The species was prized for its scimitarshaped horns, which can reach more than a metre in length. There are more than 4,000 of these beautiful creatures roaming freely in the Arabian Wildlife Park on Sir Bani Yas Island, making it one of the world’s largest herds. Visitors can see the scimitar-horned oryx and many other endangered species on nature and wildlife drives through the wildlife park.

Al Ain National Museum The oldest museum in the UAE, Al Ain National Museum offers an overview of the country’s traditions and culture as well as the history of the people who inhabited the region up to 8,000 years ago. The museum is broken into two sections – ethnographical and archaeological – while a separate exhibit explains the history and construction of the falaj irrigation system, which was used for transporting and managing water using subterranean channels and was introduced to the region in the Iron Age. From here, there are many places to explore, such as the Liwa Oasis, one of the largest oases in Arabia and the birthplace of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family, the Al Nahyans. Liwa is the traditional home of the Bedouin society and visitors can see historical forts that were built in the 19th century. Another area to explore is the legendary Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter), one of the biggest sand deserts in the world and the largest in the Arabian Peninsula. Here visitors will find Tel Moreeb, the world’s tallest sand dune, which is more than 300 metres high and has a 50-degree incline. There are many activities to enjoy in the desert, such as a half-day safari which includes 4x4 driving through the golden dunes and watching an Arabian sunset. Other desert activities include riding an Arabian horse and exploring the beautiful surroundings on a desert nature walk. Just five minutes’ drive from the hotel is a camel race track and camel farms. These provide a unique opportunity to watch the traditional sport of camel racing. It is one of the main tourist attractions, as there are practice sessions in the mornings and late afternoons. During the day, the camels are free to roam through the desert, foraging and exercising. While here, I suggest visitors try Arabic sweets and coffee, which are a significant part of the Bedouin culture and a sign of the famous Arabian hospitality. For something a little more substantial, Al Badiya Restaurant offers a selection of contemporary and regional cuisine, while visitors can try different flavoured shisha at Al Liwan. capital ambition Abu Dhabi is carving a name for itself as a world-class hub for arts, culture and heritage. At its heart will be the much-anticipated Saadiyat Island with high-profile museums, galleries, performing arts centres and a host of enticing visitor attractions

The largest of seven emirates to make up the UAE, Abu Dhabi is an emerging destination for travellers who want to explore the culture and traditions of the Middle East in five-star comfort. Like the neighbouring emirate of Dubai, the nation’s capital has invested billions into world-class, internationally renowned projects such as Yas Island, Al Raha Beach and Central Market, helping to attract millions of visitors from around the globe every year. One of the next major developments, and undoubtedly one of the most eagerly awaited, is Saadiyat Island, developed by TDIC (Tourism Development and Investment Company). Located 500m off the coast of Abu Dhabi, this multi-faceted destination, whose name translates to island of happiness, is home to seven key districts: the Cultural District, Beach, Retreat, Marina, Promenade, Reserve and Lagoons. The districts will incorporate a buzzing business hub, waterfront residences, luxury spa facilities, a pristine beachfront and a focal point for sport, such as the Gulf’s first tidal and ocean golf courses. A five-minute drive from downtown Abu Dhabi, Saadiyat will also be the only place in the world that is home to architecture designed by five Pritzker prize winners including the Louvre Abu Dhabi, which will display art, manuscripts and objects of historical, cultural and sociological significance, and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, which is scheduled to open in 2014 and will present a collection of the most important artistic achievements of our time. Saadiyat, which will be a cultural hub for arts aficionados, is poised to become a key attraction for Abu Dhabi and one of the most desirable destinations in the world.

Cultural magnet Alongside the Louvre Abu Dhabi and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi in the Cultural District will be the Zayed National Museum. This fascinating centre will tell the story of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, his unification of the UAE, the history of the region and its cultural connections across the world. There will also be the Performing Arts Centre, home to music, dance and theatre. For more information on these cultural centres visit the Saadiyat Cultural District Exhibition at Emirates Palace. The permanent exhibition showcases the architectural designs, models and concepts behind the museums and is open daily from 10am to 10pm. Entry is free of charge.

