HONORING CHICAGO'S HEROES

â Graffiti Zone

We are very proud that Concierge Preferred is the official magazine sponsor of Horses of Honor (p.64): a public art tribute to our city’s brave heroes. Now through end of November, Chicago will be adorned with colorful, life-sized replicas of the police department’s mounted horses that have been designed, painted, decorated, and/or dressed by noted artists, architects, and fashion and interior designers. The talented young artists at Graffiti Zone designed our horse, which is on display along the Magnificent Mile (M9). A non-profit organization founded in 2006, Graffiti Zone serves as a community arts center for the children and teens of the underserved West Humboldt Park neighborhood. Built to encourage self-awareness and connection through art making and promotion, Graffiti Zone provides young artists a safe environment after school for self-expression. It’s a peaceful haven where they can learn basic drawing, lettering, and color theory in addition to constructing canvases to be sold in area coffee shops, curating gallery shows, and even a bit about music, creative writing, and dance. Half a dozen artists contributed to the design of our horse, and we were fortunate enough to visit the center to see them in action. From selecting the impactful color palette to sketching out the unique designs that adorn the horse, we couldn’t be more proud to play a part in having their work publicly displayed for all to enjoy. After the exhibition, the horses will be auctioned off to raise money for the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, which gives money to the families of fallen officers, supplies college funds for their children, and helps pay for rehabilitation and other necessary care for officers who survive injuries in the line of duty. We encourage you to join us in paying tribute to our city’s heroes by venturing out and taking in these remarkable pieces of art first-hand. Sincerely,

Jim Gilligan Publisher & Vice President

5 SPIRITED, CAN'T MISS EVENTS By Amber Holst / @CP_Chicago On October 4th, tens of thousands of people will line the banks of the Chicago River to take part in a largerthan-life, whimsical, and pyrotechnic spectacle like no other at the Great Chicago Fire Festival (p.56). Redmoon (p.58), Chicago’s 24-year old theater company known for “Spectacle Art,” is the driving force behind this new—and totally free—urban ritual celebrating the city’s grit, greatness, and renewal following the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Explore 150 cool spaces and places over 48 hours as part of the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s (p.63) Open House Chicago (p.56), taking place Oct. 18–19. This public festival offers behind-the-scenes access to Chicago’s repurposed mansions, hidden rooms, sacred spaces, private clubs, iconic theatres, offices, hotels, and more—all for free. So gather your friends, plan your itinerary, and get out there and explore. The Driehaus Museum’s (p.50)

â Great Chicago Fire Festival popular Murder Mystery returns Oct. 24–25 with a new format and a new tale. Set in 1915, “Feud in Ragtime” is filled with countless twists and turns, and features a cocktail reception, a seated four-course meal, and augmented guest participation—you could be the murderer! This year’s event is a lighthearted, bawdy romp into the bloody feud between two prominent Chicago families. You could solve the crime or get away with murder—either way, be careful—you might just die laughing! Need a little push to get into the holiday spirit early? The BMO Harris

Embeya (p.36) is currently my favorite restaurant in the city. Great service is complemented by bright, flavorful progressive Asian cuisine alongside amazing drinks and wines. Right next door is CH Distillery (p.42), where they actually make vodka, gin, and whiskey in house. It’s a great local combo.

áä BMO Harris Bank Magnificent Mile Lights Festival

Bank Magnificent Mile Lights Festival (p.55) on Nov. 22 will all but throw you into it. Come early to enjoy a full day of family-friendly festivities along Lights Festival Lane before snagging your spot to watch the lighting procession. Led by Grand Marshals Mickey and Minnie Mouse, take in the sights and sounds of the floats and march-

ing bands as more than one million lights on 200 trees along The Magnificent Mile (M9) will be illuminated. The parade culminates with a spectacular fireworks display along the Chicago River. State Street is going to be crowded the morning of Nov. 27, and not with the usual shoppers. Join the 400,000 on-street viewers from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. as they watch giant helium balloons of Cheer Care Bear, Tom and Jerry the Mouse, and Madeline float down the street in the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade (p.56). Balloons, floats, marching bands, horses, and all thanks to our great city—this is a fall event you simply cannot miss.

CHICAGO’S TOP 0.1 PERCENT RESTAURANTS By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago You can take this as hyperbole, but there is a restaurant or bar on every block in Chicago. How many exactly? In 2014, Chicago found itself with 20,039 restaurants in its borders. We’ve highlighted some of the top restaurants that will make your 10,000 taste buds dance. JAMES BEARD AWARDWINNING CHEFS: 9 The James Beard Awards are the Oscars of cuisine, and they recently announced for the first time they will host next year’s ceremony in Chicago. It’s fitting as there are nine amazing chefs in this city that have earned the coveted award. The newest recipient is Jimmy Bannos, Jr. who won the Rising Star Chef of the Year Award for his work at

