To cool off, slide on chitecture Foundation Shop (p.43) for a Lego build. Open most weekday afternoons, come “See Why Design Matters." Saturday and Sundays, there are scheduled workshops for learning fundamentals to solve design challenges. After that, head to Skydeck Chicago (p.41) for a stunning view from the 103rd floor and walk out onto The Ledge. Completed in 1973, the Willis Tower—formally the Sears Tower—stands at 1,730 feet tall. For faster entry, purchase the fast pass ticket. â Bobby's Bike Hike On the Magnificent Mile, head to Dylan’s Candy Bar (p.40). Get a tackle box and fill the twelve compartments with your favorite candies. With families, the compartments can easily be divvied up between a group. Also on the Mag Mile, check out Marbles: The Brain Store (p.41). With plenty of mind-stimulating toys, from books to board games to brain teasers, this store is paradise for all ages. For lunch, bring your girls to American Girl Cafe (p.42), to be pampered like a princess. Don’t forget to bring your American Girl Doll. Navy Pier (p.41) is a hot spot for families. Catch a ride on the Ferris wheel and the carousel. This summer, the Chicago Shakespeare Theater (p.40) will be showing “Disney's The Little Mermaid” musical from July 3 – Aug. 16. Catch a boat ride on the giant and thrilling Seadog Extreme (p.41). For a more gentle cruise the Spirit of Chicago (p.41) offers lunch and dinner cruises on Lake Michigan, and you may be able to visit the captain. Near Navy Pier is Bobby’s Bike Hike (p.40), a great spot for bike tours geared towards all ages and all fitness levels. I recommend the Museums &
Parks at Sunset Tour, or Bobby’s Tike Hike: Kids Edition tour. With friendly service and knowledgeable staff, rest assured that your family are in good hands. Finish your evening with a treat from Eataly (p.42). On the first floor, they have a nutella bar and a gelato bar. Grab a crepe and a gelato and wind down for the evening. Finally, take a trip to Wrigley Field (p.41) to see the Chicago Cubs play baseball. Ride the train to Addison, and take a picture by the giant red marquee. Just beyond the marquee entrance they provide stroller storage at the service desk. Get a Chicagostyle hot dog, peanuts, crackerjacks, and always root for the home team.

â Summer Workouts
3 CAN’T-MISS EVENTS AT MILLENNIUM PARK By Amanda Cooper @CP_Chicago
During the summer month’s locals and visitors alike all find themselves enjoying the free outdoor activities on Chicago’s Great Lawn in Millennium Park (p.41). Best part of all? It’s a great, budget-friendly option the entire family can enjoy. Here’s a look at some of my top seasonal picks: SUMMER FILM SERIES Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. starting June 23 Enjoy free movies on Tuesday evenings all summer long on a big screen, 49 by 22.5 feet, at the stunning Jay Pritzker Pavilion (p.40) in Millennium Park. From the size of the screen to the state-of-the-art sound system and the incredible cavernous views of the city’s beautiful skyline, there is not a bad seat on the lawn. Movies are typically fan favorites like "The Wizard of
ä Downtown Sound
Oz" or "Top Gun." Before heading over stop at the local wine and cheese store Pastoral (p.41) to grab some snacks— the lawn is BYOB—and spread your blanket to enjoy one of the best experiences to be had in Chicago during the summer months. SUMMER WORKOUTS Saturdays 7 a.m.– 11 a.m. starting June 6 Get the family out of the hotel and enjoy alfresco yoga, pilates, and Zumba classes on Millennium Park’s Great Lawn every Saturday. The free Summer Workouts (p.40) run about 45-minutes long and are open to people of all experience levels. DOWNTOWN SOUND Mondays and Thursdays, June 1–July 23 at 6:30 p.m. Millennium Park’s popular Monday night music series Downtown Sound (p.40) was so popular they added another weekday this year. Downtown Sound showcases indie rock, electronic, and world music artists. There’s something about listening to live music with friends and family among Chicago’s skyscrapers at sunset that I can’t explain, you’ll just have to experience it yourself.

