Reach for the StarWalker ——

Montblanc relaunched its StarWalker collection of writing instruments in Houston, featuring a trip to NASA and the Lone Star Flight Museum. Hugh Jackman and Diane Kruger mingled among guests that included our very own Rob Nicholas

Writing instruments are the bedrock of the 113-year old Montblanc brand and the StarWalker collection has been a popular modern incumbent since its introduction in 2003. Inspired by space and the stars, it was fitting that the relaunch would take place in the home of Mission Control for some of the world’s most notable space missions. And on the 50th anniversary of its most famous feat – the Apollo 11 moon landing. Space and rockets are an obsession that few boys ever grow out of. From dinosaurs and army figures, we progress to a wonder of the wider universe and the possibilities of once venturing to where few have been. The desire to be an astronaut must feature on the ambitions of many a child – me included – but with just a handful of serving astronauts at NASA, it goes without saying that few ever make it. Male, female, journalists and influencers alike were excited about the prospect of a trip to NASA, which featured on the launch itinerary for the new StarWalker writing instrument. It was the most inspiring educational trip I’ve taken in the last 30 years – and I learned more than on any school outing I can remember. From the speed that the international space station travels around the earth (17,150 miles per hour in case you are wondering), to the number of sunrises that the astronauts see in a 24-hour period (16 – one every 92 minutes), it was an enlightening insight into man’s adventures into space and the science that makes it all possible. The journey to becoming an astronaut is a difficult one. Few qualify for training that lasts two years and then fewer may make final selection. Boxes that need to be ticked for graduation include expert piloting skills, engineering skills, mathematical wizardry, lightning-quick thinking to enable you to problem solve as you multitask – oh, and of course, the ability to speak fluent Russian in order to be able to communicate with Russian Mission Control (which manages the journeys to and from the International Space Station).

Mission Control Centre at NASA

The signature visual is an astronaut floating in space showing a yearning for home as he reaches for the Earth Besides the intellectual requirements, space travellers need to have a sense of self that allows them to be thousands of miles from home in close-quarter company with other astronauts while accepting that their working day will be micromanaged and scrutinised by Mission Control in five-minute increments. Yes, really. With the cost of sending one astronaut to the space station currently standing at US$80 million a seat – time in space is a lot of money. Leroy Chiao is among NASA’s most accomplished astronauts. His achievements include participating in four space missions, including the command of Expedition 10, where he lived on board the International Space Station from October 13, 2004 to April 24, 2005. His latest success is becoming the inspiration for the new Montblanc collection. One of the friendliest and most accommodating men you could meet, Chiao is both humble and passionate in equal measure, and he is a fitting new ambassador for the brand. A series of animated stories have been created that are the campaign visuals for the new StarWalker collection. These were the result of a collaboration with Korean illustrator Jaehoon Choi, Leroy Chiao, and the brand, to evoke the emotions felt from space and provide a new perspective both on the Earth and the new product. Before attending the launch I looked up Choi’s works and found it to be very unique, but also quite abstract in its approach. This left me wondering what to expect before the campaign visuals were officially released. It was

also something I put to Montblanc CEO, Nicolas Baretzki, when we met and I asked how the process had worked out. Baretzki explained: “In the end, of course, it was quite complicated to bring together a lot of different notions. Even though Choi is quite abstract, if you see what he has been doing for Montblanc, it goes a little bit outside of his natural expression and he has really adapted to what the maison is all about. What I like about Choi is his unique approach using a technique of dots and lines. “If you think of space and of putting a picture of an astronaut and the world into it, it doesn’t really work. We had to do something different and more sophisticated. “Our approach with the image of our beautiful blue planet and the illustration of the astronaut looking back on it, and the fact that this is combined with true stories, really adds a lot to the narrative of the StarWalker launch,” said Baretzki. Now revealed, the illustrations are simple and effective. The signature visual is an astronaut floating in space with his body posture showing a yearning for home as he reaches for the Earth. The launch event was hosted at the Lone Star Flight Museum, which is an impressive venue itself. However, the museum was only used for an initial cocktail reception and to host the red carpet photos. A temporary event structure was used outside on the grounds for the main celebration and this created a big wow factor. Resembling the half dome on the cap of the writing instrument and bearing the Montblanc star, it was used to create a unique environment as L to R: Diane Kruger and Winnie Harlow

