PRESIDENT'S NOTE

HAPPY CONCIERGE DAY, CHICAGO! By official proclamation from Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the team here at Concierge Preferred is proud to announce that the City of Chicago celebrated its seventh annual Concierge Day in Chicago on January 26, 2017. Concierge Preferred reached out to the Mayor’s Office in 2011, requesting that the city create a day dedicated to all concierges—from residential and corporate to hotel and other types—as a way to formally pay tribute for all they do to make Chicago the world-class destination it is. Since then, we have been active in working directly with the Mayor’s Office to successfully designate the last Thursday of every January as Concierge Day in Chicago. To date, Chicago is the only city that has such a designation. It’s a well-deserved honor. Chicagoland’s concierges are the individuals who are working behind the scenes, answering questions, and coordinating important functions that truly enable tourism to thrive. It’s because of that hard work, research, and insider's knowledge that we polled over 600 concierges to compile a list of their favorite places around town. Let’s face it; it’s all but a proven scientific fact that concierges know more about Chicago than everyone else. And that’s everyone else combined. So what do they say the city’s top places are? Well, read on to find out. No matter if you’re looking to shop in one of our neighborhood boutiques (p.8), dine at one of the city’s best restaurants (p.14), or to spend an afternoon at a museum (p.46) it’s all here, and sourced from those who know Chicago best: her concierge. Sincerely,

Tim O'Malley President & CEO

Amber Holst Vice President & Editorial Director

QUINTESSENTIAL CHICAGO

SIX WINTER TO SPRING EVENTS ì By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago

With these six events you’ll realize Chicago doesn’t have an offseason. WARM UP WITH THE SPOTLIGHTS

The concierge love the theater and for good reason, so it is kismet that Chicago Theatre Week (p.54) is taking place. Catch countless of Chicago’s award-winning companies put on gripping productions for $15, $30, or sometimes less. You can experience “Mr. and Mrs. Pennyworth” at the Lookingglass Theatre Company (p.55), the always entertaining Blue Man Group (p.54), “Men Are From Mars – Women Are From Venus LIVE!” from Broadway in Chicago (p.54), “Straight White Men” from the Steppenwolf Theatre Company (p.55), and so much more.

BURN SOME RUBBER

If you need a break between plays then don’t miss out on the 2017 Chicago Auto Show (p.54). With one million square feet of vehicles on display this is the largest auto show in the country, and since 1901 it has been held more times than any other auto show in North America. The size of it comes with the perks of having some great debuts and otherworldly concept vehicles along with keynote presentations from the auto industry leaders. If seeing the vehicles aren’t enough for you then make sure to check out the countless interactive exhibits that highlight some of the technology living in many of the automobiles. cago. The party always starts at the St. Patrick’s Day River Dyeing (p.54) where the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers pour orange dye into the Chicago River giving it the emerald green color that last about five hours. The best places to catch the dyeing is on the west side of the Columbus Drive, east side of Michigan Avenue, or anywhere on Upper or Lower Wacker Drive. After, head to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade (p.54), and then finish off at the countless Irish pubs in the city for a memorable and blurry time. BLOOM INTO SPRING

It’s always hard to know when the temperatures will let up, but in Chicago we introduce spring no matter the weather with these two events. Visitors can experience over 10,000 orchids at the Chicago Botanic Garden’s Orchid Show (p.54). Learn from experts, buy some orchids for your home, and even spend an evening with the orchids at this anticipated show. Closer to the city, don’t miss the Chicago Flower and Garden Show (p.54) where you can explore over two-dozen stunning featured gardens, a shopper’s paradise marketplace, nationally recognized experts presenting informationpacked seminars, and even cooking demonstrations featuring top chefs.

If you are looking to warm up this winter, then look no further than Boleo (p.17). A hidden gem in the Loop, Boleo is the perfect spot for a date night or dinner before going to see "Hamilton." Chef Alexis Hernandez’s inspired menu boasts the best of Peruvian and Argentinian cuisine. Make sure to try one of their signature fernet-and-cola drinks. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

DD The Duck Inn (p.36) DD Pleasant House Bakery (p.18) DD Revival Food Hall (p.18)

Kayleigh Dudevoir, Concierge, The Palmolive Building

Cantina Laredo (p.19) boasts an inviting, energized atmosphere and is committed to giving their guests the taste of authentic Mexican cooking. They use only the best, freshest ingredients and prepare everything by hand—you’ll be sure to taste the difference. Stop by during happy hour to sample one of their delicious signature cocktails. 3 OTHERS TO TRY: DD Cafe Iberico (p.19) DD Nacional 27 (p.42) DD Frontera Grill (p.19)

