QUINTESSENTIAL CHICAGO AVP Pro Beach Volleyball ï Championships Credit: Mpu Dinani

EIGHT SUN-SOAKING EVENTS By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago BE ACTIVE

Sharpen your dancing skills with Chicago SummerDance (p.50) at Grant Park. Dance instructors of different genres help you learn new moves, and live bands play music to show off what you’ve learned. Learn swing, ballroom, salsa, tango, square, and more all on the 4,900-square-foot, open-air dance floor, which should give you enough space to shimmy. If you want to sweat some more head to Millennium Park Summer Workouts (p.50) every Wednesday and Saturday on the Great Lawn. Wednesdays are only yoga classes held from 7:30 a.m.–8:15 a.m. There is more variety on Saturdays with a different workout every hour starting at 7 a.m. until 11 a.m. with tai chi, yoga, pilates, and Zumba® in that order. While it might be early, you’ll forget the time once you realize how beautiful it is to get healthy with a view to all the Loop skyscrapers, the Pritzker Pavilion, and the rest of Downtown Chicago. Take a break from all the workouts and watch others battle it out at the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour Championships (p.54) at Oak Street Beach. While you wouldn’t expect the cold, windy city to be a strong hub for beach volleyball, AVP Pro Chicago SummerDance î Credit: City of Chicago

í Chicago Hot Dog Fest Beach Volleyball has made stops in Chicago every year since 1983. While you watch the competitive teams enjoy the festival with music, food, and more. WALK THE STREET

It’s hard to get to know all of Chicago when it’s below zero degrees in the winter, so don’t miss your last chance to taste, hear, and see all our neighborhoods have to offer in these festivals. In Lincoln Park don’t miss the celebration of all encased meats at the Chicago Hot Dog Fest (p.50). Head to the Near South Side and

witness the revival of the Motor Row District with hops and grapes at the Motor Row Craft Beer and Wine Festival (p.53). At Festival de la Villita (p.54) not only will you celebrate Mexico’s independence from Spain, but all the great things the Hispanic community provides Chicago with: live music, carnival rides, and mouthwatering food. In the bustling and culturally rich neighborhood known as Boystown, Northalsted Market Days (p.54) brings more than 150,000 visitors every year. See world-renowned musical artists, enjoy food, drinks, local vendors, and a great celebration of Chicago’s LGBT community. AIR AND WATER SHOW

As the summer comes to a close, the 58th Annual Chicago Air and Water Show (p.53) will be wrapping it up in style. Grab a spot along the water on North Avenue Beach to watch one of the largest free shows in the U.S. with air performances featuring the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the U.S. Army Parachute Team Golden Knights. Work on your tan and take part in a great Chicago tradition, while soaking up the last of those summer rays.

My favorite new spot in River North is Arbella (p.38). This cocktail lounge has a great atmosphere and their cocktails utilize ingredients from all over the world so there’s something for every taste. My favorite drink is the Sierra Madre made with Pasilla Mezcal, Antica Formula, chocolate bitters, and dried ancho chillies as it takes me back home to Oaxaca. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

DD Raised (p.39) DD Vertigo Sky Lounge (p.40) DD Lakeview Taco Fest (p.54)

Rhoda Kucuk, Concierge, Westin Michigan Avenue

Enjoy the latest from the greatest at Rick Bayless’s Leña Brava (p.34). This hip West Loop spot boasts an extensive list of mezcal cocktails, well-executed ceviche and tablas, and the not-tobe-missed Leña “Banana” Split. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

DD Left Coast Food + Juice (p.16) DD The Bristol (p.35) DD Flo (p.34)

Joan Hohs, Resident Concierge, MILA Chicago

Absolutely Chicago Segway Tours (p.56) is my favorite way to see the city. They have a variety of tours which makes coming back a must. If you have trouble deciding which to take first, I would start with the Lakefront Tour. You’ll be surprised how much fun you are having while learning about Chicago’s architecture, parks, and statues. Their guides are extremely knowledgeable, fun, and always put safety as a priority. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

7 HOT TABLES IN TOWN By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago BUZZ-WORTHY RESTAURANTS

Here’s a look at 5 of concierges’ favorite new eateries John Dillon, concierge at the RitzCarlton, can’t get enough of Imperial Lamian’s (p.18) noodles, dim sum, and wok-fired dishes. The first U.S. outpost of an Indonesian-based chain, this chic Chinese newcomer boasts striking, Asian-inspired decor featuring stylized abacus grates, roomy booths, and an open kitchen. While there, you simply must try their addictive namesake noodles that are hand-pulled and one of their artisanal, tea-infused cocktails. Dillon also recommends Roister (p.34), the more casual but still cutting-edge New American hot spot from the team responsible for threeMichelin-starred and James Beard Award-winning Alinea. The menu here is served in three formats: à la carte in the dining room, family-style chef's tasting at the kitchen counter; or the fully-immersive chef's tasting in the basement prep kitchen. No matter which experience you choose, the atmosphere is as lively, energetic, and creative as the dishes.

