WELCOME TO COnCiErgE This issue of Concierge is a special one as it marks the magazine’s eighth anniversary. Over the past 97 issues we have endeavoured to showcase some of the biggest attractions in the emirate, from international events such as the Dubai World Cup, the world’s richest horse race, to news of world-record-breaking developments such as the opening of Burj Khalifa. Of course, returning visitors will be all too familiar with the emirate’s accolades, but for those new to the destination, we’d like to introduce you to some of its homegrown talent. For Made in the UAE on page 26 we tracked down the UAE’s top fashion designers and quizzed them on everything from couture creations to style inspirations. Intrepid travellers will be pleased to hear that while Dubai is often described as a city for drivers, there are also a variety of areas that can be explored on foot. In Walk This Way on page 52 we give you the lowdown on the best pedestrianfriendly spots in the city. As September is still a warm month, some visitors may prefer to explore the emirate after the sun goes down so turn to page 64 and check out all the best nocturnal activities that Dubai has to offer. For quick information on where to stop and what to visit, simply turn to The Guide with begins on page 91. With listings on everything from gourmet restaurants to cultural activities, you have all the knowledge at your fingertips to create a bespoke stay. ASK THE CONCIERGE MANI K ANDAK AN, HE AD CONCIE RGE AT HOTE L PULLMAN DUBAI MALL OF THE E MIRATE S, GIVE S T IPS TO TRAVELLE RS
There are so many amazing things to see in Dubai that it’s sometimes hard to choose for guests when they ask, but I think all visitors should see Dubai from above during their stays here. When I am asked to make a recommendation I suggest the 24th floor of our hotel where our pool and spa is located. Since it is the highest building in the area, it affords one of the most stunning views of the city. You can see Burj Khalifa, Burj Al Arab and Palm Jumeirah in the distance. Should guests prefer to venture out of the hotel I would suggest At the Top at Burj Khalifa. The observation deck is located on the 124th floor and gives way to stunning views of the entire city and beyond. For retail therapy, the Mall of the Emirates has over 500 shops to choose from and carries many of the top international brands. In this mall you will also find Ski Dubai which is the first indoor ski slope in the UAE and caters for all ages and abilities. Another adrenaline-filled spot is Wild Wadi water park, located between Jumeirah Beach Hotel and Burj Al Arab on Jumeirah Beach Road. Nightlife is a big part of Dubai culture and our concierge desk is here to help. We show guests the options, answer questions and then help them make a choice about where to spend the evening. We also like to mention our bar, Vantage, which is proving to be a very popular spot with visitors. For a dose of culture, guests should head to the Heritage and Diving Village in Bastakiya where there are plenty of architectural highlights of ‘old’ Dubai. The Dubai Museum, which is also found in the Bastakiya quarter, is another great way to see how the city has evolved from its Bedouin roots. For those who don’t mind travelling further afield, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is filled with cultural promise.

