WELCOME_AUH_JAN12.indd 7

First of all, let me start by wishing you a happy 2012. The promise of a New Year brings with it vigour, enthusiasm and the opportunity to pursue fresh goals, and for Abu Dhabi it is no different. Over the coming 12 months, we will see the destination mature further to give visitors a much more diversified and in-depth emirate-wide offering, which we hope will attract many new guests and keep old friends coming back. True to our word, we have started this year at full sail, plotting a course for a record 2012. For those of you that have taken a stroll down the city’s sweeping Corniche, you may very well have encountered our newest sporting endeavour, the Volvo Ocean Race. Abu Dhabi has made history by becoming both the first Arabian destination to enter a team in the race and to be a stopover hosting the fleet of this ‘Everest of Sailing’. On the Corniche, you will find a purpose-built ‘Destination Village’ – the size of eight football pitches – which is hosting the six competing yachts, including our very own Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, the world’s best sailors and a wealth of free activities, entertainment, concerts, rides, sailing schools and so much more. The Destination Village celebrations will run daily until January 14, so there is plenty of time to see all the action. Just 12 days after the Volvo Ocean Race leaves town we’ll be welcoming the world’s golfing giants to Abu Dhabi Golf Club for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. This promises to be a tough battle with Martin Kaymer out to defend his title; Paul Casey looking to lift the Falcon trophy for the third time; three reigning Major holders, and the Abu Dhabi debut of the legendary Tiger Woods. It’s a golfer’s dream field. We in Abu Dhabi are pretty buoyant about the year ahead – it’s started well for us. The emirate has been named ‘The Middle East’s Safest City’ in the Mercer Consulting Quality of Living Report. The International Association of Golf Tour Operators has named Abu Dhabi ‘Golf Destination Of The Year Middle East & Africa’ while the USA’s prestigious Travel + Leisure magazine has ranked the emirate among its Top 12 ‘Hottest Destinations of 2012.’ These are great credentials on which to build and on I hope your experience bears out this fulsome praise. So enjoy your time in Abu Dhabi and we hope to welcome you back time and again.

Mubarak Al Muhairi Director General, ADTA

In focus Regarded as the world’s toughest sailing event, the Volvo Ocean Race arrives in Abu Dhabi this month. This will be the first time that the prestigious event has visited the Middle East and something of a coup for the emirate, which itself has a rich maritime heritage. A marathon test of sailing skill and human will, the ultimate endurance race lasts eight months and covers five continents. Home hopes will rest on the Azzam yacht of Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, skippered by British double Olympic champion Ian Walker. Catch the sailing action at the purpose-built Destination Village while enjoying free events and activities throughout. See page 34 for more details.. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the most awe-inspiring landmarks not only in Abu Dhabi, but the entire UAE. Its external beauty, attention to detail and humbling intensity of its religious blueprint will amaze people from all walks of life. I believe the best way to know about the uniqueness of a country and its people is by learning how it all began. Heritage Village beautifully captures the history of this nation and its forefathers and is located on the Breakwater close to Marina Mall. Showcasing history in the making, Manarat Al Saadiyat’s Saadiyat Story exhibition highlights the island’s vision including details of the Cultural District which will position Abu Dhabi as the Middle East’s art capital. Emirati Expressions, an exhibition of photographs by Emirati artists, is also on display here until January 28. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is not only for car enthusiasts but anyone with a sense of adventure, or is plain curious about the world’s first Ferrari theme park. My favourite ride is Formula Rossa, the fastest rollercoaster in the world. This is a perfect attraction for a day with the family. Abu Dhabi is a city of islands and has plenty of mangroves. This makes it perfect for leisurely guided tours around the coastal waters and inland areas. Noukhada’s kayaking tours take you through the natural mangrove forests dotted around the islands in view of the rising Abu Dhabi skyline. More details are available on their website www.noukhada.ae

ANCIENT VESSELS IN MODERN TIMES Dhow racing showcases traditional craftsmanship and keeps UAE history alive

Q WORDS BY ADAM JANKIEWICZ

The graceful Arabian dhow is a cultural symbol of the UAE, its billowing sails reflected in the design of the iconic Burj Al Arab, one of the early landmarks of neighbouring Dubai’s success. This traditional wooden sailing boat, whose name derives from the Persian word ‘dawh’ meaning sailing vessel, was originally used for transportation, pearl diving and trading. Today, these majestic vessels can be seen under full sail on the horizon each winter, racing over the waves of the Arabian Gulf. The boats are crewed mainly by teams of young UAE nationals under stiff competition, with big prize money at stake. Traditional sailing skills, passed from generation to generation, are still in use in these races, as sailors hoist the boom carrying the sail by hand, using traditional block and tackle, and navigate by the methods of their forefathers. The huge white triangular sails, called lateens, distinguish the dhow from other sailboats. When the boats are under way, the massive sails can be seen from a great distance, making dhow racing an easy sport to watch from shore.

DIS C O VER/DHO W RA C ING

Building on tradition Frédéric Dignef of Outsider Sails has been making sails for dhow racing for five years. This is an area where tradition gives way to technology in favour of speed. “The sails for dhows are different because the dhows don’t have to sail upwind. The races are always downwind or beam reaching so we make the sails more deep and powerful,” he says. “The sails were made traditionally on the beach with no stitching machine, no computer and cheap cloth. When [companies] started sponsoring races, prize money became an important factor for owners so the quest for a better sail became vital for winning.” The curved boats were originally made from teak and teak is still the rule, although today’s boat-builders sometimes incorporate fibreglass and steel into the framework for strength and maneuverability. The teak may be varnished, but paint is not permitted. Sails must be white and boats can cost up to AED500,000 (US$136,000) to build.

