First of all, let me start by wishing you a happy 2012. The promise of a New Year brings with it vigour, enthusiasm and the opportunity to pursue fresh goals, and for Abu Dhabi it is no different. Over the coming 12 months, we will see the destination mature further to give visitors a much more diversified and in-depth emirate-wide offering, which we hope will attract many new guests and keep old friends coming back. True to our word, we have started this year at full sail, plotting a course for a record 2012. For those of you that have taken a stroll down the city’s sweeping Corniche, you may very well have encountered our newest sporting endeavour, the Volvo Ocean Race. Abu Dhabi has made history by becoming both the first Arabian destination to enter a team in the race and to be a stopover hosting the fleet of this ‘Everest of Sailing’. On the Corniche, you will find a purpose-built ‘Destination Village’ – the size of eight football pitches – which is hosting the six competing yachts, including our very own Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, the world’s best sailors and a wealth of free activities, entertainment, concerts, rides, sailing schools and so much more. The Destination Village celebrations will run daily until January 14, so there is plenty of time to see all the action. Just 12 days after the Volvo Ocean Race leaves town we’ll be welcoming the world’s golfing giants to Abu Dhabi Golf Club for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. This promises to be a tough battle with Martin Kaymer out to defend his title; Paul Casey looking to lift the Falcon trophy for the third time; three reigning Major holders, and the Abu Dhabi debut of the legendary Tiger Woods. It’s a golfer’s dream field. We in Abu Dhabi are pretty buoyant about the year ahead – it’s started well for us. The emirate has been named ‘The Middle East’s Safest City’ in the Mercer Consulting Quality of Living Report. The International Association of Golf Tour Operators has named Abu Dhabi ‘Golf Destination Of The Year Middle East & Africa’ while the USA’s prestigious Travel + Leisure magazine has ranked the emirate among its Top 12 ‘Hottest Destinations of 2012.’ These are great credentials on which to build and on I hope your experience bears out this fulsome praise. Souk at Qaryat Al Beri Themed on a traditional Arabian market, the Souk at Qaryat Al Beri has a variety of shops selling everything from Arabic perfumes and carpets to dates and chocolate. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the most awe-inspiring landmarks not only in Abu Dhabi, but the entire UAE. Its external beauty, attention to detail and humbling intensity of its religious blueprint will amaze people from all walks of life. I believe the best way to know about the uniqueness of a country and its people is by learning how it all began. Heritage Village beautifully captures the history of this nation and its forefathers and is located on the Breakwater close to Marina Mall. My favourite ride is Formula Rossa, the fastest rollercoaster in the world. This is a perfect attraction for a day with the family. Abu Dhabi is a city of islands and has plenty of mangroves. This makes it perfect for leisurely guided tours around the coastal waters and inland areas. ANCIENT VESSELS IN MODERN TIMES Dhow racing showcases traditional craftsmanship and keeps UAE history alive

The graceful Arabian dhow is a cultural symbol of the UAE, its billowing sails reflected in the design of the iconic Burj Al Arab, one of the early landmarks of neighbouring Dubai’s success. This traditional wooden sailing boat, whose name derives from the Persian word ‘dawh’ meaning sailing vessel, was originally used for transportation, pearl diving and trading. Today, these majestic vessels can be seen under full sail on the horizon each winter, racing over the waves of the Arabian Gulf. The boats are crewed mainly by teams of young UAE nationals under stiff competition, with big prize money at stake. Traditional sailing skills, passed from generation to generation, are still in use in these races, as sailors hoist the boom carrying the sail by hand, using traditional block and tackle, and navigate by the methods of their forefathers. The huge white triangular sails, called lateens, distinguish the dhow from other sailboats. When the boats are under way, the massive sails can be seen from a great distance, making dhow racing an easy sport to watch from shore.

Building on tradition Frédéric Dignef of Outsider Sails has been making sails for dhow racing for five years. This is an area where tradition gives way to technology in favour of speed. “The sails for dhows are different because the dhows don’t have to sail upwind. The races are always downwind or beam reaching so we make the sails more deep and powerful,” he says. “The sails were made traditionally on the beach with no stitching machine, no computer and cheap cloth. When [companies] started sponsoring races, prize money became an important factor for owners so the quest for a better sail became vital for winning.” The curved boats were originally made from teak and teak is still the rule, although today’s boat-builders sometimes incorporate fibreglass and steel into the framework for strength and maneuverability. The teak may be varnished, but paint is not permitted. Sails must be white and boats can cost up to AED500,000 (US$136,000) to build.

