Montblanc has always been synonymous with innovation, revolutionising the culture of writing since its inception in 1902. Now, the latest collection pays tribute to a historic figure who also embodied a pioneering spirit. The Montblanc Avicenna LE65 Writing Instrument was created in homage to one of the Arab world’s greatest pioneers: Avicenna, the name commonly given to Ibn Sina. A Persian scholar, he was widely regarded to be the foremost writer and thinker of the Islamic Golden Age. Born in Iran in 980AD, Avicenna was a true polymath, whose knowledge and expertise encompassed everything from science and astronomy to poetry, philosophy and pharmacology. Most significantly, he is known as the father of modern medicine. Avicenna composed two of the most famous books in the history of the field: The Book of the Cure, a scientific and philosophical encyclopedia, and The Canon of Medicine, a medical encyclopedia published in 1025. The latter became the definitive medical text of the medieval age, and was still in use as late as the 18th century in Europe, providing a key inspiration for the creation of Montblanc’s newest writing instrument.
The glossy barrel’s distinctive dark hue is black mother of pearl, the medicinal properties of which were first introduced in The Canon of Medicine, and the medical text also contained the drawings that inspired the graphic patterns seen on the writing instrument. Look very closely and you’ll see an intricate engraving on the nib, inspired by Caduceus, an ancient symbol featuring a winged staff with two snakes wrapped around it that was often used as a symbol of medicine. Although the Caduceus has its origins in ancient Greece, here it nods to the impact that Avicenna had on the field of medicine. The shape of the barrel and cone is a tribute to the Avicenna Mausoleum, an Iranian monument named in the scholar’s honour, and the rich coral colour was inspired by a historic portrait of the man himself. The Montblanc Avicenna LE65 Writing Instrument is available in a limited edition of just 65 pieces. The number takes its cue from the 650 compound drugs listed in The Canon of Medicine’s Formulary Book 5, one of the earliest references of compound drugs in history and another of Avicenna’s countless contributions to the world as we know it today.

The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature returns for its 10th edition this month
A love of storytelling runs deeply through the history of the Middle East and the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature is an annual celebration of literature in all its forms. Now in its 10th edition, the programme features an incredible line-up of local and international writers, ranging from children’s book authors to best-selling novelists, illustrators, poets and social activists. More than 180 writers are set to take part in the programme, which runs from March 1 to 10 at the InterContinental Dubai Festival City. JOE HILL Author of horror novels such as Horns, Heart Shaped Box, The Fireman and Strange Weather, and Eisner Award-winning comic series Locke and Key. He will be appearing at Emirates Airline Festival of Literature on March 2 and 3
———
Tell us about your latest book, Strange Weather Strange Weather is a collection of four short novels about panic and paranoia. The idea was to write something that was all killer and no filler, stories with the depth of a novel, but which could be read in a single sitting.
How much of an influence has your father, Stephen King had on your work? No one has ever influenced me like my Dad. I grew up in thrall to Steven Spielberg, Led Zeppelin and Stephen King, and when I write my own stuff, those are the sources I call on. I want to capture Spielberg’s sense of wide-eyed possibility, Zeppelin’s thunderous momentum and my Dad’s willingness to put his heroes through the absolute worst.
Why do you think there’s been a recent resurgence in 1980’s-inspired horror? My generation has this nostalgia for our childhoods, before social media and mobile phones, when everything had more room to breathe. A new movie or a book could make an impression, not just because it was great, but because there was so much less distraction. In scary, uncertain times, people turn to horror. That may seem counter-intuitive, but it isn’t. Horror reminds us that the things you dread can be faced and driven back into the dark. That feels good. It’s a relief to confront your own terrors head on and come out the other side laughing.
“Daydreaming about the book you’re going to write someday isn’t writing” ANDREW WEIR The author of The Martian and Artemis,

Yo u’r e a n a m a z i n g success story for selfpublishing. What advice would you give to other aspiring writers?
Tell us a bit about Artemis Artemis takes place on the first city on the Moon. The main character is a woman who is a small-time criminal and she gets in way over her head.
Jazz in Artemis is an Arab woman. Was it a challenge to write from a perspective so different from your own?
First, you have to actua l ly wr ite. Daydreaming about the book you’re going to write someday isn’t writing. Also, resist the urge to tell friends and family your story. It satisfies your need for an audience, which diminishes your motivation to actually write. The good thing is, this is the best time in history to self-publish. There’s no old-boy network between you and your readers. You can self-publish an ebook to major distributors (Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc.) without any financial risk on your part.
My holy trinity of sci-fi authors is Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, and Arthur C. Clarke.
Did you feel like you were under a lot of pressure to follow the success of The Martian?
Would you go into space if the opportunity presented itself?
Of course! A success like that comes once in a career for a writer, and I had mine right out of the gate with my first book. Seeing it brought to life on the big screen was a dream. But if
I think commercial space travel is the way forward. As for me: No. I wouldn’t go into space. I don’t even like flying on planes. I write about brave people – I’m not one of them.
I didn’t set out to make a female Saudi lead. It just evolved that way. I was very nervous about writing a woman in a firstperson narrative. I did the best that I could, and I recruited every woman I know to read it and give me feedback.
Which sci-fi do you enjoy and feel inspired by?

