QUINTESSENTIAL CHICAGO

START YOUR SUMMER WITH THESE 13 CHICAGO FESTIVALS By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago

Mamby on the Beach ì

FILL THE BELLY

You know that summer beach body you’ve been working on? Prepare to kiss it goodbye with these food and drink festivals. Find your favorite grilled meats at Ribfest Chicago (p.51), Windy City Ribfest (p.51), and Windy City Smokeout (p.51). At Taste of Chicago (p.51) not only can you sample all of Chicago’s iconic foods at Grant Park, but you can enjoy music from stars like Alessia Cara, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, and Passion Pit. Wash down all the food with what Chicago does best: craft beer. The Chicago Ale Fest (p.50) celebrates American craft beer with over 100 craft breweries pouring samples at Grant Park. The Chicago Craft Beer Fest (p.50) in Lincoln Park is where you go to sample the best local brews. SUMMER SOUNDS

Lollapalooza may be in August, but there are some equally impressive and iconic music festivals taking place in June and July. Start off with a celebration of Chicago’s most iconic sound at the Chicago Blues Festival (p.50) at Millennium Park.

Windy City Smokeout ì Credit: Jeff Marini

Enjoy headliners like Gary Clark Jr., William Bell, and Nellie Tiger Travis at the world’s largest free blues festival. After you’ve conquered the blues, take on country at Country LakeShake (p.50) at the Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island. The three-day festival includes country music stars Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town, Rascal Flatts, and many more. Pitchfork Music Festival ï Credit: Garrett Duncan

Head to one of the few music festivals that takes place south of downtown Chicago at Mamby on the Beach (p.50). Bands like MGMT, Local Natives, and MisterWives are sure to provide some typical summer tunes. Make sure you don’t miss the Pitchfork Music Festival (p.51), Chicago’s most anticipated music festival after Lollapalooza. This year Pitchfork not only includes indie favorite Solange but older groups like A Tribe Called Quest, PJ Harvey, and LCD Soundsystem. CULTURE CLUB

Chicago is a beautiful melting pot as seen by these cultural festivals. Held during National Pride Month, Chicago Pride Fest (p.50) is a celebration of Boystown with great food, drinks, and performers including Taylor Dayne and Thelma Houston. Celebrate Puerto Rican culture at Humboldt Park during Fiestas Puertorriqueñas (p.50) with your favorite Puerto Rican food, drinks, and music. Celebrate Independence Day at Freedom Fest (p.50) at Navy Pier. Guarantee yourself a fantastic view of Navy Pier’s fireworks from Navy Pier’s 27,000-square-foot rooftop where you’ll not only have a spectacular view but delicious barbecue food and music from a live DJ. Chicago Craft Beer Fest î

If you have an opportunity to venture to Ukrainian Village, check out Whisk (p.36). Part brunch, part burgers, and all delicious. Chef/owners (and brothers) Rick and David Rodriguez have joined their passions to create one of the city's best brunch and burger joints. If you're feeling adventurous, order the Snickers-stuffed french toast. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

DD Cindy's (p.40) DD Rosa's Lounge (p.42) DD The Dawson (p.36)

Diane Martinez Concierge, Palmer House Hilton

Music is everywhere in Chicago. Whether you are looking to enjoy a jazz combo playing in the background at spots like Tortoise Club (p.35) or jamming out to some blues at Rosa’s Lounge (p.42) on Armitage, our city is sure to bring listening pleasure to your ears. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

DD Reggies' Rock Club (p.43) DD Thalia Hall (p.43) DD Lyric Opera of Chicago (p.52)

Sara Myers Chef Concierge, The Gwen

90 Miles Cuban Cafe (p.17) is one of Chicago's hottest BYOB restaurants and has even been featured on the the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives”. Some of my favorite dishes are the chorizo and goat cheese empanada and the lechon entrée of slow-roasted shredded pork, citrus mojo, house seasonings, and grilled onions. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

DD The Crab Pad (p.17) DD Black Bull (p.36) DD San Soo Gab San (p.16)

