PRESIDENT'S NOTE
CONCIERGE KNOW BEST All of us here at Concierge Preferred are happy to say that, by official proclamation from Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the City of Chicago recently celebrated its sixth annual “Concierge Day in Chicago” on January 28, 2016. It was a wonderful way to formally pay tribute for all Chicagoland’s concierges do to make Chicago the world class destination it is. They are the individuals who are working behind the scenes, answering questions, and coordinating important functions that truly enable tourism to thrive all while creating memorable experiences for their guests. It is because of that hard work, research, and insider’s knowledge that we polled over 600 concierges to compile a list of their favorite places around town. Let’s face it; it’s all but a proven scientific fact that concierges know more about Chicago than everyone else. And that’s everyone else combined. So what do they say the city’s top places are? Well, read on to find out! No matter if you’re looking to dine at one of the city’s best restaurants (p.18) or to spend an afternoon at a museum (p.48) it’s all here—and sourced from those who know Chicago best: the concierge. Sincerely,
Tim O'Malley President
Amber Holst Vice President

QUINTESSENTIAL CHICAGO Chicago Auto Show ï

FOUR FAVORITE FESTIVITIES By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago ALL OF CHICAGO’S A STAGE
As you read this issue you’ll realize that the concierges love the theater and for good reason, so it is kismet that Chicago Theatre Week (p.55) is taking place. For $15, $30, or sometimes less you can catch Chicago's award-winning companies put on gripping productions. You can experience “2666” at the Goodman Theatre (p.55), the always entertaining Blue Man Group (p.55), the classic “Cabaret” from Broadway in Chicago (p.55), “The Flick” from the Steppenwolf Theatre Company (p.56), and many more. REV YOUR ENGINES
If you need a break between plays then don’t miss out on the 2016 Chicago Auto Show (p.54). With one million square feet of vehicles on display this is the largest auto show in the country. The size of it comes with the perks of having some great debuts and otherworldly concept vehicles along with keynote presentations from auto industry leaders. If seeing the vehicles aren’t enough for you then make sure to check out the countless interactive exhibits

that highlight some of the technology living in many of the automobiles. DEFY THE ELEMENTS
When you spend the majority of your year indoors to stay away from negative temperatures you tend to get loopy, and there’s no crazier thing to do in the city than the Chicago Polar Plunge (p.54). This icy event allows you to splash your way into the freezing waters of Lake Michigan to support Special Olympics Chicago. Last year 4,500 people registered to take the plunge in 22-degree weather and they raised $1.1 million. Years past has seen celebrities like Jimmy Fallon, Vince Vaughn, Taylor Kinney, and Lady Gaga take the plunge. Chicago Polar Plunge ï

HOT SPOTS Seasonal picks from those who know best.
Anthony Gates, Concierge, DoubleTree Chicago Magnificent Mile
When my guests ask for the one restaurant to go to in Chicago, I steer them to the historic Gene & Georgetti (p.34). Serving the best specialties that Chicago’s known for in an old school setting, I just love the wood-framed walls and red carpeting. Make sure to try the broiled lamb chops and mostaccioli in meat sauce. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:
DD See It All Chicago Tours (p.56) DD Broadway in Chicago (p.55) DD The Second City (p.46)
EMERALD RIVER
Catch the biggest St. Patrick’s Day celebration outside of Dublin in Chicago. The party always starts at the dyeing of the Chicago River where at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers pour orange dye into the river that gives it the emerald green color that lasts about five hours. The best places to catch the dyeing is on the east side of the Columbus Drive bridge or anywhere on Upper or Lower Wacker Drive. After, head to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade (p.55) and then the countless Irish pubs in the city for a memorable time. D yeing of the Chicago î

Jessica Schmidt, Concierge, Corporate Concierge Services
My favorite spot is The Boarding House (p.34). The restaurant is beautiful and the wine glass chandelier is stunning. Not only can you enjoy dinner in a wonderful ambiance, but the food is incredibly flavorful. I personally love their seared scallops and their perfectly-cooked venison. If you love wine, there is an great list and the Grow a Pear cocktail is delightfully refreshing. 3 OTHERS TO TRY: DD Black Bull (p.38) DD The Bedford (p.38) DD The Aviary (p.43)
Melissa Driza, Chef Concierge, Kinzie Hotel
STK (p.36) is a perfect one-stop spot for a night out. This modern steakhouse boasts a sexy atmosphere—complete with DJs spinning current and throwback hits—and their wet-aged steaks are sure to melt in your mouth. Try sides like their jalapeno cheddar grits and start off with their seared scallops or tuna tartare. After dinner, unwind in the chic Champagne bar. Enjoy half off the entire wine list every Wednesday in February. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

5 FIRST TIME FAVORITES by Joel Mora @CP_Chicago
Every year we wait to see what restaurants the concierges will deem their favorites, and this year we have some restaurants making their debut on the list. Here are five of them.