Anteprima ì

Beacon Tavern ìï

Describing it as “top shelf” across the board, Langham Chicago concierge Philippe Gills says Beacon Tavern (p.18)—a sea-meets-land eatery from celebrated restaurateur Billy Lawless—is a welcome addition to the city’s culinary landscape. The menu here is loaded with fresh interpretations of tavern classics and seafood-forward dishes and libations, which play heavily on classic American cocktails with a twist. Experience simplicity at its best

at Aloha Poke Co. (p.20), says Gertruda Popinara, concierge at the Hotel Allegro. Located in the Chicago French Market—and with a new location in Lakeview—this is the spot that started the invasion of poke concepts in Chicago. Serving up traditional Hawaiian-style salads and rice bowls topped with chunks of seasoned raw fish, this newcomer does not disappoint. AceBounce Chicago (p.16), the first of several planned U.S. venues of the British ping-pong import, is already a go-to social entertainment venue and its restaurant, 1901, is not to be overlooked says Gulcin GucludalTasyurek of the Silversmith Hotel. Food at this modern, 44-seat restaurant is serious business. Helmed by award-winning chef Rick Gresh, the carefully curated menu takes classic American, Mediterranean, and Asian recipes and transforms them with locally-sourced ingredients resulting in elevated, delightful dishes. 2 MORE TO EXPLORE

If you're looking to venture beyond downtown here’s two neighborhood gems ideal for alfresco eats Occupying a corner tavern in the Bridgeport neighborhood that predates Prohibition, The Duck Inn (p.20) is a retro-inspired place serving up creative duck dishes and other American eats alongside inven-

tive cocktails. Helmed by Michelinstarred chef Kevin Hickey, a Bridgeport native, this local haunt—which has grown into a true destination restaurant—boasts a patio out back that makes you feel like you’re literally dining in someone’s backyard (in the best possible way). What’s not to love about Andersonville’s Anteprima (p.16)? Rick Verkler, concierge at the Guesthouse Hotel, recommends this trattoria for its cute, bustling atmosphere and seasonal, rustic Italian fare. Make sure to snag a seat on their secluded back patio and take time before or after dinner to explore the charming stretch along Clark Street where it’s located. Roister ï

NIGHTLIFE

5 SKY-HIGH LOUNGES By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago

Drinks with a breeze and a view? Yes, please. From tried-and-true spots to stunning new additions to the scene, here’s a look at five of concierges’ top spots to sip a cocktail, nosh, and indulge in outside views and warmth.

LH Rooftop ìî

SIP IN STREETERVILLE

Unassumingly located on the 18th floor of the Northwestern Memorial Hospital office complex in Streeterville, Judson Corrie, concierge at the Waldorf Astoria, says you’ll rejoice in discovering GreenRiver (p.38) and its sprawling outdoor terrace. Here you’ll find an expansive wrap-around balcony that's perfect for after-work relaxation, offering sweeping and distinctive views of the urban skyline and Lake Michigan. GreenRiver also boasts one of the top cocktail lists in the entire city—courtesy of the celebrated cocktail duo Sean Muldoon and Jack McGarry of New York’s The Dead Rabbit fame. The lengthy list of libations is broken down by the main distillate in the base spirit, including tasting notes and even “personality type."

