The mosque's main prayer hall (pictured) has the largest chandelier in the world, which is 10 metres in diameter and 15 metres in height. The chandelier, one of seven at the mosque, features Swarovski crystals from Austria and glasswork from Italy.

The Qibla wall features the 99 names, or qualities, of Allah and is a fine example of traditional Kufi calligraphy.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque can accommodate almost 41,000 worshippers, including 7,126 in the main prayer hall, where Muslims pray on the world's largest handmade carpet.

Ramadan Ramadan is a deeply spiritual period, but also a time of celebration as families use the occasion to visit loved ones.

Expected to begin on August 1st, the most noticeable element for visitors is fasting during daylight hours. Experience Ramadan in Abu Dhabi by breaking the day’s fast at any number of iftars throughout the emirate. Iftar, which is the meal that breaks the fast at sunset, is a social time when Muslims meet with family and friends. Visitors don’t need to be Muslim to attend iftar. protected past Al Ain was recently registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its important archaeological sites, historical buildings and natural areas.

It is the first site in the UAE to make the prestigious list and now features alongside famous landmarks such as the Great Wall of China, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and the Taj Mahal in India.

Among the sites listed for their geological, archaeological and historical importance are the Jebel Hafeet and Hili cultural landscapes, Bidaa Bint Saud, the oases areas and the falaj water transport system. The Hafeet tombs (pictured) date back to the Bronze Age and contain more than 500 graves.

Al Ain is one of the more traditional cities in the UAE, where old social customs and traditions – such as wedding celebrations, Bedouin hospitality, falconry, camel races and handicrafts – are still practised in much the same manner as previous generations. And despite the modern shopping malls with brands from around the world, souks still provide an important retail service.

Observing Ramadan Ramadan is a rewarding, spiritual time in which Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset and practise great self control.

With the holy month spanning much of August this year, what better time to explore its fascinating intricacies?

Ramadan is the ninth and holiest

month in the Islamic calendar, the month in which Muslims believe that

Allah chose to reveal the Qur’an to the Prophet Muhammad. For Muslims, Ramadan, which this year is expected to start on August 1st with the sighting of the new moon, is a deeply spiritual time of year that marks a personal journey in which they seek to become closer to God. Muslims increase faith during Ramadan through the act of fasting, abstaining from eating and drinking between sunrise and sunset. They also recite the Muslim profession of faith, perform ritual prayers five times a day and donate time, food and money to charitable causes.

With the aim of pleasing the Almighty by helping others, controlling emotions such as anger, lust and envy, and refraining from gossip and physical intimacy, they cleanse their soul.

RAMADAN RITUALS To those unfamiliar with Islam, Ramadan has its own distinctive ambience and while daily life continues, there are subtle differences that every visitor will experience.

Working hours are curtailed and shops may close for prayer times, so be aware of the slower pace of life and adjusted hours of operation. Also, to be respectful to those observing the rituals of the season, nonMuslims are expected to refrain from eating, drinking or smoking in public during the day, and to dress modestly.

Ramadan is a social season and everyone, not just followers of Islam, can get involved in Ramadan-related activities. Friends and families gather each evening to enjoy iftar (the meal over which the fast is broken) and celebrate their blessings.

Visitors to Abu Dhabi are encouraged to experience an iftar buffet and sample the full range of Middle Eastern cuisine.

Seyam, fasting during Ramadan, is one of the five pillars of Islam together with shahadah, sincerely reciting the Muslim profession of faith; salat, performing ritual prayers five times a day; and hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca. Zakat, giving alms (or charity) to the poor and needy, is another.

Visit any of the city’s shopping malls throughout the holy month and it’s likely you will see charity stands dotted around the main thoroughfares.

Ramadan is a time of giving and Muslims donate money, clothes and food to charities.

Visitors who would like to participate in the spirit of Ramadan might like to give larger tips than usual to their waiter or taxi driver.

LEARNING ABOUT ISLAM The end of Ramadan is marked by a three-day holiday called Eid Al Fitr (expected to fall on August 31st), which begins with the sighting of the new moon. The first day of Eid is spent with family, although traditionally the senior member of the household will pay courtesy visits to prominent elders or local sheikhs to wish them Eid Mubarak (a blessed Eid).