collection focused on exploration, to the StarWalker’s planet theme. I asked if this is becoming more of a core narrative for the brand or just for these products. Baretzki replied: “It’s more of a narrative and concept that we are adopting as a brand. When you see all that’s happening in the world, we believe a lot in sustainability. This is deep in the DNA of the maison. It’s a natural evolution for us. People and education have been a consistent theme, which makes sense for a company that makes writing instruments. Planet and people are what we are now focusing on and you will also see something new from us on sustainability in the near future.” The culmination of the event left the audience in space as “Rocketman” played and the words of the song popped up all over the surface of the structure. The audience was left in awe and wonder as many sang the words as they celebrated the launch. Describing the new collection, Baretzki explained: “The new StarWalker is really aimed at becoming the second iconic writing instrument collection from Montblanc, but in a very different aspect from our classic Meisterstuck. More of an engineering piece, with an innovative and modern design. This is very interesting for a younger customer that is less classic and wants something more edgy and cool. “It is only 16 years after the original StarWalker collection, but we thought it was time to bring it back to something more solid and a bit more pure also. We didn’t change the story – but it’s a different approach that is more consistent to what we believe in today with Montblanc.”

Astronaut’s helmet and glove

“People and education have been a consistent theme, which makes sense for a company that makes writing instruments” projection was used inside to bring the surface to life. Nature, landscape and cityscapes immersed the room. Hugh Jackman and Diane Kruger always leave audiences awestruck. Even more so when they mingle right next to you. But on this occasion, Jackman was the facilitator rather than the star, while he and Baretzki asked questions of Chiao and set the scene for the new product and the campaign that supports it. This was an interesting three-way act that also offered a new perspective that challenged the norm. Chiao’s authenticity shone through, as did that of Jackman and Baretzki. Everyone was excited to be part of this really unique approach and their energy filled the room. The thrust of the campaign narrative was offering a new perspective. At the event, Chiao explained how the fascination with space is replaced with a wonder at the earth when you gaze back. A realisation of its fragility and the sudden longing to be home, which he said was unexpected until he experienced it. I talked to Baretzki about the new approach to messaging we have seen from Montblanc in recent launches. From the new 1858 timepiece

The new collection The new StarWalker collection expresses the wonder of being part of one of humankind’s most mysterious and powerful adventures: space exploration. The black precious resin of the writing instrument recalls the dark vast expanse of space, while the translucent dome beneath the emblem evokes the Earth rising above the lunar horizon as seen from the moon, a reminder to appreciate our planet. The polished platinumcoated cap and barrel represent the astronaut. The angled clip cover and dome resembles the shape of a space rocket, while the cap screw mechanism on the forepart and cone is similar to an astronaut securing their helmet to a spacesuit before setting off into space. One of the very first sights that capture your attention while driving to Louvre Abu Dhabi is the iconic silver dome of the museum. It’s quite unlike anything you’ve ever seen before, gleaming majestically against the backdrop of the blue waters of Saadiyat Island. A brilliant feat of engineering by the Pritzker Architecture Prizewinning Jean Nouvel, the dome appears to float above the whitewalled buildings, thanks to hidden support pillars. A beacon of art and culture, standing proudly under the Abu Dhabi sun, that first glimpse of the museum conveys that the experiences waiting inside will be nothing less than extraordinary. And that is just what you feel standing beneath its filigreed crown to witness the ‘rain of light’ created by rays of the sun filtering through the many layers of the dome. The effect casts dapples on the minimalist walls and floors of the museum and was inspired by the way sunlight streams in through the gaps in palm-frond roofs in this part of the world. Its 55 interconnected buildings, 23 of which are art galleries, also draw inspiration from the traditional Middle Eastern medina, which is a series of narrow alleys and plazas, moving from light to shade and back again.

