PLANET OCEAN "Standing on the Moon looking back at Earth – this lovely place you just came from – you see all the colours, and you know what they represent. Having left the water planet, with all that water brings to the Earth in terms of colour and abundant life, the absence of water and atmosphere on the desolate surface of the Moon gives rise to a stark contrast." – Buzz Aldrin, astronaut

Amid the high-speed action and high-profile spectators (many of whom have jetted from around the globe for the event) it’s easy to forget the humble beginnings of F1. Turn to page 94 for a brief history of this multibillion-dollar motorsport. But if rubber-burning fun isn’t on your holiday itinerary, there’s plenty to keep you occupied on these sunny shores. From horse riding and camel racing to spa pampering and retail therapy, Dubai has something to suit every traveller.

Experience A day of spa pampering

Don’t know where Swedish starts and shiatsu ends? A few days in Dubai will fix that. With an array of first-rate spas, such as the Mandara Spa at The Monarch Dubai, this is the ideal city to indulge in some five-star pampering. Whether you’re keen on massages, facials, scrubs or wraps, there’s a treatment to suit every type of traveller. You can call individual hotels for details or turn to page 108 for a list of hotels and resorts, most with in-house spa facilities.

When people are visiting on business they don’t always have time to experience Dubai’s tourist scene. However, there are plenty of activities that give you a slice of Dubai life without eating into busy schedules. The Big Bus Tours covers old and new Dubai in just two hours. During the day, this hop-on, hop-off facility with a guided commentary allows one to visit all the must-see places such as Dubai Museum and Palm Jumeirah. If time is limited to evenings, I recommend booking in for a nighttime desert safari (turn to page 116 for details). This offers the ultimate Middle Eastern experience, from dune bashing and camel rides to henna painting and belly dancing. Eating alone can be daunting, so for a bite to eat try Souk Al Bahar near The Dubai Mall. The dining options are endless and the views of The Dubai Fountain are so stunning, you’ll soon forget you’re dining solo. For photograph opportunities, the Dubai International Financial Centre is amazing. The futuristic architecture looks really effective by night. If you have a weekend free, the Hajar Mountains, located 100km south of Dubai city, is one of the region’s beauty spots. Four-wheel drive vehicles are the best way to explore, so if you don’t have access to a sturdy car, speak to your hotel concierge about hiring a tour guide.

Snapshot Hidden treasures From magnificent skyscrapers to manmade islands, Dubai has become known for its larger-than-life developments. But while the dramatic views of Dubai Marina, Palm Jumeriah and Sheikh Zayed Road are extraordinary sights, if you’re looking to get away from the contemporary side of the city, there are many less ostentatious spots to discover. With Islam as its official religion, it’s only natural that Dubai is abundant with mosques – the traditional place of worship for Muslims. The distinctive minarets, which rise like towers from the top of the buildings, can be spotted across the city skyline, adding cultural flavour to the otherwise ultra-modern landscape. Al Farooq Omar bin Al Khittab Mosque, in the suburb of Umm Suqeim near Jumeirah, opened its doors to the public for the first time earlier this year. Newly built and known for its decorative mihrabs (ornamentally embellished indoor prayer areas), Al Farooq Omar bin Al Khittab Mosque is one of only a few mosques in the UAE open to non-Muslims , so it’s definitely one to add to your tourist trail. 18

TAG Heuer The Carrera Heritage Collection In 1963, inspired by the sport of motor racing, Jack W. Heuer started work on a new chronograph specifically designed for motorracing enthusiasts. A year in the making, the mechanical, manual-wound chronograph was aptly named after the Carrera Panamericana, a five-day, 3,300-kilometre race across Mexico. This inspirational timepiece has evolved over the decades, with new editions and innovations adding to its appeal. This year, TAG Heuer released the Carrera Heritage Collection. With a big nod to the golden age of watchmaking and celebrating 150 years of horological tradition, everything from the exquisite engraving to the raised numerals is historically accurate. Several options are available, including stainless steel, gold and rose gold, all with crystal sapphire case backs, showing the cogs and wheels of the movement inside.

Hublot Formula 1 King Power Ceramic

The first collaboration between master watchmakers Armin Strom and Marussia Virgin Racing team is a series of three custom-built timepieces in the racing stable’s team colours – black, red and white. Fashioned from the same components and materials as the engine parts of Formula One racing cars, these titanium marvels are crafted with automatic winding, chronograph functions and a power reserve of 46 hours.

After the success of the F1 King Power Tourbillion, it’s no surprise that Hublot’s latest creation has proved a speedy success with racing enthusiasts. Unveiled at the 2011 Formula 1 UBS Chinese Grand Prix, this premier timepiece is built from ceramic and boasts hour, minute and second counters, making it the perfect device for timing rubber-burning circuit laps. You’ll need to be quick off the mark to get your hands on this one because the King Power Ceramic is a limited edition, with only 500 numbered pieces up for grabs.

Graham Silverstone Tourbillograph Full Black

4

5

6

According to its creators, ‘If the Silverstone Tourbillograph Full Black were a character, it would be wearing a bespoke dinner jacket and drinking a glass of Champagne.’ Four years in the making, the engineering behind this unmistakably masculine timepiece has put an end to the intrinsic weaknesses often associated with tourbillions. No longer fragile, the reduced number of components, lightness and double-bridge construction guarantees stability and perfect rigidity. Likewise, sensitivity to magnetism has also been reduced through the systematic use of iron-free components. The winning combination of style and technology means that this sophisticated model is not only beautiful, but has all the resistance of a military watch.

B.R.M Triroto A favourite with F1 enthusiasts, the Triroto, designed by Bernard Richards Manufacture, features a unique device that protects the watch’s movement during intense acceleration. The mechanism’s principle is to absorb the kinetic energy through three small rotors. The smaller keep the principle rotor in place and as a result, absorb movements that might be caused by intense acceleration.

Saint Honore Orsay Black Racing The epitome of Parisian style, F1 racing driver Paul Belmondo seemed the obvious choice as brand ambassador for French fashion house Saint Honore. Known for his sense of style and love of luxury, Belmondo has brought a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ to the brand and the recent collaboration has resulted in the limited-edition Orsay Black Racing.