Visitors can see dhows being crafted the traditional way at heritage sites in the UAE. At the Al Bateen boatyard in Abu Dhabi, craftsmen use the original hand tools and the ancient knowledge and skill passed down through the generations to produce the UAE’s best racing dhows without drawings, but to the exact specifications the sport dictates. According to Saeed Hareb, president of the UAE Marine Sports Federation and managing director of the Dubai International Marine Club, dhows constitute the biggest fleet of traditional boats in the world. In an interview with Valencia Sailing, he talked about the importance of preserving the dhow-sailing tradition in the UAE for young nationals. “Sailing is in their blood,” he said. “Their fathers and their grandfathers were all sailors because they lived by the sea and it was the only means of transportation and trading. In addition, a lot of them were fishermen so they have known the dhows all their lives. Yet, life and society are evolving and as a result we don’t want them to turn their back to the sea.”

And since all the boats on the start line are the same, the competition is fair and winning comes down to skill, experience, strategy and strength. The sails are not hoisted until the race begins and participants must do this with skill and speed in order to get going quickly. There are three classes – according to the length of the competing dhows – 22ft, 43ft and 60ft. During the Louis Vuitton Trophy held in Dubai during November 2010, the international crews were given the opportunity to race in traditional dhows. They were impressed by the lack of sophisticated instruments and with the sailors judging speed by the wind on their faces. Before the race they commented on the small size of the rudder and speculated about the possibilities for capsizing. But they were all smiles after the race, which was won by the Franco-German alliance All4One. The racing season runs from September to May. The final and most prestigious race of the season is from Sir Bu Nuair Island, off the coast of Abu Dhabi, to Dubai, about 100 nautical kilometres, following the historic journey of pearl divers after months of being away from home. The race offers prize money of AED10 million (US$2.7 million) and attracts around 100 teams.

Past and present

Abu Dhabi’s skyline cuts a fine image against the night sky. A picture of modernity with its growing collection of skyscrapers, it contrasts nicely against the traditional dhow sailing vessels that cruise up and down the Corniche each day. For unrivalled views of the rapidly changing skyline, head to Heritage Village on the Breakwater near Marina Mall or take a sightseeing cruise along the Corniche. Dinner cruises are another way to get a different perspective of the city. To learn more about the emirate’s past, take some time to wander through Heritage Village. As well as sweeping views of the Corniche and skyline, there is a re-creation of a Bedouin village with a souk and desert camp, a museum displaying artefacts, photographs, weapons and clothing, a re-creation of a beach hut with a barjeel (wind tower) and an example of the falaj water transport system. 24

Island escape Ever wanted to be stranded on a desert island? Concierge knows just the right places

Q W O R D S B Y A m a n da T o m l i n so n

With more than 200 natural and manmade islands, Abu Dhabi is the ideal place to find your sea legs and go exploring. The majority of the islands are uninhabited and off limits to the public, but there are a few where visitors can drop anchor and spend hours or even days soaking up the sunshine and wallowing in the clear waters. Whether you are chartering a yacht, joining an organised tour or going it alone, Abu Dhabi’s islands provide a welcome escape from the busy city.

Sir Bani Yas Island A short seaplane flight, or two-and-a-halfhour drive from Abu Dhabi city, lies Sir Bani Yas Island, home to the Arabian Wildlife Park. The park was created by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the country’s first president, as part of his vision to ‘green the desert’. He wanted to make the desert more suitable for human settlement and provide a haven for endangered wildlife. As a result, several million trees were planted and many animal species were introduced to the island for breeding. Among them were gazelles, oryx and ostriches. Under this programme, the beautiful Arabian oryx (pictured previous page) has been rescued from the brink of extinction. Today guests visiting or staying at Desert Islands Resort & Spa can take a nature and wildlife drive through the park to see native animals as well as cheetahs, giraffes and hyenas. Other nature-based activities are available, such as mountain biking, kayaking through mangroves, sailing and snorkelling. Soon the island will be home to a watersports and equestrian centre as well as luxurious lodges located on t he beachfront and in the wildlife park. Explore the island or relax in the beautiful and tranquil surrounds. The choice is yours. Contact: 02 8015400 or www.desertislands.com

Futaisi Island Ride a purebred Arabian horse or a camel around the island or join a mini-bus tour and discover an abundance of wildlife. The activities are varied on Futaisi Island, just a short boat ride from Abu Dhabi city. Alternatively, take a bicycle and complete the tour in your own time. Commonly seen creatures include gazelles that are endemic to the island, endangered sea eagles, dhub lizards and osprey. Futaisi is a transit point for migrating birds and visitors will often spot flamingoes on the shores. As well as hidden lagoons in the mangroves, those who venture out into the surrounding shallow waters may be lucky enough to spot green sea turtles and dolphins. Chalet and suite accommodation is available for overnight guests, while day trips are also possible. The AED250 fee includes boat transfers to and from the island, an island tour and use of the beaches and swimming pool. Entry is free for children under five and AED150 for children aged six to 12. The boat leaves Abu Dhabi at 9.30am and returns at 6pm. Contact: 02 6666601 or www.futaisi.com

