BEST FOOD OUTSIDE OF CHICAGO’S RESTAURANTS By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago

In Chicago good food isn’t restricted to restaurants. When the summer arrives these events offer better food than many restaurants in other cities across the country.

Baconfest Chicago î

SWINE AND DINE

It’s likely that you might not have known that all pigs aren’t the same. In fact there are a breeds of pigs that can be traced back to before industrial farming, and they’re known as heritage pigs. Cochon 555 (p.51) is not only a culinary competition but a delicious opportunity to learn all about heritage hogs while dining on them. Five chefs cook over 2,000 pounds of pork—leaving no piece behind—all paired with wine, craft beer, and cocktails. In addition to the mouthwatering pork, drinks, and notable judges, guests will enjoy pop-up experiences every 20 minutes featuring ramen and tartare bars, signature desserts, sponsored bites and drinks, and more. If 2,000 pounds of heritage pigs aren’t enough you’re in luck because Baconfest Chicago (p.51) is back. It

is cured-meat madness as over 100 chefs create delicious bacon concoctions that last year included dishes like tropical pork belly satay, bacon and wild boar arepas, bacon and fudge ice cream, among other plates. FARMER’S MARKETS

If for some reason you need some variety then don’t miss out on Green City Market (p.51). Yes, visiting farmer’s markets helps the struggling farmer but once you try a crepe, smoothie, fresh blueberries, and pasta at Green City Market you’ll realize the farmers are helping your struggling palate. The food sold here Green City Market ï

Green City Market ì

is so good that many of Chicago’s greatest chefs and restaurants get ingredients from the market. You can even catch some of these chefs giving cooking demonstrations at the market like chef Damarr Brown of MK. WASH IT ALL DOWN

If you’re feeling thirsty then enjoy the outdoors with a fresh brew at the Chicago Beer Classic (p.51). Held on Soldier Field, over 75 breweries will offer their craft brews while attendees enjoy live music, food, and more. Experience some of Chicago’s local breweries like Revolution Brewing, Half Acre Beer Company, Lagunitas Brewing Company, and others. PIG SKIN

Take a break from all the food and experience the return of the NFL Draft (p.52). With over 200,000 people attending the festivities at Draft Town in Grant Park during the 2015 NFL Draft, the first one outside of New York in decades, the city and the NFL are looking to make this year’s draft even bigger and better. Expect more interactive events, player meet and greets, food, drinks, and the new class of NFL rookies. Baconfest Chicago ï

Named one of Chicago’s top 10 restaurants, The Blanchard (p.16) offers a not-tobe-missed dining experience. Serving up French cuisine with a contemporary flair, the service and atmosphere is as enchanting as the food itself. A highlight on the menu are the various preparations of foie gras and their libations are a must as is dessert. 3 OTHERS TO TRY: DD Cafe La Cave (p.36) DD North Pond (p.16) DD Angry Crab (p.36)

Myles Shapiro, Concierge, Warwick Allerton Hotel

For a neighborhood trattoria with Romaninspired cuisine, I highly recommend Tre Soldi Trattoria and Pizzeria (p.34). The food is fresh and local, the service is top-notch, the atmosphere is upscale and elegant, and the prices are very reasonable. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

DD The Art Institute of Chicago (p.46) DD Green Street Smoked Meats (p.36) DD Strings Ramen Shop (p.16)

Rebecca Starodub, Concierge, Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel

When I have guests looking for family friendly activities I always recommend they visit The Chicago Children’s Museum (p.46) at Navy Pier. Older children can explore how skyscrapers are built or imagine they are a paleontologists, and toddlers will find plenty of ways to stay busy in the Kids Town area. Added bonus? Every Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. is Target Free Family Night. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

DD Lincoln Park Zoo (p.56) DD Shedd Aquarium (p.46) DD The Field Museum (p.46)

DINING

DESTINATION DINING By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago

Whether you’re looking to grab lunch after shopping along the Mag Mile or for the ideal dinner spot after taking in the sights downtown, here’s a look at five concierge-approved dining destinations whose locations can’t be beat.