It is little wonder then that this iconic destination that houses some of the world’s most prominent artwork, is an ever-evolving masterpiece in itself. Water characterises the meandering from building to building. Artistic, symbolic and functional, its ingenious use captures the essence of the island location of Louvre Abu Dhabi while also shining a light on the important role that the sea has played in the UAE’s history. The Emirati institution was established as a result of an intergovernmental agreement between Abu Dhabi and France. Dubbed ‘a universal museum in the Arab world’, it has already achieved much in the first two of its 30 planned years in the UAE capital. Today, it is home to hundreds of artworks and artefacts ranging from prehistoric to contemporary times and the inventory of new acquisitions hardly seems to cease. And there are many more on the way, especially now, that Louvre Abu Dhabi has ushered in a new season dedicated to the entire spectrum of art. The museum is supported by contributions from Agence FranceMuseums, a gathering of 17 of France’s most prestigious institutions, and this has helped cement Abu Dhabi’s status as one of the region’s and the world’s up-and-coming cultural hotspots.

Louvre Abu Dhabi invites guests to “see humanity in a new light”. Exhibits are curated chronologically rather than by geography, drawing parallels – not divides – between different cultures and their progression over time. It pays homage to the UAE’s welcoming nature and sits fittingly with the country’s adopted theme for 2019, Year of Tolerance. Our journey begins in The Great Vestibule, where artefacts date back to around 2,000 to 3,000 BCE from regions such as ancient Greece, Syria and Central Africa. Walking through these halls is like taking a step back in time, all the way back to The First Villages. Here, a collection of ancient art and relics can be found. One of the most significant pieces includes a carefully preserved, monumental two-headed statue from Jordan, estimated to date back to around 6,500 BCE. You’ll also find an enigmatic female figurine, entitled ‘Woman dressed in a Woolen Garment’, hailing from Central Asia and dating back to around 2,300 BCE. Thought to be a protective deity, the Bactrian Princesses stands tall and appears to watch over the museum’s exhibits. Moving on, you will journey from the evolution of war in The First Great Powers with its collections of ancient Egyptian artefacts, to the evolution of political thinking in Civilisations and Empires. Here, Greek heroes such as Socrates and Alexander the Great are honoured and the galleries chronicle humanity from all sides.

Placing the world’s many faiths peacefully together, Universal Religions houses religious texts and art from all over the world. A display of unity between various spiritual beliefs, it celebrates diversity over divide. Artefacts here include a 13th-century Quran from Syria and a dancing Lord Shiva statue from ancient India. Among the most recent acquisitions are an Avalokiteshvara Buddhist sculpture from China, dating back to the 11th or 12th century, an 18th-century Japanese Samurai armour and a jewelled 18th-century katar dagger from India inlaid with a bedazzling 481 rubies and almost one hundred emeralds. Back in the day, the weapon was worn as a symbol of wealth and power. In keeping with contemporary times, modern art lovers will not be disappointed with the museum’s collection. The penultimate gallery, Changing Modernity, houses the work of many beloved 20th-century trailblazers such as Matisse, Mondrian, Pollock and Rothko as well as local talent from the across the UAE The final gallery showcases an immersive installation by contemporary artist Susanna Fritscher. Titled Für die Luft, the piece was specifically created for the museum’s unique architecture and play of light. But the journey does not have to end once you exit the galleries. There is much to do at Louvre Abu Dhabi beyond the art itself, from soaking in the picturesque scenery from the Museum Café to kayaking through the waters surrounding the architectural marvel.  louvreabudhabi.ae

From the sea to the skies ——

Venture beyond the UAE’s stunning coast to discover the Omani peninsula of Musandam, where dramatic mountainscapes and turquoise waters provide a complete contrast to life in the emirates

