The ‘garden city’ of Al Ain is home to numerous parks, gardens and plantations. The Al Ain Oasis, in the heart of the city, covers 1,200 hectares and has more than 147,000 date palms. I often suggest to guests that they visit Al Ain National Museum and Al Ain Palace Museum to get a broad understanding of the rich culture and heritage of the city. The museums cover the early roots thousands of years ago to the time oil was discovered and on to the present day. Al Ain is unique because it is an oasis and that is best documented in the museums. Al Jahili Fort is also worth visiting because it shows a lot about the tribal culture that ruled the country until 1971. During the past centuries, Al Ain’s forts have been vital for the survival of the tribes and this is interesting to see. Another place to visit is Green Mubazzarah at the foot of Jebel Hafeet and the mountain itself. Green Mubazzarah is a real oasis and is green because of the hot springs that come from under the mountain. Al Ain Wildlife Park is ideal for families and those who love animals. The best zoo in the region, it is home to treasures like white lions and white tigers. There is a very good display of animals from the Middle East and Africa and its setting against the Hajar Mountains is picturesque. For those staying in Abu Dhabi, it is easy to visit Al Ain for a day trip as the city is only one and a half hours away. It is very different from other places in the UAE, making it worth the short journey. In addition to being one of the greenest places in the country, Al Ain is also one of the oldest. Many sites have received UNESCO World Heritage listing, proving that Al Ain has something different to offer from the metropolises of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Camel culture As the camel racing season gets under way this month, Concierge shines a spotlight on these much-loved ships of the desert

Q The camel is synonymous with life on the Arabian Peninsula and its silhouette, wandering across an undulating desert at dusk, has become a celluloid icon. For thousands of years, and from one generation to another, the single-humped dromedary has played an indispensable part in Arab culture, both socially and economically. Long used for transportation, trade, food and entertainment, there are 160 words for â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;camelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in the Arabic language and these ships of the desert are deeply ingrained in Emirati life. While camel trains carrying silks and spices no longer roam the land, camel racing is big business in the UAE. Trackside at these noisy events is unfailingly busy and the excitement contagious. Hundreds of spectators, owners and trainers throng the edge of the sandy tracks during the official race season, which runs from October to the end of April. There are two races per day on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and national holidays, and admission is free.

The sport of sheikhs There are several purpose-built facilities for races throughout the UAE. The main ones are Al Wathba Camel Race Track, 45 kilometres from Abu Dhabi on the Al Ain Road, and Al Maqam race track, just outside Al Ain. Races are held on weekend mornings and are free to attend. There is also a race track and camel farms near the Tilal Liwa Hotel just outside Madinat Zayed, where visitors can watch races and the camels being trained. Attending the camel races remains a popular tourist attraction. Trackside at these noisy events is unfailingly busy and the excitement contagious. Each adrenaline-fuelled race comprises brightly coloured robot jockeys that replaced the child jockey a few years ago, being carried along at breakneck speeds of approximately 60kmh. In the ’80s, there may have been 30 or 40 races per season with a Range Rover

a typical prize for the winner. Now, the prize for winning the final race of the day is approximately AED400,000 as well as a car. Twelve years ago a camel may have cost a few hundred dirhams. Five years ago, it would have been AED1.5 million or AED2 million. Now it can be anywhere from AED7 million upwards. Spotting a potential winning camel requires a great deal of patience. There are two important traits to look out for: large, powerful hind legs and a broad chest, which indicates a big lung capacity. A camel’s reflexes are also important as well as its attention to its surroundings. If the camel ticks all of these boxes, training will begin from the age of 18 months. The animals are normally trained in groups of 20 or 30 and trainers use contemporary techniques including swimming pools, treadmills and massages to ensure the camels are in peak condition.