Dalma Island Discover a more traditional side of Abu Dhabi life on Dalma Island, one of the oldest inhabited settlements in the UAE, dating back 7,500 years. The island was a hub for the pearl diving industry and was referred to as Pearl Island on old maps, yet with more than 200 freshwater wells, it also served as a watering hole for passing ships. While the local pearl industry suffered greatly with the creation of the cultured pearl, fishing is still a mainstay of the local economy and visitors can watch traditional dhows as they bring in the day’s haul. History is very important on Dalma Island. It has some of the best preserved buildings from the early 20 th century. In other areas of the country, mosques and houses from that period were rebuilt, however on Dalma Island they have been preserved, making it a haven for history buffs. Those interested in learning about the history of the region’s pearling trade can call into the Dalma Island Pearl Museum. Dalma is part of the Desert Islands cluster. Cruising the Corniche Watch the sun set while strolling along Abu Dhabi’s beachfront or cool off in the warm, inviting waters of the Arabian Gulf

Q Words by Amanda Tomlinson

Abu Dhabi’s beautiful Corniche stretches more than seven kilometres with sandy white beaches, playgrounds and parks, cafés and restaurants, walking and cycling paths and even a beginners’ wakeboard park. It is undoubtedly one of the city’s greatest assets and is popular with both residents and visitors. One of the best ways to enjoy the Corniche is by foot, however visitors can hire bikes or buggies and make use of the bike path that runs the full length and provides a safe and leisurely alternative to riding on the road. It’s also a fun and efficient way to get from one end to the other. Bikes can be hired from four stations along the Corniche for AED30 per hour for adults and AED20 for children, while buggies cost AED20 for 30 minutes. For those who prefer to walk, there are numerous benches, cafés and shops along the path that provide a break in the stroll.

Along the beachfront, visitors can stop at the public beach is two kilometres long and begins at the southern end of the Corniche. The beach has swimming areas, gardens, pathways, beach volleyball courts, play areas, amenities and cafés. At least 170 umbrellas are dotted along this stretch of the beach to provide shade, while sunloungers allow visitors to enjoy the beautiful beach in comfort. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards and a floating fence prevents swimmers from heading too far out to sea. The beach is open from 7.30am to midnight and entry costs AED5 per family. Another beach further along, which is open from 7am to 10pm, offers entry

for AED10 per person with sunlounger hire for AED25. Towards the middle of the Corniche is a permanent beginners’ wakeboard park which is open from noon to 6pm and is free to use. Experts are on hand to offer tips and advice on how to improve technique. For light snacks and refreshments there is a collection of cafés and kiosks along the boardwalk overlooking the sea. There are also shops selling beachgoing essentials, such as flip flops, hats and suncream. So whether it’s a day spent topping up a tan on the sandy white beach, or a leisurely afternoon bike ride as the sun sets, the Corniche is a quintessential Abu Dhabi experience.

On the high seas Warm Arabian hospitality will greet weary sailors when they arrive in the capital this month for the gruelling,round-theworld Volvo Ocean Race

Q Words by Amanda Tomlinson

In generations gone by, Abu Dhabi’s people made a living from the sea. They fished it for food and income, and pulled shiny pearls from its depths. Their traditional wooden dhows crossed its length swapping goods from neighbouring countries. While pearling and fishing may have been replaced by oil as the country’s main source of income, Abu Dhabi’s affinity with the sea continues. The emirate has more than 200 islands – some inhabited, some merely desert – and while there are now luxury yachts cruising the Gulf, dhows are still plentiful. With this rich maritime history and traditions that still run deep, it seems a natural choice for Abu Dhabi to be included in the Volvo Ocean Race, a 39,000-nautical mile yacht race for hardcore sailors.

Meet the teams

Everest of sailing The Volvo Ocean Race started in the Spanish port of Alicante on October 29. Six teams left for Cape Town, South Africa, on November 5, however three (including Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing) retired from the first leg due to damage. On December 11, the teams set sail for Abu Dhabi and were expected to arrive amid much fanfare on New Year’s Day. Among the teams are hometown heroes Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, skippered by seasoned sailor Ian Walker, a double Olympic medallist who has previously competed in the Volvo Ocean Race as well as the America’s Cup. He will be drawing on this extensive experience during the nine-month journey. “The Volvo Ocean Race is mentally and physically exhausting. The whole project is quite daunting but it is easier to comprehend having done the race before,” says Walker, one of the world’s leading helmsmen and tacticians. The race has been dubbed the ‘Everest of sailing’ and it’s easy to see why. It passes through four of the world’s most treacherous oceans and seven continents, racing day and night for 20 days at a time between ports.

Each team has 11 professional crew and each person has been tasked with a different job in addition to sailing duties. There are two medically trained sailors on board along with an engineer, sailmaker and non-sailing media person. This is extreme racing. Crews have to make do with freeze-dried food as no fresh produce is taken on board. They contend with temperatures ranging from -5 to +40 degrees Celsius, yet take just one change of clothes. Hunger and sleep deprivation are common.

Azzam Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing’s yacht is called Azzam, which is an Arabic word meaning determined. The stateof-the-art vessel weighs about 14,000 kilograms and is the height of a 12-storey building from the base of the keel to the top of the mast. She is almost as long as two London doubledecker buses.

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing is the most intercontinental team ever assembled for the Volvo Ocean Race, representing seven nationalities and five continents. Among them are Emirati sailors Adil Khalid, the UAE’s first sailing Olympian, and reserve Butti Ahmed Al Muhairi, who comes from a long line of dhow sailors. The duo, who are competing in the Volvo Ocean Race for the first time, beat 120 Emirati hopefuls for a place in the team. The remaining five teams in this year’s race include current race leader Team Telefonica, skippered by dual Olympic medallist Iker Martinez; Camper with Emirates Team New Zealand in their first Volvo Ocean Race campaign; Groupama sailing team, skippered by French offshore legend Franck Cammas; Puma Ocean Racing, returning for a second year under the leadership of Ken Read; and Chinese debutants Team Sanya, led by Volvo Ocean Race veteran and two-time winner Mike Sanderson.