MACAU MUNCHIES
Making a splash not only with the concierges but across all distinguished food blogs and publications is Logan Square’s Fat Rice (p.20). With a focus on Macanese food, being in a hip neighborhood, and having dishes at a great price point, it is no wonder why Fat Rice is a new favorite. “Communal seating and craft cocktails make for a unique atmosphere while you chow down on their braised sweet and sour pork shank or piripiri chicken,” wrote Caitlin Meeter, concierge at the Hotel Allegro. AMERICAN WARMTH
Tony Mantuano’s and Jeff Hogan’s River Roast (p.35) makes its longawaited appearance on the list. With the cold temperatures, it’s hard to think of a better place to get the much-desired warmth and comfort than with River Roast’s contemporary American tavern dishes. Their
entrees consist of mouthwatering roasted fish, beef, whole chicken, or pork and all of it is carved tableside. However, don’t let the limit of entrees fool you as the appetizers, sides, and bites allow the entrees to shine like you couldn’t think possible. It’s hard to resist country-fried rabbit, the foie and duck terrine, or the famous Hogan’s peas, which consist of pearl onions, bacon, and bibb lettuce. Jan V. Viscum, concierge at the Hyatt Chi-

cago Magnificent Mile, also recommends River Roast for brunch where there is live blues music. “Sit back, listen to the music, and watch the Chicago River roll by,” wrote Viscum. WINE AND AMERICANA
Concierges picked Seven Lions (p.20) as a favorite not just because it’s great for a meal after a visit at the Art Institute of Chicago or before a show but because it’s absolutely delicious. From the mind of master sommelier Alpana Singh comes this American restaurant with dishes like smoked duck bratwurst, brussels sprout and burrata toast, and octopus agrodolce along with classic American favorites. Furthermore, don’t miss out on the impressive wine list that only features American wines except for the Champagne. OLD FAVORITES
Although new to the list, Riccardo Trattoria (p.19) has always been a go-to recommendation for the concierges in the city. The highlight of this trattoria is the trippa alla fiorentina, which is a honeycomb tripe braised with vegetables, tomato sauce, and sprinkled with parmesan cheese. I know tripe doesn’t sound appetizing to some people, but if you’re ever going to try it make sure it is at Riccardo Trattoria where it’s a mystery how they can make it so tender and delicious. Of course, when you’re there why not try their other delectable Italian dishes like their perfectly cooked risotto with prawns and artichokes, orecchiette cinghiale with wild boar sausage ragout and garlic rapini, and their
spaghetti carbonara. RETURN OF A HOMETOWN CHEF
With the opening of one of their newer establishments, 4-Star Restaurnat Group brought chef Todd Stein back to Chicago who is notable for his stint at eateries like Piccolo Sogno and was working in Atlanta until coming back to open Remington’s (p.20). This restaurant is a guaranteed good meal in the hustle and bustle of Michigan Avenue with choices like their slow-roasted prime rib, their branzino with broccolini and lemon butter, and their barbeque ribs.

This new cocktail lounge is brimming with turn-of-the-20th-century memorabilia, including a phone booth and circus décor. Their cocktail program offers a fun, unique twist as each drink selection is printed on a deck of Tarot cards, with a new set being offered every night. What cocktail will be you enjoying tonight? Let the cards tell you. The space also plays host to a number of eclectic and eccentric live performances that run sporadically every evening. BEST OF THE ‘BURBS

CULTURE&ATTRACTIONS
FIVE CULTURAL MUSTS By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago ONLY IN CHICAGO
The largest private residence in Chicago at the time of its construction (1879–1883), the Samuel M. Nickerson House survives today as one of the few remaining examples of the grand homes erected by the wealthy of America’s Gilded Age. Housed in this historic landmark, the Driehaus Museum (p.52) offers a look at the lush settings afforded by the nouveaux-riches during that period and is a showcase for late 19th and early 20th-century art and design. Throughout the meticulously restored mansion, guests can get an up-close look at Tiffany Studios stained glass, Herter Brothers furniture, and artifacts from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. With an impressive roster of seasonal exhibits and programs, make sure to visit the special exhibit "Dressing Downton™: Changing Fashion for Changing Times," which opens on Feb. 9. To kick off the exhibition coming to Chicago, and the final season

of the popular television show "Downton Abbey®", the museum is presenting a selection of special programs including a signature lecture with set designer Jude Farr, author events, movie nights, as well as a series finale viewing party. The DuSable Museum of African American History (p.52) is a mustexperience cultural hub and one of the few independent institutions of its kind in the country. Named for Jean Baptiste Point DuSable, a Haitian of African and French descent who is regarded as the founder of Chicago, the museum’s diverse holdings include more than 15,000 pieces ranging from paintings and sculptures to historical memorabilia and print works highlighting African American history, culture, experiences, and achievements. Highlights of the collection include a Slow Walk to Greatness: The Harold Washington Story, which brings to life the words and accomplishments of Harold Washington, Chicago's 42nd mayor and the city’s first African American mayor. WORKS OF ART
No trip to Chicago would be complete without a visit to the Art Institute of Chicago (p.52), voted the #1 Museum in the World by Trip Advisor’s Traveler’s Choice Awards. Here you can explore America’s greatest collection of impressionist paintings—including works by Monet, Renoir, Seurat, and Van Gogh—before venturing to the Modern Wing where you can take in

From painting and sculpture to photography, video and other medium, artistic expression is everywhere at this museum. Whether you’re looking to reacquaint yourself with the great artists of our time or for memorable cultural experience in Chicago, it’s no surprise that the MCA remains at the top of concierges’ to-do lists each year. The Chicago Cultural Center (p.54) is a city landmark for exquisite art, architecture, music, theater, and history. The most prominent elements of the historic building are the two famous glass domes including the world’s largest Tiffany dome that rests atop this People’s Palace. With its free art exhibits, renowned performers, and glorious architecture, this is one Chicago icon that’s not to be missed.
