There’s also an oyster-opening demonstration and visitors are invited to forage for the precious pearls inside with an assurance from owner, Ali Al Saloom, that enough oysters will be provided to ensure every guest gets to find a pearl – which is then theirs to keep. Come evening time, visitors will find an abundance of restaurants to choose from catering to all different cuisines and culinary styles. One of the most distinctive dining venues in the city is Chamas at the InterContinental Abu Dhabi, where waiters continue to serve guests succulent strips of meat until they ask them to stop. A city in the making Abu Dhabi is undergoing a rapid transformation as brand new mega-developments emerge that take the city’s credentials as a destination ‘par excellence’ to new heights Words by

Gemma GreenWood

Abu Dhabi is, quite simply, a city on a mission. The government has set out clear targets for the diversification of the capital’s economy aiming to diminish its reliance on oil and create a framework for sustainable growth across all sectors. Regular visitors to the city cannot fail to notice the speed with which Abu Dhabi is transforming as new structures take shape with remarkable rapidity, contributing to the ever-evolving urban landscape of the UAE capital as it sets out to become a world-class business, leisure and visitor destination. These sectors are being heavily targeted in the government’s Vision 2030, which outlines plans for the future of the capital’s business and leisure industries, detailing ambitious growth over the coming years. “Our aim is to build a sustainable tourism destination that is recognised for its conservation and promotion of Abu Dhabi’s heritage and culture,” explains HE Mubarak Hamad Al Muhairi, director general of Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi). Some of Abu Dhabi’s landmark developments to date include the emirate’s entertainment hub, Yas Island where Yas Marina Circuit (YMC), home of the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, can be found alongside the world’s largest indoor theme park, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi and Yas Waterworld. Just next door is Saadiyat Island, the capital’s future culture hub, which is shaping up as a leisure destination in its own right given the wealth of outstanding lifestyle, sports and hospitality facilities here.

cultural acclaim Once completed, Saadiyat Island will place the UAE capital alongside the world’s top cultural destinations and establish Abu Dhabi as a major player on the international arts scene. Much of this will be down to the presence of three high-profile museums set to open their doors here over the coming years. First up is Louvre Abu Dhabi, which will make its mark as the first universal museum in the Arab world, displaying

art, manuscripts and objects of historical, cultural and sociological significance, when it opens in 2015. The following year will see the launch of the much-anticipated Zayed National Museum, which will tell the story of the region’s history and the unification of the UAE through the life and person of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the nation’s founding father. All three museums will become Abu Dhabi landmarks thanks to their architectural prowess, driven by three Pritzker Prizewinning architects. Louvre Abu Dhabi will be housed in a futuristic building designed by Jean Nouvel; Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, created by Frank Gehry will echo Gulf architecture, incorporating dramatic conical forms that play with a modern twist on the region’s ancient windtowers; and Zayed National Museum will reflect Sheikh Zayed’s love of falconry, with the design, (by Lord Norman Foster) inspired by the dynamic flight and feathers of a falcon. These three museums will be joined by a new Performing Arts Centre and The District – a leisure and entertainment hub set for completion in 2017 and boasting indoor-outdoor shopping and dining venues.

A prime address Saadiyat Cultural District is just one of three main districts being created on Saadiyat Island by master developer Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC). Others include Saadiyat Beach District, where a collection of five-star international beach resorts, leisure facilities and prestigious residential developments will be constructed and Saadiyat Marina District, which TDIC envisages as the future commercial heart of the island. This will feature high-quality commercial spaces in addition to one of the capital’s leading educational institutions – New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), which will move to its permanent campus here later in the year. “The cultural, residential and hospitality projects we are developing will support Abu Dhabi’s evolution into a world-class destination,” says TDIC executive director of marketing, communications, sales and leasing, Ahmed Al Fahim. Saadiyat Island, he stresses, is: “The prime address for high-end residential, educational, cultural, hospitality and leisure developments along with state-of-the-art commercial facilities. Once completed, the 27-square-kilometre natural island will house around 145,000 residents and offer travellers an entirely unique experience,” he adds.

Saadiyat Beach District has already put Saadiyat Island on the map as a luxury lifestyle destination thanks to the launch of several high-end hospitality venues, including Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas, The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Monte-Carlo Beach Club and Saadiyat Beach Golf Club. New properties set to join them in 2015 include the Saadiyat Rotana Resort and a recently announced five-star resort to be built by UAE-based developer Bin Otaiba Investment Group. Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts and Mandarin Oriental are also mooted to operate properties on this sought-after stretch of sandy coastline and plans are afoot to build a premier shopping and entertainment destination – Saadiyat Beach Marina Village – complete with a 150-berth marina here. The completely separate Saadiyat Marina District is also taking shape on the island, where a large-scale Maritime Museum will be a key feature. Three additional upcoming Saadiyat Island developments of note are: Saadiyat Retreat, nestled on the most secluded point of the island with boutique hotels and spa facilities; Saadiyat Promenade, a downtown waterfront hub lined with hotels, shops, modern restaurants and entertainment venues; and Saadiyat Reserve, where the island’s flourishing wetlands, free-flowing waterways and lush mangroves will be preserved under

6

the Saadiyat Reserve project. Future plans also outline boutique hotels and the region’s first championship tidal golf course earmarked for this landmark development, which is already taking shape as a major visitor attraction.

A new central Business district The UAE capital is placing equal emphasis on transforming itself into a hub for business and commerce to be focused around Al Maryah Island. Another grand-scale island project, this futuristic destination will take the shape of a 114-hectare mixeduse development featuring premium office space, luxury corporate hotels, residential neighbourhoods, high-end dining venues and shopping outlets.

The recently completed Central Business District (CBD) Sowwah Square, marks an important milestone in the government’s strategic urban development plan. The area comprises four 30- to 36-storey office towers, each of which has been created according to eco-friendly guidelines and features an energy-efficient design combining solar energy, insulating air cavities and automated sun shades. Abdulla Al Shamsi, vice president of Mubadala Real Estate & Infrastructure (MREI), the developer of Sowwah Square, says current highlights open to visitors on Al Maryah Island include the five-star Rosewood Abu Dhabi, which launched this year and The Galleria at Sowwah Square – a brand new luxury shopping and dining precinct. The Galleria features an “unrivalled collection of designer labels and premium brands, as well as sophisticated cuisines from chef-driven venues,” he explains, gesturing towards the mall’s 130 retail outlets and 25 dining venues. “The

Galleria’s unique offering within Abu Dhabi, complemented by its spectacular waterfront views across the cityscape, not only adds depth to Al Maryah Island and Sowwah Square’s leisure facilities, but further solidifies its position as a true urban hub on a par with the world’s leading CBD,” says Al Shamsi. The Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi at Al Maryah Island is also under construction, marking the UAE debut of the luxury hotel brand.