EAT OUT WITH THE KIDS By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago
Pint-sized patrons, rejoice! Here’s a look at some of the best bets for family dining around town. BREAKFAST It is no secret that Chicago’s really into doughnuts. While great options dot the downtown landscape, we’re partial to Glazed & Infused (p.42). With seasonal flavors ranging from blackberry cheesecake with homemade blackberry jam and vanilla bean cheesecake filling to chocolate doughnuts that are almost too pretty to eat, grownups will be just as impressed with the offerings as the kids. LUNCH With numerous Chicago locations, Yolk (p.42) is an ideal spot for breakfast or lunch with the tykes. The bright and sunny space is incredibly welcoming and their menu, featuring enormous omelets to bacon waffles and everything in-between, offers something for everyone in your family. DINNER The recently opened Labriola Ristorante & Café (p.42) is ideally situated on the Magnificent Mile and
ä Yolk
â Glazed & Infused
ä Labriola Ristorante & Cafe
offers two family friendly dining options within one space. From the full-service Italian restaurant to the bakery cafe, the super seasonal menus offer a new take on the Italian classics your family loves. Barbecue may be a Southern tradition, but believe it or not, Chicago’s home to many great barbecue joints that have put their own Midwest spin. Located all over the city one of our favorites—that’s also kid friendly—is Wicker Park’s phenomenal Lillie’s Q (p.42). This cozy spot serves up all of the Southern staples including boiled peanuts, fried pickles, hush puppies, pulled pork and chicken sandwiches, shrimp and grits, a crawfish roll, stone ground grits with house-made bacon, and so much more. DESSERT Afterward head to nearby Margie’s Candies (p.42), an old-school Bucktown mainstay that has been a part of the local candy scene since 1921. This sweet spot is half candy store, half sit-down ice cream parlor and offers just the right amount of kitsch and the best sundaes in town.

ROBOTS, AMPHIBIANS, & KNIGHTS. OH, MY! By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago
MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY (P.41) Located in the stunning Hyde Park neighborhood, this sprawling museum is home to 2,000 exhibits ranging from a simulated coal mine and real U-505 German submarine to a fairy castle. While there, make sure to check out their special exhibit Robot Revolution. The exhibit will allow guests to step into a visionary world where robots are not just a curiosity, but a vital asset. The exhibit comes to life with a collection of cutting-edge robots that have been secured from some of the most innovative global robotics companies and universities. From Yume Robo, the climbing robot that greets you at the exhibit entry while traversing up and down a ladder, to the Recon Scout® Throwbot® XT that can literally be thrown into a dangerous situation to collect vital information— guests will be awed by the breakthroughs and capabilities of these machines.
ä Museum of Science and Industry
The exhibit will feature four areas that delve into various aspects of robotics and offer specific hands-on activities with amazing robot specimens. WENDELLA BOATS (P.45) Summer in Chicago is synonymous with many things, especially fireworks! Navy Pier plays host to a spectacular fireworks display every Wednesday and Saturday night during the warmer months and there’s no better vantage point for the kids than aboard one of Wendella Boat Tours’ Summer Fireworks Tours. Take a nautical voyage as you ooh and aah at the illuminated night sky! MEDIEVAL TIMES DINNER & TOURNAMENT (P.41) Take your young lords and ladies to Medieval Times where they’ll be transported to the long-ago era of kings, princesses, and knights on horseback. Feast on four courses of family-friendly fare as you cheer for one of six knights competing in the joust and other tests of skill. From hand-to-hand combat to awe-inspiring horsemanship (and even a bit of falconry), your kids will be entertained from the moment they walk through the castle doors. SHEDD AQUARIUM (P.41) To marvel at everything from adorable water-dwellers to downright
sea monsters, head to the Shedd Aquarium. Highlights here include the stunning Abbott Oceanarium where you can visit with beluga whales, Pacific white-sided dolphins, sea otters, and the special amphibians exhibit. This new special exhibit will bring you up-close with 40 species of frogs, salamanders, and rarely seen caecilians. Learn how amphibians’ lives are full of change, from their life cycles to their adaptations to live in nearly every environment on Earth.

