CHICAGO SUMMER STARTS HERE By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago

â Chicago Blues Festival

We’ve waited at least eight months for a Chicago summer. So take every second possible to soak in the quintessential Chicago warmth. CHICAGO BLUES FESTIVAL We have many great blues clubs to enjoy the sounds of pain and sorrow, but it’s easy to forget that the blues were born outside. So it’s only right to enjoy them in our beautiful Grant Park for the Chicago Blues Festival (p.46). Over half a million people return every year for this free three-day festival that brings the blues’ heavy hitters. Headliners this year include Syl Johnson, the Taj Majal

ä Chicago Blues Festival

Trio, and the beacon of Chicago blues, Buddy Guy. The festival ends with a tribute to the greatest Chicago bluesman, Muddy Waters. ANDERSONVILLE MIDSOMMARFEST Chicago summers are known for street festivals, so take advantage and help celebrate Andersonville Midsommarfest’s (p.46) 50th birthday. With five stages for bands, over 80 local artists and vendors, and an expected 50,000 people, this is the street festival you don’t want to miss. The city’s street festivals also give you a chance to get to know the neighborhoods outside of the Loop, and with activities like free admission to the Swedish American Museum you’ll get a better feel for the background of this character-filled, once predominately Swedish neighborhood. CHICAGO ALE FEST One of Chicago’s many landmarks is Buckingham Fountain. Modeled after the Latona Fountain at the Palace of Versailles, it’s captured in many photographs and even the opening credits of “Married with Children.”

Underground Wonder Bar (p.35) is a gem for music lovers. Offering live music nightly—ranging from jazz and rock to Motown, blues, funk, and reggae—it is the perfect spot to grab a late night cocktail, dance your cares away, or simply take in some of Chicago’s finest musicians. Pop in on Tuesdays for their All-Pro Jam Night. 3 OTHERS TO TRY: • Dylan’s Candy Bar (p.12) • mk The Restaurant (p.27) • Allyu Spa (p.12)

â Ravinia Festival courtesy of Ravinia Festival Enjoy the fountain with another Chicago favorite, craft beers, at the Chicago Ale Fest (p.46). This two-day fest will feature over 200 beers from American craft breweries Lagunitas Brewing, Revolution Brewing, Buckle Down, and more. RAVINIA FESTIVAL For some more summer jams head to Ravinia Festival (p.46), the oldest outdoor music festival in the United States. This venue is perfect to set up a picnic with snacks, a bottle or three of wine—it is BYOB—and enjoy great retro and modern musical acts. No Ravinia Festival concert this summer represents that as well as the Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga concert. Sheryl Crow, Doobie Brothers, Me-

lissa Etheridge, Blondie, Rob Thomas, Aretha Franklin, and others will also be at Ravinia Festival this summer. MILLENNIUM PARK SUMMER FILM SERIES For more picnic ideas don’t skip out on the Millennium Park Summer Film Series (p.46). Nothing beats sitting on the Great Lawn of the Jay Pritzker Pavilion during sunset and watching the entire city light up. Well nothing but doing all that and watching “The Breakfast Club” at the same time on a 40-foot LED screen. The ‘80s classic is just one of the many films that will be playing every Tuesday. Other films include “Back to the Future,” “Almost Famous,” and “Apollo 13.”

ä Rubi's at Maxwell Street

CLASSIC CHICAGO EATS By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago From tried-and-true and historic joints to the casual fare that locals simply can’t get enough of, here’s a look at where to get an authentic taste of Chicago. GOOD GENES Chicago-style hot dogs have become something of a legend—as they should be. So, where can you get the best one in town? While the answer may vary from person to person, neighborhood to neighborhood, we’re partial to Gene & Jude’s (p.28). While not a traditional dog in the Chicago-style sense, this “Depression Dog” comes from a little stand with a big reputation. Topped only with mustard, onions, relish, and sport peppers; revel in the glory as you peel back the French fries that come wrapped alongside, and you’ll soon discover why they’ve been voted numerous times as the “Best Hot Dog in America." Gene & Georgetti (p.27), a familyowned Italian steak house in River North, has been serving up oversized portions of steaks, chops, and Italian specialties since 1941. With its close proximity to the Merchandise Mart, you’re likely to spot business types hobnobbing with the restaurant’s loyal regulars, and you might even see