DINING

SUMMER EATS By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago GREAT Q

Nothing says summer quite like great barbecue. For Hyatt Center concierge Brianna Connell, her go-to joint is Smoke Daddy (p.36) in Wicker Park. This neighborhood favorite serves up live jazz and blues music alongside the standard barbecue fare like brisket, pulled pork, ribs, and chicken, in addition to stellar sides ranging from sweet potato fries and collard greens to smoked pit beans and mac n’ cheese. If you’re looking for a down-home country hangout right in the center of the city, Shannon Boland, chef concierge at LondonHouse Chicago, recommends Bub City (p.40). Grab a table by the open garage door windows or on their front patio and promptly order their Giddy Up fries, which are waffle fries smothered with cheddar cheese and barbecued pork. You’ll thank us later. TACOS & MARGS

Another winning summer combination is tacos, booze, and a large patio space to enjoy them on. If this is more your speed, Ritz Carlton Federales ïî

Bub City ìî

Chicago concierge John Dillon suggests posting up at Federales (p.40). A lofty taco-and-tequila establishment in the West Loop, the menu here features barbacoa-style tacos stuffed with flavorful meats like shredded beef brisket and pork belly al pastor in addition to ceviches and other shareable fare. The booze puts the spotlight on margaritas—which come in flavors like classic, mezcal, strawberry, hibiscus, and even a boozy horchata variation—in addition to a lineup of Mexican beers including Tecate served with a hot sauce-spiced rim.

15

SUSHI, MAKI & SAKE

For Ramon Gomez, concierge at the W Chicago Lakeshore, it’s all about Sushi Dokku’s (p.36) carefully selected shortlist of sushi, sashimi, and Japanese small plates. This attractive, minimalist space in the West Loop is also home to a wellcurated sake list and Booze Box, the supremely cool, subterranean speakeasy-style izakaya in the basement.

Sushi Dokku ìî

ON THE WATERFRONT

If you’re looking to get your tan on while doing some al fresco dining and drinking on the lakefront, concierge Alfredo Caliva recommends checking out The Dock at Montrose (p.36), a sprawling, 3,000-squarefoot beach bar offering up burgers, tacos, salads, and live music.

NIGHTLIFE

IMBIBE OUTSIDE By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago

Fountainhead ì

Chicago has no shortage of options for those looking to quaff a great cocktail outside. Here’s a look at six concierge-approved rooftop lounges and bars. LIBATIONS IN THE LOOP

LondonHouse Chicago’s outdoor terrace, LH Rooftop (p.40), is a summer bucket list topper, offering picturesque angles of the city that you really can’t find anywhere else. Ramon Gomez, concierge at the W Chicago Lakeshore, recommends starting your evening here for a cocktail and to snap some instagramworthy photos of the stunning vistas of Chicago’s world renowned architecture and the Chicago River. Sure, the panoramic view alone of Millennium Park, The Art Institute of Chicago, Lake Michigan, and the electricity of South Michigan Avenue makes Cindy’s (p.40)—The Chicago Athletic Association Hotel’s rooftop restaurant and open-air terrace—a great spot to gather with with friends. But when you factor in craft cocktails from an alum of The Violet Hour and seasonal, mouth-watering food, then you’ll soon see why this is is one of the Loop’s most sought-after hot spots. For less of a see-and-be seen scene, but equally lovely scenery, head over to The Tree House (p.42), Tavern at the Park's rooftop hangout. Described The Tree House î

Gene's Sausage Shop & í Delicatessen

as “the ideal rooftop for dining and cocktailing to ease into your evening” by Joyce Fong, chef concierge at the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel, this third-floor patio boasts ample seating to graze on appetizers and sip on craft cocktails while you take in the bird’s eye view of Millennium Park. SIP IN STREETERVILLE

One of corporate concierge Cassie Cook’s favorite hidden gems is the 100-seat, couch-and-table-filled terrace at GreenRiver (p.40). Nestled above Streeterville on the 18th floor of a Northwestern Medical Center build-

ing, this luxe spot combines breathtaking views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline with the culinary and cocktailian prowess of restaurant king Danny Meyer (Union Square Events) and the Best Bar in the World Team (of New York’s The Dead Rabbit fame). The cocktail menu here is arranged by key ingredient (i.e. juniper, rye, agave, etc.) and within each are masterfully-crafted cocktail selections named for a person or event in Chicago’s history.