BEACH BAR BIKE HIKE By Mark Kraemer, Concierge, Hotel Palomar
For those who prefer sandy stretches to bellying up to a bar, you’re in luck. Chicago’s beaches are equipped with lakefront drinking and dining options, which are easily accessible via the stunning Lakefront Trail. One of my personal favorite ways to experience them all is by riding my bike and making a stop at each one. Here’s a look at the places I would visit starting downtown and heading north.
àä Castaways
â The Dock at Montrose Didn’t bring a bike? No worries. Chicago is one of the more bike-friendly cities in the country so you can easily rent bikes from Bobby’s Bike Hike (p.40), whose rentals include locks as well as bike helmets. Another option is Divvy (M1) bikes, who offers 24hour bike passes for $7. With Divvy, you can take an unlimited number of rides, but make sure to check your bike in at a Divvy dock every 30 minutes to avoid additional charges. OHIO STREET BEACH Caffè Oliva (p.42), located at the foot of Navy Pier (p.41), offers Mediterranean-inspired fare, playful cocktails, and is tucked away on a beautiful stretch of the lakefront. If you’re hungry, I recommend their grilled calamari and splitting one of their flatbreads alongside a glass of wine. OAK STREET BEACH Situated upon the sandy shores of Chicago’s most famous Beach, Oak Street Beach Food + Drink (p.42) is a lush oasis—complete with real
15 ä Caffè Oliva
palm trees—offering some of the city’s best people watching including beach goers, Michigan Avenue shoppers, and the lakefront fitness buffs. NORTH AVENUE BEACH Head further north and grab a seat on the rooftop at Castaways (p.42). The building resembles an ocean liner, so it’s impossible to miss. Here you can enjoy great views of beach volleyball games and, of course, the skyline. The first level features an ice cream cafe and beachside burgers with casual walk-up stands. The rooftop features tasty appetizers, sandwiches, fresh salads, and great cocktails in a very South Beach-inspired environment. MONTROSE BEACH The Dock at Montrose (p.42) is a sprawling, 3,000-square-foot beach bar offering up burgers, tacos, salads, and live music just a stone’s throw from the water. Another perk is that it’s also dog friendly, so it’s a popular stop for locals after bringing their canine companions to the nearby dog beach.
ä Divvy
HOLLYWOOD BEACH Probably the beachiest of all, Nacho Mama's (p.42) is a great, casual spot right off Hollywood Beach. A favorite with locals, this spot is ideal for a later afternoon snack and a couple of cocktails while soaking up both the sun and atmosphere. BERGER PARK Just a bit further north, tucked behind a charming old coach house in the Edgewater neighborhood, you’ll find the Waterfront Cafe (p.42). While there’s no sand, per se, you’re literally right on Lake Michigan. Food offerings range from crab cakes to apple walnut salad and they offer a roster of drinks making it an ideal, low-key way to end your beach bar crawl.

JOSE QUINTANA'S CHICAGO by Joel Mora @CP_Chicago
The Chicago White Sox (p.43) have a plethora of Hispanic players many of whom are making a significant impact in the Major Leagues, and one who is below the radar but constantly improving is Colombian pitcher Jose Quintana. Heading into his third year Quintana has thrown over 200 innings in each of his last two years with his ERA dropping every year. A lot of that success is not only due to his training inside U.S. Cellular Field, but training outdoors in many of the city’s beautiful parks as he enjoys the sights and people watching, which is also something he also likes to do in Colombia. However, just because he’s working hard doesn’t mean he is not enjoying everything Chicago has to offer— especially the food. After a win you might find Quintana celebrating with friends and family at many of the city's Brazilian steakhouses where
ä Signature Room at the 95th
ä Sabor a Café
he not only enjoys the food but the service as well. When he has the urge for some Colombian food the pitcher enjoys the dishes at Sabor a Café (p.42) where he likens the food similar to his mother’s food. Nothing gets more traditional than their bandeja paisa, which consists of grilled steak, pork skin, sausage, red beans, fried egg, corn cake, sweet plantains, and white rice. It’s a button buster. Quintana makes sure to take advantage of many of the city’s great attractions and activities with one of them being Navy Pier (p.41). The popular attraction serves as a place for him to relax, enjoy Lake Michigan, the sights of the city, and people watch. For some high-energy activity the pitcher enjoys the intensity of the Chicago Blackhawks and the passion of their fans at the United Center. Of course, Quintana loves venues that combine both the beautiful sights and delicious food, which is why when his family visits he takes them to the Signature Room at the 95th (p.42) at the John Hancock Tower. No matter how many times they visit they always want to go there. Read Jose Quintana’s Q&A in spanish at blog.conciergepreferred.com

