Many guests want to learn about the tradition and culture of Abu Dhabi. I recommend a guided tour of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque so they can learn about Islam and the Muslim culture. Another place to learn more about Abu Dhabi’s history and culture is Heritage Village, where there is a small re-creation of a Bedouin village, a souk and a museum. Yas Island, just 15 minutes from Abu Dhabi Corniche, is a beautiful place to visit. It has regular car racing at Yas Marina Circuit and will stage the Abu Dhabi Formula One Grand Prix in November. There is also Yas Links golf club which is one of the biggest in Abu Dhabi. Away from the coast, Al Ain is a good place to visit. The Al Ain Wildlife Park & Resort is a popular attraction as is the Al Ain National Museum. Many people enjoy the trip to Al Ain for the greenery. Abu Dhabi has a variety of shopping experiences. Those looking for traditional clothes should visit the Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre. Next door is the gold souk which is good for buying jewellery. Marina Mall and Abu Dhabi Mall are the biggest in the city. They are good for electronics and make a nice day out. When it comes to dining, we have a French restaurant in our hotel called Le Beaujolais which is popular with people from the GCC region and Restaurant China is always busy. Many guests also ask where they can try traditional Arabic food. I recommend Lebanese Flower, which is outside of the hotel.

Commonly seen at Emirati celebrations and cultural events, the yola is a traditional dance performed by men. Forming two facing groups, one line spins and throws canes or replica rifles while the other chants poetry. Such is the popularity of this cultural dance that competitions are often staged by local television networks and broadcast across the country.

history under the spotlight With 17 sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List, Al Ain is the ideal place to learn more about the emirate’s past
Q Words by Amanda Tomlinson
Abu Dhabi emirate is a land of contrasts. Its capital city is the nerve centre with ultra-modern buildings, embassies, spacious malls and opulent five-star hotels. Al Gharbia (Western Region) is a nature lover’s paradise with towering red sand dunes, camel festivals, desert islands and date farms. Al Ain, in the Eastern Region, is the cultural heart, a place where tradition features prominently in everyday life, the home of the country’s forefathers and a place where visitors will find 17 UNESCO World Heritage Listed sites. The sites were added to the prestigious international list last year in a first for the UAE. The cultural sites are of geological, archaeological and historical importance and include the stunning Jebel Hafeet mountain, bronze and iron age sites of Al Hili, tombs of the Bida Bin Saud area and the oases with their falaj irrigation system. Inclusion on the list puts Al Ain alongside well-known international sites such as the Great Wall of China, Egypt’s Pyramids of Giza and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

Heritage Heartland
2
Al Ain is a well-preserved city with an abundance of forts and oases. It has been given the title ‘the garden city’ because of its multitude of green areas, but it is also the cultural and heritage heartland of the emirate. Its history dates back several thousand years and archaeological investigations have revealed that the area has been continuously inhabited since the late Stone Age period. Archaeological sites and artefacts have been found dating back to the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age and Hellenistic pre-Islamic and Islamic eras, while there is also evidence the city traded with major cultures in the north (Mesopotamia and Persia) and the east (India and Pakistan). Why not take a trip back in time and visit these historical sites?

Falaj
This area contains over 500 graves, with Bronze Age cairn tombs. It dates to a period between 3200 and 2700 BC, also known as the Hafeet Period or the Hafeet Cultural Horizon. The tombs and their contents revealed Al Ain’s role at the crossroads of Mesopotamian trade.
During the Iron Age, the inhabitants of Al Ain began using the falaj, a system that enabled water to be transported from the mountains to the plains. It led to the construction of permanent settlement sites along with agriculture. The oldest falaj, which dates back to 1000 BC, is located at the Hili Archaeological Park. To see more examples of falaj, visit Al Ain Oasis.

Forts

Visitors will see numerous forts in Al Ain, which along with many other historic buildings such as towers, mosques and private palaces and residences, are reminiscent of the pre-1960 period before oil was discovered. The beautiful Al Jahili Fort, which is the birthplace of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s first president, was built in 1891 to defend the city and protect palm groves. It now houses a permanent exhibition of work by British adventurer Wilfred Thesiger, who crossed the Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter) in the 1940s. The Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage also holds the annual Al Ain Classics music festival in the grounds of the fort.

