publisher/editor's note

Take it Outside For this issue, we combed the city to offer up a whole slew of essential adventures so you can enjoy every sun-filled minute during your time here in Chicago. From alfresco cocktailing (p.38) and summer eats (p.20) to the quintessential festivals (p.8) you simply won’t want to miss, this guide offers up some of the best ways to explore Chicago during these glorious, warm weather months. Whether you’re looking to peruse the works of Belgian surrealist René Magritte at the Art Institute of Chicago’s (p.51) new exhibit, experience a twilight performance at the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park (M6;D3), or be among the first to experience the much-anticipated “David Bowie Is” exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (p.52)—making its U.S. debut on Sept. 23—late summer in Chicago simply buzzes with energy and excitement. With so many delightful Chicago adventures to choose from, there’s no shortage of ways to keep the fun meter running all summer long. So what are you waiting for? Go out and explore! Sincerely,

ä Chicago Air & Water Show

FIVE FESTIVE FINDS By Alexis DeBrunner MUSIC AND MUSCLE CARS #TBT If Lollapalooza isn’t your scene, and you’re the type who lives for instagramming a #tbt on Thursdays, then don’t miss out on Retro on Roscoe (p.60), happening Aug. 10 – 11. In its 19th year, this music festival brings a blast from the past with live Chicago bands playing oldies and throwbacks on three stages across six blocks in Roscoe Village. Expect bands like as 16 Candles with all the ‘80s hits, Too White Crew for that old-school hip-hop, or the country classics from Suburban Cowboy. Roscoe’s top restaurants provide summer bites; and while the festival may not be on a Thursday, don’t let that stop you from posting retro pics of the 50 classic vehicles from the Antique Classic Car and Motorcycle show. CLEAR FOR TAKE OFF As the summer comes to a close, the 56th Annual Chicago Air and Water Show (p.60) will be wrapping it up in style on Aug. 16 – 17. Grab a spot along the water on North Avenue Beach (M6;A3) to watch one of the largest

free shows in the U.S., with air performances featuring the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Army Parachute Team Golden Knights. Work on your tan and take part in a great Chicago

Celebrate Millennium Park’s (p.58) 10th anniversary by enjoying a free Monday night concert (through Aug. 11) or their complimentary “Millennium Park Presents” series (through Sept. 6) at the Pritzker Pavilion. Stop into Pastoral (p.19) on your way for an extensive selection of artisan cheeses, breads, and wines for a perfect picnic in the park. 3 OTHERS TO TRY: • Fig & Olive (p.23) • Jonathan Adler (p.18) • "Magritte: The Mystery of the Ordinary, 1926–1938” at the Art Institute of Chicago (p.51)

tradition, while soaking up the last of those summer rays. OUR BIG FAT GREEK FESTIVAL If good food and cultural immersion is more your speed on a hot August day, then head down to Halsted and Van Buren Streets on Aug. 23 – 24 for the 25th Annual Taste of Greektown (p.60). With 11 participating Greek restaurants, this festival blends oldworld traditions with a modern twist beside live music from Greek bands and games for kids and families. Entertainment and gyros for all, opa! GOT HOT MOVES? While summer winds down, so will Chicago SummerDance (p.60), which will host its last event Sept. 13 – 14. This three-month dance festival has given Chicagoans live music and dance lessons on its 4,900-squarefoot dance floor in the Spirit of Music garden at Grant Park (M6;F3) for the last 18 years. At its last event of the year, show off your Flamenco skills to the sound of El Payo y La Tiranta, and make the heat of summer last just a little longer. VIVA MÉXICO! Keeping with the classics, another festival celebrating another year is the Festival de la Villita (p.60) on Sept. 12 – 14. Going for its 25th round, this cultural event celebrates Mexico’s independence from Spanish rule with food, music, and carnival rides in Chicago’s Little Village (M6;G1) neighborhood. On Sunday, it’s the stopping point for one of the largest celebrations of Hispanic culture in the U.S., the 26th Street Parade (p.60). So take some time to enjoy celebrating the rich history of the culture behind that delicious Mexican food we all love so much.