Cheers and chukkas Aside from camel racing, visitors can get up close and personal with camels on a trip to one of the vibrant, year-round camel markets. At the bustling Al Ain Camel Market near Bawadi Mall, camel owners meet to barter, buy and sell. Traders can still be seen hand weaving camel halters and lead ropes or offering to sell their large, colourful and inexpensive cotton camel blankets. Alternatively, contact a local tour operator and enquire about nostalgic camel treks to traditional Bedouin camps nestled in the sand dunes, or visits to Bedouin villages and their camel farms. Many desert safaris combine camel riding with sand-boarding, dune driving and barbecues under the stars. The Al Dhafra Camel Festival in Madinat Zayed in Al Gharbia (Western Region) usually takes place in December. It includes a rare camel beauty contest and other cultural events that

promote the emirate’s unique heritage. The camels are judged on features such as the length of their eyelashes and legs, the shape of their head and ears, and the colour of their fur. Winning camels can fetch millions of dollars in prize money and cars, not to mention the increase a win adds to their value. Visitors can also head to the Dubai Polo Academy (050 8879847) near Arabian Ranches and try their hand at camel polo. Two team members ride one camel in this surprisingly popular sport. One sits in front and steers while the other attempts to hit the ball. At the end of a chukka – each period of the game – the players swap roles. There are four chukkas per game and the camels, who have a tendency to stop and sit at any given moment, are allowed two ‘lie downs’ in any one chukka. There is a big ball which the camels often kick. Players wear proper team shirts and look like polo players. Novices can also play, ensuring a memorable experience working with traditional transport in an unconventional fashion. It makes for a uniquely Arabian day out with family and friends.

Hunters in harmony The bond between the falcon and the Bedouin has always been strong, based on the bird of prey’s ability to hunt game for food

The national bird of the United Arab Emirates, the magnificent falcon adorns every official document in the country. Prey caught by the birds helped to feed Bedouin families, contributing in a practical way to the survival of the nomads in a hostile desert environment. As a result, the birds are respected, admired and revered in local culture and people from all backgrounds keep and breed them. Hunting with falcons has been banned in the UAE to protect species such as houbaras (bustards) or karawan (stone curlews) – the natural prey which were becoming endangered species. Despite this, the husbandry of falcons still remains of paramount importance to local people and many falcon enthusiasts travel abroad on hunting holidays to Africa and Asia. The admiration of these majestic birds is passed from generation to generation. Hunting plays a less significant role, with enthusiasts often simply training and flying the birds for pleasure. Falcons think with their eyes. Because their eyesight is so sharp, they can be upset by large crowds of people or unfamiliar places. Birds can be calmed by placing a hood over their heads, locally called a burqa. When they cannot see, they are immediately calmed. Training a falcon to return to the owner’s hand is a slow and instinctive exercise in bonding. The falconer begins slowly, allowing the falcon to roam for short distances. He uses a lure, usually a reward of food, to bring the falcon back. The two major breeds of falcon native to the UAE are the saker (al hurr) and the peregrine (al shaheen). The process of breeding and registering the birds is taken seriously. There are even falcon passports, aimed at stamping out illegal trade. Most birds are bought in August before the sport season starts in September. This marks the busiest time for breeders. Tall birds are prized, especially the gyrfalcon/peregrine mixed breeds. The gyrfalcon are revered for their good looks, but being Arctic birds are less adaptive to the heat of the desert. Breeding a gyrfalcon with a peregrine introduces stamina and the ability to cope with the harsh desert climate. Birds are measured for height, breadth and length from shoulder to tail. They are also analysed for athleticism. White birds and those with certain shades of brown are considered more beautiful among local falconers and are consequently more expensive. Deals are done, birds literally change hands and the falconry community prepares itself for a winter of sport.

Delicate ecosystem After a safety briefing and quick instruction on how to paddle, our guide Mark Freeman, who is co-owner and managing partner of Noukhada Adventure Company, leads us into the open water. Our flotilla of five kayaks surges towards the mangrove forests, with a mild headwind slowing things down. As it’s the start of the tour, however, we are full of energy and enthusiasm and the breeze provides welcome relief from the sun. On reaching the mangroves, we head down a dredged boating channel. Unfortunately the impact of boats cruising through at speed has caused erosion on a sand island, which is home to an elusive Arabian red fox. As Mark is telling us about the female fox that lives there with her young cub, she rears her head briefly. It’s the first time in a month that she has been spotted, but her appearance is limited. Nevertheless, we still feel privileged that she chose that moment to surface.