A COURSE IN COURSE HOPPING By Rachel Luckett, Concierge, Corporate Concierge Services
You know that list of restaurants you’ve been dying to try but haven’t found the time? Knock them out in one fell swoop through course hopping. Now you’ll have time for all the summer festivals and cultural attractions. When traveling, I always find my list of must-try restaurants far surpasses the number of meals during the trip. You’ll run through that problem a lot here in Chicago because our best attraction is our food. My solution is to spread the love by eating each course at a different restaurant. Originally developed by a frugal, yet inquisitive student abroad—me—the course hopping system has proven to work wonders in encompassing the dining scene of a new city, especially the country’s culinary mecca. Course hopping is not recommended for families with young children or your not-so-patient friends. Embrace your adventurous side and enjoy the walks between restaurants, the refreshing new setting of each course, and the company that follows you along the way. With so many great neighborhoods to eat in, here are three standout Chicago course-hopping itineararies. WEST TOWN Start out with some craft beers and snacks like the chorizo deviled eggs or the Wisconsin cheese curds at Bangers and Lace (p.42). Make sure to wash them down with a Metropolitan Dynamo Copper Lager. Hop over to the Michelin-recognized restaurant Mana Food Bar (p.42) for some delicious vegetarian entrees like the mushroom saute over creamy polenta, or the artichoke-filled ravioli. Enjoy some

delicious beignets with espresso butterscotch at the Carriage House (p.42). RIVER NORTH Wet your lips with the The Berkshire Room’s (p.45) Workers on the Track Ahead consisting of rye, yellow chartreuse, dry curacao, and orange oil, and start out with their duck confit and sweet potato croquettes. Head to Europe at the Bohemian House (p.42) with the roasted duck leg with apples, turnips, cider, smoked hazelnuts, and sweet and sour cabbage. It’ll be difficult to pick one dessert at Beatrix (p.42) but you can’t go wrong with their caramel pie. WEST LOOP The Family Ties consisting of Bacardi gold, amaro abano, clove, and hand-pressed lime at The Allis (p.42) will surely open your appetite along with their Scotch eggs. After that you can pretty much gorge yourself with brisket, pulled pork, pork belly, and pork ribs at Green Street Smoked Meats (p.42). If for some reason you still have some space for dessert then you must try the seasonal gelatos and tarts at RM Champagne Salon (p.42).

ä Lollapalooza credit: Cambria Harkey
A ROCKIN’ CHICAGO SUMMER By Kimberly Collins, Concierge, Corporate Concierge Services No event defines summer in Chicago quite like Lollapalooza (p.44). With musical acts that are as eclectic as the concert goers themselves, Lollapalooza offers something for everyone. Here are my tips for making the most of your Lollapalooza experience. STAY HYDRATED With beer tents accessible in every direction and the early-August sun beating down, you can easily become dehydrated. Take care of yourself. Be sure to drink plenty of water even if you don’t feel thirsty. Investing in a Camelbak will be
one of the smartest decisions you can make and cooling stations are offered throughout the park in case you need to refill. PLAN AHEAD With 180 bands playing throughout the weekend, there is no way to see every show on your list. Plan accordingly. See what time your favorite bands are playing and at what stages. Two of your favorites playing at the same time? If the stages are close, you can likely catch the first half of one show and take a quick walk to catch the second half of the other.

27 action. Just make sure you and your friends have a meeting place for when the shows end. CHECK OUT ARTISTS YOU DON’T KNOW Festivals are a great way to discover new acts. Early acts yield a smaller, less pushy crowd and are great if you’re looking for something easygoing. After all, all acts start somewhere like Lady Gaga in 2007 when she graced the stage at 3 p.m. SEE PAUL MCCARTNEY Just do it. He’s a Beatle. You won’t regret it.