WORLD RENOWNED
Of all the incredible developments in Dubai, The World is possibly the most ambitious and daring. An artificial archipelago of various small islands, constructed in the rough shape of a world map, it is located four kilometres off the coast of Dubai and is generally thought to be one of the city’s most awe-inspiring spectacles. While much of the area is currently under development, various ‘countries’ have set the pace, with work underway on luxury villas and hotels. To get a glimpse of this jaw-dropping project, visitors to Dubai have the opportunity to sail around the islands on a unique leisure cruise. The cruises, under the brand name ‘Cruise with Nakheel’, tour the inner waters of Palm Jumeirah’s crescent, offering a new perspective on this flagship development. Made in the Uae Hailing from the Middle East, these talented designers are now gaining international recognition for their couture creations
Q words by Chanelle Tourish
The fashion scene in the UAE has captured the imagination of style mavens around the world due to its unique blend of traditional dress and high-end international brands. Local women are renowned for teaming their abayas with the latest Christian Louboutin heels and Louis Vuitton handbags, while the melting pot of other cultures and nationalities who reside here inspire a diverse range of trends. This, added to the success of home-grown events such as fashion weeks for both Abu Dhabi and Dubai, is helping to inspire a new generation of designers eager to put a stamp on the international fashion scene. The haute couturier One of the UAE’s most celebrated designers, Furne One, owner of Amato Haute Couture, takes a bespoke approach to fashion by producing extravagant hand-stitched designs that are a hit with the international elite. Hailing from the Philippines, Furne, who is based in Dubai, has won fans from around the world with his extravagant and artistic designs and carved an enviable path to success. “When I was young I would spend hours marvelling at both my mother’s and grandmother’s wardrobes. As I got older I realised that if I was ever going to be somebody when I grew up it would have to be a fashion designer. I started out by working for other designers and established labels, but my first real break came when I won MEGA magazine’s ‘Young Designer of the Philippines’ in 1994 and then completed my apprenticeship with designer Josie Natori,” says One. The talented designer opened his first boutique, Amato, in Dubai in 2002 producing hand-stitched designs for an elite clientele. “Women in the Middle East are very fashionable. In terms of glamour and style they are highly evolved, totally interesting and very much haute couture. An Amato woman is someone who knows what she
wants. She isn’t afraid to express herself and she isn’t bound by conventional restraints. Most of all she is someone who loves herself and celebrates the power of her femininity,” says One. In 2008 the designer’s imaginative creations caught the eye of the European fashion elite working on reality television show Germany’s Next Top Model and he was invited to be a special guest designer in the season finale alongside supermodel Heidi Klum. This helped propel the designer onto the international fashion scene and soon he was styling stars including Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez. His current collection is inspired by a famous Dutch dancer Mata Hari. “I draw inspiration from unlikely sources like music, cinema, cosmic mysticism, vintage and gothic images,” he says. With ambitious plans to expand, 2012 has been a busy year so far for One, having recently opened the brand’s first boutique in Los Angeles, US. However, as true One fans will know, his roots will always lie firmly in the UAE. Furne One’s Amato Haute Couture boutique is located at Al Hana Centre, Dubai. See amatohautecouture.com

Marina Qureshi draws on her childhood in A l A in as inspiration for her elegant and feminine eveningwear, which is attracting the attention of Hollywood’s finest. She may only have graduated from the Middle East’s leading fashion design institution, ESMOD Dubai, just two years ago, but up-and-coming designer Qureshi has already achieved remarkable success in the fashion world. Growing up in Al Ain, the Asian-British designer says she dreamt of working in a creative environment from a young age. “I always wanted to do something related to the arts. I struggled to choose whether to pursue interiors or fashion, but eventually set my heart on fashion design when I was 15 and it was the best decision I’ve made,” she says. Graduating from ESMOD in 2010 with a degree in fashion design and pattern making, Qureshi’s final student collection was sponsored by international shoe brand Kurt Geiger – a huge accomplishment. While studying in the UAE, the talented artisan nurtured her love for art, creativity and fashion and to this day she still gives thanks to the country that kick-started her career. “It would be very easy to criticise the Middle East fashion scene, but I embrace it for what it is: enthusiastic, bold and hungry for new designers. I have been overwhelmed by the support and openness from the region and I believe that you would be hardpressed to find this in another big city,” she says.

The golden girl Born and raised in Abu Dhabi, Dania Khan developed a love for the arts from a young age and is now considered one of the region’s most promising stars. An Iraqi designer who grew up in Abu Dhabi, Khan’s fashion inspiration falls close to home with her mother who she describes as a constant symbol of style and elegance. “From my early childhood it became obvious that my mind was all for the arts and fashion fascinated me,” she says. “My parents had a very good social life, in and out of the country. I would watch my mother, who had a naturally impeccable style and learn from her.” A fter st udying fashion design and marketing at the American University in London, Khan moved to Paris to further her studies at the Paris Fashion Institute, culminating with an internship at a Parisbased fashion house. Returning to the UAE with a wealth of experience under her belt, Khan produced her first collection in 2004 for private viewing, ‘Chic Afrique’. Hard work garnered her recognition and she went on to compete
in a fashion reality TV show in Lebanon, Mission Fashion, under the watchful eye of fashion legend Elie Saab. Soon after, Khan was seconded to work for the well-respected fashion house, Bugatti and thus began her career as a merited professional designer. “My brand is for elegant, sophisticated women, who embrace their femininity and who love and understand fashion and know how to express their feelings through what they wear,” she says. Over the course of a few years, Khan designed and worked on over 1,500 custommade couture pieces. One of her more recent collections, ‘A Crush on Colour’, is a glamorous eveningwear couture collection inspired by the ’50s. She says: “Each piece is quite simple yet has a distinctive detail. It has a very colourful palette, but with the summer season here I want women to feel fresh. The fashion scene in the Middle East is huge and women in the region are beautiful in their own right,” she continues. “They simply love fashion and being stylish is second nature to them.” Dania Khan is available at O Concept Boutique, Dubai. After studying fashion design and marketing at the American University in London, Khan moved to paris to further her studies