K E V I N K WA N The author of Crazy Rich Asians and Rich People Problems will be appearing via live video link on March 3
———
As an author, what sort of input did you have in the film adaptation of Crazy Rich Asians? I was lucky to be integrally involved from day one; I helped to choose the screenwriter and our director Jon M. Chu, and I was involved in the casting process.
“I have a special kinship with Alistair, the creative one that no one in the family takes seriously”
Who is your favourite character in Crazy Rich Asians? That’s such a difficult question to answer because I love them all like my children. I feel like I have a special kinship with Alistair, who is the creative one that no one in the family takes seriously. But like a lot of people I have a special soft spot for the naughty characters — Eddie, the snob, Kitty, the social climber, and Jacqueline, who is a survivor trying desperately to hold on to the luxurious lifestyle she was born into.
There seems to be a watershed moment in Hollywood, where people are calling for more representation and diversity. Do you think Asian actors and writers are represented enough? I don’t think so. Crazy Rich Asians will be the first Hollywood studio movie in 26 years to feature an all Asian cast in a contemporary setting. It’s unbelievable that it’s taken a quarter century. I hope that the tide is turning and there will be more roles and stories that involve Asians and Asian-Americans in a meaningful way. There is so much great talent out there and so much untapped potential!
A decade of culture

What was it like seeing your life played out on film in The Theory of Everything? It was an extraordinary experience. Felicity Jones had studied my every expression, speech rhythm, and more. And Eddie Redmayne was incredible as Stephen. There were a few annoying inaccuracies, but that’s a result of the artistic licence needed when you squeeze 25 years into two hours.

With its largest and most globally diverse fair to date, the 2018 edition of Art Dubai is set to captivate audiences with an impressive creative offering sourced from 104 galleries across 47 countries. Returning to the picturesque grounds of Madinat Jumeirah, the 12th edition of this eagerly anticipated event will take place from March 21 to 24. When Art Dubai first launched in 2007, the UAE’s art scene, while ambitious, was still very much in its infancy. Now, however, cool, creative areas continue to spring up across the city. Ahead of this year’s fair, we caught up with Art Dubai’s artistic director Pablo del Val to find out more. “Dubai’s cultural scene has tremendous potential. The recent opening of Louvre Abu Dhabi, coupled with this year’s opening of the first contemporary art museum in the country, Art Jameel, is an indicator of how things are developing.” As de Val explains, the fair itself has been instrumental in expanding the region’s artistic presence on a global stage. “Art Dubai has been playing a fundamental role in developing the local art scene since its first edition. Through its different projects and programs, it has given artists an opportunity to develop their careers and furthermore is an important focal point in the region’s cultural calendar. With every edition, Art Dubai asserts itself as the world’s most international art fair and the diversity coming through participating galleries is testament to this.” Along with the return of Art Dubai’s Contemporary and Modern galleries section, this year’s edition also sees the launch of its unique Residents programme and several other exciting new additions.

/ Residents
Showcasing work across several different mediums, the inaugural edition of Residents will be presented through an intimate solo gallery presentation by 11 chosen artists. This innovative four to eight week programme was launched with the aim to facilitate conversation and debate between artists, local communities and the broader cultural landscape. “The idea behind Residents was to give international artists the opportunity to create new bodies of work inspired by the cultural scene in the UAE,” explains del Val. “Since January, 11 artists have been busy with their respective residencies at in5 and Tashkeel in Dubai, as well as Warehouse421 in Abu Dhabi. The final works created during their residencies will be exhibited at this year’s Art Dubai. These artists come from different countries and continents and we are very excited to see how they immerse themselves and interact with the local culture.”

/ Contemporary
Incredibly diverse, this year’s Art Dubai’s Contemporary section will feature 78 galleries from 42 countries. Presented across two dedicated halls, 2018 sees the return of several significant European and North American galleries – including Marianne Boesky Gallery (New York, Aspen), Victoria Miro (London, Venice) and Galerie Daniel Templon (Paris, Brussels), among many others. Add to that a bevy of galleries from the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia, as well as Art Dubai’s unique offering of Latin America galleries, the Contemporary programme draws on all cultures and creative mediums – from painting, sculptures and installations to video, photography and performance. Undoubtedly a formidable collection, it’s a fantastic opportunity to peruse the artworks of established and emerging artists.
“The gallery scene is incredibly strong and its collector base keeps on growing” Thanks to these fundamental gallery sections, as well as other forums featured at the fair, it’s clear the broad representation of cultures and artists is representative of the region’s insatiable artistic appetite. “The gallery scene is incredibly strong and its collector base keeps on growing. Dubai is a young and hip destination,” says del Val. “Art lovers are constantly getting used to new vocabularies and year after year the demand in high-level art increases, paving the way for an even stronger art scene and market.” If you’re new to the fair or aspects of the art world in general, del Val maintains the most important thing is to leave all your prejudices at home. “Enter the fair with an open mind, and when you get captivated by a work of art, take some time to think about it. Anything you might not understand may have a simple answer, so don’t be afraid to ask.” One of me I, 2017, Zohra Opoku, courtesy Mariane Ibrahim Gallery

This exclusive collection of museum-quality art will be presented for the first time through several carefully curated exhibitions, as well as solo and two-artists shows. Participating galleries will present renowned modernists from the Middle East, South Asia and Africa.