Al Ain Palace Museum was once the home of the late Sheikh Zayed and the hub of the city’s political life. Visitors will find a collection of portraits of the royal family, a family tree showing the sheikh’s lineage and a classroom where the children of the ruling family were privately educated.
Moving forward While 17 sites have so far been added to the World Heritage List, ADACH is actively restoring and preserving many other sites of cultural significance. Work is under way to preserve several fortresses

Museums To learn more about the history of Al Ain, a visit to the city’s museums is a must. Al Ain National Museum is divided into two main sections – ethnographical and archaeological – and provides an overview of the country’s traditions and culture as well as information on the people who inhabited the area up to 8,000 years ago. As well as artefacts, there is also an interesting collection of photographs showing Abu Dhabi in the 1960s.

Natural beauty As well as its cultural significance, Al Ain’s natural attractions include the desert, oases, date palm plantations, wadis and mountains. The city’s six oases have sustained the region as far back as the 2nd millennium BC and remain an active element of the city today. The harvesting of dates and other crops continues to be preserved and is passed down through generations. To discover the natural beauty, visit Al Ain Oasis or Green Mubazzarah at the foot of Jebel Hafeet.
and historical places, including the Jahili mosque and fortress and the Bin Hadi House in the Hili Oasis. Work is also being carried out to revive the original uses of many buildings, such as the old traditional market in Al Qattarah. Many will also be used for new purposes in a bid to integrate the buildings into the infrastructure of the city. So why not take a step back in time and explore the heritage heart of the emirate. With the UAE having recently celebrated its 40 th year, it’s the ideal time to discover how far the country has come.

founding father The late Sheikh Zayed is one of the nation’s most loved and treasured figures. Concierge takes a look at the life of the UAE’s inspirational first president
Q You can’t go far in Abu Dhabi without seeing mention of Sheikh Zayed. The country’s first president and a loved and admired figure in history, there are roads, mosques, universities and bridges named after him. Sheikh Zayed has been credited for laying the foundations of the country’s success. Through his leadership, foresight and dedication to the people and the country, Sheikh Zayed became known around the world. He was highly regarded for sharing the country’s wealth with its people and his efforts to improve health, education and quality of life, not just in the Emirates but in many other countries as well. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was born around 1918. He was the youngest of four sons of Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler of Abu Dhabi from 1922 to 1926. Abu Dhabi in those days was a far cry from the wealthy emirate it is today and its people, even those who belonged to the ruling family, lived by simple means. The mainstay of the economy was fishing, pearl diving and agriculture, but these brought little wealth and the country was undeveloped. As such, formal schooling was rare and the young sheikh was taught to read and write and received lessons in Islam. He spent time in the desert with the Bedouin learning about their way of life and the environment. He was taught the traditional practice of falconry, which long remained a passion, and developed a love and respect for Arabian horses.