Mark paddles close to the mangroves to explain why Abu Dhabi’s forests are so unique. Not only do they have to contend with extreme heat for a good portion of the year, they have also had to adapt to warm water temperatures, high salinity and very little rainfall. As a result, the mangroves have become extremely hardy.

Mark shows us some small crabs, no bigger than the palm of a hand. He says we will see thousands of the little crustaceans on the trunks of the plants, just above the water line. Our group ventures into the mangrove forest. The temperature is much cooler under the shade of the canopy and there are easy-to-follow natural canals. These change depending on the tide, however, so tours do not always follow the same route. The width of the canals varies as we proceed and sometimes thoughtful manouevres are required to nagivate the path, which causes a few pile-ups and giggles

from the kayaking party. Once inside it is so easy to spot the thousands of small crabs and take a close look at the remarkable mangrove plants. It seems a world away from the skyscrapers and traffic of Abu Dhabi and even further from the desert landscape that the emirate is known for. As we make our way out of the bushes, I reflect on how peaceful and calm the tour has been. It is ideal for those who enjoy being active in the great outdoors as well as anyone with an appreciation for nature.

Mangrove conservation Mangroves around the world are incredibly important for the health of the oceans. Not only do they filter the sea water, they provide vital breeding and nursery grounds for many species of marine animals as well as protected habitats for birds and other marine creatures. In addition, mangroves help reduce shoreline erosion by acting as a buffer from

waves and ocean currents, and reduce the impact of global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide. Realising the importance of mangroves, the late Sheikh Zayed introduced a planting programme towards the end of the 1970s and today, more than twothirds of the UAE’s mangrove forests can be found in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. Thabit Al Abdessalaam, director of biodiversity management sector at the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi, says, “The mangrove plays an integral role in the marine ecosystem, providing a habitat for aquatic and terrestrial fauna and flora, as well as offsetting carbon emissions which help reduce the effects of climate change.” What better reason to get out and explore these wonders in an environmentally friendly manner. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Without doubt, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is Abu Dhabi’s number one attraction for visitors. It receives hundreds of thousands of visitors each month and is one of the few in the UAE open to non-muslims. Said Orchi, concierge at the Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, says the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the most remarkable religious and national landmark in Abu Dhabi. “It’s possibly one of the most significant architectural treasures of the UAE and one of the largest and most beautiful in the world,” he explains. Opened to the public in 2007, its namesake the late Sheikh Zayed wanted a mosque that would bring together people of all nationalities and religions and help them understand Islam. And in doing so, he gave the emirate one of its most striking monuments. Visitors can take one of several daily tours conducted by Emirati guides who detail the architectural and cultural significance of the mosque as well as Sheikh Zayed. The guides also answer any questions. The tour takes in the courtyard, ablution areas and the main prayer hall, which can accommodate 7,126 worshippers. The entire mosque, meanwhile, has a full capacity for more than 41,000 worshippers. “I tell my guests to look out for the mosque’s many features, such as the seven imported chandeliers from Germany featuring millions of Swarovski crystals, and the world’s largest carpet designed by Iranian artist Ali Khaliki, which is located in the main prayer hall,” Orchi explains. “Other things to look out for are pools along the arcades that reflect the mosque’s spectacular columns and become even more glorious at night, or the 82 Moroccan-designed domes made of white marble and the 96 columns in the main prayer hall that are ornately clad with marble and inlaid with mother of pearl.” Free tours are held from Sunday to Thursday at 10am, 11am and 5pm, Fridays at 2pm, 5pm and 7.30pm and Saturdays at 10am, 11am, 2pm, 5pm and 7.30pm. Beaches and islands Abu Dhabi’s stunning coastline is peppered by more than 200 islands, making it a haven for water lovers. Whether it’s jetskiing, scuba diving or sailing, the emirate offers a plethora of aquatic activities for all ages. Abu Dhabi is fast making a name for itself in the yachting world with luxury marinas at Emirates Palace and Yas Island and the staging of the third leg of the Volvo Ocean Race, a first for the Middle East. The gruelling roundthe-world yacht race stops in the city from January 1 to 14 with a range of big-ticket events and festivities. In the meantime however, there is plenty to see and do on the water in Abu Dhabi. Visitors can charter a luxury yacht and explore the islands, take a kayaking tour through the mangroves or go deep sea fishing to land the catch of the day. Desert Beautiful and picturesque, yet harsh and unpredictable, the desert plays a huge role in Abu Dhabi’s culture, heritage and identity. Once inhabited by the Bedouin, who had ingenious ways of dealing with the conditions, the desert is a must-visit. The desert scenery changes dramatically along the road from Abu Dhabi to Liwa, from a flat sandy landscape near the coast to the rolling red dunes of the Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter). In fact, the inhospitable Rub Al Khali begins in Abu Dhabi’s Al Gharbia (Western Region) and spans a quarter of the Arabian Peninsular, or an area roughly the size of France, Belgium and Holland combined. It is the largest uninterrupted sand mass in the world. Visitors can take a day trip to the Rub Al Khali through a tour operator, or experience the desert on a half-day safari, which includes dune driving before stopping at a desert camp for camel riding, an Arabic barbecue and belly dancing entertainment. Gharib Aly Hassan, concierge at the Tilal Liwa Hotel near Madinat Zayed, recommends a trip to Tel Moreeb, the world’s tallest sand dune at 300 metres high with a 50-degree incline. “Visitors should definitely explore the dunes of Liwa and the legendary Rub Al Khali, also known as the Empty Quarter,” Hassan says. “Sunset is a beautiful time in the desert, so take some time to watch the sun dip behind the rolling sand dunes of Liwa.”