Blancpain Super Trofeo Chronograph Take the world’s oldest watchmaker, pair it with one of the most iconic car brands on the planet and what do you have? The Blancpain Super Trofeo Chronograph. While some motor-inspired timepieces are simply logo-laden limited editions, Blancpain has gone the extra mile with its collaboration. Forging a deep working alliance with Lamborghini, the partnership has resulted in an exceptional automobile championship. Played out over six events per year, the Super Trofeo stars a field of 30 Lamborghini Gallardos and to celebrate these outstanding races, Blancpain has produced the Super Trofeo Chronograph, a sporting watch with a product run limited to 300 per year.

Bulgari Inspired by the palatial landscapes of the Mediterranean, Bulgari’s fine silk satin scarves pay homage to the vivid architecture of the 15th century Italian Renaissance gardens. The classic Bulgari motif is blended with flowers, forests and fountains to create a truly unique selection, which oozes Mediterranean appeal. Drape one of these richly hued pieces over a black gown for maximum impact. Buy: The Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates and BurJuman.

Emilio Pucci

Hermès

It’s over half a century since the late fashion designer Emilio Pucci, aka ‘The Prince of Prints’, first began crafting his legendary patterns and textiles. A distinctive mixture of swirls and shades set this unique label apart from other brands and today the fashion house’s creations are as captivating as ever. The new Emilio Pucci autumn/winter collection showcases a variety of vibrant silk neck scarves. The vivid patterns and clashing colours, which are so characteristic of Pucci, are a true lesson in on-trend tones. Buy: The Dubai Mall, Harvey Nichols at Mall of the Emirates.

Worn in varying degrees of flair by characters as diverse as Queen Elizabeth II, Audrey Hepburn and Madonna, the Hermès scarf is an iconic staple piece. One of the most recent creations to spring from the beloved Parisian fashion house is the Jungle Love silk twill carré. The outcome of a long and fruitful collaboration between Hermès and French artist Robert Dallet, Jungle Love is light-hearted, lightweight and full of fun. Playing on Dallet’s passion for drawing and love of wildlife, it offers a tender view of two powerful wildcats in an amorous display. Buy: The Dubai Mall and BurJuman.

Ralph Lauren says, “I have always loved the glamour and sophistication of the 1930s and its Art Deco Chinoiserie influences.” Follow his lead and inject some glamour into your wardrobe with this latest diverse assortment of scarves. From chic, cool-weather accessories fashioned from sumptuous shearling and velvet to lighter Asian-inspired pieces made from delicate silk, there’s no excuse for leaving your collar uncovered this season. Buy: The Dubai Mall, BurJuman and Mall of the Emirates.

Carolina Herrera It’s flower power all the way for Carolina Herrera. Rich in detail and explosive in colour, the style maven’s latest offering of silk scarves takes a huge leap away from her usual linear creations. A nod to the florals that have dominated this season’s catwalks, the flowery prints are perfect for amping up a white shirt, day or night. Buy: The Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Festival City and Mirdiff City Centre.

Pentax Q Admittedly, it’s mildly reminiscent of something you might have carted round in the ’80s, but don’t be fooled by the Pentax Q’s retro appearance. This tiny addition to the Micro Four Third family is the world’s smallest, lightest interchangeable lens system camera. As well as offering users comprehensive lens selection, this mini marvel possesses a full HD movie recording function and has a body made of magnesium-alloy, making it a heavy-duty snapper.

Samsung Galaxy S 11 The successor to one of the most popular Android handsets to date, the Samsung Galaxy S11 carries a burden of expectation, almost as sizeable as its 4.3-inch SuperAmoled Plus screen. Fortunately, we’re pleased to report it doesn’t disappoint. Thinner (125.3x66.1mm), lighter (116g) and faster (the processor runs at a speed of 1.2GHz), this slinky new smartphone lives up to the hype.

6

Archos 35 smart home phone Home phones are tech dinosaurs, right? Wrong. The new Archos 35 smart home phone has taken inspiration from its more portable relations and picked up some skills worthy of even the swankiest mobile handsets. Its 3.5-inch touchscreen is home to Android, which means that it can browse the web over Wi-Fi, run applications such as YouTube and make video calls from its frontfacing camera. Plus, just like your mobile, it has caller name, number and photo display and customisable MP3 ringtones. Granted, you can’t slip it in your bag for a night on the town, but you’ll be proud to leave it on your coffee table.

B&W Zeppelin Musos, the next few lines will be music to your ears. Apple has joined forces with hi-fi gurus Bowers & Wilkins to produce the Zeppelin, an iPod docking station that not only looks great, but can fill a room with

crisp, deep stereo sounds. The secret is all in the unusual shape; the lengthy form means each drive unit is placed in its optimum position, which results in musical detail that you’d never previously have believed possible from an iPod.

iBike Dash CC The revolutionary iBike Dash CC makes use of the full computer functionality of your iPhone or iPod Touch, to deliver a truly amazing bicycle dashboard. Tracking your speed, power, heart rate, calories, time, elevation and wind speed, this wireless computer system is a virtual co-pilot, navigator and black box all in one.

10

MacBook Air With the latest Intel Core i5 and Core i7 dualcore processors, the new MacBook Air is up to twice as fast as the previous generation and has all the power you need for editing photos and movies, making face-time calls, playing games and working with documents and presentations. Plus, this nifty notebook also features a backlit keyboard that uses a sensor to automatically detect a change in ambient lighting and adjusts the brightness for your environment.

AS SHARP AS THE TAILOR’S NEEDLE The roots of today’s Western business suit can be traced back more than 200 years to London. Now, the traditions and expertise of that city’s Savile Row are available in Dubai for discerning dressers

Q Words by SCOTT BIRCH

Does it take you five hours to get dressed, or do you insist on cleaning your footwear with fine Champagne? If the answer to both is a resounding ‘no’, but you do wear a business suit, at least you have one thing in common with the godfather of modern garb, Mr Beau Brummell. If the name sounds oddly familiar, that’s because the British dandy’s moniker has been immortalised in popular culture from ballads to the big screen. In the 1800s, Brummell popularised the full-length trousers, jacket and neck tie ensemble that has over the years morphed into the modern suits we see and wear today. At the time, his radical dress sense and attention to grooming etiquette may have made Brummell an oddity, but few these days would argue with his belief in bathing daily (though some might doubt his usage of Champagne).