Visitors can see dhows being crafted the traditional way at heritage sites in the UAE. At the Al Bateen boatyard in Abu Dhabi, craftsmen use the original hand tools and the ancient knowledge and skill passed down through the generations to produce the UAE’s best racing dhows without drawings, but to the exact specifications the sport dictates. According to Saeed Hareb, president of the UAE Marine Sports Federation and managing director of the Dubai International Marine Club, dhows constitute the biggest fleet of traditional boats in the world. In an interview with Valencia Sailing, he talked about the importance of preserving the dhow-sailing tradition in the UAE for young nationals. “Sailing is in their blood,” he said. “Their fathers and their grandfathers were all sailors because they lived by the sea and it was the only means of transportation and trading. In addition, a lot of them were fishermen so they have known the dhows all their lives. Yet, life and society are evolving and as a result we don’t want them to turn their back to the sea.”

And since all the boats on the start line are the same, the competition is fair and winning comes down to skill, experience, strategy and strength. The sails are not hoisted until the race begins and participants must do this with skill and speed in order to get going quickly. There are three classes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; according to the length of the competing dhows â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 22ft, 43ft and 60ft. During the Louis Vuitton Trophy held in Dubai during November 2010, the international crews were given the opportunity to race in traditional dhows. They were impressed by the lack of sophisticated instruments and with the sailors judging speed by the wind on their faces. Before the race they commented on the small size of the rudder and speculated about the possibilities for capsizing. But they were all smiles after the race, which was won by the Franco-German alliance All4One. The racing season runs from September to May. The final and most prestigious race of the season is from Sir Bu Nuair Island, off the coast of Abu Dhabi, to Dubai, about 100 nautical kilometres, following the historic journey of pearl divers after months of being away from home. The race offers prize money of AED10 million (US$2.7 million) and attracts around 100 teams.

Sir Bani Yas Island A short seaplane flight, or two-and-a-halfhour drive from Abu Dhabi city, lies Sir Bani Yas Island, home to the Arabian Wildlife Park. The park was created by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the country’s first president, as part of his vision to ‘green the desert’. He wanted to make the desert more suitable for human settlement and provide a haven for endangered wildlife. As a result, several million trees were planted and many animal species were introduced to the island for breeding. Among them were gazelles, oryx and ostriches. Under this programme, the beautiful Arabian oryx (pictured previous page) has been rescued from the brink of extinction. Futaisi Island Ride a purebred Arabian horse or a camel around the island or join a mini-bus tour and discover an abundance of wildlife. The activities are varied on Futaisi Island, just a short boat ride from Abu Dhabi city. Alternatively, take a bicycle and complete the tour in your own time. Commonly seen creatures include gazelles that are endemic to the island, endangered sea eagles, dhub lizards and osprey. Futaisi is a transit point for migrating birds and visitors will often spot flamingoes on the shores. Dalma Island Discover a more traditional side of Abu Dhabi life on Dalma Island, one of the oldest inhabited settlements in the UAE, dating back 7,500 years. The island was a hub for the pearl diving industry and was referred to as Pearl Island on old maps, yet with more than 200 freshwater wells, it also served as a watering hole for passing ships. While the local pearl industry suffered greatly with the creation of the cultured pearl, fishing is still a mainstay of the local economy and visitors can watch traditional dhows as they bring in the day’s haul. History is very important on Dalma Island. It has some of the best preserved buildings from the early 20 th century. In other areas of the country, mosques and houses from that period were rebuilt, however on Dalma Island they have been preserved, making it a haven for history buffs. Those interested in learning about the history of the region’s pearling trade can call into the Dalma Island Pearl Museum. Dalma is part of the Desert Islands cluster. Cruising the Corniche Watch the sun set while strolling along Abu Dhabi’s beachfront or cool off in the warm, inviting waters of the Arabian Gulf

Abu Dhabi’s beautiful Corniche stretches more than seven kilometres with sandy white beaches, playgrounds and parks, cafés and restaurants, walking and cycling paths and even a beginners’ wakeboard park. It is undoubtedly one of the city’s greatest assets and is popular with both residents and visitors. One of the best ways to enjoy the Corniche is by foot, however visitors can hire bikes or buggies and make use of the bike path that runs the full length and provides a safe and leisurely alternative to riding on the road. It’s also a fun and efficient way to get from one end to the other. Bikes can be hired from four stations along the Corniche for AED30 per hour for adults and AED20 for children, while buggies cost AED20 for 30 minutes. For those who prefer to walk, there are numerous benches, cafés and shops along the path that provide a break in the stroll.

