Al Jahili Fort was once the royal summer residence and a symbol of power for the ruling Al Nahyan family. During the hot summer months, they would retreat from the humid coastal areas to the cooler, drier climate of inland Al Ain, where the fort is located. Today, the old building has undergone a complete renovation and now contains several exhibitions that offer visitors an insight into historic ways of life in the area.

One of the best ways to get better acquainted with this dynamic city is to take to the skies and view it all from above. Seawings offers aerial sightseeing tours that take in the highlights while, back at ground level, visitors can explore the attractions in luxury, looking out at the sights from the comfortable back seat of a chauffeured Rolls-Royce. Excursions can be tailored to suit individual requirements - I would especially recommend stopping off at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Heritage Village, which are two must-visit attractions in Abu Dhabi. Those with a taste for sports can spend the day on Yas Island where a number of world-class facilities cater to various athletic interests. Yas Waterworld, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Yas Links golf course and Yas Marina Circuit are all one-of-akind destinations that make an exhilarating family day out. The island also boasts a beach and a park in addition to a choice of restaurants at the different hotels here. Abu Dhabi is known for its sophisticated dining scene and visitors will find themselves confronted with a huge choice of excellent restaurants. Some of my favourites include Prego’s, the Italian eaterie at Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi and our seafood restaurant Finz where firstclass fare is served in an atmospheric, waterside setting. Abu Dhabi also has a large selection of buzzing bars and night spots including Trader Vic’s at Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi, which is great for a casual drink in a lively, Cubanthemed setting. Shopping is another popular activity here with a huge number of international brand names available at different malls around the city. Some of the best include Abu Dhabi Mall, Abu Dhabi Marina Mall and The Galleria. In addition to this there are various souks, including the Carpet Souk and the Iranian Souq where visitors can experience a more traditional Arabian retail experience.

Spreading the word A powerful poetic tradition underpins UAE culture, where rhyming verse has been a cornerstone of society for centuries
As many a writer, poet and novelist has discovered, a literary career is no easy undertaking. Even when the familiar demons of writer’s block, securing an agent and persuading a publisher to invest in a work have been conquered, there’s still the forbidding prospect of convincing the public to pick up, purchase and actually read a book. In this part of the world, where support networks for writers are still in their infancy, the marathon of pen to print can seem even more daunting to aspiring authors looking to establish a name for themselves, particularly as poets. Nevertheless, poetry is seeing a resurgence in the UAE as a growing number of young bards seek to engage with society, express opinions, explore their creativity and tap into their country’s poetic heritage through the medium of verse. While some cultures have seen a steady marginilisation of the form in favour of more accessible types of literature, the Arab world still prioritises poetry. Here, it remains an integral part of contemporary communication, a feature that Talal Salim Al Sabiri from the UAE Writers Association partly attributes to the way it has been transmitted across the ages. “Our favourite verses have been passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth so we have never really lost the passion for poetry that began with the early Bedouin. Emiratis in particular use poetry to engage and communicate with society,” he says, adding: “Also, many of our leaders are poets which provides encouragement to would-be writers looking to embrace the country’s traditions.”

The popularity of poetry in the Arab world can be traced back to the origins of Islam and even beyond when it served as an important mode of interaction between Bedouins looking to assert their superiority over one another in a tribal culture. The poet, known then as a sha’ir, operated as a kind of early publicist, helping to promote the reputation of their respective tribes and establish their prestige across the Arabian Peninsula. Many of their works took the form of lampoons, poking fun at rival clans and mock poetry battles, known as zajal, were held in place of real wars to assert prominence. The emergence of Islam in the seventh century CE presided over the decline of these early styles, much of which, with their references to wine and lewd behaviour, were considered incompatible with the new faith. Fresh traditions emerged and poetry continued to flourish right up until the 13th century when the rise of both Persian and Turkish literature cast the Arabic canon into the shadows. To add injury to this insult, the corpus was dealt a monumental blow when Cardinal Jimenez de Cisneros conducted a public book burning of Arabic works in Granada in 1499, resulting in the destruction of thousands, some estimate up to a million, volumes. Though many were lost forever, scraps of these works were salvaged thanks to the word-of-mouth tradition that, though much
declined from earlier days, still characterises the spread of Arabic tales and poems today. Even after writing had become common among Arabs, oral performances remained a popular way of sharing and passing on knowledge, not to mention maintaining a link to the campfire roots of literary traditions. It’s a legacy that lives on in contemporary UAE culture where many of the myths and legends, not to mention the lives of real characters and events from history, have arrived in the present day consciousness via word of mouth. Now, of course, there are new ways to disseminate literature and local storytellers can call on the likes of blogs, social networks and online publishing sites alongside many other tools including television, radio and print media to publicise their works. These mediums, says Sultan Al Amimi, director of The Poetry Academy in Abu Dhabi, are playing a huge role in opening modern Arabic literature to a wider audience and preserving its traditions. “In the past, Nabati poetry, the name given to the traditional verse of the people, was transferred to the audience via word of mouth but these days they can see, read and hear the words, making it much easier to spread a message. Al Amimi is part of the jury panel on the prestigious Million’s Poet, a popular reality television show filmed in Abu Dhabi and described by some as a UAE-equivalent

to American Idol. The competition, which is currently airing its sixth season, attracts a huge following that grows every year – more than 18 million viewers tuned in for the final episodes in the previous series. Competitors are invited to submit a piece of poetry written in the Nabati style, to be recited before the jury, which judges not just the written text but also the oral presentation skills of the poet. “The finalists and, ultimately, the winning works, will excel in a combination of factors that demonstrate the poet’s structural and linguistic skills, his or her knowledge of the field and their style of oral transmission, among other qualities. We are looking for poets that have taken classic Nabati techniques and created something new, working traditional styles and subjects into something fresh and interesting,” Al Amimi says. Written in the vernacular, Nabati poetry reflects the style of verse that circulated among the people of the Arabian Peninsula from the 16th century onwards, though historians date

