welcome A very special welcome to all our new and returning Abu Dhabi visitors as we prepare to host the emirate’s flagship sporting event for the third year, the 2011 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The whole city is alive with race-associated activities for you to enjoy. Whether you are here for the Grand Prix, or just visiting for business or relaxation, we are confident that you will find all you are looking for… and more. You’ll find all the details of our city-wide activations within this magazine. Yet, it doesn’t stop there. Much has changed across the entire emirate over the last 12 months. For instance, Abu Dhabi’s Corniche beach has been awarded ‘Blue Flag’ status, one of the highest accolades in beachfront protection. We are the first in the Arabian Gulf to receive the award. Our beautiful oasis city of Al Ain, an hour’s drive from Abu Dhabi city, has been added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List, thanks to its distinguished cultural, geological, archaeological and historic sites. Tour operators offer trips to this city, which is our heritage heartland. For those hoping to come back to Abu Dhabi, we also have an action-packed events calendar over the coming months. We will pull out all the stops for the UAE’s much anticipated 40 th National Day anniversary celebrations on December 2. For those with a love of sailing, Abu Dhabi will make history this New Year when it becomes the first Arab destination to host the gruelling round-the-world yacht race, the Volvo Ocean Race. The fortnight-long hosting of the race will be packed with activities and entertainment – all in a free-to-enter ‘Destination Village’ on the Corniche. So whatever your reason for visiting Abu Dhabi, please enjoy every moment of your trip and we look forward to welcoming you back again.

F1 dates back to 1946, yet it has continously evolved during this time. Scottish Formula One driver Jim Clark (pictured driving his Lotus racing car at the Monaco Grand Prix in May 1964) was one of the most successful drivers of his time. He won two championships (1963 and 1965), had 25 Grand Prix wins and 33 pole positions. He was tragically killed during a racing accident at the Hockenheimring in Germany on April 7, 1968

Friday brunch The Friday brunch is an institution in the UAE. Popular with the expat community, the brunch is more of an extended three- to four-hour lunch, rather than a meal enjoyed between breakfast and lunch. Available at most of the emirate’s hotels, brunch normally includes an extensive buffet with options for free-flowing alcoholic beverages, however some restaurants offer an à la carte menu. Where: Hotels throughout Abu Dhabi. When: Fridays between midday and 4pm. Price: Varies according to restaurant and package. Contact: See the Taste listings from page 102.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the most important places to visit in Abu Dhabi, however we emphasise that there is a strict dress code. Ladies must wear a long dress or trousers and have their arms covered. Irrespective of covering up with the abaya (which is given to women on arrival), those not wearing the appropriate dress will not be allowed to enter. There are complimentary tours of the mosque every day, however it is closed on Friday mornings for prayers. I also suggest visiting the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital because it is educational for both adults and children. The falcon is the national bird of the UAE, so it is interesting to learn how the birds are treated from birth until adulthood. Camel racing is a cultural experience and I recommend all visitors see it. It begins early in the morning and the race track is a short drive from Abu Dhabi. We suggest going by taxi, or organising a driver or limousine. When it comes to dining, Emirates Palace has a range of fine restaurants. Mezlai is the first Emirati restaurant in Abu Dhabi, so it is a great way to sample local food and culture. BBQ Al Qasr is a unique spot on the beach, giving visitors the chance to enjoy the outdoors with a refreshing sea breeze and views of the night sky. Outside of the hotel, visitors should try Cipriani at the Yas Yacht Club and then experience Allure, which is an upmarket nightclub. At the Monte-Carlo Beach Club visitors can walk straight onto the beach where the waves come up to meet you. The sand and water are so inviting and there is also a pool with cabanas. There are also some lovely restaurants and bars. Abu Dhabi Concierge Group With support from the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, representatives from the major hotels meet regularly and work to ensure that visitors receive the best possible service and access to information during their stay in the emirate.

Taste Shisha
Along with the distinctive smell of oudh, or Arabic perfume, one of the most noticeable scents lingering in the Abu Dhabi breeze is that of shisha. Tobacco, which comes in a variety of flavours from mint to apple, is smoked through a water pipe and is very much a part of UAE social life. Visitors have the opportunity to try this local tradition at Arabic restaurants and cafés throughout the city, including the Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri (pictured). Fuelling passion With over 200 vehicles from a sheikh’s personal collection, the Emirates National Auto Museum is a must for any car and motoring enthusiast
Q Most people at some point in their lives will have collected something, whether it’s stamps, coins, football cards or even fridge magnets. Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan collects cars. From factory-spec collector’s editions to custom-made vehicles, his private collection exceeds 200 prime pieces and includes not just cars, but also military vehicles, trucks and caravans in all shapes and sizes. He even has a jet in the collection. It’s something that has to be seen to be appreciated and fortunately for visitors to Abu Dhabi, this can be done most days of the week. Housed in a giant pyramid on the road to Liwa, the Emirates National Auto Museum is a must-see for car lovers and those who appreciate the quirkier side of life. While not yet sporting a full collection, the museum has been designed with a motoring theme in mind. Line markings, similar to those on roads, direct visitors past each of the exhibits, which are illuminated by miniature street lights. Roundabouts in the middle of the museum display cars, while an upper deck will accommodate even more unique vehicles.

Bigger is better One of the most amazing exhibits is a giant, red 1950s Dodge Power Wagon truck, which gained a Guinness World Record for being the largest vehicle on the planet. Inside this fully functional beast is a fourbedroom apartment, living area, kitchen and bathrooms, and parked underneath it to demonstrate its size are full-sized cars. It is said the 1950s Dodge Power Wagon is Sheikh Hamad’s all-time favourite vehicle because of the role it played in the early years of the oil boom in the emirate. Early oil prospectors used these sturdy work horses in the desert, but at the Emirates National Auto Museum you’ll also find the real thing as well as the super-scale model. When constructing the giant version – which is exactly 64 times the size of the original – Sheikh Hamad was only restricted by the size of the tyres he could find, which happen to be from an oil rig transporter. The wipers came from an ocean liner and the headlights are said to have cost AED5,900 (US$1,600) each. Although the truck has an engine, driver’s seat and a steering wheel, it can only move short distances. Speaking to British motoring icon Jeremy Clarkson for his 1990s television show Motorworld, Sheikh Hamad said the pieces for the vehicle were built in Abu Dhabi, but assembled in the desert as the roads were too narrow to safely accommodate the eight-metre-wide, 50-tonne monster.
Sheikh Hamad has been affectionately nicknamed the ‘Rainbow Sheikh’. He has seven S Class Mercedes representing the colours of the rainbow – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet

Sing me a rainbow
Unique and quirky
Sheikh Hamad has been affectionately nicknamed the ‘Rainbow Sheikh’, a moniker that makes perfect sense after entering the pyramid. Confirming the title, he has seven S Class Mercedes which are identical except for their differing shades representing the colours of the rainbow – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. The cars have colour-coded interiors too, from the leather seats and dashboard, to the carpet, rear vision mirror and dangling prayer beads. Some say the vehicles were commissioned for the sheikh’s wedding, while others say he had them made – one for each day of week. Also in the set is a collection of Minis, from the old open-air Moke to the more recent racing-striped models reminiscent of the film, The Italian Job. There are fancy sports cars, vintage Buicks, Rolls Royces – including one that reportedly cost AED2.9 million (US$4.6 million) – a huge number of MercedesBenz (more than any other make, in fact), a New York taxi, a California police car and a vintage fire truck. There’s even a glittery silver buggy that the sheikh custom made to replicate one built by Mercedes-Benz in 1986 to mark its 100-year anniversary. The original was a one-off and the German car manufacturer was unwilling to repeat the construction, so Sheikh Hamad had one built from a small plastic model. Another replica is that of the world’s first modern car, which was invented by Karl Benz in 1886.
Among the more customised exhibits is a caravan that looks like a globe. Inside the four-storey mobile home, which is exactly one-millionth the size of the world, there are nine bedrooms. In the car park, visitors will find another Guinness World Record recipient – an eightbedroom apartment on wheels, which is the same height as a four-storey building. Behind the pyramid is an L-1011 TriStar jet. There is a collection of military vehicles, four-wheel drives and a full-sized Kenworth truck which looks surprisingly small when placed near some of the larger pieces. Sadly, very few of the exhibits have explanatory information and visitors who
know little about cars will not know whether they are looking at a factory-standard model or a custom-made gem. But do not let this be a deterrent, the Emirates National Auto Museum is definitely worth a look, even if it is just to marvel at one man’s extraordinary passion for cars. The museum is approximately one hour’s drive from Abu Dhabi on the E65 road to Hameem. It is signposted from the road, but the huge pyramid is hard to miss. The museum is usually open from 9am until 6pm, but closes for lunch. It is best to call to confirm times before making the journey. Admission is AED50. Contact 02 6676999 or 050 8293952.

8am – Souk Qaryat Al Beri Begin your tour Between the Bridges. Sounding rather poetic, this high-class suburb is located between Maqtaa and Mussaffah bridges, perched on the mainland at the gateway to the island city. A perfect place to begin your journey of discovery, Souk Qaryat Al Beri is themed on a traditional Arabian market (souk). The shops here are more boutique than bargain, the restaurants more steak than shawarma, but the architecture and atmosphere manage to propel the visitor to a different time and place. Early morning is a good time to focus the mind here over coffee and reflect on the changes that have occurred in the last 40 years.

10am – Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque tour A short taxi ride from Souk Qaryat Al Beri is the most impressive and revered landmark in the city, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. One of the largest mosques in the world, this magnificent structure has 80 domes, more than 1,000 columns and is an essential Abu Dhabi experience. Unlike most mosques, tours are available daily for non-Muslims. Sheikh Zayed wanted to promote understanding and tolerance between cultures and these tours offer an insight into Islam as well as a fascinating view of an architectural wonder.
11.30am – Marina Mall From the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, catch a taxi along the length of Abu Dhabi island to the Corniche. Here you will find Marina Mall, located on the breakwater jutting out into the Arabian Sea. The retail mix is diverse, from high-end designer labels such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Versace to home furnishings. As good a place as any in the city to appreciate the cosmopolitan mix of its residents and visitors, indulge in some passive people watching over a light lunch at one of Marina Mall’s many cafés and restaurants while avoiding the midday sun.
1.30pm – Heritage Village Step out of the air-conditioned comfort straight into the past at Heritage Village. See what life was like for the Bedouin in a reconstruction of a desert camp. Learn about the ingenious falaj irrigation system and watch craftsmen at work on metal, pottery and cloth. After browsing the museum exhibits, buy handmade souvenirs and potent spices from the souk. Savour this heritage atmosphere, sandwiched between the global consumerism of Marina Mall and the regal luxury of the next stop on your itinerary.

3.30pm – Emirates Palace A gilded tribute to service standards and royal lifestyle, Emirates Palace is far more than a luxury five-star hotel. Just a short distance from Heritage Village, the contrast could not be more pronounced. To experience the iconic hotel’s modern standards of excellence coupled with famous Arabian hospitality that make Abu Dhabi unique, dining here is a must. High tea may be an English creation but here it is executed with aplomb and a twist . Choose either the traditional afternoon tea with sandwiches and scones or the Emirates Palace alternative that infuses the ritual with Arabic influences, such as date and zataar scones with pistachio clotted cream. The residence of choice for visiting dignitaries, celebrities and royalty, you too will be made to feel like a VIP.
7pm – Yas Island Past, present and future are all covered in your day of discovery. Head to Yas Island by taxi to see one of the many stunning developments shaping Abu Dhabi. Home to the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Yas is a luxury playground with top-end hotels, a world-class golf course, adrenaline-charged theme park and some of the best bars and restaurants in the city. Marvel at the marina’s superyachts and take a ride on the world’s fastest rollercoaster at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. The Yas Viceroy hotel has a fun, futuristic design that forms a natural final destination for your distilled day in the city. There is much more to see and do in the capital and the wider emirate, but that will have to wait for your next visit.
5.30pm – Corniche The Corniche, a coastal promenade, comes alive in the evenings with families taking a stroll or joggers fulfiling their post-work regime. As the heat of the day subsides, the buildings along the waterside walk reflect the colours of the sun as it begins to dip then swiftly drop into the sea. Abu Dhabi’s skyline is constantly being refreshed, with many landmark buildings along the Corniche nearing completion. Experiencing the city on foot also provides a full sensory immersion that you simply do not get by taxi. Apart from the sights, expect to smell the distinctive aroma of shisha and feel the warm breeze against your face.