Along the beachfront, visitors can stop at the public beach is two kilometres long and begins at the southern end of the Corniche. The beach has swimming areas, gardens, pathways, beach volleyball courts, play areas, amenities and cafés. At least 170 umbrellas are dotted along this stretch of the beach to provide shade, while sunloungers allow visitors to enjoy the beautiful beach in comfort. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards and a floating fence prevents swimmers from heading too far out to sea. The beach is open from 7.30am to midnight and entry costs AED5 per family. Another beach further along, which is open from 7am to 10pm, offers entry

for AED10 per person with sunlounger hire for AED25. Towards the middle of the Corniche is a permanent beginners’ wakeboard park which is open from noon to 6pm and is free to use. Experts are on hand to offer tips and advice on how to improve technique. For light snacks and refreshments there is a collection of cafés and kiosks along the boardwalk overlooking the sea. There are also shops selling beachgoing essentials, such as flip flops, hats and suncream. So whether it’s a day spent topping up a tan on the sandy white beach, or a leisurely afternoon bike ride as the sun sets, the Corniche is a quintessential Abu Dhabi experience.

In generations gone by, Abu Dhabi’s people made a living from the sea. They fished it for food and income, and pulled shiny pearls from its depths. Their traditional wooden dhows crossed its length swapping goods from neighbouring countries. While pearling and fishing may have been replaced by oil as the country’s main source of income, Abu Dhabi’s affinity with the sea continues. The emirate has more than 200 islands – some inhabited, some merely desert – and while there are now luxury yachts cruising the Gulf, dhows are still plentiful. With this rich maritime history and traditions that still run deep, it seems a natural choice for Abu Dhabi to be included in the Volvo Ocean Race, a 39,000-nautical mile yacht race for hardcore sailors.

Meet the teams

Everest of sailing The Volvo Ocean Race started in the Spanish port of Alicante on October 29. Six teams left for Cape Town, South Africa, on November 5, however three (including Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing) retired from the first leg due to damage. On December 11, the teams set sail for Abu Dhabi and were expected to arrive amid much fanfare on New Year’s Day. Among the teams are hometown heroes Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, skippered by seasoned sailor Ian Walker, a double Olympic medallist who has previously competed in the Volvo Ocean Race as well as the America’s Cup. He will be drawing on this extensive experience during the nine-month journey. “The Volvo Ocean Race is mentally and physically exhausting. The whole project is quite daunting but it is easier to comprehend having done the race before,” says Walker, one of the world’s leading helmsmen and tacticians. The race has been dubbed the ‘Everest of sailing’ and it’s easy to see why. It passes through four of the world’s most treacherous oceans and seven continents, racing day and night for 20 days at a time between ports.

Each team has 11 professional crew and each person has been tasked with a different job in addition to sailing duties. There are two medically trained sailors on board along with an engineer, sailmaker and non-sailing media person. This is extreme racing. Crews have to make do with freeze-dried food as no fresh produce is taken on board. They contend with temperatures ranging from -5 to +40 degrees Celsius, yet take just one change of clothes. Hunger and sleep deprivation are common.

Azzam Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing’s yacht is called Azzam, which is an Arabic word meaning determined. The stateof-the-art vessel weighs about 14,000 kilograms and is the height of a 12-storey building from the base of the keel to the top of the mast. She is almost as long as two London doubledecker buses.