Arabic, Nabati verse captured the events of everyday life in the quotidian language of the Bedouin. As such, it provides a valuable insight into the world they inhabited, filling in the gaps left by scanty historical records of life for early inhabitants of this region. Today, the Nabati style continues to flourish as a means of discussing a diverse body of subjects that cover all aspects of modern life. One of its primary roles and a fundamental reason why Nabati poetry has retained its popularity across the centuries, explains Al Amimi, is the opportunity it presents to open and engage in a dialogue exploring the prevailing issues of the day. This, he says, is a role that Million’s Poet seeks to promote. In addition to preserving the Nabati tradition, the show aims to encourage writers to develop the historic style and create contemporary variations that resonate with modern-day audiences. It is a fantastic way to identify a new generation of up-and-coming poets, explains Eissa Saif Al Mazrouei, a member of the Higher Organising Committee for the programme. “In addition to raising the status of Nabati poetry, Million’s Poet provides a unique platform for the discovery and promotion of local and regional talent with some 290 upcoming poets introduced to the public through the show so far.” Another high-profile Emirati show, Prince of Poets, further exemplifies the preeminence of poetry in this region with audiences that

exceed 20 million viewers towards the final stages of the competition. Judges on both shows have remarked on the development in the number and standard of applicants over the last few years, particularly in the UAE, which yielded its first winner, Emirati writer Rashid Ahmed Al Rumaithi in the previous edition of Million’s Poet. At a more grass-roots level, Abu Dhabibased Dorian Paul Rogers, who runs a poetry open-mic night, has also noticed significant progress in the quality of local poetic output. Rogers’ first love was rap music but he became interested in performance poetry at college, participating in various poetry groups in his native US before moving to Abu Dhabi in 2011 and establishing Rooftop Rhythms. The first event attracted just a smattering of poets and the quality of performance and writing was not, Rogers says, particularly strong. “Fastforward two years and the original performers have come on leaps and bounds with new poets joining all the time,” he says. Now, there are more than 30 performers in each edition and between 300 and 350 spectators fill the room at the Hilton Capital Grand hotel every time. “I would say that today, though the poetry scene in Abu Dhabi and the wider UAE is bigger than it has ever been before, it still has some way to go,” says Rogers. He references a number of regular poetry nights held in emirates around the UAE and emphasises the positive impact of shows such as Million’s Poet on “bridging the divide between traditional Arabic verse and the modern poetry scene.” Nimah Nawwab, a Saudi Poetess whose prolific literary output is supplemented by her work as a lecturer, teacher and mentor in various artistic and educational fields, agrees.
5
“Compared to many other countries in the Middle East, the UAE is moving forward and making a positive effort to support the development of poetry and other creative pursuits. In the wider region, it is very difficult for most Arab writers to get noticed and many have to self-publish.” Nawwab was recently a guest speaker at The Poetic Heart, an annual symposium in Dubai that brings together eminent poets from around the Middle East and beyond. A core aim of the initiative, which seeks to promote the values of harmony, understanding and peace through the medium of poetry, is to inspire and encourage young poets from schools and colleges across the region by providing them with a platform to share their works alongside established poets. It’s one of a growing number of small-scale events that run alongside the larger government movements. Together, these bodies endeavour to foster creativity in the UAE and realise the larger aim of developing the country into a centre for education and the arts in the Middle East.

Concierge joins Hala Abu Dhabi on a desert adventure Dramatic scenery and wild, untamed terrain, underpinned by a rich cultural history dating back thousands of years, await visitors in the desert. Out here, away from the bustle of the city, it’s possible to let go of modern life and get a sense of a simpler form of existence that once characterised the way of life for UAE inhabitants. One of the most striking features of the desert is the silence. At the recent Abu Dhabi Festival acclaimed sound artist Bill Fontana exhibited a fascinating piece designed to capture the ‘hidden voice’ of the Abu Dhabi desert, which, he said, resembled the ocean. From a modern gallery in the heart of the capital, where his recording was accompanied by visuals of rolling dunes, it’s easy to agree with him but out here, in the middle of this beautiful and barren environment, the ear strains to catch any sound at all.
2
Fontana, of course, was equipped with sophisticated recording devices – the kind used by structural engineers to detect vibrations in buildings or engines – whereas the average visitor to the desert has only their natural senses to rely on. This is more than enough, however, to appreciate the drama and majesty of this ancient landscape, home for centuries, to Abu Dhabi’s Bedouin ancestors. The early desert dwellers were nomads, travelling from place to place on foot, or, if
they were lucky, by camel, stopping at night to set up camp and take shelter as best they could. Today, we can only imagine how resilient these wanderers must have been. For many on the tour, walking up just one steep dune to gain a panoramic view of the sunset is challenging enough and, by the time the group assembles at the summit, the silence is shaken by a chorus of heavy breathing. The hour has just gone six o’clock and the sun has already begun to sink towards the