Formula One came into existence in 1946 when the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) announced it as the premier single-seater racing category in world motorsport. The ‘formula’ refers to a set of rules and regulations to which all drivers and cars must comply and tries to ensure a driver’s safety while pushing the boundaries of the sport and creating a spectacle for audiences. It wasn’t until May 13, 1950, that the FIA organised the first official world championship for drivers using the Formula One rules. The championship was to be staged across six major circuits in Europe as well as the Indianapolis 500. Since then it has gone from strength to strength and become the richest sport in the world, with an increasing audience. It has taken more than 60 years to build F1 from a modest motor race to the billion-dollar business it is today.
The 1950s In the early Grands Prix of the 1950s, Italian teams Ferrari and Maserati were best positioned to win. French manufacturer Talbot and the UK’s BRM also competed along with a number of private cars, but it was Italy’s Alfa Romeo that dominated the 1950s season, winning all races apart from the Indianapolis 500. Italy’s Giuseppe Farina won the inaugural championship in an Alfa Romeo 158, with Argentina’s Juan Manuel Fangio taking the 1951 title in an Alfa Romeo 159. Both cars were built using only prewar materials and technology. Alfa Romeo withdrew at the end of the 1951 season after the Italian government refused to fund the development of a new car. With little competition from BRM or Talbot, Ferrari won the 1952 and 1953 seasons with Italy’s Alberto Ascari at the wheel. In 1954 Lancia and Mercedes-Benz joined, hiring Ascari and Fangio respectively. The decade’s racing scene belonged to Fangio, who won the title in ’51, ’54, ’55, ’56 and ’57 and is still known as the grand master of Formula One. Safety standards were low and the death toll of the decade was gruesome, resulting in the deaths of 15 drivers.

DIS C O VER /F1 HISTO R Y
The 1960s The 1960s were an era of British dominance, ushered in by Mike Hawthorn’s win in 1958. It was the time of Stirling Moss. Although he never won a world title, he is still considered one of the best British drivers of all time. The British Racing Green Lotus was the car of the moment and in 1968 the team drove the first cars to carry advertising. They arrived at Spain’s Circuito del Jarama in the red, gold and white colours of Imperial Tobacco’s Gold Leaf brand.
The 1970s The turning point for Formula One and the way it was managed came when Bernie Ecclestone purchased the Brabham team in 1971. With a seat on the Formula One Constructors Association (FOCA), he was soon making waves in the world of racing. In 1978 Ecclestone became president of the association and would be instrumental
2
in changing the face of F1 forever. Until then circuit owners negotiated with teams individually and even controlled their income. Shifting power to the association, Ecclestone masterminded ‘package deals’ in which circuit owners would have to surrender advertising track rights to have Formula One races meet at their track. Brazilian Emerson Fittipaldi became the youngest driver to win the championship at the age of 25 (this record has since gone to Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton and most recently Sebastian Vettel). Britain’s Jackie Stewart rose to challenge his title and together they dominated the Formula One scene for the entire first half of the decade. Technological changes included the introduction of the aluminium sheet monocoque chassis in place of the spaceframe design and the introduction of ground effect aerodynamics to increase cornering speeds.

“There is a formula for success and it is not difficult to analyse. It is made up of 50 percent car, 25 percent driver and 25 percent luck.” – Fangio

Brazil’s Ayrton Senna and Nelson Piquet, as well as France’s Alain Prost, dominated the 1980s with British teams Brabham, McLaren and Williams winning every title of the decade. By 1988, the focus was on the rivalry between Senna and Prost, which continued until Prost’s retirement in 1993. Yet theirs wasn’t the only infighting. With Ecclestone at the helm of the Formula One Constructors Association, war was waged against the Federation International du Sport Automobile (FISA) over television rights and technical regulations. FOCA boycotted the San Marino Grand Prix in 1982 and threatened to create a rival version of Formula One until FISA handed over the television rights to races in 1981, placing the jewel in the crown of Ecclestone’s empire. The development of electronic driver aids started during the 1980s. Lotus began to develop a system of active suspension, which first appeared in 1982. By 1987, this system had been perfected and was driven to victory by Senna in the Monaco Grand Prix that year.
Fa s t fa c t s - Fangio was once kidnapped by Fidel Castro’s July 26 Movement, but emerged unharmed after being well looked after - The earliest in a season that the driver’s championship has been clinched was in 2002, when Michael Schumacher secured the title with six races remaining - Once a Formula One car is travelling at 160kmh, it can generate enough downforce to equal its own weight, meaning it could hold itself to the ceiling of a tunnel and drive upside down - Most racing tyres are filled with nitrogen as it has a more consistent pressure than regular air

Juan Manuel Fangio Born in Argentina, 1911 Juan-Manuel Fangio began racing in local events from Argentina through the Andes of Peru and back again. The Argentinean government eventually sponsored him to race in Europe after the end of World War II. He raced for Maserati and then Mercedes, competing in 12 Grands Prix and winning eight times. He retired at the age of 47. 5

Ayrton Senna Born in Brazil, 1960 Ayrton Senna is considered one of the greatest drivers in F1 history. His debut race was the 1984 Brazilian Grand Prix in Rio de Janeiro and his first podium was second place at the Monaco Grand Prix in the same season. He claimed world championship titles in 1988, 1990 and 1991. Senna was killed in an accident in 1994 at the San Marino Grand Prix while driving for Williams Renault. Michael Schumacher Born in Germany, 1969 Statistically speaking, Michael Schumacher is the best racing driver of all time, with seven world championship titles and many driver records. He is the only driver in F1 history to have stood on the podium every race of a season (2002). He won the most races in a single season (13) in 2004 and holds records for the most race victories, fastest laps and points scored in a single season.

The 1990s The cost of the technological advances of the 1990s put an end to many teams’ participation in the sport. Since 1990, 28 teams have withdrawn from F1, leaving the ‘Big Four’ – McLaren, Williams, Renault (formerly Benneton) and Ferrari – to win every world championship from 1984 to 2008. The FIA frequently changed the rules to improve on-track action, with result-manipulating ‘team orders’ banned since 1992. After the deaths of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenburger in 1994, there was a crackdown on safety, resulting in slower cornering and other steps to focus on the driver’s skill. The results are controversial, with a decline in overtaking as a result, detracting from the excitement of the event, but no driver since Senna has died behind the wheel of an F1 vehicle.
2000 and beyond
8
It was in 2000 that Michael Schumacher started his record run of five consecutive world championship titles, all with Ferrari. After this landmark success, Schumacher retired in 2006, but has returned to the sport for the last two seasons. Since then, Finland’s Kimi Raikonnen, Britain’s Button and Hamilton and Germany’s Vettel have stolen the limelight and helped pave the way for a new generation of young drivers.