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing is the most intercontinental team ever assembled for the Volvo Ocean Race, representing seven nationalities and five continents. Among them are Emirati sailors Adil Khalid, the UAE’s first sailing Olympian, and reserve Butti Ahmed Al Muhairi, who comes from a long line of dhow sailors. The duo, who are competing in the Volvo Ocean Race for the first time, beat 120 Emirati hopefuls for a place in the team. The remaining five teams in this year’s race include current race leader Team Telefonica, skippered by dual Olympic medallist Iker Martinez; Camper with Emirates Team New Zealand in their first Volvo Ocean Race campaign; Groupama sailing team, skippered by French offshore legend Franck Cammas; Puma Ocean Racing, returning for a second year under the leadership of Ken Read; and Chinese debutants Team Sanya, led by Volvo Ocean Race veteran and two-time winner Mike Sanderson.

Destination celebration Open during the first two weeks of January, Destination Village is a specially designed 55,000-squaremetre focal point for Abu Dhabi’s leg of the race. The size of eight football pitches, it has been built opposite the Abu Dhabi Corniche to host the yachting fleet and many thousands of fans. With free entry, Destination Village will have a fully packed entertainment programme with exhibitions, shows, simulators, hospitality, game zones, restaurants and cafés, sailing academies, shops and concerts. Among the highlights will be The Ride, a stateof-the-art simulator that emulates the feeling of being on board a Volvo Open 70 yacht at speed in extreme conditions while being bombarded by strong winds and spray. The Dome is a 40-seat interactive 3D cinema, while the Grinding Challenge allows visitors to pit their strength against friends on the same pedestal grinders used by crews on board. Destination Village opened with a bang to a huge fireworks performance and popular British rock band Coldplay entertaining a crowd of thousands on New Year’s Eve. In-port racing will take place throughout the first two weeks of January giving residents and visitors a chance to see the yachts and teams in action. Charter a yacht

In Abu Dhabi, visitors can charter everything from a small motor yacht for just a few people to a 280-foot luxury vessel for up to 150 people, with 18 cabins and all the mod-cons one would expect, such as Jacuzzis, plunge pools, formal dining areas, bars and a fitness centre. Of course, there’s everything in between so all that needs to be determined is your itinerary, the number of guests, whether catering is needed and whether to include optional extras such as jetskis or snorkelling and diving equipment. The UAE is home to some of the most luxurious yachts in the world. Q Just a few months ago, Abu Dhabi was named 2012’s golf destination of the year in Africa and the Gulf States by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators. Just a few days earlier, it was announced that Tiger Woods would play for the first time in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. But Abu Dhabi is not new to the world of golf. It has been staging the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, the start of the European PGA Tour, since 2006 and has attracted a field of the world’s top golfers each year. Martin Kaymer has won the Falcon Trophy three times and will be looking to add a fourth to his CV, but he has to contend with a star-studded field including three reigning Major winners and past and present world number ones. I’m a relative newcomer to Abu Dhabi. I arrived eight months ago from Dubai where I had lived for two and a half years. I initially moved there for work, intending to stay just six months. The recession was starting in the UK and work was drying up. A friend suggested I fly to Dubai and arrange some job interviews. Fortunately it worked out and I am still in the UAE three years later. I didn’t really know too much about Abu Dhabi before I moved here. Living in Dubai, I had travelled to the capital for two years but hadn’t explored too much. I now live in Khalifa ‘A’ and really like it. I’m a stone’s throw from Yas Marina, which is where I watched the Formula One Grand Prix in November. My two older brothers were here during that week so we attended the race and went to the concerts. Sir Paul

McCartney performed on the final night after the race and was brilliant. While my brothers were here we also did a desert safari, which I had never experienced despite living in the region for three years. It really surprised me how much fun it was. We also went to Al Forsan International Sports Resort, near where I live in Khalifa ‘A’. It’s a great place which has loads of things to do, such as go-karting, buggies, wakeboarding and paintball. You’re guaranteed a good time. In my spare time, I enjoy going for a round at one of Abu Dhabi’s golf courses. The main three are Abu Dhabi Golf Club, which will host the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship this month, Yas Links and Saadiyat Beach Golf Club. Yas and Saadiyat have great views of the Arabian Gulf.