Returning to her British roots, Qureshi continued her training at the prestigious Central Saint Martins in London before becoming an intern under A lexander McQueen and backstage at London Fashion Week. With impressive experience under her belt, she set about launching her debut collection, Marina Qureshi London, in 2011. “Inspiration for my designs is an organic process and it generally starts with visualising the kind of woman I want to see wearing my creations. A Marina Qureshi woman is one who carries herself with confidence and grace. My current collection has a very sophisticated air to it,” she explains. Her elegant and feminine eveningwear is even attracting attention from Hollywood, with E!’s Catt Sadler wearing a red dress from her second collection at this year’s Oscars. With a luxury footwear collection and a diffusion line on the horizon, there’s much more to come from the girl who grew up in the Garden City (as Al Ain is often described). Marina Qureshi’s collection is available from online boutique ASNedits (asnedits.com). See marinaqureshi.com

A brief history of time Concierge visits the past and present of renowned Swiss watch brand jaquet droz
Q Words by rob NICHoLAs
1
Everyone loves a good tale and when it comes to the world of horology, there are few stories more compelling than that of Pierre and Henri-Louis Jaquet-Droz who built the Jaquet Droz brand along with partner JeanFrédéric Leschot. Pierre Jaquet-Droz (1721-1790) was a pioneering clockmaker and inventor and the first to develop and export his luxury pieces internationally, with marked success in China. His is a tale comprising all the best elements of drama – ascendance to fame, success, tragedy – with fleeting roles played by royal figures such as Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, as his enterprises became famous across the royal courts of Europe. In the world of clockmaking, Pierre Jaquet-Droz shone brightly, achieving success that many family manufacturers achieved only after generations of toil – or never at all. Elitest, exacting and with ingenious attention to detail, Pierre took the mechanics of time and movement to new levels. He also knew how to attract the attentions of the wealthy and discerning, combining rare skills of invention, technical know-how and a mind that could think creatively, marketing the products of his labour far and wide.

This was the story revealed to selected media in Switzerland to celebrate the legacy and revival of Jaquet Droz in the world of watchmaking. Concierge was lucky enough to be among them and learn more about the various signatures of Jaquet Droz that have survived time and enabled Swatch Group to extend its DNA and develop the contemporary incarnation of the brand. In a world that focuses more on the future than the past, one of the more alluring attractions of watchmaking is its adherence to tradition. Discerning buyers purchase from manufacturers who both develop and build their products by hand and from those that possess a rich legacy reflected in the timepieces available today. This is a factor not lost on the Swatch Group that added the Jaquet Droz brand to its portfolio in 2000 and painstakingly rebuilt the brand, before introducing it once again to demanding enthusiasts. No wonder then that the first stop on our Swiss itinerary of discovery was a visit to the Musée d’art et d’histoire de Neuchâtel where Jaquet Droz CEO Marc Hayek welcomed several hundred attendees from all over the world to the museum which contained an impressive and exquisite selection of examples of Jaquet Droz’s work dating back to the 18th century.

The company’s founders recognised the interest of audiences by creating many custom pieces designed to appeal to individual markets, from ornate decorations... through to chimes and automata
4
Here we learned that an incredible two-thirds of Jaquet Droz’s business came from China during the height of the brand’s success between 1781 and 1810. The company’s founders recognised the interest of audiences by creating many custom pieces designed to appeal to individual markets, from ornate decorations (Jaquet-Droz was known for his incorporation of fine art into pieces) through to chimes and automata that reflected culture and interest. The Jaquet-Droz family is originally from the Neuchâtel Mountains and has made a welcome return to the city with three concurrently running exhibitions at The Musée d’art et d’histoire de Neuchâtel, the Musée international d’horlogerie de La Chaux-de-Fonds and the Musée d’horlogerie du LocleChâteau des Monts.
The three museums have come together to present an exhibition (running until September 30) devoted to Jaquet Droz, celebrating the achievements of the three original founders and demonstrating their most impressive work. All three exhibitions together provide a complete appreciation of the Jaquet Droz story. Pierre Jaquet-Droz’s genius was demonstrated in the introduction of three fascinating automata that had been developed as demonstration pieces to draw attention in major markets. The automata were designed as human figurines with their mechanics built into the back of the figures themselves rather than in separate bases as had been accomplished previously. This was a pioneering achievement for Jaquet Droz that drew international audiences from far and wide wherever the automata were demonstrated.

