At the heart of Dubai’s transformation from desert outcrop to bustling metropolis lies a commitment to retaining a strong sense of the emirate’s culture. As a result, an authentic artistry is apparent in the city’s structures, and in the cosmopolitan communities which thrive around them. Time-honoured skills such as calligraphy, painting and weaving are very much alive today, while Arabesque architectural styles are woven into the city’s very fabric. As Dubai looks to its future, the same creative spirit is felt, whether in quirky new shopping spaces, distinctive buildings or the blossoming art and design spaces across the city. A number of Dubai neighbourhoods are fast becoming havens for the arts and are attracting gifted artisans from near and far to a scene that is eclectic and exciting. Turn to page 44 for this month’s photo essay which explores the city’s artistic side. Culture is also thriving elsewhere in the emirates, and in Sharjah, galleries, exhibition spaces and a museum are at the centre of a vibrant new enclave, turn to page 38 for more. The city is famed the world over for its shopping scene and as Dubai Summer Surprises gets underway this month, Concierge explores some alternative shopping spaces. Turn to page 18 for a selection of quirky boutiques and malls to make the most of the region’s biggest retail festival. Traditional Arabian arts and crafts make a wonderful keepsake of time spent in the emirates. From handmade carpets to beautiful calligraphic scrolls, each intricate piece is made all the more special by the decades of skill and dedication they embody. Find a stunning selection of Arabian treasures on page 30. As one of the few places in the world where it’s possible to discover the desert, dive the ocean depths and explore the city all in one day, Dubai’s extraordinary landscape offers much, no matter the time of year. Turn to page 56 for an actionpacked itinerary. One of the world’s most celebrated cuisines, French fare is known for its sophisticated approach to gastronomy. On Dubai’s decadent dining scene, there is a host of first-class restaurants offering an authentic taste of France right here in the city. Turn to page 64 to start your culinary journey. Try something a little different during a trip to Dubai at Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary. It is an enchanting lagoon inhabited by pink flamingos and is just a short ride from the city. The view is simply breathtaking, surrounded by quiet waters, with Downtown Dubai in the background. Famed the world over for its shopping and of course, if you are going to any mall during a visit here, it should be The Dubai Mall. With its Fashion Avenue and array of luxury brands, it really is a paradise for shoppers looking for world-class designers and boutiques. For the thrill seeker, skydiving is a must while in Dubai and the view offered over Dubai Marina and Palm Jumeirah is spectacular. Desert driving is also quite captivating. There is a host of companies offering the chance to get behind the wheel under the guidance of a professional instructor. It is fun, challenging and thrilling to learn how to drive over the dunes, and dig your wheels out of the sand when they get stuck. Dubai's historical side is also ripe for exploration. Al Fahidi Fort is one of the oldest buildings in the city and home to Dubai Museum. Its exhibits offer a great insight into the emirate's pearling and fishing past. From here, continue on to Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House where you can see old photographs and artfefacts. Its traditional architecture gives visitors a very good idea of how homes were at the time. For photographic opportunities, take a trip on an abra along Dubai Creek to see the dhow merchants at work. If you take the metro from Dubai Marina to the creek, head to the front of the train for a stunning view of the skyline on the way. After a busy day taking it all in, YNot at the InterContinental Dubai Marina is the perfect place to unwind. There are more than 24 wines by the glass and 130 wines by the bottle to accompany the delicious international food served tapas style.

When dusk falls
A bustling metropolis by day, it’s at night that Dubai truly comes into its own. The city’s architectural wonders are impressive, but as the sun sets and darkness falls, an even more spectacular scene is presented. As the light fades, a burnt orange hue casts a soft, warm glow before night comes and a great swathe of colour sweeps the city. Burj Khalifa is of course the jewel in the crown, as its sleek silver lights reach towards the sky. Neighbouring towers in Downtown Dubai add to the impressive scene as skyscrapers stand tall against the night sky and join the façades on Sheikh Zayed Road. All along the coast, shimmering structures line the Arabian Gulf, all the way to Dubai Marina where Cayan Tower twists upwards at a seemingly impossible angle and its lights join the reflections in the habour’s waters. 14

In fashion As Dubai Summer Surprises shines a spotlight on shopping, Concierge takes a look at the city’s alternative retail spaces
It’s little wonder that Dubai, fast developing into a global shopping capital, plays host to two of the biggest events dedicated to all things retail in the region. Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) in January and its sister installment Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) are monthlong celebrations of the amazing shopping offering to be found here. Almost all of the city’s 70-plus malls take part in the events which bring with them exclusive offers, live entertainment and high-end fashion shows. Some of the world’s most famous malls, including The Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates, stage a stellar showcase of the luxury brands and international fashion stars to be found within their gleaming halls. But another side to shopping in the city has recently emerged which celebrates an alternative experience, and during DSS, from July 23 to September 5, there’s no better time to discover the retail scene anew. From the quirky crates of BoxPark to local designer pop-ups and artisanal markets, Concierge explores shopping with a difference this DSS.

Arts and crafts Dubai’s artisanal scene has seen an explosion in recent years with markets, independent outlets and retailers showcasing a fantastic selection of bespoke wares across the city. One of the best ways to gain a flavour for the myriad styles on offer is to attend some of the markets where several vendors are given a platform in one location. One of the most popular is the Ripe Food and Craft Market held in Times Square Centre in summer, and Zabeel Park during the winter months. Shoppers can browse all manner of handmade curios from candles and soaps, to textiles, shoes, jewellery and accessories. There’s also art, photography and locally inspired clothing from Dubai-based designers and artists. For those looking to stock up on fresh produce, the farmers’ market at Ripe boasts a plethora of fresh fruit, vegetables and locally sourced organic ingredients. Elsewhere in the city during winter, Artisans of the Emirates (ARTE) host a twice weekly market at Times Square Centre, and Covent Garden Market on The Walk at JBR features a great selection of one-off finds.

