publisher/editor's note

Go Explore! A dynamic city on the shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago boasts art museums, ethnic neighborhoods, architecture, nightlife, and superb shopping that rivals the offerings of any international city. Chiefly among those offerings? Our renowned eateries, helmed by some of the most celebrated chefs in the country. From red-hot restaurants (p.18) to our ever-expanding roster of local breweries (p.40), there’s no shortage of things to do during your stay in Chicago. Additionally, our great city is honored to host the U.S. Travel Association’s annual IPW conference (April 5–9), the premier marketplace for bringing international travelers to America. Chicago last hosted this prestigious event in 1998. It’s no secret that since then, our city has evolved tremendously. Millennium Park (M6;D3) has gained global recognition, our dining scene has been transformed, we’ve added a stunning Modern Wing to the Art Institute of Chicago (p.52), introduced the world to The Ledge at the Skydeck Chicago (p.58), and so much more. With beloved icons and new additions that perfectly complement the fabric of our city, we couldn’t more proud to show off our hometown. So what are you waiting for? Go out and explore! Sincerely,

Jim Gilligan Publisher & Vice President

FIVE SPRING, FEVER-INDUCING ACTIVITIES

â Baconfest

By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago

ä Green City Market FRESH FEAST Named one of the ten best farmer’s markets in the United States, Green City Market (p.60) will finally be moving back outside, and make sure you go with an empty stomach. Yes, visiting the farmer’s markets helps the struggling farmer but once you try a crepe, smoothie, fresh blueberries, and pasta you’ll realize the farmers are helping your struggling palate. Many of Chicago’s greatest chefs and restaurants get ingredients from the market. Enjoy cooking demonstrations, live music, and probably some of the best meat available in a farmer's market in the entire country. TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME Did you hear that? No, it’s not the return of thundersnow but the crack of a bat because baseball season is back. This year might be the biggest baseball year for Chicago as Wrigley Field (p.64), home of the Cubs (p.60), celebrates its 100th birthday and will be blowing out the candles all season. The ballpark

will commemorate with throwback uniforms, retro toys, specialty foods, performances, and entertainment, and maybe even a championship. On the South Side, the White Sox (p.60) are looking to heat things up, and with the big signing of Cuban slugger Jose Abreu the Sox are hoping for a return to their 2005 greatness.

Seasons 52 (p.26) is a perfect spot for a dinner date and offers a great selection of foods that are all under 500 calories. Make sure to try the wood-roasted pork tenderloin and then the Mini Indulgences, which are individual servings of classic desserts. 3 OTHER TO TRY: • Shopping on State Street (p. 17) • Renee Day Spa (p.15) • Vertigo Sky Lounge (p.46)

â Orange Dot First Fridays SPRING-TOBERFEST With Maifest (p.60) you don’t have to wait until October in Chicago to strut in your lederhosen and take swigs from your beer stein. From May 29 – June 1 celebrate German heritage with brats, schnitzel, Hofbrau, and live music along with the arrival of spring. Taking place in the heart of Chicago’s German community in Lincoln Square (M5;B3), Maifest supports a number of German organizations—in addition to boasting the best Bavarian-style revelry to be found. WICKER WALK Visitors looking to explore outside of the Loop (M6;D2) must be tired of hearing about Wicker Park/Bucktown but with so many great establishments it can be difficult to conquer.

Nicole Deckert, Concierge Manager, Fashion Outlets of Chicago

Fashion Outlets of Chicago (p.14) is not your typical outlet mall and has something for everyone: Gap to Gucci; Disney to Diane von Furstenberg; Lindt to Lucky Brand; Carter’s to Coach; Prada to Puma; and more. They also have remote airline check-in for O’Hare Airport (restrictions apply). 3 OTHER TO TRY: • Kings Rosemont (p.48) • Fogo de Chão (p.27) • Rosemont (M8)

â Maifest Orange Dot First Fridays (p.60) showcases the area’s best restaurants, bars, shops, and attractions featuring specials and collaborations. The first Friday of every month you can spend from 5 – 10 p.m. bouncing between art therapy, sake tastings, delicious burgers, and handcrafted jewelry. No Orange Dot First Friday is the same because no shop in Wicker Park/ Bucktown is the same. DIVINE SWINE Baconfest Chicago (p.60). I really shouldn’t have to write anything else those words should be enough, and you’ve likely dropped the magazine and have entered into a full-on sprint to the UIC Forum (M6;F1) to fill your face with the bacon. Over 160 chefs will be creating bacon dishes that will surely challenge your mind and delight your taste buds. Don’t worry, you’ll be able to wash it all down with baconinspired cocktails and beers. Join the thousands who will be salivating April 25 – 26.