Abu Dhabi has made clear its commitment towards sustainability. Plans to promote renewable energy and environmental preservation are key to the capital’s diversification strategy, which will safeguard the long-term prosperity of the emirate. At the forefront of Abu Dhabi’s environmental policy is the Masdar City project, a banner for sustainable living in the UAE. The low-carbon, low-waste development will set new standards in eco-friendly living around the world and has been hailed as ‘one of the most sustainable mixed-use developments on the planet’. According to a spokesperson from Masdar, the renewable energy and clean technology company behind the project, Masdar City provides a “creative and entrepreneurial atmosphere where businesses can thrive and innovation can flourish, in part because the city itself serves as a model of what green urban development can be”. “This is especially the case because Masdar City is being designed and operated to provide the highest quality of life with the lowest environmental footprint – all in a manner that is commercially viable,” the company adds. The new destination, which is already operational with many buildings, retail and dining outlets already completed, will be finished by 2025, when it is expected to house 40,000 residents and attract 50,000 commuters. Visitors can explore this pioneering development at their leisure and take advantage of the pedestrian-friendly environment, where narrow streets, shaded walkways and vehicle-free roads create a pleasant setting for a leisurely stroll while soaking up the small city’s ground-breaking sights and structures.

Falcons played a vital role in the lives of the region’s early Bedouin tribes and are still celebrated today as the national bird of the UAE

Years ago, when the Bedouin struggled for survival in a hostile desert environment, it was the falcon that caught and supplied them with much-needed meat. Today, mementos of the birds’ past service can be seen all over the UAE, on banknotes and official documents, in paintings and architecture and at heritage centres and cultural events. Some of these prized birds are also chosen and trained to take part in competitions around the world. The UAE is well-represented on the international falconry scene and Emiratis, who have been practising the sport in much the same way for centuries, make up a significant portion of the world’s falconers. The difference today is that it is pleasure rather than necessity that makes the region’s falcon enthusiasts go to great lengths to secure and tame these majestic creatures before teaching them to do their bidding.

Schooling the birds was and still is, a carefully engineered process. As a hunter for early inhabitants, a falcon not only had to respond to his master’s commands and return after being set loose, but also catch the prey without killing it. This was so Bedouin families could eat the meat in accordance with their Halal beliefs, which state that the animal must still be alive when the throat is cut and the blood is drawn. The first step for a falconer was to capture the bird. Edward Henderson, a former diplomat who spent a lot of time in the Gulf region, gives an account of a falcon catcher at work in his autobiography. He describes watching the man conceal himself in a hole in the sand and set a trap before luring the bird in with a live pidgeon and trapping it in a net.

Once the bird is caught, the handler must form a bond with the falcon, which can only arise from weeks of perseverance. During the early stages, the bird is kept with the trainer at all times, perched on his leather glove and shielded from distraction by a leather hood. As the falcon’s vision is so sharp, it can be easily upset by large crowds of people or unfamiliar places. When the falcon cannot see, it is instantly calmed. This sensitivity is a quality that artist Christine Allison seeks to capture in her paintings and sketches of the majestic birds. “Falcons fascinate me. They seem so fragile and yet so powerful at the same time and, of course, they are very beautiful subjects too.”

Allison’s interest in the birds was first sparked by a falconry experience that she arranged as a gift for her husband in England’s New Forest. “Afterwards I realised that something profound had occurred and I couldn’t stop drawing and painting these fabulous birds. I have been making art about them ever since.” Visitors looking to get better acquainted with the UAE’s national bird can join a guided tour at Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital, where the birds are sent every year for a full medical check-up before being released back into the wild. Previously, the most successful falcons would be kept in captivity for several years, but a recent law states that they must be released at the end of each season. Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital takes in 6,000 falcons every year, many of which come from countries around the region. Each falcon is fitted with a microchip and a leg ring to aid future identification and then put through a rigorous exercise programme and given extra food to boost its chances of survival in the first few weeks of release.

3

A handler must form a bond with the falcon, which can only arise from weeks of perseverance. During the early stages the bird must be kept with the handler at all times

5

Of course, today’s falconers are only in it for the sport. Hunting with falcons has been banned in the UAE to protect the falcon’s natural prey species such as houbaras (bustards) and karawan (stone curlews). Yet while the practical use for the birds has long died out, it is by no means forgotten. On the contrary, owning, training and flying a falcon is a means of tapping into UAE history and maintaining a link with the region’s local traditions.

In the last few moments of the 2013 Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship the tension reached boiling point. Crowds of spectators at the 18th hole held their breath as the world number five, Justin Rose, lined up his last putt and, in the pavilion, people craned their necks to get the best view of the final deciding shot. If he sunk it, the championship would go to the first ever play-off in its nine-year history. If he missed, then with it would go his hopes of victory in the prestigious tournament and his chance of scooping its US$2.7 million prize pot. For a few seconds it looked as though Rose had done it but then, just when everyone thought he had clinched the title, the ball lipped out of the hole and his opportunity was lost. Victory went instead to the world number 47, Jamie Donaldson, whose ranking soared to 29 following the win. It was, many felt, the most exhilarating edition of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship to date and, for an ecstatic Donaldson, a landmark moment in his career. Pictured planting a kiss on the Falcon Trophy afterwards, he explained his apprehension in the final moments of the tournament, which was only the Welsh golfer’s second European Tour title to date following a win at the Irish Open in 2012.

“It’s pretty surreal. I’ve played really well all week, although I got away with murder at the last. I thought one of them would hole – if not both. When both putts slipped by, it was my week,” Donaldson said at the time, describing the failed birdie attempts by both Rose and his playing partner, Thorbjorn Olesen at the 18th. “To win here is crazy,” he added, going on to explain that, after the pro-am earlier in the tournament, he would have been happy just to have finished in the top 10, considering the course too difficult and the field too strong. Donaldson’s name has now joined those of Chris DiMarco, Paul Casey, Martin Kaymer and Robert Rock on the Falcon Trophy who between them have won all editions of the event so far, fending off competition from the best players in the sport, including Tiger

Woods, Gary Player and Rory McIlroy. Germany’s Kaymer has played particularly well in the UAE capital, earning himself the title ‘King of Abu Dhabi’ with a record three wins in the tournament (2008, 2010 and 2011) followed by Englishman Casey, who has achieved two victories here over the years (2007 and 2009). As another world-class field prepares to tee-off at Abu Dhabi Golf Club this year, it looks as though Donaldson will have his work cut out if he is to defend his title. Among his strongest competitors are three of the world’s top six players, including two-time Major winner Rory McIlroy and five-time Major champion Phil Mickelson in addition to last year’s challenger and 2013 US Open champion, Justin Rose. World number four Phil Mickelson makes a welcome return to the UAE capital after another successful season in 2013. As the

reigning British Open and Scottish Open champion, 43-year-old Mickelson is one of the world’s most popular and accomplished golfers and has accumulated 42 US PGA Tour and nine European Tour titles, including five Majors, in his impressive career so far. His return to the championship raises the bar for players at the much-anticipated event, which looks set to challenge last year’s edition as the most thrilling tournament yet. “This event is gathering huge momentum and gets the golfing year off to a flying start. The quality of the field speaks volumes about the tournament and Phil is undoubtedly another headline attraction,” commented HSBC’s global head of sponsorship and events Giles Morgan when Mickelson confirmed his attendance in Abu Dhabi last November.

