QUINTESSENTIAL CHICAGO

CONCIERGE-RECOMMENDED SUMMER FESTIVALS By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago

When summer hits in Chicago any time spent indoors is wasted. With these concierge-recommended festivals, you’ll realize no city does summer better. FORGET ABOUT YOUR DIET

During any season Chicago is a food and drink mecca, so only imagine the deliciousness available to you at all the city’s festivals. For Douglas Pickett, concierge at the InterContinental Chicago, nothing more needs to be said after the words Ribfest Chicago (p.50). With over 30 Chicagoland eateries serving savory treats and 15 of them competing for the title of Best Ribs, you better bring those stretchy pants for a day of non-stop eating. Keep those pants around for Chicago Blues Festival î

the Dog Dayz of Summer (p.48) when the legendary Doug Sohn will be serving his much-missed gourmet hot dogs and duck-fat fries with some of Goose Island’s specialty brews. SUMMER TUNES

Dance off some of that food when the best musicians around the world perform at some of the most anticipated music festivals this summer. Of course, if you’re still hungry you can follow the advice of Jan Viscum, concierge at the Hyatt Chicago Magnificent Mile and have a picnic “before seeing the biggest performers in the country” at Ravinia (p.50). With it being the oldest outdoor music festival in the United States, Ravinia attracts a large variety of artists that this year includes Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, Paul Simon, Patti LaBelle, Bob Dylan, Mavis Staples, Buddy Guy, and Jeff Beck. For a more contemporary sound don’t miss Lollapalooza (p.48) with headliners Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Future, Ellie Goulding, Major Lazer, and more. For the quintessential Chicago sound head to the Chicago Blues Festival (p.47). Over half a million people return every year for Lollapalooza ï

Dog Dayz of Summer í

this free, three-day festival that this year features Shemekia Copeland, Lil' Ed and The Blues Imperials, and Fred Wesley and The New JB's. CULTURAL MUSTS

Big music festivals are great to see artists from around the world, but don’t ignore Chicago’s great street festivals and cultural attractions. Richard Augusta, concierge at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel, finds Andersonville’s Midsommarfest (p.48) to be a perfect combination of neighborhood flair, family, pets, and “crazy people.” With and expected 50,000 attendees over the two days and three nights and local restaurants, vendors, and music acts to experience, Midsommarfest is the best way to explore Andersonville. This summer will also be huge for Navy Pier (p.46) as it celebrates its 100th birthday. Not only is there a new Ferris Wheel, new dining experiences, and tons of renovations, but it is also welcoming America’s Cup (p.47), the first time the legendary sailing race will be held on fresh water. America's Cup ï

My all-time favorite place in the city is The Art Institute of Chicago (p.42). Simply put, it is awesome. This local gem was also recently named the #1 Museum in the World by TripAdvisor. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

DD Chicago Line Cruises (p.56) DD Navy Pier (p.46) DD Millennium Park Summer Music Series (p.48)

Etienne Padin, Concierge, Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel

Acanto (p.15) is a great place to unwind for lunch after exploring The Art Institute of Chicago, or Millennium Park, or for dinner before a show. Not to miss small plates include the bruschetta topped with truffled ricotta and prosciutto and the spicy sausage with peperonata, ricotta, and calabrian chili. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

DD Paladar Restaurant & Rum Bar (p.15) DD Lady Gregory’s Irish Bar & Restaurant (p.14) DD Little Bad Wolf (p.14)

Bob Klees, Concierge, InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile

Tagged as one of the best new restaurants in River North, Imperial Lamian (p.17) serves up imaginative modern Chinese fare. They are developing a great reputation for their hand-pulled noodles and incredible soup dumplings. The décor is quite clever, using huge abaci to divide the booths and a great open kitchen. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

DD Sparrow (p.38) DD City Winery Chicago Riverwalk (p.36) DD Smack Shack (p.19)

PICTURE PERFECT PATIOS

River Roast ï

By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago

There’s no shortage of alfresco dining options around town. To help you narrow down the choices we turned to those who know Chicago best: the concierge. Here’s a look at five of their favorite spots to eat outdoors. RIVER ROAST