For those with a limited knowledge of Islam, a guided tour around Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is an excellent way to find out more about the faith. The largest mosque in the UAE and a must-see on any trip to the capital, the building is breathtaking both from the inside and outside.

More than 3,000 workers helped to construct the mosque using natural materials such as marble, stone, gold, semi-precious stones, crystals and ceramics. The maximum capacity is approximately 41,000 and the overall structure is 22,412 square metres.

Respecting Ramadan • Refrain from eating, drinking or smoking in public during the day in Ramadan, even inside cars • It is considered polite to cover shoulders and legs • The only live music played during Ramadan is traditional Arabic music. Dancing is not allowed • Most businesses and government offices will close between 2 and 4pm • Iftar, the meal over which the daily fast is broken, is held around 6.30 to 7pm depending on the time of year and when the sun sets • Supermarkets and shops may be closed during the day, but will usually have extended hours at night – sometimes until midnight

As one of the most visited buildings in the UAE, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is not only a place of worship and Friday gathering, but a place of learning and discovery through its education and visitor programs. Its ‘doors’ are open to everyone.

Throughout Ramadan, guided tours take place at 10 and 11am each day to encourage cultural understanding. The complimentary tours, which last approximately 45, are led by Emirati guides who will show you around the mosque interpreting the architecture, artistic elements and Islamic culture.

Visitors are advised to arrive approximately 15 minutes before the tour time and meet one of the visitor experience co-ordinators. General visiting hours are 9am to noon, daily.

Ramadan NIGHTS Whether you’re breaking the day’s fast or sampling a slice of local culture, iftar is the ideal way to enjoy an August evening

Those looking to experience a slice of local culture and taste traditional Middle Eastern cuisine are in for a treat this month.

With Ramadan falling in August, lavish iftar buffets are being served in hotels and other venues across the emirate.

A deeply spiritual time, Muslims seek to become closer to God by following a set of religious and spiritual observations. The most noticeable of these for visitors is fasting during daylight hours.

Muslims refrain from eating, drinking and smoking between sunrise and sunset, but when the time comes to break their fast, it is a social occasion and everyone is invited.

Traditionally the fast is broken with a date and some milk before enjoying harira (Moroccan

soup) con-taining lentils, coriander, tomatoes and dried figs. Soup is a key dish at iftar as it is easy to digest and gives almost instant relief from the fast.

Soup is often followed by hot and cold mezzeh, with dishes such as fattoush (salad with fried pita bread), hommous, sambusek (pastry stuffed with cheese or meat) and kibbeh (ground meat and bulgar wheat).

The centrepiece of most iftar buffets is ouzi, a large dish consisting of lamb that is covered with liquid and cooked on a bed of rice.

The array of desserts is also vast with Arabic treats such as baklava (a sweet pastry with chopped nuts and syrup or honey) and regional favourite umm ali (an Arabic version of the British bread and butter pudding).

Emirates Palace One of Abu Dhabi’s most popular iftars is held at Emirates Palace.

In a large, air-conditioned Ramadan tent in the grounds of the luxurious hotel, the city’s Muslims break the day’s fast with delicious Emirati and international cuisine. They are joined by guests of other faiths who are eager to experience a slice of local tradition.

The elaborate pavilion set-up, located along the beach side of the hotel, incorporates a traditional design to enhance the spirit of Ramadan.

This is an ideal time to sample authentic Emirati meals as well. In the extensive buffet, guests will find local dishes such as thareed and machboos, mixed in with typical Ramadan dishes such as lamb ouzi and harees.

The buffet is complemented by an extensive dessert selection of local, regional and international delights as well as typical Ramadan juices.

Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi Essence, the newest restaurant at the Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi, will be showcased this month with iftar being served nightly from August 9th.

A wide selection of dishes from around the world will feature in the buffet, however the focus will be primarily on classic Arabic dishes. Visit the live cooking stations for saj (flatbread), falafel, shawarma and favourites such as kibbeh and fatayer (pastry with spinach or cheese).

When it comes to mains, visitors will be well fed with dishes such as Lebanese mixed grill, ouzi, laban ammu (lamb cooked in yoghurt) and

dawood bash (spiced meatballs in tomato and pine nut gravy).