The American, who recently revealed that he will be cutting back on his tournament commitments in 2014 in a bid to focus on capturing a career Grand Slam with a US Open win to add to his other three Majors – The Masters, the British Open and the US PGA Championship – is keen to fit the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship into his early-season schedule. “To play Abu Dhabi in the early part of the year is a great opportunity. I’ve wanted to return since my first time in 2011. The golf course and the facilities at Abu Dhabi Golf Club are outstanding and the quality of the field and the good weather make it a great place to start my 2014 season,” Mickleson said. These factors have helped make the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship a favourite among visitors with a steady increase in the

number of spectators buying tickets each year and a global television audience in excess of 400 million. The success of the event has been a major factor in placing the UAE capital on the global golf map and contributing to the emergence of a burgeoning golf tourism market. Now, visitors from all over the world come to attend the tournament in January and throughout the rest of the year to play on Abu Dhabi’s world-class golf courses, which include the first true links course in the Middle East on Yas Island, a traditional sand course at Al Ghazal Golf Club and three championship-standard courses within 20 minutes of each other. “When the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) first decided to stage the tournament, its primary objective was to put the capital on the golfing map and in the first few years it achieved that by concentrating on providing a true

championship golf course that would offer a stiff but fair test for the world’s best players,” says tournament director, Peter German, adding: “The response has been terrific. The players genuinely love the tournament and appreciate all that Abu Dhabi has to offer – the weather, the accommodation, the friendly hospitality and, although perhaps I shouldn’t say it, the quality of the organisation.” Now firmly established as a major stop on the European Tour, the tournament serves as the first leg of the Middle East Swing and is followed by the Commercial bank Qatar Masters in Doha and the Omega Dubai Desert Classic at the end of the month. For visitors, there is ample opportunity to enjoy the event and experience the capital’s world-class golf courses while doing so. Golf In Abu Dhabi – one of several organisations promoting the sport in the capital – offers a series of luxury packages designed to provide an all-encompassing experience of the emirate’s five-star golfing facilities. The ‘tee for three’ package includes three nights’ accommodation, two rounds of golf at championship courses in the city and a three-day pass to the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship as well as entry to other attractions and facilities around the capital. Those who book the ‘week at the tees’ option get five rounds of golf at a selection of courses across the emirate to enjoy during a seven-day stay in Abu Dhabi.

The fairest ways Immaculate greens, undulating fairways and world-class facilities have placed the UAE’s golf courses a cut above the rest

Abu Dhabi’s growing appeal as an international golfing destination is easily explained by the wealth and range of excellent facilities available here. Three championship-standard golf courses within a 20-minute drive from the city centre offer golfers an opportunity to put their swings to the test on some of the region’s most challenging holes. Follow in the footsteps of the sport’s superstars at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, home to the HSBC Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, enjoy stunning scenery during a round at the protected Saadiyat Beach Golf Club and experience the Middle East’s first true Links course on Yas Island. Alternatively, take on the dunes on the sand course at Al Ghazal Golf Club or head over to neighbouring Al Ain. Here, a round of golf can easily be tied in with a visit to some of the city’s many cultural and natural attractions, including the capital’s highest peak - the majestic Jebel Hafeet - which provides a dramatic backdrop for players at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club. After trying Abu Dhabi’s best greens, visitors can head over to neighbouring Dubai where a fresh selection of first-rate golf courses await.

Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, par 72 Spread over 7,806 yards of undulating fairways that run alongside a pristine coastline, this spectacular course is known for its stunning scenery. However, don’t let the breathtaking views at the beachfront holes distract you for too long as this course, designed by golfing legend Gary Player, is definitely no walk in the park. A series of challenging par-three holes is countered by several strategically placed par-five holes surrounded by bunkers and water features that are ready and waiting to swallow any stray balls. As the region’s f irst ocean course, construction plans were governed by strict environmental guidelines created to protect

the natural beauty of Saadiyat Island and its indigenous population of gazelles, turtles and dolphins, which can be spotted by golfers as they go round. At the end of the game, the clubhouse, designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, welcomes players with an extensive menu of delicious dishes. There’s also a perfectly situated terrace that commands sweeping views of the greens and offers an ideal spot to sit and sip a cocktail as the sun goes down. Green fees: 18 holes, Sun to Wed AED650

Just 15 minutes outside the city centre, this luxurious golf resort offers an all-round experience that caters for both professionals and amateurs. Seasoned golfers can head straight out onto the 27-hole championship course, which extends over 7,334 yards of varied landscape, passing through pockets of palm trees surrounding perfectly maintained greens and rolling fairways that open into large saltwater lakes. Novice players can practise their swing on the 17-acre driving range, putting and chipping greens, where bright floodlights allow you to play on into the night. Those who want to polish their game can try the V1 pro-swing analysis training system, a state-of-the-art club fitting device and an Explanar training aid available on site. Perched over the ninth and 18th holes is the commanding clubhouse, built in the shape of a falcon swooping down on a golf ball. Inside are three floors of restaurants, a gym, sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi, two squash courts and an outdoor free-form swimming pool.