Musandam, Oman

It takes a little less than three hours to drive from Dubai or Abu Dhabi to Musandam, but entering Oman’s northern peninsula can feel as though you’ve stepped into another world. As you sweep past the glitzy emirates, the skyscrapers and megamalls dominating the skyline transform into sweeping mountain ranges and pristine fjords. Against this mesmerising backdrop, Musandam stands out for its otherworldly charm. With so much ground to cover – think the dramatic Hajar Mountains and the glistening waters of the Gulf of Oman – one of the best ways to take it all in is from the skies. In fact, that first aerial glimpse of this scenic getaway destination sets the scene for an unforgettable day out. And a short 55-minute seaplane flight is all it takes, allowing you a little more time to discover the wonders of nature in this secluded Omani paradise. Seaplane tour operator and charter company Seawings operates private return flights from Dubai to Al Dana in Fujairah, followed by road transfers to Oman’s Dibba Bay in a luxury vehicle. While the thrill of taking off from the waters of the busy Dubai Creek is an exhilarating experience in itself, nothing compares to taking in views of the UAE’s striking coastline from 1,500 feet above the ground when you’re northward bound for Oman. After the scenic road trip from Fujairah to Dibba Bay, a private dhow awaits to whisk you through the sparkling waters of the Gulf of Oman. This traditional boat features three decks and is equipped with modern amenities and comforts to ensure a smooth-sailing four-hour cruise.

Flavour fiesta ——— Concierge talks ceviche and success with Mexican chef and restaurateur Richard Sandoval, the celebrity chef behind the newly-opened Latin American haunt Vakava at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi

Striking the right balance between culture and creativity is at the top of celebrity chef Richard Sandoval’s list. His humble beginnings can be traced back to Mex ico, where helping his grandmother prepare family feasts from scratch was a regular affair. Although he chose tennis as his career path during his early years – making quite a name for himself while touring the world playing professional matches – his love for food saw him make a comeback to the kitchen. And the rest is history. With a global chain of 45 world-class restaurants, Sandoval is all about bringing the food of his homeland to the world on a plate. Combining traditional ingredients with international flavours in a variety of inventive techniques to create unexpected concepts has become his speciality. His latest venture, Vakava at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, is a rising star on Abu Dhabi’s dining scene offering a vibrant taste of Latin America in a chic ambience. What inspired you to bring Latin America to the world on a plate? “My Mexican roots! The ingredients, flavour combinations and techniques used in traditional cooking in my native country make everything around food special.” What influences from your Mexican heritage translate into your culinary style and approach? “Growing up, my grandmother would serve huge culinary feasts and pretty much everything revolved around food. She would sit at the head of the table, surrounded by her loved ones, and everything was served family-style. Dishes were passed around and shared by everyone at the table. I wanted to emulate and deliver that exact experience to every guest who dines in my restaurants. Latin culture is all about bringing people together through food. Dining is an experience that is meant to be shared and savoured. Food should be comforting and bring us back to our roots.”

Vakava, Jumeirah at Etihad Towers

Is this food philosophy the secret to your success? “My mantra as a chef has always been, ‘Old ways, new hands’. And this also describes my cooking style. I combine authentic Latin ingredients, inspired by my native Mexican roots, with modern cooking techniques that I have developed over the years through my travels. Exploring new cities and cultures has allowed me to create an unexpected and exciting Latin dining experience that draws from traditional practices and gives them that modern twist to make each dish my own.”

Chicken and beef anticucho

You switched gears from professional tennis to the kitchen… tell us more about the transition. “When I started travelling around Mexico for tennis tournaments, I always found myself exploring food markets on my days off. Food was my calling, so I quit playing tennis professionally and signed up for culinary school.” Having experienced the best of both worlds, what would you say these professions have in common? “I think professionals in the world of sport and hospitality are motivated by the love of their craft. Of course, both professions require dedication and talent, but what they fundamentally have in common is passion.”