Time to shine Add some sparkle with a glittering jewellery watch from the world’s leading timepiece creators WORDS BY
RACHEL INGRAM
At one time, the term jewellery was reserved exclusively for adornments such as a diamond necklace or extravagant pair of earrings. However, as the craft of creating beautiful timepieces became increasingly more intricate, a change came that saw the finished pieces resemble horological works of art. Mechanical expertise and stunning aesthetics came together as the world’s finest watchmakers refined the concept of the jewellery watch over the decades. Nowadays, sparkling collections rival the most stunning jewellery lines and beautifully designed wristwatches feature clusters of diamonds and precious stones, as well as a host of artistic features. Making the perfect complement to any ensemble, Concierge explores exquisite jewellery watch collections.

Van Cleef & Arpels At Van Cleef & Arpels, a piece of jewellery is often as versatile as it is beautiful, carefully designed with the intention of transforming into a second stunning piece. The brand’s famous Zip necklace is perhaps the best example of a piece which can be worn in several ways. In a similar vein, the High Jewellery collection combines jewellery with

horology, applying the creative signature the Maison is know for. Fans have, for example, collected flower brooches that open to reveal a watch face and cuffs in which a dial is hidden, only to be revealed by its owner. This year, Van Cleef & Arpels announced the release of three new innovative High Jewellery timepieces. Arguably, the most distinctive is the striking Carpe Koï watch. Its sparkling cuff is set with 8,000 coloured gems and is designed in the shape of a Japanese koi fish curling around the wrist. Yellow sapphires and spessartite garnets are set on yellow gold and make up the body of the fish while the mouth opens to unveil a dial which is set with even more precious stones. Another piece in the collection, Abstraction, takes the idea of versatile, jewelled watches to another level. The timepiece can be worn as one large cuff or separated to become three magnetic bracelets. The middle cuff features a beautiful motherof-pearl dial, while the remaining two cuffs display a diamond in place of the dial.

Cartier The Cartier panther is one of the house’s most famous emblems. Throughout its history, the silhouette has adorned necklaces, rings and bracelets, and more recently, incorporated into striking watch dial designs. Rêves de Panthères is the newest timepiece to launch from the Panthère collection and sees, for the first time, three white gold panthers sit side by side on a bed of sparkling brilliant-cut diamonds. The watch is made all the more spectacular with its day to night movement. Driven by the self-winding calibre 9916 MC, the sky on the dial changes from starry night to shining sun. Many of Cartier’s timepieces are transformed into wearable art and the Ronde Louis Cartier XL is no different. The piece features a filigree panther motif in 22-carat yellow gold and platinum, with emeralds for the eyes, set on a backdrop of royal blue. Another new launch, the Large Model Tortue takes a different approach, featuring a panther’s head made of tiny mosaic pieces. Stepping away from the panther theme, the Ballon Bleu de Cartier exhibits a beautiful orchid motif engraved in mother-of-pearl with 18-carat yellow gold flower petals covered in red enamel. Meanwhile the Ballon Bleu de Cartier 42mm Vibrating Setting Watch presents a unique mechanical movement, calibre 430 MC, encased in such a way that every part, bar the hands, is covered in sparkling diamonds.

Founded by Swiss watchmaker Louis-Ulysse Chopard, the distinguished house boasts a long history of crafting precision timepieces. During the Art Deco period in particular, Chopard emerged as masters of diamond setting, producing a range of extraordinarily crafted wristwatches. Bringing decades of gem-setting experience into present collections, The L’Heure Du Diamant is a perfect embodiment of Chopard’s legacy. Created under the tutelage of artistic director Caroline Scheufele, the series includes a number of smaller sub-collections within it that feature oneof-a-kind creations paying tribute to the changing colours of the seasons. The L’Heure du Diamant watch is set with 21 carats of brilliant-cut diamonds to give an intensely shimmered effect. The exquisite piece boasts a silvered guilloche dial while the indices are set with still more glittering gems. The piece is presented in 18-carat white gold and rests on a bracelet of diamonds. At the crown is a briolettecut diamond to set off this show-stopping piece which is a testament to the skill and artistry of the Maison’s artisans.
Since its inception in 1960, Graff has produced some of the world’s most famous jewellery pieces. Just under a decade ago, the company made the bold move to add timepiece design to its long list of credentials. New for this year is the stunning Graff Butterfly. Inspired by ancient Egypt, Graff incorporates the elegant motif in the Classic Butterfly, which comes in two dial versions. One features a ring of diamonds contrasted by a plain black dial with an emerald, ruby or sapphire butterfly at six o’clock. The other dial features the butterfly at both six and 12 o’clock, as well as a pavé of diamonds across the face.