Yas Links, par 72 Designed by Kyle Philips, this is the Middle East’s first true links course and features all the thrills and challenges associated with the distinctive links style. It’s not a forgiving course. Several holes require golfers to hit directly into the wind, which whips in off the sea here. Those that can overcome these hurdles and make it around all 7,404 yards will be well-rewarded with undulating fairways, slick greens and, of course picturesque, grassy dunes. Many players have commented that a game at Yas Links feels similar to a round along the Scottish coast, where the links style was first developed. Those who want to hone their skills before taking on the challenge of the championship course can practise on the par-three, nine-hole academy course, which is f loodlit for evening sessions. Al Ghazal Golf Club, par 71 Ideal for those who want to break up their journey with a round of golf in the UAE capital, this par-71 course is situated just 400 metres from Abu Dhabi International Airport. Passengers can take advantage of free transit visas and complimentary transportation arranged by the club. The course offers a traditional take on golf in Abu Dhabi with its sand surface and location around an ancient archaeological site. Those who manage to hit the fairway, which is marked by a line of wooden stakes, are rewarded by hitting the next shot off a piece of portable astro turf. This isn’t exactly the slick experience offered by the capital’s newer courses but it does have a certain appeal as a destination more in tune with it’s desert surrounding, and more at the mercy of them – caddies are constantly checking yardages for burrows dug by dhubs, the local sand lizards.

The Academy here is a different matter altogether. PGA-qualified instructors teach students with some of the most advanced golf-training technology in the world, including the Royale Golf Visual Communication System, which allows swings to be professionally assessed on monitors. Students can then compare their swing to those of the game’s best players. The academy also has Durnian Frames, designed to train the swing and a stateof-the-art GASP fitting system, which allows the player to watch their swing from three different angles. In addition to this, there’s a first class repair and fitting centre, which offers re-gripping, refurbishing of wooden and metal heads, swing weighting and shortening or lengthening of clubs. green fees: 18 holes Sun to Thu AED100, Fri to Sat AED160. A modern fable Each timeless piece of Fabergé jewellery tells its own extraordinary story

To enter the world of Fabergé is to open a door to another era, to an exquisite time of tsars and Russian princesses draped in finery and enjoying the many luxurious trappings of high society. Surrounded by an ever-attentive entourage of the creative elite, the absolute best in the literature, art and music of the day was made available to the privileged members of the Imperial Court. Set against this backdrop, the intricate artistic jewellery designs of Peter Carl Fabergé came to the attention of Russian royalty, beginning a chapter in history that has gone on to define jewellery-making over the decades. That exceptional legacy lives on today in an ingenious reinvention of the original Fabergé designs which has resulted in collections every bit as brilliant. Conscious of the weight of history surrounding that work, Fabergé creative director Katharina Flohr and her team took on the formidable challenge of breathing new life into one of the world’s most iconic jewellery houses. The team spent countless hours painstakingly piecing together the Fabergé legacy to bridge old and new in classic, yet contemporary collections which have helped restore the Fabergé name to its former glory. Founded in 1842 in St Petersburg, Russia, by Gustav Fabergé, the jewellery house is best known for its exquisite Fabergé eggs, jewellery pieces and decorative items such as cigarette cases and carved parasol handles. Peter Carl Fabergé, born in 1846, was apprenticed as a boy to his goldsmith father. He continued his goldsmith studies in Paris, Germany and England before returning to Russia where he joined the family business, eventually taking over when his father stepped down. Extraordinary detail and an enchanting colour palette became hallmarks of Peter Carl Fabergé’s craft and he soon caught the attention of the Russian Imperial Court. The House of Fabergé became known, under Peter Carl’s direction, as an artist-jeweller, reviving the lost art of enamelling and precision stone setting. By 1885, Tsar Alexander III gave Fabergé the title ‘Goldsmith by special appointment to the Imperial Crown’. Peter Carl flourished in the role, creating exquisite jewels and objects including the legendary series of lavish Imperial Easter Eggs.

“Fabergé was a jeweller that, not only created these extraordinary objects, but became at the time of the imperial courts and the turn of the century a popular choice for luxurious presents. Fabergé was the gift ‘du jour’. If you were given a piece of Fabergé, whether that was a cigarette case or an egg pendant, you knew you were part of a set who appreciated it. It was very much a status symbol. Nicholas II gifted Fabergé pieces to the prima ballerinas of the imperial ballet. We have to understand that it was a time where all of Russia’s culture – literature, ballet, music and art – came together and rang in the new century,” says Flohr. “Today, pieces come up at auction and you might find you are holding a cigarette case that belonged to a member of the imperial family. We’ve also come across things like albums; one was compiled by the sister of Nicholas II. She had it hand-painted to commemorate the Fabergé eggs she had been given over several years. There, we found out the eggs weren’t just given at Easter but at birthdays, celebrations or just as treats,” adds Flohr.

The opulence of the Russian royalty came crashing down in 1917 when the Russian Revolution brought about the end of the Romanov dynasty and with it, the House of Fabergé. The Bolsheviks seized the Fabergé workshops and their treasures, all production was closed down and Peter Carl and his family f led the country on the last diplomatic train bound for Riga, Latvia, living out his days in Switzerland. In a legal settlement in 1951, the Fabergé family lost the right to produce and market designs under the Fabergé name. It wasn’t until 2007 that the family was reconnected with the iconic title. Tatiana and Sarah, both great-granddaughters of Peter Carl Fabergé, became founding members of the Fabergé Heritage Council which offers advice to the new company. Fabergé was then relaunched in September 2009 with

three Les Fabuleuses de Fabergé High Jewellery Collections – Les Fleurs, Les Fables and Les Fauves de Fabergé. Two years later, two egg pendants and a dozen high-jewellery eggs became the first eggs to have been made by Fabergé since 1917. Flohr explains: “W hen we star ted Fabergé came with 13 licences for everything from ties to sunglasses. The most important thing was to clean the Fabergé name and terminate those licences because we wanted to bring Fabergé back as a jeweller known for extraordinary items. “Fabergé was the greatest jewellery house of all time. We had to decide how to take this icon and move it into the next millennium? We wanted to imagine what Peter Carl would be doing if he was alive today. Rather than going back and just copying design elements literally, we wanted to

translate them. I have a wonderful young Russian head of design who has an art and jewellery background. He was educated both in Russia and at London’s Central St Martin’s College, so he has the mix of both worlds. He understands both traditional Russian lifestyles and what makes Fabergé cool today,” says Flohr, who is also a former editor of Russian Vogue. One challenge facing Flohr and her team has been that much of the original Fabergé pieces were lost in the decades following the Russian Revolution. “Very little of the jewellery is still around as the gems were taken out, disassembled and sold off. What is left are

It can also be taken apart like the old tiaras in those days that were worn in many different ways. It looks magnificent on,” says Flohr. Also launched was a stunning collection of high-jewellery eggs and jewel-studded egg pendants that can be worn in a variety of ways on silk ribbons or with tassels. The Roses Egg is a lavish, gem-encrusted pendant which comes as part of the Les Fameux de Fabergé collection and took a whole year to create. Celebrating the roses treasured by Catherine the Great, it is crafted in white gold, silver and platinum. The egg was

engraved and then enamelled with between nine and 10 layers. It is clustered with red and pink roses set with rubies, red spinels, pink sapphires, diamonds, emeralds and a rare colour-change garnet. The piece is suspended from an elegant necklace of rubellite beads and a ribbon of diamonds with a tiny ant nestled on the rosebud. A vibrant collection of stunning cocktail rings also boast beautiful coloured gemstones in the Fabergé Emotion ring series that features pink and white diamonds, emeralds, rubies and peridots. The Poppy ring from the Les Fleurs collection has a spectacular flower centre set with a pink-orange sapphire, enclosed by pavé petals set with a mixture of rare coloured diamonds. The Red Hibiscus cuff from the same collection is smothered in rubies with pink, yellow and white diamonds.