Early years In 1946 Sheikh Zayed became the Ruler’s representative in the Eastern Region, which centres on Al Ain. He quickly established himself as a capable leader and one willing to lead by good example. The sheikh wanted opportunities for the people of Al Ain and established the first modern school in the emirate, one which he funded with his own money. He also encouraged friends and relatives to contribute towards development of the region. A big believer in conservation and the environment, the sheikh had the falaj water transport system rebuilt, providing irrigation for the oases and other agricultural developments. As a result of his efforts, Al Ain is today known as the ‘garden city’ and the ‘oasis city’.
Ruler of Abu Dhabi Oil exploration had continued in the Gulf for many years before it was discovered in Abu Dhabi in 1958, yet it didn’t bring immediate wealth to the emirate. The then ruler, Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan Al Nahyan, was unsure whether the revenue would continue and chose to be frugal. His brother, Sheikh Zayed, believed the cash could greatly benefit the emirate and when he became ruler in 1966, he began to carry out his vision of developing the emirate. He injected money into schools, healthcare, the construction of an airport, housing, a sea port, roads and a bridge linking Abu Dhabi island to
“Real wealth is the hard work that benefits both the person and the community. It is immortal and eternal and becomes the value of the person and the nation” – Sheikh Zayed
S h e i k h Z ay e d Grand Mosque Visitors can pay their respects to the late leader by visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque where he is buried. Tours are held at regular times throughout the day and are free. For more information, see the Discover listings on Page 66 or visit www.szgmc.ae
the mainland. He also prioritised tree planting and the creation of a zoo in Al Ain in 1967. Just a year later, the British announced they would withdraw from a treaty with the Trucial States, which included the sheikhdoms of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah. The treaty offered protection by Britain in return for loyalty. The agreement ended on December 1, 1971, and the next day the United Arab Emirates was formed. Sheikh Zayed was appointed president of the new country. Together with the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, he had been instrumental in establishing the federation.
President of the UAE Sheikh Zayed continued to spread Abu Dhabi’s oil wealth not just within the emirate but throughout the country. He invested in education, believing it was the key to a successful future. He was quoted as saying, “Building good citizens is more difficult than building factories. Sophisticated nations are judged by the level of their population’s education.”

He was also passionate about the environment and wildlife and established not just the Al Ain Zoo but also the Arabian Wildlife Park on Sir Bani Yas Island. In fact, the survival of the Arabian oryx can be attributed to the successful breeding programme here. The species was declared extinct in the wild in the early 1960s, yet there are now more than 500 Arabian oryx on Sir Bani Yas Island and many have been released into the wild. A believer in peace and stability, the sheikh showed tolerance of other religions and was greatly respected by expatriates in the UAE. He also sought to bring greater peace within the Arabian Gulf and the broader Arab world and was known for his humanitarian and aid efforts around the world.
The legacy continues Sheikh Zayed passed away on November 2, 2004. He was in his late 80s and had battled deteriorating health for some time. His son Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan became Ruler of Abu Dhabi and President of the UAE. Although more than seven years have passed since Sheikh Zayed’s death, his legacy continues. To this day,
“The younger generation should know how our grandparents suffered and what they did for us despite their lack of resources. Knowing this they will double their effort and productivity to build on this inheritance” – Sheikh Zayed
the UAE and Abu Dhabi in particular is known for its generous donations to those in need, while also investing in and funding health and education around the world. Through bodies such as the Zayed Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, established by Sheikh Zayed before the formation of the UAE, the country is one of the most generous in the world. One of the greatest monuments to Abu Dhabi’s late ruler is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque where he is buried. The stunning mosque is symbolic of what he believed and what he wanted to achieve in life. The mosque was built using marble, precious stones and other material from around the world, a symbol of his desire for greater harmony, unity and cooperation between countries. It is also one of the few mosques in the UAE open to non-Muslims. This is because Sheikh Zayed wanted others to learn about Islam while encouraging greater religious tolerance. The extravagance of the structure is also a telling reminder of how far the UAE has come. From a struggling gulf state reliant on the sea for survival to a wealthy nation that invests in its people and its future, the UAE has a lot to be grateful for. It’s little wonder there is so much respect and passion for the late sheikh.

driving ambition Take in the views of the Arabian Gulf while teeing off at some of Abu Dhabi’s best golf courses
Q Yas Links 18 holes, 7,404 yards, par-72 The newest golf course in Abu Dhabi is the Kyle Phillipsdesigned Yas Links, the Middle East’s first true ‘links’ course. It offers views of the ocean from its prime position on Yas Island. Eights holes run along the coastline and all 18 offer views of the Gulf. Chris White, general manager at Yas Links, says the course offers a real challenge for golfers, forcing them to think strategically to score well. “It is not a course where you have to take the driver 90 percent of the time, so it makes you think about your game more,” he explains. The course has been designed in keeping with the traditional form of links golf commonly associated with the coastal towns of Scotland and Ireland, while incorporating the landscape of the region. “Yas Links offers something completely different from anything else in Abu Dhabi and the UAE,” says White. “It is a true links course; some have compared it with playing a course in Scotland, but in the sun.” Green fees: Eighteen holes, Sunday to Thursday AED550 (twilight rate AED450), Friday and Saturday AED850 (twilight rate AED650). Includes shared buggy and range balls Contact: 02 8107710