Jaeger-LeCoultre With a history that dates back to the 18th century, Jaeger-LeCoultre boasts a rich heritage of innovation and creativity. Mastering the art of traditional gem setting, the Swiss watchmaker’s craftsmen are artists in their own right, often using the watch dial as their canvas. In 2014 Jaeger-LeCoultre presented the Rendez-Vous Ivy Minute Repeater Watch that shined a light on the Maison’s technical and design savoir faire. Decorated with an elegant ivy motif, the timepiece is crafted in 18-carat white gold and features a total of 548 diamonds, including 255 on the dial alone. This year, all eyes are on the Rendez-Vous Ivy Secret jewellery watch that is inspired by a Jaeger-LeCoultre model from the 1960s. On the cover, three types of diamonds – brilliant, baguette, and marquise cut – outline the shape of a delicate flower that opens to reveal an ivy-decorated watch
dial. Craftsmen meticulously set each of the 304 diamonds on the timepiece in such spectacular fashion that the entire creation sparkles, and ivy leaves on the dial are engraved and painted by hand. Another highlight from the collection is the stunning new Rendez-Vous Ivy Tourbillon that reflects the highest standards in fine watchmaking craftsmanship. The timepiece features an elegant plum coloured dial and intricate lacework, though the main attraction is the rotating tourbillon powered by the calibre Jaeger-LeCoultre 978 movement. The design aesthetics of Rendez-Vous Ivy Tourbillon are truly one of a kind with a range of artistic details. The mesmerising tourbillon is crowned with a tiara of sparking diamonds and the signature ivy motif appears to bloom outward from the tourbillon onto the dial. Then, at the hours of three, six and 12, the ivy branches culminate at the numerals.

A lasting memento Arabian crafts pay tribute to the country’s rich history and are a reminder of time spent in Dubai
As a country steeped in tradition, the UAE boasts a wealth of arts and crafts that are an important part of its story. From beautiful calligraphic scripts, to intricately woven Persian carpets and locally inspired scents, talented artisans keep alive skills that have been passed from generation to generation. Examples of this artistic legacy can be seen all over Dubai, where important buildings and landmarks boast calligraphic etchings, and Arabesque patterns and stunning carpet designs can be seen in a kaleidoscope of colours. It is set against this backdrop that the city’s artists and craftsmen pour their passion into creating wonderful pieces that serve as fitting keepsakes, but also embody great skill and time-honoured traditions.

The written word Among the most ancient of the world’s art forms, Arabic styles of calligraphy date as far back as 2,000BCE. In the Arab world, calligraphy occupies a special space as it developed alongside Islam and was used to document the Qur’an. Arabic Script Calligraphy, more commonly known as Islamic Calligraphy, encompasses all works by Muslim practitioners of the craft, from Morocco to China. Beautiful examples of this special script can be seen throughout the UAE, particularly on mosque ceilings and on important documentation. Each exquisitely written line is painstakingly created by etching ink onto parchment by quill. Traditionally drawn using a carved reed pen, there are several styles within the genre, each with distinct shapes and characteristics. There are around 20 different types of Islamic Calligraphy and mastering each style takes many years. Amir Hussein Golshani is one such master, who has turned his passion and talent for calligraphy into unique pieces of art. From his Golden Pen workshop in Dubai’s Souk Khan Murjan at Wafi mall, Golshani creates works using traditional calligraphy, engraving and carving. Having first come to the craft at just eight years old, he pours a lifetime of dedication into each piece. “Every day I practice. Whenever I see a picture or a graphic design, I wonder how I can use it in calligraphy. I sometimes mix different arts; for example calligraphy with graphics or engraving with calligraphy or carving.

“Whether in Arabic, Persian or English, calligraphy has one root. It is something like painting; when you can paint, for example, a flower, you can paint another flower. For me, this kind of art is a way to show feelings”
“Whether in Arabic, Persian or English, calligraphy has one root. It is something like painting; when you can paint, for example, a flower, you can paint another flower. For me, this kind of art is a way to show feelings and love to people,” says Golshani. A master of the written word, Golshani offers a bespoke service to clients and works on an eclectic variety of materials including paper, leather, metal, eggs and shells. The artist also carves calligraphy into wood, deftly etching a word or phrase in Arabic from a single piece. “Some jobs take one or two days, while others take weeks or even months. In engraving you can’t have mistakes.

“The first mistake is the last mistake. I started to engrave on the needle without a lens or a microscope. I could not see what I was doing, I just imagined a picture in my mind,” says Golshani. His art is held in high regard the world over, with business largely generated through word of mouth from happy visitors to his workshop. He says: “For me there is no impossible. I believe you can do anything if you want to; in art or in your life. I love to show my art to people all over the world. “They are not my customers, they are my friends now. To me, it’s not only business. My customers don’t forget me and in that way, my art is forever.” 3

A stitch in time With centuries of inspiration to draw on, the allure of Persian carpets has transcended the centuries. Historians believe carpet weaving in the Middle East began around 2,500 years ago, and in that time, myriad styles have emerged. Many handmade carpets and rugs use sought-after Kush wool and cotton. Occasionally silk and even camel hair have been incorporated, ensuring they’re made to last. Renowned for vivid colours, honed from age old dyeing processes, artisans use varying knotting techniques such as Sinneh from Persia and Pakistan, or Ghiordes from Azerbaijan and Turkey. These finely knotted carpets can 4
vary in complexity from anywhere between 70 and 340 knots per square inch. An outstanding example of hand-woven technique graces the main prayer hall of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. Believed to be the largest in the world, at 5,700 square metres and containing 2.2 billion knots, the carpet was custom-made from 30 tonnes of wool from Iran and New Zealand. It was then blended with 15 tonnes of pure Iranian cotton. Hand-sown by 1,200 weavers, it took approximately 21 months to complete. Elsewhere in the UAE, authentic Persian carpets and tapestries can be seen adorning the walls and floors of holy sites, historic buildings and museums. In 1979, Emirati brothers Mohamed and Saeed Al Shareif founded Persian Carpet House in the Sharjah Central Souk, where the small shop offered a selection of handmade carpets to visitors. In the 35 years since, the business has grown to become one of the UAE’s largest retailers of handmade carpets. “Persian Carpets are the best in the world. It takes a great deal of time and effort to weave a carpet and every one is unique. The knots per square inch, the material used whether silk or wool, and the design are all important elements which set a carpet apart,” says Abdel Aziz Lim, of Persian Carpet House.