The earrings are crafted from 18-carat highpalladium white gold and feature round and pear-shaped white diamonds with egg-shaped emeralds. “The collections appeal to a very international audience and have been designed to accommodate a global luxury taste. Fabergé is a social currency for today’s inf luential individuals, a contemporary heirloom for current grand duchesses and grand dukes,” says Flohr. “When the brand was resurrected, many people had doubts as to whether

it could be done, suggesting that the challenge was so extraordinary it would prove impossible. However, we can achieve that same sort of magic and sensitivity to detail which fascinated royalty in the past. “You have to dive wholeheartedly into Fabergé. It becomes your life. This is where travel, research and reading are so vital to understanding what it means to make a piece of Fabergé jewellery today. “I remember going to see authentic historical pieces with Tatiana Fabergé. the craft. That’s what we have applied to all the jewellery we make today, from the small egg pendants to the exquisite US$3million dollar necklace. We go to great lengths and there are no corners cut,” explains Flohr. Fabergé currently has boutiques in Geneva, London, New York and Hong Kong and is now distributed in the UAE through one of the region’s largest jewellery outlets, Damas. Flohr says: “I think there is a passion for the extraordinary here in the UAE and a deep appreciation for magnificent stones and craftsmanship. Fabergé is partnering with Damas to release a selection of pieces in the local market and is thrilled to benefit from the great network of people and experience Damas brings. “This is one of the most extraordinary relaunches that jewellery history has seen in recent years. At the same time as restoring the rich Fabergé legacy, it is reviving the art of making beautiful things.”

Van Cleef & Arpels Lady Arpels Ballerine Enchantée Of special note this year from this French luxury jewellery maison is a series of enchanting timepieces in the Charm Extraordinaries collection. Drawing inspiration from creations of the past, the maison has incorporated motifs of dancers, fairies, swallows and butterflies while intricate craft skills bring beautiful touches. From engraving and sculpture on gold to enamelling and miniature painting on mother-of-pearl, the talents of virtuoso craftsmen have been employed. Each piece is adorned with a triple row of diamonds and coloured stones. The result is timepieces that showcase enchanting scenes. Beautiful dials depict lily of the valley, lotus flowers, dandelions and graceful swallows. The Lady Arpels Ballerine Enchantée timepiece is a collection highlight. The concept dates to the 1940s when Louis Arpels, brother of founder Estelle Arpels, requested ballerina motifs added to the pieces. The idea endured and is re-imagined in these timeless models. The maison drew inspiration for the mechanism from its own heritage and the Magicien Chinois pocket watch from 1927. At the push of a button, the figure on the dial indicated hours and minutes by raising its arms and this function is carried through for 2014.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Duomètre Unique Travel Time Fresh for the New Year, the esteemed Swiss manufacture in the Vallée de Joux continues to innovate with this striking timepiece in pink gold which also reflects the firm’s many technical breakthroughs in the field of world-time watches. This timepiece is the first worldtime watch that enables to-the-minute adjustment of the second time zone. This allows travellers to accurately set the second time zone on all continents and countries no matter the time difference. The watch’s Dual-Wing system is divided into two mechanisms. The first is devoted to displaying the local time while the next shows the time in a second zone. To aid the wearer, each mechanism has a 50-hour power reserve and is governed by one crown which winds both barrels. The dedicated timekeeping barrel is wound in a counterclockwise rotation while the travel-time barrel requires a clockwise rotation. Exceptional performance is perfectly complemented by an elegance that has defined creations from the Grande Maison since 1833. A globe at 6 o’clock displays a world map surrounded by the time-zone indications alongside a day and night ring. Meanwhile, the exquisite movement, Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 383, is revealed through the sapphire crystal caseback. Engraved names of the cities corresponding to the world’s 24 time zones are visible through the back.

Aigner Verona the firm’s history. Launched in the 1960s, Aigner watches can be traced back further still to Hungary in 1904, when its founder and original designer was born. Etienne Aigner was a bookbinder by trade, but by the 1940s, was creating bespoke high-end leather goods for haute couture boutiques in Paris where he served apprenticeships with Christian Dior and Cristobal Balenciaga. During the 1960s, the designer formed a partnership with businessman Heiner H Rankl and the Aigner brand was properly established. The company chose horses as inspiration and the horseshoe motif came to be synonymous with the brand.

This year’s collection from German design house Aigner includes a selection of stunning quartz timepieces for men and women. A recurring feature of the new wristwatches is the Aigner horseshoe and, as such, many of the watches boast a distinctive horseshoeshaped dial. The sleek Verona timepieces take inspiration from the shimmering waters of Lake Como in Italy with gleaming stainless-steel horseshoe-shaped cases and a diamond background setting. The luxury continues with a bezel draped in 50 diamonds while the intricate bracelets are set with 38 diamonds. The brand’s designers have chosen motifs that incorporate a strong sense of

This year heralds a raft of exciting new features to update one of the Swiss watchmaker’s most iconic collections, Aquatimer, first launched in 1967. The innovative timepiece was the company’s first divers’ watch and founded a series of performance watches built to last. For 2014, the Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Expedition Charles Darwin pays tribute to Darwin’s journey to the Galapagos Islands where he gathered evidence that was to underpin much of his theories. IWC makes use of bronze for the watch case, a metal alloy typically used in shipbuilding at that time. Bronze and blacks on the dial make for a classic finish while Darwin’s image is etched onto the case back. Also new from IWC this year is the Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Galapagos Islands which comes as the 50 th anniversary of the Charles Darwin Research Station on the islands is marked. Water-resistant to 200 bar, the powerful piece houses an IWC-manufactured 89365 calibre and boasts a sleek black rubber coating. The innovations continue from IWC in the year ahead with the Aquatimer Automatic 2000 which has been built to withstand high pressures for both amateur and professional divers. Its titanium case and minimalist design are reminiscent of the Ocean 2000, created by Ferdinand A. Porsche in 1982. Technical modifications across the entire new Aquatimer generation include a bezel with the IWC SafeDive system that protects the mechanism against dirt and seawater. Super-LumiNova® coating for the dive-time scale guarantees excellent legibility. While the new IWC bracelet quick-change system makes the change from stainless-steel bracelet to rubber strap swift and simple.