Eddie V’s Prime Seafood (p.27) is a new, bright addition to Chicago’s growing seafood scene. Their crab cake, made with two types of lump crab and a delicate, yet crunchy, panko crust is the best I’ve eaten and the steamed sea bass is light and delectable. Leave room for the bananas Foster. With its top-notch service and live jazz performances, it’s a true “go-to” spot. 3 OTHERS TO TRY: • Chef’s Burger Bistro (p.27) • Davenport’s Piano Bar and Cabaret (p.41) • First Fridays at the Museum of Contemporary Art (p.52)

GORDON BECKHAM’S CHICAGO By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago With professional basketball, football, hockey, soccer, and two baseball teams you can spend every day of the year catching many of the country’s greatest athletes right here in Chicago. Chiefly among them? The Chicago White Sox’s (p.60) Gordon Beckham. When the second baseman isn’t laying it all out on the infield at U.S. Cellular Field (p.58) or putting in extra time working out at the East Bank Club (M6;C1), you’ll likely spot him at one of his favorite local haunts around town. Like any athlete Beckham has to eat, and he knows how to eat well. You’ll likely find him enjoying shaki shaki tuna at Hub 51 (p.34), rock shrimp at Sunda New Asian (p.34), or indulging himself with the mouthwatering Giddy Up fries at Bub City (p.28). Not being exclusive-type restaurants Beckham is always running into fans and loves talking baseball, signing autographs,

ä Giddy Up Fries at Bub City

â Bub City and taking with pictures with them. Outside of these River North (M6;C1) staples, Beckham likes to spend time in the Streeterville (M6;B3) and Lincoln Park (M7:L1) neighborhoods. When he’s winding down with friends and family Beckham loves to enjoy some laughs at the great shows at The Second City (p.46) or one of the all-star comedians that pass through the UP Comedy Club (p.46). If it’s the same day the Sox won a game, Beckham will leave The Second City and head to the warehouse-style bar Municipal Bar + Dining Co. (p.43) for the upscale sports bar ambiance, great food, drinks, and DJ spinning some of the best music to celebrate.

ä Honey Butter Fried Chicken

SCRUMPTIOUS SUMMER SPREAD By Gianna Bamonti Here’s 14 incredible edibles to enjoy during the dog days of summer. Nothing says “summer” quite like ice cream and, fortunately, Chicago is chockablock with great frozen yogurt, gelato, and ice cream shops. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams (p.24) offers an eclectic selection of flavors including my favorites: goat cheese with red cherries ice cream and cantaloupe and sun tea sorbet. Black Dog Gelato (p.23) has some of the most authentic gelato this side of Rome! The whiskey bacon gelato bar combines three of my favorite things in one delectable little package. When you think of ice cream, Ireland doesn’t usually immediately come to mind but it certainly will after you visit Cone Gourmet Ice Cream (p.35). Once you try their European-style soft serve, you may just dance a jig. If you want to get “sauced,” and enjoy some of the best barbecued ribs you’ll ever have, Twin Anchors (p.28) is the place. If it was good enough to be Frank Sinatra’s favorite place in Chicago, that’s good enough for me. Make sure to try the new Prohibition sauce! Smoke Daddy (p.23) offers some great ‘cue and live music. Milt’s Barbecue for the Perplexed (p.25) is

â Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams a kosher barbecue spot in Lakeview that is not only delicious, but charitable. Milt’s donates 100 percent of its profits to the Jeffrey F. Kahan Memorial Fund, a donor advised fund at the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago. Summertime means baseball, which to me means hot dogs. Whether you’re at Wrigley Field (M7;J1) or U.S. Cellular Field (p.58), you can certainly get a great Chicago dog. Near the stadium, check out Chicago’s Dog House (p.25) for a Snoop Dog hot dog with homemade chili, colby cheese, and onion. Franks ‘N’ Dawgs (p.25) offers higher-end hot dogs (think Slagel Farms pork loin, lamb barese sausage, and citrus shrimp sausage) on buttery buns. The poutine, fried cheese curds, and truffle fries certainly do not play second fiddle to the main attraction