Saadiyat Beach Golf Club 18 holes, 7,806 yards, par-72 The spectacular Saadiyat Beach Golf Club has the only beachfront course in the Arabian Gulf. Designed by golfing legend Gary Player and operated by Troon Golf, the course offers several beachfront holes with spectacular views of Saadiyat Island’s blue waters and white beaches. Each hole has been individually designed and named by Player. They include everything from challenging par 3s with gently contoured greens, to par 5s with strategically positioned bunkers and water features aligning the immaculately shaped fairways. The course has also been designed to strict environmental guidelines, taking in factors such as the type of grass used, to minimise the impact on the local turtle habitat. In fact, golfers can even spot gazelles, turtles and dolphins. A clubhouse designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, who also designed the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, in the pipeline. Abu Dhabi City Golf Club Nine holes, 6,395 yards, par-70 Abu Dhabi City Golf Club is located in the heart of Abu Dhabi. The course is set in the middle of a racetrack, offering golfers a novel set of challenges over a quick nine holes. The course is an oasis of colour with scenic lakes, fountains and indigenous wild birds and despite having only nine holes, there is a set of alternate tees for the back nine. Water challenges come into play on five of the nine holes with testing dog-legs, while the par-5, 630-yard eighth hole with water hazards crossing the fairway requires extra thought. Surprisingly for a ninehole course, there are only two par-3 holes. The course offers an interesting game for players of all levels and being floodlit, it offers tee-off as late as 8.30pm. The golf academy includes a floodlit two-tiered driving range – the only one in the region – with a specially designed short-game area. The wildlife park has an emphasis on creatures from the Middle East and Africa. In fact some of its key attractions are white lions, white tigers and other big cats as well as the Arabian oryx and sand gazelle. In addition to the animal attractions, there is a children’s garden, playground and picnic areas as well as restaurants and kiosks. Among the unique experiences at the Al Ain Zoo is giraffe feeding, which
allows visitors to get up close to these magnificent creatures as they feed on carrots, lettuce and other tasty treats. The feeding takes place five times a day next to the Reptile House. There is also an impressive bird of prey show in the evenings giving visitors the opportunity to watch falcons, eagles, owls and vultures demonstrate their extraordinary hunting skills. Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital Get up close to one of the UAE’s most cherished animals at the world’s first public veterinary centre dedicated exclusively to falcon care. The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital opened in 1999 and has treated more than 42,000 patients, most from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain. It has since expanded to become an avian hospital for all birds, a boarding facility for falcons and other pets, a shelter for stray cats and dogs, and more recently one of Abu Dhabi’s most recommended tourist attractions. Visitors can join the two-hour Falcon World Tour to discover more about the bird on the UAE’s national emblem. They will visit a museum and hear about the falcon’s role in Bedouin culture, falconry and the good work done by the hospital. Visitors can also hold, touch and feed a falcon as well as take photographs. Where: Near Abu Dhabi International Airport When: Sunday to Thursday at 10am and 2pm. Arabian Wildlife Park Take a safari through the 4,200-hectare Arabian Wildlife Park and spot some of the region’s most endangered animals, including the Arabian oryx, sand gazelle and Arabian mountain gazelle. Taking up approximately half of Sir Bani Yas Island, the nature reserve is home to several thousand free-roaming animals, including predators and scavengers such as the cheetah and hyena. On the safaris, visitors take a seat in the back of open 4x4s and keep their eyes peeled. Fortunately, many of the animals are in abundance and live in herds so it is not hard to spot them. Even the cheetahs have tracking devices attached to their collars so the guides know where to find them. The cheetahs were introduced to the island as part of a conservation programme and while they were brought up in captivity, they have been taught to hunt and fend for themselves. Visitors can also take mountain bike tours through the wildlife park, or go snorkelling to explore the underwater world.