There are three humanoid automata, known as The Writer, The Musician and The Draughtsman, still preserved at the Musée d’art et d’histoire de Neuchâtel, but temporarily separated for the purposes of the exhibition with one at each museum. The Writer was the first automaton created and is about 70cm tall, taking the form of a little boy sitting on a stool, writing with a goose-quill pen on a mahogany table. This mechanism is the most complex of the three humanoid automata and can write any 40-character text on three lines. The striking realism of the mechanical figures dazzled the royal courts of Europe. The Musician, The Writer and The Draughtsman went on to become legendary – with the draughtsman famously drawing a picture of a horse rather than Louis XVI (due to an operator’s error) when it was demonstrated to Marie Antoinette.

The last stop on our itinerary was a visit to the manufactory in La Chaux-deFonds, which has now presented a new automaton – The Magician – out of deference and respect to the brand’s heritage. The Magician is driven by a mechanism comprising 1,437 parts and components and with a few turns of a key, the figure comes alive. Its head turns from right to left, its arms begin to move and its hands raise one bell-shaped cover after another. Like an illusionist performing, he makes a bird appear, flying from out of the surface of the table. Fully developed and built by hand, The Magician has been designed to inspire the same fascination today as Jaquet Droz automatons did in royal families centuries ago. Automata, chimes and fine art are as much a part of the modern Jaquet Droz as they were in the time of Pierre and Henri-Louis. While at the manufactory we witnessed the development of a new timepiece featuring all three of these elements contained within a single watch case. We were also introduced to the Time Writing Machine, developed over a period of eight years, that can mechanically write the time of day, driven by more than 1,200 components, including 84 ball bearings, 50 cams and nine belts. Clearly, art, together with ingenuity, continue at Jaquet Droz.

Walk this Way Pull on your comfortable shoes and explore some of Dubai’s most pedestrianfriendly neighbourhoods
Q Downtown Dubai While Downtown Dubai is famous for its jaw-dropping architectural wonders, there is more to this area than skyline appeal. As a pedestrian-friendly district, Downtown Dubai is abundant with walkways which surround the entire development making it a fashionable place for visitors to explore on foot. Begin your sojourn at the main entrance of The Dubai Mall where Fernando Botero’s famous Horse 2007 sculpture is located. This statue was commissioned as part of the Art Programme for Downtown Dubai in 2007 and is a well-known sight. From here head along the promenade which encircles Burj Lake and The Dubai Fountain. Synchronised to music, this fountain dances to the likes of Celine Dion and Lionel Richie and is accompanied by light shows every 30 minutes from 6 to 10pm Sunday to Wednesday and 6 to 11pm Thursday to Saturday. Also along this stretch virtually every type of cuisine from sushi to shwarma is on offer, making it the perfect place to stop for a bit of al fresco dining while enjoying the fantastic views of the fountain. Without doubt, the pièce de résistance of this district is the 828-metre-high Burj Khalifa, which is located at the lake side. Like a symbolic compass rising up from the vast landscape, the shimmering silver needle is an iconic landmark and whether you decide to marvel from the outside (the ground-upwards photo composition is an obligatory snap) or take advantage of the turbo-charged elevators that jet to the top, the building is a mesmerising sight. Further round the lake is Burj Park. In addition to picnickers, group fitness classes are held in this area and it’s not unusual to see exercise enthusiasts working out on the green.

if you’re feeling peckish, browse the stores and then stop at one of the city’s most time-honoured eateries, Bait Al Wakeel, which serves traditional Arabic cuisine
Dubai creek Begin your walking tour at Bastakiya next to the British Embassy in Bur Dubai. Charming and beautifully restored to its former glory, Bastakiya is home to many authentic wind towers, the traditional and original air-conditioning solution. Quirky cafés, art galleries, picturesque passageways and some fine examples of Arabian architecture can also be found here along the water’s edge. From the Bastakiya quarter, walk along the bank of the Creek, past the fenced government buildings and look out for a small passage on the left that leads to the Textile Souk. Turn right at the end of the alley and see a wide pedestrian path, lined with stores selling brightly coloured fabrics, pashminas, buttons and sequins. If you’re feeling peckish, browse the stores and then stop at one of the city’s most time-honoured eateries, Bait Al Wakeel, which serves traditional Arabic cuisine. With a pretty wooden terrace
overhanging the Creek, this restaurant offers excellent views across the historic waterway. Appetite sated, head back into the Textile Souk and keep walking until you see the Old Souk abra station on your right. From here there are two options. Either continue along the Bur Dubai bank taking in the restored House of Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum and the Heritage and Diving Village or board an abra (water taxi) and cross Dubai Creek. The abras are small, accommodating approximately 25 passengers and inexpensive with a mere AED1 fare to be paid on board. The journey, which lasts just a few minutes, is fun, but rustic. Ride an abra to Deira Old Souk, take the pedestrian underpass to the opposite side of the road and explore the sights and smells of the Spice Souk. A short walk away is the Gold Souk, which is the perfect place to purchase jewellery.

