quintessential chicago

â Alcala's Western Wear

THREE OF CHICAGO’S ICONIC NEIGHBORHOODS By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago Chicago’s neighborhoods are just as iconic as the Loop. Here are three neighborhoods you shouldn't miss. WEST TOWN You could say the world’s original skyscrapers are churches and West Town is full of hauntingly beautiful ones. Even before you step into St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral (p.50) you’ll notice the 13 copper domes 122 feet above you that represent Jesus and his 12 apostles. Inside, the nine-tier

ä Antique Taco

golden chandelier is the main attraction and brings the elaborate mosaics and frescoes to life. After, travel to the Wild West at Alcala’s Western Wear (p.14). It’s easy to giggle when you spot the large horse outside but inside Alcala’s is extremely serious about getting you the best in quality Western attire, and you’ll notice it as soon as you see their intricate cowboy boots. Now that you have your cowboy boots on, go get some chow at Frontier (p.42) where carnivores rejoice at the menu filled with game meats ranging from boar to alpaca. Enjoy it all in their rustic beer garden equipped with a fireplace and retractable roof. WICKER PARK/BUCKTOWN The heart of this colorful neighborhood lies in the artist colony in the Flat Iron Arts Building (p.50). The Holabird & Roche building itself will stay in your mind, but it’s the small artist studios on the second and third floors that set it apart. To increase your art credibility level get some vinyl at Reckless Records (p.16).

Sit under the stars in our spectacular Millennium Park (M6;D4) under the Pritzker Pavilion designed by architect Frank Gehry at the Grant Park Music Festival (M6;F3). Enjoy free concerts every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday featuring world-renowned artists and the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra. Bring your own picnic, a bottle of wine, and enjoy this magnificent venue for a romantic evening or a fun, group gathering. 3 OTHERS TO TRY: • Pearl Tavern (p.24) • BellyQ (p.34) • Twin Anchors (p.22)

ä Wrigley Field

photo by John Verkleir & Steve Browne/Flickr

Vinyl aficionados will find real gems in this Wicker Park staple but even those who aren’t will be impressed by the extensive collection of LPs. Alright, your level of cool has almost reached its max. Your final stage is the delicious Mexican fare at Antique Taco (p.20). The furniture may consist of repurposed items and antiques but the tacos, salads, and margaritas are nothing but fresh. I actively challenge you to find a better carnitas taco in Chicago. LAKEVIEW Celebrating its 100th birthday, visiting Wrigley Field (M7;J1) is a must. Babe Ruth hit his famous called shot in that park, the score is still changed by hand, and it once held the record for the most NFL games played in a

single stadium. We recommend getting a behind-the-scenes look of it all on a Wrigley Field Tour (p.62). Afterward, grab one of DMK Burger Bar’s (p.22) delicious grass-fed burgers. We’re partial to their bison burger or chorizo burger topped with guacamole and Sonoma jack cheese. Finish off your day with some drinks and a concert at Schubas Tavern (p.45). Voted one of the best clubs in America by "Rolling Stone," this intimate venue, housed in a 111-year-old neo-Gothic Schlitz Brewery-tied house, offers a diverse lineup of live music every night. Want to explore more of what these neighborhoods have to offer? Pick up one of the new Chicago Neighborhood Maps that include walking tours with these establishments and more.

â Reckless Records

John Dillon, Concierge, Ritz-Carlton Chicago

Bottlefork (p.27), Chef Kevin Hickey and Rockit Ranch Production’s new joint development, is a smash hit. Whether you’re coming in for something from the bottle or dining off the fork, you will not be disappointed. Popcorn sweetbreads are just one of the tremendously inventive American dishes you will find here. The gnocchi is akin to biting into a delicious fluffy cloud. 3 OTHERS TO TRY: • Three Dots and a Dash (p.44) • Embeya (p.34) • Nine Inch Nails/Soundgarden concert (p.56)

Marisa De Felice, Concierge, Sheraton Hotel & Towers Chicago

The Oriental Institute (p.48) features artifacts from the ancient Near East including a monumental statue of King Tutankhamun. When I view the elaborately displayed artifacts—including sections carefully taken from walls of the most hallowed structures in the world—I feel as though I can almost feel the hands of the skilled craftsmen who expressed their creative genius in the days of Abraham and the Egyptian kings. 3 OTHERS TO TRY: • Shula’s Steak House (p.34) • Garfield Park Conservatory (p.50) • Macy’s on State Street (p.12)