Dubai’s traditional marketplaces are a treasure trove of finds that evoke a special sense of the region. Perhaps maybe one of the more unlikely places to pick up a keepsake is the city’s spice souk. A few minutes’ walk from the banks of Dubai Creek, its winding alleyways are packed with stalls and sacks from which spill out all manner of spices, herbs and scents. The vendors here are absolute experts on their wares and are happy to explain the background to everything on offer. From tantalising cooking ingredients, to scents such as frankincense and eucalyptus with which to fragrance the home, a true flavour of Arabia is felt here. The perfume souk is also closeby and is the perfect place to pick up an authentic oud scent which has been a fragrance mainstay in this part of the world for generations. Elaborately decorated bottles fill the stalls here, where it’s also possible to combine scents thanks to the vendors who can help create a one-of-a-kind perfume as a lasting reminder of the emirate.

Dubai Creek has been at the city’s heart for decades. The historic waterway sustained the emirate’s people long before the discovery of oil. As fishing and pearling thrived, wares were transported along the waters, on to countries far and wide. A stroll along the creek’s banks today reveals something of times past, as traditional boats are loaded with goods bound for foreign lands.

Time seems to have stood still in this old part of town, which stretches from the banks of Sharjah Creek. Here, where the sun casts the distinctive shadows of traditional wind towers, winding walkways are home to museums, galleries and artistic spaces. Far from the lofty glass towers that line the Corniche, Sharjah Art Area, also known as Shuwaiheen, transports visitors back in time, long before the discovery of oil to the bygone days of pearl diving and tales of the sea. A wonderful medley presents itself here, as history and art combine to create a lively cultural scene. Concierge embarks on a journey through the historic streets, unveiling the treasures that lie around each corner.

Cultural quarter Sharjah Art Area is one of the country’s oldest residential neighbourhoods. Its 18th century buildings were once home to wealthy pearl traders who exported the natural gems from Sharjah’s Mina Khalid Port, once the main port on the southern Arabian Gulf. As the discovery of oil further secured Sharjah’s prosperity in the 1970s, HH Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, remained committed to preserving the traditional architecture of the Al Shuwaiheen Area. As a result, a large-scale renovation of the 12,000 square metre neighbourhood was undertaken between 1993 and 1997. Today, visitors flock to the area for the unique charm that lies in its connection to old Sharjah, as well as its cultural collateral. A lively art scene has breathed new life into the neighbourhood, as a fascinating juxtaposition between a cutting-edge cultural community and its historical origins unfolds in this thriving art hub.

“Art has always been an integral part of our society, particularly here in Sharjah where many initiatives were established as early as the late 1970s and the early 1980s,” says Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) director general Manal Ataya. Lauding the neighbourhood’s renovation, Ataya says: “The main idea was to preserve the local heritage and visual aesthetics of the area. Many of the old houses were refurbished. The Sharjah Art Museum was a newly constructed building that was specifically made to be a museum, but it also retained the style and structure of the old houses surrounding it to preserve the identity of the quarter. “Sharjah Art Area has in recent years become a major attraction, offering a unique art experience. You can walk through the museum and have a tour of world class exhibitions, participate in any of the workshops offered, or walk across the street to visit the Artist Studios at Bait Al-Shamsi where you can chat with the artists and watch them work.Visitors can even take art classes at the Sharjah Art Institute.”
Story of a museum Set up in 1997 by the Ruler of Sharjah, Sharjah Art Museum is one of the main landmarks of the Sharjah Art Area and a pioneering venue on the local art scene, run by Sharjah Museums Department. The museum’s traditional architecture offers an interesting contrast with its newly hosted permanent exhibition on contemporary Arab art. Along an arched hallway, over 100 cutting-edge works displayed in 32 galleries offer a glimpse at the rich art scene that has developed in this part of Sharjah over the past three decades. Vibrant watercolours, pastels, acrylics and etchings depict daily scenes inspired by the region’s culture and way of life. One piece of particular note is One Thousand and One Nights, an acrylic painting by Iraqi artist Widad Al-Orfali. Straight out of the pages of the famous Oriental fairy tale, the enchanting blue-hued scene transports viewers to the land of Sheherazade were a mystical river flows around castles, towering minarets and giant palm trees. Elsewhere at the museum, intricate sculptures are showcased including

a masterpiece by Hussein Madi who breathes life into hard metal, turning it into beautiful sculptures such as one in the shape of a bird about to take flight. Drawing inspiration from different international movements from the Beaux-arts, through to cubism, surrealism and expressionism, the newly opened exhibition was the fruit of an extensive documentation effort led by the museum’s curator Alya Al-Mulla. “Initially consisting of 18th century Orientalist paintings from Sheikh Sultan Al-Qassimi’s private collection, the museum’s collection is now becoming more defined both in theme and scope,”she says.