Looking good in a suit is so much easier when you go for the right cut, the best cloth and appropriate style for your shape. Dubai has a long tradition of fine bespoke tailoring and there are dozens of reputable craftsmen to be found, especially around the Textile Souk in Bur Dubai and Karama. However, in recent years the sartorial stakes have been upped in the emirate with an influx of high-end tailors opening bespoke boutiques, which cater to a plethora of well-heeled residents and

executive guests. The suitmaking skills now available are impressive. The word ‘bespoke’ originates from the 17th century. Once a gentleman had chosen his preferred cloth, it had ‘been spoken for’. It is also important to stress the distinction between ‘bespoke’ and ‘made-to-measure’. Bespoke clothing does not use an existing pattern and is created from scratch to your size and taste. Made-to-measure, on the other hand, means that suits are adjusted from an existing template. While this can be sufficient, bespoke is best.

Dubai’s finest With 40 years in the business, Leonard Logsdail was the youngest tailor to have a workshop on London’s famous Savile Row. Now that expert touch is available in Dubai at the Logsdail London atelier in Al Quoz (04 3233148). There are three levels of service available. An off-the-rack suit, which can be altered to fit, will cost around AED4,000. Next is a bespoke suit measured in Dubai and created according to your preference of style and fabric, which will cost

around AED9,000. Top of the range is the Signature Suit which will be measured, cut and fit by Logsdail himself, flying in and out from New York. This level of attention and expertise will see you pay around AED17,500 to look a million dollars. Ascots & Chapels (04 4270124) has a proud history dating back to 1871 and recently opened three bespoke outlets here in Dubai: at Souk Al Bahar, Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and Dubai Marina Mall. As well as

visiting these stores, Ascots & Chapels has a travelling tailor service whereby they can come direct to your hotel room. The tailors also make regular trips around the world and appointments can be made to see them in your home country. Made2Measure (04 3942244) is a high-end bespoke tailor in Jumeirah that also sells handmade shoes and accessories. Priding itself on fine craftsmanship and service, the stylish villa setting makes for a relaxed retail experience. Situated on Plaza Level at Jumeirah Beach Residences, Savile Row (04 4233813) is another tailor that offers a high-end service. Well positioned at DIFC, Bespoke (04 3637237) crafts suits, shirts and accessories for a predominantly business clientele.

Made to measure If you don’t have the time or resources for a bespoke suit, many gents’ high-end fashion brands offer a made-to-measure service. Dunhill is known the world over for men’s apparel and accessories, a range that was originally conceived by Alfred Dunhill to accompany the booming motor industry. Having dropped the ‘Alfred’ and undergone something of a rebranding in the last decade, Dunhill is again viewed as a wardrobe staple for the discerning gentleman. Ready-to-wear suits, shirts and trousers are available in store, but there is also a made-to-measure service offering a great deal of options, from lapel size to number of buttons. Two styles can be adapted: the classic St James or the slim-fit Belgravia. Prices for a made-to-measure suit start from around AED8,000 with an eight-week delivery time. Celebrating its centenary last year, luxury Italian menswear brand Ermenegildo Zegna offers ready-to-wear and

made-to-measure suits of quality. The fabrics you’ll find in a Zegna store are not available anywhere else and this is part of the brand’s enduring appeal. Specialising in classic business suits that stand the test of time, Zegna mixes the ethos of a family business with a global reach. With edgy ready-to-wear collections and a made-to-measure Abito Privato service, Italian brand Pal Zileri offers something slightly different. Design f lourishes and practical detailing are combined with unusual, quality fabrics to create a more personalised, signature suit with style.

Bounty and the beach Concierge uncovers some of the best dining options next to sand and sea

Q Words by scott birch

Beach Bar & Grill In some ways, the only thing that doesn’t do Beach Bar & Grill justice is its name. Sounding like a casual surfers’ café, the culinary truth is far different, with a menu dedicated to some of the finest fresh produce on the planet. Visit in the evening for dinner and enjoy a walk through the pristine grounds of the One&Only Royal Mirage. Tranquil and sophisticated, this stroll sets the tone for the meal ahead. Whether you’re dining indoors, out on the terrace or down in the private beach pavilions, the décor and ambience seamlessly blend casual with formal – so while the seating and table settings might be simple, the service and attention to detail is polished to perfection. While most beach bars rely a picture postcard view, Beach Bar & Grill wins plaudits for the fine menu. For a light starter, try the selection of Arabic mezze, consisting of hommous, fattoush, baba ganoush, brilliant moutabel and an inventive Moroccan carrot salad – all served with labneh and pita bread. Another must-try is ‘The Beach’ platter. The restaurant’s sumptuous signature dish is served on a tray of crushed ice and the poached half Maine lobster, juicy prawns, smoked salmon, mud crab and oysters are perfect for sharing. For mains there is a winning selection of fish, seafood and meaty grills that should keep everyone content. Baked whole hammour is a popular choice, as are the prime cuts of fillet and sirloin from all corners of the globe. However, our favourite is the Portuguese seafood cataplana – a hearty stew of clams, mussels, prawns, scallops, crab and beef chorizo in a smoky, herby broth. With food this good, it’s easy to forget you are sitting on a stretch of pristine sand with sparkling views over the Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Marina’s towers behind. Beach dining bliss. Shimmers Few places in Dubai can match this littleknown beach restaurant for surroundings and atmosphere. With its secluded setting, among the palm trees on the beach, and spectacular view of the Burj Al Arab and Madinat Jumeirah, Shimmers shines at night. Blessed with a multitude of dining options, here is a culinary gem made for romantic diners who like to share shisha on majlis-style seating, down on the sand. The menu is relatively simple and quite snacky in essence; soups, wraps, sandwiches and pasta make up the bulk of the bill of fare. But while the dishes aren’t complex, they’re they’re extremely well done. The tasty barbecued delights are not to be missed and there is also a new afternoon tea option that has been introduced. A selection of delicious pastries and sweets are on offer with an extensive range of fine tea blends. This venue is a popular choice during the day, but it’s also a great place for evening diners who like to frequent the beach during sundown. Wavebreaker Located on a prime beach strip, the Hilton Dubai Jumeirah is another established property that has benfitted greatly from the emergence of ‘New Dubai’. The hotel now enjoys a fabulous location at the heart of The Walk – Dubai’s coast-hugging outdoor shopping and dining destination. Wavebreaker is a relaxed dining and drinking spot that ticks all of the boxes. The dress code is beach chic, the menu is simple, the location is right next to the shore and overlooking the Palm, Jumeirah. Busy by day serving the hotel’s poolloving guests, at night the tempo drops to provide a welcome respite from hectic bars and stuffy restaurants, while the lush gardens surrounding the venue add a touch of tropical flavour. The menu is mainly made up of burgers, sandwiches and shisha, and we recommend the spicy kofta meatballs, which are second to none. Quite a sprawling venue, Wavebreaker has ample dining tables and even a pool table for those who fancy a game. If you are looking to avoid the crowds on The Walk or fancy a postbeach quencher and some comfort food, Wavebreaker is just the place. Barasti At times, it’s hard to explain to visitors the enduring appeal of Barasti. Other beach bars have come and gone over the years and while finer places exist, none are as popular as this relaxed beach-side haunt. Of course, the development of Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence has no doubt helped, but Barasti has taken the whole concept of a laidback sundowner destination, with a sideline in bar food, and made it its own in Dubai. Weekends are a particularly busy affair at Barasti and the party gets started early with revelers enjoying brunch and afternoon drinks, so be well prepared if you are intending to dine. The lively atmosphere is bolstered by live DJs, theme nights and drinks promotions, which run throughout the week. Recently, more of a lounge area has been added, with relaxed sofas and moody lighting giving the bar a more upmarket appearance. On the food front, expect the expected, but with some five-star flourishes. For instance, the Barasti fish and chips comes with a tasty tarragon green pea puree. There are also a few healthy options, such as roasted zucchini and feta salad. Simply put, Barasti is fun, friendly and an essential Dubai destination for a casual evening out. Rise to the occasion