horizon. In the distance, the golden dunes take on a fiery hue as the setting sun casts a pink and purple light across the sky, illuminating the sandy landscape and transforming it with a spectrum of colours. For the next 20 minutes, phone cameras click frantically as everyone in the group tries to capture the magnificent spectacle. As the daylight fades, it’s remarkable how quickly the sun dips behind the horizon. In a matter of minutes, the glowing orb has become a semi-circle, shrinking by the second until it vanishes completely and darkness steals in, enveloping the dunes in a dusky twilight. With night falling, the group heads back to the cars, comparing photos and chattering loudly as the engines roar into life. The next stop is the desert camp and people are eager to see the entertainment that Hala Abu Dhabi has laid on. Camel rides, belly dancing and an Arabian barbecue buffet have been promised and, after several hours traversing the dunes by car and foot, the group is ready to recline on floor cushions in the traditional style and tuck into a hearty meal. On the way, guide Paula Kok nevica discusses the challenges of driving in the desert. She is the first female off-road tour guide in the UAE and, though only recently
qualified, is clearly adept at handling the tricky terrain. “When I first tried it I was terrified that the car would flip or roll but once I understood the safety procedures it was fine. It’s a matter of knowing how to tackle the dunes, getting the speed and the angle right and, most of all, approaching it with confidence,” she says. It’s an exhilarating ride though not, Koknevica is quick to point out, as highintensity as the ‘dune bashing’ experience offered by some tour companies, which certain passengers may find alarming. In the desert, drivers must take care to steer around patches of soft, deep sand and avoid ‘bowls’ – sudden valleys between the dunes where, once inside, it’s hard to drive out again. The car pulls up alongside others outside the camp – a huge, tented enclosure where guests can eat and take part in various heritage-themed activities. Arabic coffee and dates greet visitors on entry, offering a welcome burst of caffeine and sugar after the long drive. The next hour is spent milling around the camp trying out the various activities, which include camel rides and sand boarding in the dunes. In one tent, a group of girls line up to have their hands and feet adorned with swirling Henna designs and on the other side of the

camp people admire themselves in traditional dress while their friends take pictures. Others head straight for the shisha area to enjoy flavoured tobacco, inhaled through a water pipe, under the stars before queuing up at the long buffet table to pile a plate high with grilled meats, hearty stews and other traditional Arabian dishes. The atmosphere is warm and convivial as people embrace the communal vibe of the encampment. Before the end of the evening, a belly dancer will come on to entertain the audience and encourage everyone to join in but just now, with the scent of Arabian spices lingering in the air and the comforting crackle of the fire where people have gathered to warm themselves in the chilly desert night, it’s possible to imagine for a moment, what life was like for the Bedouin all those years ago.

With around 87 percent of the UAE landmass to its name, Abu Dhabi is the largest emirate by a long way. Much of this is accounted for by desert, with sands that stretch inland for mile upon mile. Those with a taste for exploration will find this environment, with its dramatic scenery and rugged terrain, full of opportunities for adventure

Camels are indigenous to the UAE and were once vital to the survival of its inhabitants. Used for transport, food and as a form of payment, the creatures were highly prized and remain central to local culture today. The Hala Abu Dhabi Sunset Safari pauses at a camel farm and later on, at the camp, there is a chance to get up close to the creatures and try riding them

The desert is most striking at sunset when the sun dips towards the horizon and temporarily illuminates the dunes before twilight shrouds them in shadows. At this point, the guide parks on top of a tall dune that affords a sweeping view of the surrounding landscape with nothing but sand and sky visible for miles around. From here, visitors can capture the panorama on camera and absorb the silent scene, which is among the most beautiful in the UAE

The camp is located in the heart of the desert, surrounded on all sides by tall dunes. It is modelled on the kind of encampments that would have been set up by nomadic Bedouin tribes pausing on their long journeys across the sands. Then, the Bedouin would only take with them what they could carry and their posessions were consequently limited to the bare necessities. Food and water for themselves and their camels, a little clothing and some blankets to protect themselves during the cold desert nights formed the bulk of their cargo, which might also have included weapons to guard against unfriendly tribes and merchandise to trade at market

20/04/2014 16:46
At the camp, visitors are invited to immerse themselves in local culture for the evening by dining in customary UAE style on floor cushions and trying some time-honoured traditions. These include smoking shisha, a pipe used to inhale flavoured tobacco through water and henna, an art that has been practised here for centuries. About an hour after arriving at the camp a feast of Arabian cuisine is served, after which a belly dancer comes on stage to entertain diners as they sip Arabic coffee and tea before the cars depart to take them back to the city

For an insight into Abu Dhabi life, the city’s corniche is hard to beat. This is where everyone comes together and the melting pot of cultures that make up the capital’s cosmopolitan society is most evident. In the early evening, the eight-kilometre stretch comes alive with people as joggers, cyclists and leisurely strollers pass along the path. Others head straight for the cluster of cafés around the gateway to the beach, which bustles from sunset onwards as families arrive to enjoy an early dinner. The waterfront is the nexus of activity on the corniche and the destination for the various events that take place here throughout the year, among which are regular music concerts and athletic competitions. Elsewhere, the landscaped pathway breaks out into patches of park with barbecue stations where groups of people congregate at weekends to share a picnic in the open air.