HAVANA ADVENTURE IN CHICAGO By Amanda Cooper @CP_Chicago
Chicago may be a bit further than 90 miles from Cuba, but you will be surprised by how much Cuban influence you can find in Chicago from cafe's to Afro-Cuban jazz. CAFECITO Start your morning at Cafecito (p.42) with a traditional cortadito or café con leche at this Cuban cafe. The chimichurri egg sandwich or guava and cheese pastry are perfect accompaniments. HAVANA GALLERY After breakfast, head North to Havana Gallery (p.44) in the Lincoln Park area. This gallery is the only gallery in Chicago devoted to contemporary Cuban art. The directors, during their visits to Cuba, discovered pieces of art they liked. These pieces were then brought back to Chicago. Most pieces are oil on canvas, but cover many artistic styles from abstract to nature-oriented realism.
ä Bordel
â Bordel
WHITE SOX GAME Baseball is one of Cuba’s beloved sports and the Chicago White Sox (p.43) have a long history with Cuban-born players. Dating back to the famed, late Minnie Minoso—who played with the Sox from 1951 to 1964, including a cameo in the 1980s—the White Sox have been the recent front runner of Major League Baseball teams acquiring talent from Cuba. Starting with the acquisition of one of my favorite Sox players Alexi Ramirez back in 2008 to today’s beloved first baseman Jose Abreu, the Sox have had 20 Cuban players to date. Don’t miss the appropriately named Cuban Comet sandwich, a traditional Cuban ham sandwich, named after Mr. White Sox himself, Minnie Minoso, available on the 100 level. 90 MILES CUBAN CAFE 90 Miles Cuban Cafe (p.42) is one of my favorite Cuban restaurants in the city. Bring white rum to mix with 90 Mile’s mojito mix or wine for sangrias, as this restaurant is BYOB. Some fan favorite traditional dishes are the ropa vieja, slow-cooked shredded beef flavored with onions and garlic in a creole sauce, and lechon, slowroasted pork in citrus mojo and house seasoning. After dinner, continue your hot Havana night at Bordel (p.43) for jazz on Wednesdays and live flamenco music and dancing on Saturdays.

SUMMER FEST GUIDE By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago
Chicago summers bring street closures to make space for the countless street festivals that take over the character-filled neighborhoods. For those who are hesitant to explore Chicago outside of the Loop the street festivals provide an excellent way to discover the atmosphere that brings true life outside of the cold steel of the big buildings. Here are some festivals that will help you dip your toe into Chicago’s neighborhoods. WEST FEST (P.45) July 11 – 12 Chicago Ave. between Damen Ave. and Wood St. $5 suggested donation
â West Fest credit: REP3 Photography
To get to know the great neighborhood of West Town head to West Fest where outside of the big music festivals actually brings some top-notch music talent that is ready to blow up, and it is curated by the rocking music club Empty Bottle. This year you’ll catch Dead Moon, Murder City Devils, NoBunny, and Swirlies. RIBFEST CHICAGO (P.45) June 12 – 14 Intersection of Lincoln Ave., Irving Park Rd., and Damen Ave. $5 suggested donation This 17-year old festival serves some of the best ribs across the Midwest along with other barbecue favorites like pulled pork sandwiches, sausages, burgers, wings, and even non-traditional items like octopus tacos and chocolate-covered bacon. As always you want to take your time and pace yourself through the festival, but if you want to see some fast eating then don’t miss RibMania VI where last year Miki Sudo defended her championship belt by eating 4.8 pounds of ribs from Uncle Bub’s BBQ in eight minutes. Make sure to wear your stretchy pants.

THE DOG DAYZ OF SUMMER (P.44) June 27 – 28 Goose Island Barrel Warehouse $75 admission I know it’s not technically a street festival, but it would be criminal not to mention a festival being put on by the best hot dog maker in the world, Doug Sohn. The owner and genius of the now closed Hot Doug’s is coming back for one weekend with a hot dog festival Chicago deserves. Doug will be serving up his famous gourmet dogs and duck fat fries. Goose Island will be showcasing their seasonal and specialty beers. The admission comes with Goose Island drink tickets, Hot Doug’s sausages, and duck fat fries.
ä Ribfest Chicago
31 ANDERSONVILLE MIDSOMMARFEST (P.43) June 12 – 14 Clark Street from Foster Ave. to Catalpa Ave. $10 suggested donation I don’t know how long street festivals have been around in Chicago, but Andersonville Midsommarfest will be celebrating 50 years this summer, and as always they’ll be doing it with a huge party. With five stages for bands, over 80 local artists and vendors, and an expected 50,000 people, this small Swedish neighborhood will transform into one of the biggest street festivals. Along with the great music, local food, and activities for kids, don’t miss out on the Swedish activities like dancing around the Maypole, free admission to the Swedish American Museum, and, of course, an ABBA tribute band. NORTHHALSTED MARKET DAYS (P.44) August 8 – 9 N. Halsted St. from Belmont Ave. to Addison St. For two days every year the LGBT mecca that is Boystown explodes into one of the funnest street festivals. Although it has an LGBT focus, Northhalsted Market Days is definitely open to all with three music stages that have featured top acts like Deborah Cox, Brazilian Girls, Olivia NewtonJohn, and the Pointer Sisters.