When it comes to waterfront seating, concierge Paige Herrera of Corporate Concierge Services says you can’t do much better than the riverside terrace at River North restaurant River Roast (p.18). James Beard award-winning chef Tony Mantuano and executive chef John Hogan’s menu is comprised of contemporary American tavern fare featuring such standout items as their Big Fish Roast served with Mediterranean chips and their soul-warming Golden Goblets of perfectly-seasoned fried chicken with honey. Best described as an ideal gathering place to kick back with friends, the iconic views found here of the city’s architecture—on the banks of the Chicago River, no less— simply can’t be beat. LA CREPERIE

If you’re craving an authentic French crêpe, nothing beats La Crêperie (p.14). Described as a quiet, tree-

filled oasis in the hectic Lakeview neighborhood by concierge Douglas Pickett of the InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile, this Chicago institution has been around since the early ‘70s and their backyard patio is truly a gem. The crêpes here range from simple (a plain buttered crepe) to savory and sweet and everything between. Paired with a lovely rosé and a summer breeze? You’re sure to fall in love with this local favorite, sans doute. ATHENA

Skip to a Greek Island on Athena’s (p.19) umbrella-shaded patio, which concierge Jan Viscum of the Hyatt Chicago Magnificent Mile calls one of the most beautiful in the city. Decorated with fountains, flowers, and columns derived from the architecture of ancient Athens, this Greektown favorite offers the ideal setting to enjoy old-world fare like loukaniko, dolmades, and lamb with artichokes complemented by amazing skyline views. THE DAWSON

A lush escape from the busy six corners intersection of Grand, Milwaukee and Halsted is The Dawson (p.19). No matter if you’re looking to enjoy a frozen mai tai in front of River Roast ï

the wood-burning fireplace on their spacious patio or share a canteen drink with friends at one of the communal tables, this sprawling establishment offers up one of the best outdoor dining options in the city. Tip: Go on a Monday night and delve into their endless (yes, we mean all-youcan-eat) mussels and frites for just twenty bucks.

L a Crêperie í

90 MILES CUBAN CAFE

If you’re looking for a casual meal and to experience Chicago like a local, corporate concierge Akilah Perry suggests 90 Miles Cuban Cafe (p.15), a BYO neighborhood gem. This hot spot has two spacious patios to choose from, each boasting a colorful and lively atmosphere that’s as enchanting as the fare. You’d be remiss not to try their Cuban sandwich or ropa vieja, and make sure to bring a bottle of rum or wine to take advantage of their excellent mojito and sangria mixes.

NIGHTLIFE

SUMMER BAR CRAWLS By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago

From soaring urban rooftops to cozy backyard patios, here’s a handful of concierges’ favorite places to imbibe during the summer months. DO DOWNTOWN

Laura Trylong, a corporate concierge with AXA Assistance USA, recommends spending an afternoon and evening imbibing downtown. She suggests starting with a glass of Champagne at Raised (p.38), the Renaissance Chicago’s new third floor indoor-outdoor rooftop lounge before heading down to the Chicago Riverwalk (M6;C-D) and enjoying a frosty libation at waterside venues like Island Party Hut (p.46) and City Winery (p.36). Afterward, she would cross the bridge at Clark Street and head down to river level to catch a baseball game and local brew on one of the big screens at Bridge House Tavern’s (p.36) riverside patio before rounding out the evening with a nightcap on Smith & Wollensky’s (p.38) flower-lined deck.

Fountainhead ì

shops, so it is a prime location for people watching as well. Just a bit south of Gene’s you’ll find Fountainhead (p.36) and one of the best neighborhood rooftops around. Although it can get crowded, rooftop seating here never feels cramped. Fountainhead has a stellar craft beer and whiskey selection, both of which are perfect for sipping the afternoon away. LOGAN SQUARE

Chicagoans and visitors alike can’t get enough of Parson’s Chicken & Fish (p.38), whose sprawling patio is best compared to a backyard BBQ. Laid back and casual, grab a spot at

LINCOLN SQUARE

You know what pairs well with rooftops? Specialty meats. Gene’s Sausage Shop & Delicatessen (p.36), whose fantastic rooftop beer garden is essentially summer on a roof, is an ideal spot to relax and soak up some sun while enjoying a few sausages and pints. The view overlooks the main drag and an adorable block of

one of the communal picnic tables and do yourself a favor by ordering one of their negroni slushies. Paired with some buttermilk fried chicken and crunchy cool sides? You’ve got a can’t-beat summer experience. Just down Armitage Avenue from Parson’s you’ll find Best Intentions (p.36), a neo-dive bar with an unexpected tropical hideout of a back patio. Here you’ll find a cabana bar, decorated with family heirlooms, offering select bottled and canned beer, wine, and an elevated cocktail program.

