners wishing to build meaningful experiences into their itinerary, the destination won’t fail to impress.

MUSCAT The country’s heritage heartland, Muscat may have evolved into a modern capital but its historic charms have been carefully preserved. Despite a fast pace of change, the city retains much of its historic charm with the buildings required to be no taller than 10 storeys to ensure the dramatic Al Hajar Mountain backdrop takes centre stage. There are also a host of cultural finds that should feature on any itinerary.

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque A stunning example of modern Islamic architecture, this striking mosque was a gift to the nation in 2001 from Oman’s ruler, His Highness Sultan Qaboos, to mark the 30th year of his reign. One of the largest mosques in the region, vast quantities of red marble define the structure, while architectural and decorative touches are inspired by Omani, Persian and Egyptian influences. Open to non-Muslims, a tour is a great group activity and a wonderful way to gain an insight into local life. Furnished with the second-largest hand-loomed Iranian carpet in the world, the masterpiece took 600 women four years to weave, while there are more than 35 dazzling Swarovski crystal chandeliers, suspended from a 50-metre-high domed ceiling beneath which there is space for 20,000 worshippers.

to Arabesque-themed shows. The stunning building is itself a draw, clad in white sandstone and taking its design inspiration from the traditional architecture of Oman’s historic forts and castles. Planners have much to consider here too, with the main auditorium a multi-purpose 1,100-seat facility designed to accommodate a dynamic choice of events. There are also two spacious entrance lobbies, while the palatial Grand Hall features a double stairway and timber ceiling with gilded carving. The venue is ideal for conferences, product launches and meetings, offering seven event spaces with the latest tech solutions. The extensive gardens are also popular for private receptions or gala dinners of up to 200 people. For planners looking for the complete package, it’s also possible to pair an event or meeting with a performance to really make the most of this spectacular venue.  rohmuscat.org.om 1

Muttrah Souq For a group activity with a difference, a visit to this colourful marketplace is a must while in town. Its labyrinthine alleyways are lined with small, wooden-roofed boutiques selling everything from Oriental spices and perfumes to handmade keepsakes. One of the most popular markets in the Middle East, Muttrah Souq is one of the region’s oldest and a fantastic way to soak up some local culture.  omantourism.gov.om

Old Muscat Clustered around a small bay to the east of Muscat and surrounded by mountains is the capital’s old town where several historical buildings of note can be found. The stunning Al Alam Palace was built in 1972 and is the ceremonial residence of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said. As such it is not open to the public, but visitors can take a stroll around the lush gardens. Also here are two ancient forts which date back to the 16th century, Jalali and Mirani. This is the place to come to see the traditional Omani carved doors, which are famed the world over, while there are also excellent examples of woven carpets, pottery and military memorabilia. Located on a mountain overlooking the harbour, this is a serene spot to visit after a busy day in the capital.  omantourism.gov.om

Bahla Fort

National Museum of Oman Since opening its doors in 2016, this landmark cultural hub in the heart of Muscat takes visitors on a journey through the sultanate’s history, from the first settlements two million years ago, to the present day. There are 14 galleries to explore here, including the Land and the People Gallery, the Maritime History Gallery and the Splendours of Islam Gallery. There are immersive digital experiences to enjoy, while a fully equipped Learning Centre and ultra-high definition cinema add to the offering. For planners, it’s worth noting that the venue has been designed as a multipurpose space to host temporary exhibitions, as well as a wide range of corporate events.

Just two hours from Muscat is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Bahla Fort, dating back to 500 BCE. Carefully preserved over the years, the fort boasts towers, mosques and wells, while the oldest part is a five-story collection of rooms. Visitors can see the areas where the traditional souqs were within the fort, as well as the houses and chambers in this excellent representation of traditional Omani architecture.

NIZWA Tucked away beneath the Western Hajar mountains is this ancient city that is easily one of the country’s most picturesque spots. Its cool, fertile valleys make for a lush landscape to explore while the historic buildings are well worth a visit.

 omantourism.gov.om

Nizwa Fort Bait Al Zubair Museum Once the home of the esteemed Zubair family, this private museum takes visitors back in time to life in Oman centuries ago. Fascinating exhibits include ancient weapons, jewellery, traditional dress and artworks. Rare photographs, prints and maps add to the experience while a library and falaj irrigated water system offer unique insights into important aspects of Omani culture.

A one-day trip from Muscat that is great for groups, Nizwa Fort dates back to the 17th century when it was built to defend the area which was in a key position for caravan trading routes. The city views from the rooftop are spectacular while inside knowledgeable guides bring the fort’s history to life. There is also a permanent exhibition illustrating the geographical history of Oman and the fort’s significance.  omantourism.gov.om

Jabrin Castle Famed as one of the most beautiful castles in the sultanate, this ancient structure dates back to 1675. A strong cultural connection can be felt throughout the castle, stemming from its creator Imam Bil’arab Bin Sultan of the Ya’ruba dynasty who was a lover of the arts and poetry. As a result, etchings and decorations, ancient paintings, Koranic verse and some lines of poetry can still be seen on the walls.  omantourism.gov.om

SALALAH The lush, green lands of Salalah are a major draw for international visitors, while the historic lands are also home to archaeological sites that are well worth exploring.

Frankincense Trail Central to Salalah’s storied past is its Frankincense Trail, which brings to life a time when

Oman was renowned the world over for its frankincense trees. A major source of income for the sultanate, the trade attracted merchants from far and wide. Salalah is the starting point for group tours of the trail, taking in the frankincense trees of Wadi Dawkah, as well as the once strategic ports of Khor Rori and Al-Baleed. Archaeological sites of note along the way include the UNESCO-recognised ancient cities of Sumhuran and Ubar.  omantourism.gov.om

Al Marnif Cave Just 40 minutes from Salalah is the picturesque Al Marnif Cave, which overlooks the Arabian Sea from Mughsail beach. The spot is home to the Al Mughsail blowholes, a natural phenomenon resulting from the momentum of the water surging into the cavities of rock that lie mostly underwater. In monsoon season, the running water rips through the cavities, resulting in water surges that make for a dramatic scene.  omantourism.gov.om

SOHAR The ancient capital of Oman, to the north of the sultanate, was once a maritime stronghold

and a hub for trade with Asia. Nowadays, it’s a treasure trove of cultural finds.

Sohar Fort and Museum One of the city’s most prominent features on the skyline, located along the corniche, Sohar Fort dates back to the 14th century. Within its distinctive whitewashed exterior, the fort features an interactive museum with exhibits that chart the area’s development down the decades. The fort has been undergoing renovation works, so best to check in advance before visiting.  omantourism.gov.om

AL QABIL Lying to the northeast of the sultanate is Al Qabil which offers a true sense of Oman’s heritage and is peppered with historic villages.

Village life Al Qabil provides insight into Omani village life, with most residents engaged in traditional industries and handicrafts. Spinning, palm-frond weaving, knitting and metalwork are all staples here and for incentive experiences that are one-of-a-kind, this is the place to come.  omantourism.gov.om