A water wonderland With calm turquoise waters and endless sunshine, Abu Dhabi’s coastline is begging to be explored

Q W O R D S B Y A m a n da T o m l i n so n

With the calm waters of the Arabian Gulf, year-round sunshine and 800 kilometres of coastline, the UAE is the perfect place to jump aboard a luxury yacht and take in the magnificent sights from a different perspective. In Abu Dhabi there are more than 200 islands, an abundance of marine life and sandy white beaches to explore. Sightings of dolphins, turtles and birds are common and occasionally even rare dugongs are spotted. There is rarely a day that isn’t sunny and with calm seas and gentle breezes, there is no better way to spend your time in the emirate. There are many ways to enjoy the water in Abu Dhabi, whether it’s chartering a luxury yacht, setting off on a sailboat, joining a dinner cruise or an organised sightseeing trip. And for those who already have a yacht, the city’s marinas are nothing short of world class.

Charter a yacht

L a p o f l u x u ry

In Abu Dhabi, visitors can charter everything from a small motor yacht for just a few people to a 280-foot luxury vessel for up to 150 people, with 18 cabins and all the mod-cons one would expect, such as Jacuzzis, plunge pools, formal dining areas, bars and a fitness centre. Of course, there’s everything in between so all that needs to be determined is your itinerary, the number of guests, whether catering is needed and whether to include optional extras such as jetskis or snorkelling and diving equipment. Art Marine has yachts for charter for anything from one hour to one month and all that’s needed is 24 hours’ notice to arrange it. Guests can choose from a range of menus covering everything from soft drinks and snacks to canapés, or for a more personalised touch an onboard chef is available. Yachts, which vary in size from daytrip boats to large vessels, can accommodate two to 25 people. Art Marine is based at Yas Marina. Belevari Marine can organise charters on a range of vessels from luxury yachts to speed boats and even traditional Arabian dhows. Visitors can choose from a private charter where they dictate the itinerary, or join a group cruise to watch the sun set over the Arabian Gulf and take in the city skyline at night.

The UAE is home to some of the most luxurious yachts in the world. In 2006 Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai and Prime Minister and Vice President of the UAE, added a superyacht called Dubai to his fleet. Featuring eight decks spread across a 551-foot length, this gargantuan yacht can accommodate 115 people, has numerous restaurants, bars, a whole deck of suites, pools, Jacuzzis and a helipad among its facilities. It cost more than US$300 million (AED1.1 billion) to complete. Dubai was stripped of her title as the largest yacht in the world in 2010 by Russian businessman Roman Abramovich’s yacht, Eclipse.

3 InterContinental Abu Dhabi Marina

Set sail If the Volvo Ocean Race has you yearning for the sun on your face and the wind in your sails, then Abu Dhabi is the place to be. Nothing quite beats slicing through the water with the only the sound of the wind flapping the sails and the waves lapping the hull. There is no noisy engine, just a beautiful clear sky, fresh air and the wide blue yonder. If you’re joining a group day trip, or have arranged a crew to do the hard work, there is no need to pull up your sleeves and work up a sweat, but often that’s the best part. Abu Dhabi Charters offers three-hour trips aboard its vessel, Swan 42, with cruises setting sail in the morning, afternoon and sunset. Dusk in Abu Dhabi is particularly spectacular as the huge red sun dips behind the Arabian Gulf, painting the sky in a kaleidoscope of colours. Private charters can be arranged and allfemale crews are available.

Want moor? There are several marinas in Abu Dhabi where yacht owners can pull in. Yas Marina opened in 2009 with 143 berths. With fivestar concierge services and berths adjacent to Yas Marina Circuit Formula One racetrack boasting unique views, the rich and the famous have made their way to this location to enjoy the annual Grand Prix. The marina can accommodate yachts up to 66 metres in length and up to 150 metres on the pontoon adjacent to the Yas Marina entrance. Abu Dhabi’s newest marina opened last year at Emirates Palace. Managed by Art Marine, Yachts Marina can accommodate up to 186 vessels, while yacht owners enjoy the facilities of the luxurious hotel including the gym, pool and spa. Members can take advantage of its prime location on the western side of the hotel in a private bay and are able to sail straight out of the marina and on to the open sea. There is also separate berthing for eight superyachts. Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club offers 170 berths on the Corniche, the perfect location for accessing the centre of the city, while the InterContinental Abu Dhabi Marina, one of the emirate’s most picturesque, has 191 berths, 24-hour security and a members’ car park. With more than 40 marinas expected to open in the emirate over the next two decades, ideal weather conditions and ample areas to explore, Abu Dhabi is well on its way to becoming a major sailing and yachting destination.

battle of golf’s greats This year’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship has attracted the strongest field yet with half of the world’s top 10 players teeing off alongside golfing great Tiger Woods

Q Just a few months ago, Abu Dhabi was named 2012’s golf destination of the year in Africa and the Gulf States by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators. Just a few days earlier, it was announced that Tiger Woods would play for the first time in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. But Abu Dhabi is not new to the world of golf. It has been staging the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, the start of the European PGA Tour, since 2006 and has attracted a field of the world’s top golfers each year. Martin Kaymer has won the Falcon Trophy three times and will be looking to add a fourth to his CV, but he has to contend with a star-studded field including three reigning Major winners and past and present world number ones. With Tiger Woods, Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy, Charl Schwartzel, Darren Clarke, Lee Westwood, Jason Day and Kaymer, this year’s championship from January 26 to 29 couldn’t get more exciting.