àä Black Dog Gelato

21

â Pastoral here. I would be remiss if I spoke of hot dogs and didn’t mention Hot Doug’s (p.24). Chicago’s “encased meat emporium” is closing its doors in October, so make sure to go now! While there’s always a line, the duck fat fries are well worth the wait (available only on Fridays and Saturdays). Want to pack a picnic and head to the lakefront or Millennium Park (M6;D3) for a concert at Jay Pritzker Pavilion (M6;D3) or Grant Park’s Petrillo Bandshell (M6;D3)? Visit Pastoral (p.19) for an excellent selection of cheeses, breads, and wines. Plum Market (p.19) houses a veritable cornucopia of culinary goodness to feast upon. Gather some goodies from Pierrot Gourmet (p.27) at the Peninsula Hotel, whose European flair will have you feeling as though you’re dining en plein air at a beautiful Parisian park. One more thing your picnic basket needs? Fried chicken. I’ve got four words for you: Honey Butter Fried Chicken (p.24). This drool-worthy spot

â Twin Anchors ä Hot Doug's

has a lot of hoopla, and deservedly so. You won’t want to share the pimento mac’n cheese or the dump cake cobbler of the day. Table Fifty-Two (p.23) offers a more elegant ambiance, but down-home delicious buttermilk fried chicken. The fried green tomatoes, grits, and hummingbird cake bring some Southern flair to Chicago.

ALFRESCO DRINKING SPOTS By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago

Chicago’s lovely weather is officially here, so don’t delay and get yourself to one of these gardens, patios, and rooftops for a tipple before it’s too late. A 300-seat patio with 14 unique craft beers across 360 taps in the shadows of some of Chicago’s most treasured architectural gems? Yes, it exists. Located adjacent to the Tribune Tower on the Magnificent Mile (M9), Howells & Hood (p.27) is the perfect spot to people watch, linger, and soak up the summer sun. A Peruvian paradise nestled among the brick buildings of River North, Tanta’s (p.34) indoor-outdoor rooftop offers ample seating and two bars, one of which is devoted to pisco and another one that specializes in ceviche. While you’re taking in the cavernous views, sip on one of their signature drinks like the pisco sour (obviously) or the La Rusa (acholado pisco, St. Germain, orange, lemon, Campari ice, and fresh thyme). As for rooftop dishes, Tanta’s ceviche dishes

take center stage, which are fresh and light takes on this Peruvian staple featuring the day’s freshest catch tossed with lime, aji (Peru’s yellow chili) and an ever-changing number of seasonable ingredients. PRISTINE PATIOS A lush escape from the busy six corner intersection of Grand, Milwaukee and Halsted is The Dawson’s (p.41) 150-seat patio. Whether you’re looking to enjoy a frozen mai tai in front

â RM Champagne Salon of the wood-burning, stone fireplace or share a canteen drink with friends at one of the communal tables, this sprawling establishment offers up one of the best outdoor bar scenes in the city. While patios abound along Randolph Street in Chicago’s hot West Loop (M2) neighborhood, we encourage you to venture down that unmarked, candlelit alleyway to discover the splendor that is RM Champagne Salon’s (p.44) Provençal patio. Whether you’re opting for the Champagne of Beers in all of its 40-ounce glory or actual bubbles, this cobblestoned beauty is a perfect getaway from the bustle of the city. BACKYARD ENVY Ada Street’s (p.23) backyard area, like the restaurant itself, is a true gem. This walled-in hideaway boasts everything from bright green,

environmentally-friendly turf and charming lights strung overhead to a wood-burning fire pit and even a pingpong table. Make sure to try one of their hand-bottled, batch cocktails (we’re partial to the Corner Store, a delicious concoction of Lunazul tequila, Campari, grapefruit, and lime). Another laid-back, hip hangout is the rear patio at Sportman’s Club (p.45). The lodge-like space, inspired by a French hunting museum, buzzes during the colder months when locals flock there to cozy up in one of the booths (complete with chess and checker boards built into the tables) for a spirit-forward cocktail or glass of on-tap amaro. The rear patio, though, is a stunner, and you’d be amiss not to belly up to one of the tables and treat yourself to a refreshing cocktail, can of beer, or just embrace the season and pop a bottle of rosé .