ä Gene & Georgetti

ä Gene & Jude's

a famous face as numerous celebrities have eaten here—they have the photos to prove it. Their T-bone and a bone-in ribeye top our list, but you really can’t go wrong with Italian favorites like the linguine with red clam sauce or chicken Vesuvio. RUBI’S Chicago’s Maxwell Street Market (M6;F1) is a must-experience icon and also home to what is one of the most delicious tacos in town. Running every Sunday morning and afternoon, food vendors set up kitchens underneath tents along Canal Street, north of Roosevelt Road, and serve up eats that rival any restaurant in town. The cream of the crop is Rubi’s at Maxwell Street (p.18), whose al pastor taco is basically life-changing. Cooked in a charcoal-fired spit with the perfect balance of pineapple, herbs, peppers, and spices served on a homemade tortilla pressed and cooked as the tacos are made and topped with onions, cilantro, lime, and fire-roasted cebollitas and jalapenos, it’s no wonder there’s always a line of hungry customers wanting more. Two varieties of salsa are available on the adjacent

15

â Manny's Cafeteria and Delicatessen fold out tables. We recommend the salsa verde. With almost two dozen offerings, other stand-out menu items include asada, chicharones, and squash blossom. MANNY’S Not able to make it over to Maxwell Street on a Sunday? Venture to the neighborhood anyway, as it is also home to another Chicago gem: Manny’s Cafeteria and Delicatessen (p.18). Locals flock to this cafeteria-style, breakfast-and-lunch staple whose choices run the gamut from matzo ball soup and chopped liver to meatloaf and potato latkes. TWIN ANCHORS You might recognize this Old Town (M7;O3) spot; it was a transformed into O’Reilly’s Italian Restaurant in the romantic comedy “Return to Me,” directed by Chicago-native Bonnie Hunt. Although Twin Anchors Restaurant & Tavern (p.26) has been a favorite with the locals since 1932, numerous celebrities have dined here through the years, including Frank Sinatra who regularly frequented the joint. Slow-cooked baby back ribs—get the zesty sauce—with sides like pepperjack creamed spinach are a must-try, but the menu also offers dishes like roasted chicken and fish and chips.

à Kasey's Tavern

BELLY UP LIKE A LOCAL By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago Here’s a look at some of Chicago’s most historic and beloved drinking institutions. THE BERGHOFF RESTAURANT (P.32) After opening in 1898 as a saloon, which admitted men only and sold Dortmunder-style beer for a nickel a glass, this historic Chicago establishment has undergone 117 memorable years, adapting over time into what is now a full-service restaurant serving German American cuisine. With over a century spent battling the challenges posed by an ever-changing Windy City, The Berghoff Restaurant was one of the few bars tough enough to survive Prohibition—serving soda pop and schnitzel in the place of liquor and ale—before getting back to business in 1933, obtaining Chicago’s very first post-Prohibition liquor license (which is proudly on display in the bar). SCHALLER’S PUMP (P.33) This 134-year old Bridgeport establishment represents classic American traditions: baseball and politics. It is the oldest tavern in Chicago and has served as both a “second office” for

â Schaller's Pump

â The Berghoff Restaurant five of Chicago’s mayors (it’s across the street from the 11th Democratic Ward offices), a haven for White Sox (p.46) fans (it’s also just a few blocks from the ballpark), as well as a speakeasy in the Roaring ‘20s. A South Side staple, Schaller’s is a mustexperience, old-time dive with cold brews, reasonably priced food, and plenty of whiskey to go around. THE COVE LOUNGE (P.32) Pretty much the definition of old fashioned. The tall, single story structure’s sign out front simply reads “Cocktail Lounge." And it’s exactly that. No food is served here—though you may be able to snag a package of peanuts—just drinks. This low-lit, nautical-themed bar is rich in historical features, with a mahogany bar that dates back to the Prohibition era. Up until 1967, jazz piano used to be played in the back room until new ownership took over and cut that out. It’s said that the jazz music inspired University of Chicago dropout Kurt Vonnegut to have written "Player Piano," his first published novel.