David Gonzalez, Concierge, Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago

Libertad (p.38) is perfect for a date night, a single diner wanting to make new friends at the bar, or for a large group that wants to have fun. RED-HOT SPOTS By Sean Patrick Wagner @SPDoubleYou Spring has sprung, and alongside it some of Chicago’s hottest and newest restaurants have sprouted up. So many, in fact, it seems as if diners only venture to places that are shiny and new. With a constantly expanding marketplace, restaurateurs have stepped up their game to compete. The result? Innovative, limit-pushing, and increasingly more delicious concepts in arguably the new center for American dining. SEAFOOD STUNNER In a sea of steakhouses emerges Kinmont (p.27), a sustainable seafood concept, focusing particularly on Midwest catch. Another home run from Element Collective (RM Champagne Salon, Nellcote, Old Town Social), Kinmont fits a wonderfully needed niche in an area of River North populated mostly by residences and businesses. Soft lighting, candles, and a massive chalkboard wall proclaims the Catch of the Day, and reminds us, “It’s our patriotic duty to eat oysters.” Carpet fabric hangs from the ceiling that either reminds you of a recording studio or a scene in “Aladdin;” either

äá Dusek's

à Kinmont

â Kinmont way, it’s gorgeous. Food wise, your journey begins with oysters, raw and chilled seafood, and small starter plates. The smoked lake trout complemented by Zingerman’s cream cheese is a stand out, the smoked fish dip is a dish worth living in and tasting daily,

19

äâ Green Street Smoked Meats

and Parker House rolls make paying for bread seem like the new standard. The rushing waters trout as well as the squid ink spaghetti were not only phenomenally beautiful but true palate pleasers. Kinmont food lingers in your memory making it a new mainstay in the neighborhood. HOMETOWN HOEDOWN Restaurant mogul, Brendan Sodikoff, now synonymous with incredibly delicious food, is at it again with Green Street Smoked Meats (p.35), a rowdy, country western style cafeteria, straight out of a scene in “Roadhouse.” The ridiculously tasty brisket, pork belly, and pulled pork go quick and once they’re gone, all that’s left are cocktails and suds. Speaking of, take your pick and fish your favorite classy canned beer out of the troughs across from the counter. Accompanied by classic barbeque sides like coleslaw and potato salad, the finishing touch is the loaf of white bread on the communal wooden tables that encourage the diner to make friends and slop up every last bite. The stadium seating in the back provides the diner a ticket to the show

and a bird’s eye view of all the action. More brisket? Yes, please. BOHEMIAN BITES & BREWS A recent addition to the everexpanding Southside neighborhood of Pilsen comes Dusek’s Board and Beer (p.34), a continental European approach to small plates from the Longman and Eagle gang. Dusek’s, housed in the fabulously old-world style Thalia Hall, compliments the third floor artistic space and the oozingly cool Punch House (p.45) cocktail bar in the basement. Sharable across the board, Dusek’s creatively separates the menu by grains and greens, by sea, and by land and air—a classic approach but effortlessly executed. The crispy pork shank, sweetbreads, and choucroute highlight the mains, and leave room for the wonderfully delicious brandade fritters. Don’t forget to get some greens in your life with the wood-roasted panzanella salad. Dusek’s ease of style and impressive beer program pair well with this neighborhood’s hungry clientele, and urges diners a swift return trip.

maps & transportation

M1

Navigating Chicago may seem daunting, but the city was set up on a simple grid system with State Street dividing east and west coordinates and Madison Street dividing north and south. Miles are divided into segments of 800, so for example, Chicago Avenue at 800 north is one mile north of Madison Street. If you prefer to ride rather than walk, taxis are plentiful and public transportation, especially the “L” train, is easy and inexpensive to use. The “L” also runs to both airports. See the listings below for more transportation options in the Windy City.