Bookending the promenade are two of the city’s top visitor attractions, each of which offers a very different perspective of Abu Dhabi. At the southernmost tip is the magnificent and imposing Emirates Palace, the crowning glory of the city. At the opposite end is the old Port Zayed, where traditional dhows and historic fishing practices recall the earliest days of the emirate. A walk along here during a weekend evening displays the rich diversity that characterises modern Abu Dhabi and is a great way to get better acquainted with this engaging capital city.

Island idyll Abu Dhabi’s manmade marvels are well-charted territory, but its natural wonders are a better-kept secret. Concierge flies out to the beautiful and remote Sir Bani Yas Island to explore with Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara
An air of mystery surrounds desert islands. Full of the promise of adventure and the fascination of the unknown, these alien landscapes possess a strange and irresistible allure. Romantic images of undiscovered coves sheltering pearly beaches and dense jungles full of exotic plants and strange beasts spring to mind at their very mention, thanks in part, to the large body of survival literature (and television) that has sprung up around the idea of being marooned on an island out at sea. Novels such as Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe, William Golding’s Lord of the Flies and, more recently, Yann Martel’s Life of Pi explore these exotic worlds, while television shows such as Lost and films including The Beach, Cast Away and Swiss Family Robinson, celebrate these romance-laden landscapes on screen, drawing us in with gripping plots that replace everyday reality with the magnetism of make-believe. For visitors to Abu Dhabi, however, there is an opportunity to experience the real thing. Situated 100 kilometres from the capital city, Sir Bani Yas Island is one of many sandy outposts that make up Abu Dhabi’s scattered coastline but, while many of these are privately owned and off-limits, this one affords a rare opportunity for visitors to stay overnight and gain a real desert island experience.

Although accessible by boat, the quickest way to reach the island is the short and scenic flight with Rotana Jet that departs from either Abu Dhabi or Dubai. The trip takes around half an hour and affords bird’seye views of the capital’s coastal islands. As the plane begins its descent towards the makeshift landing strip on Sir Bani Yas, it is immediately apparent that, like the desert islands of film and fiction, this is no ordinary destination. A preview of what to expect awaits arrivals in the tiny airport terminal, where blown-up photographs on the wall show scenes that look like something out of an African safari park. uppermost branches of leafy trees and gazelles galloping across wide, open plains fill the frames, providing a tantilising glimpse of the extraordinary sights that await. Guests are taken by bus to the only hotel on the island, the luxurious Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara. Set between a lagoon on one side, where pink flamingos like to gather at low tide and the sea on the other, the hotel is designed in the style of a luxurious safari lodge, complete with rustic, wicker chairs and warm wooden decor offset by colourful Indonesian wall hangings. Local touches, such as the Arabian lamp-chandelier, portraits of the UAE sheikhs over
reception and bowls of dates in the lobby remind visitors that, despite appearances, they are in the Middle East rather than the heart of the African savannah. In the early morning and late afternoons, guests congregate in the central lobby area to meet their guides before venturing out onto the wildlife reserve. At first, it seems unlikely that this remote desert island should house more than 11,500 animals, especially such a diverse crowd that counts giraffe, hyenas, ostrich, gazelles, Barbary sheep and even cheetahs among its inhabitants. But then, Arabian Wildlife Park is not a typical wildlife reserve and this a big part of its charm, says Steven Philips, general manager at Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara. The park started out as a place to house and care for the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s private menagerie – a medley of rare and exotic species presented to the ruler by foreign governments and visiting dignitaries. Today, he explains, it operates as a kind of miniature game reserve with professional keepers, many of whom have come over from the big African parks to look after the animals. The keepers double as tour guides and lead excursions on foot, by bicycle or via jeep into the reserve. Experienced riders can also explore the park on horseback or simply hack around the surrounding landscape and enjoy the scenery. Between activities, guests take advantage of the facilities at the hotel, where everything, from the spacious suites and villas to the snug library and comfortable lounge area is arranged to create a sense of ease and laidback luxury.

The aim here, explains Philips, is to provide an idyllic retreat where people can leave real life outside and find relaxation in whichever of the many activities on the island appeal to them most. “On Sir Bani Yas, you can rise early for a wildlife drive in the park, go kayaking through the mangroves at midday followed by scuba diving or snorkelling after lunch and then have a go at archery before dinner at one of several restaurants. Of course, if all you want to do is lie by the pool and do absolutely nothing, then you can do that too,” he adds. Guests can plan their itineraries at the activity centre, where the list of things to do and see could easily keep visitors busy every hour of the day for a week. In addition to a number of different wildlife drives, mountain biking tours and guided treks, including a fascinating wadi walk that delves into the geology of the mineral-rich dried river beds, is the recently constructed water sports
6
centre. Jet skis, wake boarding and other noisy water sports are banned, but snorkelling, kayaking, boat trips and scuba diving for all levels is available, including courses for beginners who can start their PADI training in the centre’s dedicated dive pool. One of the more unusual experiences is the pearl diving trip, which offers an opportunity to engage with the culture and heritage of the island, where the historic pearl trade has been carried out for hundreds of years. “The local population commented that we could do more to tell visitors about the history and traditions of the island, which has been inhabited by humans since the Stone Age,” explains Philips. The pearl diving experience will go some way towards addressing this by giving guests a chance to go out on the boat and dive down in the traditional way, using a rope and weight to pull themselves towards the seabed in search of pearls. Another way to explore the history of the island is to pay a visit to the ancient Christian monastery, which dates back to around 600 CE. It’s one of 36 archaeological sites that have been identified on the island, though only this one has been excavated so far. “There were other digs underway but these have stopped for the present. We want to avoid making the island too busy wand prefer to do things in our own time, step by step,” Philips explains. This is not just for the sake of the guests but also for the animals that live on Sir Bani Yas. As Philips says: “One thing we all have to remember is that the most important thing on this island is not me and you; it’s the animals.”