A night at the opera ———
Chief executive officer Jasper Hope tell us why there’s more to Dubai Opera than meets the eye
When Dubai Opera first opened its doors in the summer of 2016, all eyes were on this new realm of entertainment in the region, with the King of Opera, Placido Domingo himself, gracing the stage. Now, 18 months later, having wrapped up several iconic shows including Mary Poppins, Les Misèrables and Nutcracker on Ice, Dubai Opera has carved a niche for itself as a hub for arts and culture in the Middle East. “In 18 months, we’ve staged over 200 shows featuring over 2,000 artists for a live audience of over 200,000,” says Jasper Hope. “But the thing about Dubai Opera is, we always have another event to look forward to.” Following a successful run of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s popular musical Evita and Giuseppe Verdi’s Italian tale of the Ethiopian princess Aïda, everyone’s attention is now turned to Sergei Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet, performed by the Moscow City Ballet. But the year ahead at Dubai Opera has a lot more in store for its audiences. Rock, pop and jazz fans can now also look forward to their favourite artists taking to the stage for an evening of musical splendour. The upcoming weeks will see live concerts featuring soul star
Mica Paris, Brit singer Rag’N’Bone Man as well as 90’s pop sensation Steps, alongside the acrobatic action of the Shaolin Warriors, Monty Python’s comedy stylings in Spamalot and the hauntingly beautiful ballet Swan Lake for theatre purists. While it might seem like the venue is deviating from its traditional format of entertainment, Hope argues: “Dubai Opera was always intended to be a multi-purpose venue offering the best from a wide variety of genres. We vary our programme frequently so as to appeal to as many different interests as possible. It doesn’t mean we don’t have opera, ballet and classical music as a key part of our programme each year – we do – it just means that we can think broader than that.” So, when it comes to marking our social calendars, Hope promises there’s something for everyone. Being the man behind the scenes is certainly no easy feat, as Hope points out. “It takes a lot of hard work, while also being surrounded by a great team working just as hard.” But the role does come with its perks. Talking about his favourite opera moment, he says: “It’s difficult to beat the opening night. Welcoming His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum and introducing him to Placido Domingo is a moment I shall treasure forever.” As for the future, his sights are set high. All he leaves us with is: “If you happen to come across Adele’s number, please pass it on.”

For many people, the history of the Middle East is inextricably linked with the discovery of oil. But before the so-called ‘black gold’ changed the course of the region’s fate forever, the humble pearl was a true symbol of the UAE. The history of pearling in the UAE reads like an adventure story. Long ago, during the 18th and 19th centuries, many Emiratis relied on pearl fishing for their livelihood but obtaining the ocean gems was no easy feat. Pearl diving would see the men away at sea living on boats for months at a time, surviving on the strictest rations of food and water. When they arrived at their destinations, they would be tasked
with diving the ocean depths armed with only the most rudimentary equipment – a nose clip made from goat or gazelle horns known as a fatem to help them hold their breath, a woven bag hung around their neck for collecting the oysters, and a yeda, a length of rope attached to the boat that was their precious lifeline back to the surface. Many divers would reach depths of up to 10 metres and the risks were many, from shark attacks to their own failing lung capacity. Needless to say, pearling was a dangerous pursuit that required immense bravery. By the time the pearlers were ready to return to shore, the boats would be groaning under the weight of the oysters they’d harvested.

For many years, Gulf pearls were highly sought after, renowned for their quality and beauty. However, during the early 20th century, the fashion for pearls from the Gulf dropped with the rise in popularity of cultured pearls from Japan. For a long time, it seemed that the UAE’s history of pearling would be relegated to the past, existing as little more than displays in a museum. Fortunately, recent years have seen a resurgence in interest surrounding this fascinating pastime. In 2017, archaeologists discovered a pearl in Umm Al Qurain dating back to 5,550 AD, the Neolithic period. It’s thought to be more than 7,500 years old, and therefore the oldest pearl in the world. Similarly ancient pearls have also been discovered in the waters of Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah. In fact, Ras Al Khaimah is at the centre of the 21st century resurgence in UAE pearling, as it is home to Suwaidi Pearls, a cultured pearl farm. The farm was founded in 2004 by the Al Suwaidi family, whose own history is inextricably linked with the pearl traditions of the UAE – founders Mohamed and Abdulla Al Suwaidi come from generations of pearl divers, and in fact their ancestors were among the last to hunt for pearls in the traditional way. These days, sailors no longer need to risk life and limb to bring home these fruits of the ocean. At Suwaidi Pearls, farmers use modern methods for their harvest. Oysters

Abu Dhabi Pearl Journey
Gulf pearl
Taking a cue from Japanese cultured pearling, the farmers at Suwaidi Pearls plant a small mother of pearl bead into an oyster, plus a sliver of mantle tissue from another pearl. This becomes the basis of the new pearl, which is created when the oyster secretes layer upon layer of nacre around it. The implanted oysters are then nurtured for up to eight months before opening. The farm uses pinctada radiata oysters, which are native to the region. Thanks to the nutrient rich mangrove ecosystem around Ras Al Khaimah, success rates for pearl harvesting is high, and the gems can grow up to 12 millimetres in diameter. In the UAE capital, visitors can get an in-depth look at the history of pearling combined with a unique cultural experience, with Abu Dhabi Pearl Journey. The company offers guided tours that delve deeper into the country’s fascinating pearling history. The tour begins at the Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara, where guests board a jalboot – a traditional pearling boat – and embark on a leisurely cruise along the quiet channel lying between Abu Dhabi and Hudayriat Island. As they sail along the waters, the tour guide will regale them with tales of the pearling experience. The combination of beautiful local scenery and storytelling makes for a memorable occasion. Your guide will also show you how to open the oysters, and you can keep any pearls found as a souvenir of the experience.

