WHAT TO EXPLORE OUTDOORS
â Chicago Air and Water Show credit: City of Chicago
By Forrest Bode MUSIC IS IN THE AIR Headlined by the world-famous Lollapalooza (p.44), the lineup of marquee artists making the trip to Chicago is a who’s who of heavyweights in the music industry. If you can’t score tickets to Lollapalooza, don’t worry because the city has you covered
âRiot Fest
with other noteworthy music fests like the North Coast Music Festival (p.44) and Riot Fest (p.45). If festivals aren’t necessarily your thing, Billy Joel (p.44), Madonna (p.44), AC-DC (p.44), and Ed Sheeran (p.44) are all making appearances in the greater Windy City area in August and September. LIFE’S A BEACH It’s not Cancun, but with more than 20 beaches, the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan attract visitors by the thousands each summer. If you’re interested in the more spectacular attractions the beaches have to offer, the Chicago Air and Water Show (p.44) will not disappoint. Grab a spot on the popular North Avenue Beach (M6;A3) amongst more than two million other spectators and prepare to be dazzled by both civilian and military pilots. For those looking for a more laid back visit to the beach, Montrose Beach’s Dock at Montrose (p.30) and Hollywood Beach’s Nacho Mama’s (p.31) both offer delightful, beachside food and drink.

HOT SPOTS
Tim Samples,
Chef Concierge, The James Chicago
The Dawson (p.18) is one of my favorites and boasts a sleek 19th century design including two levels and a gigantic outdoor terrace with fireplaces. They have an excellent variety of craft food and cocktails and are open for brunch on weekends. You must try the BBQ Pork Cupcakes and the Wood-Grilled Sausages.

3 OTHERS TO TRY: • Absolutely Chicago Segway Tours (p.48) • Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio (p.36) • Art Institute of Chicago (p.36)
MILLENNIUM PARK: MORE THAN JUST THE BEAN While Millennium Park’s most iconic attraction might be the legumeinspired work of art, there is so much more waiting to be experienced here. Grab a spot on the Great Lawn and enjoy the massive projector screen at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion for the Millennium Park Film Series (p.45), a truly unique cinematic experience. Another great outdoor activity on the Great Lawn is the free Millennium Park Summer Workouts (p.45), which are held weekly and offer tai chi, yoga, pilates, and Zumba®. For those wanting a taste of local musicians, good luck choosing between Millennium Park Presents (p.44), Made in Chicago’s World Class Jazz (p.44), Jazz Fest (p.44), and the World Music Festival (p.45)—or just go to all of them. RECLAIM THE RIVERWALK Newly opened in June, the Chicago Riverwalk (p.41) between State and LaSalle Streets has been completely redone as a part of Mayor Emanuel’s project to add more life to this part
7
âRiot Fest of the city and turn it into a new recreational frontier. A kind of urban oasis, the new riverwalk features dining, live entertainment, river cruises, and beautiful outdoor spaces to relax in and take in beautiful late summer days. With running paths as well as kayak and boat rentals, the riverwalk makes it easy to stay active while enjoying the great outdoors.

Chicago’s Lakefront Trail (M5;B-D4) is one of the most beautiful sights! Whether you are walking or riding a bike, attractions along the path include everything from the Museum of Science and Industry and The Museum Campus to Navy Pier and Belmont Harbor. It is always about 10 degrees cooler by the lake, which is ideal for beating the summer heat. 3 OTHERS TO TRY: • Tortoise Club (p.26) • Wrigley Field (p.48) • Chicago Air and Water Show (p.44)
Gretchen Nitz,
Concierge, Hotel Burnham
In the summer, one place I enjoy going is the Jay Pritzker Pavilion (M6;D3) in Millennium Park. Every Saturday they host morning workouts, and I love nothing more than doing pilates with the skyline behind me. They also have plenty of movies in the park where you can bring your own wine and relax with friends. 3 OTHERS TO TRY: • Spacca Napoli (p.18) • Remington’s (p.20) • Uncommon Ground (p.18)