Concierge can’t get enough of Streeterville Social (p.40), the sun-drenched terrace perched atop the third floor of the Loews Chicago Hotel. This sprawling, warm weather retreat features stunning vistas and two lounge areas in addition to a grassy lawn area set for games like giant Jenga, croquet, and pétanque. The elevated street food and drink menus pair perfectly with the fun and games—making it the perfect space to soak up the summer sun. The hand-crafted cocktail menu features custom creations like the Streeterville Mai Tai and old school GreenRiver ï

tiki remixes like the Coconut Batida. Those drawn to a rosier hue can check out the Pink Page, an entire wine selection solely devoted—and rightfully so—to rosé. TRIED-AND-TRUE

If you’re looking for ample seating in addition to good value for creative food and drinks, Suzanne Spring, a concierge at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers, recommends going to ZED451 (p.40). Beautifully situated on a quiet corner in River North, this local favorite can always be relied on for an all-around solid Chicago rooftop experience. If you’re here on a weekday, make sure to take advantage of their Happy Hour specials available Monday through Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. featuring deals ranging from $4.51 margaritas and manhattans to half off bottles of wine. For a laid back afternoon in the sun, corporate concierge Tamika Smith suggests you venture to the South Loop’s beloved rock venue/ restaurant/record store (yes, really) and cozy up on their third-floor deck. Dubbed Reggies Trainwreck Rooftop Deck (p.39), this place has it all: a full bar featuring a great beer selection, full menu, a basketball hoop, a pool table, nine flat-screens, and a pull string shower for those steamy summer days. If you need a break from catching rays on the deck, enjoy

live music on the downstairs corner stage. THE NEWCOMER

For a view of the Chicago River that is literally impossible to find anywhere else, Philippe Gills, concierge at the Langham Chicago, suggests heading to LH Rooftop (p.39). The crown jewel atop the LondonHouse Chicago hotel, snagging a table or couch seat here does require reservations via Tock but you can always opt for a walk-up seat at the bar. With stunning vistas from pretty much every vantage point, make sure to look west at sunset for absolutely show-stopping, no-filter-required views.

CONCIERGE-RECOMMENDED NEIGHBORHOODS By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago

With the release of our 2016–2017 Chicago Neighborhood Maps, we’re sure you’re eager to explore the city. Here are some of the concierges’ favorite neighborhoods.

Black Dog Gelato ìï

WICKER PARK

You might consider Eric Loughlin, concierge at theWit Hotel, a bit biased being that he lives in Wicker Park, but his insight is invaluable in exploring this character-filled neighborhood. Food is definitely a highlight for Wicker Park. When the Buffalo native considers Lillie’s Q (p.35) to have the best wings in Chicago you know it’s a must-try barbecue spot. Loughlin even shares a literal hidden lounge with his favorite craftcocktail bar Bordel (p.38), which is tucked above Black Bull. For sweets don’t miss Stan’s Donuts and Coffee (p.35) where Loughlin recommends the banana nutella pocket. For shopping, grab designer shoes at City Soles (p.10), consignment threads at Buffalo Exchange (p.10), and quality denim at Mildblend Supply Co. (p.10). If you want to work off some of the eating and shopping head a couple of blocks north of North Avenue and bike or walk The 606 (p.48) trail, which stretches 2.7 miles across other Chicago neighborhoods.

The 606 ï

way to get there is to bike down the Lakefront Trail and start your exploring at Promontory Point (p.49), the peninsula designed by Prairie School landscape architect Alfred Caldwell, where you’ll get a unique view of the city. Head into Hyde Park and get some of the freshest streetwear at Sir and Madame (p.10), owned and operated by Hyde Park natives Brian and Autumn Merritt, where they offer a classic style with a twist. After all that biking and shopping grab some authentic Jamaican food at Ja’ Grill (p.16) where you can get some flavorful jerk chicken, curry goat, and red snapper while sipping on a tropical cocktail. UKRAINIAN VILLAGE

It may be a small section in West Town but Ukrainian Village does pack a lot in. For Kimberly Turner, assistant general manager at Hosteling International, it starts with the food. At Roots Pizza (p.34) the focus is all about handmade food starting with the dark-roasted malt used for their crusts to the sausages made in the kitchen. If it’s hot out don’t skip out on Black Dog Gelato (p.34) where chef Jessica Oloroso offers unique flavors like blueberry french toast, blood orange sorbet, Mexican hot chocolate, and whiskey bacon. If you’re looking

Stan's Donuts îï and Coffee

for unique souvenirs head to Paperish Mess (p.12) where they sell works from over 100 independent artists. There is something for everyone here whether it be tie bars with maps of the city, beautiful prints of tableaus, or just a cute poster of two foxes playing a guitar and autoharp. For some more culture, don’t miss the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (p.44). What started as a place to highlight the many contemporary Ukrainian artists in the 1970s has become an alternative modern art museum that has added works from artists from the U.S., Lithuania, and Poland. Although it houses an extensive permanent collection and rotating exhibits, what sets it apart are the films, musical performances, gallery talks, and literary events. Lillie's Q îï