Manarat Al Saadiyat is another highlight of the Cultural District. This purpose-built 15,400sq m visitor centre houses international exhibitions from around the world in three galleries. These are the Abu Dhabi Arts Gallery, a permanent space for a series of exhibitions and educational programmes, the Universal Gallery and the Central Events Gallery. Manarat Al Saadiyat will also house a 250-seat theatre and restaurants. While visiting the centre, be sure to take time to go through the Saadiyat Story exhibition, an interactive and entertaining display showcasing the island and its development, and enjoy a bite to eat at Al Fanr restaurant afterwards. Next to the Cultural District is Saadiyat Beach. This 9km arc of white sand will be home to dune grasses and nesting turtles. It will feature private and public beach clubs, such as the newly opened Monte-Carlo Beach Club, and offer a host of sport and recreational facilities, state-of-the-art gymnasiums, day spas and pool access. A championship golf course designed by Gary Player, Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, opened in 2009. The Beach District will also boast nine five-star hotels and international resorts. So far these include the Middle East’s first St. Regis hotel and the Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi, both set to open later this year. There will also be a Shangri-La, a Mandarin Oriental and a Rotana hotel. Other properties and operators are yet to be announced. Next to Saadiyat Beach to the north is the most secluded point of the island, Saadiyat Retreat. A haven of peace and tranquility, this ‘island within an island’ will hide an exclusive range of intimate boutique hotels and shoreline homes.

Array of attractions In stark contrast, on the southwest coast will be Saadiyat Marina, the island’s commercial heart. This will feature colourful cafés, boutique arcades and a glittering nightlife as well as designer apartments, upscale hotels and elegant waterfront restaurants. The district will also be home to traditional dhow boats, positioned on an ultramodern business bay. The cosmopolitan, self-contained marina will have berthing for more than 1,000 vessels. Next to the Marina is Saadiyat Promenade. This colourful, downtown waterfront hub for families and young couples will offer a mix of contemporary homes, hotels, shops, modern cafés and restaurants all fringed by a pretty beachfront, linked by picturesque boardwalks. The Promenade is a place to while away the day, order that third scoop of ice cream and lose yourself in a sunny seaside market. With its coastal ambience, laidback resorts, family entertainment facilities and tourist attractions, the Promenade is expected to be a magnet for regional and international visitors.

Saadiyat Lagoons, meanwhile, which stretches from the island’s northeast coast to its southern central region, combines modern home living with a tidal lagoon system, inviting a leisurely boating lifestyle. Here beautiful homes will be nestled on the banks of tiny islets, offering residents immediate access to a network of idyllic waterways, encompassing a beautiful canal system and the open Arabian Gulf. Finally, Saadiyat Reserve, located on the island´s southeast coast, will be a sustainable environment of natural wetlands, lush mangrove sanctuaries and free-flowing waterways, dotted with luxury homes and boutique hotels. Developer TDIC has worked hard to ensure that the development does not impinge on the surrounding environment.
Its mangrove forests are in an entirely protected sanctuary and not one plant has been removed. It is also home to a native mangrove forest and sanctuary, breakthrough environmental initiatives, as well as the region’s first championship tidal golf course. The Saadiyat Reserve Golf Club will be designed by Robert Trent Jones II, one of the world’s premier golf course architecture firms. It is a 72-par, 18-hole course that centres around the network of tidal waters, which contribute to its constantly changing topography so players discover a different game every time they tee off. Positioned within a natural sanctuary of mangrove forests and waterways, the state-of-the-art club creates a new benchmark in golf-course design.