Vakava has been described as the second incarnation of your world-famous restaurant Toro Toro. What’s your take? “I like to describe Vakava as Toro Toro’s mischievous sister. It has the same Latin roots, yet a more vibrant, passionate and spirited personality. Vakava also has a more diverse taste in music and its gastronomy brings elements from other cuisines together. Vakava is diverse, colourful and fun.”

What takes the overall dining experience at Vakava beyond taste? “Everything! Today, food only represents one part of the overall dining experience. I always make sure my restaurants offer the whole package. At Vakava, every detail is carefully planned to give diners the complete experience, right from the food through to its presentation, the service, style, décor, innovative mixology and, of course, the music.”

Tell us more about the food at Vakava. Any signatures on the menu diners must try? “Vakava is a blend of flavours and ingredients from all over Latin America. Guests will also find a lot of Asian influences, techniques and ingredients on the menu because Latin American countries – Peru in particular – are also home to a large number of Asian expatriates. As signature dishes, I would definitely recommend one of our Peruvian ceviches and the Brazilian or Argentinian parrillada.”

What philosophy drives every new venue and menu? Talk us through your vision. “I want to make sure that I’m giving my guests a delicious meal and the best experience possible at a beautiful restaurant. We are a chef-driven company and that is why we always need to stay creative in the kitchen.”

Grilled cauliflower

With a global network of dining venues, how do you balance consistency and diversity? “It almost becomes like a game of chess, moving people around your business. I’ve opened two or three restaurants in the last month, but I was able to do so only because I have a great team of people. Of course, I look at the menu, taste everything and make adjustments. But it’s not just about my role in the process. It’s all about the people who make the venue a success. That’s why, finding the right team with the same passion is critical.” In your opinion, what is more important when it comes to cooking: creativity or tradition? “Both! But if I had to pick, it would be tradition, which, to me, correlates to the taste. Taste is what people remember for years after a meal and that’s a memory I want to give all my guests when they visit my restaurants.” You have three restaurants in Dubai and one in Abu Dhabi. What do you think draws chefs from all over the world to make a name for themselves on the UAE’s dining scene? “I believe that the UAE is cementing itself as a culinary hub. What inspired me to establish my presence here is the incredible vision that the leaders have for the country. They turn sand into diamonds, and as a chef, I always want to be in places where there is a strong vision for the future, growth potential and a very knowledgeable clientele.” Does tennis still keep you busy when you’re not behind the kitchen counter? “Absolutely, tennis and golf are my two favourite hobbies.” If you had to describe the dining experience at Vakava in one word, what would it be? “Explosive!”

Fabulously French ——

Dining at Pierre’s Bistro & Bar is no ordinary experience. Brought to life by award-winning chef Pierre Gagnaire, the venue champions French cuisine created using simple ingredients with bold flavour combinations

8/25/19 7:00 PM

For decades, French cuisine has been equated with gastronomic prestige. Freshly baked bread, a sumptuous selection of cheese and an endless list of delicate pastries are among the many standout items on a traditional menu. Simplicity and freshness have always been the culinary focus in France and magical flavours are born out of creative combinations that rely on the use of butter and herbs as a base for almost every sauce. While it might seem effortless on the surface, French cuisine demands a certain passion and dexterity in the kitchen. Executed perfectly, epicurean excellence is guaranteed. One such venue that ticks all the boxes when it comes to authentic French dining is Pierre’s Bistro & Bar. And with three-time Michelin award-winning chef Pierre Gagnaire at the helm, there’s no surprises why. With a host of top-class restaurants around the globe and a career that spans more than 40 years, Gagnaire is a respected master chef. Made famous for his pioneering culinary style, his success is attributed to his ability to create an extraordinary interplay between ingredients. He has brought this unique technique to Pierre’s Bistro & Bar – considered one of Dubai’s finest restaurants since opening at InterContinental Dubai Festival City over a year ago. From the chef...