The Walk – Jumeirah Beach residence As the name suggests, the best way to explore The Walk – Jumeirah Beach Residence, is on foot. While the area is accessible by car, parking is limited and traffic is heavy, so we recommend either arriving by taxi or taking advantage of the Dubai Metro, which stops nearby at Jumeirah Lakes Towers. Aside from being the largest single-phase residential development in the world, this relaxed beachfront neighbourhood is a popular shopping district because of its pedestrian-friendly walkways, beach and marina views and an eclectic selection of trendy bars and restaurants. A 1.7-kilometre beachside shopping promenade with stunning views of the Arabian Gulf, The Walk is peppered with a diverse assortment of luxury boutiques, exclusive jewellery stores and high-street shops, interspersed with chic cafés where diners can take in the smell of sea air while they dine al fresco. On Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 5pm to midnight and Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 9pm, the area is further enhanced by the Covent Garden Market Dubai, where a total of 55 artists, jewellery makers and fashion designers congregate to sell a rich variety of wares. As well as being a great place to snap up unique buys, it’s equally satisfying to take a seat on one of the promenade benches and soak up the atmosphere.

Flying high As the falconry season gets underway, Concierge takes a look at the vital part this beautiful bird has played both historically and in modern times
Q If you’ve been in Dubai for more than a day, the chances are you’ve come across a falcon. Perhaps not the actual living, breathing bird of flight (though that’s not entirely unlikely given the city’s plethora of falcon enthusiasts), but a picture of one will almost certainly have come your way. Whether it’s on a bank note, the leaf of an Emirati passport or emblazoned on the side of an Etihad Airways’ aircraft, the UAE’s national symbol can be found everywhere. Bred by the Bedouins of generations past, the falcon is the national bird of the UAE and its cultural significance stretches back many hundreds of years. “Falcons have greatly contributed to the cultural heritage of the UAE,” explains Dr Margit Muller, Director of the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital. “In times gone by the Bedouins trained falcons to catch prey which helped to feed their families. These magnificent birds helped people survive in an unforgiving climate and tough terrain.” As a result of this relationship, the birds are very well respected. The two major breeds native to the UAE are the saker (al hurr) and the peregrine (al shaheen) and rather than pets, they are seen as companions. So much so that the UAE’s national airline Etihad Airways makes provision for the birds to travel in cabins on its aircraft and they even qualify for passports. This particular practice has additional benefits because it has helped to stamp out an illegal trade in the birds, which for many years blighted falcon breeding. “The CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) falcon passports were introduced in 2002,” says Muller. “As falconers travel outside the country with the