2

For millennia pita bread has been a mainstay on Arabic menus and long may it continue

As one of the most cosmopolitan cities on the planet you’d be hard-pushed to find a national cuisine that is not represented in Dubai. But if you’re keen to experience Arabic dining (a rite of passage for all UAE visitors) you won’t be disappointed by what’s on offer. Rich flavours and spicy aromas are synonymous with Arabic cuisine, as are piles and piles of fresh fluffy white pita bread – a staple Middle Eastern food. The background of pita has many versions in historic literature, but its exact genesis remains unknown. Various cultures have claimed ownership, but most accounts point towards the Middle East as the originator. What we know is that it is one of the oldest recipes known to mankind. The 10th-century Arab cookery book, Kitab al-Tabikh by Ibn Sayyar al-Warraq includes six recipes for pita and experts believe the bread’s history extends back a further five thousand years. While the recipes and cooking techniques have doubtlessly evolved over the millennia, by and large pita has remained true to its original serving style. “In Arabic households pita is traditionally used to scoop up food,” explains Mokhtar El Kaholy, head chef at The Palace – The Old Town’s Arabic restaurant, Ewaan. “For breakfast we eat it with cheese and for lunch and dinner it’s served on the side of a main dish. It’s not customary to use cutlery as the typical way to eat it is to rip it apart with one’s hands.” In terms of ingredients, pita bread recipes differ from region to region but the basic elements are flour, water, salt, sugar, butter and yeast. The sticky, wet dough is sculpted into rounded balls and placed in the oven, where (depending on the temperature) it can be transformed in as little as three minutes into a golden brown, puffed pocket. “There are many different ways to cook pita,” says El Kaholy. “I take the traditional ingredients and combine them with other elements, such as ghee (clarified butter) and yoghurt.” Undeviating in tastiness, it’s no surprise that pita is such a dominant part of the Arabic diet. But what of the anti-carb brigade? In an age when carbohydrates are seen as the route of all diet downfalls are the days of pita numbered? “Never,” says El Kaholy emphatically. “Bread is a huge part of the Arabic culture. We share it with family and friends and it is served at every meal. Mothers teach daughters their culinary skills, which are passed on from generation to generation. Ultimately, it’s rooted so deep in our traditions it will never change.”

Par for the course Swing by one of Dubai’s premier golfing greens

Q W o r d s b y c at h e r i n e l a n g l e y

Much like the rest of this extraordinary city, the Dubai golfing scene is growing at a rate of knots. Now boasting a stunning portfolio of first-class courses (with more on the way) Dubai’s tourist scene is populated with passionate players, keen to perfect their backswings. And who could blame them? The scenery is beautiful, the clubhouses are five-star and the city is home to an array of famous golfing events, including the renowned Dubai Desert Classic and the Dubai World Championship. Tiger Woods, Anders Hansen and Rory Mcllroy are just a few of the big-name golfers to have played on these greens and this year’s line-up looks to be starrier still. But other than celebrity contenders and palm-lined booby traps, which promise to thrill and kill your spirit all at the same time, what else can visitors expect from Dubai’s golfing greens? Concierge takes a look at what’s on the cards.

Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club Voted one of the world’s ‘Top 100 Must-Play Golf Courses’, Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club first opened in 1993. The dhow-inspired clubhouse once stood solitary on Dubai’s fabled landscape. These days it’s just one of the city’s many architectural wonders, but the fusion of heritage and modernity has made it one of the most photographed landmarks in the emirate. With undulating fairways, lakes and mounds, the par-71 course measures 6,967 yards and promises a challenging journey from the first tee to the 18 th green. “The course always promises an enjoyable round,” says George Kasparis, senior golf professional. “Because it is located next to the iconic Dubai Creek, water is a feature throughout, which presents a true challenge.” However, you don’t need to be a visor-wearing pro to play on these greens because the Dubai Creek Golf Academy boasts excellent all-round amenities. “We always offer golfers a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere,” says Kasparis. “Marshals are on hand to assist and we have six PGA-qualified teaching professionals available to help you with any part of your game.” Location: Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, Garhoud Contact: 04 2956000, www.dubaigolf.com

For those who want to gain a deeper knowledge and impove their skills, the indoor swing rooms have computerised video swing analysis to help you with everything from putting to your backswing