“When it comes to French cooking, the secret lies in the sauce. It’s what gives you a final product you can be proud of. In France, we are lucky because we have it all – the sea, the mountains, the countryside – and the inspiration comes from everywhere. At our Dubai venue, it is all about casual food with a strong French character and that Dubai touch, simply because we cater to a multicultural audience.” - Pierre Gagnaire

Pierre’s Bistro & Bar

Pierre’s Bistro & Bar

We recently had the chance to check out the venue and also meet the celebrated chef himself, who was in town to launch the restaurant’s new menu for the season. And while a few signatures have remained a constant on the extensive list, the chef expressed that it’s that Dubai touch that sets the venue apart from its global outposts. And this was made clear when our starters for the evening arrived. The generous portions require you to visit with a serious appetite because the staff will ensure you do not leave without trying the most popular items on the menu. And so after a helping of freshly baked bread and a bowl of crispy baked parmesan, the honey and pine nut lamb skewer, highly recommended by our server, was the first dish on our table. Served on a bed of green curry hummus, it’s a favourite among local visitors, thanks to the tender lamb meat spiced ever so slightly to complement the creamy hummus. The pan-fried squid was another wonderful suggestion. Also popular among frequent diners, the fresh calamari is prepared in a black garlic butter sauce and drizzled with kale, mushrooms and coriander.

With an extensive list of mains catering to vegetarians, pescetarians and carnivores, you’ll find yourself spoilt for choice. While we were tempted to try a little bit of everything, the portion sizes simply won’t let you. And then again, there’s always the next time – chef Gagnaire’s creations will keep you coming back for more. We decided to sample the organic roasted farm chicken breast. Tender and flavourful in every bite, the chicken is cooked with aromatic herbs and served with mushroom cream, green pepper and potatoes. Given our fondness for truffles, we also ordered the black truffle spaghetti, simply cooked in a delicate sauce to allow the flavour of the truffles to shine through. By this point in your meal, your appetite is sure to be well and truly satiated. Yet, one look at the dessert menu is all it will take to tempt you to order one more course. We chose the chocolate souffled biscuit pistachio parfait served with a bitter chocolate ganache, ideal for sharing. The perfect end to a wonderful meal, as we savoured every bite, it also gave us the chance to truly appreciate the brilliant setting. The open space is accentuated with giant tropical plants, pink flamingos and brass turtles that add a touch of playfulness to the refined, brightly-lit interior. And during the cooler months, the outdoor terrace lends itself to memorable dining experiences, complete with views over the Festival Bay and the emirate’s skyline. When you dine at Pierre’s Bistro & Bar, you take more than a fond memory home with you. Every diner leaves the restaurant with a freshly baked baguette that makes for a great accompaniment to your next meal at home. All in all, the venue and the food certainly live up to the legacy of its renowned chef. For more information or reservations  04 7011199 or  pierresdubai.com

Temple run ——

Two nights in the Thai capital are truly never enough and although we made the most of our time in Bangkok, it’s left us with a fierce urgency to return Words by Melanie Swan

Bangkok, the Thai capital, is a tumultuous mix of old and new, a blend of ancient spirituality sat seamlessly alongside cutting edge modern design. Visually, its bamboo and teak riverside houses contrast with the shiny skyscrapers around, but all somehow fits together amongst the array of greenery from the ground up. Even on balconies and roof gardens, residents are surrounded by green, which is what makes Bangkok retain its sense of lush Thailand in spite of its urbanisation. Its roads are busy and you can never bank on getting anywhere fast, but there is an abundance of things to do from culture to shopping, in the city known as the Venice of the East. Just six hours away from the UAE, it is a destination which could be enjoyed as a long weekend away, but that would be a shame. There is so much to do and see that it needs longer than we anticipated, as we arrived booked in for just two nights. On our first night, we ventured to the Ratchada Train Market, a lively collection of around 2,000 stalls, from clothing to street food. It’s not a peaceful place, there is chaos all around, but it’s alive, with an array of bars and DJs booming between the crowds. From bugs to crocodile, pad Thai to seafood, there is every Asian food imaginable (and unimaginable) on offer at this huge market. Not for the faint-hearted, it is, if nothing else, authentic – a place to go with an open mind, a big appetite and cash. Next door, shoppers can find the Esplanade Mall with more mainstream shops and a food court, but for something a little more quirky, ArtBox is also nearby. It is one of the newer street markets in the city which has been moving locations since it was launched. Based on the BoxPark concept begun in London’s Shoreditch, pop-up shops are in giant metal shipping containers offering everything from