The world’s best drivers speed around Yas Marina Circuit which wraps around a stunning marina and through the five-star Yas Viceroy hotel. Afterwards there are concerts, parties and gala dinners Welcome to the weekend Abu Dhabi has hosted an F1 Grand Prix since 2009. It is the world’s first and only day/night race, starting in the afternoon and ending after sundown. It’s a spectacular time of day as the huge red Arabian sun sets behind the West Grandstand and Abu Dhabi skyline. As the day turns into night, powerful floodlights keep the circuit illuminated so the drivers do not see any visible difference.

Each year, the Grand Prix attracts a sellout crowd of 50,000 people. On track, the world’s best drivers speed around the 5.55km Yas Marina Circuit which wraps around a stunning marina and through the five-star Yas Viceroy hotel. Afterwards there are huge concerts, glamorous parties, gala dinners, family events and more. Those with three-day tickets are invited to go behind the scenes on November 10 and walk down Pit Lane. The action kicks off on Friday, November 11, with practice sessions, GP2, Porsche GT3 and Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup before the Britney Spears concert for ticket holders in the Yas Arena. The stakes are raised on Saturday, November 12, as the F1 drivers vie for pole position during qualifying. GP2, Porsche GT3 and Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup take to the track as well, while Incubus and The Cure hit the stage in the evening. Race day brings fierce competition as the drivers battle for positions on the podium. Expect the finals of the support races, before the legendary Paul McCartney wraps up what will no doubt be an actionpacked weekend.

For those unable to secure one of the 50,000 tickets to the Grand Prix, there is still a multitude of ways to get involved. Bars throughout the city will be screening coverage from Yas Island and there will be a live broadcast with commentary at the F1 FanZone on the Corniche. Even if you’re not in Abu Dhabi on the Grand Prix weekend, you can still get into the Formula One spirit. Yasalam, which is the Arabic word for ‘amazing’ or ‘wow’, is a month-long programme of exciting events, concerts and activities across the city in the lead-up to the Grand Prix. On the Corniche, the F1 FanZone attracted 404,000 visitors over 18 days in 2010 with its schedule of community events. This year promises more motorsport fun with interactive simulators, remote-control car racing, driver signings, official Formula One team merchandise, podium photo opportunities, kite flying demonstrations and live outdoor screenings of the races.

Vettel’s dream run Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel may have dominated the 2011 season, winning the driver’s championship in Suzuka, Japan, last month and claiming the record as the youngest driver to win back-to-back world championships, but can he win again in Abu Dhabi? As the only F1 driver to have taken the chequered flag at Yas Marina Circuit it certainly seems likely. Last year he claimed pole position and top spot on the podium in Abu Dhabi, scoring the world championship for the first time and snatching glory from teammate Mark Webber, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton. In 2009 during Abu Dhabi’s debut Grand Prix, the young German started second on the grid and leapfrogged Hamilton on the first pit stop to take the lead and stay there. While the drivers and constructors championships have already been determined for the 2011 season, the battle is on to see whether someone can knock Vettel off the top of the Yas podium come race day. Will it be 2008 champion Jenson Button, the moody Spaniard Alonso, Aussie battler Webber or British hero Hamilton?

Flat-out Ferrari fun Hold on as the world’s fastest rollercoaster hits 240kmh, get behind the wheel of an F1 simulator and embark on a 4D adventure at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi
Q Words by Amanda Tomlinson
It’s no secret that Abu Dhabi is mad about motorsport. With the 2011 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix taking to the track this month, the city is thriving on petrol fumes. Situated on Yas Island, the country’s home of motorsport, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is hard to miss. Its huge red roof, which has been built in the shape of a classic double-curve body shell of a Ferrari GT and measures 200,000 square metres, is punctuated by the world’s largest Ferrari logo. It offers more than 20 rides and attractions, including the world’s fastest rollercoaster which reaches speeds of 240kmh. Andy Keeling, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi park manager, says the theme park offers an exhilarating experience for families and fans. “There’s more to Ferrari World Abu Dhabi than the thrill of speed racing and powerful cars,” says Keeling. “The park celebrates Ferrari’s past and present, and pays homage to its Italian roots in a bespoke and innovative way, from the stunning structure through to the attractions and various experiences offered.” But what can visitors expect from this high-octane theme park? Concierge takes a look at what’s on offer.

Attention thrill-seekers Ferrari World is a theme park and if there’s one thing that theme parks aim to do well, it’s give thrills. For the ultimate adrenaline fix, Formula Rossa, the world’s fastest rollercoaster, accelerates to 240kmh in less than five seconds, emulating the speed of a Formula One car. It even looks like a Formula One car with racing-style seats, but the circuit has no loops. This is “logical”, according to Keeling, because F1 cars are not meant to be upside down. “If we were in a real Formula One car and it was turning upside down, we’d have a problem.” With extreme speed and G-force, Formula Rossa is powered by a hydraulic winch system similar to those used to launch jet planes and reaches
heights of 50 metres, offering dramatic views across Yas Island. Ferrari World’s other rollercoaster, Fiorano GT Challenge, is based on the roadgoing F430 Spider. It’s a duelling ride with two F430 Spider coasters racing each other at speeds of 100kmh. Like a regular car they brake when the carriage reaches a bend in the track and then accelerate again, twisting through tight corners in a race to the finish line. The third thrill ride is G-Force, which blasts its passengers up through the red roof and back down again. “The tower is about 62 metres, but the ride reaches about 50 metres with 4.5Gs. After reaching this height, you fall weightlessly back down to earth, stopping just before the bottom,” explains Keeling.

Formula One fun
4
One of the best thought-out attractions, according to Keeling, is the Paddock, an area based on a European-style Formula One paddock with two semi trucks, a Ferrari motorhome and service garages. “This gives visitors the chance to see the European race scene, which is very different to what we have here at Yas Marina Circuit. You can look in the semis and see what’s going on with the planning and technical team, go into the garage and touch or pick up tyres, look at the screens for technical data, put on the headphones and listen to the team talking,” enthuses Keeling. “Occasionally some of our guys will grab a Formula One car and push it out into the pit lane, give you some goggles and safety gloves and train you to change the tyres.” Pit Wall is an interactive theatre that offers visitors the chance to dictate race day with tactics and strategies, such as tyre changes, while the 3D Driving with Champions lets fans ride tandem with racing champions as they skid around tight corners and spin through wet surfaces. Take things up a gear and race other fans in one of eight simulators in Scuderia Challenge. Taking charge of the Ferrari F1 steering wheels in Ferrari seats secured by the five-point racing harness, visitors will navigate Yas Marina Circuit in simulators similar to those used by the Scuderia Ferrari drivers in training.