“We are confident record crowds will gather to see Tiger Woods make his Abu Dhabi debut in his only competitive Middle East appearance of the year” – Faisal Al Sheikh Giants of golf This year’s field of players is shaping up to be the best yet and certainly one of the strongest seen in regional golf. But organiser, the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA), promises there’s more to come. “The giants of golf are coming to Abu Dhabi,” says Faisal Al Sheikh, events manager at the ADTA. “Traditionally, we have prioritised depth of field at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship and that has not changed for our seventh year. It is safe to say we are amassing the finest field to ever contest a Middle East tournament. “Much loved by Abu Dhabi galleries, the ever-popular Martin Kaymer will be back, but to win a fourth title he must overcome his sternest challenge yet. The collection of world-class contenders includes familiar faces and some new ones. We are confident that record crowds will gather to see Tiger Woods make his Abu Dhabi debut in what will be his only competitive Middle East appearance of the year.” But how will Woods stack up against defending champion Kaymer (of Germany), who sits at number four in the world? “Abu Dhabi is a special championship for me, obviously. I love the course and I’ve played some of my best golf on the National [course]. The amazing field means next year is going to be special and it will be my toughest Abu Dhabi challenge yet,” Kaymer says.

World number one Luke Donald (of England) will be looking to open the year on a high and maintain his ranking, but he’ll have number two Rory McIlroy (of Northern Ireland) hot on his heels. “Abu Dhabi is a great way to begin the year,” says McIlroy, 22. “Every year the field gets stronger and stronger and the championship gets harder to win. I finished second last year, so I’m hoping to go one better this time. I think there will be some truly great leaderboard tussles over the weekend.”

The championship Now in its seventh year, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship is held on the National Course at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club. Sanctioned by the European PGA Tour, it offers a US$2.7 million (AED9.9 million) prize fund. Last year the event attracted more than 40,000 spectators, all eager to catch a glimpse of their favourite golfer in action, but it’s not just the on-course play that keeps fans entertained. The newly expanded Championship Village has a range of attractions, prizes, games, competitions, live performances and family friendly fun, while in the HSBC Interactive Zone, visitors can test and hone their golf swing and putting techniques. And while the event is world class with its star-studded field, it is very accessible with tickets priced at AED50 for a day pass and AED150 for a four-day pass. Those who wear red on ‘Dress in Red’ Day, whether it’s an entire outfit or just accessories, can enter for free, as can children under 18. my LIFE IN ABU DHABI British construction manager Damian Cosgrove reveals his favourite activities in the capital

1

I’m a relative newcomer to Abu Dhabi. I arrived eight months ago from Dubai where I had lived for two and a half years. I initially moved there for work, intending to stay just six months. The recession was starting in the UK and work was drying up. A friend suggested I fly to Dubai and arrange some job interviews. Fortunately it worked out and I am still in the UAE three years later. I didn’t really know too much about Abu Dhabi before I moved here. Living in Dubai, I had travelled to the capital for two years but hadn’t explored too much. I now live in Khalifa ‘A’ and really like it. I’m a stone’s throw from Yas Marina, which is where I watched the Formula One Grand Prix in November. My two older brothers were here during that week so we attended the race and went to the concerts. Sir Paul

}

McCartney performed on the final night after the race and was brilliant. While my brothers were here we also did a desert safari, which I had never experienced despite living in the region for three years. It really surprised me how much fun it was. We also went to Al Forsan International Sports Resort, near where I live in Khalifa ‘A’. It’s a great place which has loads of things to do, such as go-karting, buggies, wakeboarding and paintball. You’re guaranteed a good time. In my spare time, I enjoy going for a round at one of Abu Dhabi’s golf courses. The main three are Abu Dhabi Golf Club, which will host the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship this month, Yas Links and Saadiyat Beach Golf Club. Yas and Saadiyat have great views of the Arabian Gulf.

time to take the plunge Superior watches for discerning divers

Q Omega Seamaster Ploprof 1200M In 1970, Omega launched the Seamaster Professional 600, one of the most robust and seaworthy divers’ wristwatches ever manufactured. Affectionately called the ‘Ploprof’, (the first letters of plongeur professionnel, French for ‘professional diver’), the watch has been updated and relaunched. Water resistant to 1,200 metres, the Ploprof not only has a bi-directional locking bezel, but also comes with a brushed mesh, shark-proof bracelet. The watch is equipped with a co-axial calibre 8,500. Its case cannot be mistaken for that of any other watch with the screwed-in crown, located at 9 o’clock, positioned under a protective buffer allowing freer wrist movement and preventing any unintentional manipulation. At 2 o’clock is the characteristic bezel-release security pusher with an orange anodised aluminium ring. Pressing the pusher allows the bezel to be rotated in either direction and then locked firmly in position, ensuring that it cannot be accidentally shifted during a dive. The Ploprof has an automatic helium escape valve located on the side of the case at 4 o’clock. This feature allows helium atoms to escape during decompression and is particularly useful for professional divers operating from diving bells. The oversized minute hand, which plays such an important role for divers, is crafted from orange anodised aluminium for legibility.