Seven Lions ìî

OFF THE MAG MILE

Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse (p.16) is a perpetually-packed Rush Street heavy-hitter, which is named after the onion-garnished Gibson martini, and is the only restaurant group in the U.S. with its own USDA prime certification. A quintessential Chicago experience, delve into offerings like their porterhouse and rib-eye, massive Australian lobster tails, ridiculously large sides, decadent desserts, and first-rate martinis. Whether you’re looking to nibble and nosh in the restaurant’s swanky— and expansive—bar area or to dine upstairs or on the sidewalk patio, the service, cuisine, and people watching available here are second to none. Labriola Ristorante & Café (p.17) is ideally situated on the Magnificent Mile (M9) and offers a variety of L abriola Ristorante & Café ïì

15

Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steak House í

options for dining and drinking. The venue houses a full-service restaurant, La Stanza, with outdoor seating for lunch and dinner, a cocktail lounge called The Bar that offers food from the restaurants, and the Café and Bakery offering all sorts of baked goods in addition to a Neapolitan-style pizza kitchen. So if you’re not quite sure what you’re in the mood for or have differing cravings within your group, this is the perfect spot as it has a bit of something for even the most finicky of eaters. NIGHTLIFE

IMBIBE OUTSIDE By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago

From swanky rooftop lounges to cozy patios, here’s a look at concierges’ five favorite places to unwind out of doors. Cerise (p.40), the rooftop bar and lounge located on the Virgin Hotel’s 26th floor, boasts a whimsical and playful aesthetic of bold hues, expansive views of Chicago’s historic architectural skyline, and an Izakaya-inspired menu of small dishes that pair perfectly with their beer, wine, and cocktails. The lounge expands the entire width of the hotel, including a terrace that wraps around three sides and an assortment of large, plush couches both indoors and out. A 300-seat patio with 114 selections of local and global beers available at any given time nestled in the shadows of some of Chicago’s most treasured architectural gems? Yes, it exists. Located adjacent to the Tribune Tower on the Magnificent Mile (M9), Howells & Hood (p.40) is the perfect spot to people watch, linger, and soak up the glorious spring sun. In addition to their expansive beverage program, they also offer up a menu chock-full of clever twists on American cuisine.

Howells & Hood ì

The fourth floor Garden at Celeste (p.40) is a stunner, transporting you into an urban oasis overlooking the lively River North neighborhood below. With its ivy-covered walls and Victorian-style seating arrangements, this cozy space is both playful and luxurious. Sip from vintage-inspired punch bowls with friends or give yourself some time to unwind with refreshing libations like the Wayward Collins with Bombay gin, pear, and honey. It’s one of the area’s true hidden gems. Head up to the fourth floor of the Godfrey Hotel and you’ll find I|O (p.40) rooftop lounge. This sprawling, 15,000 square-foot indoor/outdoor playground features a retractable roof, panoramic city views, a fire pit, shimmering water elements, a video wall, and more. Whether you’re looking to share pitchers of their signature white sangria or kick back with a simple gin and tonic, this is an ideal spot for some day drinks or a late night out. If you’re looking for a bite we recommend their lamb “lollichops” or duck quesadilla. Beautifully perched on the 13th floor of the new Chicago Athletic Association’s hotel is Cindy’s (p.40), a rooftop restaurant and bar with a

striking open-air terrace. Offering downright awe-inspiring vistas of Millennium Park (M6;D3) and Lake Michigan, the airy atmosphere here is reminiscent of a Great Lakes beach house complete with gorgeous greenery, picnic-style seating, and indoor/outdoor spaces equipped with fire pits. Their elevated, shareable fare works perfectly in tandem with their spirit-driven beverage program. One visit and you’ll soon see why it’s one of the hottest spots to be around town.