Equestrian connection ——— In the lead up to one of the world’s biggest sporting events, Concierge shines a light on the nation’s love affair with horses
Since time immemorial, horses have embodied a sense of strength, power and grace, stirring mankind’s eternal fascination with this enchanting creature. Over the ages, their integrity and endurance have been proudly immortalised in literature and the visual arts while the unbreakable bond between man and horse can be found throughout various religious texts. While every breed has contributed significantly to civilisation through the centuries, the distinction of being one of the most inf luential thoroughbreds in history is claimed by the Arabian horse. Ancient legend imagines that the creature was fashioned from a handful of the south wind. The virtue of victory in battle was bound to its forelock, the blessing of carrying immense fortune was bestowed upon its back and it was given the power of f light without wings. The exact origins of the Arabian horse remain a mystery. But as one of the oldest companions of the desert Bedouin, these equines embraced their masters with fierce loyalty and were a symbol of prestige befitting the highest praise. Surviving the harsh desert climate necessitated the companionship of these creatures among the early tribes, but their domestic assistance in everyday life has seen a drastic transformation in modern times. Nevertheless, the equestrian connection remains significant across Middle Eastern society even today, and one such platform that celebrates this heritage on a grand scale is Dubai World Cup. Set to take the world of horse racing by storm, the 23rd edition kicks off at Meydan Racecourse on March 31.

Dubai World Cup has held the mantle of the world’s most affluent horse race since 2010 and the event remains the richest day in racing, boasting a total prize purse of US$30 million. The victor alone walks away with a whopping US$10 million, making it one of the biggest events on the global sporting calendar. In attendance on race day will be the who’s who of the UAE’s social scene, seasoned race-goers from around the world, regional and international celebrities as well as trackside fashionistas, all eager to witness the ongoing race season culminating at Meydan Racecourse. Vying for the enviable title of the fastest on the track, alongside Arabian purebreds, are the world’s finest thoroughbreds who pace through months of hard work in preparation for the big day. The sight of these powerful stallions making their way to the finish line with dexterity is what Dubai World Cup fever is all about. Although equally intense is the passion with which their jockeys race them to victory, fulfilling the horse’s destiny of bringing home riches on its back.

As much as it’s admired for its speed on the track, the horse’s captivating beauty has also earned itself a place of pride in ancient and modern art. Celebrating the enduring appeal of the equine are thousands of creative representations that can be traced back to cave paintings in 15,000 BCE. In the UAE alone, the equestrian influence on contemporary art has been spectacular. Dubai-based artist Michael Arnold, locally renowned for his depictions of the UAE’s most famous buildings, turned to equestrian art after having studied the role of horses on the race track, polo fields and in the desert. Blending his passion with an impeccable eye for detail resulted in a beautiful body of work that captures the synchronicity of the horse and its rider when racing head-to-head on the track. Elsewhere in the city, painted along the sunny streets of Jumeirah Beach Residence in Dubai is a variety of imaginative graffiti art, among which you’ll find a vibrant composition by Brazilian street artist Eduardo Kobra featuring horses running through water. The five-star hotel Ajman Saray also highlights the nation’s equestrian heritage with a beautiful sculpture of a horse, cast in gold, adorning the entrance to the resort.

The Arabian horse, in particular, has remained the perfect muse through the ages, thanks to its delicate features, which evolved in response to hot and dry summers in the desert. Inspired by its beauty, sculptor Dani de Jorge cast eighteen Arabian horses in gold and bronze in Italy. Following his death, his wife Else de Jorge completed the acclaimed masterpieces, which now proudly grace the entryway to Jumeirah Al Qasr at Dubai’s Madinat Jumeirah. Paying tribute to the region’s equestrian heritage, Arabic calligraphy artist Ghiath Lahham, known for his art of employing calligraphic styles to form interesting shapes and patterns, also produced one such masterpiece depicting the horse, on display across all Gallery One outlets in the UAE. In an attempt to further delve into the significance of the Arabian purebred and reconnect with his heritage, British photographer Tariq Dajani travelled through the Middle East to capture this cultural connection to horses. In a series of intimate yet dramatic portraits, Dajani captures the muscular beauty of these animals while a spirit of compassion and sensitivity reflects through their eyes. The selection of photographs, which Dajani first displayed in an exhibition entitled Drinkers of the Wind and then published in Asil: Photographic Studies of the Purebred Arabian Horse, features Arabian thoroughbreds from private stables across Jordan as well as horses found in the country’s famous Wadi Rum desert. His award-winning work celebrates the innate characteristics of his subject, shedding light on the very qualities that make the horse one of the most beloved creatures to walk the earth.