birds, they legally require a passport. This has been very effective in the fight against falcon smuggling and illegal trade.” All in all the process of breeding and registering the birds is taken seriously. Fines and in some cases prison sentences have been served to those who abuse the system.
Historical exercise While the birds were originally bred for hunting prey, the practice has since been restricted in the UAE in order to preserve species such as houbaras (bustards) or karawan (stone curlews) a falcon’s natural prey, which were becoming endangered. Fortunately there is now a successful breeding programme for houbaras, ensuring that this sport doesn’t eliminate the species. Some breeders still travel abroad on hunting holidays to Africa and Asia, but generally, most enthusiasts simply train and fly the birds in the desert for pleasure. In terms of buying the birds, most are purchased in August before the sport season starts in September. This marks the busiest time for breeders. Tall birds are prized, especially the gyrfalcon/peregrine mixed breeds. The gyrfalcon is revered for its good looks, but being an Arctic bird is less adaptive to the heat of the desert. Breeding a gyrfalcon with a peregrine introduces stamina and the ability to cope with the harsh desert climate.
Fa l c o n experiences Many tour operators and hotels offer falconry experiences, where visitors can view impressive demonstrations of the birds’ skills and beauty in flight. Shaheen Xtreme Falconry provides tours for those wanting to learn more about the bird and its role in historic and modern times. Visitors can get up close to the falcons and watch them in full flight. For more information see shaheenxtreme.com
As falconers travel outside the country with the birds, they legally require a passport. This has been very effective in the fight against falcon smuggling and illegal trade
Birds are measured for height, breadth and length from shoulder to tail. They are also analysed for athleticism. According to Muller, falcons think with their eyes. Because their eyesight is so sharp they can be easily upset by large crowds of people or unfamiliar places. This is why you’ll often see birds with a hood over their heads. “When they cannot see, they are immediately calmed.” Training a falcon to return to the owner’s hand is a slow and instinctive
exercise in bonding. The falconer begins slowly, allowing the falcon to roam for short distances. He uses a lure, usually a reward of food, to bring the falcon back. “The process is quite skilled,” explains Muller. “It is performed daily in the mornings and evenings and small pieces of meat are used as a reward on the falcon’s return.” Visitors can actually learn the skill as many conservation reserves offer experiences, such as learning basic training and how to look after birds.

Q W o r d s b y E m i ly m c c a r r i c k
While the long hot summer is drawing to a close, visitors to the emirate may still find daytime temperatures a little overwhelming. Fortunately, while Dubai is a lively city during the day, it is just as fun-filled as the daylight hours draw to a close. The enchanting sound of the sundown call to prayer draws worshippers to the mosques across the emirate and is also a signal that nightfall is near so, come dusk, the city’s roads and pavements are abuzz. From evening visits to Dubai’s top attractions, which include The Dubai Mall and The Dubai Fountain, to trekking through the desert on horseback or taking advantage of the last of the season’s night golf sessions, September is a fantastic month for tourists who wish to enjoy the emirate by twilight. Concierge reveals the best evening activities over the next few pages.

With every type of cuisine you can imagine, from authentic Arabic to French and Italian, diners can book tables on air conditioned terraces and enjoy the shows as they dine. PICK OF THE BRUNCH Elsewhere across the globe brunch is known as a mid-morning meal, but in the UAE it is a culinary indulgence of gastronomic proportions
Q Every Friday, Dubai’s residents and visitors welcome the weekend with brunch, but this is no ordinary daytime snack. Brunch in Dubai is an afternoon commitment of the culinary kind. It typically involves an endless buffet of gourmet dishes and as most seasoned brunch-goers will know, the general rule is that the indulgence starts at around noon and continues as late as 4pm. Unlimited beverages, alcoholic or not, with everything from fresh juices to premium Champagne, are usually on offer and depending on what you opt for you can expect to pay anything from AED100 to AED650 per person. But while the general concept remains the same, Dubai brunches are as different as they are indulgent. Some revolve around a central cuisine, such as French or Japanese, while others are targeted at families and offer everything from bouncy castles to petting zoos. While brunch is usually a group affair, a select few restaurants provide a more exclusive experience, which is perfect for couples. Non-alcoholic options for those who don’t wish to drink are also available and al fresco diners are taken care of as many of Dubai’s brunch spots offer outdoor seating, which is perfect for brunch-goers who wish to enjoy Dubai’s scenic views while they dine. Over the next few pages Concierge has picked the perfect brunches for every type of diner and, for even more options, turn to the Taste listings on page 104.

Best for: variety Every Friday the iconic Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel undergoes a transformation of epic proportions as it reinvents its lobby into Al Bahou – a gigantic banquet hall where the hotel’s five signature restaurants (Sicilia, Shanghai Chic, Mistral, Moroc Bar and Chor Bazaar) unite. While alcoholic options are available, for AED295 guests can enjoy a selection of soft drinks, including fresh juices and mocktails, as they dine on a diverse range of cuisines including Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Japanese and Indian. Carnivores will be in seventh heaven as they venture
inside a room entirely devoted to meat. Foie gras, Parma ham and mortadella are just a few of the delicious delights with which to pile your plate high. An added bonus of this brunch is the petting zoo for children. Little ones can visit the children’s area where bunny rabbits, ducks, puppies and guinea pigs are on display. There’s also a bouncy castle, acrobats, face painting and a PlayStation room complete with a jolly crowd of minders to supervise. While children are busily bouncing their little hearts out, adults have the opportunity to sit back and indulge in the gourmet feast. Spread over three restaurants (Hunters Room & Grill, Blue Orange and Spice Emporium) and including 10 live-cooking