“Over the years, myself and past curators have focused on acquiring artworks from temporary exhibitions hosted by the museum. Thanks to these efforts, our permanent collection now includes artworks by some of the biggest names in Arab art today, such as Emirati painters Abdel Qader Al Rais, Hassan Sharif, Mohammad Kazem and Lebanese sculptor Salwa Rawda Choucair.” Al-Mulla adds: “It is always an emotional moment, when the artists see their early work on display here at this stage of their career. For me, meeting the artists and working with them is an honour. We will continue to focus on contemporary Arab art as we look to the future.” Consolidating this new direction, Sharjah Art Museum has taken the neighbouring Sharjah Contemporary Arab Art Museum under its wing, using both venues as one exhibition space. The museum is also forging ahead to bring a host of exhibitions each year, some organised by the Emirates Fine Arts Society. Others are held in collaboration with prominent international institutions, such as the Tate Gallery in London, and the Museum for African Art in New York. In September the museum is hosting 1,000 Days of Free Art, a travelling exhibition from the Cobra Museum of Modern Art in Amsterdam. The collection of abstract paintings, ceramics, textiles and jazz recordings aims to shed light on European society after the second world war.

A world-class fair Across the street from the Sharjah Art Museum, the façade of a traditional building houses the Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF), a major driving force behind the emergence of Sharjah Art Area as a cultural hub for the region and beyond and the home of Sharjah Art Biennial. “Sharjah has long been a centre for regional and international artists, who came here from the early 1980s onwards. They formed the Emirates Fine Art Society and by the 1990s, the Sharjah Art Biennial was born out of this grass-roots movement,”says SAF’s public and community relations director Sheikha Nawar Al-Qassimi. As it continued to grow, Sharjah Art Biennial required a more consolidated approach and in 2003, Sheikha Hoor Al Qassimi, herself an artist, took over the managment of its programme before becoming SAF founding president in 2009.

“That marked a historical turning point for the biennial,” recalls Al-Qassimi. “It transformed it from something very local and regional to an international event. While previous editions mainly consisted of country representations overseen by local embassies, the new format revolved around a defined theme with a designated curator. From then, the event took on a significantly different feel and became more contemporary and experimental. It is now seen as a very serious platform that attracts hundreds of visitors from the international circuit.” This year marked the 12th edition of the now world-famous event, held from March to June. Curated by Eungie Joo around the theme of The Past, the Present, the Possible, it remained true to its groundbreaking reputation, featuring installations, film projections and mixed media from more than 50 international artists. Participating artists also produced works that truly captured the essence of Sharjah. “The artists were invited to explore different aspects of the emirate, from the desert to the sea. They scrutinised old maps and had insightful exchanges with various local

communities in and around the city. We helped them set up meetings with parties of interest, be it the municipality, environmental protecting agencies or the Poetry Society,” explains Al-Qassimi. Some of the highlights included Mexican artist Damian Ortega’s Talking Wall, which was inspired by the coral walls he saw in an abandoned village at Sharjah suburb Al Khan. South Korean artist HaegueYang’s An Opaque Wind illustrated the historical relationship between South Korea and the Gulf during the 1970s oil boom. One of the stars of the show however, was from Argentinian artist Adrian Villa Rojas. His work, Planetarium was displayed in an abandoned ice factory in Kalba on the emirate’s outskirts, and was formed entirely from local materials found on the ground. The intriguing piece earned him the much-coveted Sharjah Biennial Prize. While some new venues were selected for the edition, the main focus remained the Sharjah Art Area and its 150-year-old houses, such as Beit Al Shamsi and Beit Al Serkal. “The combination of the old buildings and the contemporary art makes for a very interesting mix. It creates a much more interesting dialogue between the artworks and the venues,” says Al-Qassimi.

This September, visitors will discover a fantastic world of kaleidoscopic spaces and psychedelic effects at the The Light Show, a travelling exhibition of sculptures and installations exploring aspects of light, in collaboration with the Hayward Gallery in London. The residency programme also offers visitors the chance to meet artists at work in SAF’s studios. “The response to our residency program has been very positive,” says Al-Qassimi. “It is a great platform of exchange between the artists and the local communities. We welcome them here in our studios where they are surrounded by the Sharjah Art Institute, Sharjah Art Museum, the Poetry Society and the Emirates Fine Arts Society. They also visit local universities where they give lectures and hold workshops, giving students feedback on their work. Here, they discover the real side of Sharjah, where it all began.”

As one of the region's most important business hubs, Dubai International Financial Centre is perhaps an unlikely venue for culture. Yet over the years, a thriving art scene has blossomed amidst the skyscrapers. Internationally renowned galleries and art businesses to have opened their doors include renowned auction house Christie's while prestigious exhibition spaces like Opera Gallery draw scores of visitors. The gallery's Black Room boasts a selection of modern masterpieces from greats such as Auguste Renoir and Salvador Dali

A wonderful blend of the old and new can be found in the artistic spaces of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. As the city's oldest quarter, the traditional wind tower architecture which lines the winding pathways is in itself a work of art. The historic setting provides the perfect backdrop to the contemporary pieces on display at a host of galleries peppered throughout the district. One of the city's oldest, Majlis Gallery presents art and sculpture from around the region and beyond in a leafy al fresco setting, while XVA Gallery Dubai is an important platform for contemporary Middle Eastern art

The result of a lifetime's passion for culture and the arts, Alserkal Avenue is a unique space. Established in 2007 by local arts patron Abdelmonem Bin Eisa Alserkal, the thriving creative community which now exists stems from a vision to foster a cultural scene akin to those found in the industrial areas of New York, Tokyo and London. Located at the heart of Al Quoz, at first glance the district is little more than factories and warehouses, but a closer look reveals countless galleries, cafĂŠs and art spaces. Alserkal Avenue is at the very centre of all the activity and, fresh from a major extension programme, is home to more than 20 international and local galleries. Contemporary art is the main focus of its muchlauded exhibition spaces such as the homegrown Green Art Gallery. A brilliant roster of events also takes place throughout the year at the Avenue which sees the neighbourhhood come alive as galleries throw open their doors to showcase the wealth of talent within