In addition to dates grown in Liwa in Abu Dhabi’s Al Gharbia (Western Region), Emirati dishes such as machboos (lamb cooked with basmati rice and local spices), harees (boiled, cracked or coarsely ground wheat with chicken or lamb that is typically served first) and thareed (similar to stew with either chicken or lamb) will be offered.

A full complement of Ramadan juices will be served as well as fresh and canned drinks.

Grand Millennium Al Wahda Abu Dhabi’s biggest hotel will host two iftar buffets each night – one in Al Wahda all-day dining restaurant and the other in the Alhan Ramadan tent in the courtyard.

The traditional affair will include a combination of cold mezzeh and a variety of main courses from the traditional Arabic cuisines of Lebanon, Syria and the wider Middle East. The chefs also promise a fusion of international cuisine to cater to all tastes.

OUDH Wander through the malls and modern souks in Abu Dhabi and chances are you will smell the distinct aroma of oudh. A resin found in agarwood, oudh is often burned with the tree’s bark, creating an aromatic smoke that wafts through the air.

Its most basic form, however, is a strong-smelling oil that is sold in beautiful and delicate bottles and dabbed on the skin like perfume.

Arabic perfumeries are plentiful in the city’s malls and shopping areas and while they all stock ready-made blends, some can also tailor a perfume to suit. Then it’s simply a matter of choosing your favourite bottle.

The strong-smelling substance may not be to all tastes, but it serves as a nostalgic reminder of a visit to the UAE, one which will linger for a long time.

SWEETS Never has the saying ‘sweets for my sweet’ been more appropriate than in the UAE where a huge percentage of the population has a wicked sweet tooth. A wander through the city’s malls will uncover sweet shop, after chocolate shop, after cupcake shop.

The ‘original’ sweet however is the date, which is grown in abundance

in the UAE’s oases. Packed full of energy and highly nutritious, dates are a popular gift during Ramadan as they are one of the most common foods used to break the day’s fast.

There are many shops selling a variety of dates, including the decadent chocolate-coated treat, but one of the best is Bateel, which can be found in malls and modern souks throughout the city.

If dates are not to your liking, why not take home a box of Arabic sweets such as baklava and nougat. Syrupy sweet with typical local flavours of pistachio and rose, the treats are sure to be a hit with family and friends.

Chocoholics aren’t forgotten either and the UAE is home to the first producer of camel milk chocolate. Said to be low in lactose and more nutritious than cow’s milk, Al Nassma camel milk chocolate could prove to be a healthier alternative. The chocolate comes in standard bars of varying sizes as well as cute camel shapes and a boxed ‘camel caravan’.

In fact, with its tax-free shopping, buying gold and gold jewellery here may be cheaper and easier than you think.

For a more ‘local’ shopping experience however, visit the Madinat Zayed Gold Centre where you can haggle with the vendors once you find your desired treasure. There is an enormous array of styles, sizes and shapes to suit all budgets and if you can’t find what you want, why not ask to have it made?

Alternatively, purchase a souvenir gold bar from the world’s first gold vending machine at Emirates Palace.

ART Whether it’s for investment purposes or to decorate a home, a piece of art can serve as a useful and beautiful postcard from Abu Dhabi.

There are numerous galleries throughout the city displaying and selling works by established Emirati artists as well as pieces by up-andcoming young stars. While choosing an art piece is a deeply personal task, the staff at the gallery will be able to offer information on the artist, their background and their work.

Another unique and popular treasure to take home is Arabic calligraphy, whether it be verses of the Qur’an on canvas or in the form of jewellery.

Names written in Arabic and worn as pendants have become popular souvenirs of a visit to the UAE.

SHISHA Smoking shisha, or flavoured tobacco through a water pipe, is a popular pastime in the UAE. Enjoyed by men and women in groups and couples, shisha has been a tradition in the Middle East for centuries.

The tobacco is available in a wide variety of flavours such as double apple, grape or mint, or more obscure options such as cola and chocolate.

The water pipes come in various sizes and colours, and can be bought in souvenir and traditional gift shops throughout the city. Less expensive versions are also stocked in many supermarkets.