KASEY’S TAVERN (P.32) Located on historic Printer’s Row (M6;F2) in the South Loop, Kasey’s Tavern has one of Chicago’s oldest liquor licenses—the second to be exact—and is best defined as your quintessential neighborhood pub. While this 19th century storefront tavern has since been adorned with a handful of flat screen TVs, cushy places to sit, and a lengthy beer list that would please any craft beer enthusiast, it still remains true to its blue collar roots and packs in loyal locals during the day and welcomes newcomers to the neighborhood each night. THE MATCHBOX (P.33) This local gem has been called Chicago’s most intimate bar for good reason—this 460-square-foot nightlife stop is the smallest tavern in the city. Don’t let size fool you; this bar has proven its worth the indisputable way—by maintaining a thriving business for decades. As a well-known fixture on the corner of Ogden, Milwaukee, and Chicago Avenues, this infamous little bar has absorbed a lot of history over the years, and learned how best to please its clientele. So what’s the secret? We’d put our money on the heavenly, hand-shaken cocktails. Bartenders are known for their lively personalities, concoctions, and commitment to excellence in the art of beverage making.

EXPLORE CHICAGO FOR UNDER 1¢ By Amanda Cooper @CP_Chicago Experience Chicago like a local without breaking the bank. Here’s a look at my personal favorite—and free— things to do in the city this summer. So go ahead, splurge on a steak dinner at Gibsons Bar and Steakhouse (p.16) or that purse you have been eyeing on Oak Street. BEACHES One wouldn’t think of Chicago as being a tropical beach destination, but from Memorial Day to Labor Day our beach scene is red hot. Oak Street Beach (M7;B3) is conveniently located at the very North end of the Magnificent Mile. Take a break from shopping and take in the beautiful Lake Michigan views. Just North of Oak Street is North Avenue Beach (M7;A3). North Avenue Beach is Chicago’s most popular beach. There are plenty of activities, such as stand up paddle boarding and sand volleyball courts. My favorite beach is just South of city at 31st Street (M5;C4). This quaint little beach is located between Grant Park (M6;F3) and the Museum of

â Chicago Cultural Center

â North Avenue Beach Science and Industry (p.40). It’s rarely busy and is a great spot to get away from the crowds and enjoy some of that much-needed rest and relaxation. ART GALLERIES Art can be found everywhere in Chicago. From local neighborhood galleries to outdoor public spaces, our art scene is booming. Here are a few of my favorite free places to view art in the city: CHICAGO CULTURAL CENTER (P.41) This historic landmark hosts hundreds of programs year-round, all for free. The building has one of the world’s largest Tiffany stained-glass domes, which you can view on your own accord or attend one of the free guided building tours that take place every Wednesday through Saturday at 1:15 p.m. The galleries spaces are constantly changing. Some past favorite art exhibits include local artist Hebru Brantley and photographs by Vivian Maier.

THE ORIENTAL INSTITUTE (P.40) The Oriental Institute was founded in the early 1900s as a research laboratory for the investigation of the early human’s progress from ancient days in the Middle East. A majority of The Oriental Institute’s collection came from expeditions in the Middle East during the 1920s – '40s. These artifacts came from digs in Egypt, Israel, Syria, Turkey, Iraq, and Iran. Notable works in the collection include various treasures from Persepolis, the old Persian capital, and a monumental statue of King Tut. MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY (P.40) Founded by Columbia College Chicago in 1979, the Museum of Contemporary Photography is one of the only museums in the region devoted exclusively to photography. The museum aims to communicate the value of still images, artistic expression, and human thought. GALERIE F (P.38) Galerie F considers itself as an opendoor gallery space and does not require appointments to view the art pieces for sale. Galerie F special-

izes in limited edition gig posters, art prints, and street art. It’s common for Galerie F to have the same street art you would see locally on buildings that are available as a print for your home. It’s free to look, but street art enthusiasts will enjoy their very reasonable starting prices for beginning art collectors.