A fresh new creative space in the city's Business Bay, Dubai Design District (d3) provides a home for the region's emerging fashion, art and design stars. The first phase was launched earlier this year and since then, the initiative has fast become an important vehicle for artisans in the emirate. Local and international fashion, art and design houses can be found at d3, which has become a place where the cultural community can come together to learn, exchange ideas and be inspired

With a rich history to draw on, the region's artistic offering is particularly vibrant. One defining characteristic of the local arts scene is a wonderful synergy between contemporary and traditional influences. Masters of the craft, such as Dubai artist Hazem Mahdy, deftly combine the time-honoured craft of calligraphy with modern graphic design touches to dazzling effect. Iconic mosques The UAE’s places of worship add an enchanting element to the skyline
CAPITAL ATTRACTION Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is the most famous house of worship in the UAE. Situated just over an hour’s drive from Dubai, the impressive religious structure is made from marble and boasts 82 domes, over 1,000 columns and the world’s largest knotted carpet. The mosque is the eighth largest in the world, with space for 41,000 worshippers, and is open for visitor tours outside of prayer time. When: Sun to Thu 10am, 11am and 5pm; Fri 5pm and 7pm; Sat 10am, 11am, 2pm, 5pm, 7pm. Contact: 02 4191919. Visit: szgmc.ae
Mosques are an important part of life in the UAE and more than 1,400 of the ornate buildings are peppered across the country. The serene structures provide places of worship for followers of the Islamic faith, and are also exquisite examples of traditional architecture. Jumeirah Mosque in Dubai is one of the city’s most striking sights. The mosque features interior and exterior domes, a style that was prevalent during the Fatimid era when Egypt led the Islamic empire. It was built between 1977 and 1979, making it one of Dubai’s older functioning mosques. The mosque is one of a few in the city which allows non-Muslims to enter, thanks to an ‘Open Doors, Open Minds’ policy. Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) offers informative tours inside the impressive building where visitors can admire the intricate patterns on walls and ceilings, and some stunning examples of Islamic calligraphy. In the Al Safa area of Dubai, Al Farooq Omar Ibn Al Khattab Mosque is reminiscent of Istanbul’s famed Blue Mosque and features sapphire-hued highlights on a starched white marble exterior. With beautiful handcrafted decorations both inside and out, a tour is recommended in order to fully appreciate its splendour. At Dubai Creek, the Diwan Mosque in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood is an eye-catching structure that features an unusually flat dome and a slender white minaret that towers above the surrounding buildings. It stands out against a backdrop of low-rise souks and wind-tower architecture. The mosque is visible from the creek, and is best viewed during an abra cruise on its gentle waters.

Discovering Dubai
DUBAI CREEK
With its varied landscape, pristine coastline and clear blue skies, Dubai is ripe for exploration all-year round
56
AC TI V I T I E S / e xp e r ie nce
There are few places in the world where you can drive across majestic desert dunes, marvel at a futuristic cityscape and dive into crystal clear waters - all in one day. Yet here in the UAE, a rich landscape that is defined by incredible variety makes it all possible. There is a host of ways to take it all in, whether on an amazing aerial adventure, exploring the ocean depths in a once-in-a-lifetime scuba dive or looking out over the city from the top of the world’s tallest tower. No matter the time of year, there is ample opportunity to make the most of all that Dubai has to offer, whether on land, from the air or out at sea.

An aerial tour
1
There is so much to see and do during a visit to Dubai that one of the best ways to take it all in is from the air. Not only does an aerial trip provide the opportunity to see all of the attractions, but it also offers an entirely new view of some of the emirate’s most famous sights. Board a luxurious helicopter on a Helidubai tour and soar high above the city’s skyscrapers or fly over the sweeping desert dunes. From the air, Dubai is nothing short of an architectural marvel and the contrast between old and new comes into focus. Whether it’s the world’s tallest building Burj Khalifa or the historic Dubai Creek and manmade marvel Palm Jumeirah, the sights are outstanding. Helidubai’s fleet of Italian-built Agusta 109e helicopters can seat up to six guests. During the journey, the pilot delivers an on-board narrative to accompany the unforgettable vistas. When: Contact Helidubai for timings Where: Pick-ups available from Dubai Creek Dubai Marina and the Burj Al Arab helipad Price: From AED595 per person Contact: 800 FLY or 04 2081455

Creek cruise Dubai Creek’s charm lies in its connection to the past. The atmospheric waterway was once the city’s trading hub where traditional dhow boats were loaded with wares bound for distant shores. The creek’s banks still buzz with activity as dhows ferry goods and passengers across its waters. One of the best ways to soak up the atmosphere is on an evening creek cruise. Climb aboard a large dhow, operated by Tour Dubai, and sail along the waterway taking in the sights by night. Traditional buildings line the banks with some stunning examples of the windtower architecture native to the region. In the distance, the modern skyline shines bright in a wonderful contrast between old and new. A dinner buffet is available onboard and the trip can be enjoyed from the cool of the air-conditioned lounge. To reach its observation deck At the Top, board a super-fast elevator to level 124 where you can experience awe-inspiring views that stretch for miles. Look down on the attractions of Downtown Dubai, including The Dubai Fountain and The Dubai Mall, as the city stretches out to meet great swathes of desert. The attraction has recently reached even greater heights with the addition of two viewing areas. Burj