Yas Island Yas Island is entertainment central. Boasting a Formula One circuit, Ferrari theme park, links golf course and concert arenas, it is where a lot of the action happens. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is the world’s largest indoor theme park and according to Oussama Itani, chief concierge at the Crowne Plaza Abu Dhabi Yas Island, it has something for everyone. “There are 20 rides and attractions, including Formula Rossa, the world’s fastest rollercoaster, which hits a breathtaking 240kmh,” Itani says. Visitors can also race a simulator around a virtual Yas Marina Circuit. Yas Links provides an 18-hole beachfront golf challenge with picturesque views. “Designed by golf course architect Kyle Phillips and set against dramatic views of the Arabian Gulf, Yas Links is the perfect place to experience the island’s natural beauty,” Itani explains. Yas comes alive at night with regular concerts at the Yas Arena and Flash Forum, as well as trendy bars and clubs to get the party started. “The hotels on Yas Island offer a variety of dining options. Golf Abu Dhabi has some of the most spectacular golf courses in the Gulf, including two stunning beachfront courses and a desert course, so it’s no surprise that golf has become a leading activity for visitors. The city’s three main courses include the Abu Dhabi Golf Club, Saadiyat Beach Golf Club and Yas Links. Autumn/winter 2011 depicts today’s gentleman as confident, resilient and decisive. His suits are tailored to a tee and he isn’t afraid to experiment with colour – be it striking rose pink or dazzling red-orange. The spirit of adventure courses through his veins. Rugged, weathered denim, paired with mountaineer boots and an oversized sweater is his rough-and-ready weekend look. His accessories, whether it’s hats, shawls or weekend bags, are essential to complete his look.

The colours

The most refreshing element of autumn/winter 2011 is the colour palette. Neutrals are filled with blues, camels and rich caramels, while mid-tones lean towards red, orange, navy and most importantly, chocolate. The more vivid hues are yellow, teal and blue. A dusty rose tone was also popular with Lanvin and Gucci. The latter paired it with an indigo blue, exploring a striking new colour harmony. As expected, these colours are featured on the D&G catwalk and even Hermès got in on the action with a surprising array of warm yellows and bright blues. Over at Louis Vuitton, studio director Paul Helbers was inspired by the dramatic red-orange shade of motel neon signs from David Lynch films.