House of fashion The city’s first department store, House of Fraser-Abu Dhabi, is a welcome addition to the capital’s shopping scene. Concierge gets to know the historic brand that has chosen the UAE capital to host its regional debut In 1848, a small drapery opened its doors on the corner of Argyle and Buchanan Street in Glasgow, Scotland. Trading under the name Arthur and Fraser, the store was designed to sell a limited stock of silks, linens and woollens to a moderate-sized clientele. A reputation for good quality at affordable prices quickly established it as the go-to place for fine fabrics in that part of the city and the enterprise grew to become a

leader in its field. Today, it has developed into one of Britain’s foremost department stores with 60 propeties across the UK and Ireland and a well-established reputation as a leading purveyor of accessible luxury. Now, for the first time, the brand has expanded overseas with the launch of a new branch in the heart of Abu Dhabi. “House of Fraser has been a true pioneer in multi-brand retail in the United Kingdom and remains one of the biggest and most successful department store groups in Europe today,” says Nabil Daud, CEO of Retail Arabia International, franchisee for House of Fraser in the Middle East, adding: “We have been very lucky to have been given the opportunity to open the first international flagship of House of Fraser here in Abu Dhabi, she adds. The 100,000-square foot store is located in the capital’s new Mall at World Trade Centre, which Daud describes as a ‘destination location’ ideally suited to host House of Fraser. “The city centre has a dense population and the mall is ideally situated – just minutes away from the bustling corniche and business district. The other tenants include many popular retail and dining venues in addition to a number of brands that have been

introduced to Abu Dhabi for the first time. This complements House of Fraser very well,” she adds. The new arrival has been an extremely welcome addition to the capital’s shopping scene, representing not just a host of new brands but also the city’s first department store. “Nothing like House of Fraser Abu Dhabi has been available in the city before and the emirate is more than ready to welcome its first department store,” says Daud adding that, as a retail destination, Abu Dhabi has, to some extent, been overshadowed by Dubai until now.

“The neighbouring emirate is already home to numerous international department stores but Abu Dhabi residents and visitors are just as eager to shop as those in Dubai and there is a strongly felt need for a destination such as House of Fraser here,” she explains. The brand’s decision to launch its overseas expansion in the UAE capital is in keeping with the pattern that has characterised its strategy over the last 160 years. Since the early days, House of Fraser, known then as Fraser & McLaren, has built a business on adroitley identifying the retail requirements of local communities and responding with tailored products that cater to those needs in a luxurious yet accessible environemnt. Central to its approach is the broad mix of brands made available to shoppers by each store. “House of Fraser stands apart from other

department stores thanks to the impressive range of premium brands complemented by an exceptional level of service,” says Daud, adding that House of Fraser-Abu Dhabi offers an inimitable brand mix, which caters to the local community, expats, and tourists alike. Abu Dhabi shoppers visiting the new store for the first time will find themselves presented with a wide selection of local and international brands, including Ralph Lauren, Kenzo, Pretty Ballerinas, Hoss Intropia, Therapy, Versace Jeans, La Martina, Ush, Biba and many more. “We have hand-picked a selection t hat encompasses some of t he best local, regional and international brands – a number of which are not available anywhere else in the region – to provide shoppers with a wealth of choice at accessible prices,” Daud says, adding that

House of Fraser – Abu Dhabi is located in the World Trade Centre Mall, Abu Dhabi. Contact: 02 6277558

the new venture marks the beginning of a grand expansion plan for the brand in the region. House of Fraser Abu Dhabi will tap into the budding market for luxury brands in the UAE capital which is rapidly becoming a major destination for retail in the region. The Mall at World Trade Centre is one of several new shoping centres to launch here – in the past 12 months alone the city has welcomed the arrival of several retail venues including The Galleria, Deerfields and Eastern Mangroves Promenade, among others. Each of these destinations offers shoppers something different but none has the selling point that The Mall at World Trade Centre boasts - that of having the first and, for now, only department store in the emirate. “We believe that the UAE capital has great market potential,” explains Daud adding: “It is quickly becoming one of the region’s top destinations for shopping.”

Feel good food As demand grows for healthy, wholesome cuisine, top restaurants across Abu Dhabi are reviewing menus and altering ingredients to satisfy health-conscious diners Words by

rachel Ingram

As the sun rises on January 1, 2014 people across the world are embracing fresh resolves to transform their lives for the better. It might be a new gym membership, better budgeting practise or, in the case of many, a healthier diet, particularly following the culinary excesses of the festive season. With this in mind, Concierge has decided to explore the capital’s dining scene to discover just how feasible it is to embrace healthier eating patterns while eating out in the city. For a long time, health-conscious diners at the capital’s five-star restaurants were left to fend for themselves. Menus made no exceptions for calorie counters, organic eaters or vegans, who had to eat the offending ingredients or go hungry. Now, however, the situation is undergoing rapid change as health and nutrition take centre stage here and the capital’s five-star culinary scene responds to the demands of a budding breed of health-conscious diners with very specific requirements. Five-star restaurants around the city have begun incorporating low-fat, vegan or organic alternatives while others have taken it one step further with entire menus dedicated to special diets. Concierge talks to chefs at some of the capital’s leading restaurants about creating healthy cuisine without compromising on f lavour and why it’s important to offer healthy alternatives.

“Global awareness of healthy eating habits and the impact it can have on disease prevention, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases, has an important impact on our customer’s dining behaviour. Our second most important feedback after the quality of the food is the healthy options we have available on our menu,” says Saco Musch, executive chef at Hilton Abu Dhabi. Following pleas from health-aware guests, the hotel has revised its menus and introduced more diet-friendly meals, cutting out the calories 1

and ramping up the nutrients. Though many of the more indulgent ingredients are left out, Musch has insisted there is no detrimental effect on the flavour or texture of the hotel’s healthy versions. “All our ingredients are fresh and maintain the strong flavours needed for each dish so there’s no danger of a bland end result. The most important factor, however, is that we continue using the same ingredients that would normally appear in a particular recipe with the single difference that they contain less saturated fat, salt or sugar.” Many consumers associate healthy dining with ‘organic’ produce. The organic movement has swept around the world, transforming the way many people select, buy and eat their food. In the UAE capital, hotels such as Hilton Abu Dhabi are making special efforts to ensure menus are up to date with the latest culinary trends and organic dishes are a regular feature. An

additional culinary concern in an age where fast food is widely consumed and many lack the time to cook healthy meals from scratch, is the lack of nutrients in most diets. In an effort to address this for its guests, The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa decided to make nutrient-rich foods readily available by adding dishes by health brand, SuperFoodsRX to its menus. Diners heading down to breakfast at the hotel can start the day with an ultra-healthy breakfast by piling their plate high with avocado, walnuts, honey, blueberries and whole grains, all of which are known for their nutritional and health-enhancing values. They can also order high-nutrient dishes from menus at the hotel’s restaurants. David Contreras, executive chef at the hotel, explains that chefs create SuperFoodsRX dishes by minimising ‘empty calories’, those in sugar, other calorie-laden sweeteners and refined carbohydrates, adding instead ingredients that are rich in antioxidants and phytonutrients. “The key to the SuperFoodsRX philosophy and likewise to the