Behind the wheel Think you can give Sebastian Vettel a run for his money? Put your skills to the test with one of these unique driving experiences
Q Words by Amanda Tomlinson
Conquer the desert dunes One of the most popular activities for visitors is a desert safari, which includes being driven in a fully equipped four-wheel drive up and down the towering dunes. With an experienced driver at the wheel, the vehicle is expertly manoeuvered through the soft sand, climbing up the peaks and sliding down again, sometimes sideways. Why not take things one step further and learn how to drive in the desert yourself? The challenging conditions require special skills and training, not to mention a vehicle equipped to handle these. Less than an hour away in Jebel Ali, on the outskirts of Dubai, is an extreme 4x4 track where visitors can learn how to drive in the soft hilly sand with vehicles provided. Visitors will be taught the science behind driving in the sand, the basic manoeuvres to avoid becoming stuck and how to extract a vehicle from the sand if driving alone. Anyone over 25 years old with a valid driver’s licence is welcome. OffRoad-Zone has arrive-and-drive packages that include instruction and use of a 4x4 starting from AED750. Race a go-kart For a driving experience on a smaller scale, put your competitive skills to the test and zip around a race track in a go-kart. Just inches from the ground with superb cornering and manoeuvrability, go-karting is an activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. Al Ain Raceway offers ‘arrive and drive’ sessions which are ideal for visitors looking for a challenge of the motoring kind. On arrival, drivers sign in, change into full race gear and receive a mandatory briefing by an instructor on circuit rules, how to drive and how to use the kart controls. They are then free to get behind the wheel and battle either the clock or family and friends. At the end of the session, drivers receive individual lap time print-outs, a performance graph and statistical information to compare with their fellow drivers or to keep as reference for improvement. Drivers over 16 years can drive karts equipped with steering wheel-mounted information screens which give them up-to-the-minute data such as race position and lap time. Private tuition is also available. Closer to the capital, try karting at Yas Marina Circuit and Al Forsan International Sports Resort. Drive an Aston Martin Make like James Bond and put the pedal to the metal in a race-spec Aston Martin at Yas Marina Circuit. Built in a separate factory by race technicians, it may look like the road-going Aston Martin Vantage, but its 4.7-litre V8 engine is capable of producing speeds of over 300kmh. Put this on the challenging 5.55km Yas Marina Circuit with a fully qualified instructor and you have a recipe for high-octane thrills. Speed down the 1.2km straight, negotiate the first-gear hairpin turn in front of the Northern Grandstand and wind your way around Yas Marina, passing under the iconic Yas Viceroy hotel. The experience includes a thorough briefing on the car and correct racing line before heading out for the first session with an instructor. Back in the pits, the instructor will provide feedback on your performance and make suggestions on how to improve lap times before heading back out for a second session and another chance to practise your newly learnt techniques. At the end of the session you will be given a detailed report showing how well you’ve performed. Yas Marina Circuit, 800 YAS (927), 02 6599800 or www.yasmarinacircuit.ae

Drag racing Think you’re fast? Why not put your skills to the test over the quarter-mile on Yas Marina Circuit’s drag racing strip. Get behind the wheel of the thunderous Chevrolet Camaro SS with its 400hp, 6.2-litre V8 engine and tear down the strip, reaching 100kmh in just 4.6 seconds and breaking through the quarter-mile in 13.3 seconds. The Camaro has an automatic transmission, so there’s no need to perfect gear changes and you can even race your friends along the NRHA-certified drag racing strip. Drivers will receive a technical briefing from the Yas Drag Racing Centre’s chief instructor, who will take you through the necessary training and safety procedures as well as drive the first test run to demonstrate. You will take the wheel for the second run, with the instructor in the passenger seat assessing your ability to drive solo. If you pass, you will be allowed to take the remainder of the runs without the instructor. The experience costs AED600 and must be booked in advance. Off-road buggies If you want your friends to eat your dust, then offroad buggies are for you. Zip around the 10km desert circuit at Al Forsan International Sports Resort in an open-top vehicle built for off-road rallying. There is a choice of buggies to cater for all levels of experience. The Polaris RZR800s has taken the UAE off-road scene by storm, with an 800cc engine that easily powers around the circuit and after-market shock absorbers and wheel kits for maximum stability and jump action. For safety, there is a full roll cage, four-point harness and a safety handle for the passenger. For additional safety and reliability, the Rage R20T has a robust V-twin petrol engine that packs 620cc. Simplicity is the key and the buggy has a stop-and-go system incorporating an accelerator and brake. Embracing four times more power, the Rage 140T has a 1050cc, three-cylinder engine and is fully automatic. Ideal for more advanced racers, it has a five-point safety harness and has been built to FIA standards. Al Forsan International Sports Resort offers a range of other activities, including go karting, shooting, equestrian and watersports as well as restaurants. A man’s world Relax, de-stress and detoxify with a tailored treatment just for men
Anne Semonin Chequered Flag, The Spa The ideal indulgence during the month of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the Anne Semonin Chequered Flag is a one-hour body treatment. Combining the benefits of white salt and black sand from Tahiti, with softening and hydrating properties of calendula, jojoba and sweet almond oils, the black sand body scrub revitalises the skin and stimulates cellular renewal. The treatment begins with the drizzling of aromatic blended oils and the application of crushed black sand which is rubbed along the body, removing dead cells and leaving skin feeling soft and smooth. This is followed by a detoxifying body treatment containing spirulina microalgae to boost toxin release and purify the skin. my LIFE IN ABU DHABI
}
Emirati Faisal Al Sahlawi, racing school manager at Yas Marina Circuit, offers his insider tips for a visit to the capital
1
I have always been a petrol head. I started modifying cars and motorcycles when I was a teenager. I tried to get involved in motor racing, however at the time there weren’t any circuits so I tried rallying instead, but a lack of sponsorship stopped me. My role now is running the Yas Racing School. Working at one of the world’s newest Formula One circuits is definitely a thrill. I get to see and sometimes drive the newest and rarest performance cars and it is always a pleasure to tell people I work at Yas Marina Circuit. They always know it, no matter who I’m talking to or where in the world I am. Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has opened the world’s eyes to this beautiful city. It has always been one of the greatest places in the world to visit. The best place to be in November is Yas Marina Circuit for the Grand Prix. Normally I would suggest visitors try the Yas Racing School driving experiences but since the track will be busy