The formal look

Perhaps the most impressive collection out of Milan this autumn came from the house of Ermenegildo Zegna, a brand that has always been a good representation of the most important cuts and silhouettes in the world of men’s fashion. While other designers (namely Lanvin) appear to be torn between a slim silhouette and a more relaxed look, Zegna knows exactly what it’s doing. Razor-sharp precision in tailoring means the new Zegna suit is extremely flattering, especially with its hourglass jackets and bold, defined shoulders. Admittedly, this is a more feminine shape, but lately androgyny seems to be the name of the game, especially for autumn/winter 2011. This season, the brand commemorates its 20-year collaboration with China, which resulted in a feast of textures and fabrics. These included a luscious wool plaid, pure cashmere and, of course, silk.

For a more comfortable look (one which the American designers have mastered) it turns out patchwork is no longer a grandma’s pastime. This trend is emerging in American brands such as Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren lines, Rugby and Denim & Supply. While the Hilfiger and Rugby iterations are somewhat demure (think corduroy and herringbone tweed), newly launched Ralph Lauren label Denim & Supply went all out with its statement flag patchwork jeans. Oversized cable knits and patterned sweaters (once again, not just for your grandma) are also trending.

The accessories

Accessorising for the cooler climes of autumn/winter is a matter of necessity and this season’s fashion accoutrements don’t disappoint. Footwear is all about chunky boots, which perfectly offset the slimmer pant leg. At the top of the list are Thom Browne’s creations and Louis Vuitton’s range is a close second. Although Christian Louboutin is best known for his ladies’ shoes, the men’s line is unlike any other. The spiky Louis sneaker comes in a Swarovski-encrusted strass assortment. For the less adventurous, the Alfie ankle sneaker is a safer bet but still proves the French designer’s shoe prowess. Hats are definitely trending this winter, but rather than the knitted variety, more structured looks from Dior Homme and Louis Vuitton have hit catwalks across Paris. Lanvin also presented a fine collection of head ware in a diverse winter colour palette. The most exciting collection of men’s bags is Louis Vuitton’s brand new Damier Inifini line. This embossed calfskin take on the classic chequered pattern is seen in the Keepall (the ultimate weekend/travel bag for guys), Porte-Documents Voyage, Zippy Wallet and other small leather goods.

The outerwear The most exciting part of any autumn/winter collection is the outerwear and this year is particularly interesting. Double-breasted seems to be the name of the game, be it a smooth, navy Hermès or heftier khaki wool by Giorgio Armani. Viktor & Rolf led the trench coat race by a mile with their sleek, belted variety. Bomber jackets are also a must-have for autumn, from Jean Paul Gaultier’s over-the-top gold version to a sleeker olive green alternative from Z Zegna. And of course, shearling is everywhere, but it’s the black Rick Owens variety that is particularly noteworthy. Louis Vuitton expertly combined these two autumn jacket trends with a shearling bomber in charcoal grey. On the opposite side of the outerwear spectrum, the flowing, minimalist coats set in pale creams and greys from the likes of Lanvin and Dior Homme were by far the greatest outerwear creation for the season, adding an air of elegance to the more formal, tailored looks shown underneath.

Arabian nights With authentic cuisine and nightly entertainment, a meal at one of the city’s Middle Eastern restaurants is the ideal way to sample Arabic culture