keeping time With so many watches to choose from, where’s a man to start?
Q There are few ways to reliably measure a man’s self image, but one is by his wristwatch. From elegant chronographs, which set the tone for evening wear, to activity-inspired timepieces that let slip a sporting passion, a watch is the sole piece of jewellery to reveal the wearer’s character. Once the jacket sleeve recedes it has the power to pigeonhole who he is and how he lives, and for that reason the traditional watch sellers of Italy coined the phrase, ‘a well-dressed man owns at least three timepieces’. But selecting a watch is an art of its own. From specific brands, to periods and types, it’s difficult to know where to start. If you’re keen to expand your watch collection but can’t decide which timepiece to invest in, let Concierge lead the way with the ideal watch for your lifestyle.

Dinner with the stars As the city hosts the annual Gourmet Abu Dhabi festival, its culinary credentials are set to be further boosted with the launch of restaurants by Gary Rhodes and Juan Amador
Q Words by Amanda Tomlinson
A mark of a world-class city is its level of culinary offering. London, Paris, Tokyo and New York, to name just a few, have some of the best restaurants on the planet with the biggest culinary stars serving the city’s elite. For some, the Middle East may not immediately spring to mind as a gourmet destination, but for years Dubai has been attracting the cream of the world’s Michelin-star and celebrity chefs. With Nobu Matsuhisa, Marco Pierre White, Pierre Gagnaire, Jamie Oliver, Gary Rhodes, Gordon Ramsay, Vineet Bhatia and many more making their presence felt in the emirate, it’s little wonder that they are now setting their sights on Abu Dhabi as they expand their empires. Marco Pierre White was one of the first to see the potential in Abu Dhabi. He opened Marco Pierre White Steakhouse & Grill and Frankie’s – a collaboration with famed jockey Frankie Dettori – at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr in 2009. A year later Hakkasan, a high-end Chinese restaurant from a well-known Michelin-star stable, opened at Emirates Palace, while world-renowned glamour hotspot Cipriani launched at Yas Yacht Club at the end of 2010. But the stakes are being raised this year with three-star Michelin chef Juan Amador launching his debut Middle East restaurant at the Park Rotana during this month’s Gourmet Abu Dhabi and British celebrity chef Gary Rhodes setting up shop at the soon-to-open St. Regis Abu Dhabi.

Master gastronomer While Amador Restaurant & Cellar is Juan Amador’s first restaurant in the region, it’s not his first foray in Abu Dhabi. He has been a regular guest chef at Gourmet Abu Dhabi, which will be held throughout the city’s top restaurants from February 8 to 23, and his restaurant’s opening on February 9 is sure to be a highlight of the two-week culinary festival. The son of Spanish parents, Amador was raised in Germany and is famed for his Spanish-influenced molecular gastronomy. His innovative techniques bring unique flavours, aromas and special combinations of temperature and texture to his creations. He was awarded three Michelin stars for his restaurant Amador in Langen, Germany, and was also named ‘best chef’ in 2007 and 2008 by Bertelsmann restaurant guide. He promises that his new restaurant will not disappoint. Instead he believes it will raise the bar among Abu Dhabi’s haute cuisine options.
“The restaurant will serve a combination of European and Arabic cuisine and mix a variety of cultures, f lavours and aromas. It will combine characteristics of my existing cuisine and also what I learned about local tastes, products and ingredients when I visited [Abu Dhabi in 2011],” says chef Amador. “Abu Dhabi is now full of great restaurants, but I think our Spanish-influenced avant-garde cuisine can have a very positive influence on the emirate’s culinary scene,” he adds. The restaurant will house two sections – one for for ma l d i n i ng, wh ich ca n

accommodate between 54 and 88 covers, and an informal tapas cellar with capacity for 77 guests. The decision to split the restaurant made business sense, he says, particularly with Park Rotana’s location close to government and commercial centres. “Daytime custom provides any restaurant with substantial revenue, so it was important to find a way of incorporating a casual, relaxed setting within the restaurant and that is why we settled on the tapas cellar concept,” the chef explains. “The cellar will remain open in the evening, but we expect the main restaurant to come to the fore when the sun goes down.” 4

of luxury. The ultra-modern, 165-cover restaurant has a private entrance in the east wing of Emirates Palace and constantly attracts a stream of the city’s most discerning diners. At the culinary helm is Lee Kok Hua, who previously worked at Hakkasan London under head chef Tong Chee Hwee for five years. Kok Hua’s menu has been designed for the UAE market, while still featuring Hakkasan classics such as Peking duck with Royal Beluga caviar, steamed dim sum platters and grilled wagyu beef with King soya sauce.
While few realise the extent of Hakkasan’s Abu Dhabi connection, the restaurant has become one of the hottest locations in the city, elevating dining to a new level of luxury