Don’t be surprised to find that everything that glitters at this indoor market is in fact gold. The sheer volume of the precious metal on display – as well as the intricate patterns and detailed work of the pieces – is nothing short of dazzling, making this a must-visit place, even if you aren’t in the market for a purchase. Keep an eye out for traditional – and incredibly elaborate – Arabic wedding sets, however there are also classic Western designs for those searching for understated elegance. Located beside Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre in Fourth Street, there are more than 100 shops selling gold jewellery as well as diamond and pearl creations and all at lower prices thanks to the lack of tax. The price fluctuates according to the international daily gold rate with extra added for craftsmanship. It’s a good idea to check the daily gold price with your hotel concierge before visiting, so you have a better idea of what you should be paying. Also, don’t be shy to negotiate a lower price; it’s part of the local culture and an expected part of the transaction process. Nader El Kari, the chief concierge at the InterContinental Abu Dhabi, advises his guests to visit more than one shop
before they start bargaining. “Don’t go into one shop only. You have to bargain and visit different shops until you find a price that fits your budget.” Choose from rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, bangles, brooches and more in 18, 21, 22 and 24 carats, but if you can’t find what you’re looking for, why not ask to have it made? You will easily gain inspiration from the shelves and glass cabinets stocked to the brim with sparkling diamonds, lustrous pearls and gold in all colours. Or, if an investment is what you’re looking for, purchase gold ingots to take home. El Kari says Abu Dhabi is also a great place to buy secondhand high-end watches. “There are some shops that sell watches as well as gold. In Abu Dhabi, the local people like to change their watches regularly, just as they change their cars. They will buy a watch, keep it for three to six months and then sell it for 60% less,” he explains. If time is limited, visitors can also find an enormous array of jewellery shops in the city’s malls, including some of the region’s biggest and most renowned retailers Damas and Rivoli as well as international brands such as Cartier and Tiffany & Co.

Treasures of The DeeP Dive into Abu Dhabi’s turquoise waters and get up close and personal with the Arabian Gulf’s rich marine life
Q Imagine gliding effortlessly beneath the warm, crystal-clear waters of the Arabian Gulf. A sea turtle meanders past and you marvel at its size and grace underwater. A shoal of barracuda dart above your head and the silver, shimmering bodies of the fish reflect the bright sunlight filtering through the water’s surface overhead. As you near a coral reef you glimpse sea anemones waving gently in the current, concealing brightly coloured reef fish and seahorses in their feathery tentacles. You spy lobsters in between the rocky crevices and a plump star fish nestling on the sandy seabed below. Everywhere you look the water is teaming with exotic marine life. Sound like a dream? It’s not – it’s all here, just waiting to be discovered in the shallow waters off the coast of Abu Dhabi. Ever since renowned French underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau invented the aqualung (which formed the basis of today’s hi-tech scuba equipment), scuba diving has become a popular activity enjoyed by people of all ages around the world, but especially by those in warmer climes. Abu Dhabi’s bountiful year-round sunshine means the water temperature is suitable for diving any time, even in the winter months.

A common misconception is that scuba diving can only be enjoyed by the young and athletic, however people of almost any age can enjoy this activity, provided they are in a reasonable state of health. With the hot summer weather still upon us, now is the perfect time to seek solace in the cool waters of the Arabian Gulf and discover the hidden treasures of the deep. While scuba diving in the UAE may not have quite reached the internationally renowned standards of Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, the Maldives or the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, there are still some fantastic dive sites to be found just off the UAE’s coastline where you can marvel at sunken wrecks, shoals of tropical reef fish, dolphins and sleek manta rays. Diving in the Emirates is generally divided into two categories. The East Coast offers diving in the Gulf of Oman, part of the Indian Ocean, and comprises popular dive spots such as Khor Fakkhan, Dibba and Musandam.
It is possible to enjoy year-round diving in Abu Dhabi, although the water temperature in winter can get down to 15 degrees Celsius and in August it can reach 38 degrees in the first few metres