Brittiney Jenkins, Concierge, Conrad Chicago

Cindy’s (p.41) rooftop lounge overlooks Millennium Park and is a great choice if you want to go to a good bar with a phenomenal view. I am all about taking in the views of this beautiful city and it is something that our guests enjoy so much. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

DD Skydeck Chicago (p.53) DD 360 Chicago (p.52) DD Ice Skating Ribbon at Maggie Daley Park (p.53)

DINING

FEAST AT THESE FOUR FAVORITES By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago

Dusek's Board & Beer ìî

Did you know that Chicago’s concierge make over 1.35 million dining referrals each year? From neighborhood favorites to Loop newcomers, here’s a look at four, conciergeapproved restaurants offering up a unique taste of Chicago. BREAK UP THE MORNING ROUTINE

Knowing the best spots for breakfast is crucial whether you are in your hometown or on the road. Definitely stop by one of Yolk’s (p.17) locations, says Dianna Kwan, an independent concierge. Breakfast, after all, is their specialty. Of course there’s eggs-a-plenty on the expansive menu—as the name would imply— but they also offer everything from burgers and salads to the French toast and Benedict's one may desire. Sit at the counter if you’re alone, or choose a booth or table. The options are as varied as the fare as there’s plenty of nooks and crannies to cozy up in these bright and welcoming restaurants. A SWEET AND SAVORY TREAT

JLL (AMA Plaza) concierge Akilah Perry has three words for you: French toast flight. If that’s music to your ears, then head up to Lincoln Park (M7;M3) and experience Batter & Berries Batter and Berries î

(p.17), a cheery neighborhood breakfast cafe. Here, chef Derek Rylon whips up everything from buckwheat pancakes and deconstructed broccoli and cheese omelets to his stylized take on chicken and waffles and the signature flight of French toast—including strawberry, blueberry, lemon, and caramel—that Perry can’t get enough of. Dusek's Board & Beer î

The Dearborn. Photo by Gilbane Building Company. ì OLD WORLD CUISINE REIMAGINED

Celebrate the enduring link between beer, food, and hospitality at Dusek’s Board & Beer (p.18), a favorite of corporate concierge Kimmy Collins. Serving up a continental European approach to small plates, Dusek’s boasts a convivial neighborhood setting where one can enjoy an honest meal and drinks a plenty. Housed in the old-world style Thalia Hall, Dusek’s imaginatively separates the menu by grains and greens, by sea, and by land and air. Stand-outs include the braised beef cheek, sweetbreads, choucroute, and the wonderfully delicious woodroasted panzanella salad. After dinner, make sure to venture down to Punch House, the supremely cool cocktail bar in the basement. DELIGHTFUL DISHES DOWNTOWN

Located on the booming corner of Dearborn and Randolph Streets, you’ll find The Dearborn (p.17). Dubbed a “much-needed pre- and post-theater dining option in the Loop and welcome addition to the neighborhood” by Radisson Blu Aqua’s concierge Rebecca Starodub, this urban American tavern joins several other high profile projects at the rapidly emerging shopping and dining destination, Block 37 (p.12).

The Dearborn. î

The Dearborn’s menu marries a playful blend of high-brow cuisine shoulder-to-shoulder with elevated, low-brow tavern-style fare offering patrons a wide range of fine dining dishes and creative iterations of familiar favorites.

NIGHTLIFE

LIBATIONS & LIVE MUSIC By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago

The Bassment ìî

Here’s a look at three of concierges’ local favorites offering a unique taste of Chicago’s eclectic nightlife scene. ON POINT

Part restaurant and part music venue, The Promontory (p.42) in Hyde Park (M5;D4) is one of Langham Chicago concierge Philippe Gills’ favorite nightlife spots in town. After all, he says, where else can you see jazz legends, salsa bands, classical recitals, and poetry slams in the same month at the same venue? This neighborhood destination’s restaurant and bar, located downstairs, is designed around a brick hearth that reflects simple traditions in a modern setting. Drawing inspiration from the open hearth blazing away in the kitchen you’ll find a “hearth to table”focused menu, a cocktail program focused on modern twists on classic cocktails, and a wine program that highlights historically significant wine regions with an emphasis on lesser-known varietals. The upstairs music venue honors Hyde Park’s musical legacy. With its modern design, stellar acoustics, and exciting music programming, The Promontory seemingly celebrates the eras when

spacious ballrooms and jumpin’ jazz clubs made Chicago’s South Side the capital of American music. PAST AND PRESENT

Located in Chicago’s vibrant Pilsen (M5;C3-4) neighborhood, you’ll find Thalia Hall (p.45). Originally built as a performance hall in 1892—and modeled after Prague’s Opera House—this stunner sat vacant since the 1960s, but has recently The Promontory ï