Star attraction Well-known UK celebrity chef Marco Pierre White – who handed back his three Michelin stars when he retired from the kitchen – may have been one of the first big names to stamp his mark on Abu Dhabi, but following closely behind was internationally famous Hakkasan, which opened in June 2010. The world-class luxury Chinese restaurant launched in London’s West End in 2001 and was later awarded a Michelin star. Owned by Abu Dhabi property investment company Tasameem, the Hakkasan group has expanded to include not just London and Abu Dhabi, but also Miami, New York, Dubai and Mumbai, with London’s Michelin-star dim sum restaurant Yauatcha also in its stable. While few realise the extent of Hakkasan’s Abu Dhabi connection, the restaurant has become one of the hottest locations in the city, elevating dining to a new level

Going gourmet While this month sees the much-anticipated launch of Amador Restaurant & Cellar, visitors will have the chance to sample creations from some of the best chefs in the world at Gourmet Abu Dhabi from February 8 to 23. Among the top names is festival regular and three-star Michelin chef Bruno Mènard, a firm believer in ‘neo-classic’ French cuisine. His Tokyo restaurant, L’Osier, is consistently awarded the highest accolades and has been voted one of the 10 best French restaurants outside of France. He will be hosted by Bord Eau at the Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri. The list of guest chefs is a star-studded affair with 26 Michelin stars between them, but there are also stars of a different kind. Tipped to be one of the biggest draws is Australian chef and judge of the hit TV series Masterchef Australia, George Calombaris, who will host two dinners and a masterclass.

Also enlivening the Gourmet Abu Dhabi experience is Venetian cartoonist Ennio Marchetto. After performing at the Edinburgh Festival he became something of a cult hit, achieving massive critical acclaim. He has since performed in over 70 countries from Singapore to Mexico and will entertain guests at the Comedian Night with international masterchef William Ledeuil on February 9 at the Crowne Plaza Abu Dhabi. And of course, Juan Amador will showcase his delectable cuisine at the Park Rotana hotel from February 14 to 17. He will also host a culinary masterclass on February 15 and a château dinner with Domaine du Pegau on February 18. Park Rotana’s director of food and beverage Prem Calais is excited by what Amador will bring to Abu Dhabi’s culinary scene. “Abu Dhabi now boasts a number of topend restaurants providing exceptional innovative concepts and creating a diverse selection for customers compared with two decades ago,” he says. “Amador Restaurant & Cellar will be the first of its kind in the country. We have a three-star Michelin chef, known to be one of the leaders of avant-garde cuisine, combining culinary influences from different cultures, creating dishes with almost scientific precision. “Amador Restaurant & Cellar will elevate the culinary scene to a whole new level yet again.”

food for romance Make a date with your loved one at one of the city’s cosiest restaurants this Valentine's Day
Q Words by Amanda Tomlinson
Paris may be one of the world’s most loved-up cities and Venice may have gondolas built for two, but when it comes to romantic dining, Abu Dhabi can hold its own. The options are endless. Choose from a secluded location on a desert island with a gourmet meal prepared especially, or charter a luxury yacht for a private cruise along the Corniche with a tailored menu. If restaurant dining is preferred, Abu Dhabi has a number of venues with amazing views, dim lighting and secluded sections to ensure the night is a great success. Gaze out at a marina full of luxury yachts, the glowing city skyline or even the spectacular Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Of course, the cuisine is equally sensational with almost every variety on offer, from fine French fare to trendy Asian fusion and everything in between. Many of the city’s top restaurants offer special packages for Valentine’s Day, with set menus, French Champagne and gifts of heart-shaped chocolate cakes and strawberries. The high-end restaurants sometimes even offer diamonds or pearls as gifts. So whether you’ve been with your loved one for five months or 50 years, a romantic meal in one of Abu Dhabi’s finest restaurants will be a night to remember.