The Address Montgomerie Dubai Designed by Ryder Cup star Colin Montgomerie, you can expect big things from this spectacular links-syle course. Spread across 7,396 yards and combining the great traditions of Scottish golf with an Arabian environment, The Address Montgomerie Dubai is consistently ranked as one of the Middle East’s top courses. It’s a testing game for all levels of golfer, but don’t be intimidated. With no handicap restriction, beginners as well as seasoned players are at ease on these perfectly manicured lawns. “The best feature of this course is that it challenges all levels of golfer,” explains Rhys Beecher, senior golf instruction manager. “We have a selection of tee boxes, which allows the course to play the appropriate length for the standard of golfer.” That said, there are some fiddly spots to look out for. The infamous 18th hole, which is a long par-5 surrounded by water is said to be one of the toughest shots on the course. Likewise, the sixth and ninth holes, which sweep round water hazards are also quite sweat inducing. “These three lakes have accumulated quite a few balls over the years,” says Beecher. For those who want to gain a deeper knowledge and improve their playing skills, the indoor swing rooms have the latest computerised video swing analysis, and short game practice areas are available to help you with everything from putting stroke to a major overhaul of your backswing. An added bonus is the luxurious clubhouse restaurant, Nineteen. Famed for its mouthwatering Saturday roast, we recommend you stop by for a beer and a bite after your game. Emirates Golf Club Styled in the fashion of traditional Bedouin tents, the Emirates Golf Club is home to The Majlis and The Faldo courses. Sculptured around desert dunes, The Majlis was the first grass course in the Middle East. Known for its tricky holes, this is a place where grown men weep. “The third shot into the par-5, 18th is extremely difficult,” says Stephen Deane, head academy professional. “The player is faced with water and a narrow green, with the added pressure of peering eyes from the clubhouse.” The Faldo was designed by the legendary Nick Faldo and is also a popular spot with veteran players. Faldo’s trademark tees and bunkers create an exciting experience and the course is also fully floodlit, making it ideal for night games. Al Badia Golf Club by InterContinental Dubai Festival City Designed by distinguished golf course architect Robert Trent Jones II, Al Badia Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-72 championship golf course, which joins a world-class green with hi-tech training facilities. The club’s services include the region’s only TaylorMade Performance Lab, featuring the MATT (Motion Analysis Technology of TaylorMade) swing analysis and club fitting system, as well as an indoor Science and Motion (SAM) PuttLab to improve putting skills. But if technology fails you, you can always do things the old-fashioned way at the club’s golf academy. “Our experienced team knows how important the first impression is, so we try to build a supportive atmosphere for players,” says club professional, Matthew Parker. “Some of the finest professionals in the country are on hand to help golfers develop their skills, regardless of ability or experience.” And for those who like to take it easy, swing by Blades. A firm favourite with casual golfers, this resort course was the brainchild of golf course architect Peter Harradine. With his master craftsmanship each hole has been uniquely landscaped with exotic trees, shrubs and the original desert flora. It also features a saltwater lake which comes into play on five holes. The world’s best drivers speed around Yas Marina Circuit, which wraps around a stunning marina and through the five-star Yas Viceroy hotel. Afterwards there are concerts, parties and gala dinners Welcome to the weekend Dubai’s neighbouring emirate, Abu Dhabi, has hosted an F1 Grand Prix since 2009. It is the world’s first and only day/night race, starting in the afternoon and ending after sundown. It’s a spectacular time of day as the huge red Arabian sun sets behind the West Grandstand and Abu Dhabi skyline. As the day turns into night, powerful floodlights keep the circuit illuminated so the drivers do not see any visible difference.

Each year, the Grand Prix attracts a sellout crowd of 50,000 people. On track, the world’s best drivers speed around the 5.55km Yas Marina Circuit, which wraps around a stunning marina and through the five-star Yas Viceroy hotel. Afterwards there are huge concerts, glamorous parties, gala dinners, family events and more. Those with three-day tickets are invited to go behind the scenes on November 10 and walk down Pit Lane. The action kicks off on Friday, November 11, with practice sessions, GP2, Porsche GT3 and Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, before the Britney Spears concert for ticket holders in the Yas Arena. The stakes are raised on Saturday, November 12, as the F1 drivers vie for pole position during qualifying. GP2, Porsche GT3 and Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup take to the track as well, while Incubus and The Cure hit the stage in the evening. For those unable to secure one of the 50,000 tickets to the Grand Prix, there is still a multitude of ways to get involved. Bars throughout the city will be screening coverage from Yas Island and there will be a live broadcast with commentary at the F1 FanZone on the Corniche. Even if you’re not in Abu Dhabi on the Grand Prix weekend, you can still get into the Formula One spirit. Yasalam, which is the Arabic word for ‘amazing’ or ‘wow’, is a month-long programme of exciting events, concerts and activities across the city in the lead-up to the Grand Prix. On the Corniche, the F1 FanZone attracted 404,000 visitors over 18 days in 2010 with its schedule of community events. This year promises more motorsport fun with interactive simulators, remote-control car racing, driver signings, official Formula One team merchandise, podium photo opportunities, kite flying demonstrations and live outdoor screenings of the races.

Vettel’s dream run Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel may have dominated the 2011 season, winning the driver’s championship in Suzuka, Japan, last month and claiming the record as the youngest driver to win back-to-back world championships, but can he win again in Abu Dhabi? As the only F1 driver to have taken the chequered flag at Yas Marina Circuit it certainly seems likely. Last year he claimed pole position and top spot on the podium in Abu Dhabi, scoring the world championship for the first time and snatching glory from teammate Mark Webber, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton. In 2009 during Abu Dhabi’s debut Grand Prix, the young German started second on the grid and leapfrogged Hamilton on the first pit stop to take the lead and stay there. While the drivers and constructors championships have already been determined for the 2011 season, the battle is on to see whether someone can knock Vettel off the top of the Yas podium come race day. Will it be 2008 champion Jenson Button, the moody Spaniard Alonso, Aussie battler Webber or British hero Hamilton?