The West Coast, meanwhile, involves diving in the balmy Arabian Gulf and incorporates the neighbouring emirates of Abu Dhabi and Dubai. These two UAE coastlines may be geographically close to one another but offer very different scuba diving experiences. All too often visitors head to the East Coast without ever discovering the dive sites to the west of the country, but if you know where to go on the West Coast then you’re in for a real underwater thrill, as little as one mile off Abu Dhabi’s shoreline. “Dive off the coast of Abu Dhabi and you’ll see
a wide variety of colourful, tropical fish year-round, such as angel fish, butterfly fish, snappers, groupers and plenty of other reef-dwelling creatures,” says Abu Dhabi-based Greg Heinricks from Arabian Divers and Sportfishing Charters. “One of our best underwater attractions here is shipwreck diving, much of which can be found at regular diving depths of between 18 and 30 metres, although there are smaller wrecks lying in just 10 metres of water that can be found as little as three or four miles off the coast,” he adds.

Popular local wreck dive sites include Jasem, a wreck about 35 miles off the Abu Dhabi coast in about 26 metres of water. Divers should have an advanced open water certificate to do the wreck dive. Expect to see shoals of barracudas. Loadwing is another good, small wreck dive relatively nearby. Both of these wrecks are well established dive sites and have been underwater for several years, so the marine life around them is abundant. The diving off Abu Dhabi tends to be fairly shallow – often around 10 to 15 metres – but despite the shallow depths, there’s still an abundance of colourful sea life and reef fish. And the best bit? Scuba diving in the Gulf is possible all year round. “It is possible to enjoy year-round diving in Abu Dhabi, although the water temperature during the winter months can get down to 15 degrees Celsius and in August it can reach a Jacuzzi-like 38 degrees Celsius in the first few metres,” adds Heinricks. “From April to the end of July the water temperature is very pleasant with
comfortable conditions, which means it is a good time to learn if you’re a beginner.” Abu Dhabi’s Breakwater and natural islands contribute to the calm water conditions. “There’s a natural lagoon area just off the coast of the city which is ideal for learning in,” says Heinricks. Those looking to break into the wonderful world of scuba can complete a diving course at any of Abu Dhabi’s PADI-certified dive centres. Courses usually involve sessions in a swimming pool before venturing out into the ocean. Many centres also offer try-dives, so budding divers can get a taste of scuba before committing to a course. There is also a range of options for experienced divers who want to further their skills. So if you’re looking for an exciting opportunity to swim with tropical fish and discover the mysteries of the deep, or are a seasoned diver looking to add another destination to your log book, scuba diving in Abu Dhabi is a fun way to spice up your stay here. amalfi An established restaurant on the city’s dining scene, Amalfi serves dishes from all regions of Italy in a relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant is light and airy during the day thanks to the large windows, which also give great views outside. In the cooler months, diners can sit on the terrace which overlooks the pool area. For added intimacy, there is a private dining room. Italian chef Massimiliano Sperli is from Rome and has worked his way through Italian kitchens around Europe for the past 20 years. He recommends the sea bass skewered with rosemary and sundried tomatoes or the fresh squid ink pasta. Being an Italian restaurant, there is a good selection of wines – most from Italy – to complement the dishes. Amalfi is a restaurant for lovers of Italian food. The meal starts with a basket of fresh bread and a selection of spreads and tapenades, but the choice of starters and mains is so tempting, restraint will need to be practised to preserve the appetite. There is a fine selection of carpaccio and antipasti for starters, while the mains are classically Italian. Chef Cristiano Goattin recommends pear and gorgonzola ravioli, cured beef carpaccio from Valtellina with arugula salad, and risotto with fresh asparagus and black truffle, made with artisanal rice from Verona, northern Italy. The dishes are complemented by the extensive selection of wine, which mostly comes from Italy and France. Be sure to save room for dessert as it comes highly recommended. For many people, the best part of a meal is the dessert and regardless of the cuisine, there’s bound to be a selection of decadent sweets to savour and enjoy. Arabic desserts come in all shapes and colours, and their history, while not that well documented, can be traced back through time and across many countries. As with any culinary fare, traditional Arabic desserts feature ingredients that were readily available in the area centuries ago and commonly contain nuts, cream, milk and sweet soft cheese as well as lashings of syrup. Some dishes also have an interesting story behind their origins. Umm Ali, a milky Egyptian dessert, for instance, means ‘mother of Ali’ in English, but who is Ali and why is there a dish named after his mother? There are conflicting stories about its past. Some say a sultan was hunting in the Nile Delta and stopped at a village because he was hungry. He asked for the village’s best cook, Umm Ali, to prepare a meal for him, but the only ingredients she had