Longines Hydroconquest The HydroConquest is ideal for divers and enthusiasts of the open seas. Fitted with the L667 automatic self-winding mechanical movement, the watch produces 28,800 alternations per hour and offers a power reserve of 46 hours. Its abyss black dial, embellished with a ‘big12’ and superluminova luminescent indices, shows the date, hour and minutes and has a subdial for the seconds at 9 o’clock and the counters of the chrono mechanism: 30 minutes at 12 o’clock and 12 hours at 6 o’clock. Featuring a stainless steel case with screwed back and crown, the watch has an aluminium unidirectional turning bezel and lateral protection for the crown. The watch is water resistant to 300 metres and comes with a rubber strap with double security deployment buckle and diving extension piece.

Blancpain 500 Fathoms Big sister to the famous Fifty Fathoms watch (shown above), the 500 Fathoms is more high performance and hi-tech than ever. With an uncompromisingly sporty design, the timepiece is water resistant to 1,000 metres and equipped with a helium decompression valve, vital when diving in a closed environment. It is also fitted with a 48mm-diameter titanium case. To enhance readability, there are large phosphorescent numerals as well as luminescent coating on the hourmarkers, bezel markings and hands. The luminescent base of the black dial reveals its f luorescence only in the dark, while the date appears in white against a black background at 4 o’clock. The unidirectional ratcheted bezel facilitates handling and avoids any involuntary extension of the dive time. Crafted in titanium and sapphire crystal, it features a gentle cambered relief that reduces the risk of impacts. The 500 Fathoms is powered by the self-winding Calibre 1315, specifically designed to equip sports watches.

Parmigiani Fleurier One-One-Five and Pershing Chronograph For its first complete collection of aquatic chronographs, Parmigiani Fleurier has teamed with Pershing, one of the most prestigious boatbuilders in the world. The two brands have produced the Pershing Collection, which features two lines: the limited-edition ‘one-onefive’ timepiece, available in 18-carat rose gold and 950 palladium, and the Pershing Chronograph, available in steel with four dial variants. The ‘one-one-five’ comes in two dial versions, tan and silver, each of 115 pieces, incorporating the self-winding chronograph movement calibre PF 190. It also has an hour and minute display, as well as

chronograph seconds in the centre, a 12-hour counter, 30-minute counter plus the tachometer and large date indicator. The case is water resistant to 660 feet and has a rotary bezel. The non-limited-edition Pershing Chronograph comes with a graphite, silver, blue metal or amaranth dial. This steel-only piece is inspired by the silvery reflections of Pershing yacht hulls. It incorporates the new Parmigiani Fleurier ‘house’ self-winding chronograph movement calibre PF 334. Available with a rubber strap or steel bracelet, it is also water resistant to 200 metres and has a rotary bezel and engraved case-back representing one of Pershing’s flagship models.

A professional diving instrument, the Sea Hawk Pro 1000m was launched in 2006 and is a certified diving watch. Featuring a hard-wearing rubber strap and rugged steel case, the watch has luminescent indices on the dial and the hands for instant readability, even underwater in poor light conditions. For optimal integration and wearing comfort, the crown is positioned at 4 o’clock and is protected by a crown shield. It features a unidirectional rotating bezel and helium relief valve, which prevents damage to the case due to helium seeping into the watch after a deep dive. It also comes with a safety folding clasp with rapid extension system to allow the watch to be worn on top of a diving suit. To avoid any unintended opening, the clasp can only be opened by pressing the two push-buttons on its sides.

jewels of the sea A modern jewellery hub with a strong heritage, the UAE is the ideal place to buy a luxurious set of shining pearls

Q There is something wonderfully romantic about pearls, their creamy hue and shiny lustre is seductive. And nowhere more so than in Abu Dhabi, an emirate with a rich pearling history and thriving jewellery trade. Head to any of the shopping centres and see stores brimming with bright, gleaming pearls. But before delving into your pocket and purchasing that must-have piece, there are a few important points worth considering. “To be deemed perfect, a pearl should have extremely high lustre, excellent surface texture and it should be free of blemishes,” says Sahil Karani, director at Mikura Pearls. “It should also have a faultlessly round shape.”

58

59

Coloured kaleidoscope There is no international standard for grading pearls so different suppliers may not grade identical examples in the same way. Many reputable sellers, however, use the A, AA and AAA grading system with AAA being the most sought after. As well as lustre and shape, examine the surface of the pearl. It should be free of cracks and holes. Also consider the nacre, the thickness of its exterior. If a pearl has been harvested too early, its nacre may crack and flake. Look at drill holes with a magnifying glass where signs of damage are most likely to be found. The nacre should be at least 0.3mm deep or better, 0.5mm. With pink, black, blue, green and grey pearls available, which is the most popular and why?

“South Sea pearls come in varying colours from silvery white to blue grey and there are the brownish black pearls of Tahiti,” says Celina Pandey, marketing manager at Khalil Al Sayegh Jewellers. “Colour is purely a matter of personal choice.” According to Karani, it is still the traditional white pearl that tends to be more expensive. “This is because the overwhelming majority of demand is for white pearls,” he says. “White is the colour most typically associated with pearls from the discovery of the first natural pearls through to the culturing of Akoya, South Sea and Freshwater pearls. “Today, even though pearls are available in a variety of colours and hues, white remains the most sought after, especially in the larger South Sea pearls. “The rarity of finding a truly high-quality white South Sea pearl, however, makes it highly valuable and prized.”