Westin SuperFoods menu, is food synergy,” explains Contreras, adding that all of the resort’s restaurant menus contain healthy options. Some of the most popular choices include the cinnamon and raisin pancakes topped with vitamin-boosting fruits and nuts and the roast vine tomato soup garlic rouille, which is packed with lycopene, vitamins A and C and potassium. Contreras adds: “Healthier doesn’t have to mean compromise. On the contrary, healthy food can be very tasty and often enhances the natural flavours of food while providing diners with enormous health benefits.” Selecting high-quality ingredients is a priority that chefs at Le Royal Méridien Abu Dhabi also share. The hotel’s executive chef Justin Galea says: “Sourcing the right produce is paramount to the success of any dish. Guilt-free dining has become increasingly popular and it is now moving beyond the sphere of being a mere trend and becoming a staple requirement from restaurants.

It is certainly the case that many diners are more aware of what they are eating today and, for me, good-quality produce is one of the biggest factors when creating healthy food, partly because, if you have decent ingredients then they require very little interference from the chef. The flavours can be allowed to speak for themselves without the addition of too many synthetic f lavourants.” The hotel’s all-day dining establishment Café Palmier tailors dishes to the health-conscious diner, especially at lunchtime when meals are often lighter. The restaurant also offers a bespoke salad service. Next door, the hotel’s new artisan bakery and bistro, whEAT, has launched a menu packed full of healthy dishes including specials such as blueberry bircher muesli, poached salmon on brown bread and a variety of fresh salads. Again, at this dining establishment, chefs are all ears. “Flexibility is the key. In Café Palmier and wheat, our chefs have direct contact with our diners and are able to create bespoke dishes adapted to anyone’s requirements,” Galea adds. Customisation is a trend that continues throughout the capital. More and more people are beginning to pay attention to their health and discovering their food intolerances, of which gluten is a common one. As such, retailers and restaurateurs have observed a demand for substituted products as many consumers cut wheat

from their diets and go gluten-free. Crowne Plaza Abu Dhabi has acknowleged this movement by developing the menu of its award-winning Italian eatery Spaccanapoli Pizzeria to include gluten-free pizza and pasta options. Carmelo Rosselli, chef at Spaccanapoli Ristorante, says: “We are aware of the changing needs of diners in Abu Dhabi and have adapted accordingly to provide a range of tasty and healthy dining options, including gluten-free dishes. The basic meal ingredients in Italian cuisine are nutritious by nature, so the flavour is already there.” Taking care not to compromise on this taste, chefs have adapted classic dishes such as the Bufalina pizza, using non-gluten ingredients to make the dough easily digestible by all. This has, in turn, become one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes. The menu also features a range of diet-friendly soups, salads and seafood dishes, all of which are easily identifiable on the menu as healthy options thanks to a special marker to guide diet-conscious diners. As the health revolution gathers force in five-star restaurants across Abu Dhabi, health-conscious diners are seeing the city’s culinary scene open up before them. It’s no longer a case of having to choose the one low-calorie option on a menu of decadent dishes as chefs are now investing time and effort into creating mouthwatering recipes that take health concerns into consideration.

Across Arabia Middle Eastern cuisine is a rich tapestry of flavours and textures – the result of countless miles travelled and centuries spent wandering the continent, accumulating culinary influences from far and wide

The roots of Arabian food lie in the geography of the region. Earlier inhabitants of the Arabian Peninsula relied on a simple diet of dates, wheat, barley, rice and what little else they could find or cultivate in the arid desert. Sourcing enough food and water to survive was a daily struggle for these Bedouin tribes, who travelled great distances across the sands, often subsisting for days at a time on dates and camel milk alone. As the Bedouin wandered from place to place they came across different ingredients and cooking techniques that laid the foundations for the rich variety of dishes that fall under the banner of Arabic food today. These influences can be felt in modern Arabian cuisines, many of which are united by common threads that recall the work of these early wandering tradesmen as they journeyed through the desert, carrying herbs, spices and other goods with them from country to country. In Abu Dhabi, visitors have access to a wealth of Arabian cuisines and can, in effect, tread the culinary path forged by the country’s first inhabitants as they journeyed down into Yemen and Oman or trekked across the vast Empty Quarter into Saudi Arabia. Here, they met and traded with travellers from the Levant, who brought with them influences and ingredients from Egypt, Morocco and other North African countries across the water, adding another element to the exotic swirl of cuisines flourishing across the peninsula. All of these can be tried here in the UAE capital, alongside dishes from the country’s own culinary stable, many of which, though influenced by food from across the region, have been kept close to home and are rarely, if ever, found outside the UAE. Read on for Concierge’s selection of some of the best places in the capital to try Arabia’s many cuisines.

Pan-Arab: Al Wanasah Walking into this cosy restaurant is like stepping into a scene from the Arabian Nights stories. From one of the comfortable majlis-style seats, it’s easy to imagine being cast in the character of a Bedouin traveller, pausing at a camp for respite on a long journey across the desert. The thickly carpeted floors, tent-style ceiling and the sweet scent of shisha in the air conjure these romantic images of old Arabia, allowing diners to immerse themselves in local culture before even trying the food. On the menu is a choice selection of mezze dishes, including fatoush salad, spiced kibbeh and succulent kebabs, savoury pastries filled with meat and cheese and an array of traditional dips designed to be shared in the centre of the table in the customary Arabian way. For a considerable time, visitors had very little access to local fare but then Mezlai opened its doors. Located in the landmark Emirates Palace hotel, the luxury restaurant puts a five-star spin on the homely dishes of the UAE, inviting diners to try the likes of hammour mafrook – a delicious

plate of local fish and cream served with Emirate bread. In addition, there are various dishes cooked in the ‘hamsat’ style, literally translated as meaning ‘all mixed together’. Moroccan: Agadir The menu at this exotic eatery offers an allencompassing experience of the wonderful flavours of Morocco, spanning Tangiers, Casablanca, Essaouira, Al Rif and beyond. Hearty tagines, fragrant couscous dishes and softly spiced pastillas that strike the perfect balance between sweet and savoury – a theme of Moroccan cooking – capture the spirit of this colourful country with vivid flavours and a vibrant mix of ingredients. The restaurant’s interior too, makes diners feel as though they have just stepped into a Casablancan bistro. North African lanterns hang from the walls and ceilings, throwing patterns of light against the ochre walls and heavy curtains separate the dining rooms from the majlis, where guests recline after dinner and enjoy traditional Moroccan