were some dried wheat flakes, sultanas, nuts and coconut, which she covered with milk and sugar before baking. Legend has it that the sultan was so impressed that when he next visited he asked for ‘Umm Ali’s dessert’. Other stories suggest that Umm Ali was the first wife of Sultan Ezz El Din Aybek, but when he died, there was a dispute with his second wife over whose son would be the successor. In Egypt, women were not entitled to rule, but were allowed to be the guardians over their sons, until he became king. Legend has it that Umm Ali hatched a plan to kill the heavily guarded second wife and bribed her maids to beat her to death with her own slippers. To celebrate the death, she made this dessert and distributed it to the people.

Another dessert with a disputed history is baklava. Many countries, including Greece, Turkey and Lebanon, claim this dish of puff/ filo pastry, pine nuts, pistachios and syrup as their own. There is evidence tracing baklava to the 8th century BC when the Assyrians baked thin layers of dough with nuts, poured honey over it and enjoyed it on special occasions. Further research suggests the recipe was perfected during the reign of the Ottoman Empire when chefs were brought in from Armenia, Greece, Persia, Egypt, Syria and occasionally Serbia, Hungary and France to cook in the palaces and kitchens of the wealthy. Regardless of where the desserts originate, one thing is certain: they are a must-try while you’re visiting the emirate. Just be sure to do extra laps around the malls to burn off all the calories.

If the thought of riding the world’s fastest rollercoaster has you trembling with excitement, then Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is the place for you. Opened in November 2010, the attraction is the only Ferrari theme park in the world and is brimming with high-octane rides and attractions to suit both thrillseekers and those looking for less scare. The world’s largest indoor theme park, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi has been built under a distinctive red roof designed in the style of a classic doublecurve body shell of a Ferrari GT. Among its 20 rides and attractions is the world’s fastest rollercoaster, Formula Rossa, which accelerates to 240kmh and emulates the feeling of being in a Ferrari F1 car with coasters designed to resemble the iconic red vehicle. Entertainment island Yas Island has become Abu Dhabi’s ultimate entertainment destination. Not only does it have the world’s only Ferrari theme park, the state-of-the-art Yas Marina Circuit and the stunning Yas Links golf course, it also hosts some of the planet’s biggest performers and entertainers. One of Yas Island’s defining features is Yas Marina, a 142-berth facility capable of accommodating vessels ranging from 15 to 66 metres, with guest berthing for up to 120 metres. It is one of the most prestigious positions from which to watch the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and berths fill up quickly for this event each November. Yas Marina also hosts the annual Abu Dhabi Yacht Show, an exhibition showcasing luxurious super- and megayachts. This year’s event was held from March 24th to 26th. Kazu Combining fine Japanese cuisine withYas Island views, Kazu is one restaurant that should be at the top of any Asian food lover’s list. The bamboo feature walls and wooden furniture suggest a modern approach, while the brown leather menu features all the traditional fare plus a few house specialities. Smoking shisha (hubbly bubbly) is very popular in Abu Dhabi. The Middle Eastern water pipe, which is thought to have originated around 500 years ago, purifies and cools the smoke from flavoured tobacco heated on top of the pipe by coals. It costs approximately AED35 to AED50 to smoke and the most popular flavours are apple, mint, strawberry, apricot and grape. Although relaxing and sociable, estimates suggest that an hour of shisha smoking equates to inhaling as many as 50 cigarettes. If you’re after an authentic taste of Middle Eastern culture, however, smoking shisha is a must. Just remember not to inhale too deeply, blow down the pipe to get rid of smoke build-up in the water and share your shisha among friends. This is a social tradition and to be enjoyed in groups or couples.