Perfect pearls

Another UAE retailer with pearl expertise is Damas. As well as creating its own collections, Damas distributes luxury pieces from high-end brand Mikimoto, whose founder is credited with culturing the world’s first perfectly round pearl in 1893. Paspaley, another leading pearling company, recently made headlines for bringing the world’s largest pearl to Dubai. The precious South Sea gem was transported all the way from Australia for an exhibition at Atlantis The Palm, Dubai. Measuring a whopping 22mm in diameter, this priceless jewel of the sea is perfectly shaped and has a strong pink orient. Jewellers today sell cultured pearls, which are created when the oyster’s shell has been opened to insert an irritant, stimulating nacre production. This process, which was developed in the 1920s, destroyed the world’s pearl diving trade, which for decades was the emirate’s greatest source of revenue and accounted for as much as 95 percent of national incomes. Divers would risk life and limb collecting oysters. Holding their breaths for minutes at a time they would scour the seabed in search of the precious gems.

Cellular Power Infusion by La Prairie La Prairie’s most brilliant scientific achievement to date offers the key to youthful skin. Cellular Power Infusion simultaneously impacts on the three dimensions of the skin that are responsible for the ageing process: the energy units within each skin cell, the skin cell itself and the structural makeup of the skin. With a three-pronged approach to anti-ageing, the first step is to reverse the cellular energy loss by recharging the skin with the vital energy essential for its optimal functioning. The next phase renews skin cells by reawakening stem cells, while the third stage begins the rebuilding of the skin’s structure. Apply twice daily for 28 to 40 days, to coincide with the skin’s natural renewal cycle, then repeat every three months.

Bulgari Secret De Gemmes Line The Cosmetic Research Department of Bulgari has created a new programme to immediately and continuously combat expression lines. The exclusive line comprising three high-performing targeted products – Secret De Gemmes Serum, Secret De Gemmes Cream and Secret De Gemmes Cream Rich – contains two unique ingredients: relaxstim and hexapeptide. Relaxstim is a super-efficient anti-wrinkle ingredient, which dramatically reduces the appearance of expression lines. Hexapeptide is a hyaluronic acid matrix, which contains extra moisturising ingredients that help to keep skin hydrated at all times.

Australian brand, ATP, known for its technological advancements in antiageing and skin solutions, has created ATP Skin Firming Serum. Designed specifically to maintain elasticity and flexibility for firmer, plumper skin, this product is often referred to as the ‘nonsurgical facelift’ serum.

UNE Radiance Programme The UNE Radiance Programme includes Micellar Cleansing Water, Moisturising Cream and Nourishing Cream. Working in harmony, these three products are designed to give a quick (yet longlasting) boost to the complexion, while helping to keep skin naturally smooth, plump and clear.

Strivectin-TL Tightening Face Serum and Tightening and Sculpting Face & Neck Cream With ageing comes loss of skin firmness. Little by little, slackness creeps in making once-toned skin appear loose. StriVectin’s exclusive technology works from within, first tightening the surface, then fortifying the skin’s ability to hold natural collagen. The effects are both immediate and long term.

Guerlain Abeille Royale Eye Care Kiss crows’ feet goodbye with Guerlain’s Abeille Royale Eye Care. Acting on three levels, this new beauty broth helps to do away with wrinkles and dark circles around the eyes by reweaving the skin’s mesh. The first stage sees the acceleration of tissue cells to damaged areas, which helps to smooth and tighten the skin around the eyes. The second phase improves tissue suppleness, while the third stage reduces puffiness, leaving you bright eyed.

Catch of the day With Abu Dhabi’s location on the coast, who could resist a deliciously fresh seafood meal in one of the city’s finest restaurants?

Nautilus Enjoy unrivalled views of berthed luxury yachts, Yas Marina and the Yas Yacht Club whether dining on the terrace at Nautilus or inside. While the January weather makes alfresco dining the ideal option, those who choose to sit inside can still admire the views through the floor-toceiling glass along the marina-facing side of the restaurant. It’s not just the view from the restaurant of this ultramodern hotel that is the winner. Under the guidance of new executive chef Michel Jost, who has worked in restaurants at luxury hotels in Switzerland, Spain, South Africa and Greece, Nautilus has seen a few changes. Chef Michel and UK-trained chef de cuisine Satish, who is originally from Mumbai, have fine tuned and extended the menu offering a greater selection of Champagne, including an indulgent 22-carat Champagne rosé. The raw bar, meanwhile, is equally indulgent with two types of French farm oysters and three types of premium caviar. The selection of appetisers has increased and the warm dishes have been divided into two styles: Mediterranean and pan-Pacific. Recommended starters include crab cocktail or signature scallop, while the grilled surf and turf gets the tick of approval. Also getting the thumbs up is new restaurant manager Xavier Lignac who brings Michelin-star experience to the restaurant and places great emphasis on staff knowing the menu inside out. With delicious fresh seafood, beautiful marina views and friendly, efficient service, an evening at Nautilus is bound to be special. Where: Yas Viceroy / When: 7 to 11pm / Contact: 02 6560600