with F1, my advice is to visit the beautiful beaches around Abu Dhabi. The emirate’s rich maritime heritage dates back centuries and the warm climate and coastal location make it ideal for watersports such as waterskiing, deep sea fishing and sailing. If visitors have the time, their itinerary should include a tour of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, a place of breathtaking beauty and tranquility. Also well worth a visit is the magnificently opulent Emirates Palace hotel at the end of the stunning Corniche, where Abu Dhabi’s bustling city meets the coast. Golfers are spoilt for choice with three championship-ready courses within a 25-minute radius. Shopping options are also vast and the emirate has top modern shopping malls. Marina Mall, Abu Dhabi Mall, Khalidiyah Mall, Al Wahda Mall, Central Market, Souk Qaryat Al Beri and Al Raha Mall are all places to start in the capital. Whatever you fancy doing during your F1 weekend, Abu Dhabi has plenty of choice.

TAG Heuer The Carrera Heritage Collection In 1963, inspired by the sport of motor racing, Jack W. Heuer started work on a new chronograph specifically designed for motorracing enthusiasts. A year in the making, the mechanical, manual-wound chronograph was aptly named after the Carrera Panamericana, a five-day, 3,300-kilometre race across Mexico. This inspirational timepiece has evolved over the decades, with new editions and innovations adding to its appeal. This year, TAG Heuer released the Carrera Heritage Collection. With a big nod to the golden age of watchmaking and celebrating 150 years of horological tradition, everything from the exquisite engraving to the raised numerals is historically accurate. Several options are available, including stainless steel, gold and rose gold, all with crystal sapphire case backs, showing the cogs and wheels of the movement inside.

The first collaboration between master watchmakers Armin Strom and Marussia Virgin Racing team is a series of three custom-built timepieces in the racing stable’s team colours – black, red and white. Fashioned from the same components and materials as the engine parts of Formula One racing cars, these titanium marvels are crafted with automatic winding, chronograph functions and a power reserve of 46 hours.
After the success of the F1 King Power Tourbillion, it’s no surprise that Hublot’s latest creation has proved a speedy success with racing enthusiasts. Unveiled at the 2011 Formula 1 UBS Chinese Grand Prix, this premier timepiece is built from ceramic and boasts hour, minute and second counters, making it the perfect device for timing rubber-burning circuit laps. You’ll need to be quick off the mark to get your hands on this one because the King Power Ceramic is a limited edition, with only 500 numbered pieces up for grabs.

According to its creators, ‘If the Silverstone Tourbillograph Full Black were a character, it would be wearing a bespoke dinner jacket and drinking a glass of Champagne.’ Four years in the making, the engineering behind this unmistakably masculine timepiece has put an end to the intrinsic weaknesses often associated with tourbillions. No longer fragile, the reduced number of components, lightness and double-bridge construction guarantees stability and perfect rigidity. Likewise, sensitivity to magnetism has also been reduced through the systematic use of iron-free components. The winning combination of style and technology means that this sophisticated model is not only beautiful, but has all the resistance of a military watch.

malls and more Whether you’re searching for traditional souvenirs, designer fashion or that perfect piece of sparkling gold jewellery, Abu Dhabi’s malls and souks offer a treasure chest of surprises waiting to be discovered
Q Shopping enthusiasts have ample opportunity to flex their credit cards in the nation’s capital. Not only is the destination a tax-free haven, it also offers a wide choice of traditional souks and modern shopping malls where endless hours can be spent discovering hidden treasures. Marina Mall, Abu Dhabi Mall, Al Wahda Mall and Khalidiya Mall all offer an array of internationally recognised brands, both high street and high end. All four malls are one-stop leisure and shopping destinations with a wealth of stores offering almost every conceivable brand name from fashion to footwear items, and jewellery to luxury lifestyle products. Marina Mall is situated on the Breakwater and has a leisurely shopping atmosphere complete with entertainment and dining offerings for all the family, including an ice skating rink, bowling village and cinema. It is the main choice for designer fashion, stocking boutiques for Armani, Chanel,
Dior and Louis Vuitton, to name a few. Visitors will find everything from jewellery and accessories to electronics, sporting goods, cosmetics and household items. With more than 200 retail outlets spread over four floors, Abu Dhabi Mall has something for everyone. Family fun is guaranteed with a nine-screen Cineplex, a huge food court and casual cafés dotted around the mall, as well as a popular children’s play area. Al Wahda Mall has a variety of well-known brands including Club Monaco, Beyond the Beach and Next. Meanwhile Khalidiya Mall offers a good mix of high-street outlets as well as a children’s fun centre and cinema. For high-end perfumes and accessories, visit Paris Gallery which also has a Serenity Spa. Other shopping malls that have stood the test of time are the Fotouh Al Khair centre, Hamdan Centre and Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre (home to the city’s gold souk), while Mushrif Mall on Airport Road opened recently.
73
Souk search While there are several sophisticated shopping malls to choose from, traditional markets – souks – play an equally important role and should feature prominently on every visitor’s agenda. The souk consists of numerous small stores or stalls which sell a wide range of goods, both the necessities and the luxuries. The open-air souks have much to offer, with oriental spices, vibrantly coloured fabrics, prized Persian rugs, traditional designs in jewellery and more. Combining old-world charm with modern-day sophistication, the souks are a reflection of Abu Dhabi’s past, when bargaining was the order of the day. Historically, they were considered important meeting places as much as they were trading centres. The early markets were rambling sandy alleys crammed with stalls and tea or coffee houses where people gathered to discuss the day’s events over shisha (hubbly bubbly), a cup of sweetened tea or gahwa, the famed Arabic coffee.
1