Q Omega Seamaster Ploprof 1200M In 1970, Omega launched the Seamaster Professional 600, one of the most robust and seaworthy divers’ wristwatches ever manufactured. Affectionately called the ‘Ploprof’, (the first letters of plongeur professionnel, French for ‘professional diver’), the watch has been updated and relaunched. Water resistant to 1,200 metres, the Ploprof not only has a bi-directional locking bezel, but also comes with a brushed mesh, shark-proof bracelet. The watch is equipped with a co-axial calibre 8,500. Its case cannot be mistaken for that of any other watch with the screwed-in crown, located at 9 o’clock, positioned under a protective buffer allowing freer wrist movement and preventing any unintentional manipulation. Q There is something wonderfully romantic about pearls, their creamy hue and shiny lustre is seductive. And nowhere more so than in Abu Dhabi, an emirate with a rich pearling history and thriving jewellery trade. Head to any of the shopping centres and see stores brimming with bright, gleaming pearls. But before delving into your pocket and purchasing that must-have piece, there are a few important points worth considering. “To be deemed perfect, a pearl should have extremely high lustre, excellent surface texture and it should be free of blemishes,” says Sahil Karani, director at Mikura Pearls. “It should also have a faultlessly round shape.”

Coloured kaleidoscope There is no international standard for grading pearls so different suppliers may not grade identical examples in the same way. Many reputable sellers, however, use the A, AA and AAA grading system with AAA being the most sought after. As well as lustre and shape, examine the surface of the pearl. It should be free of cracks and holes. Also consider the nacre, the thickness of its exterior. If a pearl has been harvested too early, its nacre may crack and flake. Look at drill holes with a magnifying glass where signs of damage are most likely to be found. The nacre should be at least 0.3mm deep or better, 0.5mm. With pink, black, blue, green and grey pearls available, which is the most popular and why?

“South Sea pearls come in varying colours from silvery white to blue grey and there are the brownish black pearls of Tahiti,” says Celina Pandey, marketing manager at Khalil Al Sayegh Jewellers. “Colour is purely a matter of personal choice.” According to Karani, it is still the traditional white pearl that tends to be more expensive. “This is because the overwhelming majority of demand is for white pearls,” he says. “White is the colour most typically associated with pearls from the discovery of the first natural pearls through to the culturing of Akoya, South Sea and Freshwater pearls. “Today, even though pearls are available in a variety of colours and hues, white remains the most sought after, especially in the larger South Sea pearls. “The rarity of finding a truly high-quality white South Sea pearl, however, makes it highly valuable and prized.”

Perfect pearls

Another UAE retailer with pearl expertise is Damas. As well as creating its own collections, Damas distributes luxury pieces from high-end brand Mikimoto, whose founder is credited with culturing the world’s first perfectly round pearl in 1893. Paspaley, another leading pearling company, recently made headlines for bringing the world’s largest pearl to Dubai. The precious South Sea gem was transported all the way from Australia for an exhibition at Atlantis The Palm, Dubai. Measuring a whopping 22mm in diameter, this priceless jewel of the sea is perfectly shaped and has a strong pink orient. Jewellers today sell cultured pearls, which are created when the oyster’s shell has been opened to insert an irritant, stimulating nacre production. This process, which was developed in the 1920s, destroyed the world’s pearl diving trade, which for decades was the emirate’s greatest source of revenue and accounted for as much as 95 percent of national incomes. Divers would risk life and limb collecting oysters. Holding their breaths for minutes at a time they would scour the seabed in search of the precious gems.

Finz Perched over the water in a wooden hut, this romantic seafood restaurant has a boardwalk terrace that’s perfect for outdoor dining. Sayad Taking its name from the Arabic word for fisherman, Sayad at Emirates Palace is a modern seafood restaurant with an aquatic feel. The turquoise lighting and clever use of glass give the restaurant an aquarium-like ambience, which sits perfectly with its menu of ocean delights. The seafood at this fine-dining restaurant is prepared using mostly European cooking principles, while modern techniques are employed at times to improve the taste or texture of the food. Highlights include the octopus carpaccio served with pickled peach, potato confit and a peach and tamarind dressing, or the sweet corn veloute, which is sweet corn soup served with king crab and curried popcorn. The seafood is sourced from Australia and Europe, particularly France and Norway. Situated on the ground level of the hotel, the restaurant offers views of the beach and marina. There is a terrace for alfresco dining and three private dining rooms, each accommodating up to eight diners.