Enjoy the Ritz-Carlton Chicago’s new roof top bar the Dec (p.41) then stroll down to Fig & Olive (p.23), a brand new restaurant located in the beautiful Gold Coast neighborhood, before ending the night with cocktails and burlesque entertainment at Untitled (p.45). CHICAGO’S OUTDOOR ADVENTURES By Jonathan Han Don’t let all the concrete and big buildings fool you. Chicago is a great city to spend outdoors with nature, and it would be criminal not to take advantage of this beautiful weather before winter hits again. ON THE RIVER With locations stretching from North Avenue to the Magnificent Mile to Chinatown the Chicago Water Taxi (M3) is an excellent way to get a great view of the city and explore off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods. Operated by Wendella Boats (p.64), catch the taxi at the Magnificent Mile dock and get off at the peaceful Ping Tom Memorial Park (M6;G1) in Chinatown (M6;H2). Take a stroll down Wentworth Avenue and try some delicious dim sum, get authentic Asian ingredients at the small markets, see the zodiac statues at Chinatown Square, and grab some souvenirs that you can’t get in any other part of the city. KAYAKING Want to engage yourself in something a little more hands-on? Head

ä Wateriders

â Chicago Water Taxi ä Ping Tom Memorial Park

over to Wateriders (p.64) and grab a paddle. With different kayaking tours and several different types of kayaks Wateriders surely has a tour that matches your interests and skill level. Their classic Chicago Kayak Tour takes kayakers through a twoand-a-half-hour tour on the Chicago River while learning about the iconic architecture. If you want your kayaking adventure to end with a bang then take the Navy Pier Fireworks Tour where at twilight you’ll be able to catch the Pier’s renowned fireworks light up the skyscrapers on Lake Michigan. For gangster lovers Wateriders offers

a Shady Chicago tour where you’ll paddle over the supposed haunted site on the river and learn about Chicago’s criminal past. Of course, if you just want to workout with a beautiful background the company also offers Kayouts where you can challenge yourself to see how far you can make it down the river or just take a leisurely pace while enjoying the views. ON THE ROAD AGAIN Not a fan of water? Try Absolutely Chicago Segway Tours (p.62). Explore the beautiful landscape of the Museum Campus with their Chicago Lakefront/ Museum Campus Tour. You can also see Chicago come to life with their Chicago City Lights tour. Head out of downtown and take their Lincoln Park/Gold Coast tour which explores the unique Oak Street, Ohio Street, and North Avenue Beaches along with the opulent mansions of mansions of the Gold Coast. The key aspect of the Segway tour is it being much more personable and convenient than a bus or boat tour. Controlling your own vehicle will also give you the opportunity to capture the best possible photos along the way. NATURE IN THE SUBURBS The Chicago Botanic Garden (p.56), and its 26 gardens and four natural areas on 385 acres, will enchant visitors with its splendor. Some highlights include the English Walled Garden with its beautiful flowers and greenery and the Rose Terrace overlooking the Krasberg Rose Garden where the

Budding gardeners and future scientists can get hands-on experience in the Grunsfeld Children's Growing Garden as they water, weed, and harvest plants. With over 40 years of cultivating and maintaining so much beautiful plant life the Chicago Botanic Garden is a must-see for any Chicago visitor.

â Chicago Botanic Garden photos Looking for some theatre that’s off the beaten path? Look no further than Oracle Theatre (p.61), coming fresh off a season in which they won five Joseph Jefferson Awards (including Best Production and Best Ensemble for “The Mother”). They'll be running the world premiere of their adaptation of Upton Sinclair's “The Jungle” (through Sept. 6), an hour-long show featuring original music from their awardwinning composer Nicholas Tonozzi.