3
2
4
5
Some still have small coffee or teashops located on or off the main thoroughfares and visitors can expect to be offered a complimentary cup or two from friendly stallholders as a precursor to some intense bargaining. In days gone by, it may well have been possible to buy just about anything from a bag of salt or a camel, to incense for the home or gold for a wedding. However, the newer souks often specialise in different products, thus creating individual markets such as the fish souk, fruit and vegetable souk, carpet souk and gold souk.
There are also modern attractions, such as the new Central Market Souk or the Arabian-themed Souk at Qaryat Al Beri where visitors will find traditional goods and souvenirs, jewellery, coffee shops and restaurants. The colourful, open-air Iranian Souk in the Al Mina area features goods imported by dhow from Iran, including exotic bedspreads, carpets and handpainted pottery, while the carpet souk is a great place to look for oriental carpets and rugs. Great buys at Abu Dhabi’s souks include traditional silver and brass coffee

pots, carpets from Iran, India or Pakistan, incense and oudh, the local perfume essence. Prices are generally competitive. The trick to shopping wisely is to bargain forcefully, starting with the lowest possible price you are willing to offer – and unlikely to pay – but working up to a point where you feel that you have made a real bargain. In most souks, bargaining is expected and part of the charming sales process. Gold, electronic goods, textiles and carpets are usually the best value for money, while other great bargains are traditional handicrafts in the form of handwoven baskets, mats, camel blankets, crafted metal artifacts and jewellery. 9

Al Ain Al Ain Mall is the retail centrepiece of the Garden City and features anchor stores such as Home Centre, Grand Stores and Paris Gallery. The family entertainment area includes a 12-lane bowling alley and a multi-screen cinema, as well as an indoor ice-skating rink. The popular Al Jimi Mall stocks premium brand fashion, cosmetics, jewellery, perfumeries and attractive terrace cafés and restaurants. Al Ain’s largest shopping area, Bawadi Mall, has almost 400 shops, a 10,000-square-metre family entertainment centre, eight-screen cinema and a 16-lane bowling alley. There’s also a souk with 55 traditional-style retailers and an adjacent camel market which is worth a visit. The Al Ain Souk with its authentic ambience sells a mixture of household goods, as well as fruit and vegetables, and is a great place to explore.

Savour the FLAVOUR Abu Dhabi is a foodie’s paradise with top quality restaurants offering authentic cuisine in spectacular settings
Q Words by Amanda Tomlinson
Seafood Finz Perched over the water in a wooden hut, this romantic seafood restaurant has a boardwalk terrace that’s perfect for outdoor dining. Whether taking in the views of the glistening Gulf waters or observing the growing Abu Dhabi skyline, by day or night Finz is one of Abu Dhabi’s favourite restaurants. The menu features all manner of seafood dishes, but perhaps one of the most recommended is the salt-crusted sea bass for two, which comes with lobster and tarragon sauce, seasonal vegetables, baby potatoes and rice. The mixed seafood grill platter is also popular. The seafood is sourced from all over the world. The sea bass is from Norway, the Dover sole from European waters, the sako tuna comes from the Philippines, the oysters are from France, the salmon from Norway and the catch of the day is from the local fish market. The wine list is extensive, while the service is friendly and attentive. There are few better ways to enjoy a seafood meal than overlooking the water, with a gentle breeze of mild sea air. Steakhouses Chamas
A l s o t ry
There are two things you’ll need to get through dinner at Chamas: A large appetite and a craving for meat. That’s not to say that vegetarians won’t be catered for here – there is an extensive salad bar – but really, it’s more for the avid carnivores. Chamas, which means flames in Portuguese, is Abu Dhabi’s only churrascaria, or Brazilian-style steakhouse, and the pasadors (meat waiters) roam the restaurant with a variety of f lame-grilled meat on long skewers eagerly carving slices onto the diners’ plates. After choosing their first course from the salad buffet, guests will find a coaster-sized disk at each place setting when they return to their table. One side of the disk is red while the other side is green. This is to let the pasadors know when to bring more meat. Red means ‘not now thanks’, while green means ‘bring it on’. With a warm atmosphere, energetic staff and as much meat as diners can stomach, guests are certain to remember their meal at Chamas.

Asian Hakkasan One of the first restaurants of high-end international fame to open in the capital, Hakkasan is an ultra-trendy Chinese restaurant from a Michelin-star stable. The restaurant’s design and décor are as much a work of art as the dishes. Dark wood, high ceilings, creative lighting and private dining spaces adequately reflect the modern Chinese cuisine while still capturing the Middle Eastern location. Start the evening at the 20-metre-long bar and enjoy a signature cocktail before moving through to the restaurant, which is divided into two sections with private dining areas. Those near the kitchen can watch the chefs through the aquarium-like blue glass. The menu is impressive with many Hakkasan specialities. Try the jasmine teasmoked wagyu beef ribs as a starter and charcoal-grilled silver cod with Champagne and Chinese honey for main. Regional Mezlai The UAE’s first five-star Emirati restaurant, Mezlai at Emirates Palace is a must for those who want to taste more than just the local culture during their visit. While Lebanese cuisine is common throughout Abu Dhabi, Emirati cuisine has been hard to find, until now. Mezlai’s chef, Ali Salim Ebdowa, says Emirati food differs from Lebanese food in the way it is cooked and the spices that are used. Chef Ebdowa recommends visitors try his signature dish lamb medfoun. “You don’t see this dish every day,” says chef Ebdowa. “Families would normally make it during Eid. It’s a once-a-year dish.” The roasted lamb shoulder with chick peas in tomato sauce is served with a sauce of dates, honey, vinegar, yeast, local spices and garlic. Mezlai is not out of place in the opulent Emirates Palace hotel. With high ceilings and large windows, it is bathed by light during the day yet cosy in the evenings. Arabian hospitality is at the core of the experience and diners are treated to Arabic coffee and dates in the majlis on arrival. Where: Emirates Palace / When: 1 to 11pm Contact: 02 6909000
Italian Spaccanapoli This central Abu Dhabi restaurant serves simple traditional food that an Italian family would prepare at home. According to restaurant manager Luca Busato, when the team was putting together the initial menu, “we had to think of what our mums would cook at home”. Spaccanapoli’s warm, themed interior has a relaxed atmosphere making it perfect for families. But the real treat is in the eating and this is something Spaccanapoli does on a grand scale. The large wood-fired pizza oven can produce one-metrelong pizzas. All recipes are prepared using traditional methods and with an Italian chef and restaurant manager, diners know they are in for the real deal.

Romantic Bord Eau One of the city’s most distinctive sights, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, lies across the water from this elegant French restaurant. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide stunning views of this iconic landmark. While the mosque is impressive by day, with strategically placed lighting casting creative shadows and spotlights, it is a must-see by night. Shimmering reflections on the water add to the spectacle. The fine French cuisine is exquisite and Bord Eau has consistently won awards. Its menu of classic dishes is complemented by a selection of wine and guests will be offered a glass of Champagne on arrival. Bord Eau’s new chef de cuisine Alexandre Pernetta has worked in kitchens in France, Switzerland and Canada under the guidance of Michelin-star chefs. His creations include foie gras terrine with fig jelly and dates, seared scallops with apple butter and his signature venison with girole mushrooms and five spices. Bord Eau is the setting for romance. Everything from the French cuisine, quiet music and classic décor is conducive to couples looking for somewhere special. You won’t just fall in love with the food and views.