al Qasr
Best for: al fresco dining Now that the barometre-bursting temperatures of summer are finally beginning to subside, al fresco dining is back on the agenda and there is no better place to experience it than at Al Qasr. Spread across three restaurants and home to a vast selection of food, this brunch teams an exquisite culinary journey with stunning outdoor views of the waterways of Madinat Jumeriah. Those with a penchant for Indian food will be pleased to hear that there is a section dedicated to curry creations. Biriyanis, popadoms and sauce-heavy paneers make for mouthwatering choices, while those in the mood for Spanish delights should direct their attentions to the traditionally cured meats. For a Japanese jaunt, which doesn’t involve a hefty air fare, the vast sushi station doesn’t disappoint.
Alternatively, those in the mood for good old-fashioned fish and chips can tuck into the tasty British dish which comes served in mock newspaper. When it’s time for dessert, the phrase ‘spoilt for choice’ hardly covers it. It goes without saying that the obligatory chocolate fountain is present and correct, but this is just the tip of the (sugar-coated) iceberg, with an enormous assortment of appetising treats on offer. The white chocolate cheesecake wins plaudits for being pleasure on a plate, but for the ultimate indulgence try the triple chocolate shooter which is as decadent as it sounds. Diners can take their pick from a selection of brunch packages, including the new Hops and Vines’ option, which offers a selection of red and white wine, martinis and refreshing cocktails. TasTes of The orienT For a true flavour of Asia, indulge at one of Dubai’s fantastic Far Eastern eateries
Q From the tangy zest of Chinese food, to the complex flavours of Korean and the warming aromas of Vietnamese, Asian food is as diverse as it is appetising. Something of a trademark, the world’s largest continent has become synonymous for its fine food. Yet while the feasts of the east are never more appealing than on home soil, you don’t need to trek all the way to the Orient to enjoy homespun classics, because Dubai is abundant with world-class eateries which take inspiration from Asia. In Dubai’s top-end restaurants connoisseurs of Asian food can look forward to fresh and creative dishes, which bring into play an assortment of flavours such as crab, cod, beef, pork and chicken, prepared with aromatic seasonings such as lemongrass, coriander, Thai basil and coconut milk. So whether you’re hankering after wok-fried ostrich lovingly prepared with black bean sauce or have a craving for a Japanese mushroom rice hotpot, Dubai’s upmarket Asian eateries are bound to sate your appetite.

In less than a year since it opened, it has become a popular spot with visitors and residents alike. After indulging in pre-dinner drinks at the bar, take your seat by one of the floor-toceiling windows, were you can enjoy the spectacular views of Burj Khalifa and Downtown Dubai. The menu is even more enticing than the views and we suggest you start with a delicious portion of
sun-dried orange beef. For the main course try the duck-filled pancakes. Adventurous diners should opt for the wok-fried ostrich. The dessert menu is just as alluring and a top choice is the delicious warm chocolate and chestnut cake with vanilla ice cream, a must-try even for the diet-conscious visitor. From the moment you step onto the wooden decks of this scenic waterside Thai restaurant, the colours, smells and sounds transport you to the idyllic eateries of Koh Samui and Phuket Thai Pai Thai You know you’re in for a treat when you have to board an abra (water taxi) in order to reach your destination, so a relaxing cruise down the waterways of Madinat Jumeirah is a sign of things to come when dining at Pai Thai. From the moment you step onto the wooden decks of this scenic waterside Thai restaurant, the colours, smells and sounds transport you to the idyllic eateries of Koh Samui and Phuket. But does the food match up to the lush surroundings? You bet it does. Everything is fresh and full of flavour, but one of the most tantalising is the sate gai or sae nuea – a delicious blend of grilled marinated chicken sate, with coconut milk, lemongrass, tumeric and peanut sauce. For a mouthwatering main course the kung gra tiem prik Thai (deep-fried tiger prawns, garlic and fresh green peppercorn) is a little bite of Bangkok, while dessert lovers will enjoy the traditional taste of ta go bai toey, a coconut pudding. Vietnamese Vôi Located at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray on the edge of Palm Jumeirah, this elegantly decorated restaurant is the gem in Palm Jumeirah’s crown. From the plush mirrored columns to the opulent chandeliers, Vôi exudes 1920s’ glamour and is reminiscent of the French colonial style of Southeast Asia. Begin your meal with a delicious Hanoi mojito. Made with sweet basil and lemongrass, it’s a fresh take on the original cocktail, but one that will undoubtedly be received well, thanks to its refreshing flavour. The dinner menu is equally appealing with a fusion of French and Vietnamese cuisine, which includes classics such as spring rolls expertly prepared with fresh coriander, ginger, lime and a delicious raw mui sauce. While September is a humid time of year, die-hard al fresco diners may choose to book a spot outside on the scenic terrace,
Japanese Zuma Dubai is abundant with über-cool hangouts, where the crème de la crème meet to mingle, but what distinguishes Zuma from other trendy eateries is that despite its status and style, there is not an ounce of pretentiousness about this restaurant. On walking through the doors, the staff exude warmth and welcome and, while the clientele is mainly Dubai’s ‘it’ crowd, visitors need not fear because it’s impossible not to feel at home in this hip haunt. Having recently revamped the menu, Zuma has a selection of new dishes to try
which has charming views of the pool and the beach. Be aware that these tables are awarded on a first-come, first-seated basis, so make sure to arrive early to claim your seat. Where: Jumeirah Zabeel Saray When: Daily 7 to 11.30pm Try: French scallops / Contact: 04 4530000