EXPERIENCE
A place to...
Soak up the sunshine Relax on the beach, take to the waves or enjoy dinner with a view at Zero Gravity
ON THE MENU When it comes to dining, guests are spoilt for choice. Each night the kitchen offers a menu of grilled dishes, including Scottish salmon, king fish steak, Cajun chicken breast, lamb rack and steaks. Signature dishes from the main menu include pan-fried seabass, grilled jumbo prawns, butter chicken, slow braised beef short rib and Arabic mixed grill. There’s also an array of pastas, salads, appetisers, pizzas and seafood dishes, and highlights include freshly shucked oysters on ice and yellow fin tuna carpaccio.
One of the city’s coolest beachside hangouts, Zero Gravity buzzes with activity no matter the time of day. The beach club, restaurant and bar is one of Dubai’s trendiest venues, in part, due to its unique location close to the Skydive Dubai drop zone. Spend the day and lounge on the pristine private beach as you watch the skydivers land nearby. For those looking to join in a more active experience, Zero Gravity this month launches a brand new selection of watersports from its beach. From boat cruises and kayaking, to parasailing and flyboarding, the venue makes the most of the Arabian Gulf on its doorstep. At night, as the temperature cools, Zero Gravity comes into its own. Outside, the garden is peppered with comfortable sofas where guests can enjoy snacks and more than 14 flavours of shisha. Inside, the venue is equally as impressive. Décor is chic and modern, while chill-out music adds to the ambience. On the upper floor more seating overlooks the bar from balconies that open up to an al fresco terrace the length of the building. Visitors can enjoy dinner or light bites in the cool of the air-conditioning, or outside on the upper-level terrace, which boasts a particularly beautiful view as the sun sets over the Gulf. The popular Zero Gravity Friday brunch features special events and guest performers.
Beach passes: During August, a one-day pass for the Zero Gravity beach costs AED150 per person, and includes a voucher for AED150 worth of food and drinks. The Onshore Social Friday brunch: 3 to 6pm, from AED395 per person Contact: 04 3990009 Visit: 0-gravity.ae

French flair Concierge discovers French flavours in the heart of Dubai
In 1765, on a quiet Paris street, a littleknown bouillon seller named Boulanger embarked on a enterprise selling broth to passersby. The tasty clear soups were considered to have restorative properties and so the term ‘restaurant’ was coined to describe the business, which for the first time, took the dining experience beyond the tavern and inn. A few decades later, the Grande Taverne de Londres in Paris introduced the idea of presenting dishes on a menu for guests served at small, individual tables. The notion of restaurant dining was born and from these humble beginnings, grew a worldclass gourmet tradition. French cooking draws on a rich natural larder of ingredients from the country’s fertile soils and abundant coastline. It’s essentially all about the produce –staples of fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, herbs and grains are complemented by star attractions such as truffles, cheese, wine and Champagne. In Modern French cuisine, a focus on first-class ingredients combines with technical flair and a genuine passion for the art of cooking. On Dubai’s dining scene, some of the city’s very best restaurants are French. The first-class venues are not only exciting choices for an evening meal, but offer wonderful examples of the cuisine. From rustic French farmhouse-style cooking to chic Parisian bites, Concierge takes a look at French fine-dining in Dubai.

Plantation Allow yourself to be transported to a traditional French kitchen at this authentic restaurant where the focus is on a cassolette dining concept. Healthy and nourishing dishes are prepared in cast iron cassolette pots where slow-cooking teases out a world of flavours. There’s vegetarian options as well as seafood, meat and cheese variations of the dish to try on the varied menu. Choose from delicious starters that include French oysters, panseared scallops and pumpkin soup, then it’s on to the cassolettes for mains. The jardinière de légumes is a tasty pot of slowcooked baby carrots, new potatoes, snow beans and green beans, while the daube is a melt-in-the-mouth Wagyu beef stew served with steamed baby potatoes and mushrooms. For those keen to try a seafood option, the
guazzetto cassolette combines oven-baked sea bass with kalamata olives, potatoes and capers in a tangy tomato basil broth. After a hearty meal, one of the tempting desserts makes a perfect treat. The sublime tarte fine aux pommes is a traditional cinammon apple tart, served with vanilla ice cream for a taste of home cooking French style. Cave Add a touch of Parisian chic to a dining experience with a trip to this trendy wine bar at Conrad Dubai. A modern stone cave setting leads guests on a winding path past cosy nooks and intimate spaces to relax and enjoy the fine French wine and cuisine. There’s a tasting room, day beds or fireside lounge to choose from, as you settle down to a menu of light bites and tasty dishes which has been specially created with Cave’s extensive wine cellar in mind. A Parisian soul food concept is reflected in flavoursome dishes such as the fig and Roquefort salad with a hazelnut vinaigrette or the terrine de foie gras with apricot chutney. Aside from
delicious staples such as moules marinière and steak frites, there’s a fantastic choice of dishes to share. The fondue savoyarde is heaven for cheese fans and combines melted beaufort, comté and emmental – perfect for dipping chunks of delicious bread as you sip on one of the restaurant’s fine wines. Dishes like the planche de fromages and planche de charcuterie offer platters of gourmet cheeses and meats to feast on as you unwind in the sophisticated surroundings. Traiteur There is a sophisticated approach to gastronomy at Traiteur, where the menu offers dishes that are well thought out and created with real expertise. The cutting-edge influence of its bistronomic cuisine concept never strays from the most important consideration when it comes to French cooking, the quality of ingredients. The menu of course offers nods to the country’s classics such as baked French snails with garlic and parsley butter, or duck breast with sauce a l’orange, but there is also a host of contemporary options to add a fresh feel. Bold pairings such as foie gras terrine with Granny Smith apples work beautifully, while the mouthwatering Gillardeau oysters and selection of premium cuts of beef mean the stage is set for an unforgettable meal. The dining room itself is an impressive space with an elevated show kitchen and walnut finishings to lend an inviting feel. During the cooler months, there’s also outdoor seating with Dubai Creek views. Traiteur is a great place to come for a special meal with an atmosphere that gives a sense of occasion, yet the restaurant manages to retain a welcoming, relaxed feel which encourages diners to linger over the sensational food.
Reflets par Pierre Gagnaire This first-class restaurant at InterContinental Dubai Festival City quite literally has French cuisine down to a fine art. Under the tutelage of three-time Michelin-starred chef Pierre Gagnaire, expect adventurous dishes that are presented with flair and boast delicious combinations of flavours. Highlights include the terrine of duck liver, which is paired with spring chutney and a sublime Earl Grey tea crumble, while the semi-salted cod is poached in olive oil and aromatic herbs for a tasty take on a fish dish. The Irish beef ribeye is a stand-out, and comes smothered in a creamy black pepper Béarnaise sauce.
Dessert is also a major event at Reflets and the Tanariva chocolate soufflé, stuffed with fresh raspberries and served with a crispy blackcurrant soft chocolate biscuit and raspberry sorbet meringue, is a sweet treat like no other. The décor is as extravagant as the food. Pink plush damask chairs are complemented by the sparkling Murano glass chandeliers that light the mother-of-pearl adorned walls in this plush venue.