Need to know - F ormula One is extremely loud and can cause damage to eardrums. Bring earplugs or buy some at the circuit - F ood and drinks will not be allowed into the circuit, however they can be bought in the Oasis Village and grandstands. In addition, free water will be available at locations around the circuit - Don’t forget your camera, hat and suncream - Different tickets allow entry on different days. Make sure you bring the right ticket - F ree buses will provide transport to and from Yas Island with Park and Ride stations at Zayed Sports City and Shahama - T here are numerous ATMs at the circuit

Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club Best for: Watching and playing polo At the Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club beside Arabian Ranches, enthusiasts can choose from a range of riding lessons, from show jumping to dressage and polo. Group and private polo lessons are available and the centre offers theoretical and practical training. The club can also organise a ‘Polo Experience’ for up to 30 people, making it the ideal venue of choice for corporate get-togethers or larger holiday groups. For those who prefer to enjoy polo from the safety of terra firma, there are plenty of opportunities to watch matches during the season, which begins in October and ends in April. Contrary to popular opinion, this doesn’t have to cost a fortune. One option is to pack a picnic and drive onto the green as many events at Arabian Ranches only charge a small fee per car for polo field entry. Alternatively, you can purchase a ready-made gourmet picnic hamper from the club for Dhs300 and access to the green is complimentary, leaving you free to tread in the divots to your heart’s content. Mushrif Equestrian & Polo Club Best for: Moonlit riding

PHOTOGRAPHY: ADHAM SNEEH, CATE WARDE, THE DUBAI POLO & EQUESTRIAN CLUB AND DESERT PALM

Past Dubai International airport and Mirdiff on Al Khawaneej road is Mushrif Park, 1,300 acres of natural desert parkland. Within the park is Mushrif Equestrian & Polo Club (MEC). Here, all levels and ages of riders are catered for, with group and private lessons available. “The park is fabulous,” says Lisa Roberts from the MEC. “It’s full of trees and wildlife and there’s lots of different terrain. It’s a natural ghaf [type of tree] forest, so it’s perfect for a tour.” An unusual experience on offer is the chance to ride under the moonlight. Every month, at the time of the full moon, the club organises an atmospheric night-time trip through Mushrif Park. Even complete beginners are welcome for these rides, an evocative, sensual experience. MEC also has two regular women’s coffee mornings, where ladies meet and have horse riding lessons (beginners or intermediate) before getting together for a coffee and a chat. “A lot of women meet in shopping malls. It’s an expat thing to do,” explains Lisa, “but here we offer an opportunity to get together and do something different.” Location: Mushrif Park, on Al Khawaneej road Website: mushrifequestrianclub.wordpress.com Tel: 04 2571256 or 050 1030243 Email: mushrif.riding@gmail.com

Emirates Equestrian Centre Best for: Desert hacking and riding lessons A few miles outside Dubai, near Bab Al Shams Desert Resort & Spa, sits the Emirates Equestrian Centre (EEC). It’s an idyllic setting for riding in the desert. The dunes stretch for miles around and those taking part in a hack can spot gazelles, lizards and other native wildlife. The EEC is an impressive, purposebuilt venue. What it lacks in proximity to the centre of Dubai it makes up for in facilities, which are excellent. There’s an international arena, as well as two indoor and two outdoor arenas, all equipped with floodlights. The facility is British Horse Society (BHS) approved; an important consideration for safety and the standards of its riding instructors. Staff can cater for all levels of riders, from novices to the more advanced and all are welcome. The main

disciplines are show jumping, dressage and eventing, which has become popular in recent years in the UAE. There’s even a cross-country course. The EEC can provide pony rides, lead rein lessons for children, child and adult group lessons and private lessons. Prices vary: discounts are available on prepaid cards where customers pay in advance for a number of lessons. Both EEC and Desert Palm maintain good relationships with top international riders, who frequently visit and offer tuition to advanced students.

Desert Palm Best for: Horse riding and polo lessons Set on the edge of town, off the Al Awir Road, Desert Palm is an oasis of calm and peace, and probably the prettiest setting for a horseback excursion in Dubai. Riders can hack around the venue’s four championship polo fields, enjoying the beautiful scenery and rare wildlife. The riding school at Desert Palm is also British Horse Society approved and is populated by a group of young, enthusiastic, professional instructors. They cater for all levels, from beginners to advanced riders. It’s an ideal riding school for children. Michelle Woolmer is mum to four-yearold Ella, who sat on a horse for the first time a year ago, and has just started lessons at Desert Palm. “I take Ella to Desert Palm because it’s a private and safe environment,” says Woolmer, a former professional showjumper. “It’s safe to put her on a lead rope and it’s safe to hack around. She can enjoy the pony, Cherie, talk to her, brush her, roll up her sleeves and get involved with the pony, as little girls like to.” Desert Palm is a polo paradise, with matches being held most days during the season, which runs from October to April. Prospective polo players can learn the basics or brush up on their skills with individual or group lessons.

Club Joumana at the Jebel Ali Golf Resort & Spa Best for: Horse riding on the beach In recent years, a lot of effort has been put into revamping the facilities at Club Joumana and the venue’s profile has been lifted. Located at the Jebel Ali Golf Resort & Spa, it’s a good riding option for those staying at the New Dubai end of the city. Here, more experienced riders can enjoy pleasant outdoor excursions, the most enjoyable of which is the opportunity to ride on the beach and to swim with the ponies in the sea. my dubai Farhang Sadeghi, equestrian manager at the Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club shares his tips for horsing around in Dubai

Having lived in Dubai for 14 years I’ve witnessed a lot of changes. The city’s expansion has been phenomenal and like most things, the equestrian scene has developed dramatically. Dubai enjoys an excellent reputation as one of the world’s most sought-after destinations and the place to experience the best equine activities. For that reason we’re now seeing a lot of tourists visiting the area to watch and participate in tournaments. As well as competitions, there are a variety of horse-related activities to try. Stable tours are extremely popular in Dubai and a must-do and for those with children. Of course, not everyone has had experience with horses, so you can also book in for a horse riding lesson. It’s a great way to pick up skills and develop your confidence. Usually my weekends are about resting and spending time with my family, but I often go riding to refresh myself

}

and recharge my batteries. Desert horse riding is one of my preferred pastimes. There’s nothing like hacking over the sand. Tours run regularly and if you time it right (early or late) you can watch the sun set or rise over the dunes. I also enjoy watching polo and every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday (except during the hot summer months) Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club members play matches against each other. At least once a month we hold major tournaments and a nice way to spend an afternoon is to pack a picnic and watch the matches from the field. Visitors to Dubai should take the time to check out the equestrian scene, but only visit stables with good reputations. Your hotel concierge should be able to advise, but if you’re unsure, look at the overall cleanliness, temperature and building conditions of the stable, as this is often a reflection of how well the animals are being cared for.