WALKABOUT IN THE WEST LOOP By Michelle Slaw, Concierge, The James The West Loop is one of the most exciting neighborhoods in Chicago right now. It is ever changing and evolving from an industrial area into one that is full of the hottest restaurants and cultural activities. In the midst of the culinary delights that you will happen upon, you will find yourself in a neighborhood steeped in Chicago history and becoming one of the most influential areas. Begin the day at The Allis (p.42) inside of the Soho House. The Allis offers coffee drinks and lighter breakfast options including breakfast sandwiches and pastries, all of which can be enjoyed on a well-appointed arm chair or sofa in the upscale yet relaxed sitting area. From there you can walk to the Haymarket Memorial (p.48), which commemorates the Haymarket Riot that occurred in 1886 where a bomb was thrown at police who were stopping a labor protest for

an eight-hour work day. After you take in a bit of history head over to Ramen Takeya (p.42) for some traditional ramen, sushi, and small plates in a great space that is made to feel like a back alley on the streets of Tokyo. After your ramen take a walk over to

33
àä The Allis Old St. Patrick’s Church. Old St. Pat’s, which survived the Chicago Fire, is one of the oldest buildings in the city. Then head over to the Athenian Candle Company (p.48). The Athenian Candle Company hand crafts candles for most of the orthodox churches in the city and also offers an array of religious merchandise—some of which can be very difficult to find. After perusing the unique items at Athenian Candle Company, an amazing dinner at TÊTE Charcuterie (p.42) awaits. Enjoy such fare such as housecured meat and house-made pate and sausage while watching the chef work in the open kitchen. Once dinner is done, take a stroll down to Union Park (p.48). One of the earliest racially integrated parks in Chicago, Union Park has hosted many famous musicians throughout the years. Union Park is now home to the Pitchfork Music Festival (p.48), a three-day festival that takes place every summer. It’s time to take in some live music at City
ä Haymarket Memorial
Winery (p.48). Although not just a live music venue, the winemaking process happens on site and is served in the restaurant and is also available to enjoy in the music. There is so much to see and do in the West Loop, it is always a different adventure every time you visit.

LINCOLN PARK AND OLD TOWN WALKING TOUR By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago
âä Lincoln Park Zoo
Housing the city’s largest park, the Lincoln Park and Old Town neighborhoods offer a plethora of activities for everyone, and with the sun shining it provides the perfect opportunity to explore this historic area. Here’s a walking tour to get you started. ALFRED CALDWELL LILY POOL A hidden gem in the city, the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool (p.47) is one of the best examples of Prairie School landscape architecture. In its inception it was a Victorian-style lily pool that was built to grow tropical water lilies, which of course didn’t survive in the winter. So when Alfred Caldwell came in for the redesign his response was to make it a symbol of the Prairie style known for having elements that are in harmony with nature and the prairies
of the Midwest. You can go through it all in 15 minutes, but it tempts you to stay, relax, and meditate for hours. LINCOLN PARK ZOO What started as a gift of two swans and then the purchase of a bear cub for $10 has turned into one of the few free admission zoos in the country that is open every day of the year. The Lincoln Park Zoo (p.48) houses 1,100 animals in its 49 acres including lions, polar bears, gorillas, giraffe’s, rhinoceroses, zebras, and more. With it being free, the zoo is not only a great attraction to visit on occasion but great to go anytime with a book and read while the lions are sleeping or the zebras are playing. The Farm-inthe-Zoo is also perfect for kids to get some country life in the city as they can watch cows being milked and see livestock up close.