The emphasis on staying true to nature is ever apparent at the resort, which has recently added two new properties where visitors are encouraged to surrender everyday concerns and immerse themselves in the beauty of the environment. The Al Sahel Villas are located in the heart of the safari park, surrounded on all sides by tall grass, trees and the occasional passing giraffe. Designed to blend in with the surrounding landscape, these secluded retreats are ideal for those looking to escape the outside world and embrace the silence of the savannah. Despite their natural appearance, the villas are furnished with every luxury, including private pools in some of the larger, family options. It’s difficult to decide whether to stay here or at the equally luxurious Al Yamm Villas, another new Anantara resort on the island. Step out from one of these idyllic private lodges directly onto the soft sands of Bani Yas beach and take in the dreamy views of the glittering azure ocean stretching out to the horizon. For dinner, feast on five-star Italian cuisine at Olio or head over to one of the eateries at the sister resort. In addition to the restaurants at Al Sahel Villas are several excellent options up at the main hotel, including Amwaj, a laidback venue that serves tapas-style sharing platters. Seafood fans, meanwhile, can book a table at Samak overlooking the pool and take the advice of the resort’s resident salt guru, who can guide them through the wide selection of salts to pair with their fresh fish. After dinner, retire to Al Shams for shisha and a nightcap before collapsing into bed ready to start the day with a big breakfast buffet at The Palm. Take a seat on the terrace and watch the sun set over the greens at Hawksbill Restaurant Luxury resorts, gleaming skyscrapers and ornate mosques are an integral part of the landscape in Abu Dhabi, which is home to some of the most striking structures in the region. Over the coming years, these attractions will multiply as the city’s grand plans for the future spring up in the shape of museums, art galleries, high-rise hotels and more. Equally worth witnessing, however, are Abu Dhabi’s natural attractions, including the lovely sunsets that light up the emirate every evening. An excellent spot to appreciate this is Hawksbill Restaurant at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club where the spacious al fresco terrace and sweeping views over the course provide the ideal setting for sundowners. The venue takes its name from the visiting Hawksbill turtles that nest on Saadiyat Island every year alongside a variety of other indigenous creatures, including gazelle and rare bird species that can sometimes be spotted by golfers as they make their way around the beachfront course. Designer destination The capital is redefining itself as a hub of luxury retail tourism as new malls pave the way for a thriving shopping scene in the city WORDS BY
RACHEL INGRAM
Abu Dhabi is in the middle of an evolution. While Dubai has traditionally flown the flag for glamour and style, dominating the retail landscape with a plethora of mega-malls and big brand names, its neighbouring emirate has remained a hub of history and culture. Now, however, the winds are changing and Abu Dhabi has emerged as a joint contender for the title of regional retail capital. An influx of smart new malls in the emirate over recent years, which will be joined by more in the months to come, has redefined the city as a major destination for retail, with a heavy emphasis on luxury. Increasingly, visitors are coming to Abu Dhabi with the express purpose of shopping in the emirate’s well-stocked malls and souks, following in the footsteps of a mounting number of top international designer brands that have found a home in the UAE capital. Concierge speaks to some of the most influential leaders in the industry about the appeal of the capital, the growth of retail tourism and what this means for the future of the city’s shopping scene.

Capital attraction Chalhoub Group is responsible for bringing a large number of designer brands to the UAE and operates retail stores for fashion houses such as Lanvin, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Celine and Marc Jacobs, among others. Each year the luxury pioneer continues to launch new brands and increase its presence in the UAE’s top malls, with no signs of slowing. Mansour Hajjar, managing director, Allied Enterprises – Chalhoub Group, says: “The luxury retail tourism market is growing rapidly in the UAE, particularly in the last two years following the slowdown caused by the global financial meltdown. The evolution in our consumer base is a very good illustration of this as visitors make up an increasing proportion of shoppers at our outlets. Depending on our brands, visiting shoppers can range from 10 percent to more than 70 percent of the total clientele.” This growth has occurred proportionally in the wake of several new high-end malls. Last year marked a milestone for luxury shopping in Abu Dhabi with several major launches including The Galleria and The Mall at World Trade Center. “Until recently the capital’s luxury scene was scattered,” says Hajjar. “Now, The Galleria provides a one-stop shop for all luxury goods in Abu

Dhabi.” The mall, which is situated in the up-and-coming commercial hub on Al Maryah Island, has had a major impact on the behaviour of local shoppers, many of whom, Hajjar continues, used to make the hour-long journey to Dubai to shop. Now, Abu Dhabi more than meets their retail needs so they are shopping in the capital which, in turn, is having a positive impact on the visitor market.