Winning formula Concierge takes a look at the history of a sport now enjoyed by an estimated 600 million people worldwide

Q W O R D S B Y C H A R L O T T E VA N D E N B R O U C Q U E

Formula One came into existence in 1946 when the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) announced it as the premier single-seater racing category in world motorsport. The ‘formula’ refers to a set of rules and regulations to which all drivers and cars must comply and tries to ensure a driver’s safety while pushing the boundaries of the sport and creating a spectacle for audiences. It wasn’t until May 13, 1950, that the FIA organised the first official world championship for drivers using the Formula One rules. The championship was to be staged across six major circuits in Europe as well as the Indianapolis 500. Since then it has gone from strength to strength and become the richest sport in the world, with an increasing audience. It has taken more than 60 years to build F1 from a modest motor race to the billion-dollar business it is today.

The 1950s In the early Grands Prix of the 1950s, Italian teams Ferrari and Maserati were best positioned to win. French manufacturer Talbot and the UK’s BRM also competed along with a number of private cars, but it was Italy’s Alfa Romeo that dominated the 1950s season, winning all races apart from the Indianapolis 500. Italy’s Giuseppe Farina won the inaugural championship in an Alfa Romeo 158, with Argentina’s Juan Manuel Fangio taking the 1951 title in an Alfa Romeo 159. Both cars were built using only prewar materials and technology. Alfa Romeo withdrew at the end of the 1951 season after the Italian government refused to fund the development of a new car. With little competition from BRM or Talbot, Ferrari won the 1952 and 1953 seasons with Italy’s Alberto Ascari at the wheel. In 1954 Lancia and Mercedes-Benz joined, hiring Ascari and Fangio respectively. The decade’s racing scene belonged to Fangio, who won the title in ’51, ’54, ’55, ’56 and ’57 and is still known as the grand master of Formula One. Safety standards were low and the death toll of the decade was gruesome, resulting in the deaths of 15 drivers.

DIS C O VER /F1 HISTO R Y

The 1960s The 1960s were an era of British dominance, ushered in by Mike Hawthorn’s win in 1958. It was the time of Stirling Moss. Although he never won a world title, he is still considered one of the best British drivers of all time. The British Racing Green Lotus was the car of the moment and in 1968 the team drove the first cars to carry advertising. They arrived at Spain’s Circuito del Jarama in the red, gold and white colours of Imperial Tobacco’s Gold Leaf brand.

The 1970s The turning point for Formula One and the way it was managed came when Bernie Ecclestone purchased the Brabham team in 1971. With a seat on the Formula One Constructors Association (FOCA), he was soon making waves in the world of racing. In 1978 Ecclestone became president of the association and would be instrumental

2

in changing the face of F1 forever. Until then circuit owners negotiated with teams individually and even controlled their income. Shifting power to the association, Ecclestone masterminded ‘package deals’ in which circuit owners would have to surrender advertising track rights to have Formula One races meet at their track. Brazilian Emerson Fittipaldi became the youngest driver to win the championship at the age of 25 (this record has since gone to Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton and most recently Sebastian Vettel). Britain’s Jackie Stewart rose to challenge his title and together they dominated the Formula One scene for the entire first half of the decade. Technological changes included the introduction of the aluminium sheet monocoque chassis in place of the spaceframe design and the introduction of ground effect aerodynamics to increase cornering speeds.

“There is a formula for success and it is not difficult to analyse. It is made up of 50 percent car, 25 percent driver and 25 percent luck.” – Fangio

Brazil’s Ayrton Senna and Nelson Piquet, as well as France’s Alain Prost, dominated the 1980s with British teams Brabham, McLaren and Williams winning every title of the decade. By 1988, the focus was on the rivalry between Senna and Prost, which continued until Prost’s retirement in 1993. Yet theirs wasn’t the only infighting. With Ecclestone at the helm of the FOCA, war was waged against the Federation International du Sport Automobile (FISA) over the television rights and technical regulations. FOCA boycotted the San Marino Grand Prix in 1982 and threatened to create a rival version of Formula One until FISA handed over the television rights to races in 1981, placing the jewel in the crown of Ecclestone’s empire. The development of electronic driver aids started during the 1980s. Lotus began to develop a system of active suspension, which first appeared in 1982. By 1987, this system had been perfected and was driven to victory by Senna in the Monaco Grand Prix that year.

Fa s t fa c t s - Fangio was once kidnapped by Fidel Castro’s July 26 Movement, but emerged unharmed after being well looked after - The earliest in a season that the driver’s championship has been clinched was in 2002, when Michael Schumacher secured the title with six races remaining - Once a Formula One car is travelling at 160kmh, it can generate enough downforce to equal its own weight, meaning it could hold itself to the ceiling of a tunnel and drive upside down - Most racing tyres are filled with nitrogen as it has a more consistent pressure than regular air

Juan Manuel Fangio Born in Argentina, 1911 Juan Manuel Fangio began racing in local events from Argentina through the Andes of Peru and back again. The Argentinean government eventually sponsored him to race in Europe after the end of World War II. He raced for Maserati and then Mercedes, competing in 12 Grands Prix and winning eight times. He retired at the age of 47. 5

6

Ayrton Senna Born in Brazil, 1960 Ayrton Senna is considered one of the greatest drivers in F1 history. His debut race was the 1984 Brazilian Grand Prix in Rio de Janeiro and his first podium was second place at the Monaco Grand Prix in the same season. He claimed world championship titles in 1988, 1990 and 1991. Senna was killed in an accident in 1994 at the San Marino Grand Prix while driving for Williams Renault. Michael Schumacher Born in Germany, 1969 Statistically speaking, Michael Schumacher is the best racing driver of all time, with seven world championship titles and many driver records. He is the only driver in F1 history to have stood on the podium every race of a season (2002). He won the most races in a single season (13) in 2004 and holds records for the most race victories, fastest laps and points scored in a single season.

“It was not a race. It was a demonstration of brilliance.” – Stirling Moss commenting on Schumacher’s performance at the 1996 Spanish Grand Prix

4 Juan Manuel Fangio 5 Ayrton Senna 6 Michael Schumacher 7 Bruce McLaren, Spanish Grand Prix, 1968 8 Michael Schumacher racing for Ferrari

The 1990s The cost of the technological advances of the 1990s put an end to many teams’ participation in the sport. Since 1990, 28 teams have withdrawn from F1, leaving the ‘Big Four’ – McLaren, Williams, Renault (formerly Benetton) and Ferrari – to win every world championship from 1984 to 2008. The FIA frequently changed the rules to improve on-track action, with result-manipulating ‘team orders’ banned since 1992. After the deaths of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenburger in 1994, there was a crackdown on safety, resulting in slower cornering and other steps to focus on the driver’s skill. The results are controversial, with a decline in overtaking as a result, detracting from the excitement of the event, but no driver since Senna has died behind the wheel of an F1 vehicle.