LH Rooftop ìî

BELLY UP, UP NORTH

You know what pairs well with rooftops? Specialty sausages. If you’re looking for a low key night out, look no further than Gene’s Sausage Shop & Delicatessen (p.40) in Lincoln Square. A favorite of John Dillon, concierge

GreenRiver íî

at the Ritz-Carlton, the rooftop beer garden here feels like your own back deck and is essentially summer on a roof. So head north, soak up some sun, and enjoy a few sausages and pints. Venture just a bit south on Lincoln Avenue and cozy up at what Reside Living concierge Beth LaBrosse describes as “one of the best rooftops around” at Fountainhead (p.40). This local gem has a stellar craft beer and whiskey selection, both of which are perfect for sipping the afternoon—or evening—away.

THE CONCIERGEAPPROVED SUMMER, FAMILY FRIENDLY ITINERARY By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago

The kids are out of school and the weather is nice. It’s time to soak up all the sun and have all the fun possible. After polling the concierge community we’ve put together a summer itinerary that will not only be easy on your wallet but will cover some of Chicago’s most iconic attractions.

Maggie Daley Park î

BREAKFAST

You’re going to do a lot of walking today and possibly some running and jumping, so make sure you load up on breakfast to get you and your kids through all the fun. Concierge Favorite Yolk (p.35) not only has your breakfast staples but great original dishes like their Santa Fe frittata, which has the right amount of heat to wake you up and is the right size to fill you up. For a sweeter breakfast try the Nutella crepes because you deserve it. Kids will enjoy the Big Kid breakfast, but good luck keeping them away from the s’mores pancakes. There are six locations across Chicago, but you might want to check out their newest location in Marina City as it is closest to your next stop. MILLENNIUM PARK

Joyce Fong, chef concierge at the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel, recommends starting out at Millennium Park (p.49) and getting a fun, family photo at Cloud Gate or—as we call it—The Bean. If it’s a particularly Millennium Park î

Credit: City of Chicago

warm day make sure you’re all wearing some clothes you don’t mind getting wet and run around the incredibly fun Crown Fountain. After you’ve explored some of the park, head over Frank Gehry’s BP Pedestrian Bridge to Maggie Daley Park (p.49) recommended by Shannon Boland, chef concierge at the LondonHouse. On the surface this seems like an oasis for children, but after a few moments no park will make you wish you were a kid more than this one. Where do you start? The skating ribbon, rock climbing wall, mini golf, play garden, or the tennis courts—it doesn’t matter where you start but you surely won’t want it to end.

LINCOLN PARK ZOO

You can catch a cab, but why not get some exercise and rent a bicycle from Bike and Roll (p.54) and ride up the Lakefront Trail to Lincoln Park. If you’re hungry after your ride maybe scarf down a Chicago-style hot dog or a gourmet dog from Chicago’s Dog House (p.16). Then follow Hyatt Regency concierge Omar Morales’ recommendation and head to Lincoln Park Zoo (p.55). What started as a gift of two swans and then the purchase of a bear cub for $10 has turned into one of the few free-admission zoos in the country that is open every day of the year. The Lincoln Park Zoo houses 1,100 animals in its 49 acres including lions, polar bears, gorillas, giraffes, camels, zebras, and much more. NAVY PIER

Grab your bike and head down the Lakefront Trail to Navy Pier (p.49) where you can return your bike. Brianna Connell, concierge at the Hyatt Center, finds Navy Pier as a great place to end your day. Take a load off and enjoy a view like no other from the Centennial Wheel as it brings you as high as 200 feet above the ground. If the kids still want to run around take them to the Chicago Children’s Maggie Daley Park î

Lincoln Park Zoo ìî Credit: Yinghai

Museum, or if you want to take in some beautiful art don’t miss the Driehaus Gallery of Stained Glass. When your stomach starts to call again hit up one of the many great eateries at Navy Pier like Giordano’s (p.16), where you can treat yourself and your kids to Chicago stuffed deep-dish pizza. If you’re visiting on a Wednesday or Saturday end your day with the spectacular Aon Summer Fireworks right from Navy Pier.