Five-star service Avenue at Etihad Towers was the capital’s first mall dedicated entirely to luxury retail. Part of the same complex as the five-star Jumeirah at Etihad Towers hotel, the boutique mall brings together a number of high-end fashion and accessory stores, haute-horology boutiques and first-class eateries, including Fauchon Le Café. Richard Foulds, head of property management at the mall, says: “Avenue at Etihad Towers attracts luxury lifestyle connoisseurs who appreciate excellent quality and detail – whether they are Abu Dhabi residents or visitors to the city.” He explains that the nature of the Abu Dhabi shopper has led to the demand for five-star service that goes above and beyond expectations. This has in turn become a key attraction for visitors. The type of customer that frequents a venue such as Avenue at Etihad

Towers is, Foulds explains, a discerning shopper with significant purchasing power and it is important to offer them a shopping environment that is, at the very least, equal to their expectations. This has to be reflected in all aspects of the experience, whether in the exclusive environment created by the mall and its boutiques, the professional service provided or the carefully compiled selection of brands available. Hajjar says: “With the anchoring of the emirate as a key retail market for residents and both regional and international tourists, expectations from this distinguished clientele will only increase and, as retailers, we will need to address them with a view to providing the most sophisticated shopping experience possible.”
Malls are already catering to demands by introducing luxury services such as valet drivers and personal shoppers. In addition, the trend for more intimatesized malls, compared for example to The Dubai Mall, adds exclusivity to the shopping experience in the capital. “Compared to Dubai and its massive retail complexes, Abu Dhabi proposes a boutique approach to the retail experience and especially in the luxury sector. The moderate size of its malls, the average traffic and the one-toone customer service approach are calling shoppers on a quest of intimate shopping, personalised services and a curated brand offering,” says Hajjar.

All-inclusive experience As the trend to make shopping a more focal part of the tourism experience grows, hotels are taking the retail experience one step further and opening boutique malls within their complexes. Examples include Eastern Mangroves Promenade at The Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara and The Collection at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort – new retail-orientated developments that feature shops and cafés in addition to salons, spas and other services. “As the number of mixed-use developments continues to rise in the UAE, shopping and tourism become more closely connected. At Etihad Towers, for example, visitors have the opportunity to shop, dine and stay in

one destination – and these together make the whole offering even more enticing,” explains Foulds.
Changing habits With the facilities now in place, Abu Dhabi can cater to a growing global trend towards retail tourism. “Shopping has traditionally been considered a secondary activity to travel, with people focusing more on souvenirs and gifts and has not necessarily been the primary purpose of a visit. In recent years, however, this concept has changed and retail tourism has become a popular leisure pursuit in its own right. Now, it is increasingly common for shopping to be a primary reason for people to undertake travel – whether for a day trip, weekend break or longer holiday.” Certain cities around the world, such as the fashion capitals of New York, Paris, London and Milan, have long been hot spots for retail tourism, but the UAE is increasingly becoming a target for such travellers; a factor the government is keen to cultivate.

Watch this face Baselworld 2014 showcased a plethora of novel timepieces set to shake up the world of horology
Baselworld is to horology what the Cannes Film Festival is to the movie industry. Trends set at the annual watch and jewellery fair determine the future of the watchmaking industry for years to come and innovations unveiled can make or break a manufacturer. “Considering that the most eminent international brands participate here, it is the business focal point for innovations, creations and trend-setting articles. Baselworld provides precisely that ideal setting with the best infrastructure and target audience imaginable. Consider it a fashion show where everyone eagerly awaits the curtain rising on innovations that will set the trends for 2014,” says Hans Klaus, Baselworld spokesman. For many brands, this year’s launches were all in the movement. Blancpain uncovered its new self-winding Calibre 1335, while Glashütte Original moved from manual to automatic for its latest PanoMaticInverse edition. Visually, simplicity appeared to reign supreme and brands such as Zenith swapped complicated dials for a classic look. A key trend across the board was the re-emergence of the extra-thin timepiece and record-breaking slim models were unveiled by companies such as Breguet. As always, a number of manufacturers reinvented their classic models, paying homage to successful moments from their history with modernised limited editions. Concierge looks at some of the most exciting highlights from the 2014 edition of the show in Basel, Switzerland.

Omega Constellation Pluma The latest addition to Omega’s Constellation family, Pluma, is named after the Latin word for feather and combines high-jewellery design with a high-end mechanical movement. The striking dial sums up the extraordinary talent that Omega has for creating elegant timepieces for women. The delicate design carved onto mother of pearl is a nod to its female muse which, when combined with the use of diamond indexes instead of numerals, turns the watch into a piece of wearable art. Two versions were created: a blue dial with a silver strap; and a natural white dial
complemented with rose gold adornment and a rose gold and silver bracelet. The model is simple and understated without the need for multiple time zones or indicators, but one diamond index is missing to leave space for the date at the 3 o’clock position. Adding an extra element of luxury, the bezel holding the face in place is also studded with diamonds. Below the surface, the wristwatch is powered by a highly reliable Omega Co-Axial calibre 8520, enclosed by a silver steel casing that’s water-resistant up to 100 metres, making it much more than just a pretty face.
Of special note this year from Swiss watchmaker Jaquet Droz is the latest variation of its Grande Seconde timepiece. Featuring the model’s signature off-centre hour and minute dials set in a figure-of-eight display, the new edition uses combined elements from the original and the 2008 sports-inspired ‘SW’ variation, but goes one step further in terms of design. Visually, the model is the height of modern masculinity. The stylish dial is made from sturdy coal-like anthracite and exhibits the famous Côtes de Genève patterning: a 3D-striped effect created through an intricate twotoned artisanal technique. The strap is also updated and the traditional leather and rubber materials have been replaced with top-quality alligator leather to suit the most discerning watch collectors.
2
The limited edition model is more classical looking than many other Zenith models and represents the perfect blend of historical technology and contemporary design