Concierge talks industry disruptions and the next generation of watch aficionados with Omega president Raynald Aeschlimann
Speedmaster Racing Master Chronometer
As the first watch on the moon, the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games and James Bond’s timepiece of choice, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Omega would be content to rest on its considerable achievements. But playing it safe has never been part of the brand’s DNA, and forward-thinking president Raynald Aeschlimann has set his sights firmly on the future. After taking over the reins from Omega veteran Stephen Urquhart in 2016, Aeschlimann, who himself has 20 years experience at the company, is now settling into the high-profile role. Rather than focusing on making his own mark however, Aeschlimann is far more interested in ensuring the storied brand enjoys decades’ more success. “I’m not looking at how many years I’ll be here, I’m not looking at how much of myself I can bring into the brand, I just want to focus on how much I can do so that the brand will grow. “We need to achieve success with the next generation, by being close to them and reaching them in their space, and with their instruments – which are predominately digital – so that we are talking to them on their own terms.” It’s this forward-thinking approach that has delivered some groundbreaking firsts such as Speedy Tuesday, which saw a limitededition Speedmaster Professional sold exclusively on Omega’s Instagram page last year. The idea, based around the #SpeedyTuesday handle used by Speedmaster enthusiasts all over the world, saw Omega sell all 2,012 pieces, the first time in its history that the brand made its pieces available for purchase online. Aeschlimann says: “We have created some milestones lately, with one of the best examples being Speedy Tuesday. It’s an area that challenges us, but I think we mastered that challenge very well. We made history, selling our first watch online. Speedy Tuesday was a watch made for its community, and was the right product for it. “This is something that people might see as a disruption, but we see it as an opportunity and a way to reach our consumers. If you look at Instagram or the digital world as just something for young people, then you’re totally wrong. “No matter what the disruptions are in the industry, whether smart watches or changing macro-economics, if you create the right products, people will still buy them. In this regard, Omega will always be strong.” With this new generation of watch enthusiasts front of mind, Omega is poised for a strong showing at this month’s top industry gathering, Baselworld watch fair in Switzerland. The brand is set to showcase the stunning new Omega De Ville Trésor collection, launched with millennial model-of-themoment Kaia Gerber, daughter of Omega ambassador Cindy Crawford. Aeschlimann says: “At Basel we will be talking about the launch of a new watch – which we have launched only in the States so far – the Omega De Ville Trésor. The new version of this classic piece was designed and made especially for ladies, and we launched it with Kaia Gerber.

“We have found that there is a great deal of demand from young ladies for pieces like this, especially those who relate to Kaia herself. The new Deville Trésor is classic Omega, but also has a trendy, fresh design.” If the aim was to appeal to a new generation of aspirational young women, Omega got it spot on with this sleek new timepiece. Re-imagining the original 1940’s De Ville Trésor, the fresh design comes in nine references with two case sizes. Like the original, the new models are ultra-thin, at just 9.75 millimetres, with an even slimmer option at just 8.85 millimetres. Elegant and simple, the ‘treasure’ reference from the original model’s French name is exemplified by 38 diamonds curved around the case, while the crown boasts a ceramic flower of five interlocking Omega logos framing yet another diamond. Other stand-out features include a mirrored caseback, dial colour options of black, taupe, white, mother-of-pearl and opaline silver, and straps in either black, blue or grey. Omega is also celebrating some major collection milestones at Baselworld, including the 60th anniversary of the Seamaster. “The Seamaster is an iconic watch. The Seamaster 300 metres has been James Bond’s watch forever and now we’re creating a new one with the rigorous tests of our Master Chronometre Certification, so a lot of exciting things are coming to Basel. This shows again the dynamism of our brand and the dynamism also in terms of our product lines,” says Aeschlimann. He adds: “We have a very diverse product line and I think it’s a strength, especially today with the brand name being so strong. A diverse product line could be an issue if you don’t have brand strength, like starting to make anything and just putting the Omega name on it. But lines like Speedmaster, Seamaster, Constellation and De Ville, they have their own spirit.

“We are very clearly an achiever’s watch, a watch that people buy because they are proud to have it” “It means we have to have dedicated people working around the lines, respecting them and passing that on to the next generation. We have sometimes three generations working with us who have trusted the brand, and we have invested a lot with our factories – last year we opened a state-of-the-art new factory at our headquarters in Bienne, Switzerland. “We wanted to open the factory exactly where, 125 years ago, Omega was created, and where our core values were formed. All around the world we are very much respected, and loved, because of our intrinsic values.” At the heart of those core values is the brand’s connection to some of the world’s greatest sporting occasions – as official timekeepers of the Olympic Games, Omega Dubai Desert Classic, and as sponsor of major swimming, athletics and sailing events. While the precision of Omega’s timekeeping instruments is without doubt the main focus when it comes to its sporting connections, Aeschlimann also sees a prime opportunity to reach out to customers. He explains: “Whether you think about the 15 years of the Dubai Desert Classic, or the Olympic Games – which we have just signed until 2032 – our main focus is taking a 360-degree approach. “Let’s take golf as an example and Dubai Desert Classic. We are involved with this event because it has the best players and it’s special. It’s “the Major of the Middle East” because, for me, there is a whole story about it that makes it very valid. It’s about emotion. It’s the inspiration. “In today’s world we are so connected and we get information everywhere. It’s far better if you can get your message to people when they are linked to you, they get
the message about a brand that has a backbone to it, linked with sports and ambassadors that people like. Our sports ambassadors are special people, not because they are number one, but because they have values and charisma that make them different. “I believe in today’s world, if you’re not creating an emotion around it, then it makes no sense, it’s just another brand that has another tournament.” Aeschlimann’s idea of a tailored approach to reaching customers is particularly relevant in this region, he explains: “The Middle East market has always been a special part of our business, it is important in terms of what’s happening in Dubai and throughout the GCC. “There’s not one country in the GCC where we don’t have a store or a franchise boutique. Dubai is a major city because of what’s happening here in terms of fashion and in terms of luxury. The Middle East is important, from the people living here to the tourists, it’s an almost perfect mix.” He adds: “We are very clearly an achiever’s watch, a watch that people buy because they are proud to have it. It’s a watch that you wear with pride. For some of our competitors, you wear the watches just because you want to show off, but we are not an arrogant brand. “I think our value is demonstrated when you think about the evolution of our watches – the continuity and coherency we bring to our lines. Our watches are not just another piece of branding or a sign of something. That’s what makes the difference.”