39

The Promontory ì

been restored to its original glory. Today, the reimagined Thalia Hall includes a restored performance space, a beer-centric restaurant with a Michelin-starred chef, and an underground bar that specializes in punch. So if you’re a foodie and libation-loving concert-goer, this hot spot is one you won’t want to miss out on. Needless to say, Thalia Hall takes the idea of dinner and a show to a new level. Whether you’re looking to catch a performance by an artist like Andrew W.K. or Joshua Radin, the live music lineups here are as delightfully eclectic as the space. ON THE DL

Tucked away beneath Hampton Social is The Bassment (p.45), a live music subterranean cocktail lounge in River North (M6;C1-4). Guests venture a few steps down the alleyway and enter a secret entrance marked “The Tobacconist," then head through a narrow hallway, down a short flight of steps, and into a simple yet welcoming greeting room with a single aluminum aircraft-style desk and bookcase. It’s when the black

curtain is pulled back that a large and cozy modern speakeasy bar and lounge awaits. With the 1960s British Invasion movement in mind, The Bassment’s design includes gold accents throughout, brick walls covered in street art, a long bar, a mixture of uniquely designed velvet and leather couches and a full stage. The music program features live bands performing R&B, pop, blues, New Orleans funk, soul, jazz, and nu-disco covers. The bar offers a creative cocktail menu in addition to wine, spirits, Champagne, and a light bite menu to choose from as well.

TOP SIX CULTURE AND ATTRACTIONS FAVORITES

ì Hélio Oiticica. Filter Project—

For Vergara at Galerie Lelong, New York, 2012. Courtesy of César and Claudio Oiticica, Rio de Janeiro, and Galerie Lelong, New York.

By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago

Chicago’s concierge community voted in 40 culture and attractions favorites, but these six received the most votes. Make sure to add these iconic museums, tour companies, and landmarks to your itineraries. MUSEUM MOMENTS

For first-time visitors Chicago’s museums tend to serve the purpose of being able to do something to avoid the cold weather. Once they step inside our world-class institutions they realize they could spend days in each one. Takara Bard-Edwards, concierge/lifestyle director at Gold Coast City Apartments, enjoys “each one of these places because of the history, and it creates memories that you can hold forever.” You can recreate some memories from “Ferris Bueller's Day Off” by visiting The Art Institute of Chicago (p.49) and checking out the captivating “A Sunday on La Grande Jatte,” “America’s Windows,” and “Nighthawks.” In addition to these classics, don’t miss their new exhibit “Hélio Oiticica: To Organize Delirium,“ the Brazilian artist’s first U.S. retrospective featuring his large-scale installations. The exhibit runs from Feb. 18 through May 7. Don’t make any other plans when you visit the Museum of Science and Industry (p.49) as it’s the largest

í Chicago History Museum science museum in the Western Hemisphere. If you have time after visiting the German World War II submarine, the Boeing 727, the 40foot water vapor tornado, and the adorable chick hatchery, then don’t miss the opportunity to explore the mind of famed writer and illustrator Maurice Sendak in “Where the Wild Things Are: The Works of Maurice Sendak,” which closes Feb. 20. For an in-depth view of the city make sure to visit the Chicago History Museum (p.49). The museum provides a great overview with artifacts from

í Chicago Line Cruises the World’s Fair, the first passenger car that rode on the L tracks in 1893, a look at the Great Fire of 1871, and more, but it gives you great glimpses into lesser known history like with their exhibit “Making Mainbocher: The First American Couturier.” Marvel at the 30 dresses, the photographs, and the illustrations highlighting the impressive career of Chicago-born Mainbocher from working at the complaint department of Sears, Roebuck and Company to becoming a haute couturier.

CHICAGO CRUISING

Chicago’s concierge know that it’s important to have options and that’s why they voted for two great boat tour companies in their top six favorites. Chicago Line Cruises’ (p.56) 90-minute architecture cruise takes off starting March 25. If you want a more personal cruise of Chicago make sure to inquire about their luxurious charters. The Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise Aboard Chicago’s First Lady Cruises (p.56) doesn’t take off until April 1, but if you’re in town do not miss an opportunity to take the tour. Their certified docents cover 50 buildings along the Chicago River and 100 years of history.

í Navy Pier

PIER INTO CHICAGO

Navy Pier (p.53) is surely on your itinerary with it being the top tourist and leisure destination in the Midwest. With the Chicago Children’s Museum, The Chicago Shakespeare Theater, IMAX Theatre, cruises, Miller Lite Beer Garden, and the Centennial Wheel, you could easily spend a weekend revisiting Navy Pier. For a taste of the diverse cultures that call Chicago home, make sure to attend the Neighborhoods of the World events to experience cultural dancing, art, crafts, food, and more.