Blancpain 2014 Villeret Named after Villeret in Switzerland where Blancpain was first created, the Villeret collection pays homage to the age-old traditions of the watch manufacturer and to the art of horology in general. This year’s edition is a mechanical self-winding model with an impressive eightday power reserve, driven by Blancpain’s new Calibre 1335 movement. The craftsmanship in the dial alone exhibits a commitment to classic practices; the smooth-curved face is crafted from Grand Feu enamel that’s been fired
several times at over 1,000 degrees Celsius. The timeless look is enhanced through the use of sleek Roman numerals as hour indicators, delicate, slightly hollowed hands, simple rose gold casing and a chocolate alligator strap. On the reverse, a transparent crystal back showcases the range of mechanical feats powering the timepiece. Visually, the watch manages to bridge the gap between smart-casual and formal style, making it versatile and suitable for both night and daywear.

Zenith El Primero 410 In 1969, while Neil Armstrong was taking a giant leap for mankind onto the moon, Zenith was busy making history of its own by crafting the world’s first integrated automatic chronograph, El Primero. The model’s unique calibre, originally known as El Primero 3019 PHF gave a speed of 36,000 vibrations an hour and quickly became famed for its remarkable 1/10th of a second precision. The timepiece was the most accurate of its kind and so this year the Swiss manufacturer pays respect to this significant time in the company’s history by reviving the iconic model. At Baselworld 2014, Zenith launched the El Primero 410 featuring the same movements as the original but with triple calendar and moonphase indications on a sleek slate grey dial. The limited edition model is more classical looking than many other Zenith models and represents the perfect blend of historical technology and contemporary design.
4
In 2008, Glashütte Original caused a stir when it unveiled the PanoInverse XL, a pioneering timepiece featuring a reversed movement whereby the plates, screws and double swan-neck adjustment were visible on the dial. Six years later at Baselworld 2014, the German watchmaker unveiled the PanoMaticInverse, a timepiece that preserves the skeletonised aspect but is powered by automatic movements in place of the original manual movements. The striking wristwatch houses a calibre 91-02 and is available in two styles: red gold and silver, both of which feature a silver dial decorated with Côtes de Genève stripes and studded with rubies and heat-blued screws. The face features an off-centre dial to display the hour and minute, alongside a separate second dial and date indicator. A Louisiana alligator leather strap in black or brown completes the stylish and innovative accessory.

The Classique Grande Complication Tourbillon Extra-Thin Automatic is said to be the world’s thinnest automatic tourbillon. Relaunched this year in platinum, the innovative 5377 edition demonstrates both Breguet’s technological prowess and eye for style. While the name may suggest this is a classic model, under the surface the timepiece is packed with the latest technological developments. The sturdy case, which is only seven millimetres thick, boasts an extra-thin three-millimetre 581DR calibre movement featuring a silicon balance spring and antimagnetic steel components: an important element in modern society that ensures the movement’s protection from technological frequencies. The calibre beats at a high frequency of 4Hz and maintains 90 hours of running time, while the off-centre placement of the exposed tourbillon creates a visually striking effect. A variety of patterns etched into platinum grace the various segments. Meanwhile, Roman numeral hour indicators are a nod to the past, while the blue hue of the hands brings the piece into the 21st century. A blue sapphire on the centre of the tourbillon bridge adds a finishing touch of luxury.

Pipe dreams

Concierge explores the Middle Eastern culture of shisha smoking and uncovers the expertise required to prepare the perfect set-up WORDS BY
RACHEL INGRAM
The shisha pipe has been an integral part of Middle Eastern culture for centuries and a popular ritual for those looking to relax, socialise or simply pass the time of day. Although there’s no dispute that it came from this part of the world, the exact origins of shisha remain under debate with Turkey, Egypt, Syria and Iran all laying claim to the initiation of this historic practice. Its widespread use in this region has given rise to many different names and, depending on the destination, it may variously be referred to as shisha, hookah, hubbly bubbly and narghile, among others. All, however, refer to the same Arabian practice of inhaling flavoured tobacco through a waterpipe.

Today, shisha smoking remains a hugely popular recreational activity in the UAE and those looking to try it out will find an abundance of shisha lounges and cafés across the capital. At Shangri-la Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, shisha supervisor Ali Ramadan is a mine of information on the intricacies of smoking and preparing a perfect pipe. It is a skill he first learnt as a child growing up in Egypt. “My father is fond of smoking shisha and when I was young I would watch him set up his equipment every afternoon. One day I took the liberty of doing it for him
and from then on I began to enjoy preparing the shisha for him myself,” he says. As Ramadan grew older he developed a deeper appreciation for the art. “I learned to cut different shapes for fresh fruits and mix the various tobacco flavours together to form a pleasing blend. I became passionate about experimenting and going beyond the basics of shisha preparation,” he adds. In order to further develop his skills Ramadan travelled to Abu Dhabi where he has been the resident shisha expert at Shangri-la Hotel, Qaryat Al