Anar Cuisine: Persian Meaning ‘pomegranate’ in Farsi, Anar serves traditional Iranian food and if the clientele is anything to go by, it’s safe to say this is something it does very well. The restaurant attracts a mix of nationalities, but is particularly popular with the Emirati crowd. A warm friendly welcome greets diners before they are ushered along a wide corridor decorated with Iranian trinkets. The restaurant, which is bathed in light courtesy of large windows, has a predominantly red colour scheme from the highly decorative Persian carpet on the floor to the table runners and glass plates. The vibrant tone contrasts perfectly with the blue and white Persian tiles on the walls. But Iranian architecture and décor form just one part of the Anar experience. Start the meal with Beluga caviar, which comes with chopped egg white and egg yolk, parsley, onion and toasted taftan bread which is made onsite in the restaurant’s tanoor oven. There’s an extensive selection of salads to follow but save room for the polow (rice dishes), which come highly recommended, and the grills, which can be ordered as part of a mixed platter for maximum variety. Min Zaman Cuisine: Lebanese This Lebanese restaurant in the heart of Al Ain city is renowned for its authentic cuisine and nightly belly dancing performances. With both indoor and al fresco dining options, guests can sit outside with a view of the garden and swimming pool by night while enjoying their favourite f lavoured shisha, or relax in air-conditioned comfort inside the restaurant. The signature dish is the Lebanese mixed grill served with the chef’s special sauce which is unique to Min Zaman and won’t be found anywhere else in the emirate. Each dish is delivered with a unique Arabic presentation, which adds to the authenticity of the restaurant. The atmosphere is relaxed, cosy and semiformal, while the décor is a chic coupling of ‘East meets West’. Marakesh Cuisine: Moroccan Themed after the red city in Morocco, Marakesh is a lively restaurant with a large capacity. Frescos painted on the walls, a red, cream and gold colour palette, date palms and window shutters set the scene, while nightly entertainment furthers the experience. The selection of dishes on buffet nights is extensive – at least 14 at Monday’s Ibn Battuta seafood night – so diners should show restraint with the enticing starters. This may not be so easy for the seafood lovers as a platter of prawns and other ocean delights greets them at the door. Those who hold out will be rewarded with mixed seafood tagine, grilled lobster, seafood thermidor and oyster provencal. Energetic entertainment by a belly dancer and Moroccan singer is held from 10.45pm until the early hours of the morning. Cedar Lounge Cuisine: Lebanese Fast becoming one of the city’s hottest dining destinations, Bain Al Jessrain (also known by its English name, Between the Bridges) is home to an increasing number of quality restaurants and bars. Among them is Cedar Lounge, a fine-dining Lebanese restaurant with a popular terrace overlooking the beach, waterway and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Those who want the prime position at the front of the terrace with the best views need to arrive early, but the atmosphere is pleasurable regardless of where you sit. On one side there is a water wall which flows into the shallow pools surrounding the terrace, while the other side is bordered by gardens. Signature dishes include raheb batenjen (chargrilled aubergine with onion, garlic, tomato, parsley and mint), arayess (minced lamb with onion, tomato, mint, pine nuts, chargrilled in Lebanese bread) and hommous Barouk (chickpea tahina dip with wild cucumber pickle, garlic, chopped parsley, olive oil and pine nuts). However, according to executive chef, Danny Kattar, “Guests do not come to a Lebanese restaurant for one specific dish. The original sweet For centuries, dates have been a source of nutrition and a symbol of hospitality in the Middle East

Love them or loathe them, dates are relished not just in the Middle East, but the world over. With their dark, waxy skin and soft, sweet flesh, dates were sold extensively along the trade routes of yesteryear and played an important role in the lives of the Arabian Bedouin, who relied on the fruit as a premium source of vitamin C, carbohydrate, fibre and potassium. Today, dates are used as a gesture of hospitality to greet guests, break the fast during Ramadan and as a sweet souvenir to take home to friends and family. Different varieties of dates vary in sweetness, size and softness, but the stage at which they are picked also greatly affects the resultant taste and texture. Balah is when the dates are still hard and have not ripened, but they are turning to yellow from green and are sweet. Rhutab is when the fruit has turned from yellow to brown, but is still not fully ripe. When the rhutab is dried, it becomes tamr. Dates are also classified according to their fleshiness: soft dates (barhee, halawy, medjool), semi-dry dates (dayri, noor, zahidi) and dry dates (thoory). The soft dates are rich in glucose and fructose, whereas the drier dates have a larger percentage of sucrose. Up to 80 percent of the date flesh is sugar.