Smith & Wollensky í

ROOTOP HOP

Concierges’ can’t get enough of Chicago’s rooftop lounges—and for good reason. With numerous options now dotting the landscape, they recommend soaking in those Instagram-worthy views at such hot spots as LondonHouse Chicago’s new and only tri-level rooftop venue LH (p.38); the Terrace at Trump (p.38), nestled in the shadows of iconic edifices like the Wrigley Building and Louis Sullivan’s Jewelers Building; and The J. Parker (p.36), offering incredible views of Lincoln Park Zoo and the famous curve of Lake Shore Drive.

ICONIC SUMMER ITINERARIES By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago

With the increase in daylight hours it’s important to do as much as possible during a beautiful Chicago day. The city’s concierge have you covered with these iconic summer itineraries. RICHARD AUGUSTA, CONCIERGE, THE RITZ-CARLTON HOTEL

For Richard Augusta breakfast is important when you have a long day ahead of you, so make sure to try Chicago staple Lou Mitchell’s (p.19). Work off the meal by renting a bike from Bike And Roll (p.56) at Navy Pier (p.46) and riding the lakefront to Montrose Harbor and back. You’ll likely be hungry again so head to the Park Hyatt Chicago to NoMi Kitchen (p.14) where you can enjoy a contemporary American meal with stunning views of Lake Michigan and Water Tower Place. Your legs might still be tired, so take a break and still take in the sights on The Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise Aboard Chicago’s First Lady Cruises (p.56) for an architectural river cruise. After you’ve retreated to your hotel for some rest, enjoy dinner at

Chicago History Museum í

some of Augusta’s favorites like the Michelin-starred BOKA (p.14), the innovative and mouthwatering Intro (p.15), or deliciously Italian Siena Tavern (p.18). Cap off a successful travel day with a drink from Cindy’s (p.36) rooftop bar for incredible views of Millennium Park. Bike and Roll î

on their patio and get a great view of Lake Michigan and experience the excitement on the pier. Finish your day with a brew from the Miller Lite Beer Garden and catch the Aon Summer Fireworks show. CAITLIN MEETER, CONCIERGE, HOTEL ALLEGRO

MIKE STEINKELLNER, CONCIERGE

If you’re looking for a midweek escape Mike Steinkellner has the summer itinerary for you. On a Wednesday, start with an early trip to the Museum of Science and Industry (p.42). Get there as early as possible because with a U-505 submarine, coal mine, baby chick hatchery, Boeing 727, 40-foot tornado, and more you can easily spend a weekend at the museum. Steinkellner recommends taking a break at the Omnimax Theater. Catch the latest film “National Parks Adventure” to get a one-of-a-kind look at the country’s greatest treasures. Head back up north and grab a bite at Harry Caray’s Tavern (p.18) at Navy Pier where you can grab a bite

The Second City í

If you’re looking to focus on one neighborhood Caitlin Meeter has a great summer itinerary. Start your exploration of Lincoln Park and Old Town with breakfast at Kanela (p.15) and enjoy a s’mores waffle, a crab cake benedict, or any of their other delectable dishes. Head to the Chicago History Museum (p.42) and experience the powerful “Lincoln’s Undying Words” exhibit that explores the former president’s changing views toward slavery. Get back outdoors at the Lincoln Park Zoo (p.56), and make sure to check out the new baby camel. If you’re ready for more food, Meeter recommends Bricks Chicago (p.14). Don’t sleep on Chicago’s thin crust pizza just because we’re the birthplace of deep dish. When you have a slice of Bricks’ creative, whole-wheat crusted pizza while sipping on a delicious brew from their extensive beer list you’ll realize Chicago does all kinds of pizza perfectly. Walk off the pizza looking for the “Wizard of Oz”themed statues at Oz Park (p.46), and then end your night with a show at The Second City (p.54) and a night cap at Old Town Pub (p.38).