Quest
M U S T T RY
One of the most exciting restaurants to open in Abu Dhabi at the end of 2011 was Quest. With breathtaking views from the 63rd floor, this contemporary pan-Asian restaurant is one of the city’s hottest venues, not to mention one of the most romantic. Its intimate ambience makes Quest the optimal setting for romance. Couples have the option of dining at the Engage table, which is a private room for one table with arguably the best views in Abu Dhabi. In the main dining area, the ambience is intimate, chic and sophisticated while remaining cozy and welcoming. At the helm is chef Benjamin Whatt whose pursuit of excellence is firmly established in the value of tradition. With intimate dining areas designed for romance, amazing views and dishes prepared by a chef with passion, Quest should be at the top of any itinerary.

Bord Eau
M U S T T RY
No one does romance like the French and for lovers of fine French cuisine, there is no better place than Bord Eau. With stunning views over the water and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Bord Eau is a feast for the senses. Choose mouthwatering dishes from the impressive à la carte menu or leave the decisions to chef de cuisine, Alexandre Pernetta, who can prepare a tasting menu using fresh seasonal produce flown in from France. Each dish can be expertly paired with French wine. Those who order from the à la carte menu will find it hard to go past the signature dishes. Try foie gras terrine with fig jelly and dates, seared scallops with apple butter and the decadent venison with girole mushrooms and five spice. Consistently voted one of Abu Dhabi's best restaurants, Bord Eau will not disappoint those looking for romance. The lighting is dim, the furnishings soft and with a touch of French romance, it will be a meal to remember.
A warming winter dish is the braised veal cheek with parsnip, creamy mash and carrots

Sontaya
‘Sensual’ is a sharing dessert for two. It has a raspberry and coconut foam with fresh lychee, vanilla streudel and crunchy chocolate pearl centre.
Sontaya is a restaurant for lovers... and lovers of fine South-East Asian cuisine. It has one of the most impressive locations in Abu Dhabi, overlooking the pristine white beach of Saadiyat Island. Its floating glass-walled pavilions set amid a series of interconnected ponds and pools create a setting unlike anything else in the city and the view over the beach and sea at sunset is nothing short of spectacular. The minimalist interior enhanced by timber-clad columns does not detract from the stunning views and fine cuisine, while the terraces make an ideal location to enjoy sundowners before sampling delicacies from Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam. In the kitchen, Thai chef Khampan Pukdangpan creates dishes for sharing. The favourite is sabai sabai, a selection of grilled marinated lamb chops, wagyu beef, tiger prawns and red snapper. Teatro
M U S T T RY B aked Hawaiian is a popular dessert of coconut sponge cake layered with mango and coconut ice creams, topped with meringue and served with passion fruit coulis and fresh berries.
For many, the thought of Venice conjures up images of gondola rides along narrow canals and mysterious lovers hiding behind delicate Venetian masks. For a slice of the Italian city in the UAE capital, secure a reservation at Teatro. Themed on the famous sinking city, the restaurant is decorated with Venetian masks, hand-blown glass, beaded crystal features and deep warm colours to create an intimate, yet informal setting. Its cuisine, however, is not confined to merely Italian. Diners can choose from Thai, Chinese, Japanese sushi and Indian dishes, ensuring there is something to please the fussiest of palates. The wine list features 200 bins, including a fine selection by the glass and a collection of Champagne. What makes this theatrical restaurant romantic however, is the soft lighting and candles, deep red curtains and special decorations. For extra romance, take a seat on the terrace overlooking the pool and gardens and gaze at the stars. Where: Park Rotana When: Daily 6 to 11pm (bar open until 1am) Contact: 02 6573333