Choose a design you like in your favourite colour and select a few flavours of tobacco, but be sure to pack the pipe with lots of padding for the journey home. 

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Ramadan is the ideal time to learn more about Islam and the role it plays in Abu Dhabi society, and one of the best places to do this is at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

The breathtaking mosque sits on the edge of Abu Dhabi island and is one of the few in the UAE open to non-Muslims.

Special 45-minute tours are held at 10 and 11am during Ramadan so visitors can learn more about the Holy Month and what it means to Muslims.

Specially trained local guides discuss Islam and its practices, answering any questions visitors may have. They also discuss the structural intricacies of the mosque, such as its architectural styles and record-breaking achievements.

All visitors are asked to wear respectful clothing, which includes trousers for men, and women will be given an abaya and sheila to wear.

There is no need to book ahead for groups of less than 10 people, however visitors are asked to arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of the tour.

Ferrari World If the thought of riding the world’s fastest rollercoaster has you trembling with excitement, then Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is the place for you.

Opened in November 2010, the attraction is the only Ferrari theme park in the world and is brimming with high-octane rides and attractions to suit both thrill-seekers and those looking for less scare.

The world’s largest indoor theme park, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi has been built under a distinctive red roof designed in the style of a classic double-curve body shell of a Ferrari GT. Among its 20 rides and attractions is the world’s fastest rollercoaster, Formula Rossa, which accelerates to 240kmh and emulates the feeling of being in a Ferrari F1 car with coasters designed to resemble the iconic red vehicle.

The win also put him in the history books as the youngest driver to claim the championship title.

Yas Links For a more relaxed luxury sporting activity Yas Island presents the first links course in the Middle East. YAS MARINA One of Yas Island’s defining features is Yas Marina, a 142-berth facility capable of accommodating vessels ranging from 15 to 66 metres, with guest berthing for up to 120 metres.

It is one of the most prestigious positions from which to watch the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and berths fill up quickly for this event each November.

Eastern delights No visit to Abu Dhabi would be complete without sampling some of the region’s finest Arabic cuisine

Mealtimes are entwined in Arabic culture.

The focus is on social and family gatherings, where the atmosphere is festive and the food is diverse, exotic and plentiful.

At the start of what is generally a comprehensive menu, you will find an array of tempting hot and cold appetizers, or mezzeh, which are sure to whet the appetite for more. Try popular Arabic salads like tabbouleh and fattoush with chopped mint and fragrant seasoning, served with spicy pickles.

Dotted around the table there will be plenty of fresh puffy portions of Arabic bread, so don’t be afraid to tear off a piece and scoop into the selection of delicious dips. Enjoy hommous and other traditional dips such as moutabel and baba ganoush, both made from aubergines.

In addition to a variety of lentil soups, discover finger foods including spinach and cheese fatayer, falafel and kibbeh.

As menus consist of many dishes don’t over indulge as there is always more fabulous food to come.

From creamy chicken with almonds and cracked wheat to exotically flavoured vegetables, Arabic cuisine covers it all. Favoured for generations is the mixed grill, with a traditional focus on lamb dishes such as shish taouk, lamb kofta and lamb chops. Also popular among locals is hammour fish, which is seasoned and grilled to perfection, although unfortunately not on as many menus now due to overfishing.

Make sure you save space for dessert as you will be spoilt for choice. Top of the list is the authentic Arabic dessert, umm ali, which is a rich bread pudding made with puff pastry and chopped nuts. There is also an assortment of Arabic sweets including baklava, scrumptious honey-drizzled nut-filled pastries and a range of juicy dates to satisfy any sweet tooth.

Round off the meal with some locally grown dates and a cup of steaming hot Arabic coffee, offering a distinctive taste of cardamom and saffron.

Discover Proud of its culture and history, Abu Dhabi has focused efforts on preserving its identity through galleries and museums

The capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi is also the largest and wealthiest emirate of the seven that form the country.

Before the discovery of oil in 1958, Abu Dhabi relied heavily on pearl diving, fishing and date cultivation. In recent years, however, oil wealth has been used to transform the city into a modern, rapidly expanding metropolis that makes headlines around the world, sparking interest from travellers and investors near and far.

Despite this rapid transformation, history, heritage and culture are still very important to Abu Dhabi and there are many ways in which visitors can experience this for themselves.