OUTDOOR CULTURAL FAVORITES

By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago

To all those who suffer Chicago-like winters, do not let one minute of sunshine escape you. Those fortunate enough to live in warmer climates you’ll realize no one knows how to celebrate spring like those who experience so little of it. So get outside, and enjoy some of the concierges’ favorite outdoor cultural attractions. TERRIFIC TOURS

There’s nothing wrong with walking aimlessly as the city is beautiful to just take in, but you never know what important landmarks you might be missing and that’s where tours come in. The Chicago Architecture Foundation (p.46) has been highlighting one of the city’s best features for 50 years. Experience the food and buildings that came out of the 1893 World’s Fair, tour the new 606/ Bloomingdale Trail, or learn more about the vision behind new concierge favorite Maggie Daley Park. However, do not leave Chicago without doing their River Cruise Aboard Chicago’s First Lady Cruises (p.56) where you’ll get an immersive view of all our quintessential skyscrapers along the gorgeous Chicago River. Chicago History Museum (p.46) houses a lot of great exhibits inside their Lincoln Park building, but in May they host ChicaGO24 (p.51). The museum holds 40 expert-led tours

Lincoln Park Zoo ì

in 24 hours where visitors will learn about all the great stories that live in the city. Learn about Chicago’s rich and famous on a running tour, walk through the beautiful Graceland Cemetery, discover the street art and graffiti of Logan Square, relive the 1950s Loop nightlife, and more. If your feet get tired of hitting the pavement cruise through the city on Absolutely Chicago Segway Tours (p.56). This concierge favorite provides unique looks at public art, architecture, city lights, neighborhood, and gangster tours. “Absolutely

Segway Tours have such incredibly knowledgeable and friendly tour guides that I know when I send my guests on tour with them they will come back raving about their experience,” said Jennifer Brody, concierge at the Trump International Hotel and Tower. ON THE RIVERWALK

Last summer the city saw the grand opening of the Chicago Riverwalk (p.46). This new, urban oasis, which is still being expanded, is separated into themed rooms. Last year we experienced the great eateries in The Marina with its outdoor public seating, the peaceful stairs of the River Theater, and the kayak opportunities at the Cove. They’ll be opening up in May with more rooms to come during the rest of 2016. “The river walk is a perfect stroll with tons of great eats along the way and beautiful architecture surrounding you from every angle,” said Gertruda Popinara, concierge at the Hotel Allegro. GO WILD

Lincoln Park Zoo (p.56) has been a treasure in Chicago since 1868 housing animals that represent more than 200 species. Many Chicagoans will tell you that if they could go every

day they would as the zoo also provides an excellent space to just rest and relax. The zoo also hosts great events like their after-hours Zoo Challenge where your costumedteam takes part in a scavenger hunt for prizes, and their Food Truck Social where you can enjoy delicious food from 5411 Empanadas, The Fat Shallots, DönerMen, Pierogi Street, Happy Lobster Truck, and more.

Jazz legend Louis Armstrong, civil rights leader Ida B. Wells and aviatrix Bessie Coleman were among the many prominent African Americans who lived or worked in Bronzeville and left an indelible mark on this South Side community’s development. Today, this former Black Metropolis is a treasure trove of historical and cultural landmarks and experiences – a living monument to the generations of African Americans who emigrated here from the South during the Great Migration at the turn of the 20th century. Stunning residential architecture and its storied history aside, the neighborhood's most striking, modern influence is in the realm of public art.

Chicago's Chinatown is one of the largest neighborhoods of its kind in the country and boasts an energetic culture that is reflected in its specialty shops, restaurants, and landmarks like Ping Tom Memorial Park. The main stretch juts south from Archer Avenue down Wentworth Avenue and just north of the ornate Chinatown Gate is Chinatown Square, the largest Chinese mall in the Midwest.