GO LOCAL Dubai is abundant with Arabic restaurants but for authentic Emirati cuisine we recommend the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. The centre offers a variety of programmes which can be experienced over a spread of traditional Emirati dishes. Local cuisine is uncomplicated and relies on meat, fish and rice, enhanced by the creative use of spices and other aromatic flavourings. Traditional dishes include ouzi, which is a whole roast lamb stuffed with fragrant rice, and balaleet – a fine egg pasta with onion.

SMOKE SIGNALS Smoking shisha (hubbly bubbly) is very popular in Dubai. The Middle Eastern water pipe, which is thought to have originated around 500 years ago, purifies and cools the smoke from flavoured tobacco heated on top of the pipe by coals. The most popular flavours are apple, mint, strawberry, apricot and grape. Although relaxing and sociable, estimates suggest that an hour of shisha smoking equates to inhaling 50 cigarettes. However, if you’re after an authentic experience, smoking shisha is a must. Just remember not to inhale too deeply and to share your shisha among friends. This is a social tradition and to be enjoyed in groups or couples.

my dubai Madiya Mohd S Bin Hadi, operations manager at Arabian Adventures, shares her tips on how to have a fun-filled stay in the city
1
When I have friends visiting I usually take them to Dubai Creek where one of the many highlights is to board an abra (water taxi). The trip only takes a few minutes from one side of the Creek to the other, but it gives visitors the chance to see Bur Dubai and Deira, two of the oldest parts of the city, from the water. Another must-do is the Dubai City Tour, offered by Arabian Adventures. It’s a great way to see the historic side of Dubai as it makes its way through the Bastakiya quarter where the Dubai Museum is located. This is a great tour for first-time visitors to the emirate as it provides interesting facts about the city. If guests are keen to experience some of the modern marvels that Dubai has to offer, I would take them to At the Top, the observation deck located on the 124th floor of Burj Khalifa. Another must-try is the afternoon tea at Burj Al Arab. My favourite time of year in Dubai is winter. The weather cools down and it’s possible to be outside throughout the day. A great pastime is to venture out into the desert. Whether you go in a convoy with

friends or with an organised desert safari you will experience some amazing sights. Dubai is famous for its varied dining scene and there really is something for everyone. For amazing Chinese food, I recommend Summer Place Chinese Restaurant at the Habtoor Grand Beach Resort & Spa. Nobody should leave without trying the delicious shredded beef dish. For authentic local food, head to Local House in the Bastakiya quarter. It’s the only restaurant in the city which serves camel meat and the camel burgers are absolutely delicious. Shu on Jumeirah Beach Road is the best Lebanese restaurant in town and my particular favourites from the menu include the tabouleh and hummous with grilled meat. For something quick and easy you can’t beat Gourmet Burger Kitchen at Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). It serves delicious freshly made burgers and you can choose your own sauces. Shopping is a big part of life in Dubai and, while I’m not a huge fan of shopping malls, I do enjoy going to the souks in Naif, near Al Sabkha Road, which are easily accessible by taxi.
Another must-do is the Dubai City Tour, offered by Arabian Adventures. It’s a great way to see the historic side of Dubai