DRINK FROM THE SOURCE

âä Lagunitas Brewing

By Amber Holst @CP Chicago Here in Chicago, we have Goose Island founder John Hall to thank for making the city’s craft brewery scene what it is today. A worldly beer-lover, he was convinced that a Midwestern brew could trump any European beer out there. Since 1988, Goose Island (p.23) has been proving his notion correct with their selection of over 50 unique craft beers. Fast-forward 26 years and Chicago’s craft beer scene is hopping! Here’s a taste: LAGUNITAS BREWING COMPANY The highest profile and certainly the largest addition to the scene this year is the opening of Lagunitas Brewing Company Chicago (p.44). Based in Petaluma, Calif., Lagunitas is opening the doors and running the tanks at its $22 million brewing facility and taproom on the Near South Side in Douglas Park (M5;C2). Here, they’ll produce 250,000 barrels in the first year with an eventual capacity of 1.7 million barrels, making it the secondlargest craft brewer in the country and the biggest brewery in Illinois since the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Clearly the opening of this Chicago facility

makes good business sense, but for founder Tony Magee, it’s personal, too. For him, it’s a homecoming of sorts as he was born and raised here in Chicago. While the brewery began operation in March, the Taproom opens the first week of May and will give guests the city’s most unique brewery tour experience. How so? Just picture entering through a crazily-lit tunnel with pictures showing the 22-year history of Lagunitas, going on a free group tour across catwalks 26 feet up in the air, and relaxing with bites and beers high above the action in a glass-encased room. Sounds incredible, right? It is. DRYHOP BREWERS With a focus on mainly hop-centric ales, DryHop Brewers (p.23) offers up an incredible selection of brews only available at their Lakeview (M7;L1) location. Dubbed a brewery and a kitchen, all menu items here are

prepared from scratch and locallysourced, setting the bar high when it comes to brewery fare. Whether you’re popping in for brunch, lunch, or dinner, the staff here is equally as warm and inviting as the atmosphere. So venture up to the North Side and discover the wonders of drinking a craft beer at the source. REVOLUTION BREWING Revolution Brewing’s (p.45) brewpub in Logan Square (M5;B3) has quickly become somewhat of a neighborhood institution. Enjoy taster sizes of any of the 14 taps featuring their eponymous brews and sample other local craft beers, too, while snacking on bacon fat popcorn (a must) and beer friendly fare. Located in a 100-plus-year-old building, the once dusty warehouse that sat vacant for years has been transformed into a welcoming des-

tination that’s as warm and cozy as their two hardwood bars. So belly up and drink like a local. HALF ACRE Since opening in 2009, North Center’s (M5;B3) Half Acre (p.43) has been a favorite for locals whose Daisy Cutter beer remains a prevailing favorite for those looking to buy a growler of the good stuff. Learn a thing or two about the brewing process on one of their incredible guided tours, or settle into their recently-opened Tap Room for an afternoon of sampling the establishment’s celebrated beers. Oh, and they’re also the first brewer in Chicago to can beer. As they proudly state, “We opt for the 16oz tallboy format, one full pint of freedom.”

STAY LOCAL, GO GLOBAL By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago TAKE A TOUR OF SOME OF CHICAGO’S MOST DIVERSE—AND DELICIOUS —NEIGHBORHOODS GREEKTOWN Chicago’s Greektown (M6;D1) is a three-block stretch along Halsted Street that represents what was once an area populated by close to 30,000 Greeks. However, Greeks or no, Greektown retains the identity and spirit of both those who built it and those who visit it today. Here you can find the pinnacle of Greek cuisine in Chicago, from restaurant’s signature saganaki (“Opa!”) to baked delicacies and more. Located at the south end of the stretch, make sure to stop by the National Hellenic Museum (p.52), a newcomer to the cultural scene and a spot that celebrates the heritage not

UPTOWN Once a thriving setting for the roaring `20s, Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood is without question a gem of the city! While there, make sure to check out the Green Mill Jazz Club (p.48).