ICONIC EATS By Sean Patrick Wagner @SPDoubleYou Believing something to be an icon, or viewing something as iconic, is a preference based on personal experiences and choices you have made within your life. But can’t we all agree that often sensory exploration brings us to a certain place, a certain exact spot perhaps long lost in your memory that instantly triggers a perfect day or moment? Can’t that be thought of as iconic as well? Perhaps instances of these feelings can be found amongst a few iconic eateries across this great city we love. FAREWELL DEAR SAUSAGE KING If this is true, then first on the list of iconic Chicago eats is the one and only Hot Doug’s (p.22). Deemed as Chicago’s Original Sausage Superstore and Encased Meats Emporium, Hot Doug’s has been slingin’ their sau-

äâ Manny's Cafeteria and Delicatessen

sages to locals and foodies alike in the Avondale neighborhood since 2001. A fire and two locations later, they still draw a crowd and remain a Chicago institution. A Chicago-style hot dog is the tamest of the menu items, but just as delicious as perhaps the rotating "Game of the Week" or an always tasty Thuringer sausage. If it’s your first time always order a classic Chicago dog and venture into the unknown with their game sausages. Yak, anyone? But alas, all good things must come to an end, so let the mourning process begin because Hot Doug’s recently announced “permanent vacation,” beginning the first week of October. Basically what that means to the reader is you should probably go get in line now! A chef-driven, casual counter-

style eatery is something Doug Sohn, owner and proprietor, has taken great pride in over the years, and with wild sausage selections, foie gras dogs, and the always pined for duck fat fries, who wouldn’t be? Thanks, Hot Doug’s. You will be missed. GOOD OL' DELI For many, the ability to transport oneself to a different, simpler time always occurs when they step foot into Manny’s Cafeteria and Delicatessen (p.28), an almost indescribable eatery off Roosevelt Road in what’s now known as the South Loop. Riddled with memories and nostalgia, Manny’s has been serving hungry customers generous portions of their delicious home cooking since right after World War II. Although known for their corned beef and pastrami sandwiches, customers also hanker for their matzo ball soup, potato pancakes and wonderfully hearty dinner options that are complemented by a truly family-friendly experience. Family tradition is nothing new at this fourth generation-operated old world lunch counter, and the pride and history of their family and of Chicago practically jumps off the walls, with clippings and accolades commemorating this iconic Chicago tradition. CONE’S TO COOL OFF Growing up in Chicago, summer would not be complete without enjoying The Original Rainbow Cone (p.34), a cool treat on a hot and humid summer day, located in the southwestern neigh-

ââä Hot Doug's

borhood of Beverly. Since 1926, the recipe has been the same: chocolate, strawberry, Palmer House, pistachio, and orange sherbet—all flavors that make up childhood memories. Dessert seekers flock from all across Chicago by the droves. Especially popular on Sunday, this family owned ice creamery continues to relish in their simple, yet timeless, creation and blue-collar success. A perennial favorite at Taste of Chicago, it's no frills, just smiles and the best ice cream in Chicago. Take a trip down memory lane.

LOCAL OPTIONS By Luis Torres, Concierge, W Chicago Lakeshore From our iconic live jazz and blues scenes to historic watering holes, Chicago truly comes to life after dark. If you’ve got the urge to join in the fun, here’s a look at what the city offers. So read on and learn how to go out like a local with Luis’ top picks for a night on the town. ART ‘N SPIRITS In River North (M6;C1) there are some pretty unique places to spend a night out on the town, but on Clark Street just south of Chicago Avenue, you’ll find Gallery Bar (p.42). Located on the second floor, this restaurant/ art gallery/bar hybrid’s walls are decorated with graffiti, urban art, and photography from local artists. The loft-like space gives it an artsy vibe and a distinctly local and welcoming atmosphere. Start your night by grazing on items

from their global street food-inspired menu and add to the experience by enjoying one of their specialty cocktails or draft beer selections. Before you know it, you’ll find yourself drifting off, admiring the amazing artwork that adorns the walls. Additionally, Gallery Bar plays host to a slew of special

âä Rodan events ranging from live art shows and monthly, rotating exhibits from talented Chicago artists to live DJs spinning tunes until 3 a.m. on weekends. Not only are you enjoying great cocktails and bites, but you also get to view amazing art that is available for purchase while you feel the treble and bass of the weekend. Go and check out the art, grab a drink, and be sure to snack on the Ahi Tuna Nachos served on house-made wonton chips. BEATS & EATS If you’re from Chicago, you know it doesn’t get more local than the Wicker Park and Bucktown neighborhoods (M5;B3). That’s why if you’re visiting our city and are looking for a fun night on the town you must experience Rodan (p.43). Over a decade ago, Rodan firmly entrenched itself as a staple for the hip culture that exudes from this neighborhood and is still going as strong as ever. An Asian gastropub serving up inspired cuisine unlike any other, Rodan morphs into a swanky lounge each night with its signature cocktails like the popular Lychee