Beri for five years. He takes pride in his work and is consistently pushing the boundaries of creativity to discover new and interesting shisha concoctions. He can, for example, create a personalised shisha for special occasions such as birthdays or anniversaries. “We can cut the fruit in a novel way and include special greetings in honour of the occasion. People expect cakes and cards but a personalised shisha can be a nice change – it always gets a surprised smile and a ‘thank you’. We are happy to know that we delight guests by going that extra mile,” he adds.
Whether a beginner or a seasoned smoker, shisha smoking is a practised art and steps can be taken to maximise the experience. Hundreds of flavours are available and there are numerous types of pipes so choosing the right set-up is of utmost importance. Ramadan says: “I always advise beginners to try light flavours such as strawberry, melon or cherry while more experienced shisha smokers can opt for stronger varieties such as grape, mint or apple.” Each pipe, he continues, should be used consistently for a specific flavour as swapping between them will have a negative effect on the overall experience. In addition, coals should be changed every 10 minutes while water should be refreshed between each use and ice added to keep the smoke smooth. Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri boasts two ideal settings for a shisha-smoking experience: Ess Lounge and The Pool Bar & Restaurant. Both venues offer excellent service, great views and a tranquil environment in which to enjoy a variety of shisha flavours.

Qasr al Hosn is the oldest stone building in the capital. The historic fort was first built in the 1760s as a lone watch tower overlooking the coast. These days it is surrounded on all sides by modern Abu Dhabi and lies in the heart of the city. Currently under renovation, the fort now serves as a symbolic hub of history and culture where visitors and residents can learn more about the UAE’s past. The landmark also plays host to a number of special events, talks and workshops. Of particular note this month is a talk on May 7 entitled: Lest We Forget – Structures of Memory in the UAE hosted by the curatorial and research team of The National Pavilion. On May 10 a workshop called Remembering the Abu Dhabi Volcano, will provide an interesting insight into the city’s famous fountain. Also in the capital this month is an exhibit called A History of the World in 100 Objects, held at Manarat Al Saadiyat. The event will build anticipation ahead of the launch of Zayed National Museum in 2016.

For centuries, traditional wooden boats known as dhows were relied upon to keep the UAE's bustling trading ports and markets afloat. Nowadays, waterways such as Dubai Creek and Abu Dhabi's Mina Zayed Port are key points to spot the remaining ships still in use gliding majestically on the water. Such spots are great reminders of days gone and of the deep-rooted traditions that reaffirm the country's long-lasting connection to the sea.

BILL PLEASE
WINING AND DINING
As a general rule, all hotels will add a 10 percent charge to restaurant bills in addition to the six percent fee levied by the government. Most menus state whether these taxes have already been incorporated or not but check with the waiter if it is unclear.
Although the UAE is a Muslim country, alcohol is permitted in several emirates including Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Wine, Champagne and spirits are available in most five-star hotels, but be warned, there is zero tolerance to drink-driving and being drunk in public is a crime, both punishable with a fine and, in more serious cases, imprisonment.

EMIRATES PALACE The iconic palace stands in pride of place at the tip of the Abu Dhabi Corniche and embodies the luxury lifestyle the capital has cultivated. Until recently the most expensive hotel ever to be built, the impressive structure is richly adorned with precious materials. 12 different shades of marble can be spotted in the cavernous atrium, while the central dome holds dual records as both the largest in the world and the greatest gilded expanse ever created in one building.

My life in Abu Dhabi Danny Jakubowski, group director of instruction for Troon Golf Facilities in Abu Dhabi, discusses his life in the UAE capital

I arrived in the UAE six years ago and have spent the last four in Abu Dhabi, where I split my time between Saadiyat Beach Golf Club and Abu Dhabi Golf Club. One of the aspects I like most about life here is the beautiful weather, which allows us to spend nine months of the year in the open air, enjoying all the outdoor facilities. Working in the golf industry doesn’t give me a huge amount of time off at weekends but when I do get some leisure time I take advantage of the oportunity to relax on the beach or by the pool before heading over to either Monte-Carlo Beach Club or The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort for some relaxing sundowners by the sea. I’ll also take in an early round of golf, though next time I get the chance I might try something different and go kayaking through the mangroves at dawn – everyone says it’s an amazing experience. Another passion of mine is good cuisine as I’m a real foodie and love to try new flavours. Abu Dhabi is ideal as it has such an eclectic dining scene with a great many excellent restaurants. Favourites of mine include Marco Pierre White Steakhouse & Grill at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr hotel, where I always opt for the delicious steak with truffle cream sauce and Hakkasan in Emirates Palace, which serves a mouthwatering mango duck dish.
Abu Dhabi has made a real mark on the sports scene and has attracted some of the biggest names in motor sport, tennis, golf and numerous other athletic fields For pure culinary indulgence, however, nothing beats a good Friday brunch where diners can pile their plates high with a little bit of everything. It’s not just dining. In a short space of time, Abu Dhabi has made a real mark on the sports scene and has attracted some of the biggest names in motor sport, tennis, golf and numerous other athletic fields. Alongside the high-profile people, facilities and events that have become associated with the UAE capital, there is a growing number of behind-the-scenes development programmes and initiatives designed to boost interest and participation in these sports on a community level. All this makes the UAE capital a wonderfully diverse place to live. After all, where else could you play a round of golf, watch a Formula 1 race, go wake boarding, play tennis or cool off at a waterpark before heading out to the desert for a spot of dune bashing or a camel safari? Part of Abu Dhabi’s charm is that, to us, this just seems normal.