Views relax@12 One of the hippest hotspots, relax@12 has fabulous views of the city from all angles, both inside and out. Step inside the glass-walled venue, take a seat at one of the booths and gaze at the panoramic view of Al Muzoon Peninsula, the outskirts of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zayed Mosque and beyond to Yas Island. Venture outside to the terrace for fresh air and views of the Abu Dhabi skyline, Al Bateen Airport and the eastern section of Abu Dhabi island. While it’s one of the best places to catch the sunset and enjoy a predinner cocktail, relax@12 is popular with nocturnal types, with DJs playing throughout the week. The Asian tapas menu has a distinct Japanese flavour with a heavy focus on sushi and sashimi, however there are other dishes such as satay and salad for those not keen on delicacies from the deep. With some of the best views and a trendsetting crowd moving in, this is clearly not just a place for seeing, but also a place to be seen. Nightclub Zenith When it comes to nightclubs, Abu Dhabi has its fair share of glamorous haunts, but one that has stood the test of time is Zenith. This two-storey club attracts a young, hip crowd from a variety of nationalities, but it is particularly popular with those from Western and Arab countries. Zenith is known for its innovative cocktails and if guests don’t find what they want on the extensive menu, the mixologists will create something special. Those in the know go for the punchy ‘karma sutra’ cocktail and the ‘fashionista’ with its fruity flavours. The big hit each week is Saturday’s Arabic night, however the DJ caters for all tastes playing house, R&B and international music as well as Arabic tunes. The daily grind Arabic coffee, with its unique taste, is a symbol of hospitality in the Middle East
Q Words by Amanda Tomlinson
For millions of people around the world, coffee is the only way to start the day. For some, meeting with friends over a fresh brew is a key component in their social life, while for others it provides a welcome break from the day’s chores. Coffee, which was discovered in Ethiopia, has played an important social and religious function since the ninth century. By the 15th century, coffee was being consumed in Yemen, Persia, Turkey and Egypt, as well as other parts of northern Africa. It later spread to Italy and many parts of Europe. These days it is truly international and it’s not uncommon to see Starbucks on every second street corner in cities all around the world. In the UAE, however, there is more to coffee than international chains and Italian blends. Here it is a symbol of hospitality that dates back to Bedouin times when people

greeted their guests with a small cup of steaming, freshly brewed Arabic coffee. “It was a drink that made people feel good,” explains Nasif Kayed, general manager of the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. “We now know this is because of the caffeine, but back then it was a nice beverage to welcome your guests with.” While it was one of the few drinks available at the time, it is still a preferred beverage in the Middle East today and still a traditional welcome drink. The coffee is served immediately on arrival from a dallah (traditional coffee pot). The gahwaji (coffee waiter) refills the empty cups until the guest gently shakes their cup to indicate they have had enough. It is customary to take two or three cups. More than three is considered greedy, while less than two is impolite. It is often
served with dates, which helps to break down the bitter taste. The coffee has a unique flavour, which changes depending on the preference of the person making it. The only ingredient that is always used is cardamom, which helps to settle the stomach. “Saffron is sometimes added to give flavour and colour,” says Kayed. “Ginger can also be added for taste and for its medicinal qualities, as can cloves.” The coffee beans are lightly roasted, coarsely ground and then boiled for 10 to 15 minutes. It is transferred to the dallah for easy pouring and served from small cups with no handles. There are many hotels in Abu Dhabi that offer fresh Arabic coffee to guests on arrival. Alternatively, visitors who take a desert safari will usually be able to sample Arabic coffee and dates.
Coffee lingo The coffee pot is called a dallah, while the cup, which is roughly the size of espresso cups, is called a finjaan. A coffee waiter is called a gahwaji.

Capital of culture Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island will soon be home to the world-famous Louvre and Guggenheim museums. The Abu Dhabi government is spending over US$1 billion to bring these cultural landmarks to the emirate. They have also signed some of the world’s most renowned architects, including Frank Gehry who shot to fame with his design of the Guggenheim Bilbao in Spain, and Jean Nouvel, who designed the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. In addition, the Zayed National Museum will be designed by Lord Norman Foster, making the Cultural District the only place in the world to have buildings designed by five Pritzker Prize winners. The Louvre Abu Dhabi is set to open in 2013, while the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open in 2014. Learn more about Saadiyat Island’s Cultural District at an exhibition at Emirates Palace which is open daily from 10am to 10pm. Entry is free. For more information, phone 02 6908207. SHOPPING ETIQUETTE Women should make sure that shoulders and the top half of legs are covered in Abu Dhabi’s malls and souks. Keep in mind that the UAE is a Muslim country and respect its culture. Take care not to wear anything too revealing or suggestive. Comfortable, light clothing is recommended, but it’s wise to carry a wrap or jumper in shopping malls as the air conditioning can be chilly. Refrain from public displays of affection.

THE FRIDAY BRUNCH While it may take its name from the meal eaten between breakfast and lunch, confusingly the UAE’s Friday brunch is more of an afternoon commitment. Generally lasting from noon until 4pm, Friday brunch is hosted by most of the city’s hotels and is typically an all-youcan-eat buffet with unlimited beverages. Brunches range from cheap and cheerful (AED100 and up) to a sophisticated gourmet affair (AED500). They are hugely popular with the expat community so be sure to book in advance.

Smoking shisha (hubbly bubbly) is very popular in Abu Dhabi. The Middle Eastern water pipe, which is thought to have originated around 500 years ago, purifies and cools the smoke from flavoured tobacco heated on top of the pipe by coals. It costs approximately AED35 to AED50 to smoke and the most popular flavours are apple, mint, strawberry, apricot and grape. Although relaxing and sociable, estimates suggest that an hour of shisha smoking equates to inhaling as many as 50 cigarettes. If you’re after an authentic taste of Middle Eastern culture, however, smoking shisha is a must. Just remember not to inhale too deeply, blow down the pipe to get rid of smoke build-up in the water and share your shisha among friends. This is a social tradition and to be enjoyed in groups or couples.