Think outside the box ———
It might be the mega malls that make all the headlines, but the UAE is also home to an alternative shopping scene for those in search of a different retail experience

Think of the things that the UAE is famous for, and chances are that shopping will appear pretty high up on that list. The region is world-renowned for its retail scene. The Dubai Mall, which this year celebrates its 10th anniversary, boasts around 1,200 stores (not to mention an ice rink and a record-breaking aquarium), while Yas Mall is a 40 million square foot development that’s home to the region’s biggest entertainment zone with a direct route to Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. However, shoppers who don’t venture beyond these super malls are missing out. Recent years have seen the launch of trendy alternative shopping areas throughout the cities, where cool, independent brands live alongside high-end labels, and a host of dining and entertainment options make for a fully fledged lifestyle destination that’s more than just a place to browse. Elsewhere, the UAE’s traditional markets in Dubai and Abu Dhabi remain worthy shopping destinations in their own right, and a wander through these bustling souks can unearth unexpected treasure in the form of memorable keepsakes. Many shoppers are also looking beyond traditional stores when it comes to their everyday grocery shopping, leading to a thriving farmer’s market scene, where happy shoppers can spend their weekends picking up their favourite produce straight from the source. Here are a few of our favourite alternative shopping spots around the UAE.
Cool, independent brands live alongside high-end labels 4
/ Strolling the souks
The traditional markets or souks of the UAE have always formed an integral part of the region’s history, and they continue to be a popular shopping destination. Back in the day, they were a place to haggle for spices, fabrics and even carpets, whereas nowadays these traditional market stalls exist alongside more modern outlets offering contemporary wares and kitsch keepsakes. Abu Dhabi’s Central Souk Market makes for an enjoyable browse, with plenty of modern amenities on offer although it is inspired by the souks of a bygone era, while the capital’s Iranian Souk is known as the go-to venue for carpet shopping. Meanwhile in Dubai, the Textiles Souk, Perfume Souk and Spice Souk offer a cultural experience – one that couldn’t be further from the typical mall trawl.

/ Box Park
It’s been almost three years since BoxPark changed the landscape of the UAE’s shopping scene forever. While Dubai was accustomed to mega malls that operated on a ‘bigger is always better’ ethos, the hip Al Wasl Road shopping complex offered something different. Boasting distinctive stores housed in colourful shipping containers, it has an edgy, urban energy. Chic fashion boutiques share ground space with luxury watch stores and quirky boutiques. Australian stationery and homeware shop Typo is a popular haunt, as is The Urbanist, a fashionista’s dream that stocks high-end labels such as Missoni, Marni and Anya Hindmarch all under one roof. There are multiple cafes to choose from to fuel your shopping trip, mostly casual spots for grabbing a quick bite: Toronto-born Big Smoke Burger provides tasty, high quality fast food. After a stroll around BoxPark, grab a table outside Grom, home of delicious Italian gelato, and feast on scoops of the sweet treat while enjoying the sights and sounds of Al Wasl Road.

/ City Walk
It’s difficult to summarise City Walk as the shopping destination is so much more than simply a place for a spot of retail therapy. Since the second phase of the development opened in 2016, it’s become one of Dubai’s most popular weekend spots, with a host of family-friendly entertainment alongside the shops, including the groundbreaking indoor rainforest Green Planet; ultimate gaming destination Hub Zero; and even a Roxy Cinema, to name a few. The store selection is a mix of instantly recognisable international brands such as Michael Kors and Calvin Klein, as well as quirkier high-end labels such as chic French brand Maje and New York favourite Rag & Bone. For beauty lovers, City Walk boasts a huge Sephora as well as the largest Lush store in the Middle East. On weekends, the green outdoor spaces often play host to live cultural entertainment, and while the weather is cool, many of the restaurants and cafés offer outdoor seating so you can enjoy a relaxing al fresco meal while you watch the world go by.

/ The Beach JBR
A veritable tourist hotspot, the Beach JBR provides the labels shoppers love with stunning ocean views that Dubai is known for. Visitors can stroll along the promenade, which is peppered with a mix of high-street shops and boutiques, interspersed with chic cafés and restaurants. Offering an alternative to the colossal retail outlets of Dubai’s malls, The Beach is chilled-out, beachfront shopping at its best. Much like Dubai’s more traditional shopping centres, entertainment is also offered, with a cinema, play areas, green spaces and outdoor cinema all set against a canvas of sea, sand and palm trees. It’s also the perfect spot to claim a patch of sand for sunbathing and looking out across the water at Ain Dubai, the world’s biggest observation wheel, which is taking shape on Bluewaters Island, one of the latest lifestyle destinations to develop in Dubai. 12

Given its desert location, Dubai’s abundance of produce markets is nothing less than impressive. During the cooler months, outdoor areas such as Al Barsha Park and Zabeel Park in Dubai, and Umm Al Emarat Park in Abu Dhabi, come alive with activity on the weekend, as shoppers browse an array of fruits and vegetables, alongside trendy foodtrucks and market stalls from local artisans selling their wares. Business Bay’s Farmers Market on the Terrace is also hugely popular, thanks to its locally grown, organic produce that allow buyers to eat seasonally.