fashion to art. Though still inexpensive, quality here is better, with more focus on local artists and designers than the usual array of tourist paraphernalia. Worthy of an evening of its own, the garden areas, live music and copious amounts of food on offer, have made it one of the most popular new markets in town. We stayed at 137 Pillars Suites & Residences, located a kilometre away from Phrom Phong BTS Skytrain Station and the endless shopping options at Em District. Just half an hour from the airport, this hotel has literally every base covered. Every one of the 34 suites has a free local phone for guests to allow you to hotspot to your own phone, use GPS and internet services or even chat to your personal butler to ask them to arrange a Grab – Thailand’s version of Uber – to come and pick you up. Wat Arun stands majestically on the banks of the Chao Phraya River Famous for its temples, Bangkok’s Wat Arun has to be my favourite. We arrived at 8am, just before the doors opened, to try and beat the floods of crowds coming to awe at the statuesque tower. Very unlike the traditional style of Thai temples, it stands majestically on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. Close to Wat Pho and Chinatown, it is easy to hop on a riverboat to see other sites around the city. There was still so much left to do when we left that I will definitely want to return. The people are warm, it’s affordable at every level and its climate is welcoming all year round.

Chasing paradise in Phuket ——

The biggest of the Thai islands, Phuket is truly a destination for every kind of traveller Words by Melanie Swan

Whether you want to lay on the beach and bask in the sun while sipping fruity concoctions all day, get fit, or get out in the ocean to explore the array of stunning islands surrounding you, Phuket has so much to give. This year I took my second trip to the island, though it is my fifth to Thailand. Something about its charm, its people and the dramatic scenery brings me back. Whether travelling on a budget or looking for something more luxurious, there is accommodation of all kinds in Phuket, making it a truly accessible destination. I began my stay on the hillside resort of Wyndham Grand, Kalim Bay. It is from these towering heights that you can truly absorb the breathtaking scenery Thailand has to offer with its rolling jungle-covered hills and powerful coastline. Most of its rooms have private pools, which add a sense of decadence to the experience, but the vistas from its beach view villas are truly magical. After two wonderful nights there, we moved nearby to what is possibly the most stunning resort I have found to date – Twinpalms Phuket on the west coast. Tucked away behind Surin Beach, which retains its charm with its raw, rugged coastline, the resort is a haven. Part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World group, there are only 97 penthouses, suites and rooms, all built around the winding lagoons. We were upgraded to the magnificent penthouse, complete with a rooftop private pool on the third floor and two levels of utter luxury.

If shopping is your thing, head to Boat Street for the Talad Yai morning market. Not only is there a wide range of stalls with the likes of clothing and local handicrafts, but an array of cute local boutiques to keep you occupied. This is the place to experience local cuisine with street food at its finest. From pad Thai to pork ribs, coconut sticky rice to much more, it is a gastronome’s dream. This is also the place to go with plenty of cash, an appetite for endless bargains and an empty stomach. In addition to the shopping, live entertainment brings the whole place to life, with live music and performances, such as fire jugglers and acrobats, going on into the night. For a more luxurious gastronomic experience, a new Saturday brunch has launched at Shimmer restaurant on Kamala Beach. It has quickly become a hot favourite on the island, and booking is a must. The brunch is known for its mouthwatering array of seafood, guilt-inducing desserts and much more. Catch Beach Club has long been famous, since opening nearly 15 years ago, known for its chilled days and slightly wild nights. But now, it has opened the island’s first family-friendly beach club. Located next to the original beach club on Bang Tao beach, at Catch Junior there is plenty for the little ones to do, including DJ lessons for the kids from Catch’s in-house team. There is even a special weekend brunch for the whole family to enjoy.