AMAZING ALFRESCO SPOTS By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago From rooftops and terraces to sidewalk seating and beer gardens, here’s a look at some of the top outdoor dining spots in town. MOODY’S PUB (P.18) Located in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood, this old-time local favorite is known for their simple and delicious burgers and massive fenced-in beer garden with plenty of trees offering cool respite from the heat. The two-tiered space has scores of tables and benches, many of which can be easily moved together to accommodate groups of friends or families. TANTA (P.20) While you’re taking in the cavernous views of River North from the indoor-outdoor rooftop, sip on one of their signature drinks like the pisco sour—obviously—or one of their kegged cocktails. We’re partial to the La Guapa with CH lavender gin, rhubarb, and Crémant de Bourgogne. As for rooftop dishes, Tanta’s cebiche take center stage, which are fresh and light
takes on this Peruvian staple featuring the day’s freshest catch tossed with lime, aji (Peru’s yellow chili), and an ever-changing number of seasonable ingredients. FOUND (P.26) This popular suburban gem offers super seasonal, rustic new American dishes in a creative atmosphere inspired by 1920s Bohemian Paris and icons of the Beat Generation. Grab a seat on their 25-seat sidewalk patio and enjoy beautifully prepared, nonfussy fare like their lamb meatballs with pistachio chimichurri and mint yogurt sauce while taking in the sights and sounds of bustling downtown Evanston. FIG & OLIVE (P.18) This chic Mediterranean restaurant is a welcome addition to the Gold Coast’s culinary landscape and features a variety of spaces to cozy up and nosh. Their open-air garden terrace is a stunner, and the ideal spot to enjoy tasting dishes and shareable small plates such as the

zucchini carpaccio and the fig gorgonzola tartlet alongside an assortment of crostini, crudo, imported charcuterie, and more. PERENNIAL VIRANT (P.18) Located across from stunning Lincoln Park (M7;O3), this spot’s 70seat patio is a go-to summer staple for area residents and visitors alike. Celebrated chef/partner Paul Virant’s farmhouse–chic menu boasts the best of the season and Midwest and the environment simply can’t be beat. Make sure to try their weekend brunch on a Saturday and then venture across the street to experience the Green City Market, which runs from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. AL’S #1 ITALIAN BEEF (P.18) Looking for something low key and easy on the pocketbook? For an authentic Chicago experience, head to Al’s #1 Italian Beef in Little Italy (M6;G1) and grab a beef to enjoy outside. Be sure to order it dipped.

We also prefer ours with sweet and hot peppers. You’ll receive a pile of lovely, tender Italian meats dunked in a rich broth. After, head across the street and grab some Italian ice at Mario’s Italian Lemonade, another Chicago summer favorite.

SWEAT TO THE MUSIC By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago We haven’t had much of a summer so far, so you have to find other ways to heat things up. In Chicago, there’s no better way than dancing all night long. SALSA SATURDAYS To feel some real calentura don’t miss out on Nacional 27’s (p.31) Latin dance party, Vida 27. This Latin restaurant turns into a club every Saturday at 11 p.m. with a DJ playing a mix of salsa, merengue, bachata, and more. Those who don’t know your Latin steps need not worry as they do throw in some contemporary American tunes. However, if you want to learn some salsa moves, don’t miss out on the dance lessons every Wednesday. The cover for Vida 27 tends to be around $10, but you can bypass it by having dinner at the restaurant before the gozadera, where you can enjoy some delicious ceviche, empanadas, churrascos, and more. MARTINIS AND MANICURES Too many times, DJs get complacent playing the same top 40 hits making each club indiscernible. Beauty Bar
ä Beauty Bar
âä Nacional 27
(p.30) solves that problem with their countless theme nights. Whether it’s their Do the Right Thing night, filled with old school hip-hop; their Another ‘90s Party night, where you're encouraged to get in your best grunge gear; or, my favorite, The Prince and Michael Experience, where they play the best from the King of Pop and The Purple One, Beauty Bar knows how to
ä Beauty Bar
set a party vibe. The cover is usually around $5. If you get there early take advantage of their martini and manicure station. ICH BIN EIN BERLINER Many of the best dance clubs in the city are the LGBT clubs in Boystown and Lakeview. Berlin (p.32) is the staple that is more than just an LGBT bar, but just an outright sweaty, beatfilled experience where you’ll find all kinds of people enjoying either their Madonna or Robyn theme nights or their spectacular drag shows. Even Rolling Stone has rated it as one of the best dance clubs. Make sure you take cash as they don’t take credit cards, and make sure you enter with an open mind for a dance experience like no other.

HIP-HOP ON HUBBARD Hubbard Street is always a party no matter the day of the week. With so many bachelor and bachelorette parties, birthday parties, and reunions going on, sometimes it’s impossible to get into any place without waiting in a long line. One place that usually doesn’t have a line but always has a great dance party going on, sometimes better than other places on Hubbard Street, is Theory (p.32). An upscale sports bar by day, Theory turns into a dance club at night bumping some of the best hip-hop and R&B from old school classics like “Scenario” from Tribe Called Quest to “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa. They also know the best time to drop “Real Love” by Mary J. Blige, which is really any time.