Social by Heinz Beck may be a UAE restaurant, but the chef at its helm has an impressive international pedigree. The German-born Heinz Beck has fronted award-winning restaurants all over the world, from Tuscany and the Algarve to Tokyo and Rome, where he is currently based at Michelin-starred La Pergola Restaurant in the Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria. Who better then, to create the Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah’s authentic Italian restaurant? Social by Heinz Beck has been open for more than three years, bringing contemporary, high-end Mediterranean cuisine to the luxurious Dubai hotel. Much like its New York predecessor, the Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah offers a sense of old-world glamour, a fact reflected in the refreshingly understated elegance of its restaurants. As for the food itself, the dishes at Social by Heinz Beck are a far cry from the cheese and carb laden plates of lesser Italian restaurants. There is a lightness and freshness to the menu that puts it a cut above its Dubai contemporaries. Here, the convivial chef tells us about his plans for 2018, his thoughts on the Dubai dining scene and what, in his opinion, makes a perfect meal.
What can we expect from Social by Heinz Beck this season? “I visit Dubai at least six times a year to manage the restaurant, and this includes getting the menu ready for seasonal changes. Right now, we are trying to use more winter vegetables - we have some beautiful tortellini with pumpkin, some lovely white truffle. Even though Dubai doesn’t really get cold and have a proper winter.”

“As a chef, I really believe that you have to remain true to your vision” 6
Do you have a favourite dish on the menu? “Would you ask a mother who her favourite child is? My dishes are like my kids, I love them all. If I didn’t love them, I wouldn’t put them on the menu.” What makes the perfect meal? “A perfect meal is one where afterwards, when you go home, you feel happy. You sleep well, you’re energised when you wake up. And of course, it’s important that the food isn’t too heavy, because then it’ll make you tired and you won’t be very good at conversation over dinner. People think that Italian food is rich and heavy – big bowls of pasta filled with cream and cheese. But that’s not how Italians eat, and that’s not how I cook. The Mediterranean diet is one of the healthiest in the world. That is the kind of food I make, and that’s what you’ll find at Social by Heinz Beck.” Where do you get your inspiration from as a chef? “Every day, I’m experimenting in the kitchen, creating new dishes and then I’ll get in touch with my team and have them recreate it with the local ingredients. I’m inspired by my raw materials – I like to leave ingredients as untouched as possible, so that they speak for themselves. That’s why I only use the best.” What do you think of the current dining scene in Dubai? Do you think the city is ready for its first Michelin star? “I’m not sure if and when the Michelin guide will come to Dubai. There are more new concepts popping up all the time, but as a chef, I really believe that you have to remain true to your vision. At the end of the day, your customers will show you whether or not you’re doing things the right way. We have a very loyal customer base, and a big percentage of our clientele comes from outside the hotel, which I think is a great sign of our quality. ”
How do you deal with the stress of being a high profile chef? “You have to think positive. If you’re not finding solutions for the problems, you’re part of the problem. The thing is, I’m not stressed. When chefs only care about being the best, they’re stressed from morning until night. They don’t perform well, they run down their staff and they burn out. What I care about is making our guests happy. I want to inspire my team, give them something to believe in, so that they are motivated to grow every day, and one day they will arrive where they want to be.” 04 8182222 or

Unravelling the enigma ——
Palazzo Versace Dubai’s much-talked about restaurant Enigma paints a picture of Iran in the Middle Ages to present the season’s star attraction – authentic Persian food – in true Versace style
Locals will tell you that one of the best ways to soak up Dubai’s global vibe is exploring the emirate’s multicultural gastronomic offering. From hidden gems in the city’s historic quarter to five-star restaurants offering global f lavours, there’s truly something for everyone. And so, with an intent to seek out something we’ve never tried before, we head for Palazzo Versace Dubai to feast on Enigma’s ‘Taste of Persia’ menu.