We spent a very chilled day there and came back for dinner where the atmosphere was electric, with a live DJ and a great crowd. A trip to the majestic Thai islands, made famous from movies such as James Bond and The Beach, would not be complete without some kind of boat trip to explore first hand. Thai long-tail boats are one way to do that and can be hired quite affordably, but we hopped aboard the luxurious MY Olympia Yacht with Andaman Cruises.

The sunset cruise took us from Ao Por to the beautiful little remote beach of Khai Island and we were literally the only ones there. The boat moors to allow guests to swim and enjoy the peaceful surrounds, before heading back, when we were dazzled by the incredible sunset – something Thailand never fails to deliver. The trip was complete with free-flowing drinks and snacks. While our hotels had great fitness facilities, we also enjoyed trying out the local Muay Thai gyms as not only did they offer a great two-hour workout, but it was the perfect way to interact with locals and get a real taste of a part of the local culture. It’s also well worth a trip to one of the island’s three stadiums to witness a

A short hike up to the Big Buddha is worth waking up early to catch the sunrise fight night, where you can really see the power and dedication that goes into the ancient martial art. A short hike up to the Big Buddha (or you can go by tuk-tuk) is worth waking up early to catch the sunrise. As with many attractions, it’s best seen before the crowds come. Sat atop a huge hill range, this is a true spectacle not to miss, with the sounds of the monks chanting just floating across the skies. The beautiful Bang Pae Waterfall at the Khao Phra Thaeo National Park and the gibbon rescue centre are a must-see for nature lovers. Though small, the waterfall is beautiful so take your bathers and a towel. Thailand is one of many countries with a pretty poor track record of animal welfare, but one place worth supporting is the Phuket Elephant Sanctuary, one of only two genuine rescue centres. There will be no bathing the elephants or riding them, but there is an opportunity to feed them. Many have been tortured and are now at the rescue centre to live out their lives in peace, but set in the midst of the jungle, it is no less impressive to get up so close to these magnificent creatures. Gaia

Kayaking

Dubai provides peace of mind and a high standard of living that allows you to stop sweating the small stuff and focus your time and effort on achieving the impossible. This is incredibly liberating and empowering. The accessibility, diversity and energy this city buzzes with cannot be easily duplicated and there is no other place like this in the world. The city changes every five kilometres. As CEO for Kalebr Americas, I split my time between Toronto and Dubai, and each city has its own charm. But when it comes to making the most of my leisure time, Dubai offers plenty to do. I love attending food and social events. When I’m not working, I am most likely to be on a culinary adventure in the city or at a sporting event. Beach days at La Mer, bonding with family and friends over food, and hikes with my puppy are some of my favourite things to do. One of my hobbies also includes food journaling, where you will find secret ratings for milkshakes all over town. Gaia is one of my favourite restaurants in Dubai. It is a Greek and Mediterranean-inspired venue in DIFC and there is something spectacular about the way they cook their food. The atmosphere and culinary experience take me back home to summers in Toronto’s Greektown. Simply magical! For those looking to go out and about exploring the emirate, Dubai is an architectural marvel. I cannot think of any other city in the world that boasts such contrasting architecture with everything from quaint historic structures to skyscrapers that touch the clouds. Some of the best places to soak up this contrast are Madinat Jumeirah, La Mer, City Walk, Downtown Dubai and Umm Suqeim. I also love that every emirate complements the other. From the Friday Market in Fujairah, kayaking through the mangroves in Abu Dhabi to hiking near Hatta Dam, there is something for everyone. Exploring the wonders each of the seven emirates has to offer is definitely time well spent. It also helps that Dubai is in the centre of the world. I like to check out of work and check in to a beachside or mountainside hotel in Muscat, Uttarakhand, Bali or Sri Lanka. I always come back recharged, full of fresh ideas and eager to get back to work. Follow him on Twitter @aadityatangri