Amongst Dubai’s many world-famous attractions lies a largely unexplored artistic quarter where understated industrial units belie a vibrant cultural scene waiting to be discovered. Al Quoz is brimming with art galleries, museums and studios as the creative space has grown in recent years to become Dubai’s main cultural hub. Artists gather here to present work and exchange ideas at around 20 galleries, which represent an eclectic mix of international styles and genres. A focal point of the artistic activity here is Alserkal Avenue, which occupies a one-block radius and is made up of myriad interconnected streets. Renowned exhibition spaces such as Carbon 12 Dubai, Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde and Green Art Gallery call Alserkal Avenue home while the area also boasts the first private museum in the area, Salsali Private Museum. Elsewhere, The Courtyard is an eclectic space where visitors can expect film screenings, art workshops and a weekly farmers’ and crafts market alongside regular exhibitions.

Dubai is awash with water sports to cool down Kite surfing This sport is so popular in the UAE that the government has allocated a number of special kite-surfing beaches that cater to enthusiasts including Jumeirah's Kite Beach and Jebel Ali Beach. When the wind picks up, kite surfers head to these popular spots to harness the power of the wind and reach speeds of up to 50 knots while performing jaw-dropping tricks. Paddle boarding When Gulf conditions are calm, paddle boarders take to the water. A number of areas prove particularly popular for the sport, such as around the world-famous Burj Al Arab and off the coast of Palm Jumeirah. Scuba Diving The UAE is a haven for underwater explorers and the coastal waters offer a variety of diving opportunities. Divers can uncover deep sea wrecks off the coast of Palm Jumeirah or explore coral reefs inhabited by hundreds of species of sea life in neighbouring emirate Fujairah.

THE WORLD (UNDER CONSTRUCTION)
DUBAI CREEK, SOUKS AND DUBAI MUSEUM The heart of the city, the Creek is a stunning spot to catch a glimpse of authentic Dubai. See dhows (traditional boats) ply their trade along the waters while early morning visitors will see fishermen at work on the river banks. Also in this part of the city is Dubai Museum, which makes for a fascinating day out with interactive displays and exhibits charting the emirate’s history from its pearl diving days. Stop by the gold, spice and perfume souks for some traditional treasures before leaving this vibrant area.

My Dubai Entrepreneur Omar Bin Khediya shares his city highlights
1 Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood 2 National Day celebrations, Dubai
1
I’ve lived in Dubai all of my life and for me, the lifestyle here is unmatched. In the past, people here would travel to go shopping, dine at nice restaurants or for entertainment, but now Dubai offers it all, and we do it better than many other places. If I want to immerse in culture, I love to go to Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. As the oldest quarter in the city, it’s one of Dubai’s heritage hubs where the wind-tower architecture is particularly inspiring. I also like checking out the small cafés, galleries and quirky shops that are found peppered throughout the streets here. The restaurant scene in Dubai is excellent. I love dining in Teatro at Towers Rotana on Sheikh Zayed Road. The seabass there is delicious. Elsewhere, new seafood restaurant Catch at Fairmont Dubai is great. There is a dish there called wagyu on the rocks which I’ve become a huge fan of. At weekends, I enjoy spending time at the beach with my friends. My mother hosts a lot of family gatherings which I love going to. If I can, I also like taking long weekend breaks and going on holiday – it’s the perfect way to relax and unwind.
}
When I want to go shopping, of course I visit my fashion, furnishings and lifestyle store, O Concept where there are so many interesting finds under one roof. Ramadan has to be my favourite time of the year in the UAE. My family and friends gather daily, so it’s an amazing way to connect with loved ones. Our whole lifestyle changes during the holy month and it’s great for us all to come together and reflect on our blessings. Family is everything and when I look back on Ramadan, it is filled with the happiest of memories. When I have friends or family visiting, one of my favourite places to take them is Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi – it’s so impressive. In Dubai, Burj Al Arab and Burj Khalifa are obvious winners. The historic area around Dubai Creek is a place I would recommend. People are always surprised when they go there, as it’s such a contrast to the skyscrapers and bright lights of the rest of the city. I have so many wonderful memories of Dubai. I look forward to National Day. The fireworks are always breathtaking and it’s a fantastic time of year.
