YOUR COMPLETE GUIDE TO CONCIERGES’ TOP PLACES TO EAT, DRINK, DO, AND SHOP IN 2019 Chicago is a city where there are so many exciting things to do that it will make your head spin. From amazing restaurants to poppin’ nightlife, enthralling attractions and tours to one-of-a-kind shopping experiences, there is no doubt that you will find something you love. The challenge can be narrowing down your options! We polled more than 600 concierges to compile this comprehensive guide of their favorite places around Chicago so that you can experience the city in all it’s glory. Who better to offer advice on the best Chicago offers than the people who are bonafide Chicago experts? That’s why we annually celebrate Concierge Day, proclaimed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel nine years ago. For the past nine years, we have honored concierges across the city at the Concierge Favorites Awards and this year was no different. Award winners include the best in dining, nightlife, culture and attractions, and shopping, all voted on by Chicago concierges - and it’s all right here in this magazine! Insider’s knowledge and hard work of concierges are what makes Chicago a city people love to visit, and we are proud to honor them through this issue of Concierge Preferred Magazine.

3 FAVORITE CHICAGO BLUES BARS By Katie Cooper We can’t talk about Chicago without talking about the blues. Popularized by sounds of the electric guitar and harmonica, the Chicago blues dates back to the early 20th century. These were the days when revered musicians like Muddy Waters, Earl Hooker, and Buddy Guy reigned supreme. And the locales made famous for hosting them were fresh on the scene. If you’re ready to relive the glory days of this one-of-a-kind musical genre, look no further than these three blues-filled destinations in the heart of the city. Bassment Find the entrance to this speakeasy-inspired bar in an alley, where upon arrival, you’ll be greeted with street art, exposed brick, and the moody sounds of funk, jazz and of course, blues. You’ll also find a unique menu of craft cocktails, like The Bathtub filled with Tito’s, jalapeño syrup, lemon foam, and a miniature rubber ducky on top.

Kingston Mines Live blues bands play well into the morning (4 a.m. Su-Thurs and 5 a.m. Sat) at this well-known favorite in Chicago’s Lincoln Park. It’s where you’ll find regular, local favorites like the Joanna Connor Band and Giles Corey playing their weekly sets spread across two separate stages. In addition to the sounds, Kingston Mines also serves up a full BBQ menu. Order up some St. Louis style pork ribs or a serving of their Down Home Rib Tips. No matter how you dice it, this Chicago blues experience is sure to be one that feeds both body and soul. Buddy Guy Legends Opened in 1989 by Buddy Guy himself, Buddy Guy Legends is known for its showcasing of both upand-coming and famous acts from the world of blues every night of the week. They’re also known for their Louisiana-style cajun menu featuring their awardwinning gumbo, jambalaya, catfish po’boys, and more!

3 WAYS TO ENJOY HARD ROCK CAFE Go and Love Yourself Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and whether you have a Valentine or not, Hard Rock Cafe has something for everyone! Special menus will be on hand for both couples and singles out to celebrate the day of love, plus everyone can enjoy a special edition of Live Band Karaoke just for Valentine’s Day!

TOP CHICAGO COMEDY STAGES FOR A NIGHT OF LAUGHS By Katie Cooper When it comes to a good chuckle, Chicago is no stranger to comedic talent turned household names. Jim Belushi and Robin Williams were both born in Chicago. Tina Fey and Michael Meyers both spent time early on in their careers studying and performing at The Second City. From stand up to improv, choose your own adventure and hold onto your seats. Here are three of the top Chicago comedy venues worth putting on your list of to dos. Comedy Sportz Since 1987, this 137-seat theater in Lakeview has entertained visitors of all ages here in the Windy City. Comedy Sportz itself is one of the longest-running, game-based, family-friendly comedy shows in the country with locations across the country. Shows rotate throughout the week but their signature show follows a 90-minute format with two competing improv teams and referees, naturally.

The Second City What do Chris Farley, Amy Poehler, Steve Carell, and Stephen Colbert have in common? They’ve all graced the stages of The Second City theater right here in Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood. And this list of talent is only just the tip of the iceberg. Every night of the week you’ll find a troupe of performers performing live shows of comedy theater and improvisation. They also offer classes for both adults and kids through The Second City Training Center in everything from directing and producing to writing for television. The Comedy Bar Local and national acts alike have passed through the doors of this stand-up comedy club located inside Gino’s East River North. Their own brewery and full menu, featuring Chicago deep dish pizza, make it a one-stop shop for grub and guffaws any night of the week.

THE EVOLUTION OF BLUE MAN By Katie Cooper Never Before Seen (or Spelled) Instruments

Original Music Compositions

"The Big Drum" may be self-explanatory, but that's where familiarity among this showcase of newly constructed and remastered instruments ends. From the part deconstructed xylophone, part drum hardware of the trigger vibes, to the spinulum, with its clear plastic disk affixed to a slide guitar-esque, stainless steel neck, these expressive new sounds are as much seen, as they are heard.

When not on stage, the men in blue are Grammynominated recording artists with multiple albums to their name. Their latest studio album titled "THREE" features the piece "Vortex," which will make its theatrical debut in Chicago through the whirling sounds of both PVC pipe and spinulum.

Audience Participation on Another Level Blue Man Group remains as interested in the audience as the audience is with them. In turn, new interactions will provide visitors the chance to share the stage with these characters like never before. One lucky audience member will rock out as only the performance art troupe knows how - through the playing of yet another new original instrument, the Mag Bells.

THIS CONCIERGE FAVORITE MAKES THE CUT By Reneh Abudayyeh International Museum of Surgical Science Your eyes will easily jump from the medical instruments, paintings, and statues to the breathtaking Gold Coast building they are housed in. Over 7,000 medical artifacts, 600 art pieces, over 5,000 medical books, and more are housed in this 20th-Century mansion that resembles Le Petit Trianon, a French chateau on the grounds of Versailles. Here iron lungs, Peruvian skulls with holes drilled in them, hearing aids from different eras, statues of medical greats, murals depicting important moments in medical history, and more will enlighten those with or without any medical knowledge.

SEE IT BEFORE IT'S GONE: SNL EXPERIENCE

51

By Erica Abdnour It's a Hot Ticket This museum is a concierge favorite and for good reason - it's so popular that it's timeline extended three more months! New York’s hardest ticket to get has brought a wildly impressive exhibit to Chicago and you’ve got through the end of March to see it. Originally scheduled to end in 2018, a massive demand and high popularity of this incredible exhibit influenced the SNL Experience to stick around. Fun Social Media Ops From costumes to sets and everything in between, you will be amazed at the day by day walk-through of how each show is made just in time for Saturday night. Take photos of the 500+ artifacts, and even sit on the Wayne’s World couch, hang out on the Weekend Update set, and see popular costumes like Mary Katherine Gallagher, Harry Caray, and The Church Lady. Amazing BTS History From the creation of SNL to the show in present day, hear how cast and crew have evolved this popular American staple over the past several decades. From letters from Oprah to original scripts, you’ll be amazed at what you see and hear about SNL. Learn how each day of the week is spent in preparation for that week’s show, from brainstorming to writing, to costume and set design.