Chef Mansour Memarian
Ghorme Sabzi
Gracing the kitchen this time around is Michelin starred chef Mansour Memarian Set in Dubai’s Culture Village, Palazzo Versace Dubai is a fitting tribute to the very essence of brand Versace. From its magnificently lit facade, resembling a 16th century royal palace, to the fine Italian furnishings, every corner conveys that the experiences waiting inside will be far from ordinary. Quaint and intimate, Enigma’s interiors have a surreal ambience featuring dim lighting with candles and lamps as well as traditional arabesque hints in its décor. But you’ll easily find the magical views of Dubai Creek from the al fresco deck competing for your attention. Torn between our options, we finally choose to stay indoors, but on a cosy table for two by the window to take in the best of both worlds. Trying a new cuisine for the first time can be both exciting and overwhelming, especially when you’re diving into a menu with unfamiliar names. Thankfully, the cheerful manager Abdel offers to bring to our table Enigma’s signature dishes, which he confidently claims will set the bar high on Persian dining. Within minutes, Maksym, our server for the evening, greets us with a rather unique dish. Mounted on a wooden crate is a variety of fresh herbs served alongside walnuts, olives, pickles, homemade Persian cheese and freshly baked Persian bread. We are told that the assortment, known as sabzi khordan,
represents the use of fresh ingredients throughout the menu and will remain a firm fixture on our table to serve as a palate cleanser between courses. Maksym then proceeds to pour water over the greens, instantly revealing the evening’s first theatrical element – vapours from dry ice within the crate taking over our table. The enigma was beginning to unfold. The launch of Palazzo Versace Dubai’s star restaurant in 2016 brought with it a new concept to the region, one that would see lesser explored cuisines being presented in a series of episodes with themes, guest chefs, and the venue’s decor changing every few months. Enigma’s Persian tale follows its Spanish, Nordic and Turkish chapters, helmed by international culinary experts. Gracing the kitchen this time around is chef Mansour Memarian, formerly of the Michelin starred Jagdhof Glashütte in Germany, who personally designed the menu to leave visitors with an authentic Persian experience. We are told that Memarian’s approach is all about highlighting classic recipes and cooking styles dating back centuries. So while the flavours remain traditional, it’s the presentation of the dish that adds a contemporary touch. Our journey towards unravelling the mysteries of Persian cuisine begins with a mix of hot and cold appetisers, which, thanks to its quantities, could easily pass as mains. We are served two different salads - the salad shirazi, a yoghurt-based mix of cucumbers, tomatoes and onions as well as the salad chupan, which takes the unique combination of watermelon and cheese to a whole new level. Also getting our taste buds going is the grilled eggplant mash called mirza ghasemi, which instantly broke our spell of several failed experiments with eggplant. Warm and comforting, every bite has you reaching for more. So if you’ve never been a fan of this vegetable, a trip to Enigma might just change that. Our next course sees us tucking into the nargesi, a traditional dish of farm eggs served on a bed of melted baby spinach with confit potatoes. Accompanying the dish are two delicious flavoured yoghurts, one with beetroot and another with grated cucumber, topped with delectable vegetarian caviar, prepared fresh within Enigma’s kitchens.

Paired with these dishes are exquisite cocktails from Enigma’s beverage menu, which reads like an ancient textbook of Iranian poetry. Based on the beverage expert Jessie’s recommendations, we try the Layla and Majnun, a refreshing blend of fresh fruit essences and vodka as well as the Hazar Afsnah, which uses gin fused with spiced Persian tea. Moving on to our mains, we stick with our decision to let the experts call the shots, who then bring a selection of dishes from the menu. There’s so much to choose from, you’ll easily find yourself spoilt for choice. But we’d definitely recommend the spread that takes over our table, filling the space with aromas of Middle Eastern spices. Served with a portion of saffron rice is the delectable ragout with lamb, full of flavour. And as though this isn’t enough, on a warm grill are succulent lamb and beef kebabs, so tender they easily come off the skewer and melt in the mouth. With all that indulgence, leaving room for dessert does raise some questions. But passing off Enigma’s traditional specialities is not an option, especially considering the fact that dessert is prepared on your table in such theatrical fashion. We opted to share the faludeh, which sees the chef mix saffron ice cream with glass noodles, rosewater and homemade syrup, and instantly cool it with liquid nitrogen; leaving cold vapours to once again engulf our table. A sweet and sour treat, every bit is as delicious as it is visually appealing, bringing the evening to an end on the perfect note and truly setting the city’s bar infinitely high when it comes to Persian dining. President - Emerging Markets, PANDORA talks to Concierge about his outdoor lifestyle and favourite places in Dubai
Explosion of Love Collection
I’ve been doing business in Dubai for the last 15 years, but I decided to move here two years ago. I realised that the Middle East was one of our most vibrant emerging markets, particularly the UAE, and I wanted to be in the middle of it. Dubai is a very promising place for PANDORA - it’s an intense market with a high demand for jewellery from both visitors and residents alike, and a diverse population. With so many different tastes it can be a challenge, but as long as you remain true to yourself and maintain a strong sense of who you are as a brand, I think it is possible to succeed. I love the lifestyle here, the weather for most of the year makes it easy to live outside. You can be active, you can meet friends for barbecues, you can go to the desert or to the beach. In Dubai, it feels like everything is designed for your comfort and your adventure. I love that I can drive for half an hour from my house and be in the middle of a vast desert. It’s so revitalising and energising. I usually go on desert adventures with my son. My family loves the beach too, whether it’s hanging out with friends at JBR or going down to Kite Beach, grabbing a burger from Salt and relaxing. We really are spoilt for choice here in Dubai. Everyday life almost feels like a holiday. When it comes to dining out, my office is in Dubai Marina and I love Pier 7 – lots of good restaurants, great location and beautiful views. Ramusake and Maine Bar and Grill in the Doubletree by Hilton JBR are both very cool options in JBR too. If you want to enjoy one of the classic Dubai experiences, I would recommend booking a table a BiCE Mare in Souk al Bahar, because The Dubai Fountain show is unmissable. And then there’s Zuma. I’ve been visiting it for the last 10 years, and it’s still the best restaurant in the city in my opinion. In terms of more off-beat choices, I really love Maison Mathis. It’s a Belgian restaurant in Arabian Ranches, and it’s just fantastic – the food, the terrace, the live music a few nights a week. It’s a uniquely laidback restaurant for Dubai. In Dubai, there are so many out of the ordinary experiences - we’ve done the skydive with Skydive Dubai, and we’ve also done a sunset cruise along Dubai Canal, which was just incredible. In my job, I spend a lot of time in the malls everyday, so I'm not that into shopping on the weekends. Having said that, I do really like City Walk, especially during the cooler months. There are some great, unusual brands, restaurants with nice outdoor terraces, a cool cinema. And my kids are teenagers, so they love Hub Zero.