Tempting as it is to overindulge on starters and mains, it is well worth saving space for the desserts, where the chef has incorporated a few overseas influences to produce creative and delicious combinations, such as roz bil halib (rice pudding with milk, orange blossom, cinnamon sticks, almonds and raisins) or tasty Moroccan pastries filled with vanilla cream and orange blossom then dusted with cinnamon and icing sugar. Pan-Arab: Al Waha There can be few better places to experience authentic Arabian fare than in the heart of the desert, surrounded on all sides by sand dunes, just as the country’s early inhabitants were when they sat down to dine. At Qasr al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara visitors can book a table in Al Waha where Middle Eastern fare is served in a buffet format, allowing diners to sample a broad range of Arabian dishes alongside a selection of international options. Live cooking stations reveal the preparation techniques behind some of the culinary classics and a grill station serves lamb chops, kofta, seafood and more.

Lebanese: Li Beirut Classic Lebanese cuisine is given an artful twist at this five-star eatery where diners can experience contemporary variations on the country’s culinary traditions. Some dishes are more typical of the fare found in Lebanon while others display chef Jouni Ibrahim’s flair for reinventing time-honoured Levantine staples. His foie-gras kibbeh, for example, is a fresh take on the popular meat dish, which is usually made from ground lamb or beef and his rack of lamb is seasoned with zaatar, a mixture of spices commonly used in Middle Eastern cooking. A more traditional choice would be the mezze selection, which includes hummous, fatoush salad and other dishes that make up a typical Lebanese starter. Alternatively, diners can choose their own selection from the many options on the menu and begin their meal in the customary Levantine way – with a selection of hot and cold dishes to be shared by everyone at the table. Middle eastern delicacies Omani lobster: Seafood restaurants around the city serve this locally sourced delicacy, which has a different flavour and texture to the imported Canadian variety Camel meat: Highly nutritious and flavourful, camel meat is enjoying a resurgence of popularity in the UAE where it has been consumed for centuries. The Emirates Palace has added a note of luxury to this traditional staple with its camel burger that’s dusted with edible gold leaf

Mansaf: The national dish of Jordan, this tasty combination of lamb cooked in a sauce of dried and fermented yoghurt is often eaten on important religious holidays Freekeh: An ancient Middle Eastern recipe comprising roasted wheat with vegetables served with cumin, cinnamon and fresh lamb-tail fat Ouzi: Often served as the centrepiece at iftar feasts during the holy month of Ramadan, this magnificent dish features a whole lamb slow-cooked with a blend of spices and served on a bed of seasoned yellow rice

History in the making The earliest known habitation in this part of the world dates back as far as 5500BCE. However, it was in 1971, when Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi's ruler from 1966 to 2004, and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai from 1958 to 1990, set the wheels in motion with their neighbouring sheikhdoms, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ajman (Ras Al Khaimah joined in 1972) to form an alliance.

EMiRATES PALACE The iconic palace stands in pride of place at the tip of the Abu Dhabi Corniche and embodies the luxury lifestyle the capital has cultivated. until recently the most expensive hotel ever to be built, the impressive structure is richly adorned with precious materials. 12 different shades of marble can be spotted in the cavernous atrium, while the central dome holds dual records as both the largest in the world and the greatest gilded expanse ever created in one building.

SHEIKH ZAYED GRAND MOSQUE Built by the late Sheikh Zayed to help build a bridge between faiths and create greater cross-cultural understanding, the Grand Mosque is a must-see for any visitor to Abu Dhabi. The third-largest mosque in the world, this majestic structure is wrought from over 1,000 columns and 82 domes embellished with semi-precious stones, gold and marble. Inside, the spectacle is equally impressive with glittering chandeliers, spectacular floral motifs adorning the walls and a vast hand-woven Persian carpet in the main prayer hall.

My life in Abu Dhabi Nour Alhuda, personal trainer at Abu Dhabi Country Club, discusses different ways to get active in Abu Dhabi and start 2014 on a healthy note

}

1 Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque 2 Personal training session

Abu Dhabi is well-known for its opulent spas but few visitors realise how great the city also is for sport and fitness. There are parks and beaches in abundance here providing ample space for walkers, joggers and cyclists to enjoy the fresh air, not to mention state-of-the-art athletic and leisure facilities including Al Forsan International Sports Resort with an equestrian centre, wake boarding, go karting and more. There’s also the corniche – an eight-kilometre stretch running along the shorefront with dedicated bike and running tracks in addition to the large number of luxury gyms located in five-star hotels and private member clubs around the city. Physical fitness is a growing industry in Abu Dhabi and each year sees a new wave of devotees sign up to become fitter, healthier versions of themselves. I’ve worked at Abu Dhabi Country Club for nine years now and still find that every day is different, partly because each person I train varies, but also because their fitness is constantly developing so we’re always taking on new challenges and reaching for the next goal.

When I’m not training, I like to relax on Saadiyat Beach, which is one of the capital’s best spots to lie back and soak up the sun in a picturesque and peaceful setting. In the evening, I might head out to dinner at one of the city’s many excellent eateries, such as Mezlai at Emirates Palace, which serves traditional Emirati food. I also like Mawwal, the Lebanese restaurant at Hilton Abu Dhabi, where authentic Arabian cuisine is complemented by traditional touches, including shisha and belly dancing. Both restaurants are ideal for visitors looking to enjoy a taste of local culture and some great food at the same time. I would also recommend that any visitor, who hasn’t already been, goes to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque – it is a masterpiece of architecture and design – and Emirates Palace, the capital’s landmark luxury hotel is also a must-see. These two structures offer an insight into old and new Abu Dhabi, providing visitors a sense of the culture and tradition alongside the five-star facilities and luxury lifestyles that characterise this modern city.

There are parks and beaches in abundance here providing ample space for walkers, joggers and cyclists to enjoy the fresh air