my LIFE IN ABU DHABI

Lebanese civil engineer Fouad Chemlati offers his suggestions on what to see and do while visiting the capital
1 Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque 2 Formula Rossa, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi
1
I have lived in Abu Dhabi for three years. I moved here for the career opportunities, but what I really like about it is the secure and stable environment as well as the friendly people. As a civil engineer, I’m involved in all site and construction-related activities. I’ve worked on a range of projects, from F16 aircraft hangars to palaces to industrial buildings. One of the more well-known projects I worked on recently was the Royal Caviar Company factory. This company is helping to put the UAE on the map as the first caviar-producing, fish-farming country in the region. I live in the Al Bandar area, which is near Yas Island, Abu Dhabi Golf Club and the newly openedWestin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa. It may be on the outskirts of the city, but it’s actually only 15 minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi, which increases the number of leisure options available to me. Mostly in my spare time I like to practise yoga, play basketball and go swimming.
I suggest people visit Ferrari World Abu Dhabi to experience the world’s fastest rollercoaster. It’s a fun theme park with a lively ambience. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is also a must-see as it resembles the culture of the UAE. For shopping I send visitors to the new wing at Marina Mall as it is packed full of shops representing all of the major brands. Abu Dhabi has a number of fine restaurants and bars. Benihana at the Beach Rotana is my top recommendation for sushi lovers, while Marco Pierre White Steakhouse & Grill at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr is a favourite with meat lovers. Also at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, Frankie’s serves delicious Italian cuisine, while Cipriani at the Yas Yacht Club and the restaurants at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi rate highly for Italian food as well. For a few drinks, I recommend Captain’s Arms, an English pub at Le Méridien Abu Dhabi, while TheYacht Club at the InterContinental Abu Dhabi is a stylish bar that serves Japanese snacks.

Capital of culture Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island will soon be home to the world-famous Louvre and Guggenheim museums. The Abu Dhabi government is spending over US$1 billion to bring these cultural landmarks to the emirate. They have also signed some of the world’s most renowned architects, including Frank Gehry who shot to fame with his design of the Guggenheim Bilbao in Spain, and Jean Nouvel, who designed the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. In addition, the Zayed National Museum will be designed by Lord Norman Foster, making the Cultural District the only place in the world to have buildings designed by five Pritzker Prize winners. The Louvre Abu Dhabi is set to open in 2013, while the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open some time later. Learn more about Saadiyat Island’s Cultural District at an exhibition at Emirates Palace which is open daily from 10am to 10pm. Entry is free. For more information, phone 02 6908207. SHOPPING ETIQUETTE Women should make sure that shoulders and the top half of legs are covered in Abu Dhabi’s malls and souks. Keep in mind that the UAE is a Muslim country and respect its culture. Take care not to wear anything too revealing or suggestive. Comfortable, light clothing is recommended, but it’s wise to carry a wrap or jumper in shopping malls as the air conditioning can be chilly. Refrain from public displays of affection.

THE FRIDAY BRUNCH While it may take its name from the meal eaten between breakfast and lunch, confusingly the UAE’s Friday brunch is more of an afternoon commitment. Generally lasting from noon until 4pm, Friday brunch is hosted by most of the city’s hotels and is typically an all-you-caneat buffet with unlimited beverages. Brunches range from cheap and cheerful (AED100 and up) to a sophisticated gourmet affair (AED500) with premium beverages such as Champagne. They are hugely popular with the expat community so be sure to book in advance.

Smoking shisha (hubbly bubbly) is very popular in Abu Dhabi. The Middle Eastern water pipe, which is thought to have originated around 500 years ago, purifies and cools the smoke from flavoured tobacco heated on top of the pipe by coals. It costs approximately AED35 to AED50 to smoke and the most popular flavours are apple, mint, strawberry, apricot and grape. Although relaxing and sociable, estimates suggest that an hour of shisha smoking equates to inhaling as many as 50 cigarettes. If you’re after an authentic taste of Middle Eastern culture, however, smoking shisha is a must. Just remember not to inhale too deeply, blow down the pipe to get rid of smoke build-up in the water and share your shisha among friends. This is a social tradition and to be enjoyed in groups or couples.