âäá Frontera Grill

â Mercat a la Planxa ä The Purple Pig

The Purple Pig (p.26). A swine lovers dream, The Purple Pig is a tapas-style Mediterranean eatery that will push your boundaries with some of their dishes, and at the end of your meal you’ll thank them for it—more pig’s ear with fried egg, please. The perfect dish combination is the mussels with pancetta, crème fraîche, and marjoram paired with the roasted bone marrow where you spread the marrow, which is better than any butter,

on a piece of toast, dip it in the sauce of the mussels, and just hold on tight. MICHELIN-STARRED RESTAURANTS: 19 How good is the Chicago dining scene? Michelin, the creator of the world-renowned 114-year old travel guide, decided Chicago should have its own dining guide making it one of the only three guides it offers in the U.S. Sixteen of the city’s restaurants have one Michelin star, two have two stars, and the iconic Alinea (p.24) has three stars. A star doesn’t equal exclusivity though. Rick Bayless has proved with his restaurants that delectable food exists at all price points. The contemporary Topolobampo (p.34) has a star, but all three of his Mexican restaurants carry the same quality of dishes. At Topolobampo you’ll find higher-end Mexican dishes divided into eight categories: vibrant, fresh, ancient, bold, enchanting, soulful, complex, and luxurious. There is nothing more bold than their wood-grilled venison loin with pasilla sauce. For a

more authentic dish head next door to Frontera Grill (p.28) and enjoy the trio of chicken taquitos, corn masa quesadillas, and ceviche tostadas. Need a quick bite? Go to Bayless’s Xoco (p.34) where you should indulge in the homemade guacamole and a mouthwatering torta. RESTAURANTS BY IRON CHEFS: 4 If you’re fan of “Iron Chef” you’re in luck because four of them have restaurants in the city like Mario Batali’s Eataly (p.28), Masaharu Morimoto’s Japonais by Morimoto (p.34), or Wolfgang Puck’s Puck Cafe (p.36). Jose Garces is bringing Catalonia to Chicago with his tapas restaurant Mercat a la Planxa (p.35). You haven’t had butifarra, Catalan sausage, like this on a flatbread with mushrooms, garlic, and manchego cheese. It’s not Spanish without manchego. Share small plates of decadent baconwrapped dates, juicy spanish octopus, delicious rabbit and foie gras rillette, and drink it down with a sangria flight.

â Xoco

It is difficult for a gem to remain hidden in the bustling River North neighborhood, but the stylish and uniquely Midwestern seafood restaurant, Kinmont (p.34), still feels like a secret amongst fans of their rough fish and affordable craft cocktails. 5 CELEBRATED THEATERS By Sheila Garg @sgargoes The American Theater Wing’s Tony Award is the highest honor in theater in this country. Each year, one theater is awarded the prize for Best Regional Theater in America. Five theaters in Chicago have earned this accolade, including Steppenwolf Theatre Company (1985), the Goodman Theatre (1992), Victory Gardens Theater (2001), Chicago Shakespeare Theater (2008), and Lookingglass Theatre (2011). 32 ENSEMBLE MEMBERS Steppenwolf (p.58) is famous for its talented ensemble of 44 artists, including actors, directors, and writers. Among its ensemble are such well-known names as Joan Allen, John Mahoney, John Malkovich, William Peterson, and Gary Sinise. Thirty-two of Steppenwolf’s ensemble members have acted or had their work produced on Broadway; many of them are also recognizable from major film and television projects. CELEBRATING 90 YEARS The Goodman Theatre (p.58) is Chicago’s oldest and largest nonprofit theater. It opened in 1925 and will

â Victory Gardens have its 90th birthday next year. In its history, the Goodman has produced a whopping 1,492 productions! As the holidays approach, it’s almost time for “A Christmas Carol.” The Goodman has told the classic story 37 times with eight Scrooges, 32 Tiny Tim’s, and almost 23,000 “Bah, humbugs!” 171 WORLD PREMIERES Victory Gardens (p.63) is committed to developing and producing new works. Since it was founded in 1974, Victory Gardens has produced 171 world premieres. It will produce two more this season. The theater has an intensive program that partners with playwrights for seven-year

residencies. There are currently four members in the ensemble, as well as 14 alums of the lengthy program. 35 OF 37 The Chicago Shakespeare Theater (p.58) performed 35 of Shakespeare’s 37 plays (all except for “Titus Andronicus” and “Coriolanus”). It has explored some of the major plays multiple times; this season will be its third telling of “King Lear.” In addition to Chicago Shakespeare’s own productions, its World Stage program brings some of the best theater from across the planet to Chicago every year. Over the course of 14 years, it has brought 700 artists from 19 countries on five continents to its two stages. 5 SINCE 2005 Lookingglass Theatre (p.58) is well known for its highly-physical approach to performing new works and adaptations of literature. Many of its 24 member ensemble have backgrounds in circus arts. “Lookingglass Alice,” based on Alice in Wonderland, is an

excellent example of the company’s signature style. Originally devised in 2005, it will be brought back for the fifth time this fall. 10 CAN’T-MISS PRODUCTIONS: G Steppenwolf Theatre “The Night Alive” by Conor McPherson (through Nov. 16) G Goodman Theatre “World of Extreme Happiness” by Frances Ya-Chu (through Oct. 12) “Smokefall” by Noah Haidle (through Oct. 26) G Chicago Shakespeare Theater “King Lear” by William Shakespeare (through Nov. 9) “Ionesco Suite” by Eugene Ionesco - by Paris' Theatre de la Ville (Oct. 15-19) “A Q Brother's Christmas Carol” (starts Nov. 19) G Victory Gardens Theater “Rest” by Samuel D.