Finz Perched over the water in a wooden hut, this romantic seafood restaurant has a boardwalk terrace that’s perfect for outdoor dining. Whether taking in the views of the glistening Gulf waters or observing the growing Abu Dhabi skyline, by day or night Finz is one of Abu Dhabi’s favourite restaurants. The menu features all manner of seafood dishes, but perhaps one of the most recommended is the salt-crusted sea bass for two, which comes with lobster and tarragon sauce, seasonal vegetables, baby potatoes and rice. The mixed seafood grill platter is also popular. The seafood is sourced from all over the world. The sea bass and salmon are from Norway, the Dover sole from European waters, the sako tuna comes from the Philippines, the oysters are from France and the catch of the day is from the local fish market. The wine list is extensive, while the service is friendly and attentive. There are few better ways to enjoy a seafood meal than overlooking the water, with a gentle breeze of mild sea air. Pearls & Caviar A firm favourite on Abu Dhabi’s dining scene, Pearls & Caviar never fails to impress. The venue’s exclusivity and luxurious surroundings are evident from the name alone, but it’s a theme that carries throughout the restaurant. Overlooking the water and the stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Mediterranean seafood restaurant exudes class. It is coloured in pewter tones with Arabic touches. There’s an intricate mosaic tile pattern on the floor, white tablecloths and comfortable leather chairs. Guest chef Jean Paul Lourdes, from the ShangriLa Hotel, Toronto, has designed a special menu that shows flair and creativity, while incorporating some local delights. For a starter, try the scallops roasted with coffee and cardamom with salted milk curd and medjool dates, or the puree of pattypan squash, sautéed Gulf shrimp, bitter orange and pomegranate. For mains, it’s hard to beat the Chilean sea bass, garlic ravioli, sour grapefruit essence, beef marrow and juice of young tarragon. Pearls of the plate One of the finest delicacies in the world, sturgeon caviar will soon be produced in Abu Dhabi

Ph

PHOTOLIBRARY

Lovers of fine food will soon be able to feast on caviar produced in Abu Dhabi. The Royal Caviar Company opened in the capital in 2011 and its first commercial batch of caviar is expected to be produced later this year. It will become the world’s largest and most technologically advanced producer of high-quality caviar, supplying up to 35 tonnes annually from homegrown sturgeon. Fetching US$4 to US$6 (AED15 to AED22) per gram, there is a growing demand for quality caviar, particularly in the Middle East and Asia. In fact, 14 tonnes of caviar is consumed annually just in the UAE. In the wild, sturgeon is considered endangered which is why the farmed variety is becoming increasingly popular as an environmentally friendly delicacy. Robert Harper, group commercial director of Bin Salem Holding, the Abu Dhabi-based family-owned holding group behind The Royal Caviar Company, says Abu Dhabi’s location makes it ideal for distribution to the world’s growing markets for high-quality caviar and sturgeon fillets. He says the Ossetra caviar will be produced through state-of-the-art methods. “Cutting edge recirculating technology and digital process control ensures that the sturgeon enjoy an ideal habitat with carefully controlled pH levels, oxygen concentration and regular feeding. Our sturgeon will produce an extremely high quality of caviar and fillets for the local and international markets for many years to come.” Ossetra caviar comes from the Ossetra variety of sturgeon. It is smaller than its prized cousin Beluga and produces a distinct flavour which is considered richer and more nutty. A versatile delicacy, caviar can be enjoyed as a canapé or as a complement to main dishes, according to Harper. “Care should be taken to serve the caviar when very fresh and slightly cooler than room temperature. When served as a canapé, let the caviar be the centre of attention and try not to overpower its delicate and distinctive taste by combining it with strongf lavoured foods.” While the locally produced caviar is not yet available, visitors can enjoy other caviar in high-end establishments, such as Le Café & Caviar Bar (Emirates Palace 02 6909000), Pearls & Caviar (Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri 02 5098555) and Nautilus (Yas Viceroy 02 6560600).

W h at ’s yo u r f l av o u r ? Only roe from the sturgeon fish can be classed as caviar. Beluga Considered the most prized caviar for its soft, pea-sized eggs and delicate flavour. Its colour

ranges from pale silver-grey to black and is the most expensive variety.

Ossetra Medium-sized eggs, ranging in colour from grey to brown with a distinct flavour. Sevruga Smaller eggs that are grey in colour with a more pronounced flavour.

This tourist site on the Breakwater is a re-creation of aspects of Bedouin life and has a museum containing original artefacts.

Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island will soon be home to the world-famous Louvre and Guggenheim museums. The Abu Dhabi government is spending over US$1 billion to bring these cultural landmarks to the emirate. They have also signed some of the world’s most renowned architects, including Frank Gehry who shot to fame with his design of the Guggenheim Bilbao in Spain, and Jean Nouvel, who designed the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. In addition, the Zayed National Museum will be designed by Lord Norman Foster, making the Cultural District the only place in the world to have buildings designed by five Pritzker Prize winners. The Louvre Abu Dhabi is set to open in 2013, while the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open some time later.

SHOPPING ETIQUETTE Women should make sure that shoulders and the top half of legs are covered in Abu Dhabi’s malls and souks. Keep in mind that the UAE is a Muslim country and respect its culture. Take care not to wear anything too revealing or suggestive. Comfortable, light clothing is recommended, but it’s wise to carry a wrap or jumper in shopping malls as the air conditioning can be chilly. Refrain from public displays of affection.

JUMEIRAH AT ETIHAD TOWERS

Smoking shisha (hubbly bubbly) is very popular in Abu Dhabi. The Middle Eastern water pipe, which is thought to have originated around 500 years ago, purifies and cools the smoke from flavoured tobacco heated on top of the pipe by coals. It costs approximately AED35 to AED50 to smoke and the most popular flavours are apple, mint, strawberry, apricot and grape. Although relaxing and sociable, estimates suggest that an hour of shisha smoking equates to inhaling as many as 50 cigarettes. If you’re after an authentic taste of Middle Eastern culture, however, smoking shisha is a must. Just remember not to inhale too deeply, blow down the pipe to get rid of smoke build-up in the water and share your shisha among friends. This is a social tradition and to be enjoyed in groups or couples.