â Café Brauer credit: Daniel O'Neil PATIO AT CAFÉ BRAUER After all that walking enjoy some cocktails, beer, and food at the Patio at Café Brauer (p.42). Another example of the Prairie School, Café Brauer is on the National Register for Historic Places, but sometimes it’s hard to see how beautiful it is when all you’re doing is basking in the sun and enjoying the beautiful views of the park and the skyline. CHICAGO HISTORY MUSEUM A small but fact-filled museum the Chicago History Museum (p.47) provides an excellent overview of the city’s past. You can catch the evolving styles of Michigan Ave. through 26 ensembles curated from the museum’s costume collection in the “Chicago Styled: Fashioning the Magnificent Mile” exhibit before Aug. 16. For artifacts that have seen some of the city’s and country’s historic moments don’t miss “The Secret Lives of Objects” exhibit, which features such objects like the table where Robert E. Lee surrendered. OLD TOWN OIL If you take a look at ingredients you use on a daily basis oil and vinegar are probably at the top, yet we tend to just pick any one off the grocery shelf. Old Town Oil (p.48) gives those ingredients the respect it deserves by offering first cold-pressed olive oil

and spectacularly aged and flavored vinegar from small-batch producers from around the world. MERCY BEAUCOUP! RESALE BOUTIQUE With brands like Tory Burch, Kate Spade, and Burberry, Mercy Beaucoup! Resale Boutique (p.48) isn’t like other thrift stores. In addition to it’s high-end collection, a portion of the proceeds go to Mercy Home for Boys & Girls. So get your glam on and help a good cause at the same time. For the rest of the walking tour make sure to pick up the new Lincoln Park and Old Town maps at your nearest concierge desk starting this June.

SUMMER DATE IDEAS By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago
PACK IT UP When it doubt, pack a blanket and unpack a full spread of picnic favorites before your significant other’s eyes. Picnicking is equally affordable and adorable, and a great way to spend some quality one-on-one time. So find a sunny day and load up on all the summer essentials. Chicago-style hot dogs, anyone? Not sure what to pack? Ask your concierge about their favorite Chicago farmers markets for great, ultra-healthy options that will help you fill that picnic basket to the brim. Each

ä Chicago Botanic Garden
of these markets is ideally located next to one of the city’s most picnic-friendly parks. And the best part? Picnicking in the parks is always free! DINNER AND A SHOW Sometimes it’s alright to stick with a tried and true classic. Taking in a play at the legendary Steppenwolf Theatre Company (p.48), known for producing exciting and challenging work season after season, sets the bar for a very engaging evening, especially if you’re looking for something to talk about over dinner. On the topic of dinner, we’d recommend Boka (p.42) for contemporary American or Sono Wood Fired (p.42), a cozy wood-fired pizzeria. GO GREEN Instead of picking up a bouquet of flowers for your lady or man, why not take him or her to the flowers? The Chicago Botanic Garden (p.48) has over 24 gardens perfect for strolling through with your loved one whether you stop by in spring or summer when the flowers are at their peak, in autumn as the leaves brilliantly change colors, or during the snow covered landscapes of winter it’s a wonderfully creative option for a romantic day out.
39 ä Navy Pier Summer Fireworks
ä Green Mill Cocktail Lounge
LAUGH IT UP As the saying goes, the couple that laughs together, stays together. So why not check out a show at The Second City (p.48)? For over 50 years, this Old Town comedy club has been spewing out the laughs and bringing the funny with their signature sketch comedy shows. The club also has a dinner and show package, which includes preferred seating at the theater and a fixed price dinner at an area restaurant which definitely takes some of the planning pressure off.

KICK IT OLD SCHOOL How about a retro night out with jazz and great cocktails? The Green Mill Cocktail Lounge (p.48), once a hangout of Al Capone, keeps the spirit of the ‘30s and ‘40s alive with its prohibition era décor and nightly performances. Bring your dancing shoes. What better way to impress your lady or man than by twirling them around the dance floor? LIGHT THE SPARK Whether you’re just getting to know each other, or relighting a lost flame, the perfect way to end a date with that special spark is to watch the stunning fireworks display over Navy Pier (p.41). Catch the famous Navy Pier Summer Fireworks (p.48) from practically anywhere overlooking Lake Michigan, and the best part is it’s absolutely free. We’d recommend giving Grant Park or North Avenue Beach a go, or you can wander over to watch Buckingham fountain light up, for an extra special effect. The Navy Pier summer fireworks shoot off on both Wednesday and Saturday nights all summer.