Aside from their use as a fresh or dried fruit, with excellent storage capacity, dates are commonly used in confectionery items. Dates are mixed with Belgian chocolate to make date truffles, or marzipan, shortbread and pistachio to make fancy biscuits and other gourmet delicacies. There is even a date drink. Sparkling date juice, usually a combination of apple juice and date syrup, is a refreshing beverage served as a welcome drink and as a celebratory toast for special occasions and celebrations. Dhibs is the natural syrup that comes from dates. It was discovered centuries ago while harvesting when the pickers of the day filled their burlap-woven sacks with dates and noticed that the pressed dates at the bottom of the sack secreted a syrupy substance. Today, jam and honey made from date syrup, as well as sweets made with date sugar rather than cane sugar are popular regional desserts.

M a k e a d at e To appreciate the relevance of the date palm to the region, take a drive into the heart of the country and the garden city of Al Ain. The heritage heart of the emirate, Al Ain is built around no less than five date-producing oases – Al Ain, Al Jimi, Al Qattara, Al Hili and Al Mutaredh – which together cover five million square metres and sustain around 375,000 date palms, irrigated by the traditional falaj system.

Known as the ‘fruit of the desert’, dates are also a valuable source of nutrition. In the heyday of Bedouin tribal life, dates were served with camel’s milk as a complete standalone meal. The fruit contains almost every nutrient required by the human body and some modern dieticians recommend dates to reduce the risk of heart disease. As well as health benefits, dates have a religious significance and are mentioned in the Qu’ran and the Bible. Muslims use dates to break their fast during Ramadan because the fruit’s high sugar levels offer an immediate energy boost. Dates are common for daily consumption as well as for special occasions. For example, Indians traditionally give dates at Diwali as gifts to friends and family. Arabs buy larger platters of dates and related confectionary items, while Europeans tend to purchase smaller quantities, primarily for gift-giving. If you have a sweet tooth, sampling dates is a must on your list of things to do while in the region. But if you don’t have a sweet tooth, you probably have a friend who does and you’ve just found the sweetest gift to give.

If the thought of riding the world’s fastest rollercoaster has you trembling with excitement, then Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is the place for you. Opened in November 2010, the attraction is the only Ferrari theme park in the world and is brimming with high-octane rides and attractions to suit both thrillseekers and those looking for less scare. The world’s largest indoor theme park, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi has been built under a distinctive red roof designed in the style of a classic doublecurve body shell of a Ferrari GT. Among its 20 rides and attractions is the world’s fastest rollercoaster, Formula Rossa, which accelerates to 240kmh and emulates the feeling of being in a Ferrari F1 car with coasters designed to resemble the iconic red vehicle. Entertainment island Yas Island has become Abu Dhabi’s ultimate entertainment destination. Not only does it have the world’s only Ferrari theme park, the state-of-the-art Yas Marina Circuit and the stunning Yas Links golf course, it also hosts some of the planet’s biggest performers and entertainers. While some of the most recent stars to perform on the island include Snoop Dogg and Beady Eye, the lengthy list of entertainers includes Prince, Aerosmith, Guns N’ Roses, Nelly Furtado, Tiny Tempah, Kanye West, the Jonas Brothers, Shakira, Stevie Wonder, Jamiroquai, Corinne Bailey Rae, David Guetta, Eric Clapton and Tiësto, to name just a few. For a more relaxed luxury sporting activity Yas Island presents the first links course in the Middle East. The championship course on the western shores of Yas Island features floodlit practice ranges, as well as a golf academy and clubhouse. Yas Links course has rolling hills, seashore green locations and 130,000 new mangrove plants lining the island’s western coast. Specialist golf course architect Kyle Phillips has designed this unique course in keeping with the traditional form of links golf commonly associated with the coastal towns of Scotland and Ireland, while incorporating the landscape of the region. Yas Marina

One of Yas Island’s defining features is Yas Marina, a 142-berth facility capable of accommodating vessels ranging from 15 to 66 metres, with guest berthing for up to 120 metres. It is one of the most prestigious positions from which to watch the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and berths fill up quickly for this event each November. Yas Marina also hosts the annual Abu Dhabi Yacht Show, an exhibition showcasing luxurious super- and megayachts. This year’s event was held from March 24 to 26. Stars ‘N’ Bars Jumpstart the day with the ‘Brunch of Champions’, a tasty breakfast served at lunchtime.