The Heritage Village, for example, is a re-creation of Bedouin life and has displays, a small museum and souk.

Al Ain, the ‘garden city’, is the heritage hub of the emirate with its historical forts, date plantations and multiple museums.

Al Ain sits at the base of Jebel Hafeet, one of the emirate’s highest peaks, and has almost 20 sites listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Abu Dhabi city is also pushing a cultural agenda of its own. Saadiyat Island’s Cultural District will soon be home to the Louvre and Guggenheim museums in addition to a maritime museum, national museum and performing arts centre.

Capital of culture Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island will soon be home to the world-famous Louvre and Guggenheim museums.

The Abu Dhabi government is spending over US$1 billion to bring these cultural landmarks to the emirate.

They have also signed some of the world’s most renowned architects, including Frank Gehry who shot to fame with his design of the Guggenheim Bilbao in Spain, and Jean Nouvel, who designed the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. In addition, the Zayed National Museum will be designed by Lord Norman Foster, making the Cultural District the only place in the world to have buildings designed by five Pritzker Prize winners.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi is set to open in 2013, while the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open in 2014.

Sheikh Zayed GRAND Mosque One of Abu Dhabi’s most recognisable landmarks, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the only one in the emirate that is open to non-muslims and a must on any visitor’s itinerary.

Al Ain National Museum The oldest museum in the UAE, Al Ain National Museum has displays dating from the Stone Age to the country’s pre-oil era with photography exhibits as well as jewellery, tools, pottery and other artefacts. There is a separate exhibit demonstrating the falaj water system. Make time to visit the nearby Sultan Fort.

Heritage Village A must-see destination for traditional Emirati handicrafts, the Heritage Village features reconstructions of Bedouin tents, old fishing villages and traditional markets. Located opposite the Abu Dhabi Corniche on the Breakwater near Marina Mall, there are shops that sell local crafts and other souvenirs.

Cultural Foundation Located in the grounds of the Old Fort, the Cultural Foundation houses the National Library, National Archives and the Institute of Culture and Art. It hosts year-round exhibitions of painting, sculpture, photography, pottery and Arabic calligraphy.

Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum Built in 1937, the palace of the late Sheikh Zayed was converted to a museum and opened to the public in 2001. Visitors won’t find a large collection of photographs or exhibits because Sheikh Zayed wanted the royal palace and residence to be a true reflection of his country’s culture prior to the discovery of oil.

The Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship is one of the most prestigious international sports events in the capital. It is the first of three European PGA Tour events held in the Gulf in the space of three weeks – the others being the Qatar Masters and Dubai Desert Classic.

From January 21st to 23rd, Abu Dhabi Golf Club hosted the world's top golfers, including reigning champion Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood and Paul Casey, who battled for a share of the AED9.9 million (US$2.7 million) prize purse and the coveted Falcon Trophy. Kaymer won the championship for the third time in four years.

A new addition to Abu Dhabi’s golfing scene, the Kyle Phillips-designed Yas Links staged The Invitational charity golf tournament on January 17th. South Africa's Retief Goosen won the event ahead of Frenchman Thomas Levet and Sweden's Henrick Stenson.

Also in January, golfing legend Gary Player hosted the Saadiyat Beach Classic, a charity event that raised almost AED2 million and attracted some of the world's finest golfers. .

DRINKING IN ABU DHABI

Local licensing laws mean that most outlets serving alcohol are limited to the city’s four- and five-star hotels, sports clubs and some governmentowned establishments.

There is a zero-tolerance policy on drink driving and anyone involved in a collision found with alcohol in their blood will usually receive a month's jail sentence and a fine.

Drinking in public is also illegal and punishable with a hefty fine, and sometimes imprisonment.

Alcohol is not sold on religious holidays, nor during daylight hours in the holy month of Ramadan, even to non-Muslims.

The legal drinking age in the UAE is 21.

Young people should carry identification when visiting a bar as they may not be let in.

Smoking shisha (hubbly bubbly) is very popular in Abu Dhabi. The Middle Eastern water pipe, which is thought to have originated around 500 years ago, purifies and cools the smoke from flavoured tobacco heated on top of the pipe by coals.