Royale, extensive sake selections, and craft beers flowing freely to the thumping soundtrack provided by the local DJs that spin there. One of the highlights of this sleek space are the high-tech touches like their giant projection screen that plays authentic video loops ranging from “Soul Train” to highlight reels of His Airness Michael Jordan back in his #23 Chicago Bulls days. Whether you want to taste the wonderful food creations, relax while sipping on a cocktail, or boogie the night away with some friends, Rodan is here to make you want more of what local Chicago has to offer and it’s here to stay.

â Osaka Garden

ONLY IN CHICAGO By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago From the prehistoric to ultramodern, our cultural institutions offer a bit of everything for those looking to broaden their horizons. While each of our world renowned attractions are worthy of a day of exploration in and of themselves, here’s a short list of our picks on what you simply can’t miss. MUSEUM CAMPUS FINDS If you’re heading to The Field Museum (p.48) make sure to introduce yourself to Sue, the largest, most complete, and best preserved Tyrannosaurus rex ever discovered. After, venture over to the neighboring Shedd Aquarium (p.48) and dive into a coastal environment of Beluga Whales, dolphins, and sea otters at the Oceanarium, which also happens to be the largest indoor marine mammal habitat in the world. Don’t leave before taking a peek at Granddad, an Australian Lungfish, who is the oldest fish in captivity having arrived at the Shedd for the 1933 World’s Fair. How to spot him? The four-foot

ä Skydeck Ledge

long, 25-pound legend likes to hunker down near the floor—except when he’s catching some air—of his river habitat home. HYDE PARK The largest science museum in the Western Hemisphere, submerge yourself in the actual U-505 German submarine at the Museum of Science & Industry (p.48) and visit their baby chick hatchery—one of the museum’s most beloved experiences—where you can watch as chicks peck and wiggle out of their shells to take their first steps. Located on Wooded Island in Jackson Park—just behind the museum— you’ll find one of the city’s best-kept secrets: the Osaka Garden (p.50). This Japanese strolling garden is one of a few remnants from the 1893 World’s Fair and features calm ponds, peaceful trees, and gorgeous landscaping. Some would argue that the real beauty of the garden is in its secrecy, a characteristic that truly makes it an escape. The DuSable Museum (p.48) is a must-experience cultural hub and one

47

â The Field Museum

â Shedd Aquarium of the oldest African-American–focused museums in the country, displaying documents and artifacts from the lives of overlooked or unjustly marginalized movers and shakers. Further North in Pilsen (M5;C3) visit the National Museum of Mexican Art (p.48). The largest Latino cultural organization in the U.S., you’ll find a 6,000-piece permanent collection, rotating exhibits and performing-arts showcases that represents an illustrious Mexican culture. SUCH GREAT HEIGHTS Chicago is home to the most forward-thinking architecture on the planet. Whether you’re looking to

marvel at our architectural wonders from the cavernous views of the Chicago River aboard one of the city’s boat tours (p.62) or see the skyline from Navy Pier’s (p.50) iconic Ferris wheel, there’s no shortage of ways to take in unimpeded views of our city’s architectural treasures. If you’re looking to defy gravity, then a visit to our two towers is definitely in order. See Chicago from a new angle at TILT, the brand-new feature at 360 Chicago (p.50). An enclosed, glass and steel moveable platform, TILT slowly tilts outward to a 30-degree angle, generating downward-facing views from one thousand feet above the Magnificent Mile (M9). Looking go to even higher? See if you have the courage to stand out at Skydeck Chicago (p.50). Perched atop the Willis Tower, the third tallest building in the world, the Skydeck is 1,353 feet above the ground and features The Ledge, a glass box experience extending four feet outside the building’s 103rd floor observation deck.

â 360 Chicago

Though stunning during winter, the Lincoln Park Zoo (p.62) comes alive in the summer. A Chicago staple for natives and tourists alike, it’s also our best bargain with complimentary admission year-round. Following that, North Pond (p.22) is one of Chicago’s most beautifully secluded restaurants and perfect for a sunset dinner. Judson Corrie Concierge, Waldorf Astoria Chicago