Fishmarket In a hut overlooking the beach and the Arabian Gulf, sits Fishmarket, a restaurant where diners choose their ingredients and have the chefs prepare it the way they like. In the seafood section, guests can select from fat juicy scallops, Omani lobster, oysters and mussels, squid, shrimp and tiger prawns and an array of crabs sourced from around the world. Each can be grilled or fried and served with sauces, such as lemon and garlic, or sweet chili. In the fish section, the choice is extensive. There is sea bass, red hammour, sultan ibrahim, tuna, salmon, shark and more. Diners can then choose vegetables, salad, noodles and rice and decide how they would like the meal cooked. Staff are on hand to help with selections and also advise on the best sauces. Once diners have ordered, they can enjoy views of the Gulf through the large windows, watch the chefs in action or admire the aquariums around the restaurant. Fishmarket is ideal for those who like the freedom to choose how their meal is prepared. Nahaam A newcomer to Abu Dhabi’s restaurant scene, Nahaam offers beach views with alfresco and indoor casual dining. It is named after the singer employed on pearl diving ships who would keep spirits high through soulful traditional songs and joyful chants. In keeping with the ‘comforting’ theme, Nahaam serves international favourites such as wood-oven pizzas, Asian stir-fries, salads, steaks and fish dishes. Loughlin Druhan, executive chef at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, recommends the signature dish, black pepper-coated tuna with watermelon and tomato consommé. “Through its cuisine offerings, Nahaam’s goal is to make visitors feel gastronomically at home. There are 13 chefs of various nationalities and culinary backgrounds including European, Asian and Far Eastern and each has specialised in their regional disciplines, ensuring authenticity in flavours,” explains chef Loughlin. Pearls of the plate One of the finest delicacies in the world, sturgeon caviar will soon be produced in Abu Dhabi

Lovers of fine food will soon be able to feast on caviar produced in Abu Dhabi. The Royal Caviar Company opened in the capital in 2011 and its first commercial batch of caviar is expected to be produced later this year. It will become the world’s largest and most technologically advanced producer of high-quality caviar, supplying up to 35 tonnes annually from homegrown sturgeon. Fetching US$4 to US$6 (AED15 to AED22) per gram, there is a growing demand for quality caviar, particularly in the Middle East and Asia. In fact, 14 tonnes of caviar is consumed annually just in the UAE. In the wild, sturgeon is considered endangered which is why the farmed variety is becoming increasingly popular as an environmentally friendly delicacy. Robert Harper, group commercial director of Bin Salem Holding, the Abu Dhabi-based family-owned holding group behind The Royal Caviar Company, says Abu Dhabi’s location makes it ideal for distribution to the world’s growing markets for high-quality caviar and sturgeon fillets. He says the Ossetra caviar will be produced through state-of-the-art methods. “Cutting edge recirculating technology and digital process control ensures that the sturgeon enjoy an ideal habitat with carefully controlled pH levels, oxygen concentration and regular feeding. Our sturgeon will produce an extremely high quality of caviar and fillets for the local and international markets for many years to come.” Ossetra caviar comes from the Ossetra variety of sturgeon. It is smaller than its prized cousin Beluga and produces a distinct flavour which is considered richer and more nutty. A versatile delicacy, caviar can be enjoyed as a canapé or as a complement to main dishes, according to Harper. “Care should be taken to serve the caviar when very fresh and slightly cooler than room temperature. When served as a canapé, let the caviar be the centre of attention and try not to overpower its delicate and distinctive taste by combining it with strongf lavoured foods.” While the locally produced caviar is not yet available, visitors can enjoy other caviar in high-end establishments, such as Le Café & Caviar Bar (Emirates Palace 02 6909000), Pearls & Caviar (Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri 02 5098555) and Nautilus (Yas Viceroy 02 6560600).

Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island will soon be home to the world-famous Louvre and Guggenheim museums. The Abu Dhabi government is spending over US$1 billion to bring these cultural landmarks to the emirate. They have also signed some of the world’s most renowned architects, including Frank Gehry who shot to fame with his design of the Guggenheim Bilbao in Spain, and Jean Nouvel, who designed the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. In addition, the Zayed National Museum will be designed by Lord Norman Foster, making the Cultural District the only place in the world to have buildings designed by five Pritzker Prize winners. The Louvre Abu Dhabi is set to open in 2013, while the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open some time later.