2000 and beyond

98

It was in 2000 that Michael Schumacher started his record run of five consecutive world championship titles, all with Ferrari. After this landmark success, Schumacher retired in 2006, but has returned to the sport for the last two seasons. Since then, Finland’s Kimi Raikonnen, Britain’s Button and Hamilton and Germany’s Vettel have stolen the limelight and helped pave the way for a new generation of young drivers.

Hunters in harmony The bond between the falcon and the Bedouin has always been strong, based on the bird of prey’s ability to hunt game for food

Q Words by Scott Birch

The national bird of the United Arab Emirates, the magnificent falcon adorns every official document in the country. Prey caught by the birds helped to feed Bedouin families, contributing in a practical way to the survival of the nomads in a hostile desert environment. As a result, the birds are respected, admired and revered in local culture and people from all backgrounds keep and breed them. Hunting with falcons has been banned in the UAE to protect species such as houbaras (bustards) or karawan (stone curlews) – the natural prey which were becoming endangered species. Despite this, the husbandry of falcons still remains of paramount importance to local people and many falcon enthusiasts travel abroad on hunting holidays to Africa and Asia. The admiration of these majestic birds is passed from generation to generation. Hunting plays a less significant role, with enthusiasts often simply training and flying the birds for pleasure. Falcons think with their eyes. Because their eyesight is so sharp they can be upset by large crowds of people or unfamiliar places. Birds can be calmed by placing a hood over their heads, locally called a burqa. When they cannot see, they are immediately calmed. Training a falcon to return to the owner’s hand is a slow and instinctive exercise in bonding. The falconer begins slowly, allowing the falcon to roam for short distances. He uses a lure, usually a reward of food, to bring the falcon back. The two major breeds of falcon native to the UAE are the saker (al hurr) and the peregrine (al shaheen). The process of breeding and registering the birds is taken seriously. There are even falcon passports, aimed at stamping out illegal trade. Most birds are bought in August before the sport season starts in September. This marks the busiest time for breeders. Tall birds are prized, especially the gyrfalcon/peregrine mixed breeds. The gyrfalcon are revered for their good looks, but being Arctic birds are less adaptive to the heat of the desert. Breeding a gyrfalcon with a peregrine introduces stamina and the ability to cope with the harsh desert climate. Birds are measured for height, breadth and length from shoulder to tail. They are also analysed for athleticism. White birds and those with certain shades of brown are considered more beautiful among local falconers and are consequently more expensive. Deals are done, birds literally change hands and the falconry community prepares itself for a winter of sport.

Fa l c o n e x p e r i e n c e s : Many tour operators and hotels offer falconry experiences, where visitors can view impressive demonstrations of the birds’ skills and beauty in flight. Shaheen Xtreme Falconry provides tours for those wanting to learn more about the bird and its role in historic and modern times. Visitors can get up close to the falcons and watch them in full flight. For more information, see www.shaheenxtreme.com

Tall stories The world’s tallest tower, biggest shopping mall and largest dancing fountain. Ladies and gentleman, we give you Downtown Dubai

1

If you ever lose your bearings in Dubai, don’t panic. A quick glance at the city skyline puts things in perspective. Like a symbolic compass rising up from the vast landscape, the shimmering silver needle of the Burj Khalifa is a visitor’s guide back to one of the central parts of the city – Downtown Dubai. Like so many areas in the emirate, Downtown Dubai is a visual spectacle. From the colossal 828metre-high Burj Khalifa, which thanks to the turbo-charged elevators, you can jet to the top of in less than 60 seconds, to the awe-inspiring Dubai Fountain, everything is designed to make you gape. But there’s more to this area than jaw-dropping sights. Home to a manmade 30-acre lake, vast grass land (perfect for picnickers) and walkways that encircle the entire development, this is one of the few places in Dubai where pedestrians roam freely, without the encumbrance of heavy traffic. With every type of cuisine from sushi to shwarmas, the Downtown promenade provides the ideal stop for al fresco diners to gather and watch the remarkable displays of The Dubai Fountain. Synchronised to music, this fountain has danced to the likes of Celine Dion and Lionel Richie and is accompanied by lightshows. For details on show timings turn to page 12. Photo opportunities are also round every corner, from the obligatory Burj Khalifa ground-upwards composition to snaps of the fountain in full spray. Art buffs should direct their attention to Fernando Botero’s famous Horse 2007 sculpture. Commissioned as part of the Art Programme for Downtown Dubai, Horse 2007 is located near The Dubai Mall entrance and offers you the chance to snap to your heart’s content.

Struggling to find a tee time or looking for an alternative challenge? The UAE has other excellent courses to feed your need. The Abu Dhabi Golf Club (02 5588990) is managed by Troon Golf and located just ten minutes from the airport. This superb, 27-hole championship course has excellent facilities and a distinctive clubhouse shaped like a falcon. The course itself is pleasantly tough with many water hazards to negotiate. Also in the capital is the newly opened Saadiyat Beach Golf Club (02 5578000), designed by Gary Player and the Gulf’s only ocean course. Heading north, Tower Links (07 2278555) in Ras Al Khaimah is a tricky 18-hole course that meanders through a mangrove swamp and has the Hajar Mountains as a backdrop. The back nine holes are also floodlit, meaning you can make the most of your journey.

SEVENS HEAVEN An event that doesn’t feature too many well-known faces, but does pack in three days of pulsating action, socialising and excitement is The Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens. Last year’s tournament took place from December 2nd to 4th, with England clinching victory after a thrilling 29-21 win against Samoa in the final. As the opening tournament of the IRB Sevens, many of rugby’s powerhouse nations, including South Africa, New Zealand, England, France, Wales and Australia, fly in to compete for the Emirates International Trophy. The standard was raised even further in 2009 as Dubai hosted the Rugby World Cup Sevens. The men’s tournament featured a series of upsets including underdog Wales taking the Melrose Cup. Meanwhile, Australia won the first women’s competition to be held in a Rugby World Cup Sevens.
